Abstract:The present study investigated the allocation of spatial attention using steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs). The SSVEP is elicited in visual cortical areas by a repetitive flicker having the same fundamental frequency as the driving stimulus. Two flickers were applied with the letter stream presented in the center of the monitor and the distractor presented on either the left or right side of the target. Participants were instructed to detect the target letter in the letter stream. The distance of the two flickers was manipulated. The results show that the amplitudes of the SSVEPs elicited by the distractor were enhanced when it was in the closest position and suppressed when it was at a farther distance. But the amplitudes rebounded at the farthest distance. Meanwhile, the SSVEP elicited by the target flicker remained stable independent of the distance of the distractor. Thus, the present study indicates that focused attention involves neural suppression surrounding the classic “spotlight”, and the SSVEP paradigms open new avenues for studying the attentional suppression mechanism.

Abstract:Attending to a relevant item in a visual display is thought to require not only selective attention to this item, but also active inhibition of surrounding distractor items. As a consequence of this spatial inhibition, selection of a relevant item in a previous distractor location is slowed (i.e., the spatial inhibition effect). The goal of this study is to identify brain regions that are involved in this spatial inhibition effect using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Subjects had to select a target from a display which also included a distractor, while that target was presented in either a new location (control) or in a location previously occupied by a distractor (spatial inhibition). A region of interest analysis revealed decreased activation in the superior parietal lobe (SPL), but increased activation in the motor areas (supplementary motor area, putamen) when the target was presented in a previously inhibited compared to a new location. We take these results to suggest that presenting a target in a previously inhibited location negatively biases the selection of that target in favor of an accompanying distractor. This may result in an initially more efficient selection process, resulting in lower activation in the SPL. Counteracting this perceptual bias possibly requires additional motor activation. This study provides evidence for the notion that to make selection more efficient, prior information concerning an item is used. When this prior information conflicts with the current stimulus demands, compensatory motor actions are taken to correct this perceptual bias.
Understanding the PD and the N2pc: Modeling the Neural Mechanisms Underlying Spatial Attention Shifts

Abstract:When spatial attention is directed by a target towards one side of the visual field, electrodes on the scalp record an asymmetrical electrophysiological potential over parietal cortex called the N2pc. This EEG component has recently been shown to reflect the engagement of attention at a location, but not sustained attentional deployment (Tan & Wyble, In Press). A computational model has interpreted this component as the attentional system “locking-on” to the location of a target (Tan & Wyble, In Press). The Pd is another lateralized component, thought to reflect suppression of distracting information. In contrast to this interpretation, we have run an EEG experiment using four RSVP streams which reveals a Pd elicited by two simultaneously presented targets, when the targets are separated by one degree of visual angle, but not when separated by four degrees. To provide a neural intuition for the mechanisms underlying the Pd component, we have revised our previous neurocomputational model of attentional dynamics so that it simulates both the N2pc and the Pd as suggested by a variety of experimental findings. The new model simulates the Pd as a laterally asymmetric imbalance in the inhibition of attentional control neurons in posterior parietal cortex. This imbalance can have multiple causes, which explains how the Pd is elicited both with and without distractors. Critical to this account is strategic regulation of the attentional focus, such that it is tighter when stimuli are spatially proximal, whether they are targets or distractors. Furthermore, since the Pd can be elicited by distractors without a leading N2pc, the model includes a reactive form of inhibition that can, in some cases, suppress distracting information before it can elicit an attentional response. Spatial Heterogeneity for Attentional Capture Susceptibility

