Abstract:In this work we consider three species competing with each other in the same habitat. One of the species lives in the entire habitat, competing with the other two species, while the other two inhabit two disjoint regions of the habitat. These two populations just interact on a region/interface which acts as a geographical barrier. This barrier condition causes a drastic change in species behaviour compared to the classical Lotka-Volterra competitive model, showing very rich and new different situations depending on the several parameters involved in the system.

Abstract:Populations exhibiting partial migration consist of two groups of individuals: Those that mi- grate between habitats, and those that remain fixed in a single habitat. We propose several discrete-time population models to investigate the coexistence of migrants and residents. The first class of models is linear, and we distinguish two scenarios. In the first, there is a single egg pool to which both populations contribute. A fraction of the eggs is destined to become migrants, and the remainder become residents. In a second model, there are two distinct egg pools to which the two types contribute, one corresponding to residents and another to migrants. The asymptotic growth or decline in these models can be phrased in terms of the value of the basic reproduction number being larger or less than one respectively. A second class of models incorporates density dependence effects. It is assumed that increased densities in the various life history stages adversely affect the success of transitioning of individuals to subsequent stages. Here too we consider models with one or two egg pools. Although these are nonlinear models, their asymptotic dynamics can still be classified in terms of the value of a locally defined basic reproduction number: If it is less than one, then the entire population goes extinct, whereas it settles at a unique fixed point consisting of a mixture of residents and migrants, when it is larger than one. Thus, the value of the basic reproduction number can be used to predict the stable coexistence or collapse of populations exhibiting partial migration.

Abstract:Metapopulations are models of ecological systems, describing the interactions and the behavior of populations that live in fragmented habitats. In this paper, we present a model of metapopulations based on the multivolume simulation algorithm tau-DPP, a stochastic class of membrane systems, that we utilize to investigate the influence that different habitat topologies can have on the local and global dynamics of metapopulations. In particular, we focus our analysis on the migration rate of individuals among adjacent patches, and on their capability of colonizing the empty patches in the habitat. We compare the simulation results obtained for each habitat topology, and conclude the paper with some proposals for other research issues concerning metapopulations.

Abstract:We consider a nonlinear coupled discrete-time model of population dynamics. This model describes the movement of populations within a heterogeneous landscape, where the growth of subpopulations are modelled by (possibly different) bounded Kolmogorov maps and coupling terms are defined by nonlinear functions taking values in $(0,1)$. These couplings describe the proportions of individuals dispersing between regions. We first give a brief survey of similar discrete-time dispersal models. We then derive sufficient conditions for the stability/instability of the extinction equilibrium, for the existence of a positive fixed point and for ensuring uniform strong persistence. Finally we numerically explore a planar version of our model in a source-sink context, to show some of the qualitative behaviour that the model we consider can capture: for example, periodic behaviour and dynamics reminiscent of chaos.

Influence of a spatial structure on the long time behavior of a competitive Lotka-Volterra type system

Abstract:To describe population dynamics, it is crucial to take into account jointly evolution mechanisms and spatial motion. However, the models which include these both aspects, are not still well-understood. Can we extend the existing results on type structured populations, to models of populations structured by type and space, considering diffusion and nonlocal competition between individuals? We study a nonlocal competitive Lotka-Volterra type system, describing a spatially structured population which can be either monomorphic or dimorphic. Considering spatial diffusion, intrinsic death and birth rates, together with death rates due to intraspecific and interspecific competition between the individuals, leading to some integral terms, we analyze the long time behavior of the solutions. We first prove existence of steady states and next determine the long time limits, depending on the competition rates and the principal eigenvalues of some operators, corresponding somehow to the strength of traits. Numerical computations illustrate that the introduction of a new mutant population can lead to the long time evolution of the spatial niche.

Abstract:New classes of conditionally integrable systems of nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations are introduced. They are obtained by extending a well known nonclassical symmetry of a scalar partial differential equation to a vector equation. New exact solutions of nonlinear predator-prey systems, related to the diffusive Lotka-Volterra system, are constructed. An infinite dimensional class of exact solutions is made available. Unlike in the standard Lotka-Volterra system, in the absence of predators, the prey population has a finite carrying capacity, as in the Fisher equation.

