Abstract:In Mexico, aquifers face significant challenges because of contamination and groundwater deficits caused by intensive agriculture. Continuous monitoring of groundwater quality is crucial to ensure sustainable agricultural practices and food production. This study aimed to characterize the hydrogeochemistry and water quality of the Culiacan River Aquifer influenced by intensive agriculture. Groundwater quality data were collected from six sampling sites from 2012 to 2020. The hydrogeochemical facies revealed high concentrations of bicarbonate ions. The results show a mixture of calcium/magnesium and bicarbonate/chloride, indicating an intrusion of saline water in sampling sites close to the coastal zone. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences between the sampling points. Anthropogenic contamination affected SP1 since this site is within the urban area and is the shallowest sampling well. Based on the results of SAR, CSR, SSP, KR, % Na, MH, PI indices, groundwater of SP1 was not suitable for irrigation or drinking use. The water quality indices classified the groundwater of the Culiacan River Aquifer as good in five sampling sites and excellent in one sampling site. The ion content was Na 2+ > > Ca 2+ > Mg 2+ > Cl – > > K + and did not show any ecological or public health risk.

Abstract:Population growth, poorly planned industrial development and uncontrolled production processes have left a significant footprint of environmental deterioration in the Alto Atoyac watershed. In this study, we propose using the integrated pollution index (PI) to characterize the temporary variations in surface water quality during the rapid urbanization process in the municipalities of San Martín Texmelucán (SMT) and Tepetitla de Lardizabal (TL), in the states of Puebla and Tlaxcala, between 1985 and 2020. We assessed the correlation between the population growth rate and the water quality parameters according to the Water Quality Index (ICA). The contribution of each polluting substance to the PI was determined. The industry database was created and the increase in population and industry, and their densities, were estimated. The results indicated that the temporal pattern of surface water quality is determined by the level of urbanization. The water integrated pollution index (WPI) increased with the passage of time in all the localities: SLG 0.0 to 25.0; SMTL 25.0 to 29.0; SRT 4.0 to 29.0; VA 6.0 to 30.0; T 3.5 to 24.0 and SMA 4.0 to 27.0 from 2010 to 2020, respectively. The correlation coefficients between the five parameters (BOD5, COD, CF, TU and TSS) in the six localities were positive with the population. The values that showed a higher correlation with the population were: SLG (FC 0.86), SMTL (BOD5 0.61, COD 0.89, TSS 0.64) and SRT (TU 0.83), corresponding to highly polluted localities, which generates complex and severe environmental implications due to the unsustainable management of water resources. Achieving the sustainability of water in the watershed is a challenge that should be shared between society and state. This type of research can be a useful tool in making environmental management decisions.

Abstract:Water pollution originating from land use and land cover (LULC) can disrupt river ecosystems, posing a threat to public health, safety, and socioeconomic sustainability. Although the interactions between terrestrial and aquatic systems have been investigated for decades, the scale at which land use practices, whether in the entire basin or separately in parts, significantly impact water quality still needs to be determined. In this research, we used multitemporal data (field measurements, Sentinel 2 images, and elevation data) to investigate how the LULC composition in the catchment area (CA) of each water pollution measurement station located in the river course of the Los Perros Basin affects water pollution indicators (WPIs). We examined whether the CAs form a sequential runoff aggregation system for certain pollutants from the highest to the lowest part of the basin. Our research applied statistical (correlation, time series analysis, and canonical correspondence analysis) and geo-visual analyses to identify relationships at the CA level between satellite-based LULC composition and WPI concentrations. We observed that pollutants such as nitrogen, phosphorus, coliforms, and water temperature form a sequential runoff aggregation system from the highest to the lowest part of the basin. We concluded that the observed decrease in natural cover and increase in built-up and agricultural cover in the upper CAs of the study basin between the study period (2016 to 2020) are related to elevated WPI values for suspended solids and coliforms, which exceeded the allowed limits on all CAs and measured dates.

