Abstract:Individuals often fail to accurately predict others' decisions in a risky environment. In this paper, we investigate the characteristics and causes of this prediction discrepancy. Participants completed a risky decision-making task mixed with different domains (gain vs. loss) and probabilities (small vs. large), with some participants making decisions for themselves (the actor) and the others predicting the actors' decisions (the predictor). The results demonstrated a prediction discrepancy: predictions were more risk-averse than the actual decisions over small-probability gains and more risk-seeking over large-probability gains, while these patterns were reversed in the loss domain. Reported and predicted levels of emotional stimulation revealed a pattern that is consistent with the notion of risk-as-feelings and empathy gaps. Mediation analysis provided strong evidence that such prediction discrepancy is driven mainly by the predictor's underestimate of the intensity (not the impact) of the actor's emotional state.
Rorschach’s Idea of a “Movement” Response in the Light of Recent Philosophy and Psychology of Perception

Abstract:The proper definition of the kinesthetic or movement (M) category has been the subject of many controversies within the Rorschach community; see, for example, the discussion between Kramer and Exner (Kramer, 1991; Exner, 1991). The present paper elucidates the nature of movement responses by means of a theoretical analysis of some of the key concepts involved. This analysis in part is of a philosophical character, but I also bring in several recent results from the psychology and neurophysiology of perception which in my opinion are crucial to a correct understanding of the movement responses. The first two parts of the essay describe the basic controversy between those Rorschach theorists who – like Hermann Rorschach himself and Ewald Bohm – hold that kinesthetic identification is a necessary ingredient in any movement response, and those – like John Exner – who want to drop this condition from the definition. This controversy is shown to involve another fundamental issue, namely: In what sense is movement a determinant, and what should be meant by a determinant? The third section also discusses a main objection against keeping Rorschach’s original definition: its reliance on introspective criteria. The fourth part takes a historical perspective, describing the philosophical and psychological tradition called associationism, discussing certain ideas concerning kinesthetic sensibility brought forward within that tradition, and finally analyzing the nature and extent of Hermann Rorschach’s commitment to associationism, especially as manifested in his doctoral dissertation. Some main elements of the 20th-century psychological and philosophical critique of associationism are outlined in Sections 5–6, and the relevance of this critique for the definition of a movement response is explained. Converging evidence from different sources, such as child psychology and clinical and primate neuropsychology, is then brought together in Section 7 to show that recent work on perception supports Hermann Rorschach’s basic intuition about the M category. In Section 8, a new definition of movement responses is given in terms of practical perception and immediate visuo-motor couplings. Finally, in Section 9, the possible use of Rorschach data in the experimental analysis of motion-from-form perception is pointed out.

Abstract:Dysfunction in risky decision-making has been regarded as one potential contributing factor to functional impairment exhibited in patients with schizophrenia. Literature has revealed suboptimal risky decision-making in chronic schizophrenia patients. However, abnormality in risky decision-making has not been investigated in the early stage of illness. This study aimed to examine whether early schizophrenia patients displayed aberrant risky decision-making using two well-validated paradigms including Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART; Lejuez et al., 2002) and Risky-Gains Task (RGT; Paulus et al., 2003). Thirty-three clinically-stable patients diagnosed with DSM-V schizophrenia-spectrum disorder (including schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder or schizophreniform disorder) were recruited from specialized early intervention service for psychosis in Hong Kong. A group of healthy controls (n=32), matched with age, gender and educational levels, was enrolled for comparison. All participants were evaluated with a brief battery of cognitive assessment and two computerized risky decision-making tasks. Symptom assessment was also conducted for patients. In both BART and RGT, patients with early schizophrenia-spectrum disorder performed worse than healthy controls regarding total points gained and reaction time. In BART, patients had significantly lower adjusted scores (F(1,63)=7.8, p<0.05) and lower balloon exploration rates than controls (F(1,63)=11.5, p<0.001), indicating that patients exhibited a tendency toward risk-aversion. In GRT, three-way analysis of variance revealed significant group x response interaction (F(1,63)=7.8, p<0.05), with post-hoc independent t-test showing that patients significantly preferred safe over risky options than controls (t=2.6, p<0.05). There were no significant correlations of risky decision-making parameters with symptom ratings and cognitive functions. We extend previous findings of chronic samples to patients with early schizophrenia-spectrum disorder and indicate that suboptimal risky decision-making with risk-aversion preference has also been observed in the early course of illness. Further research is warranted to clarify the longitudinal change of aberrant risk-aversive behavioral patterns and its relationship with prospective functional and symptom outcomes.

