Abstract:Subsurface chlorophyll maxima (SCM) layers are becoming more important to the Arctic shelf ecosystem as phytoplankton growing season and ice-free water increase. We measured size-fractionated pigments and environmental variables on the western Arctic shelf during the open-water season in 2014, to study the spatial pattern and mechanisms of the phytoplankton community at the SCM. The SCM layers accumulated approximately 50% of the chlorophylla(Chla) standing stock in the water column, and the contribution increased to >70% for high-biomass areas, suggesting the biological importance of the summer SCM in the shelf ecosystem. The spatial difference in phytoplankton biomass was caused mainly by bioavailable nitrogen concentrations, and the spatial difference in diatom size may be the result of differences in predominant species. High biomass and large diatoms dominated in the SCM layers, making the south and north of the Chukchi shelf a biological hotspot for the ecosystem's food chain and benthos of the western Arctic shelf in summer.
Response of Phytoplankton Community to Different Water Types in the Western Arctic Ocean Surface Water Based on Pigment Analysis in Summer 2008

Abstract:Nutrients and photosynthesis pigments were investigated in the western Arctic Ocean during the 3rd Chinese Arctic Research Expedition Cruise in summer 2008.The study area was divided into five provinces using the Kmeans clustering method based on the physical and chemical characteristics of the sea water,and to discuss the distribution of the phytoplankton community structure in these provinces.CHEMTAX software was performed using HPLC pigments to estimate the contributions of eight algal classes to the total chlorophyll a（TChl a）.The results showed that on the Chukchi Shelf,the Pacific Ocean inflow mainly controlled the Chl a biomass and phytoplankton communities by nutrient concentrations.The high nutrient Anadyr Water and Bering Shelf Water（An W and BSW） controlled region have high Chl a levels and the diatom dominated community structure.In contrast,in the region occupied by low-nutrient like Alaska Coastal Water（ACW）,the Chl a biomass was low,with pico-and nano-phytoplankton as dominated species,such as prasinophytes,chrysophytes and cryptophytes.However,over the off-shelf,the ice cover condition which would affect the physical and nutrient concentrations of the water masses,in consequence had a greater impact on the phytoplankton community structure.Diatom dominated in ice cover region and its contribution to Chl a biomass was up to 75%.In the region close to the Mendeleev Abyssal Plain（MAP）,controlled by sea-ice melt water with relatively high salinity（MW-HS）,higher nutrient and Chl a concentrations were found and the phytoplankton was dominated by pico-and nano-algae,while the diatom abundance reduced to 33%.In the southern Canada Basin,an ice-free basin（IfB） with the lowest nutrient concentrations and most freshened surface water,low Chl a biomass was a consequence of low nutrients.The ice retreating and a prolonged period of open ocean may not be beneficial to the carbon export efficiency due to reducing the Chl a biomass or intriguing smaller size algae growth.
Lateral diffusion and fatty acid composition in vascular smooth muscle membrane from stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats.

Abstract:We measured membrane fluidity and fatty acid composition in cultured vascular smooth muscle cells from stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive and Wistar-Kyoto normotensive rats. Membrane fluidity was measured as a lateral diffusion of 5 N (octadecanoyl) aminofluorescein using fluorescence microscopy and fluorescence recovery after photobleaching. Fatty acid composition of membrane fractions was measured using high performance liquid chromatography. Lateral diffusion was significantly lower (the membrane had lower fluidity) in vascular smooth muscle cells from stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats as compared to those cells isolated from Wistar-Kyoto reference strain. The ratio of arachidonic acid to total fatty acids was 0.058 +/- 0.007 in the plasma membrane from stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats and 0.036 +/- 0.005 in that from Wistar-Kyoto rats, P = .005. Similarly, the ratios of arachidonic to oleic acid and arachidonic to palmitic acid were significantly greater in cells from stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (P = .002 for difference in each ratio). These results show decreased lateral diffusion (decreased membrane fluidity) in vascular smooth muscle cells from stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats. This is associated with increased content of arachidonic acid, the major precursor of prostaglandins and other eicosanoids. We postulate that local changes in the unsaturated fatty acid composition related to arachidonic acid storage and release contribute to reduced membrane fluidity in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats.
Climate change drives fish communities: Changing multiple facets of fish biodiversity in the Northwest Pacific Ocean

