Abstract:Geological sequestration of CO2 in unminable coal seams is one of the effective ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase coalbed methane production. However, changes in the pore structure after CO2 injection may affect the mechanical properties of the coal reservoir, posing a challenge to the long-term safety of CO2 sequestration. Therefore, a proper understanding of the relationship between pore structure and mechanical properties of coal under CO2 treatment is essential. In this paper, Low-field nuclear magnetic resonance tests were carried out on bituminous coal after sub/super-critical CO2 (Sub-CO2/Sc-CO2) treatment, and uniaxial compression tests were used to analyze the mechanical properties and energy evolution of coal samples. The results demonstrate that the CO2 treatment increased the porosity and proportion of macropores, and the effect of Sc-CO2 treatment on the pore structure was more significant. Compared to the Sub-CO2 treated sample, the uniaxial compressive strength and elastic modulus decreased more in the Sc-CO2 treated sample, which may be related to the extraction capacity of Sc-CO2. Analysis of the energy evolution shows that more energy was converted into dissipated energy in the loading process of Sc-CO2 treated coal samples, which was used to form, expand and connect fractures. Moreover, the correlation between the rate of change in porosity and the rate of change in uniaxial compressive strength was 0.9579, indicating that changes in pore structure were the main cause of the change in the mechanical properties of coal. A conceptual model was proposed to explain the mechanism of the effect of the pore structure on the mechanical properties, and pressure selection during CO2 sequestration was discussed. Therefore, the results of this study are expected to provide references for the long-term safety assessment and injection pressure selection of CO2 sequestration.

Abstract:With the rapid development of Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) technology, it is necessary to explore the feasibility of coal slime as a porous carbon material for CO2 capture. In this paper, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe the morphological characteristics of coal slime samples with different metamorphic degrees, and the pore structure of coal slime was explored by low temperature N2 adsorption and low-pressure CO2 adsorption experiments. The pore distribution characteristics were analyzed, and the adsorption law of different metamorphic degrees were summarized through CO2 isothermal adsorption experiments. The results showed that: The specific surface area (SSA) and pore volume (PV) of the mesopores of the coal slime exhibited a U-shaped distribution with coal rank, and are much smaller than that of its micropores. Micropores less than 2 nm are the main adsorption space of coal slime, its PV accounted for 59%, 60%, 71%, and SSA accounted for 92%, 93%, 95%, obviously, which are dominant at all stages. The linear correlation fitting coefficients R2 between the limiting adsorbed amount a of CO2 and the micropores PV and the SSA were up to 0.830 and 0.887, respectively. The coal slime has good adsorption performance for CO2. Based on the Langmuir model to fit the limit adsorption amount, a-value can reach 41.774 cm3 g-1, 32.072 cm3 g-1, 38.457 cm3 g-1 at 303 K with the increase of Rmax. Studying the impact of coal slime on CO2 adsorption performance provides a theoretical basis for the subsequent preparation of energy storage materials and is of great significance for the safe, efficient and economic capture and sequestration of CO2, to alleviate the serious situation of the environment and realizing the dual-carbon goal.

Abstract:By conducting research on the microscopic mechanisms of CH4 and CO2 adsorption in different rank coals, the CO2-enhanced coal bed methane recovery (CO2-ECBM) technique can be further developed. In this paper, low-pressure N2 adsorption (LPGA-N2), low-pressure CO2 adsorption (LPGA-CO2), isothermal adsorption, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) experiments, and molecular simulations were applied to analyze the mechanisms. The results demonstrated that the pore volume and specific surface area (SSA) of coal showed a U-shaped trend with the increase of metamorphic. The volume and SSA of the micropore were positively correlated with the ultimate adsorption volume, indicating that micropores were the main sites for adsorption. With the increased metamorphic degree, the aliphatic chains and oxygenated functional groups shed, and the aromatic rings polymerized. These changes in chemical functional groups directly affected the adsorption capacity of coal and indirectly affected the adsorption capacity by affecting micropore evolution. Compared with the CH4 molecule, the CO2 molecule had a smaller structure and a stronger intermolecular force, shown as the larger adsorption energy and closer distance to the coal molecule in the molecular simulation. These findings can provide the data and theoretical basis for the CO2-ECBM technique, coal bed methane extraction, and effect evaluation of extraction.

