Abstract:The hallmark of amnesia is poor explicit long‐term memory along with normal short‐term memory. It is often stated that information encountered by amnesic patients is forgotten within 1 minute of presentation. However, previous work has not distinguished between forgetting as a function of time versus the interfering material occupying that time. We show that there is a marked benefit of reduced interference in amnesic patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a condition that is characterised by anterograde amnesia in the absence of other neuropsychological deficits and carries an increased risk for Alzheimer's disease. The result suggests that long‐term memory is encoded in these patients to a greater extent than had been realised but that their memory is highly vulnerable to interference.
The relationship between psychiatric symptoms and burden of caregivers in senile dementia patients

Abstract:Objective To investigate the occurrence and severity of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia(BPSD)in elderly dementia patients,and to explore the relationship of the degree of dementia and the severity of BPSD with the burden of caregivers in pension agency.Methods Using a convenient sampling method,the Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) scale,neuropsychiatric scale (NPI)and Zarit caregiver burden scale(ZBI)were used to evaluate 145 patients with Alzheimer's disease and caregiver burden in Hangzhou.Results The incidence rate of BPSD was 51.8 ％ (72 cases),with a higher incidence rate of delusions of 22.3％ (31 cases),a higher severity of sleep disorder/nocturnal behavior [NPI symptom score (5.95 ± 4.60) points].The symptom making a greatest burden on the caregivers was delusion [ZBI score (32.81 ± 17.66) points].There were positively correlations of the burden of caregivers with the degree of dementia and the severity of BPSD (r=0.434,0.710,all P＜0.01)in patients with senile dementia.Conclusions The incidence rate of BPSD in dementia patients is higher,and the occurrence of BPSD is associated with the severity of mini mental state examination(MMSE)and dementia,which increases the burden of caregivers.More attention should be paid to BPSD in patients with senile dementia.And the social support system serving patients with senile dementia and their caregivers should be further improved.

Abstract:Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a disabling neurodegenerative movement disorder. Most PD patients are looked after by caregivers who are close to them regardless of their relationship. Caregivers may experience a notable impact on their mental health as they dedicate a significant amount of time to the patient while observing the progression of the disease. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the level of burden, depression, anxiety, and stress among caregivers of PD patients. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis between July and September 2023 among caregivers of PD patients following in the Movement Disorders Clinic at King Khalid University Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and through the Saudi Parkinson's Society. The data collection was done anonymously through an electronic self-administered questionnaire. Caregiver burden was assessed by using the validated Arabic version of the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI) scale, and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS) was used to assess the presence and level of anxiety and depression. Results: There were 118 caregivers (53.39% female, 33.9% aged between 35– 45 years, and 73.73% were sons/daughters) caring for 118 patients (57.63% , male, 38.98% aged between 66– 76). The ZBI score was highest among sibling caregivers. Moreover, burden scores were higher among those who provided care more frequently than others. Conclusions: Our study revealed that PD caregivers face a high risk of care burden, especially those who are siblings and spend longer periods in patient care. Additionally, female caregivers reported higher rates of depression, anxiety, and stress. Plain Language Summary Parkinson's disease (PD) is a serious condition that affects movement, and most PD patients are cared for by someone close to them, such as a family member. This caregiving can significantly impact the mental health of the caregiver, who often spends a lot of time caring for the patient and witnessing the disease's progression. The Effect of Psychopathology and Cognitive Functions on Caregiver Burden in Patients with Schizophrenia