Abstract:Global marine biodiversity is experiencing significant alterations due to climate change. Incorporating phylogenetic and functional diversity may provide novel insights into these impacts. This study used an ensemble model approach (random forest and boosted regression tree), to predict the habitat distribution of 47 fish species in the Northwestern Pacific under contemporary (2000-2014) and future scenarios (2040-2050, 2090-2100). We first examined the relationship between eleven functional traits and habitat changes, predicting the spatial distribution of functional traits within fish communities. A significant correlation was observed between temperature preference and habitat changes, highlighting the vulnerability of cold-water species and potential advantages for warm-water species in the future. Moreover, fish communities exhibited a spatial gradient distribution with southern regions characterized by shorter-lived and earlier maturity, contrasting with longer-lived and later maturity species in the north. Secondly, to assess the impact of climate change on marine biodiversity, we explored the taxonomic, phylogenetic, and functional diversity under contemporary and future scenarios, revealing higher indices in the East China Sea (ECS) and the coastal sea of Japan, with the Taiwan Strait emerging as a contemporary biodiversity hotspot. In future scenarios, the three biodiversity indices would decline in the Yellow Sea and ECS, but increase in the sea beyond the continental shelf, coastal sea of Hokkaido, and Sea of Okhotsk. Lastly, we explored processes and mechanisms in the change of community composition. By quantifying β-diversity, we identified species loss (nestedness) as the primary driver of fish community change by 2040-2050, with species replacement (turnover) predicted to become dominant in the far future. Our results explore the potential changes in multiple facets of fish biodiversity, providing crucial insights for policymakers aiming to protect fish resources and biodiversity.
Functional Trait Responses of Macrobenthos to Anthropogenic Pressure in Three Temperate Intertidal Communities

Abstract:With the increasing impact of human activities on marine ecosystems, there is a growing need to assess how the components of marine ecosystems (e.g., macrobenthos) respond to these anthropogenic pressures. In this work, the trait-based approach was used to assess the effects of anthropogenic pressures represented by the area of land-based aquaculture pond (Pond Area) and heavy metals on the macrobenthic communities in three intertidal zones[Aoshan Bay (AO), Wenquan River and Daren River (RW), and Xiaodao Bay (XD)] of Laoshan Bay, Shandong Peninsula, China. Compared with RW and XD, AO was under more pressure in terms of the average concentrations of heavy metals and total organic carbon (TOC) in sediments and also in the Pond Area. Fuzzy correspondence analysis (FCA) showed that there were significant differences in the composition of functional traits among the three regions (PERMANOVA; p < 0.05). In the highly polluted area, macrobenthic communities exhibited a combination of traits, such as relatively short life span, weak mobility, feeding on deposits, and more tolerant to organic matter, whereas in a less polluted area, they exhibited a combination of traits, such as relatively long life span, relatively high mobility, and more sensitivity to organic matter. The RDA results showed that the distribution of the trait modalities was significantly affected by heavy metals (Hg and Cd), TOC, Pond Area, and sampled location. Variation partitioning analysis (VPA) indicated that the shared influence of sediment-related pollution factors and Pond Area contributed most to the variance of the functional traits, which implied that human activities directly and/or indirectly lead to changes in functional traits of macrobenthic communities in the intertidal zones.