Abstract:Agricultural intensification and urban sprawl have led to significant alterations in riverscapes, and one of the critical consequences is the deterioration of water quality with significant implications for public health. Therefore, the objectives of this study were the assessment of the water quality of the Suquía River, the assessment of LULC change at different spatial scales, and the analysis of the potential seasonal correlation among LULC change and Water Quality Index (WQI). The Sample Sites (SS) 1 and 2 before Cordoba city had the highest WQI values while from SS3 the WQI decreased, with the lowest WQI close to the wastewater treatment plant (SS7) after Cordoba city. From SS8 in a agricultural context, the WQI increases but does not reach the original values. In light of analysis carried out, the correlation between water quality variables and the different LULC classes at the local and regional scales demonstrated that WQI is negatively affected by agricultural and urban activities, while natural classes impacted positively. The spatialization of the results can help strongly in assessing and managing the diffusion of point and non-point pollution along the riverscape. The knowledge gained from this research can play a crucial role in water resources management, which supports the provision of river ecosystem services essential for the well-being of local populations.

Water quality analysis based on phytoplankton and metal indices: a case study in the Sauce Grande River Basin (Argentina)

Abstract:The increasing landscape alterations due to anthropogenic activities is of global concern since it affects aquatic ecosystems, often resulting in compromise of the ecological integrity and the water quality. In this sense, the evaluation, monitoring, and prediction of the aquatic ecosystem quality becomes an important research subject. This study presents the first integrated water quality assessment of the Sauce Grande River Basin, in Argentina, based on the spatial distribution of the phytoplankton community, the physicochemical parameters, and the metal concentrations (Cd, Cu, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) found in the particulate fraction. According to the trophic indices and the phytoplankton abundance, composition, and diversity, the water quality showed significant deterioration in the lower basin after the Sauce Grande lake. The trophic state index indicated that water was oligotrophic in over 75% of the sampling sites, increasing downstream, where two sites were characterized as mesotrophic, and one described as hypertrophic. The phytoplankton community was dominated by diatoms in zones with low anthropogenic impact and conductivity, whereas high densities of Euglenophyta, Chlorophyta, and Cyanobacteria were found in the middle-lower basin, associated with higher organic matter and eutrophication. The conductivity, turbidity, and most metal concentrations also increased towards the downstream area, even exceeding recommended levels for the metals Cu, Cr, Mn, and Pb in the middle and lower reaches of the basin (Cu: 3.5 µg L-1; Cr: 2.4 µg L-1; Pb: 1.2 µg L-1; Mn 170 µg L-1). This study generates a database for the water quality of the Sauce Grande River Basin and sets an example of how the water quality varies along a basin that crosses different topographic environments, land covers, and anthropogenic influences.

Abstract:Rivers are natural environments that collect water from basins and transport it in laminar flow to the sea. Gradual changes occur due to the erosion of the walls and the bottom of rivers and the deposition of solids that the current carries. In the Usumacinta River basin, there is a sinusoidal correlation between liquid and solid flow. The term solid flow refers to the amount of sediment in motion, gaining its name from the product between liquid flow and the concentration of suspended solids. 21 simple samples of surface water were taken from June to December 2017, in the municipalities of Tenosique, Emiliano Zapata and Jonuta, in the state of Tabasco, Mexico. The concentrations of total suspended solids exceed the maximum permissible limits of the NOM-001-SEMARNAT-1996 (Mexico), for urban public use. Moreover, according to CE-CCA-001/89 (Ecological Water Quality Criteria in Mexico), the surface water of the lower basin of the Usumacinta River is classified as polluted.

Abstract:Traditionally, water quality was assessed by physicochemical parameters. However, a more comprehensive analysis is needed to study the effects of polluted water bodies on key species over time. So, the aim of this study was to monitor through physicochemical and ecotoxicological indicators the surface water quality of four study sites with different land uses from the lower Paraná river basin (Argentina) during spring and summer of two years: Morejón stream (S1), De la Cruz stream upstream (S2), downstream (S3) and Arrecifes river (S4). Physicochemical parameters were measured in situ and in laboratory, and a Water Quality Index (WQI) was calculated. Chronic toxicity bioassays were performed with surface water samples using Rhinella arenarum embryos and larvae. Also, oxidative stress (catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione S-transferase, reduced glutathione and lipid peroxidation), neurotoxicity (butyrylcholinesterase) and genotoxicity (micronuclei frequency) biomarkers were measured at acute exposure, and an Integrated Biomarkers Response (IBR) index was calculated. The water quality varied between excellent and bad in S1, good and bad in S2 and S3, and bad and marginal in S4. S1 presented the greatest variability of pesticides and S4 the highest number of metals exceeding the limits for the local protection of aquatic life. Mainly, S4 caused lethality in R. arenarum larvae, reaching a maximum mortality of 83.3% at 504 h of exposure. The lethal toxicity of S1 and S2 varied between periods. Water samples from all sites altered the oxidative stress, neurotoxicity and genotoxicity biomarkers, and the IBR was negatively correlated with the WQI. The IBR reflected the effects of the degraded water quality on the exposed organisms. So, the importance of evaluating both physicochemical and ecotoxicological parameters to analyze integrally the water quality of polluted areas is highlighted. A degradation of the studied water bodies and its negative impact to the native amphibian R. arenarum were observed.

