Abstract:Semi-dry electrodes combine the advantages of conventional wet and dry electrodes for wearable devices for electrophysiological signal monitoring but face severe difficulties in providing sustainable signal acquisition with low impedance. Herein, we developed a new semi-dry electrode that can achieve smart electrolyte-replenishment for long-term stability and highly comfortable electrophysiological signal acquisition. By combining an Ag nanoparticle-loaded sponge (ANLS) with a poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel (PPH), a heterogenous interpenetrating network (H-IPN) conductive sensing layer (ANLS-PPH) was obtained, which was then integrated with an outer protective polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) layer and Ag/AgCl connection central layer to fabricate a three-layer semi-dry electrode. Most importantly, PPH enabled smart electrolyte-replenishment triggered by body temperature. This controlled, external force-free release of electrolytes ensured optimal user comfort while significantly lowering scalp-electrode impedance to 8-18 k Omega. Furthermore, owing to the outer PDMS layer, this semi-dry electrode could retain water without it evaporating into the air, thereby maintaining low contact impedance for at least 6 hours. Finally, the H-IPN structure endowed this semi-dry electrode with highly enhanced mechanical performance (258.5 kPa tensile strength) and provided stability to the electrode structure during signal acquisition. Thus, this semi-dry electrode could stably acquire electroencephalogram (EEG) and electrocardiogram (ECG) electrophysiological signals for a long time, exhibiting a high degree of consistency with conventional wet electrodes (97.9% of spectral correlation). This study presents a smart electrolyte-replenishing semi-dry electrode for sustainable electrophysiological signal acquisition, inspiring new strategies for wearable electrophysiological devices. A smart electrolyte-replenishing semi-dry electrode based on a temperature-responsive hydrogel with a three-layer structure and low contact impedance characteristics is designed for sustainable electrophysiological signal acquisition.

Abstract:Background: Incontinentia pigmenti (IP) is a rare genetic skin disorder with X-linked dominant inheritance and a characteristic sequence of cutaneous manifestations, which is regarded as lethal in XY males. Objective: To report a case of a surviving XY male with the common IKBKG (NEMO) gene deletion confirming IP. Methods and Results: A newborn XY male with suspected IP underwent a skin biopsy on affected tissue for histopathology. Molecular genetic testing was also performed on the specimen and revealed the common IKBKG gene deletion with a pattern suggestive of somatic mosaicism. Our findings are aligned with a PubMed literature review for XY males with IP and documented IKBKG mutation. We determined that only 10 such genetically proven cases have been reported, including our case. Conclusion: Although relatively rare, cases of IP in XY males with the common NEMO mutation have likely been underreported due to the unavailability of appropriate testing in the past. Karyotype and molecular testing should be considered when clinical suspicion of IP arises for a male patient.

Abstract:A personal medical device supporting continuous biosignals monitoring is presented. The novelty of this paper is to provide an intelligent electrode suitable for long-term ECG monitoring. The proposed intelligent electrode is composed of an ASIC chip and a micro pikes array established on a gauze plaster substrate. By comparing the signal quality, the patients comfort and convenience, the proposed intelligent electrode could be an alternative to the traditional adhesive electrode. A prototype for the intelligent electrode is built up based on programmable FPAA and FPGA chips.

Abstract:Wearable devices for health monitoring like electrocardiography(ECG) use commercial Ag/AgCl electrodes to detect signals, but they can cause skin irrtation and lead unreliable data during prolonged usage. This work shows alternative ECG electrodes, we obtained these electrodes using Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) hydrogel and commercially flexible materials. 4-dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (DBSA) could increase the conductivity of PEDOT:PSS and make the formation of hydrogel in commerically flexible materials at a short time. We validated the impedance and ECG signlas of these flexible electrodes, and found the optimized one(wound dressing) compared to commercial electrode and got the equivalent circuit model of it. Furthermore, we designed the ECG flexible printed circuit matching the optimized electrode to form a patch, and used the patch as wearable device to detect the ECG signals of volunteer in static condition and got the variation of heart rate value in dynamic condition. The interface impedance of our ECG electrode was small compared to commercial electrodes and the ECG signals were similar with them. The results of on-body testing shown our electrode with FPC could work as wearable devices for health monitoring in both static and dynamic conditions. These results suggest that our electrode could be alternated commercial electrode due to its high conductivity, biocompatibility, flexibility, recyclability and low price.