Abstract:The Arctic region has been the focus of increasing attention as an ecosystem that is highly sensitive to changes associated with global warming. Although it was assumed to be vulnerable to changes in climate, a limited number of studies have been conducted on the surface sediment bacteria of Arctic fjorden. This study assessed the diversity and distribution pattern of bacterial communities in eight marine sediments along the seafloor in a high Arctic fjorden (Kongsfjorden, Svalbard). A total of 822 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were identified by Illumina MiSeq sequencing, targeting the V3–V4 hypervariable regions of the 16S rRNA gene. In these surface marine sediments, more than half of the sequences belonged to the phylum Proteobacteria, followed by Bacteroidetes, Verrucomicrobia, Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi and Lentisphaerae. The bacterial genera Marinicella, Desulfobulbus, Lutimonas, Sulfurovum and clade SEEP-SRB4 were dominant in all samples. Analysis of similarity indicated that bacterial communities were significantly different among the inner, central and outer basins (r2 = 0.5, P = 0.03 < 0.05). Canonical correspondence analysis and permutation tests revealed that location depth (r2 = 0.87, P < 0.01), temperature (r2 = 0.88, P < 0.01) and salinity (r2 = 0.88, P < 0.05) were the most significant factors that correlated with the bacterial communities in the sediments. 28 differentially abundant taxonomic clades in the inner and outer basin with an LDA score higher than 2.0 were found by the LEfSe method. The Spearman correlation heat map revealed different degrees of correlation between most major OTUs and environmental factors, while some clades have an inverse correlation with environmental factors. The spatial patterns of bacterial communities along the Kongsfjorden may offer insight into the ecological responses of prokaryotes to climate change in the Arctic ecosystem, which makes it necessary to continue with monitoring.
Interannual and Decadal Variabilities of Phytoplankton Community in the Bering Sea and the Arctic Ocean: a Case Study of Relationship with ENSO and Arctic Oscillation Abnormity

Abstract:We used molecular biomarkers (brassicasterol, dinosterol and C37 alkenones) measured from the surface sediments of the Bering Sea, the Chukchi Sea and the western Arctic Ocean in years of 1999 and 2010 to represent the groups of phytoplankton (diatoms, dinoflagellates and coccolithophores) and reconstruct the phytoplankton composition structure and biomass. The distribution of concentrations of three biomarkers were compatible to previous studies on measured phytoplankton, which showed that the phytoplankton biomass was most abundant in the Chukchi Sea, followed by the Bering Sea and the western Arctic Ocean, and diatoms were the dominant group. It suggests that molecular biomarkers are the suitable indicators of phytoplankton composition, structure and abundance. A record of biomarkers in a sediment core (NB01) collected at the Bering Sea in 2010 presented that the biomass of three phytoplankton groups increased in past 107 years, and their variation patterns were consistent. The synchronous increase of concentrations of phytoplankton biomarkers and cholesterol, a proxy of zooplankton biomass, implied that the primary production increased intensely in the last hundreds of years, corresponding to the trend of sea-ice melting as a result of global warming. Moreover, our results suggested that the combined effect of the anormal interannual changes of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Arctic Oscillations (AO) played a key role in regulating the interannual and decadal variations of phytoplankton biomass and community composition, giving us an insight into the impact of atmospheric circulation on phytoplankton production and carbon flux in the Arctic seas.

Abstract:<p>The effects of multiple natural and anthropogenic stressors on the functional trait composition and diversity of marine macrobenthic communities in Laoshan Bay were investigated using biological trait analysis (BTA). Seven traits, including 27 trait modalities and four functional diversity indices (functional richness, functional evenness, functional divergence, and Rao's quadratic entropy), were considered. The results of RLQ (environmental variables (R), species taxa (L), and traits (Q)) and variance partitioning analysis (VPA) showed that the trait compositions and functional diversity of macrobenthic communities were influenced by a combination of stressors, among which heavy metals were the major factors. At the sites with high heavy metal pollution, the prevalent traits were infauna, burrower, and deposit feeder, whereas epifauna, carnivores and crawlers were dominant at the sites of low heavy metal contamination. The impact of natural environmental gradients on macrobenthic communities is also worthy of attention.</p>