Abstract:Human beings exhibit varying risk-taking behaviors in response to different risk levels. Despite numerous studies on risk-taking in decision-making, the neural mechanisms of decision-making regarding risk levels remains unclear. To investigate the neural correlates of individual differences in risk-taking under different risk-levels, we analyzed behavioral data of the Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART) and resting-state functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (rs-fMRI) data of healthy participants (22–39 years, N = 93) from the University of California, Los Angeles Consortium for Neuropsychiatric Phenomics dataset. In the BART, the participants decided to pump for more points or stop pumping to avoid explosion of the balloons, where the risk level was manipulated by the explosion likelihood which was distinguished by the balloon color (blue for low-, red for high- risk condition). Compared with low-risk condition, the participants pumped less number, exploded more balloons, and showed more variability in pump numbers in high-risk condition, demonstrating the effective manipulation of the risky level. Next, resting state features and functional connectivity (rsFC) strength were associated with behavioral measures in low- and high-risk conditions. We found that the explosion number of balloons were correlated with the low frequency fluctuations (ALFF) in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (L. DLPFC), the rsFC strength between L. DLPFC and the left anterior orbital gyrus in the low-risk condition. In the high-risk condition, we found variability in pump numbers was correlated with the ALFF in the left middle/superior frontal gyrus, the fractional ALFF (fALFF) in the medial segment of precentral gyrus (M. PrG), and the rsFC strength between the M. PrG and bilateral precentral gyrus. Our results highlighted significance of the L. DLPFC in lower risky decision making and the precentral gyrus in higher risky decision making, suggesting that distinctive neural correlates underlie the individual differences of decision-making under different risk level.

Aberrant computational mechanisms of social learning and decision-making in schizophrenia and borderline personality disorder

Abstract:Psychiatric disorders are ubiquitously characterized by debilitating social impairments. These difficulties are thought to emerge from aberrant social inference. In order to elucidate the underlying computational mechanisms, patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder (N = 29), schizophrenia (N = 31), and borderline personality disorder (N = 31) as well as healthy controls (N = 34) performed a probabilistic reward learning task in which participants could learn from social and nonsocial information. Patients with schizophrenia and borderline personality disorder performed more poorly on the task than healthy controls and patients with major depressive disorder. Broken down by domain, borderline personality disorder patients performed better in the social compared to the non-social domain. In contrast, controls and MDD patients showed the opposite pattern and SCZ patients showed no difference between domains. In effect, borderline personality disorder patients gave up a possible overall performance advantage by concentrating their learning in the social at the expense of the non-social domain. We used computational modeling to assess learning and decision-making parameters estimated for each participant from their behavior. This enabled additional insights into the underlying learning and decision-making mechanisms. Patients with borderline personality disorder showed slower learning from social and non-social information and an exaggerated sensitivity to changes in environmental volatility, both in the non-social and the social domain, but more so in the latter. Regarding decision-making the modeling revealed that compared to controls and major depression patients, patients with borderline personality disorder and schizophrenia showed a stronger reliance on social relative to non-social information when making choices. Depressed patients did not differ significantly from controls in this respect. Overall, our results are consistent with the notion of a general interpersonal hypersensitivity in borderline personality disorder and schizophrenia based on a shared computational mechanism characterized by an over-reliance on beliefs about others in making decisions and by an exaggerated need to make sense of others during learning specifically in borderline personality disorder.People suffering from psychiatric disorders frequently experience difficulties in social interaction, such as an impaired ability to use social signals to build representations of others and use these to guide behavior. Compuational models of learning and decision-making enable the characterization of individual patterns in learning and decision-making mechanisms that may be disorder-specific or disorder-general. We employed this approach to investigate the behavior of healthy participants and patients diagnosed with depression, schizophrenia, and borderline personality disorder while they performed a probabilistic reward learning task which included a social component. Patients with schizophrenia and borderline personality disorder performed more poorly on the task than controls and depressed patients. In addition, patients with BPD concentrated their learning efforts more on the social compared to the non-social information. Computational modeling additionally revealed that borderline personality disorder patients showed a reduced flexibility in the weighting of newly obtained social and non-social information when learning about their predictive values. Instead, we found exagerrated learning of the volatility of social and non-social information. Additionally, we found a pattern shared between patients with borderline personality disorder and schizophrenia who both showed an over-reliance on predictions about social information during decision-making. Our modeling, therefore, provides a computational account of the exaggerated need to make sense of and rely on one's interpretation of others' behavior, which is prominent in both disorders.