Abstract:Recent studies have shown spatial heterogeneity in the perception of multiple feature dimensions (Afraz, Pashkam, & Cavanagh, 2010), and also stable individual biases in object localization (Kosovicheva & Whitney, 2017). Considering the role of selective attention in visual perception (Boynton, 2005; Luck & Ford, 1998), we hypothesized that attentional capture would also exhibit spatial heterogeneity across display locations. In 3 experiments, we used modified versions of the additional singleton paradigm (Theeuwes, 1991, 1992) to test this hypothesis. In Experiment 1, distractors were defined on the color dimension. We tuned the relative saliency of the only color singleton into 5 levels using a linear interpolation method. A vertical segment or a horizontal segment was contained within the target form singleton, which appeared equally-often at each of the eight locations. After the location of the target was set, the color distractor appeared equally-often at the other seven locations. In Experiment 2 and 3, distractors were defined on the orientation and size dimension respectively. The five distractor saliency conditions were specified by the relative inclination of the line segment contained within one of the non-target stimuli in Experiment 2, and by the relative size of one of the non-target stimuli in Experiment 3. The results showed a unique spatial distractibility pattern for each participant, with RT (reaction time) at some display locations demonstrating significant differences between distractor-present and distractor-absent conditions while some not. The stability and distinctiveness of spatial heterogeneity for attentional capture susceptibility for each participant were demonstrated by the high within-individual effect size correlation between 2 rounds and the low between-individual effect size correlation across display locations. These findings suggest that stimuli displayed at some spatial locations seem to be intrinsically easier to capture attention, which offers further insights for understanding the relationship between visual attention and perception.
Identifying spatial effects in a lateralized duration estimation task

Abstract:Spatial influences may be introduced to an experimental task by manipulations performed on the stimulus or the response or by virtue of the type of stimuli under study. Identification of spatial influences is especially pertinent in investigations of laterality, as isolation of processing to one hemisphere may inadvertently introduce spatial confounds. Because, however, space is not a relevant task feature, it may not always be obvious that it should be taken into consideration. Failure to anticipate these spatial influences can affect the conclusions drawn from results. The current work examines potential spatial influences in an experimental paradigm previously used to investigate perceptual asymmetries for duration estimation in which both stimulus presentation and response selection were lateralized. Potential spatial influences (including the spatial-temporal association of response codes - STEARC, spatial attention, and the Simon effect) are identified and systematically tested over 5 experiments. Results suggest that previously observed perceptual asymmetries in this experimental paradigm may be the result of a spatial confound, specifically, that of the Simon effect. Using vertical response options with the lateral stimulus presentation, however, mitigated the spatial influence. Altogether, the current work demonstrates the importance of carefully considering potential spatial confounds prior to commencement of laterality studies.
Two spatially separated attention systems in the visual field: evidence from inhibition of return

Abstract:It has been demonstrated that the human visual field shows some functional inhomogeneities, in particular when the central and perifoveal regions are compared to the more peripheral regions. The present study examined this inhomogeneity by examining the effect of stimulus eccentricity on inhibition of return (IOR), a phenomenon that biases our attention towards novel locations against returning it back to previously attended locations. Eighteen subjects were examined in a visual detection task, in which a target appeared randomly following a nonpredictive spatial cue in the visual field. The eccentricities of the cues and targets were systematically manipulated from 5° to 30° with 5° increments. Results showed that response times to targets that appeared at cued locations were significantly slower than those at uncued locations for all stimulus eccentricities, demonstrating the IOR effects. However, response times at cued locations increased significantly when stimulus eccentricity shifted from 15° to 20°, leading to a much stronger IOR effect at more peripheral regions compared to central and perifoveal regions, indicating a functional dissociation between these two regions of the visual field. Possible neural mechanisms underlying this dissociation are discussed, and two attention systems modulating the two functional regions of the visual field are put forward to best account the present finding implicating in particular midbrain mechanism.

Abstract:Stimuli that appear abruptly in the visual field or differ from the surrounding stimuli based on a given visual feature can capture attention and interfere with the visual search process if they are not targets. When both types of distractors appear with higher likelihood at a given location, observers can learn to reduce their impact (distractor-location effect). In the case of feature-singleton distractors, this can imply a cost for processing targets that appear at locations associated with a high distractor probability (target-location effect). This has been proposed as evidence that distractor interference originates in the competition between distractors and targets within an attentional map, whose inputs can be modified by experience. In this study, we conduct a series of experiments that confirmed previous finding related to feature-singleton distractors, but consistently showed that learning to predict the spatial occurrence of luminance transients induces a distractor-location effect in the absence of a target-location effect. Combining this finding with the fact that interference by luminance transients were larger when distractors were far from the target position, we suggest that different mechanisms are responsible for the reduction of distractor interference in the case of color singletons and luminance transients.