Abstract:Arid and semi-arid areas are among the most threatened ecosystems on the planet. The Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Biosphere Reserve (TCBR), in southeastern Mexico, is an arid and semi-arid area with high biological diversity and human settlements of eight ethnic groups. Two rivers drain the reserve, Río Grande (RG) and Río Salado (RS), which are not subject to water quality monitoring by government agencies; however, measures of water quality of these rivers are needed to focus conservation actions on this resource. This work aimed to test the effectiveness of participatory water quality monitoring with the participation of three actors: Reserve management leaders, local communities, and academics, to monitoring water quality in the rivers of the TCBR. Ninety-two residents were trained to carry out water quality biomonitoring using the Biological Monitoring Working Party (BMWP) index calibrated for the reserve. The BMWP uses macroinvertebrate families to display numerical and categorical water quality scores. Additionally, the Water Quality Index (WQI) was assessed and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) of the riparian zones was estimated in each study site. The mean WQI scores were 69.24 for RS (no treatment necessary for most crops and necessary treatment for public water supply) and 75.16 for RG (minor purification for crops requiring high-quality water and necessary treatment for public water supply). The BMWP showed five water quality categories (Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, and Poor), showing higher water quality scores in the upper portion of the basins and capable of discriminating study sites with lower scores close to human settlements. At one study site, data from participatory monitoring impelled actions taken to address a pollution source and influenced policy focus, reaching the maximum level of participatory-based monitoring. This led to avoid the discharge of wastewater into the river to conserve and protect the water resource. WQI is closely related to BMWP; however, the latter was far more sensitive to detecting areas affected by domestic water discharges. The NDVI presented low values for the TCBR, being lower in RS (the driest area). Although the NDVI showed a weak relationship with BMWP values, areas with higher NDVI values generally achieved higher BMWP values. The results of this study highlight the high sensitivity of the BMWP to detect several water quality conditions in the rivers running through the TCBR when compared to WQI. In addition, the usefulness of biomonitoring using the BMWP index was evident, as well as the importance of the participation of local inhabitants contributing to the knowledge of water quality in biosphere reserves and carrying out timely measures that allow the rivers in these reserves to be maintained in good condition.

Abstract:The Suquía River middle-lower basin (Córdoba, Argentina) is subject to a strong anthropogenic impact because it receives pollutants from different sources. Recent studies have shown the importance and the need of approaching the monitoring process of water quality from integral perspectives through the use of chemical as well as biological methods. The main goal of this study was to evaluate the fish species Jenynsia multidentata as a bioindicator of environmental pollution in the middle-lower basin of the Suquía River using biotransformation and antioxidant enzymes as well as gill and liver histopathology as biomarkers. We also studied the fish-assemblage characteristics through the fish species pattern variation and the application of a biotic index based on fish data. Our study also included the analysis of a water-quality index, heavy-metal concentrations in sediment and water, and pesticide concentrations in sediment. The chemical analyses of the middle-lower Suquía River basin showed a water-quality degradation gradient. Fish-assemblage structure changed with increasing water pollution, showing a simpler structure at the most polluted area. According to the bioitc index, the variation pattern of fish assemblages reflected the aquatic environmental deterioration. Both molecular and histopathological biomarkers reflected the same trend in relation to water quality. However, enzymes varied with more acute precision between seasons. In addition, each enzyme presented with different sensibility. At tissue level, the histopathological analysis detected chronic contamination at both stations and seasons. The present work, which comprises different levels of biological organization together with chemical analyses, generated particular although complementary information, thus evidencing the same trend of aquatic contamination. Thus, the development of integral investigations gives a comprehensive approach and becomes the most effective tool to construct policies both preventive and palliative. Our study constitutes a good model to be applied in other endorheic basins of South America.

