Abstract:We developed and implemented a method-independent, fully numerical, finite difference approach to calculating nuclear magnetic resonance shieldings, using gauge-including atomic orbitals. The resulting capability can be used to explore non-standard methods, given only the energy as a function of finite-applied magnetic fields and nuclear spins. For example, standard second-order Møller-Plesset theory (MP2) has well-known efficacy for 1H and 13C shieldings and known limitations for other nuclei such as 15N and 17O. It is, therefore, interesting to seek methods that offer good accuracy for 15N and 17O shieldings without greatly increased compute costs, as well as exploring whether such methods can further improve 1H and 13C shieldings. Using a small molecule test set of 28 species, we assessed two alternatives: κ regularized MP2 (κ-MP2), which provides energy-dependent damping of large amplitudes, and MP2.X, which includes a variable fraction, X, of third-order correlation (MP3). The aug-cc-pVTZ basis was used, and coupled cluster with singles and doubles and perturbative triples [CCSD(T)] results were taken as reference values. Our κ-MP2 results reveal significant improvements over MP2 for 13C and 15N, with the optimal κ value being element-specific. κ-MP2 with κ = 2 offers a 30% rms error reduction over MP2. For 15N, κ-MP2 with κ = 1.1 provides a 90% error reduction vs MP2 and a 60% error reduction vs CCSD. On the other hand, MP2.X with a scaling factor of 0.6 outperformed CCSD for all heavy nuclei. These results can be understood as providing renormalization of doubles amplitudes to partially account for neglected triple and higher substitutions and offer promising opportunities for future applications.

Sub-quadratic scaling real-space random-phase approximation correlation energy calculations for periodic systems with numerical atomic orbitals

Abstract:The random phase approximation (RPA) as formulated as an orbital-dependent, fifth-rung functional within the density functional theory (DFT) framework offers a promising approach for calculating the ground-state energies and the derived properties of real materials. Its widespread use to large-size, complex materials is however impeded by the significantly increased computational cost, compared to lower-rung functionals. The standard implementation exhibits an $\mathcal{O}(N^4)$-scaling behavior with respect to system size $N$. In this work, we develop a low-scaling RPA algorithm for periodic systems, based on the numerical atomic orbital (NAO) basis-set framework and a localized variant of the resolution of identity (RI) approximation. The rate-determining step for RPA calculations -- the evaluation of non-interacting response function matrix, is reduced from $\mathcal{O}(N^4)$ to $\mathcal{O}(N^2)$ by just exploiting the sparsity of the RI expansion coefficients, resultant from localized RI (LRI) scheme and the strict locality of NAOs. The computational cost of this step can be further reduced to linear scaling if the decay behavior of the Green's function in real space can be further taken into account. Benchmark calculations against existing $\textbf k$-space based implementation confirms the validity and high numerical precision of the present algorithm and implementation. The new RPA algorithm allows us to readily handle three-dimensional, closely-packed solid state materials with over 1000 atoms. The algorithm and numerical techniques developed in this work also have implications for developing low-scaling algorithms for other correlated methods to be applicable to large-scale extended materials.

Abstract:We explore the use of the stochastic resolution-of-the-identity (sRI) with the phaseless auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (ph-AFQMC) method. sRI is combined with four existing local energy evaluation strategies in ph-AFQMC, namely (1) the half-rotated electron repulsion integral tensor (HR), (2) Cholesky decomposition (CD), (3) tensor hypercontraction (THC), or (4) low-rank factorization (LR). We demonstrate that HR-sRI achieves no scaling reduction, CD-sRI scales as $\mathcal O(N^3)$, and THC-sRI and LR-sRI scale as $\mathcal O(N^2)$, albeit with a potentially large prefactor. Furthermore, the walker-specific extra memory requirement in CD is reduced from $\mathcal O(N^3)$ to $\mathcal O(N^2)$ with sRI, while sRI-based THC and LR algorithms lead to a reduction from $\mathcal O(N^2)$ extra memory to $\mathcal O(N)$. Based on numerical results for one-dimensional hydrogen chains and water clusters, we demonstrated that, along with the use of a variance reduction technique, CD-sRI achieves cubic-scaling {\it without overhead}. In particular, we find for the systems studied the observed scaling of standard CD is $\mathcal O(N^{3-4})$ while for CD-sRI it is reduced to $\mathcal O(N^{2-3})$. Once a memory bottleneck is reached, we expect THC-sRI and LR-sRI to be preferred methods due to their quadratic-scaling memory requirements and their quadratic-scaling of the local energy evaluation (with a potentially large prefactor). The theoretical framework developed here should facilitate large-scale ph-AFQMC applications that were previously difficult or impossible to carry out with standard computational resources.