Abstract:Background: The risk preference during decision-making and the neural substrates involved in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) remained unclear. The current study was designed to evaluate the risk-taking behaviors during decision-making and neural correlates in patients with OCD, thereby providing a deeper insight into their impaired decision-making function. Methods: Fifty-one patients with OCD and 50 healthy controls (HCs) were included in this study. All subjects underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans while completing the Balloon Analog Risk Task (BART). The behavior indicator and cognitive model parameter in BART, as well as the neural correlates of risk-taking behaviors were analyzed. Results: Compared to HCs, the OCD group performed a significantly higher level of risk-averse behaviors, and the cognitive model parameter revealed that patients with OCD tend to decrease their risk level after receiving negative feedbacks during BART. The fMRI results based on prespecified brain regions showed that the OCD group exhibited significantly decreased activation modulated by risk levels both in the left and right insula. Limitations: The effect of medication in this study could not be completely ruled out, and it is difficult to temporally separate different states of decision-making in the BART. Conclusions: Individuals with OCD exhibited a higher level of risk aversion during decision-making process, and the dysfunction of the insula may be the neural basis of the increased risk aversion in OCD. These findings provide further insights into the mechanism of risk aversion and impaired decision-making function in individuals with OCD.

This study delves into the complex relationship between NSSI and depression severity in decision making and its cognitive underpinnings. Methods: We assessed decision behaviors in 57 patients with major depressive disorder and NSSI, 42 patients with major depressive disorder without NSSI, and 142 healthy control participants using the Balloon Analog Risk Task, which involves risk taking, learning, and exploration in uncertain scenarios. Using computational modeling, we dissected the nuanced cognitive dimensions influencing decision behaviors. A novel statistical method was developed to elucidate interaction effects between NSSI and depression severity. Results: Contrary to common perceptions, we found that individuals with NSSI behaviors were typically more risk averse. There was also a complex interaction between NSSI and depression severity in shaping risk-taking behaviors. As depressive symptoms intensified, the individuals with NSSI began to perceive less risk and behave more randomly. Conclusions: This research provides new insights into the cognitive aspects of NSSI and depression, highlighting the importance of considering the influence of comorbid mental disorders when investigating the cognitive underpinnings of such behaviors, especially in the context of prevalent cross-diagnostic phenomena such as NSSI behaviors.
Rationality and Psychological Accuracy of Risky Choice Models Based on Option- vs. Dimension-Wise Evaluations