Abstract:Water quality is an integral part of water security. Measuring the physico-chemical indicators for water quality can provide an objective picture of water health, but it does not provide information on lived experiences related to water quality, expectations of water resources, nor how the quality of water affects its usage. Perceptual information and traditional ecological knowledge on water quality can help to understand interactions between water and people, and thereby support locally appropriate sustainable water resource strategies. Accordingly, our project sought to collect and synthesise insights from local perspectives on water quality in the upper Santa River basin, Peru, a region where water quality directly relates to people's livelihoods. Perceptual data was collected via the Nuestro Rio mobile app ( N = 149) as well as walking interviews ( n = 84) (July-August 2021) in two main study areas, Olleros and Catac. We find that water quality perspectives differ within, and between, study areas and communities, however four overarching themes were identified, and are explored here: i) environmental indicators for water quality; ii) water uses; and iii) perceived causes of water quality; iv) water quality perceptions behind emotions. Most rural participants felt the main cause of poor water quality was mineral pollution, likely linked to local geology, however we also found that local perceptions of water quality depend on water usage, directly linked to domestic water use and agricultural livelihoods. Qualitative data highlighted the complex relationships between water quality, perceptions and emotions. More inclusive citizen-based science that considers what people observe, think and feel about the quality of their rivers can help provide a much deeper contextual understanding of dynamic human-water systems, with further benefits for improving water management and policy implementation.

Abstract:With increasing urbanization and industrialization, soil and forest resources are facing considerable pressure, as well as the demand for water for domestic, agricultural, and industrial activities. Therefore, it is essential to conduct regular assessments of water quality and ensure that water is consistently maintained in the context of ecosystem services (ESs). Our objective was to apply the driving forces–pressures–state–impacts–responses (DPSIR) model to understand the cause–effect relationships and interactions with anthropogenic pressures on deforestation and water quality in the Talgua River watershed and associated valley and plain areas in central-eastern Honduras. Physicochemical and microbiological analyses were conducted to determine the water quality index (NSF–WQI) and other contamination indexes. The results identified high contamination by coliforms, up to 920.00 NPM/100 mL, and high levels of contamination by organic matter (ICOMO, 0.65), solids (ICOSUS, 0.79), mineralization (ICOMI, 0.99), and the presence of bacteria (BPI, 8.50), as well as the development of eutrophication processes (ICOTRO), resulting in generally low water quality. These problems were caused by the socio-demographic and economic growth of the area, as well as the high demand for water, vulnerability to climate change, and intense agro-livestock and industrial activity, which led to deforestation processes, changes in land use, and contamination of natural water bodies that impacted the overexploitation of aquifers. After applying the DPSIR model, strategies are proposed for the management and administration of the watershed aimed at preserving the water, soils, and forest resources, while promoting stakeholder, business, education sector, and public administration participation.

Abstract:This study assesses the variability of physicochemical and biochemical parameters, identifies principal pollutant sources, and characterizes water quality in Yuriria reservoir using water quality indexes in combination with multivariate statistical techniques. In situ parameters were measured in 55 reservoir sites including surface and deep points and in 7 associated channels. Moreover, major compounds and biochemical data were determined. Yuriria reservoir had alkaline, bicarbonate-mixed waters, with total dissolved solids (TDS) of 393.83 ± 3.43 mg L-1. Water quality index (WQI) indicated a good class for agricultural irrigation but very poor and poor classes for preservation of aquatic life. The nutrient inputs and the internal nitrogen recycling triggered a hypereutrophic status in the reservoir. The decomposition of residual biomass from aquatic macrophytes contributed to reduce dissolved oxygen (DO) in the hypolimnetic waters (mean DO = 3.86 mg L-1). Statistical analysis revealed that the study area is highly exposed to anthropogenic stress and in a lesser extent to natural processes. Urban and agriculture runoff enhanced the salinization and the generation of solid particles which deteriorated water quality. Chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and NO3--N presented a common anthropogenic origin by external (point and diffuse) and internal pollution sources, while a diffuse source (agricultural activities) was reveled for phosphorus. This study is important to be used in systematic monitoring and sustainable co-management programs and for formulating the necessary strategies to remediate the Yuriria reservoir water quality and extrapolate to other reservoirs worldwide.
Spatiotemporal analysis of water quality indicators in a watershed in Brazilian Cerrado