Abstract:Two patients in whom asymptomatic and small hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC) were detected by alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) screening are reported. Both patients were hepatitis B surface antigen-positive. In the first patient, the tumour grew slowly and was resected more than 2 years after a significant elevation in serum AFP levels had been first detected and 13 months after hepatic angiography confirmed the presence of a vascular tumour. In the second patient, a small encapsulated HCC was diagnosed by AFP screening and hepatic imaging. The clinical course in these 2 patients illustrates that small, asymptomatic and encapsulated HCCs do occur in southern African black hepatitis B carriers. Regular screening of patients at risk may be justified.
Effects of CO2 adsorption on molecular structure characteristics of coal: Implications for CO2 geological sequestration

Abstract:With a series of global problems such as greenhouse effect caused by the gradual increase of atmospheric CO2 concentration, CO2 geological storage has become one of the effective measures. To study the influence of the interaction between CO2 and coal on the molecular structure characteristics of coal, three coals of different ranks were selected for CO2 adsorption and were subjected to X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy experiments. The results indicate that with increasing of CO2 pressure: 1) Due to the solubility differences of different minerals, the contents of quartz in the coal samples gradually increases, while the contents of calcite, pyrite and kaolinite decreases; 2) The average number of the aromatic layers gradually decreased indicates that some aromatic layers are destroyed and order degree is lowered in the coal microcrystalline structure, resulting in a gradual increase of the inter-layer spacing between aromatic layers, the stacking of aromatic layers; 3) The concentration of aromatic rings gradually decreases leading to the intermolecular structural defects are obvious and the gradual evolution of the microcrystalline structure into the more disordered crystal structure; 4) The hydroxyl groups are predominated by oxidation reactions in long-flame coal and lean coal, while they are mainly governed by swelling in anthracite; 5) The ratio between aliphatic and total hydrogen atoms (Hal/H), aliphatic structure (I 1) and ‘A’ factor values of the anthracite reveal a slight increase, while the aromaticity 2 (AR2) and degree of condensation 2 (DOC2) values display a decreasing trend. These values of long-flame coal and lean coal only slightly change. The influence of CO2 intrusion on coal properties due to the changes of molecular structure and CO2 trapping mechanisms are discussed. Our research contributes to understand deeply the geological sequestration of CO2 in coal seams and higher CO2 injection pressures should be adopted.

Abstract:<p>A better knowledge about the impact of coal composition and pore structure on gas adsorption is of great significance for coalbed methane exploration and uneconomic coalbed CO<sub>2</sub> storage. Coal is a porous medium with complex organic components, and most pores in coal are nanopores that have a complex geometrical morphology. As a result, it is significantly necessary to investigate the impact of coal composition and pore structure on gas adsorption based on coal 3D nanopore structure. Synchrotron radiation nano‐computed tomography (CT) was applied to acquire 3D coal nanopore structure and synchrotron radiation small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) was used to obtain the pore surface fractal dimension. The coal with higher pore surface fractal dimension presents higher Langmuir volume. Based on the 3D nanopore structure acquired by synchrotron radiation nano‐CT, gas adsorption capacity was characterized by the adsorbed gas amount on unit pore surface area. It was found that gas adsorption capacity depends on the coal composition. There is a negative correlation between gas adsorption capacity and ash content and oxygen‐containing groups, and a positive correlation between gas adsorption capacity and vitrinite contents. Hysteresis between desorption and adsorption isotherms is dependent upon the ratio of throat number to pore number, and the hysteresis becomes more significant when the ratio is larger. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.</p>

Abstract:Physicochemical structure characteristics and its effects on the heat of gas adsorption are the foundation for coalbed methane (CBM) development. Herein, this paper selected different rank coals before and after acid treatments to analyze the relationship among nanopore structure, chemical functional groups and the heat of gas adsorption through low-temperature N2 adsorption, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and calorimetric tests. This enabled us to explore the effect of acid solvents on nanopore structure and functional groups, and finally reveal a coupling mechanism between physicochemical structure and gas adsorption. Results showed that the specific surface area of Brunauer-Emmett-Teller model (BET-SSA) and pore volume of Barret-Joyner-Halenda model (BJH-PV) decrease first and subsequently increase with increasing coal evolution before and after acid treatments. However, both pore structure parameters and fractal dimension show a decrease or an increase at different degrees under pore expansion and increase effects. On the other hand, after acid treatments, aliphatic structures evidently decrease and aromatic structures relatively increase. For oxygen-containing functional groups affected by ester hydrolysis and Fourier reaction, more carboxyl and hydroxyl groups appear but ether groups reduce. This suggests that acid treatment is actually accompanied by more physicochemical changes. Then, according to its physicochemical response, less aliphatic structures and more aromatic structures significantly contribute to appear more micropores. However, a non-significant effect of aliphatic structure on gas adsorption is observed, while micropores, aromatic structure and oxygen-containing groups give a positive effect on gas adsorption.