Abstract:Objective: The caregiver burden in the relatives of patients with schizophrenia increases mental health problems in patients, complicates coping with the illness for families, and adversely affects the course of the illness. This study aims to investigate the effects of patients' psychopathology severity and cognitive functions on caregiver burden. Method: Forty-four patients diagnosed with schizophrenia according to DSM-5 and their primary caregivers were included in this cross-sectional descriptive study. The severity of the caregiver burden in the relatives of the patients was evaluated using the Zarit Caregiver Burden Scale (ZCBS). Symptom severity of the patients was evaluated with the Scale for the Assessment of Positive Symptoms (SAPS) and the Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms (SANS). Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), Stroop Test, Trail Making Test (TMT), and Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) were applied to assess the cognitive functions of the patients. Results: The mean ZCBS score was 47.7±26.9 in the primary caregivers of the patients. There was a significant negative correlation between ZCBS and patients' education level, time since recent hospitalization, and RAVLT scores, and a significant positive correlation between TMT, Stroop Test, and SANS scores. Conclusion: To reduce the caregiver burden, psychosocial interventions for cognitive dysfunction and negative symptoms involving patients and their families should be considered a priority.

Abstract:BackgroundThe main aim of this study was to determine the association between Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD) and caregiver burden, and the mediating role of coping strategy and personality style of caregivers to patients with dementia (PWD).MethodsThis cross-sectional study was conducted among 202 caregivers to PWD in home-based settings. Recruited caregivers were administered questionnaires regarding BPSD which was measured using Neuropsychiatric Inventory-Questionnaire (NPI-Q), caregiver burden using Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI), Brief COPE for coping strategies and Big-Five Inventory which measured personality traits.ResultsMajority of the caregivers were female (71.3%), aged 50 and above (55%), single (46%), married (43.6%), working full time (45%) while the rest work part time (22.3%), unemployed (7.4%) and retiree (25.2%), and majority were parents (58.9%) and spouse (18.3%). The duration of caregiving was less than a year (33.7%) while the rest are more than a year. Results demonstrated that the most frequent types of BPSD exhibited by PWD was irritability, followed by apathy and agitation. All of the types of BPSD showed to be significantly correlated to caregiver burden except for anxiety, elation and appetite. Of personality traits, only conscientiousness was found to mediate the relationship between BPSD and caregiver burden (p < .05). Self-distraction, active coping, planning and acceptance were the coping strategies that demonstrated to have mediation effect on the relationship between BPSD and caregiver burden.ConclusionPresentation of BPSD is correlated to caregiver burden which is partially mediated by coping strategies and personality styles.