Application of the Adiabatic Connection Random Phase Approximation to Electron-Nucleus Hyperfine Coupling Constants

Abstract:The electron-nucleus hyperfine coupling constant is a challenging property for density functional methods. For accurate results, hybrid functionals with a large amount of exact exchange are often needed and there is no clear "one-for-all" functional, which describes the hyperfine coupling interaction for a large set of nuclei. To alleviate this unfavorable situation, we apply the adiabatic connection random phase approximation (RPA) in its post-Kohn-Sham fashion to this property as a first test. For simplicity, only the Fermi-contact and spin--dipole terms are calculated within the non-relativistic and the scalar-relativistic exact two-component framework. This requires to solve a single coupled-perturbed Kohn-Sham equation to evaluate the relaxed density matrix, which comes with a modest increase in computational demands. RPA performs remarkably well and substantially improves upon its Kohn-Sham (KS) starting point while also reducing the dependence on the KS reference. For main-group systems, RPA outperforms global, range-separated, and local hybrid functionals—at similar computational costs. For transition-metal compounds and lanthanide complexes, a similar performance as for hybrid functionals is observed. In contrast, related post-Hartree-Fock methods such as Mølller-Plesset perturbation theory or CC2 perform worse than semilocal density functionals.

Static Subspace Approximation for Random Phase Approximation Correlation Energies: Implementation and Performance

Abstract:Developing theoretical understanding of complex reactions and processes at interfaces requires using methods that go beyond semilocal density functional theory to accurately describe the interactions between solvent, reactants and substrates. Methods based on many-body perturbation theory, such as the random phase approximation (RPA), have previously been limited due to their computational complexity. However, this is now a surmountable barrier due to the advances in computational power available, in particular through modern GPU-based supercomputers. In this work, we describe the implementation of RPA calculations within BerkeleyGW and show its favorable computational performance on large complex systems relevant for catalysis and electrochemistry applications. Our implementation builds off of the static subspace approximation which, by employing a compressed representation of the frequency dependent polarizability, enables the evaluation of the RPA correlation energy with significant acceleration and systematically controllable accuracy. We find that the computational cost of calculating the RPA correlation energy scales only linearly with system size for systems containing up to 50 thousand bands, and is expected to scale quadratically thereafter. We also show excellent strong scaling results across several supercomputers, demonstrating the performance and portability of this implementation.

Accurate Prediction of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Shielding Constants: an Extension of the Focal-Point Analysis Method for Magnetic Parameter Calculations (FPA-M) with Improved Efficiency.

Abstract:Previously, we have proposed a method, FPA-M, for focal-point analysis of magnetic parameter calculations [Sun et al., J. Chem. Phys. 138, 124113 (2013)], where the shielding constants at equilibrium geometries σe are calculated with the second order Møller-Plesset perturbation (MP2) approach, which are extrapolated to the complete basis set (CBS) limit and then augmented by the [σe(CCSD(T)) - σe(MP2)] difference at a valence triple-ζ (VTZ) basis set, where CCSD(T) stands for the coupled cluster singles and doubles model with a perturbative correction for triple excitations. This FPA-M(MP2) method provides satisfactory results to approach to the corresponding CCSD(T)/CBS values for elements of the first two rows in the periodic tables. A series of extensions have been explored here, which replace the MP2/CBS with the Hartree-Fock (HF)/CBS for efficiency. In particular, the [σe(CCSD(T)) - σe(MP2)] VTZ difference is replaced by a step-wise correction from the [σe(CCSD(T)) - σe(MP2)] difference at a valence double-ζ basis set plus the [σe(MP2) - σe(HF)] VTZ difference, leading to a new scheme, denoted here as FPA-M(HF'). A systematical comparison has demonstrated that the FPA-M(HF') method provides an excellent balance between accuracy and efficiency, which makes routinely accurate calculations of the shielding constants for medium-sized organic molecules and biomolecules feasible.
Efficient Implementation of the Random Phase Approximation with Domain-based Local Pair Natural Orbitals