Abstract:Two experiments were carried out to investigate psychological accuracy of risky choice models related either to classical or bounded rationality assumption. In line with the former, individuals trade-off outcomes and probabilities and choose the option with the highest weighted sum. Cumulative Prospect Theory (CPT) represents such models. In contrast, in models based on bounded rationality assumption, such as Priority Heuristic (PH) or Maximization of Cumulated Probability of Winning (MCPW), there is neither trade-off between payoffs and probabilities nor complex information integration, since choice is based on dimension-wise comparisons. The latter models differ in emphasizing the significance of either the amount or the probability of loss. Since previous findings do not support either hierarchy Experiment 1, in which 208 respondents chose one of four 2-mixed-outcome options, was designed to verify relative importance of amount and probability of loss. In Experiment 2 the relative accuracy of compensatory models based on global evaluations and non-compensatory models based on dimension-wise comparisons was compared. The focus is on reasoning represented by certain classes of models rather than on distinguishing between specific models within a given class. Information search was registered with a modified version of Mouselab Web. Choice fraction and process tracing indices were analyzed. It was found that respondents made more dimension- than option-wise transitions. However, other indices such as the fraction of information searched across options as well as the ratio of searched information about pay-offs and probabilities do not support either model. The choice strategies used by a majority of respondents varied across situations.
Unbending mind: Individuals with hoarding disorder do not modify decision strategy in response to feedback under risk

Abstract:Cognitive-behavioral models of hoarding disorder emphasize impairments in information processing and decision making in the genesis of hoarding symptomology. We propose and test the novel hypothesis that individuals with hoarding are maladaptively biased towards a deliberative decision style. While deliberative strategies are often considered normative, they are not always adaptable to the limitations imposed by many real-world decision contexts. We examined decision-making patterns in 19 individuals with hoarding and 19 healthy controls, using a behavioral task that quantifies selection of decision strategies in a novel environment with known probabilities (risk) in response to feedback. Consistent with prior literature, we found that healthy individuals tend to explore different decision strategies in the beginning of the experiment, but later, in response to feedback, they shift towards a compound strategy that balances expected values and risks. In contrast, individuals with hoarding follow a simple, deliberative, risk-neutral, value-based strategy from the beginning to the end of the task, irrespective of the feedback. This seemingly rational approach was not ecologically rational: individuals with hoarding and healthy individuals earned about the same amount of money, but it took individuals with hoarding a lot longer to do it: additional cognitive costs did not lead to additional benefits.

Abstract:The ability to make advantageous decisions under circumstances in which there is a risk of adverse consequences is an important component of adaptive behavior; however, extremes in risk taking (either high or low) can be maladaptive and are characteristic of a number of neuropsychiatric disorders. To better understand the contributions of various affective and cognitive factors to risky decision making, cohorts of male Long-Evans rats were trained in a "Risky Decision making Task" (RDT), in which they made discrete trial choices between a small, "safe" food reward and a large, "risky" food reward accompanied by varying probabilities of footshock. Experiment 1 evaluated the relative contributions of the affective stimuli (i.e., punishment vs. reward) to RDT performance by parametrically varying the magnitudes of the footshock and large reward. Varying the shock magnitude had a significant impact on choice of the large, "risky" reward, such that greater magnitudes were associated with reduced choice of the large reward. In contrast, varying the large, "risky" reward magnitude had minimal influence on reward choice. Experiment 2 compared individual variability in RDT performance with performance in an attentional set shifting task (assessing cognitive flexibility), a delayed response task (assessing working memory), and a delay discounting task (assessing impulsive choice). Rats characterized as risk averse in the RDT made more perseverative errors on the set shifting task than did their risk taking counterparts, whereas RDT performance was not related to working memory abilities or impulsive choice. In addition, rats that showed greater delay discounting (greater impulsive choice) showed corresponding poorer performance in the working memory task. Together, these results suggest that reward-related decision making under risk of punishment is more strongly influenced by the punishment than by the reward, and that risky and impulsive decision making are associated with distinct components of executive function.
Predicting psychosis across diagnostic boundaries: Behavioral and computational modeling evidence for impaired reinforcement learning in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder with a history of psychosis.