Abstract:Abstract Objective: This study aimed to identify caregiver burden (CB) and contributing factors to CB for Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients under Subthalamic Nucleus Deep Brain Stimulation (STN-DBS) treatment, and investigation the factors, affecting the caregivers’ quality of life (QoL). Methods: Twenty-four PD patients under STN-DBS treatment and their caregivers participated in this study. Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) was applied for the clinical assessment of the patients. Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and Minnesota Impulse Control Disorders Interview (MIDI) were used to screen for neuropsychiatric symptoms of the patients. CB was evaluated with the Caregivers Burden Inventory (CBI) and the Burden Scale for Family Caregivers (BSFC-s). The health-related QoL of caregivers was assessed with the Short Form Survey-36 (SF-36). Results: Mean total CBI and BSFC-s scores of caregivers were 32.53 ± 19.71 and 11.66 ± 8.86, respectively. Nineteen caregivers defined moderate or severe caregiver burden according to BSFC-s. Both CBI and BSFC-s scores were significantly associated with UPDRS-part-1 scores, but not with the age and gender of both the patients and their caregivers, disease duration, PDQ39, BDI, HADS, LARS scores, and scores of patients for other UPDRS parts. The presence of impulse control behaviors (ICBs) significantly increased the total CBI score and total BSFC-s ( P < 0.01). The caregivers’ total and all domain scores of SF-36 were significantly affected by higher CBI and BSFC-s scores. Conclusions: The CB of the patients under STN-DBS treatment was severe. Non-motor symptoms, particularly impulsivity, significantly increased CB and worsened the caregivers’ mental and physical health.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between behavioural and psychological symptoms of Alzheimer's disease with caregiver burden and depression.METHODS: In this prospective and clinic-based study, 71 patients over 65 years of age diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease according to DSM IV diagnostic criteria who were admitted to Bakirkoy Prof. Dr. Mazhar Osman Research and Training Hospital for Psychiatry, Neurology and Neurosurgery between April 2014 and November 2014 and their 71 care givers were included in the study. Information on patients and caregivers were assessed using the sociodemographic and clinical data form. The Standardized Mini Mental State Examination (SMMSE) and the Global Deterioration Scale (GDS) were used to determine disease severity and stage. The Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) was used to assess the behavioural and psychological symptoms of the patients. Caregivers' burden and depression were assessed using the Zarit Caregiver Burden Scale (ZCBS) and the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D). SPSS 22.0 program was used for the statistical analysis of data.RESULTS: The average age of the caregivers was 52, 81.7% (n: 58) were female and 53.5% (n: 38) were the patients' daughters. Caregiver burden was found to be mild in 50.7% (n: 36), moderate in 15.5% (n: 11) and heavy in 33.8% (n: 24) of caregivers. Depression was found to be mild in 19.7% (n: 14), moderate in 19.7% (n: 14) and severe in 4.2% (n: 3) of caregivers. The most common behavioural and psychological symptoms were; apathy (60.6%), delusions (57.7%), depression / dysphoria (56.3%), hallucinations (53.5%), irritability (47.9%), anxiety (32.4%), abnormal motor behaviour (29.6%), agitation / aggression (26.8%), eating-appetite changes (26.8%) and elation / euphoria (1.4%). Patient caregivers in the group with more behavioural and psychological symptoms had more caregiving burden and depression. Symptoms having a significant effect on caregiver burden were delusions, hallucinations, agitation/aggression, depression/dysphoria, anxiety, apathy, disinhibition, irritability, abnormal motor behaviour. Behavioural and psychological symptoms that correlate with caregiver depression are agitation/aggression, anxiety, disinhibition, irritability. In the correlation analysis between NPE and ZCBS factor groups, only the factor 4 showing the economic burden did not show any significant correlation.CONCLUSION: Results show that behavioural and psychological symptoms in Alzheimer's patients increase the caregiver burden and cause caregiver depression. Preventive measures to prevent the emergence of such symptoms and effective ad rapid intervention are required. Further multi-center studies with a prospective design, involving different cultures, patients from a wider population, different care settings are required.

Abstract:Introduction: Among those caring for people with dementia (PwD) at home, more than 60% feel a caregiver burden (CB), and one in three are depressed. Reducing feelings of burden and depressive states in caregiving families will improve the living environment for PwD. However, very few studies have focused on effective methods and reducing feelings of burden and depressive states of caregivers. Thus, using data from a previous study, we aimed to determine the factors associated with perceived CB and depressive states experienced by caregivers for PwD with behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) at home. Methods: We performed single regression analysis on 285 participants' data to determine the association between each item and the Zarit Caregiver Burden Interview and Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale scores. We performed multiple regression analysis with variables considered in the single regression analysis as independent variables. Results: Severity of BPSD, caregivers' subjective health status (SHS), time of caregiving, and depressive states were related to CB, and caregivers' SHS and CB were related to depressive states. Conclusions: Similar to previous studies, we identified an association between family caregivers' perceived CB and BPSD in PwD. Additionally, we found that caregivers' SHS is commonly associated with both perceived CB and depressive states. This is a new finding. Our results suggest that interventions focusing on family caregivers' health status can help not only to reduce family caregivers' CB and depressive states but also stabilize patients' symptoms and provide home-based care for a longer time. Abstract:Caregivers of Parkinson's disease patients face responsibilities stemming from providing assistance to a person, usually a family member, who suffers a progressively disabling disease characterized by both motor and nonmotor symptoms. These circumstances impact on the physical, emotional and psychosocial aspects of the caregivers' lives and, therefore, on their quality of life (QoL). Studies have identified factors related to caregivers' global QoL and health-related QoL, causing caregivers distress and affecting their QoL. These factors are related to patients' and caregivers' characteristics and may be classified as sociodemographic, psychological and disease related. Caregiver's burden refers to the multiplicity of difficulties ensuing as a consequence of caring, including, for example, health problems, modification of habits, economic loss and QoL deterioration. Therefore, burden-related factors are also briefly reviewed. The implementation of effective interventions to preserve the caregiver's wellbeing and allow the patients to remain at home and be properly assisted is a pragmatic consequence of this knowledge.