Abstract:Studies have explored how human spatial attention appears allocated in three-dimensional (3D) space. It has been demonstrated that target distance from the viewer can modulate performance in target detection and localization tasks: reaction times are shorter when targets appear nearer to the observer compared to farther distances (i.e., near advantage). Times have reached to quantitatively analyze this literature. In the current meta-analysis, 29 studies (n = 1260 participants) examined target detection and localization across 3-D space. Moderator analyses included: detection vs localization tasks, spatial cueing vs uncued tasks, control of retinal size across depth, central vs peripheral targets, real-space vs stereoscopic vs monocular depth environments, and inclusion of in-trial motion. The analyses revealed a near advantage for spatial attention that was affected by the moderating variables of controlling for retinal size across depth, the use of spatial cueing tasks, and the inclusion of in-trial motion. Overall, these results provide an up-to-date quantification of the effect of depth and provide insight into methodological differences in evaluating spatial attention.
Handling distractor interference in mixed and fixed search

Abstract:When searching for a target, humans can reduce interference from a colour distractor by using different strategies, such as down-weighting the distractor dimension or the most likely distractor location. Less clear is how the heterogeneity among the nontarget features, and the similarity of target and distractor modulate distractor interference and thereby distractor location learning. In three tasks, we examined this question by analyzing target reports and selection errors. In the mixed-feature task, participants searched for a singleton shape among homogeneously shaped nontargets, forcing participants to use singleton-detection mode. In two fixed-feature tasks, participants needed feature-search mode to find the target among heterogeneously shaped nontargets, which were either gray (gray fixed-feature task) or coloured (colour fixed-feature task). As expected, the results in the mixed-feature task showed evidence for distractor interference and distractor location learning with suppression of the high-probability location below a baseline level. In the fixed-feature tasks, the results differed: We observed distractor interference in the gray fixed-feature task, but a slight distractor-presence benefit in the colour fixed-feature task, possibly indicating up-weighting of the target on the featural level. Distractor location learning occurred in the first session of the colour fixed-feature task, but results in the gray fixed-feature task indicate that the participants relied on other strategies to handle distraction. Interestingly, we found overnight learning between sessions in all three tasks, which was more pronounced in the fixed-feature tasks. These results indicate that participants can flexibly adjust their attentional strategy based on the nontarget features to reduce distractor interference.

Abstract:Visual spatial attention is typically thought to have a facilitatory effect on processing that monotonically decreases with the distance from the center of attention (Posner, 1980). Some studies suggest that the distribution of attention across space is nonmonotonic, with suppression around the target object (Cutzu & Tsotsos, 2003; Müller et al., 2005). We show in two flanker-task experiments that discrepancies in past work can be unified by a surround inhibition account in which the shape of the attentional distribution is determined by individual differences in selective attention. The distance from the target at which flanker interference was locally suppressed differed greatly among participants and correlated negatively with working memory capacity. The results suggest that attentional control modulates the breadth of the attentional distribution, constrained by limited cognitive capacity, to enhance target identification. Effects of involuntary and voluntary attention on critical spacing of visual crowding

Abstract:Visual spatial attention can be allocated in two distinct ways: one that is voluntarily directed to behaviorally relevant locations in the world, and one that is involuntarily captured by salient external stimuli. Precueing spatial attention has been shown to improve perceptual performance on a number of visual tasks. However, the effects of spatial attention on visual crowding, defined as the reduction in the ability to identify target objects in clutter, are far less clear. In this study, we used an anticueing paradigm to separately measure the effects of involuntary and voluntary spatial attention on a crowding task. Each trial began with a brief peripheral cue that predicted that the crowded target would appear on the opposite side of the screen 80% of the time and on the same side of the screen 20% of the time. Subjects performed an orientation discrimination task on a target Gabor patch that was flanked by other similar Gabor patches with independent random orientations. For trials with a short stimulus onset asynchrony between cue and target, involuntary capture of attention led to faster response times and smaller critical spacing when the target appeared on the cue side. For trials with a long stimulus onset asynchrony, voluntary allocation of attention led to faster reaction times but no significant effect on critical spacing when the target appeared on the opposite side to the cue. We additionally found that the magnitudes of these cueing effects of involuntary and voluntary attention were not strongly correlated across subjects for either reaction time or critical spacing.