Abstract:Utilizing calcium-based adsorbents for CO2 adsorption through cyclic calcination/carbonization is one of the most cost-effective methods for carbon emission reduction. In order to improve the cycle stability of the adsorbents and the capture efficiency of CO2, this study used industrial solid waste coal fly ash for the hydration treatment of calcium-based adsorbent to explore the variations in the cyclic adsorption performance of the adsorbent under different doping ratios and hydration conditions. By means of various characterization techniques, the microscopic mechanism for improving the performance of the modified adsorbent was analyzed from the perspectives of chemical composition, physical structure, and surface functional groups of the adsorbents. The results demonstrated that the modification of coal fly ash could significantly enhance the carbonation performance and cycle stability of the adsorbent in multiple CO2 capture processes. The modified material doped with 5% coal fly ash had the highest total CO2 adsorption capacity, which increased by 13.7% compared to before modification. Additionally, the modified material doped with 10% coal fly ash exhibited the strongest cyclic adsorption capacity, which was 14.0% higher than that before modification, and the adsorption attenuation rate decreased by 32.2%. The characterization results showed that the reaction between calcium oxide and coal fly ash formed CaSiO3 and Ca12Al14O33 during the modification process, which was the primary reason for the improvement in the CO2 capture performance of the modified materials. This study provided a new perspective on the resource utilization of solid waste fly ash and efficient CO2 capture.

Abstract:Coal gasification slag is a kind of solid waste that exhibits suboptimal resource utilization and contributes to environmental pollution. Flotation is a common method of sorting coal gasification fine slag. However, the adverse influence of the well-developed pores structure of residual carbon on wettability and flotation efficiency is not adequately addressed in the literature. In this research, the adsorption characteristics of water molecules in the residual carbon model with different pore structures were investigated by Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulation. We employed molecular dynamics simulations and mathematical models to investigate the mechanism of pore water movement. Additionally, the influence of pore structure on the flotation effect of coal gasification fine slag was explored for molecular dynamics simulations and flotation experiments. The results indicated that water molecules were adsorbed and aggregated in the residual carbon pores in the form of clusters. The cluster size decreased as the porosity decreased. Moreover, the same pore model showed an equivalent adsorption of water molecules. The binding effect of residual carbon on water molecules was stronger for smaller pore sizes. However, the simulation and experimental findings demonstrated that the more developed the pore structure of coal gasification fine slag, the lower its flotation efficiency. Finally, various methods of strengthening the flotation of coal gasification fine slag are theoretically verified. The findings of this research elucidate the underlying microscopic mechanism responsible for the adsorption of water molecules by residual carbon pores. Moreover, we explicate the principle of weakening the pore wetting effect and lay a theoretical foundation for developing advanced flotation techniques for coal gasification fine slag. It provides some theoretical guidance and technical support for realizing high-value utilization of coal gasification slag with specific environmental and resource benefits.

Abstract:Liquid CO2 is a non-polar fluid, and the injection of CO2 fluid into a coal seam causes a strong water–rock interaction between the inorganic minerals and organic matter in the coal and acidic fluid. The minerals in the coal are thereby corroded and precipitated to different degrees, and the organic matter is dissolved and extracted, which further changes the physical and chemical properties of the coal and rock. Three kinds of coal samples with different metamorphic degrees were selected as the research objects, and the research methods of theoretical analysis and experimental testing were used to carry out the related research on the modification of coal by liquid CO2 extraction and dissolution. After the three kinds of coal samples were extracted by liquid CO2, the pore specific surface area decreased and the CO2 adsorption decreased with the increase in extraction pressure. The reduction in anthracite adsorption was greater than that of bituminous coal and lignite; after being corroded by different CO2 pressures, the adsorption capacity of bituminous coal gradually increased with the increase in corrosion pressure, and the increase in adsorption capacity of bituminous coal was larger than that of anthracite and lignite. After corrosion, bituminous coal was suitable for CO2 geological storage.