Abstract:Background: Now positive aspect of caregiving (PAC) is well-defined as caregiver gains, satisfaction, meaningful life, and enhanced family relationship. The adjusted association of PAC and caregiver burden is not well acknowledged. This study investigated the association of caregiver burden and PAC adjusting for potential confounders. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study that recruited 132 caregivers. A linear regression model with PAC was used to estimate the adjusted associations. Results: The caregiver burden was negatively associated with PAC (mean difference in PAC per a 1-unit increase in caregiver burden = −0.12, 95% confidence interval: −0.18 to −0.056; P < .001). This association remained after adjustment for caregivers’ age and marital status as well as patients’ dependency level. Conclusion: The negative significant association of caregiver burden with PAC reinforces the need for interventional and/or educational programs aiming at decreasing the overall imposed burden. This can play an important role in improving caregivers’ general health and quality of life.

Abstract:Nowadays, there are plenty of programs and resources to prevent caregiver burden of patients with Alzheimer’s disease. In spite of that, many caregivers suffer high levels of burden and stress, which leads to an earlier institutionalization of patients. This study aimed to explore the predictors of burden in relative caregivers of patients attending day-care centers and the moderating role of caregiver kinship in these associations. A sample of a hundred and two patient–caregiver dyads was recruited. Burden was measured with a Zarit Burden Interview. Measures of patients’ cognition, insight, depression, behavioral disturbances, functional ability and overall physical health were considered as predictors. We found that apathy, irritability and delusions and, patients’ mobility are the main determinants of caregivers’ burden. The strength of relationship between delusions and irritability was higher in spouse caregivers. Interventions to reduce burden should be adapted to the specific needs of a particular type caregiver.

Impact of advanced Parkinson's disease on caregivers: an international real-world study

Abstract:Background: Caring for a partner or family member with Parkinson's disease (PD) negatively affects the caregiver's own physical and emotional well-being, especially those caring for people with advanced PD (APD). This study was designed to examine the impact of APD on caregiver perceived burden, quality of life (QoL), and health status. Methods: Dyads of people with PD and their primary caregivers were identified from the Adelphi Parkinson's Disease Specific Program (DSP™) using real-world data from the United States, Japan and five European countries. Questionnaires were used to capture measures of clinical burden (people with PD) and caregiver burden (caregivers). Results: Data from 721 patient-caregiver dyads in seven countries were captured. Caregivers had a mean age 62.6 years, 71.6% were female, and 70.4% were a spouse. Caregivers for people with APD had a greater perceived burden, were more likely to take medication and had lower caregiver treatment satisfaction than those caring for people with early or intermediate PD; similar findings were observed for caregivers of people with intermediate versus early PD. Caregivers for people with intermediate PD were also less likely to be employed than those with early PD (25.3% vs 42.4%) and spent more time caring (6.6 vs 3.2 h/day). Conclusions: This real-world study demonstrates that caregivers of people with APD experience a greater burden than those caring for people with early PD. This highlights the importance of including caregiver-centric measures in future studies, and emphasizes the need for implementing treatments that reduce caregiver burden in APD. Care burden and associated factors among caregivers of patients with bipolar type I disorder