Abstract:Abstract Changes in species composition and biomass of Arctic benthic communities are predicted to occur in response to environmental changes associated with oceanic warming and sea-ice loss. Such changes will likely impact ecosystem function, including flows of energy and organic material through the Arctic marine food web. Oxygen consumption rates can be used to quantify differences in metabolic demand among species and estimate the effects of shifting community structure on benthic carbon consumption. Closed-system respirometry using non-invasive oxygen optodes was conducted onboard the R/V Sikuliaq in June 2017 and 2018 on six dominant species of benthic macrofauna from the northern Bering and southern Chukchi Sea shelves, including five bivalve species (Macoma sp., Serripes groenlandicus, Astarte sp., Hiatella arctica and Nuculana pernula) and one amphipod species (Ampelisca macrocephala). Results revealed species-specific respiration rates with high metabolic demand for S. groenlandicus and A. macrocephala compared to that of the other species. For a hypothetical 0.1-g ash-free dry mass individual, the standard metabolic rate of S. groenlandicus would be 4.3 times higher than that of Astarte sp. Overall, carbon demand ranged from 8 to 475 μg C individual−1 day−1 for the species and sizes of individuals measured. The allometric scaling of respiration rate with biomass also varied among species. The scaling coefficient was similar for H. arctica, A. macrocephala and Astarte sp., while it was high for S. groenlandicus and low for Macoma sp. These results suggest that observed shifts in spatial distribution of the dominant macrofaunal taxa across this region will impact carbon demand of the benthic community. Hence, ecosystem models seeking to incorporate benthic system functionality may need to differentiate between communities that exhibit different oxygen demands.

Environmental gradients shape microbiome assembly and stability in the East China sea

Abstract:Microbiomes play a key role in marine ecosystem functioning and sustainability. Their organization and stability in coastal areas, particularly in anthropogenic-influenced regions, however, remains unclear compared with an understanding of how microbial community shifts respond to marine environmental gradients. Here, the assembly and community associations across vertical and horizontal gradients in the East China Sea are systematically researched. The seawater microbial communities possessed higher robustness and lower fragmentation and vulnerability compared to the sediment microbiomes. Spatial gradients act as a deterministic filtering factor for microbiome organization. Microbial communities had lower phylogenetic distance and higher niche breadth in the nearshore and offshore areas compared to intermediate areas. The phylogenetic distance of microbiomes decreased from the surface to the bottom but the niche breadth was enhanced in surface and bottom environments. Vertical gradients destabilized microbial associations, while the community diversity was enhanced. Multivariate regression tree analysis and canonical correspondence analysis indicated that depth, distance from shore, nutrient availability, temperature, salinity, and chlorophyll a, affected the distribution and co-occurrence of microbial groups. Our results highlight the crucial roles of environmental gradients in determining microbiome association and stability. These results improve our understanding of the survival strategies/adaptive mechanisms of microbial communities in response to environmental variation and provide new insights for protecting the ecosystems and maintaining the sustainability of ecological functions.

Abstract:Environmental change in the Arctic has impacted the composition and structure of marine food webs. Tracking feeding ecology changes of culturally-valued Arctic char ( Salvelinus alpinus ) and ringed seals ( Pusa hispida ) can provide an indication of the ecological significance of climate change in a vulnerable region. We characterized how changes in sea ice conditions, sea surface temperature (SST), and primary productivity affected the feeding ecology of these two keystone species over a 13- and 18-year period, respectively, in northern Labrador, Canada. Arctic char fed consistently on pelagic resources (δ 13 C) but shifted over time to feeding at a higher trophic level (δ 15 N) and on more marine/offshore resources (δ 34 S), which correlated with decreases in chlorophyll a concentration. A reduction in Arctic char condition factor and lipid content was associated with higher trophic position. Ringed seals also shifted to feeding at a higher trophic level, but on more pelagic resources, which was associated with lower SST and higher chlorophyll a concentrations. Years with abnormally high SSTs and reduced sea ice concentrations resulted in large isotopic niche sizes for both species, suggesting abrupt change can result in more variable feeding. Changes in abundance and distribution of species long valued by the Inuit of Labrador could diminish food security.