Abstract:There is increasing evidence that schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar disorder (BD) share a number of cognitive, neurobiological, and genetic markers. Shared features may be most prevalent among SZ and BD with a history of psychosis. This study extended this literature by examining reinforcement learning (RL) performance in individuals with SZ (n = 29), BD with a history of psychosis (BD+; n = 24), BD without a history of psychosis (BD-; n = 23), and healthy controls (HC; n = 24). RL was assessed through a probabilistic stimulus selection task with acquisition and test phases. Computational modeling evaluated competing accounts of the data. Each participant's trial-by-trial decision-making behavior was fit to 3 computational models of RL: (a) a standard actor-critic model simulating pure basal ganglia-dependent learning, (b) a pure Q-learning model simulating action selection as a function of learned expected reward value, and (c) a hybrid model where an actor-critic is "augmented" by a Q-learning component, meant to capture the top-down influence of orbitofrontal cortex value representations on the striatum. The SZ group demonstrated greater reinforcement learning impairments at acquisition and test phases than the BD+, BD-, and HC groups. The BD+ and BD- groups displayed comparable performance at acquisition and test phases. Collapsing across diagnostic categories, greater severity of current psychosis was associated with poorer acquisition of the most rewarding stimuli as well as poor go/no-go learning at test. Model fits revealed that reinforcement learning in SZ was best characterized by a pure actor-critic model where learning is driven by prediction error signaling alone. In contrast, BD-, BD+, and HC were best fit by a hybrid model where prediction errors are influenced by top-down expected value representations that guide decision making. These findings suggest that abnormalities in the reward system are more prominent in SZ than BD; however, current psychotic symptoms may be associated with reinforcement learning deficits regardless of a Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th Edition; American Psychiatric Association, 2013) diagnosis.

Abstract:Background: Impulsivity trait as a risk factor which typically displayed in risk decision among school youth. This study aims to examine behavioral and cognitive problems of risky decision among Chinese young people aged 15-25 years. The balloon analogue risk task (BART) and event-related potential (ERP) were combine used to explore the neural mechanism of risky decision process whether infected by impulsivity trait. Methods: A total of 31 subjects were included, including16 experimental subjects with risk behavior (RS), and 15 health control subjects with non-risk behavior (HC). BART were used to measure risk-taking propensity and ERP were to record in real time. RS vs. HC were compared to explain the relationship between impulsivity and risky decision. Results: Behavioral data in BART task shown that the RS subjects tended to make risky decisions. ERP results illustrate that P300 in RS subjects is more significant positive-going than HC that means dysfunction of cognitive control, and FRN in RS subjects is more negative-going than HC in negative feedback condition, which means individual with high impulsive would be more sensitive to unexpected outcome. Conclusions: Impulsiveness is a risk factor for school adolescent, because RS subjects performed more risky decision than control group, the evidence indicate that individual with high impulsiveness would lead to be less sensitive to harmful consequences and more inclination to immediate rewards. Therefore, the inclination of risk taking can be powerfully informed by different levels of impulsiveness.

Abstract:An increased propensity for risk taking is a hallmark of adolescent behavior with significant health and social consequences. Here, we elucidated cortical and subcortical regions associated with risky and risk-averse decisions and outcome evaluation using the Balloon Analog Risk Task in a large sample of adolescents (n = 256, 56% female, age 14 ± 0.6), including the level of risk as a parametric modulator. We also identified sex differences in neural activity. Risky decisions engaged regions that are parts of the salience, dorsal attention, and frontoparietal networks, but only the insula was sensitive to increasing risks in parametric analyses. During risk-averse decisions, the same networks covaried with parametric levels of risk. The dorsal striatum was engaged by both risky and risk-averse decisions, but was not sensitive to escalating risk. Negative-outcome processing showed greater activations than positive-outcome processing. Insula, lateral orbitofrontal cortex, middle, rostral, and superior frontal areas, rostral and caudal anterior cingulate cortex were activated only by negative outcomes, with a subset of regions associated with negative outcomes showing greater activation in females. Taken together, these results suggest that safe decisions are predicted by more accurate neural representation of increasing risk levels, whereas reward-related processes play a relatively minor role.