Abstract:The technique of thermal stimulation for coalbed methane extraction is considered an important approach for increasing coalbed methane production capacity in the future. This study focuses on the impact of the thermal evolution of pore structure in coal on gas adsorption characteristics. The low-pressure CO2 and N2 physical adsorption data were analyzed using classical thermodynamic methods and density functional theory. The results showed a decrease in pore volume and an increase in average pore size. The fractal dimensions obtained from the Frenkel-Halsey-Hill and Sierpinski fractal models indicate that the micro-scale spatial structure of coal becomes simpler, and the surface becomes smoother. The high-pressure volumetric method was employed to determine the gas adsorption parameters of the coal, and a comparison was made between the calculated gas adsorption parameters based on the micro-pore structure parameters of the coal samples. It was found that the variation pattern of micro-pores in the coal samples correlated highly with the methane adsorption capacity. The decrease in adsorption capacity increases the proportion of free-phase methane, which helps enhance the early-stage methane extraction rate. Improving gas migration pathways avoids the limitation imposed by diffusion in the later stages of coalbed methane extraction.

Abstract:To address the solid waste challenges associated with coal gasification fine ash, this study conducted a low-temperature alkali fusion de-ashing treatment to transform coal gasification fine ash into mineral-carbon adsorbent. The preparation process was simplified without grinding, carbonization and high-temperature (500-800 °C) activation treatment. The results demonstrate a positive linear correlation between the ash removal rate of the samples (measured during the preparation process, i.e., low-temperature alkaline fusion treatment of coal gasification fine ash) and their maximum equilibrium adsorption capacity for methylene blue. For the samples with an ash removal rate of 95.71 %, which exhibit a maximum adsorption capacity of 161.36 mg/g for methylene blue. The adsorption behavior of methylene blue on mineral-carbon adsorbent was a monolayer adsorption on the surface of homogeneous medium, involving both physical and chemical adsorption. The main adsorb rate-controlling steps for the samples with ash removal rates of 27.91-59.33 % and 95.71 % were the intra particle diffusion process and the liquid film diffusion process, respectively. The adsorption mechanism of methylene blue on the surface of mineral-carbon adsorbent involved electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding. The aforementioned results demonstrated the potential of coal gasification fine ash as an adsorbent material, providing new options for promoting the resource utilization and high-value applications of coal gasification fine ash.

Abstract:The mechanism of ash formation during coal gasification is very important for the safety and stability of gasifier operation. This study comparatively investigated the ash formation behaviors during the gasification of coal water slurry and dry pulverized coal. Shenmu coal was gasified in a CO2 atmosphere at 900 degrees C using a fixed-bed reactor to prepare chars and ashes. Computer-controlled scanning electron microscopy was employed to characterize the compositions and particle sizes of minerals in the raw coal, coal water slurry gasification ash, and dry pulverized coal gasification ash. Morphological characteristics reveal that, during gasification, coal water slurry gasification char exhibits obvious agglomeration compared to the dry pulverized coal gasification char. The changes of mineral compositions indicate that, during both coal water slurry and dry pulverized coal gasification, minerals follow nearly identical transformation pathways, but the degrees of transformation are different. The influence of char agglomeration on heat transfer may be the reason for the less transformation of K Al-silicate and kaolinite during the coal water slurry gasification. Furthermore, in comparison to dry pulverized coal gasification, more Ca in calcite and S in pyrite transfer into gypsum during the coal water slurry gasification. The results from thermodynamic equilibrium calculations indirectly suggest that this may be attributed to the limited internal diffusion of CO2 within coal water slurry gasification char resulting from char agglomeration during gasification. Overall particle size distributions of minerals in raw coal, coal water slurry gasification ash, and dry pulverized coal gasification ash demonstrate that the degrees of mineral fragmentation are almost consistent during both coal water slurry and dry pulverized coal gasification. However, differences in the degrees of mineral transformation led to different particle size distributions of various minerals between coal water slurry gasification ash and dry pulverized coal gasification ash. This study mainly focuses on the influence of water in coal water slurry on ash formation, and it has not considered the influence of other factors, such as ash content, hydrophilicity, caking property, and gasification reactivity of coal, which need further research to explore.