Abstract:We present an efficient implementation of the random phase approximation (RPA) for molecular systems within the domain-based local pair natural orbital (DLPNO) framework. With optimized parameters, DLPNO-RPA achieves approximately 99.9% accuracy in the total correlation energy compared to a canonical implementation, enabling highly accurate reaction energies and potential energy surfaces to be computed while substantially reducing computational costs. As an application, we demonstrate the capability of DLPNO-RPA to efficiently calculate basis set-converged binding energies for a set of large molecules, with results showing excellent agreement with high-level reference data from both coupled cluster and diffusion Monte Carlo. This development paves the way for the routine use of RPA-based methods in molecular quantum chemistry.

Abstract:In this work, we have calculated the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) shielding constants for 42 molecules at the levels of second order Møller-Plesset perturbation (MP2) and coupled-cluster singles and doubles model augmented by perturbative corrections for triple excitations CCSD(T). Basis set extrapolations to the complete basis set (CBS) limit have been performed. A focal-point analysis method for magnetic parameters was proposed here, which adds the [σe(CCSD(T)) − σe(MP2)] difference to the MP2/CBS number to approximate the corresponding CCSD(T)/CBS value. Systematical comparison has demonstrated the usefulness of this FPA-M/CBS scheme.

Abstract:We present a systematic density functional investigation on the prediction of the C-13, N-15, O-17, and F-19 NMR properties of 23 molecules with 21 density functionals. Extensive comparisons are made for both C-13 magnetic shieldings and chemical shifts with respect to the gas phase experimental data and the best CCSD(T) results. We find that the OPBE and OPW91 exchange-correlation functionals perform significantly better than some popular functionals such as B3LYP and PBE1PBE, even surpassing, in many cases, the standard wavefunction-based method MP2. Further analysis has been performed to explore the individual role played by various exchange and correlation functionals. We find that the B88 and PBE exchange functionals have a too strong tendency of deshielding, leading to too deshielded magnetic shielding constants; whereas the OPTX exchange functional performs remarkably well. We claim that the main source of error arises from the exchange functional, but correlation functional also makes important contribution. We find that the correlation functionals may be grouped into two classes. class A, such as LYP and B98, leads to deshielded NMR values, deteriorating the overall performance; whereas class B, such as PW91 and PBE, generally increases the absolute shieldings, which complements the exchange functionals, leading to improved results in the calculation of NMR data. LibRPA: A Software Package for Low-scaling First-principles Calculations of Random Phase Approximation Electron Correlation Energy Based on Numerical Atomic Orbitals

Abstract:LibRPA is a software package designed for efficient calculations of random phase approximation (RPA) electron correlation energies from first principles using numerical atomic orbital (NAOs). Leveraging a localized resolution of identity (LRI) technique, LibRPA achieves $O(N^2)$ or better scaling behavior, making it suitable for large-scale calculation of periodic systems. Implemented in C++ and Python with MPI/OpenMP parallelism, LibRPA integrates seamlessly with NAO-based density functional theory (DFT) packages through flexible file-based and API-based interfaces. In this work, we present the theoretical framework, algorithm, software architecture, and installation and usage guide of LibRPA. Performance benchmarks, including the parallel efficiency with respect to the computational resources and the adsorption energy calculations for H$_2$O molecules on graphene, demonstrate its nearly ideal scalability and numerical reliability. LibRPA offers a useful tool for RPA-based calculations for large-scale extended systems.

Revving up 13C NMR shielding predictions across chemical space: Benchmarks for atoms-in-molecules kernel machine learning with new data for 134 kilo molecules

Abstract:The requirement for accelerated and quantitatively accurate screening of nuclear magnetic resonance spectra across the small molecules chemical compound space is two-fold: (1) a robust `local' machine learning (ML) strategy capturing the effect of neighbourhood on an atom's `near-sighted' property -- chemical shielding; (2) an accurate reference dataset generated with a state-of-the-art first principles method for training. Herein we report the QM9-NMR dataset comprising isotropic shielding of over 0.8 million C atoms in 134k molecules of the QM9 dataset in gas and five common solvent phases. Using these data for training, we present benchmark results for the prediction transferability of kernel-ridge regression models with popular local descriptors. Our best model trained on 100k samples, accurately predict isotropic shielding of 50k `hold-out' atoms with a mean error of less than $1.9$ ppm. For rapid prediction of new query molecules, the models were trained on geometries from an inexpensive theory. Furthermore, by using a $\Delta$-ML strategy, we quench the error below $1.4$ ppm. Finally, we test the transferability on non-trivial benchmark sets that include benchmark molecules comprising 10 to 17 heavy atoms and drugs.