Abstract:Noninvasive brain–computer interfaces (BCIs) show great potential in applications including sleep monitoring, fatigue alerts, neurofeedback training, etc. While noninvasive BCIs do not impose any procedural risk to users (as opposed to invasive BCIs), the acquisition of high-quality electroencephalograms (EEGs) in the long term has been challenging due to the limitations of current electrodes. Herein, we developed a semidry double-layer hydrogel electrode that not only records EEG signals at a resolution comparable to that of wet electrodes but is also able to withstand up to 12 h of continuous EEG acquisition. The electrode comprises dual hydrogel layers: a conductive layer that features high conductivity, low skin-contact impedance, and high robustness; and an adhesive layer that can bond to glass or plastic substrates to reduce motion artifacts in wearing conditions. Water retention in the hydrogel is stable, and the measured skin-contact impedance of the hydrogel electrode is comparable to that of wet electrodes (conductive paste) and drastically lower than that of dry electrodes (metal pin). Cytotoxicity and skin irritation tests show that the hydrogel electrode has excellent biocompatibility. Finally, the developed hydrogel electrode was evaluated in both N170 and P300 event-related potential (ERP) tests on human volunteers. The hydrogel electrode captured the expected ERP waveforms in both the N170 and P300 tests, showing similarities in the waveforms generated by wet electrodes. In contrast, dry electrodes fail to detect the triggered potential due to low signal quality. In addition, our hydrogel electrode can acquire EEG for up to 12 h and is ready for recycled use (7-day tests). Altogether, the results suggest that our semidry double-layer hydrogel electrodes are able to detect ERPs in the long term in an easy-to-use fashion, potentially opening up numerous applications in real-life scenarios for noninvasive BCI.

Abstract:Paintable, fast gelation and the highly adhesive hydrogel is fabricated for ambulatory healthcare applications. The hydrogel exhibits reversible phase transition capability, which endows it with the attributes of on‐skin applicability and fast in situ gelation within 15 s. The hydrogel is demonstrated for high‐fidelity one‐hour electrocardiogram recording during various daily activities, and simultaneous electroencephalogram and electrocardiogram recording during a 30 min nap. High‐fidelity wireless electrophysiological monitoring is essential for ambulatory healthcare applications. Soft solid‐like hydrogels have received significant attention as epidermal electrodes because of their tissue‐like mechanical properties and high biocompatibility. However, it is challenging to develop a hydrogel electrode that provides robust contact and high adhesiveness with glabrous skin and hairy scalp for high‐fidelity, continuous electrophysiological signal detection. Here, a paintable, fast gelation, highly adhesive, and conductive hydrogel is engineered for high‐fidelity wireless electrophysiological monitoring. The hydrogel, consisting of gelatin, gallic acid, sodium citrate, lithium chloride, glycerol, and Tris‐HCl buffer solution exhibits a reversible thermal phase transition capability, which endows it with the attributes of on‐skin applicability and fast in situ gelation with 15 s, thereby addressing the aforementioned limitations. The introduction of gallic acid enhances the adhesive properties of the hydrogel, facilitating secure electrode attachment to the skin or hairy scalp. To accentuate the potential applications in at‐home electrophysiological health monitoring, the hydrogel electrodes are demonstrated for high‐fidelity electrocardiogram recording for one hour during various daily activities, as well as in simultaneous electroencephalogram and electrocardiogram recording during a 30 min nap.