Benthic taxonomic and functional diversity change across a depth gradient in the Southern Benguela Shelf ecoregion

Abstract:Functional trait-based approaches improve biodiversity assessment and have consequently been gaining traction in ecology, including marine benthic studies. However, taxonomic diversity is still the default biodiversity metric applied to monitor benthic community responses to environmental variation despite not always representing functional diversity change. Therefore, we used Biological Traits Analysis (BTA) to quantify functional diversity for infauna and epifauna communities collected from the same locations across a depth gradient in the Southern Benguela Shelf ecoregion. Infauna experienced an increase in functional uniqueness with depth, whereas epifauna experienced an increase in functional redundancy with depth. As a result, the epifauna species assemblage predicted 43 % of the epifauna trait assemblage, whereas the infauna species assemblage predicted only 8 % of the infauna trait assemblage. These findings suggest that taxonomic diversity and functional diversity changes are not congruent within and between marine benthic faunal groups. We emphasize the need to utilise both biodiversity metrics when quantifying marine biodiversity for conservation and management objectives.
Modeling demersal fish and benthic invertebrate assemblages in support of marine conservation planning

Abstract:Marine classification schemes based on abiotic surrogates often inform regional marine conservation planning in lieu of detailed biological data. However, these schemes may poorly represent ecologically relevant biological patterns required for effective design and management strategies. We used a community-level modeling approach to characterize and delineate representative mesoscale (tens to thousands of kilometers) assemblages of demersal fish and benthic invertebrates in the Northwest Atlantic. Hierarchical clustering of species occurrence data from four regional annual multispecies trawl surveys revealed three to six groupings (predominant assemblage types) in each survey region, broadly associated with geomorphic and oceanographic features. Indicator analyses identified 3-34 emblematic taxa of each assemblage type. Random forest classifications accurately predicted assemblage distributions from environmental covariates (AUC > 0.95) and identified thermal limits (annual minimum and maximum bottom temperatures) as important predictors of distribution in each region. Using forecasted oceanographic conditions for the year 2075 and a regional classification model, we projected assemblage distributions in the southernmost bioregion (Scotian Shelf-Bay of Fundy) under a high emissions climate scenario (RCP 8.5). Range expansions to the northeast are projected for assemblages associated with warmer and shallower waters of the Western Scotian Shelf over the 21st century as thermal habitat on the relatively cooler Eastern Scotian Shelf becomes more favorable. Community-level modeling provides a biotic-informed approach for identifying broadscale ecological structure required for the design and management of ecologically coherent, representative, well-connected networks of Marine Protected Areas. When combined with oceanographic forecasts, this modeling approach provides a spatial tool for assessing sensitivity and resilience to climate change, which can improve conservation planning, monitoring, and adaptive management.

Abstract:Climate change is threatening marine ecosystems on a global scale but particularly so in the Arctic. As a result of warming, species are shifting their distributions, altering marine communities and predator-prey interactions. This is known as the Atlantification of the Arctic. Warming may favor short-lived, opportunistic species such as cephalopods, marine mollusks that previously have been hypothesized to be winners in an ocean of change. To detect temporal regional trends in biodiversity, long-term annual surveys in hotspots of climate change are an unparalleled source of data. Here, we use 18 years of annual bottom trawl data (2005–2022) to analyse cephalopods in the western Barents Sea. More specifically, our research goals are to assess temporal trends in cephalopod fauna composition, abundance and biomass, and to relate these trends to climate change in the western Barents Sea. Main changes in cephalopod diversity and distribution occurred in mid-2000s and early 2010s, which corresponds with a period of warming in the Arctic since the late 1990s/early 2000s. Repeated increased occurrence of the boreal-subtropical cephalopods was recorded from 2005–2013 to 2014–2022. Moreover, the abundance of cephalopods in the area (in general and for most taxa) increased from 2005–2013 to 2014–2022. These observations suggest that the cephalopod community of the Barents Sea is subjected to Atlantification since the 2005–2013 period. This corresponds with previously reported evidence of the Atlantification in fishes and benthic invertebrates in the Barents Sea and benthic invertebrates. 'Typical' Arctic cephalopod species such as Bathypolypus spp., Gonatus fabricii and Rossia spp., however, are still much more abundant in the western Barents Sea compared to the deep-sea and the boreal-subtropical species. We also found indirect indications for body-size reduction in Bathypolypus spp. from 2005–2013 to 2014–2022. Overall, the temporal trends in the Barents Sea cephalopod fauna provide evidence for changing marine communities in the Arctic.