Abstract:Stochastic, spatially extended models for predator-prey interaction display spatio-temporal structures that are not captured by the Lotka-Volterra mean-field rate equations. These spreading activity fronts reflect persistent correlations between predators and prey that can be analyzed through field-theoretic methods. Introducing local restrictions on the prey population induces a predator extinction threshold, with the critical dynamics at this continuous active-to-absorbing state transition governed by the scaling exponents of directed percolation. Novel features in biologically motivated model variants include the stabilizing effect of a periodically varying carrying capacity that describes seasonally oscillating resource availability; enhanced mean species densities and local fluctuations caused by spatially varying reaction rates; and intriguing evolutionary dynamics emerging when variable interaction rates are affixed to individuals combined with trait inheritance to their offspring. The basic susceptible-infected-susceptible and susceptible-infected-recovered models for infectious disease spreading near their epidemic thresholds are respectively captured by the directed and dynamic isotropic percolation universality classes. Systems with three cyclically competing species akin to spatial rock-paper-scissors games may display striking spiral patterns, yet conservation laws can prevent such noise-induced structure formation. In diffusively coupled inhomogeneous settings, one may observe the stabilization of vulnerable ecologies prone to finite-size extinction or fixation due to immigration waves emanating from the interfaces.

Abstract:We investigate the global dynamics of the Lotka-Volterra systems with anti-symmetric interactions. We prove that the dynamics of system can be determined by some associated linear inequalities, which are of independent interest in linear programming. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of solutions to the linear inequalities are established. When the solutions of the linear inequalities exist, the solutions of corresponding Lotka-Volterra systems are uniformly bounded, and the persistence and extinction of any species can be classified by an index set, which is uniquely determined by the linear inequalities. When the solutions of linear inequalities do not exist, the solutions of the Lotka-Volterra systems are unbounded. As an application, we analyze the three-species case and classify the long-time behaviors of the solutions to the system.

Abstract:A two-patch logistic metapopulation model is investigated both analytically and numerically focusing on the impact of dispersal on population dynamics. First, the dependence of the global dynamics on the stability type of the full extinction equilibrium point is tackled. Then, the behaviour of the total population with respect to the dispersal is studied analytically. Our findings demonstrate that diffusion plays a crucial role in the preservation of both subpopulations and the full metapopulation under the presence of stochastic perturbations. At low diffusion, the origin is a repulsor, causing the orbits to flow nearly parallel to the axes, risking stochastic extinctions. Higher diffusion turns the repeller into a saddle point. Orbits then quickly converge to the saddle's unstable manifold, reducing extinction chances. This change in the vector field enhances metapopulation robustness. On the other hand, the well-known fact that asymmetric conditions on the patches is beneficial for the total population is further investigated. This phenomenon has been studied in previous works for large enough or small enough values of the dispersal. In this work, we complete the theory for all values of the dispersal. In particular, we derive analytically a formula for the optimal value of the dispersal that maximizes the total population.

Abstract:Density dependent Markov population processes with countably many types can often be well approximated over finite time intervals by the solution of the differential equations that describe their average drift, provided that the total population size is large. They also exhibit diffusive stochastic fluctuations on a smaller scale about this deterministic path. Here, it is shown that the individuals in such processes experience an almost deterministic environment. Small groups of individuals behave almost independently of one another, evolving as Markov jump processes, whose transition rates are prescribed functions of time. In the context of metapopulation models, we show that `individuals' can represent either patches or the individuals that migrate among the patches; in host--parasite systems, they can represent both hosts and parasites.

Abstract:A metapopulations network is a multi-patch habitat system, where populations live and interact in the habitat patches, and individuals disperse from one patch to the other via dispersal connections. The loss of dispersal connections among the habitat patches can impact the stability of the system. In this work, we determine if there exist(s) set(s) of dispersal connections removal of which causes partitioning(s) of the metapopulations network into dynamically stable sub-networks. Our study finds that there exists a lower bound threshold Fiedler value which guarantees the dynamical stability of the network dynamics. Necessary and sufficient mathematical conditions for finding partitions that result in sub-networks with the desired threshold Fiedler values have been derived and illustrated with examples. Although posed and discussed in the ecological context, it may be pointed out that such partitioning problems exist across any spatially discrete but connected dynamical systems with reaction-diffusion. Non-ecological examples are power distribution grids, intra-cellular reaction pathway networks and high density nano-fluidic lab-on-chip applications.