A Complementary Dual-Mode Ion-Electron Conductive Hydrogel Enables Sustained Conductivity for Prolonged Electroencephalogram Recording

Abstract:Conductive gel interface materials are widely employed as reliable agents for electroencephalogram (EEG) recording. However, prolonged EEG recording poses challenges in maintaining stable and efficient capture due to inevitable evaporation in hydrogels, which restricts sustained high conductivity. This study introduces a novel ion-electron dual-mode conductive hydrogel synthesized through a cost-effective and streamlined process. By embedding graphite nanoparticles into ionic hyaluronic acid (HAGN), the hydrogel maintains higher conductivity for over 72 h, outperforming commercial gels. Additionally, it exhibits superior low skin contact impedance, considerable electrochemical capability, and excellent tensile and adhesion performance in both dry and wet conditions. The biocompatibility of the HAGN hydrogel, verified through in vitro cell viability assays and in vivo skin irritation tests, underscores its suitability for prolonged skin contact without eliciting adverse reactions. Furthermore, in vivo EEG tests confirm the HAGN hydrogel's capability to provide high-fidelity signal acquisition across multiple EEG protocols. The HAGN hydrogel proves to be an effective interface for prolonged high-quality EEG recording, facilitating high-performance capture and classification of evoked potentials, thereby providing a reliable conductive medium for EEG-based systems.
A highly stable electrode with low electrode-skin impedance for wearable brain-computer interface

Abstract:To date, brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have proved to play a key role in many medical applications, for example, the rehabilitation of stroke patients. For post-stroke rehabilitation, the BCIs require the EEG electrodes to precisely translate the brain signals of patients into intended movements of the paralyzed limb for months. However, the gold standard silver/silver-chloride electrodes cannot satisfy the requirements for long-term stability and preparation-free recording capability in wearable EEG devices, thus limiting the versatility of EEG in wearable BCI applications over time outside the rehabilitation center. Here, we design a long-term stable and low electrode-skin interfacial impedance conductive polymer-hydrogel EEG electrode that maintains a lower impedance value than gel-based electrodes for 29 days. With this technology, EEG-based long-term and wearable BCIs could be realized in the near future. To demonstrate this, our designed electrode is applied for a wireless single-channel EEG device that detects changes in alpha rhythms in eye-open/eye-close conditions. In addition, we validate that the designed electrodes could capture oscillatory rhythms in motor imagery protocols as well as low-frequency time-locked event-related potentials from healthy subjects, with similar or better performance than gel-based electrodes. Finally, we demonstrate the use of the designed electrode in online BCI-based functional electrical stimulation, which could be used for post-stroke rehabilitation.

Ultrasoft Long-Lasting Reusable Hydrogel-Based Sensor Patch for Biosignal Recording

Abstract:Here, we report an ultrasoft extra long-lasting, reusable hydrogel-based sensor that enables high-quality electrophysiological recording with low-motion artifacts. The developed sensor can be used and stored in an ambient environment for months before being reused. The developed sensor is made of a self-adhesive electrical-conductivity-enhanced ultrasoft hydrogel mounted in an Ecoflex-based frame. The hydrogel's conductivity was enhanced by incorporating polypyrrole (PPy), resulting in a conductivity of 0.25 S m−1. Young's modulus of the sensor is only 12.9 kPa, and it is stretchable up to 190%. The sensor was successfully used for electrocardiography (ECG) and electromyography (EMG). Our results indicate that using the developed hydrogel-based sensor, the signal-to-noise ratio of recorded electrophysiological signals was improved in comparison to that when medical-grade silver/silver chloride (Ag/AgCl) wet gel electrodes were used (33.55 dB in comparison to 22.16 dB). Due to the ultra-softness, high stretchability, and self-adhesion of the developed sensor, it can conform to the skin and, therefore, shows low susceptibility to motion. In addition, the sensor shows no sign of irritation or allergic reaction, which usually occurs after long-term wearing of medical-grade Ag/AgCl wet gel electrodes on the skin. Further, the sensor is fabricated using a low-cost and scalable fabrication process.