Abstract:Background: Family caregivers play a significant role in providing care for these people at home and need new evidence on the outcomes of their caregiving. Caregiving for people with chronic psychiatric disorders, especially Bipolar type I Disorder (BD-I), is a major challenge in the healthcare system. This study aimed to examine the relationship between caregiver burden, resilience and optimism in family caregivers of patients with BD-I. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design and involved 209 family caregivers of people with BD-I by convenience sampling method. Data were collected using the Zarit Burden Inventory (ZBI), Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), and Revised Life Orientation Test (LOT-R). The participants were selected from the list of family caregivers covered by the Ibn Sina Hospital's health clinic in Mashhad, Iran. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis with a significance level of 0.05. Results: The average ages of the caregivers and their patients were 45.43 (13.34) and 36.7 (14.05), respectively. The average caregiver burden score was 41.92 (19.18), which was moderate (31 to 60). The predictors of caregiver burden in this study were caregiver-related factors such as optimism (p < 0.001, β = 0.25) and employment status (housewife: p = 0.038, β = 0.43; self-employed: p = 0.007, β = 0.12; retired: p < 0.001, β = 0.23), and patient-related factors such as the presence of psychotic symptoms (p < 0.001, β = 0.33), daily caregiving hours (p < 0.001, β = 0.16), history of suicide attempts (p = 0.035, β = 0.43), and alcohol consumption (p < 0.001, β = 0.85). These variables explained 58.3% of the variance in caregiver burden scores. Conclusion: The study concluded that family caregivers of people with BD-I had moderate levels of caregiver burden and low resilience, influenced by various factors related to themselves and their patients. Psychological education interventions within the framework of mental health support systems are recommended to reduce caregiver burden in these people.

Abstract:Background The family caregivers as primary caregivers play a crucial role regarding the care of cancer patients. As defined in the literature, the care burden encompasses the negative objective and subjective outcomes including psychological and physical health problems, economic and social issues, deterioration of family relationships and feelings of loss of control that arise from caregiving responsibilities. Aims This study aims to assess the care burden and to evaluate the associated factors among family caregivers of cancer patients receiving treatment at a state hospital in Türkiye. Methods This cross‐sectional study was conducted with the family caregivers of patients undergoing treatment in the radiation oncology department of a state hospital in Türkiye. The study population consisted of 350 individuals, with a participation rate of 80%. Participants were administered a questionnaire concerning determining daily living activities and identifying the caregiving burden through their socio‐demographic characteristics. Results The care burden among primary family caregivers while the delivery of health services was severe for 85.1% of them. The average ZBI score of caregivers was 55.92 ± 14.58. It was clarified that family caregivers' burden was influenced by several factors, including the duration of caregiving, difficulties experienced while caring for the patient, and the negative impact on their daily roles. Conclusion Our study's findings indicate the need for health professionals to support caregivers of cancer patients while over half of the caregivers were identified as having a severe level of caregiving burden. It is important to raise awareness among nurses and the oncology team with a holistic approach. In the delivery of health services, caregivers' needs should be identified first, support mechanisms should be activated and interventions should be made to meet these needs. Impact This study's findings highlight the need to identify and problems faced by family members during caregiving. This is important for sustainable and cost‐effective holistic care. Reporting Method The results of this study are reported based on the guidelines of The Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies (cohort, case–control studies, cross‐sectional studies) in Epidemiology (STROBE). Implications for practice Our study's findings indicate the need for health professionals to support caregivers of cancer patients. It is important to raise awareness among nurses and the oncology team with a holistic approach. In the delivery of health services, caregivers' needs should be identified first, support mechanisms should be activated and interventions should be made to meet these needs.