Low-Scaling Algorithm for the Random Phase Approximation using Tensor Hypercontraction with k-point Sampling

Abstract:We present a low-scaling algorithm for the random phase approximation (RPA) with \textbf{k}-point sampling in the framework of tensor hypercontraction (THC) for electron repulsion integrals (ERIs). The THC factorization is obtained via a revised interpolative separable density fitting (ISDF) procedure with a momentum-dependent auxiliary basis for generic single-particle Bloch orbitals. Our formulation does not require pre-optimized interpolating points nor auxiliary bases, and the accuracy is systematically controlled by the number of interpolating points. The resulting RPA algorithm scales linearly with the number of \textbf{k}-points and cubically with the system size without any assumption on sparsity or locality of orbitals. The errors of ERIs and RPA energy show rapid convergence with respect to the size of the THC auxiliary basis, suggesting a promising and robust direction to construct efficient algorithms of higher-order many-body perturbation theories for large-scale systems.

Sparse tensor based nuclear gradients for periodic Hartree-Fock and low-scaling correlated wave function methods in the CP2K software package: A massively parallel and GPU accelerated implementation

Abstract:The development of novel double-hybrid density functionals offers new levels of accuracy and is leading to fresh insights into the fundamental properties of matter. Hartree-Fock exact exchange and correlated wave function methods, such as second-order Møller-Plesset (MP2) and direct random phase approximation (dRPA), are usually required to build such functionals. Their high computational cost is a concern, and their application to large and periodic systems is, therefore, limited. In this work, low-scaling methods for Hartree-Fock exchange (HFX), SOS-MP2, and direct RPA energy gradients are developed and implemented in the CP2K software package. The use of the resolution-of-the-identity approximation with a short range metric and atom-centered basis functions leads to sparsity, allowing for sparse tensor contractions to take place. These operations are efficiently performed with the newly developed Distributed Block-sparse Tensors (DBT) and Distributed Block-sparse Matrices (DBM) libraries, which scale to hundreds of graphics processing unit (GPU) nodes. The resulting methods, resolution-of-the-identity (RI)-HFX, SOS-MP2, and dRPA, were benchmarked on large supercomputers. They exhibit favorable sub-cubic scaling with system size, good strong scaling performance, and GPU acceleration up to a factor of 3. These developments will allow for double-hybrid level calculations of large and periodic condensed phase systems to take place on a more regular basis.
Localized Resolution of Identity Approach to the Analytical Gradients of Random-Phase Approximation Ground-State Energy: Algorithm and Benchmarks

Abstract:We develop and implement a formalism which enables calculating the analytical gradients of particle-hole random-phase approximation (RPA) ground-state energy with respect to the atomic positions within the atomic orbital basis set framework. Our approach is based on a localized resolution of identity (LRI) approximation for evaluating the two-electron Coulomb integrals and their derivatives, and the density functional perturbation theory for computing the first -order derivatives of the Kohn-Sham (KS) orbitals and orbital energies. Our implementation allows one to relax molecular structures at the RPA level using both Gaussian-type orbitals (GTOs) and numerical atomic orbitals (NAOs). Benchmark calculations against previous implementations show that our approach delivers adequate numerical precision, highlighting the usefulness of LRI in the context of RPA gradient evaluations. A careful assessment of the quality of RPA geometries for small molecules reveals that post-KS RPA systematically overestimates the bond lengths. We furthermore optimized the geometries of the four low-lying water hexamers-cage, prism, cyclic, and book isomers, and determined the energy hierarchy of these four isomers using RPA. The obtained RPA energy ordering is in good agreement with that yielded by the coupled cluster method with single, double and perturbative triple excitations, despite that the dissociation energies themselves are appreciably underestimated. The underestimation of the dissociation energies by RPA is well corrected by the renormalized single excitation correction.
On the calculation of second-order magnetic properties using subsystem approaches in the relativistic framework