Abstract:Long-term high-fidelity electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings are critical for clinical and brain science applications. Conductive liquid-like or solid-like wet interface materials have been conventionally used as reliable interfaces for EEG recording. However, because of their simplex liquid or solid phase, electrodes with them as interfaces confront inadequate dynamic adaptability to hairy scalp, which makes it challenging to maintain stable and efficient contact of electrodes with scalp for long-term EEG recording. Here, we develop an on-skin paintable conductive biogel that shows temperature-controlled reversible fluid-gel transition to address the abovementioned limitation. This phase transition endows the biogel with unique on-skin paintability and in situ gelatinization, establishing conformal contact and dynamic compliance of electrodes with hairy scalp. The biogel is demonstrated as an efficient interface for long-term high-quality EEG recording over several days and for the high-performance capture and classification of evoked potentials. The paintable biogel offers a biocompatible and long-term reliable interface for EEG-based systems.

Towards real-life EEG applications: novel superporous hydrogel-based semi-dry EEG electrodes enabling automatically 'charge-discharge' electrolyte

Abstract:Objective.A novel polyacrylamide/polyvinyl alcohol superporous hydrogel (PAAm/PVA SPH)-based semi-dry electrode was constructed for capturing electroencephalogram (EEG) signals at the hairy scalp, showing automatically 'charge-discharge' electrolyte concept in EEG electrode development.Approach.In this regard, PAAm/PVA SPH was polymerizedin-situin the hollow electrode cavity by freezing polymerization, which acted as a dynamic reservoir of electrolyte fluid. The SPH can be completely 'charged' with electrolyte fluid, such as saline, in just a few seconds and can be 'discharged' through a few tiny pillars into the scalp at a desirable rate. In this way, an ideal local skin hydration effect was achieved at electrode-skin contact sites, facilitating the bioelectrical signal pathway and significantly reducing electrode-skin impedance. Moreover, the electrode interface effectively avoids short circuit and inconvenient issues.Main results.The results show that the semi-dry electrode displayed low and stable contact impedance, showing non-polarization properties with low off-set potential and negligible potential drift. The average temporal cross-correlation coefficient between the semi-dry and conventional wet electrodes was 0.941. Frequency spectra also showed almost identical responses with anticipated neural electrophysiology responses.Significance.Considering prominent advantages such as a rapid setup, robust signal, and user-friendliness, the new concept of semi-dry electrodes shows excellent potential in emerging real-life EEG applications.
Ten-Hour Stable Noninvasive Brain-Computer Interface Realized by Semidry Hydrogel-Based Electrodes

Abstract:Noninvasive brain-computer interface (BCI) has been extensively studied from many aspects in the past decade. In order to broaden the practical applications of BCI technique, it is essential to develop electrodes for electroencephalogram (EEG) collection with advanced characteristics such as high conductivity, long-term effectiveness, and biocompatibility. In this study, we developed a silver-nanowire/PVA hydrogel/melamine sponge (AgPHMS) semidry EEG electrode for long-lasting monitoring of EEG signal. Benefiting from the water storage capacity of PVA hydrogel, the electrolyte solution can be continuously released to the scalp-electrode interface during used. The electrolyte solution can infiltrate the stratum corneum and reduce the scalp-electrode impedance to 10 k Ω -15 k Ω . The flexible structure enables the electrode with mechanical stability, increases the wearing comfort, and reduces the scalp-electrode gap to reduce contact impedance. As a result, a long-term BCI application based on measurements of motion-onset visual evoked potentials (mVEPs) shows that the 3-hour BCI accuracy of the new electrode (77% to 100%) is approximately the same as that of conventional electrodes supported by a conductive gel during the first hour. Furthermore, the BCI system based on the new electrode can retain low contact impedance for 10 hours on scalp, which greatly improved the ability of BCI technique.