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate caregiver burden and factors associated with caregiver burden in caregivers of adults with epilepsy.MATERIALS AND METHODS: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 107 patients with epilepsy and 107 their primary caregivers. Personal information form including sociodemographic data and Zarit Caregiver Burden Inventory (ZBI), were used for caregivers, and patient information form, Montreal Cognitive Assessment Scale (MoCA), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Epilepsy Quality of Life Scale (QoLIE-31) and Stigma Scale were used for patients.RESULTS: Caregiver burden was found to be related to gender (p = 0.047), marital status (p = 0.008), income (p = 0.003), education level (p = 0.05) age at onset of epilepsy (p = 0.025) and type of therapy (p = 0.005). The scale scores for cognitive functions (p < 0.001), stigma (p < 0.001), anxiety (p = 0.001), depression (p = 0.005), and quality of life (p < 0.001) of the patient showed significant correlations with caregiver burden. In addition, caregiver burden was found to correlate with some caregiver characteristics such as caregivers' age (p = 0.041), gender (p < 0.001), education (p < 0.001), income (p = 0.001) and relationship with the patient (p = 0.016). Time spent on caregiving per day was also positively correlated with caregiving burden (p < 0.001). In regression analysis, the gender of the caregiver, the gender of the patient, the stigma level of patient, and the type of treatment were found to be predictors of care burden (p < 0.05, R<sup>2</sup> = 0.61).CONCLUSION: It was found that two-thirds of the families of patients with epilepsy experienced varying degrees of caregiver burden. In addition, it was determined that caregiver burden was associated with sociodemographic and numerous psychosocial factors of the patient as well as the caregiver. It is important that both the caregiver and the patient being cared for are closely evaluated in interventions to reduce the caregiver burden in patients with epilepsy.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: The aim of this review is to make a state of the art of the potential influence of neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPs) on caregiver stress and vice versa.METHODS: We searched PubMed and Google Scholar for potential eligible articles.RESULTS: Patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) usually need high levels of care in all activities of daily living, most of them provided by family members, friends, or informal caregivers. Caregivers have to cope with both age-related conditions and dementia-related factors. Therefore, caregiving in dementia is more difficult and stressful than caregiving for older adults, affected by other conditions. Neuropsychiatric symptoms, such as anxiety, agitation, disinhibition, aggressive behavior, and sleep disturbances are more closely related to caregiver burden, and associated with more negative outcomes such as decline in their general health, quality of life, and social isolation. Caregiver burden worsens relationship between caregiver and patients with AD. Thus, this relationship may increase the frequency and severity of NPs. Predictors of burden were being a woman, a spouse, and old person with immature coping mechanisms, social isolation, with insufficient knowledge about dementia, poor premorbid relationship with patient, and high levels of negative expressed emotions.CONCLUSION: Because of the bidirectional relationship between caregiver burden and NPs, the active management strategies of dementia care should include early identification and treatment risk factors for both caregiver stress and NPs in patients with AD. Therefore, to improve one of them can be exert beneficial for the other.