Increased Sensitivity to Effort and Perception of Effort in People with Schizophrenia

Abstract:Objective: Motivational deficits in schizophrenia are proposed to be attributable in part to abnormal effort-cost computations, calculations weighing the costs vs. the benefits of actions. Several reports have shown that people with schizophrenia display a reduced willingness to exert effort for monetary rewards when compared to controls. The primary goal of the current study was to further characterize reduced willingness to exert effort in schizophrenia by determining whether reduced willingness reflects (1) reduced sensitivity to reward, (2) increased sensitivity to effort, or (3) a combination of both. Design: We assessed effort-cost decision-making in 30 controls and 30 people with schizophrenia, using 2 separate experimental tasks. Critically, one paradigm allowed for independent estimation of effects of reward and effort sensitivity on choice behavior. The other task isolated effort sensitivity by measuring effort in the absence of reward. Clinical interviews and self-report questionnaires were administered to people with schizophrenia to determine negative symptom severity. Results: Across both tasks, we found evidence for reduced willingness to exert effort in people with schizophrenia compared to controls. Further, in both paradigms reduced willingness to exert effort was driven by increased sensitivity to effort in people with schizophrenia compared to controls. In contrast, measures of reward sensitivity did not significantly differ between groups. Surprisingly, we did not find correlations between task variables and measures of negative symptom severity. Conclusions and relevance: These findings further specify prior work by identifying a specific contributory role for increased effort sensitivity in effort-cost decision-making deficits in schizophrenia.

Abstract:Functional imaging studies examining the neural correlates of risk have mainly relied on paradigms involving exposure to simple chance gambles and an economic definition of risk as variance in the probability distribution over possible outcomes. However, there is little evidence that choices made during gambling tasks predict naturalistic risk-taking behaviors such as drug use, extreme sports, or even equity investing. To better understand the neural basis of naturalistic risk-taking, we scanned participants using fMRI while they completed the Balloon Analog Risk Task, an experimental measure that includes an active decision/choice component and that has been found to correlate with a number of naturalistic risk-taking behaviors. In the task, as in many naturalistic settings, escalating risk-taking occurs under uncertainty and might be experienced either as the accumulation of greater potential rewards, or as exposure to increasing possible losses (and decreasing expected value). We found that areas previously linked to risk and risk-taking (bilateral anterior insula, anterior cingulate cortex, and right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex) were activated as participants continued to inflate balloons. Interestingly, we found that ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) activity decreased as participants further expanded balloons. In light of previous findings implicating the vmPFC in value calculation, this result suggests that escalating risk-taking in the task might be perceived as exposure to increasing possible losses (and decreasing expected value) rather than the increasing potential total reward relative to the starting point of the trial. A better understanding of how neural activity changes with risk-taking behavior in the task offers insight into the potential neural mechanisms driving naturalistic risk-taking.

Abstract:Abstract Background and Hypothesis Disturbances in effort-cost decision-making have been highlighted as a potential transdiagnostic process underpinning negative symptoms in individuals with schizophrenia. However, recent studies using computational phenotyping show that individuals employ a range of strategies to allocate effort, and use of different strategies is associated with unique clinical and cognitive characteristics. Building on prior work in schizophrenia, this study evaluated whether effort allocation strategies differed in individuals with distinct psychotic disorders. Study Design We applied computational modeling to effort-cost decision-making data obtained from individuals with psychotic disorders (n = 190) who performed the Effort Expenditure for Rewards Task. The sample included 91 individuals with schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder, 90 individuals with psychotic bipolar disorder, and 52 controls. Study Results Different effort allocation strategies were observed both across and within different disorders. Relative to individuals with psychotic bipolar disorder, a greater proportion of individuals with schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder did not use reward value or probability information to guide effort allocation. Furthermore, across disorders, different effort allocation strategies were associated with specific clinical and cognitive features. Those who did not use reward value or probability information to guide effort allocation had more severe positive and negative symptoms, and poorer cognitive and community functioning. In contrast, those who only used reward value information showed a trend toward more severe positive symptoms. Conclusions These findings indicate that similar deficits in effort-cost decision-making may arise from different computational mechanisms across the psychosis spectrum.