Abstract:Electrodes are crucial for long-term electroencephalography (EEG) monitoring. Dry electrodes eliminate issues of dehydration, skin irritation, and non-reusability associated with wet electrodes. However, overly soft dry electrodes cannot penetrate dense hair, while overly hard ones compromise comfort and signal quality. Here, we report a body temperature-triggered, phase change dry electrode to address these problems. The electrode, made from a polymer composite with crystalline sections and silver flakes, is rigid at room temperature, allowing it to pass through hair. Upon contact with the scalp, body temperature melts the crystalline sections, reducing the modulus significantly, thereby improving comfort and reducing contact impedance. This phase transition also transforms the electrode into a pressure sensitive adhesive that maintains the stable contact. Additionally, its shape memory effect allows the electrode to return to its original shape, making it reusable. The reported electrodes demonstrate superior signal quality and stability in long-term EEG monitoring.

Abstract:Electromyography (EMG) monitoring has been extensively employed for critical applications in medicine, sports science, and rehabilitation. However, the mechanical mismatch between conventional EMG electrodes and the skin can lead to electrode detachment upon significant skin deformation. To address this limitation, we develop a PEDOT:PSS-based hydrogel electrical bioadhesive interface (EBI) that incorporates molecular doping and robust adhesion strategies to achieve excellent mechanical compatibility with biological tissues. This hydrogel EBI is fabricated using direct writing of printable inks followed by in-situ thermal initiation, enabling the creation of customizable patterns with high shape fidelity. The resultant 3D-printed PEDOT:PSS-based hydrogel EBI exhibits supersoft properties (Young's modulus 5-8.5 kPa), ultra-stretchability (1,175% strain), robust adhesion (>133 kPa), and outstanding electrochemical performance (CIC reduction by 0.45% over 100,000 cycles). Additionally, we further develop a PEDOT:PSS-based hydrogel electrode specifically for stable EMG signal recording. This electrode outperforms superior signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) performance compared to commercial electrodes in EMG monitoring.

Abstract:Electrocardiogram (ECG) can assist doctors in diagnosing many cardiovascular diseases. In order to collect high-quality ECG signals continuously for a long time, low impedance and long-term stability are two essential properties of well-performing ECG electrodes. In this work, we fabricated ECG semidry electrodes with very low impedance and high stability by metalizing the surface of poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel with silver nanowires. The PVA hydrogel continuously slow-release electrolyte to infiltrate the stratum corneum while applied, decreasing the stratum corneum’s impedance and minimizing the attenuation of ECG signals. The electrodes can continuously acquire high-quality ECG signals (SNR > 30) within 24 h. Moreover, the signals can be collected during the movement. This semidry electrode can be mass-produced at a low cost, which is very promising for broad applications in scenarios requiring precise ECG monitoring over a long period of time.

Abstract:Dealing with the discomfort and complex setting-up of conventional wet electrodes in the electroencephalography (EEG) monitoring for personal daily healthcare, a flexible finger-shaped active dry EEG electrode is developed and tested in this article. The flexible finger-shaped dry electrodes, made of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and elastic electrically conductive composite (ECC), penetrate through the hair to achieve stable contact with the scalp. To improve the quality of weak signal acquisition, a customized configurable application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) is integrated using an ECC-based fabrication process, which amplifies the signal by 100 V/V, detects the leadoff states of electrodes, and communicates with the back-end (BE) electronic module for configuration and status feedback. The amplifiers have >100 M Omega @ 50-Hz input impedance to match the large interface impedance of dry electrodes. An inter-integrated circuit (I2C) slave controller with a dedicated wake-up oscillator is introduced for excellent configurability with a reduced number of wires and lower power consumption. Modulus of the proposed electrodes is similar to human tissue, ensuring remarkable user comfort. Besides, the process costs low, and mold casting is suitable for mass production. Overall, the easy-to-use active dry electrode could meet the requirements for daily EEG monitoring.
A Nanoclay-Enhanced Hydrogel for Self-Adhesive Wearable Electrophysiology Electrodes with High Sensitivity and Stability