Abstract:Objective To explore the burden of caregivers for Alzheimer disease patients and its influencing factors.Methods Totally 150 caregivers for Alzheimer disease patients were collected from March 2015 to June 2016 in Department of Geriatric of Nanjing Dram Tower Hospital the Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University Medical School. Self-designed general information questionnaires of patients and its caregivers for Alzheimer disease was used in this study. Caregiver Burden Questionnaire was used to investigate the burden of caregivers for Alzheimer disease patients. The influencing factors of the burden of caregivers for Alzheimer disease patients were analyzed.Results The average score of the burden of caregivers for Alzheimer disease patients was (52.54±3.29)points,in which 31 cases for mild load(20.67%), 47 cases for moderate load(31.33%), and 72 cases for severe load(48%). The multiple stepwise regression analysis showed that the level of dementia, complications, the gender of caregivers and the health status of caregivers were independent predictors of the care load,which can predict 71.6% variation (R2=0.716).Conclusions Factors affecting the burden of caregivers for Alzheimer disease patients were dementia degree, complications, gender and health condition of caregivers. Social support system should be established towarding these factors to alleviate the load and improve the care of Alzheimer's disease patients.

Abstract:Objectives: This study examined the role of caregivers' perception of cognitive impairment in burden of family caregivers in Alzheimer's disease (AD). We hypothesized that the evaluation of cognitive impairment by family caregivers plays a pivotal role in burden. Methods: The study included 110 dyads (person with AD and their caregiver) recruited from a Memory Unit in France. The cognitive impairment and depressive symptoms of person with AD were evaluated by a geriatrician using the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15). Caregivers provided self-reports on the perception of cognitive impairment (IQCODE) of the care recipient, the caregiving burden (ZBI), depressive symptoms (GDS-15), and self-esteem (RSE). Descriptive analyses, comparison of different caregiver burden groups, and multinomial logistic regression analyses to understand correlates of caregiver burden were conducted with SPSS®, version 20. Results: The findings show that the caregivers are on average 60 years old and the majority are women. They care for persons with AD, who are on average 82 years old and most of whom are women. Our results show that the duration of caregiving, depression of the caregiver, and caregivers' perception of cognitive impairment contribute significantly to burden of caregiver. Discussion: This study shows that it is necessary to adopt the caregiver-centered approach to support the dyad. The role of the caregivers' perception of cognitive impairment in AD should be developed when supporting caregivers in suffering.
Caregiving burden, depression, and anxiety among family caregivers of patients with cancer: An investigation of patient and caregiver factors

Abstract:Background: Caring for patients with cancer can result in significant burden, anxiety, and depression among family caregivers, leading to alterations in their mental and physical wellbeing. Evidence on the level of cancer caregivers' burden, depression, anxiety, their role in assisting their patients, and other patient and caregiver factors that play in improving/worsening the outcomes, is limited. This study explored the prevalence of caregiving burden, depression, and anxiety with a focus on the patient and caregiver-related factors among cancer family caregivers. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on the population of caregivers of adult patients with cancer in Zanjan, Iran between 2019 and 2020. The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and the Zarit Burden Inventory (ZBI) were used to measure outcome variables. Clinical and basic characteristics of the caregivers and patients were also collected. An independent samples t -test, analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and stepwise linear regression were performed using SPSS software version 26. Results: Mean ± standard deviation age of the caregivers (167 men and 133 women) was 40.77 ± 12.56. Of the caregivers, 46.3, 53, and 30.7% showed severe depression, anxiety, and burden, respectively. There was a significant positive correlation between ZBI with both BDI [ r (298) = 0.19, p < 0.01] and BAI [ r (298) = 0.20, p < 0.01]. Caregiving ≥24 months ( B = 14.36, p < 0.001), outpatient care setting ( B = −12.90, p < 0.001), being retired ( B = −12.90, p < 0.001), depression ( B = 0.28, p < 0.001), supplemental health insurance ( B = −7.79, p < 0.001), being illiterate ( B = 7.77, p < 0.01), surgery ( B = 8.55, p < 0.01), ECOG1 ( B = 4.88, p < 0.01), and patient's age ( B = 0.11, p < 0.05) were found to be significant predictors of caregiving burden. Conclusion: High levels of depression, anxiety, and burden were observed among the caregivers of patients with cancer. These findings underline the importance of paying close attention to the needs and psychological challenges of this population.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: Caregivers for patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) suffer from psychological and financial burdens. However, the results of the relationship between burden and cognitive function, performance of activities of daily living, and depressive symptoms have remained inconsistent. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine which factors are more significant predictors of heightened burden, cognitive impairment or functional decline, besides neuropsychiatric symptoms.METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in a sample comprised of 1,164 pairs of patients with AD and caregivers from the Clinical Research of Dementia of South Korea study cohorts. The cognitive function of each sub-domain, functional impairments, depressive symptoms, and caregiver burden were assessed using the dementia version of Seoul Neuropsychological Screening Battery (SNSB-D), Barthel Index for Daily Living Activities (ADL), Seoul-Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (S-IADL), the Clinical Dementia Rating Sum of Box (CDR-SB), the Global Deterioration Scale (GDS), the Korean version of the Neuropsychiatric Inventory (K-NPI), and the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale.RESULTS: We found that higher severity (higher CDR-SB and GDS scores) and more functional impairment (lower ADL and higher S-IADL scores) were significantly associated with higher caregiver burden. In addition, depressive symptoms of patients (higher Geriatric Depression Scale scores) were associated with higher caregiver burden.CONCLUSION: Therefore, interventions to help maintain activities of daily living in patients with AD may alleviate caregiver burden and improve caregiver well-being.