Abstract:We report an implementation of the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) shielding ($\sigma$), isotope-independent indirect spin-spin coupling ($K$) and the magnetizability ($\xi$) tensors in the frozen density embedding (FDE) scheme using the four-component (4c) relativistic Dirac--Coulomb (DC) Hamiltonian and the non-collinear spin density functional theory (SDFT). The formalism takes into account the magnetic balance between the large and the small components of molecular spinors and assures the gauge-origin independence of NMR shielding and magnetizability results. This implementation has been applied to hydrogen-bonded HXH$\cdots$OH$_2$ complexes (X = Se, Te, Po) and compared with the supermolecular calculations and with the approach based on the integration of the magnetically induced current density vector. A comparison with the approximate Zeroth-Order Regular Approximation (ZORA) Hamiltonian indicates non-negligible differences in $\sigma$ and $K$ in the HPoH$\cdots$OH$_2$ complex, and calls for a thourough comparison of ZORA and DC in the description of environment effects on NMR parameters for molecular systems with heavy elements.

Abstract:We present a massive-parallel implementation of the resolution of identity (RI) coupled-cluster approach that includes single, double, and perturbatively triple excitations, namely, RI-CCSD(T), in the FHI-aims package for molecular systems. A domain-based distributed-memory algorithm in the MPI/OpenMP hybrid framework has been designed to effectively utilize the memory bandwidth and significantly minimize the interconnect communication, particularly for the tensor contraction in the evaluation of the particle–particle ladder term. Our implementation features a rigorous avoidance of the on-the-fly disk storage and excellent strong scaling of up to 10 000 and more cores. Taking a set of molecules with different sizes, we demonstrate that the parallel performance of our CCSD(T) code is competitive with the CC implementations in state-of-the-art high-performance-computing computational chemistry packages. We also demonstrate that the numerical error due to the use of RI approximation in our RI-CCSD(T) method is negligibly small. Together with the correlation-consistent numeric atom-centered orbital (NAO) basis sets, NAO-VCC-<i>n</i>Z, the method is applied to produce accurate theoretical reference data for 22 bio-oriented weak interactions (S22), 11 conformational energies of gaseous cysteine conformers (CYCONF), and 32 isomerization energies (ISO32).

Abstract:We present a highly efficient implementation for density functional calculations of chemical shielding constants. It employs the multipole-accelerated resolution of the identity for the calculation of the Coulomb part, which complements the usage of low order scaling routines for the evaluation of the exchange-correlation part and the Hartree-Fock exchange part. Introduced errors for shifts of chemical shielding constants of H, C, F, and P are evaluated for respective test sets of molecules and are related to the accuracy of shifts obtained with hybrid and nonhybrid functionals of the generalized gradient approximation type as well as for meta-GGA functionals themselves. Efficiency is demonstrated for α-d-glucose chains with more than 2500 atoms on a single CPU as well as with an OpenMP parallelized version.

Abstract:The resolving power of solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) crystallography depends heavily on the accuracy of computational predictions of NMR chemical shieldings of candidate structures, which are usually taken to be local minima in the potential energy. To test the limits of this approximation, we systematically study the importance of finite-temperature and quantum nuclear fluctuations for $^1$H, $^{13}$C, and $^{15}$N shieldings in polymorphs of three paradigmatic molecular crystals -- benzene, glycine, and succinic acid. The effect of quantum fluctuations is comparable to the typical errors of shielding predictions for static nuclei with respect to experiments, and their inclusion to improve the agreement with measurements, translating to more reliable assignment of the NMR spectra to the correct candidate structure. The use of integrated machine-learning models, trained on first-principles energies and shieldings, renders rigorous sampling of nuclear fluctuations affordable, setting a new standard for the calculations underlying NMR structure determinations.
Efficient Random Phase Approximation for Diradicals

Abstract:We apply the analytically solvable model of two electrons in two orbitals to diradical molecules, characterized by two unpaired electrons. The effect of the doubly occupied and empty orbitals is taken into account by means of random phase approximation (RPA). We show that in the static limit the direct RPA leads to the renormalization of the parameters of the two-orbital model. We test our model by comparing its predictions for the singlet-triplet splitting with the results from multi-reference CASSCF and NEVPT2 simulations for a set of ten molecules. We find that, for the whole set, the average relative difference between the singlet-triplet gaps predicted by the RPA-corrected two-orbital model and by NEVPT2 is about 40%. For the five molecules with the smallest singlet-triplet splitting the accuracy is better than 20%.