Abstract:Hydrogel-based wet electrodes are the most important biosensors for electromyography (EMG), electrocardiogram (ECG), and electroencephalography (EEG); but, are limited by poor strength and weak adhesion. Herein, a new nanoclay-enhanced hydrogel (NEH) has been reported, which can be fabricated simply by dispersing nanoclay sheets (Laponite XLS) into the precursor solution (containing acrylamide, N, N′-Methylenebisacrylamide, ammonium persulfate, sodium chloride, glycerin) and then thermo-polymerizing at 40 °C for 2 h. This NEH, with a double-crosslinked network, has nanoclay-enhanced strength and self-adhesion for wet electrodes with excellent long-term stability of electrophysiology signals. First of all, among existing hydrogels for biological electrodes, this NEH has outstanding mechanical performance (93 kPa of tensile strength and 1326% of breaking elongation) and adhesion (14 kPa of adhesive force), owing to the double-crosslinked network of the NEH and the composited nanoclay, respectively. Furthermore, this NEH can still maintain a good water-retaining property (it can remain at 65.4% of its weight after 24 h at 40 °C and 10% humidity) for excellent long-term stability of signals, on account of the glycerin in the NEH. In the stability test of skin–electrode impedance at the forearm, the impedance of the NEH electrode can be stably kept at about 100 kΩ for more than 6 h. As a result, this hydrogel-based electrode can be applied for a wearable self-adhesive monitor to highly sensitively and stably acquire EEG/ECG electrophysiology signals of the human body over a relatively long time. This work provides a promising wearable self-adhesive hydrogel-based electrode for electrophysiology sensing; which, will also inspire the development of new strategies to improve electrophysiological sensors.

Abstract:The advancement in brain–computer interface technology has facilitated real‐time communication between the brain and external devices, rapidly expanding invasive brain–computer interfaces. Nevertheless, little progress has been made in improving the one‐way, noninvasive brain–computer interface technology using conductive methods, necessitating enhancements to the current paste contact electrodes. In this paper, a captivating spherical electrode is fabricated that exhibits noncytotoxic properties, combining alginate hydrogel with indium tin oxide conductor components. The electrode's remarkable and consistent electrical conductivity enables it to generate stable adaptive deformations that conform to diverse scalp topographies. Most impedance values fall below 10 kΩ, indicating heightened hydrophilicity compared to traditional conductive pastes, as evidenced by contact angle measurements. An empirical electroencephalography data collection study confirms its conductivity and signal transmission reliability. The acquired electroencephalography signals are utilized for emotion recognition utilizing band energy ratio analysis and support vector machine (SVM) algorithms. The operation of this system is both straightforward and convenient, requiring minimal preparation before and after the collection of electroencephalography signals. Utilizing an extensive range of raw materials and straightforward preparatory procedures enhances the potential industrial application of hydrogel electrodes, thereby significantly contributing to advancing civilian electroencephalography equipment and investigating depression‐related pathologies.

Abstract:Electroencephalography (EEG) is a generally adopted method to monitor a person's brain activity. Traditional EEG recording usually uses wet electrodes with lower contact impedance due to conductive gels. Nonetheless, the conductive gel needs pretreated skin, which leads to allergies by long-term use. In this paper, a kind of barb micro-structured (BMS) dry electrode is presented. The coating, electrical, and electrochemical properties of the electrode are studied in detail. The EEG signals of calm and blinking eyes can be collected by placing the BMS dry electrode on the forehead of the human body. Compared to the traditional wet and planar dry electrodes, BMS dry electrodes do not need pretreated skin before use, and they have a stronger anti-hair interference performance. They also record high-quality EEG signals. Further, a mercaptan treatment is used on the surface of the electrode, which effectively improves its corrosion resistance rate (corrosion resistance rate of 26.78%), which is conducive to the long-term use of the electrode, and forms a research basis for the development of the intelligent wearable field.