Abstract:There are a large number of abandoned coalmines in China, and most of them are located around major coal-fired power stations, which are the largest emission sources of carbon dioxide (CO2). Considering the injection of CO2 into abandoned coalmines, which are usually in the flooded condition, it is necessary to investigate the effect of CO2-water-coal interaction on minerals and pore structures at different pressures, temperatures and times. It reveals that the CO2-water-coal interaction can significantly improve the solubility of Ca, S, Mg, K, Si, Al, Fe and Na. By comparing the mineral content and pore structure before and after CO2-water-coal interaction, quartz and kaolinite were found to be the main secondary minerals, which increased in all samples. The structures of micropores and mesopores in the range of 1.5-8 nm were changed obviously. Specific surface areas and pore volumes first increased and then decreased with pressure and time, while both increased with temperature. By using the Frenkel-Halsey-Hill model, the fractal dimensions of all samples were analyzed based on D-s1 and D-s2, which reflected the complexities of the pore surface and pore volume, respectively. The results show that fractal dimensions had very weak positive correlations with the carbon content. D-s1 had a positive correlation with the quartz and kaolinite contents, while Ds2 had a negative correlation with the quartz and kaolinite contents. Abstract:Geological carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestration in deep coal beds is a potential technique for enhancing coal bed methane recovery. Since porosity and connectivity between pores or fractures are the most important parameters affecting mineral dissolution and percolation of coal bed methane, it is crucial to understand the pore structure changes in coal induced by CO2 injection. To investigate the role that mineral reactions play in coal pore structure changes, three groups of CO2-H2O-coal interaction experiments were carried out in parallel at 40 °C and 5 MPa. Based on X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, the mineral compositions of coal samples after interaction exhibit significant changes, notably a marked decrease in calcite and dolomite. The pore type, pore size distribution, effective porosity, and spatial configuration of coal samples before and after interaction were studied through combined low-temperature N2 adsorption and desorption (LTNAD), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), and X-ray computed tomography scanning (CT). The results show that new types of pores were formed and pore shapes became more complex due to mineral reactions. The number of macropores and fractures increased significantly, with the average pore diameter also increasing. Overall, the experiments show that CO2-H2O-coal interaction plays a positive role in pore structure modification, which can effectively enhance the coal bed methane recovery.

Abstract:Microscopic pores significantly impact the coalbed methane (CBM) storage, hence gas energy recovery and gas-related problems mitigation. However, the quantitative relationship between microscopic pore properties and CBM storage dictated by gas adsorption capacity remains unclear. In this study, high-pressure isothermal gas adsorption experiments were conducted using differently ranked coal samples to investigate gas adsorption characteristics. High-pressure mercury injection (HPMI), low-pressure nitrogen adsorption (LPGA-N 2 ), low-pressure carbon dioxide adsorption (LPGA-CO 2 ) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) tests were employed for full-scale microscopic pore structure characterization. Considering potential energy induced by CH 4 molecules and microscopic pore wall interaction, an improved method was proposed to quantitatively characterize gas adsorption capacity and obtain CH 4 occurrence characteristics for different-scale pores. The results show that microscopic properties of differently ranked coal samples vary remarkably with evident heterogeneity. The micropore specific surface area (SSA) is 79.396–232.253 m 2 /g, accounting for 90.03%–99.45% of the total specific surface area (TSSA). The adsorption capacities of differently ranked coal samples present significant differences and range between 13.38 and 20.08 cc/g, and shows an asymmetric U-shaped trend as coal metamorphism deepens. Based on microscopic pore properties, the Langmuir volume theoretically calculated using the new method ranges between 12.29 and 20.85 cc/g. The calculated results agree well with experimental results with a relative error of less than 10%, proving that this theoretical model can predict gas adsorption capacity with sufficient confidence.

Abstract:Coal gasification fine slag is a kind of solid waste with high carbon content produced in the process of coal gasification. There is an urgent need to analyze the various pore sizes and their characteristics, and then design a proper method for dewatering gasification fine slag. In this study the low-temperature adsorption analysis, high-pressure injection analysis (mercury porosimetry) as well as the two types of filter press are used to first analyze the gasification slag pore characteristics and then dewatering efficiency, respectively. Results show that the full pore size combined analysis method portray that the pore size increases rapidly between 100 ~ 2000 nm, which is significantly different and larger than the pore size at low-temperature nitrogen adsorption analysis (4.37 nm). As a result, the combined pore size method of high-pressure mercury injection and low-temperature nitrogen adsorption predicts more precise results. Micropores, transition pores, mesopores, and macropores account for 6.62%, 7.84%, 18.46%, and 67.08% of the total. A filter press with a diaphragm plate and frame is an efficient dewatering device for fine coal gasification slag. The final filter cake moisture is 50.87%, which is significantly lower than the vacuum belt filter with 69.22%. A new option for coal gasification fine slag dewatering equipment is the ultra high-pressure filter press; the moisture content of filter cake obtained is 44.70%, and the dewatering effect is outstanding. This study will help to better design the dehydration methods of the wet slags. Ultimately, it will help recycling the water, reducing the ash quantity as well as the cost of the ash landfill.