Abstract:Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, Ahead of Print. Reallocating object-based attention across the visual field meridians is significantly faster horizontally than vertically (termed the shift direction anisotropy; SDA), implicating the meridians in reorienting object-based attention. Here, we tested the modulatory role of the meridians in the emergence of the SDA by manipulating meridian local feature contrast. Considering the notion of separate pools of attentional resources in each cortical hemisphere, we hypothesised that manipulating the horizontal meridian would selectively modulate the SDA. In four experiments, participants were presented with an "L"-shaped object and detected a target that appeared at either a cued location or at one of two equidistant non-cued locations at the far end of the horizontal or vertical object arm. Meridian local feature contrast was manipulated with perceptually strong enhancements (visible lines and colour contrast borders) and perceptually weak enhancements (illusory borders from line texture patterns and inducers). Weak enhancements of the meridians did not significantly modulate SDA magnitude; however, during perceptually strong enhancements of the horizontal meridian, the SDA was significantly reduced compared with both vertical meridian enhancement and no-enhancement conditions. Moreover, horizontal and vertical shift RTs were statistically equivalent when the horizontal meridian was enhanced with a visible line, our strongest manipulation, indicating the SDA was eliminated. These results suggest that the SDA emerges due to reallocating object-based attention across the horizontal meridian. We interpret this finding as evidence in support of the theory by which anatomical segregations of the visual system determine how pools of attentional resources resolve competition between and within cortical hemispheres.

Proactive distractor suppression in early visual cortex

Abstract:Avoiding distraction by salient yet irrelevant stimuli is critical when accomplishing daily tasks. One possible mechanism to accomplish this is by suppressing stimuli that may be distracting such that they no longer compete for attention. While the behavioral benefits of distractor suppression are well-established, its neural underpinnings are not yet fully understood. In an fMRI study, we examined whether and how sensory responses in early visual areas show signs of distractor suppression after incidental learning of spatial statistical regularities. Participants were exposed to an additional singleton task where, unbeknownst to them, one location more frequently contained a salient distractor. We then analyzed whether visual responses in terms of fMRI BOLD were modulated by this distractor predictability. Our findings indicate that implicit spatial priors shape sensory processing even at the earliest stages of cortical visual processing, evident in early visual cortex as a suppression of stimuli at locations which frequently contained distracting information. Notably, while this suppression was spatially (receptive field) specific, it did extend to nearby neutral locations, and occurred regardless of whether the distractor, a nontarget item or the target was presented at this location, suggesting that suppression arises before stimulus identification. Crucially, we observed a similar pattern of spatially specific neural suppression even if search was only anticipated, but no search display was presented. Our results highlight proactive modulations in early visual cortex, where potential distractions are suppressed preemptively, before stimulus onset, based on learned expectations. Combined, our study underscores how the brain leverages implicitly learned prior knowledge to optimize sensory processing and attention allocation.

Interference of Illusory Contour Perception by a Distractor

Abstract:The visual system is capable of recognizing objects when object information is widely separated in space, as revealed by the Kanizsa-type illusory contours (ICs). Attentional involvement in perception of ICs is an important topic, and the present study examined whether and how the processing of ICs is interfered with by a distractor. Discrimination between thin and short deformations of an illusory circle was investigated in the absence or presence of a central dynamic patch, with difficulty of discrimination varied in three levels (easy, medium, and hard). Reaction time (RT) was significantly shorter in the absence compared to the presence of the distractor in the easy and medium conditions. Correct rate (CR) was significantly higher in the absence compared to the presence of the distractor in the easy condition, and the magnitude of the difference between CRs of distracted and non-distracted responses significantly reduced as task difficulty increased. These results suggested that perception of ICs is more likely to be vulnerable to distraction when more attentional resources remain available. The present finding supports that attention is engaged in perception of ICs and that distraction of IC processing is associated with perceptual load.