Warming changes the life history composition of marine fish communities at high latitudes

Abstract:Across marine ecosystems, species are redistributing as a response to increased sea temperatures. In the Arctic, rapid warming causes poleward shifts of boreal species. Which species are redistributing and the drivers of their movements can be related to their life history traits. Here, we aimed to characterize and analyze the spatio-temporal changes in the life history strategy (LHS) composition of fish communities in the Barents Sea (2004-2017). We performed an archetype analysis to characterize species’ LHS based on their life history traits and related it to the equilibrium-periodic-opportunistic framework. Fish species in temperate ecosystems were documented to be largely distributed along the opportunistic-periodic continuum, whereas many fish species in the Barents Sea are distributed along the opportunistic-equilibrium continuum, illustrating the specificity of Arctic fish LHS. During the study period, boreal periodic species showed an increase in the central Barents Sea, a zoogeographic transition area. Simultaneously, Arctic opportunistic species retracted to cold waters, and the abundance of equilibrium strategists increased in the eastern Barents Sea. The expansion of periodic species may be explained by the configuration of their traits. This includes a high reproductive potential, broader diet, and migratory behavior. These traits might increase their tolerance and adaptive capacity to a changing environment. Fish LHS play a crucial role in fisheries management, particularly in promoting better fishing practices for vulnerable populations. By understanding the various LHS adopted by different fish species and their environmental preferences, fisheries managers can develop informed fishing strategies on a broader scale.

Abstract:The Laptev Sea is a major Marginal Sea in the Western Arctic Ocean. The Arctic amplification brought by global warming influences the hydrological properties of rivers passing through the permafrost zone, which would alter the biological community structure at continental margin. In this study, the structure, assembly, and gene expression of planktonic microbial communities in two estuaries (Protoka Ularovskaya River Estuary, PURE; Lena River Estuary, LRE) of Laptev Sea were examined to investigate the environmental effects of polar rivers. PURE and LRE exhibited distinct environmental characteristics: low temperature and high salinity for PURE, and high temperature and low salinity for LRE, influenced by runoff size. Salinity more closely influenced microbial communities in LRE, with freshwater species playing a significant role in community composition. The findings revealed differences between two estuaries in community composition and diversity. Prokaryotes and microeukaryotes had shown different assembly patterns in response to habitat changes caused by terrestrial freshwater input. Furthermore, compared with the PURE, the co-occurrence and inter-domain network of the LRE, which was more affected by terrestrial input, was more complex and stable. Functional gene prediction revealed a higher gene expression of methane metabolism in LRE than in PURE, particularly those related to methane oxidation, and this conclusion could help better explore the impact of global warming on the methane cycle in the Arctic Marginal Seas. This study explored the increased freshwater runoffs under the background of global warming dramatically affect Arctic microplankton communities from community structure, assembly and gene expression aspects.

Abstract:Notably, increasing temperatures cause a reorganisation of species and their traits. Here, we study warming‐related shifts by analysing a macroinvertebrate benthic dataset spanning 32 years. Our results highlight minimal changes in biodiversity metrics but significant positive trends in ecological functioning, specifically how species influence ecosystem properties via their traits. Yet, these trends are independent of temperature shifts since there was only a weak increase in the thermal preferences at the community level. While warming takes precedence in climate change studies, other direct factors that structure communities might be overlooked. Rising global temperatures are often identified as the key driver impacting ecosystems and the services they provide by affecting biodiversity structure and function. A disproportionate amount of our understanding of biodiversity and function is from short‐term experimental studies and static values of biodiversity indices, lacking the ability to monitor long‐term trends and capture community dynamics. Here, we analyse a biennial dataset spanning 32 years of macroinvertebrate benthic communities and their functional response to increasing temperatures. We monitored changes in species' thermal affinities to examine warming‐related shifts by selecting their mid‐point global temperature distribution range and linking them to species' traits. We employed a novel weighted metric using Biological Trait Analysis (BTA) to gain better insights into the ecological potential of each species by incorporating species abundance and body size and selecting a subset of traits that represent five ecosystem functions: bioturbation activity, sediment stability, nutrient recycling and higher and lower trophic production. Using biodiversity indices (richness, Simpson's diversity and vulnerability) and functional indices (richness, Rao's Q and redundancy), the community structure showed no significant change over time with a narrow range of variation. However, we show shifts in species composition with warming and increases in the abundance of individuals, which altered ecosystem functioning positively and/or non‐linearly. Yet, when higher taxonomic groupings than species were excluded from the analysis, there was only a weak increase in the measured change in community‐weighted average thermal affinities, suggesting changes in ecosystem functions over time occur independently of temperature increase‐related shifts in community composition. Other environmental factors driving species composition and abundance may be more important in these subtidal macrobenthic communities. This challenges the prevailing emphasis on temperature as the primary driver of ecological response to climate change and emphasises the necessity for a comprehensive understanding of the temporal dynamics of complex systems.