Abstract:While making decisions under objective risk conditions, the probabilities of the consequences of the available options are either provided or calculable. Brand et al. (Neural Networks 19:1266–1276, 2006) introduced a model describing the neuro-cognitive processes involved in such decisions. In this model, executive functions associated with activity in the fronto-striatal loop are important for developing and applying decision-making strategies, and for verifying, adapting, or revising strategies according to feedback. Emotional rewards and punishments learned from such feedback accompany these processes. In this literature review, we found support for the role of executive functions, but also found evidence for the importance of further cognitive abilities in decision making. Moreover, in addition to reflective processing (driven by cognition), decisions can be guided by impulsive processing (driven by anticipation of emotional reward and punishment). Reflective and impulsive processing may interact during decision making, affecting the evaluation of available options, as both processes are affected by feedback. Decision-making processes are furthermore modulated by individual attributes (e.g., age), and external influences (e.g., stressors). Accordingly, we suggest a revised model of decision making under objective risk conditions.

Abstract:Both depressive and anxiety disorders have been associated with excessive risk avoidant behaviors, which are considered an important contributor to the maintenance and recurrence of these disorders. However, given the high comorbidity between the two disorders, their independent association with risk preference remains unclear. Furthermore, due to the involvement of multiple cognitive computational factors in the decision-making tasks employed so far, the precise underlying mechanisms of risk preference are unknown. In the present study, we set out to investigate the common versus unique cognitive computational mechanisms of risk preference in depression and anxiety using a reward-based decision-making task and computational modeling based on economic theories. Specifically, in model-based analysis, we decomposed risk preference into utility sensitivity (a power function) and probability weighting (the one-parameter Prelec weighting function). Multiple linear regression incorporating depression (BDI-II) and anxiety (STAI state anxiety) simultaneously indicated that only depression was associated with one such risk preference parameter, probability weighting. As the symptoms of depression increased, subjects’ tendency to overweight small probabilities and underweight large probabilities decreased. Neither depression nor anxiety was associated with utility sensitivity. These associations remained even after controlling covariates or excluding anxiety-relevant items from the depression scale. To our knowledge, this is the first study to assess risk preference due to a concave utility function and nonlinear probability weighting separately for depression and anxiety using computational modeling. Our results provide a mechanistic account of risk avoidance and may improve our understanding of decision-making deficits in depression and anxiety.

Abstract:Background: Adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is often associated with risky decision-making behavior. However, current research studies are often limited by the ability to adequately reflect daily behavior in a laboratory setting. Over the lifespan impairments in cognitive functions appear to improve, whereas affective functions become more severe. We assume that risk behavior in ADHD arises predominantly from deficits in affective processes. This study will therefore aim to investigate whether a dysfunction in affective pathways causes an abnormal risky decision-making (DM) behavior in adult ADHD. Methods: Twenty-eight participants with ADHD and twenty-eight healthy controls completed a battery of questionnaires regarding clinical symptoms, self-assessment of behavior and emotional competence. Furthermore, skin conductance responses were measured during the performance in a modified version of the Balloon Analogue Risk Task. A linear mixed-effects model analysis was used to analyze emotional arousal prior to a decision and after feedback display. Results: Results showed higher emotional arousal in ADHD participants before decision-making (β = −0.12, SE = 0.05, t = −2.63, p < 0.001) and after feedback display (β = −0.14, SE = 0.05, t = −2.66, p = 0.008). Although risky behavior was greater in HC than in ADHD, we found a significant interaction effect of group and anticipatory skin conductance responses regarding the response behavior (β = 107.17, SE = 41.91, t = 2.56, p = 0.011). Post hoc analyses revealed a positive correlation between anticipatory skin conductance responses and reaction time in HC, whereas this correlation was negative in ADHD. Self-assessment results were in line with the objective measurements. Conclusion: We found altered changes in physiological activity during a risky decision-making task. The results confirm the assumption of an aberrant relationship between bodily response and risky behavior in adult ADHD. However, further research is needed with respect to age and gender when considering physiological activities.