Abstract:Coal seam CO 2 sequestration is an important option to address global warming. A better knowledge on coal pore structure evolution during gas adsorption can provide guidance for coal seams CO 2 sequestration. However, few investigations on the pore structure evolution differences between the deep and shallow coal were conducted during gas adsorption. In this study, based on the real-time synchrotron radiation small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) observation, the average pore diameter and pore surface fractal dimension evolution differences between deep and shallow coal were investigated from the aspects of coal compositions and stress history. Two types of coal deformation (inner-swelling and outer-swelling) coexist during gas adsorption. Coal compositions have significant impact on the dominance of deformation type. The dominance of inner-swelling in deep coal is induced by the higher ash contents, and there is the decrease of average pore diameter during gas adsorption. The impact of stress-history (burial depth) on adsorption-induced deformation is more prominent than that of gas adsorption capacity. In deep coal, the surface fractal dimension evolution presents a negative correlation with the evolution of pore diameters. In shallow coal, the surface fractal dimension evolution presents a Langmuir-type correlation with the adsorption time.

Abstract:Characteristics of supercritical CO2 adsorption/desorption on coals are the key scientific problems for CO2 geological sequestration in deep coal seams. The differences in pore structures of tectonically deformed coals will affect their adsorption/desorption characteristics. Isothermal adsorption/desorption experiments of CO2 on five medium rank coal samples with different tectonic deformations were carried out at 45℃ and 0–16 MPa. Characteristics of adsorption/desorption, including isotherm, adsorption extremes, desorption deviation and negative adsorption, were investigated. Based on mercury intrusion porosimetry, low temperature N2 and CO2 adsorption experiments, pore structure and fractal characteristics were analyzed. Finally, effects of pore structure on characteristics of adsorption/desorption and adsorption mechanism were investigated. Results show that CO2 adsorption and desorption isotherms shows the “two-stage” variation with multiple extremes and negative adsorption. The adsorption peak values at low pressure stage are mainly affected by pore specific surface area of transition pores, while the adsorption capacity at high pressure stage is mainly controlled by the development of ultra-micropores, especially for ductile deformed coals. As the coal deforms from weak to strong, the desorption deviation shows the change trend of “premature desorption - reversible desorption - premature desorption”, which is controlled by fractal characteristics of pores (D 1 and D 3). Extraction of small organic molecules by supercritical CO2 has been considered as a possible cause for increase in density of bulk free phase and negative adsorption.

Abstract:CO2 intrusion has a crucial effect on the pore structure of mineral-bearing coal. In this study, we selected long flame coal, lean coal, and anthracite after CO2 adsorption at different pressures and tested the coal samples using X-ray diffraction, mercury intrusion porosimetry, and N2 (77 K) adsorption methods. The tests were conducted to determine the variations in mineral content, pore structure, and fractal characteristics. The results showed that supercritical CO2 had a greater ability to dissolve minerals in coal than that of subcritical CO2. Although the total pore volume and BET specific surface area gradually increased with the increase in CO2 intrusion pressure in coal, the transformation of different pores and partial new pores caused by the dissolution of minerals and the adsorption swelling of coal matrix caused the micro-macropores in the three coal samples to exhibit different trends. The pore surface roughness and pore structure complexity of seepage pore in the long-flame coal after CO2 adsorption increased while those of the lean coal and anthracite decreased. Meanwhile, CO2 intrusion caused the surface of the adsorption pore in coal to become smooth, and the pore structure was more regular, except for the lean coal. A conceptual model of the mineral-bearing coal was developed to describe the relationship between the mineral composition and pore structure induced by CO2 intrusion. These findings help to understand the transformation effect of CO2 on coal seams. Thus, a higher CO2 injection pressure should be used to obtain a larger injection volume and shorter injection time during CO2 storage implementation.