Abstract:A thorough understanding of ecosystem functioning in the Arctic Ocean, a region under severe threat by climate change, requires detailed studies on linkages between biodiversity and ecosystem stability. The identification of keystone species with special relevance for ecosystem stability is of great importance, yet difficult to achieve with established community assessments. In the case of microbes, metabarcoding and metagenomics offer fundamental insights into community structure and function, yet remain limited regarding the ecological relevance of individual taxa. To overcome this limitation, we have developed an analytical approach based on three different methods: Co-Occurrence Networks, Convergent Cross Mapping, and Energy Landscape Analysis. These methods enable the identification of seasonal communities in microbial ecosystems, elucidate their interactions, and predict potential stable community configurations under varying environmental conditions. Combining the outcomes of these three methods allowed us to define 38 keystone species in the Arctic Fram Strait that represent different trophic modes within the food web, and might signify indicator for ecosystem functionality under the impact of environmental change. Our research reveals a clear seasonal pattern in phytoplankton composition, with distinct assemblages characterizing the phases of carbon fixation (polar day) and consumption (polar night). Species interactions exhibited strong seasonality, with significant influence of summer communities on winter communities but not vice versa. Spring harbored two distinct groups: consumers (heterotrophs), strongly linked to polar night, and photoautotrophs (mainly Bacillariophyta). These groups are not causally related, suggesting a “winter reset” with selective effects that facilitates a new blooming period, allowing survivors of the dark phase to emerge. Energy Landscape Analysis showed that winter communities are more stable than summer communities. In summary, the ecological landscape of the Fram Strait can be categorized into two distinct phases: a production phase governed by specialized organisms that are highly responsive to environmental variability, and a heterotrophic phase dominated by generalist species with enhanced resilience.

Abstract:Most deep-sea organisms feed on the organic matter produced in surface waters and settle on the seafloor. In polar regions, sea ice algal detritus and phytoplankton detritus are the main food sources for benthic fauna that reach the seafloor in pulses. Climate change affects the extension and duration of sea ice cover, which may affect the quantity and quality of food reaching the seafloor, resulting in less ice algae and more phytoplankton biomass. We conducted onboard pulse-chase experiments using sediment cores collected from Baffin Bay, Amundsen Gulf, and the Beaufort Sea to study how macroinfaunal communities in the Canadian Arctic use both food sources. Dual-labeled (13C and 15N) diatoms, Thalassiosira nordenskioeldii (phytoplankton treatment) and Synedra hyperborea (ice algae treatment), were used as tracers of food consumption by macroinfaunal groups. Community structure was analyzed in each region and differences were found among sites. The total uptake of both food sources was higher in Baffin Bay; the macroinfaunal biomass was the highest, with facultative filter/surface-deposit feeders accounting for more than 70% of the total biomass. The Baffin Bay station was the only location where there were notable variations in the biomass-specific uptake of ice algae and phytoplankton detritus by the bivalves and polychaetes, as well as by the community as a whole. At the same time, both food sources were consumed in equal quantities at the Amundsen Gulf and Beaufort Sea stations. This suggests that ice algae are not preferentially uptaken, and macroinfaunal communities may be resilient to a decrease in ice algal input to the seafloor inflicted by sea ice reduction.