Formation of stationary periodic patterns in a model of two competing populations with chemotaxis

Abstract:One of the classical models in mathematical biology is the Lotka-Volterra competition model, describing the dynamics of two populations competing for resources. Two possible regimes in this system are given by their coexistence or extinction of a weaker population. In a distributed system with diffusive spatial coupling, travelling fronts occur, corresponding to transitions between stationary states. In this work we will consider the competition model extended by extra interaction between involved populations which is given by chemotactic coupling, namely, assuming that one species produces a chemical agent which causes the taxis of another species. It is known that in a one-species model (i.e. Keller-Segel model) production of chemoattractor results in formation of stationary periodic (or Turing-type) patterns. In this work, we will investigate conditions for the formation of stationary periodic patterns in a two-species competition model with chemotaxis. We show that in this system periodic patterns can emerge in the course of Turing-type instability (classical way) or from a stable steady state, corresponding to the extinction of one of the species, due to a finite, or over-threshold, amplitude disturbance. We study the characteristics of emerging periodic pattern, such as its amplitude and wavelength, by means of Fourier analysis. We also perform computational simulations to verify our analytical results.

Abstract:International Journal of Biomathematics, Ahead of Print. This paper is concerned with a model of reaction–diffusion–advection equations arising in ecology. The equations model a situation in which the foreign species and the native species are both assumed to be competing for space in the same ecological niche, and the foreign species is just random diffusion while the native species is "braver" — a combination of random diffusion and a directed movement up the gradient of the foreign species. Our aim is to give the necessary and sufficient conditions for the coexistence of the foreign species and native species. For this, we first establish an a priori estimate result. Then we apply eigenvalue theory and homogenization principle to derive the necessary conditions for the coexistence. Finally, the sufficient conditions for the coexistence are given by using a global bifurcation method.

Abstract:Many populations of animals or plants, exhibit a metapopulation structure with close, spatially-separated subpopulations. The field of metapopulation theory has made significant advancements since the influential Levins model. Various modeling approaches have provided valuable insights to theoretical Ecology. Despite extensive research on metapopulation models, there are still challenging questions that are difficult to answer from ecological metapopulational data or multi-patch models. Low-dimension mathematical models offer a promising avenue to address these questions, especially for global dynamics which have been scarcely investigated. In this study, we investigate a two-patch metapopulation model with logistic growth and diffusion between patches. By using analytical and numerical methods, we thoroughly analyze the impact of diffusion on the dynamics of the metapopulation. We identify the equilibrium points and assess their local and global stability. Furthermore, we analytically derive the optimal diffusion rate that leads to the highest metapopulation values. Our findings demonstrate that increased diffusion plays a crucial role in the preservation of both subpopulations and the full metapopulation, especially under the presence of stochastic perturbations. Specifically, at low diffusion values, the origin is a repeller, causing orbits starting around it to travel closely parallel to the axes. This configuration makes the metapopulation less resilient and thus more susceptible to local and global extinctions. However, as diffusion increases, the repeller transitions to a saddle point, and orbits starting near the origin rapidly converge to the unstable manifold of the saddle. This phenomenon reduces the likelihood of stochastic extinctions and the metapopulation becomes more resilient due to these changes in the vector field of the phase space.