Probing the Neural Mechanisms for Distractor Filtering and Their History-Contingent Modulation by Means of TMS

Abstract:In visual search, the presence of a salient, yet task-irrelevant, distractor in the stimulus array interferes with target selection and slows down performance. Neuroimaging data point to a key role of the frontoparietal dorsal attention network in dealing with visual distractors; however, the respective roles of different nodes within the network and their hemispheric specialization are still unresolved. Here, we used transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to evaluate the causal role of two key regions of the dorsal attention network in resisting attentional capture by a salient singleton distractor: the frontal eye field (FEF) and the cortex within the intraparietal sulcus (IPS). The task of the participants (male/female human volunteers) was to discriminate the pointing direction of a target arrow while ignoring a task-irrelevant salient distractor. Immediately after stimulus onset, triple-pulse 10 Hz TMS was delivered either to IPS or FEF on either side of the brain. Results indicated that TMS over the right FEF significantly reduced the behavioral cost engendered by the salient distractor relative to left FEF stimulation. No such effect was obtained with stimulation of IPS on either side of brain. Interestingly, this FEF-dependent reduction in distractor interference interacted with the contingent trial history, being maximal when no distractor was present on the previous trial relative to when there was one. Our results provide direct causal evidence that the right FEF houses key mechanisms for distractor filtering, pointing to a pivotal role of the frontal cortex of the right hemisphere in limiting interference from an irrelevant but attention-grabbing stimulus.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Visually conspicuous stimuli attract our attention automatically and interfere with performance by diverting resources away from the main task. Here, we applied transcranial magnetic stimulation over four frontoparietal cortex locations (frontal eye field and intraparietal sulcus in each hemisphere) to identify regions of the dorsal attention network that help limit interference from task-irrelevant, salient distractors. Results indicate that the right FEF participates in distractor-filtering mechanisms that are recruited when a distracting stimulus is encountered. Moreover, right FEF implements adjustments in distraction-filtering mechanisms following recent encounters with distractors. Together, these findings indicate a different hemispheric contribution of the left versus right dorsal frontal cortex to distraction filtering. This study expands our understanding of how our brains select relevant targets in the face of task-irrelevant, salient distractors.
Sustained visual-spatial attention produces costs and benefits in response time and evoked neural activity

Abstract:This study investigated the simple reaction time (RT) and event-related potential (ERP) correlates of biasing attention towards a location in the visual field. RTs and ERPs were recorded to stimuli flashed randomly and with equal probability to the left and right visual hemifields in the three blocked, covert attention conditions: (i) attention divided equally to left and right hemifield locations; (ii) attention biased towards the left location; or (iii) attention biased towards the right location. Attention was biased towards left or right by instructions to the subjects, and responses were required to all stimuli. Relative to the divided attention condition, RTs were significantly faster for targets occurring where more attention was allocated (benefits), and slower to targets where less attention was allocated (costs). The early P1 (100-140 msec) component over the lateral occipital scalp regions showed attentional benefits. There were no amplitude modulations of the occipital N1 (125-180 msec) component with attention. Between 200 and 500 msec latency, a late positive deflection (LPD) showed both attentional costs and benefits. The behavioral findings show that when sufficiently induced to bias attention, human observers demonstrate RT benefits as well as costs. The corresponding P1 benefits suggest that the RT benefits of spatial attention may arise as the result of modulations of visual information processing in the extrastriate visual cortex.

Abstract:The present study demonstrates that incongruent distractor letters at a constant distance from a target letter produce more response competition and negative priming when they share a target’s color than when they have a different color. Moreover, perceptual grouping by means of color, attenuated the effects of spatial proximity. For example, when all items were presented in the same color, near distractors produced more response competition and negative priming than far distractors (Experiment 3A). However, when near distractors were presented in a different color and far distractors were presented in the same color as the target, the response competition × distractor proximity interaction was eliminated and the proximity × negative priming interaction was reversed (Experiment 3B). A final experiment demonstrated that distractors appearing on the same object as a selected target produced comparable amounts of response competition and negative priming whether they were near or far from the target. This suggests that the inhibitory mechanisms of visual attention can be directed to perceptual groups/objects in the environment and not only to unsegmented regions of visual space.