Phase Transitions in a Logistic Metapopulation Model with Nonlocal Interactions

Abstract:The presence of one or more species at some spatial locations but not others is a central matter in ecology. This phenomenon is related to ecological pattern formation. Nonlocal interactions can be considered as one of the mechanisms causing such a phenomenon. We propose a single-species, continuous time metapopulation model taking nonlocal interactions into account. Discrete probability kernels are used to model these interactions in a patchy environment. A linear stability analysis of the model shows that solutions to this equation exhibit pattern formation if the dispersal rate of the species is sufficiently small and the discrete interaction kernel satisfies certain conditions. We numerically observe that traveling and stationary wave-type patterns arise near critical dispersal rate. We use weakly nonlinear analysis to better understand the behavior of formed patterns. We show that observed patterns arise through both supercritical and subcritical bifurcations from spatially homogeneous steady state. Moreover, we observe that as the dispersal rate decreases, amplitude of the patterns increases. For discontinuous transitions to instability, we also show that there exists a threshold for the amplitude of the initial condition, above which pattern formation is observed.

Abstract:We formulate a compartmental model for the propagation of a respiratory disease in a patchy environment. The patches are connected through the mobility of individuals, and we assume that disease transmission and recovery are possible during travel. Moreover, the migration terms are assumed to depend on the distance between patches and the perceived severity of the disease. The positivity and boundedness of the model solutions are discussed. We analytically show the existence and global asymptotic stability of the disease-free equilibrium. We study three different network topologies numerically and find that underlying network structure is crucial for disease transmission. Further numerical simulations reveal that infection during travel has the potential to change the stability of disease-free equilibrium from stable to unstable. The coupling strength and transmission coefficients are also very crucial in disease propagation. Different exit screening scenarios indicate that the patch with the highest prevalence may have adverse effects but other patches will be benefited from exit screening. Furthermore, while studying the multi-strain dynamics, it is observed that two co-circulating strains will not persist simultaneously in the community but only one of the strains may persist in the long run. Transmission coefficients corresponding to the second strain are very crucial and show threshold like behavior with respect to the equilibrium density of the second strain.

Abstract:We consider the population dynamics of two species described by the mutualistic Lotka–Volterra model with a +/+ interaction in the presence of spatial diffusions. The results demonstrate that diffusion does not affect the system’s stability but it brings two situations: one is a win–win situation where both species propagate with the same largest speed; in the other situation the aggressive species has two propagating wave fronts and the other species travels with a single slow wave front. Our model may help to understand the evolution of mutualism.

Abstract:The Lotka-Volterra model reflects real ecological interactions where species compete for limited resources, potentially leading to coexistence, dominance of one species, or extinction of another. Comprehending the mechanisms governing these systems can yield critical insights for developing strategies in ecological management and biodiversity conservation. In this work, we investigate the controllability of a Lotka-Volterra system modeling weak competition between two species. Through constrained controls acting on the boundary of the domain, we establish conditions under which the system can be steered towards various target states. More precisely, we show that the system is controllable in finite time towards a state of coexistence whenever it exists, and asymptotically controllable towards single-species states or total extinction, depending on domain size, diffusion, and competition rates. Additionally, we determine scenarios where controllability is not possible and, in these cases, we construct barrier solutions that prevent the system from reaching specific targets. Our results offer critical insights into how competition, diffusion, and spatial domain influence species dynamics under constrained controls. Several numerical experiments complement our analysis, confirming the theoretical findings.

Abstract:A metapopulation structure in landscape ecology comprises a group of interacting spatially separated subpopulations or patches of the same species that may experience several local extinctions. This makes the investigation of survivability (in the form of global oscillation) of a metapopulation on top of diverse dispersal topologies extremely crucial. However, among various dispersal topologies in ecological networks, which one can provide higher metapopulation survivability under local extinction is still not well explored. In this article, we scrutinize the robustness of an ecological network consisting of prey-predator patches having Holling type I functional response, against progressively extinct population patches. We present a comprehensive study on this while considering global, small-world and scale-free dispersal of the subpopulations. Furthermore, we extend our work in enhancing survivability in the form of sustained global oscillation by introducing asymmetries in the dispersal rates of the considered species. Our findings affirm that the asynchrony among the patches plays an important role in the survivability of a metapopulation. In order to demonstrate the model independence of the observed phenomenon, we perform a similar analysis for patches exhibiting Holling type II functional response. On the grounds of the obtained results, our work is expected to provide a better perception of the influence of dispersal arrangements on the global survivability of ecological networks.