Abstract:Tools for monitoring and evaluating water quality are necessary for the measurement of environmental impacts arising from diverse activities in hydrographic basins. Here, the water quality of the Verdinho River, an important hydrographic basin of Brazilian Cerrado, was evaluated using 16 physical–chemical parameters. The indicators with major interference with water quality were identified by principal component analysis (PCA), in order to suggest less laborious and less expensive assessments. The water quality index (WQI) was applied considering seasonal changes and the analysis of eutrophication potential was determined using the trophic state index (TSI). The concentrations of chemical water quality indicators (e.g., nitrate, total phosphorus, total nitrogen) increased mainly in the rainy season. The PCA explained 73.69% of the variance among the data. Total solids, temperature, turbidity, alkalinity, biochemical oxygen demand, hardness, total phosphorus, nitrite, nitrate and ammonia showed strong correlations. The water quality was classified in the 'good' category in most of the evaluations. The TSI presented conditions between mesotrophic and eutrophic. The indicators that are analyzed seasonally and spatially are associated with natural and anthropic factors. The future implementation of a water catchment project water depends on environmental planning strategies to reduce the impacts on the water quality of this hydrographic basin.

Abstract:Commercial metal-semiconductor-field-effect transistors (MESFET's) have opaque gate. We present here the frequency-dependent characteristics of an ion-implanted GaAs MESFET with opaque gate under illumination. The incident light enters the device through the gate-source and gate-drain spacings. Two photovoltages are developed: one across the Schottky junction due to generation in the side walls of the depletion layer below the gate and the other across the channel-substrate junction due to generation in the channel-substrate depletion region. The frequency dependence of the two photovoltages along with channel charge, drain-source current, transconductance and channel conductance of the device have been studied analytically and compared with the published theoretical results. For the first time, a commercially available GaAs optically illuminated field-effect transistor (OPFET) has been analyzed for frequency dependent characteristics instead of the transparent/semitransparent gate OPFET.
Determination of the ecological water quality in the Orienco stream using benthic macroinvertebrates in the Northern Ecuadorian Amazon

Abstract:In recent years, pollution of watercourses in nearby protected ecosystems has increased due to urbanization. Standard physiochemical methods and probes are one way to monitor watercourses for quality. However, they often do not provide the full ecological status of the body of water. In this work, we set up to assess the ecological water quality of an urban stream by using benthic macroinvertebrates as bioindicators. We conducted the work on the Orienco stream in Lago Agrio in the province of Sucumbíos in the Northern Ecuadorian Amazon (NEA). The stream has become a sink of raw domestic sanitary wastewater from rural and urban areas. A total of 4511 macroinvertebrates from 10 families were identified across 17 sampling points. We compared our results from the biotic indices derived from the macroinvertebrates to standard water‐quality parameters (temperature, conductivity, DO, BOD, COD, TSS, NH3‐N, pH) simultaneously sampled in the stream. The standard parameter results indicated that the water‐quality levels of the stream met the Ecuadorian water‐quality criteria met most of the time. However, the results from the biotic indices classified the stream water as a poor or very poor water quality. The results from the Biological Monitoring Working Party, Average Score per Taxon and Family Biotic Indices had overall scores of heavily polluted waters of 45, 4.5 and 8.74, respectively. Furthermore, these results were consistent with reduced richness and evenness, and overall lower Shannon diversity and relatively higher Simpson Dominance indices of 0.71 and 2.56, respectively. We conclude that the macroinvertebrates were better indicators of the ecological water quality of the Orienco stream than the water quality parameters from standard methods and probes alone. Our findings highlight the need for a more integrated ecological assessments, which can provide critical information to management and conservation strategies of urban watercourses in the NEA region.This article is protected by copyright. Assessment of surface and groundwater quality in the Ctalamochita River basin, Argentina: hydrogeochemical characteristics and exploratory data analysis

Abstract:Freshwater and groundwater are important resources for the drinking water supporting agricultural and livestock activities in the Córdoba province, Argentina. The aim of this study was to assess the physicochemical and microbiological quality of surface water (n = 14) and groundwater (n = 17) sites in the middle-lower basin of the Ctalamochita River (Córdoba, Argentina) for human and animal consumption. A total of 18 physicochemical and five microbiological parameters were evaluated to determine the hydrogeological characteristics of both water resources and their suitability for human and animal consumption using the Water Quality Index (WQI). The results indicated that Na + and HCO 3 − were the dominant cation and anion, respectively, in both water resources. Physicochemical and microbiological parameters values were compared with national and international guidelines. The WQI showed that groundwater samples exhibited poorer quality when compared to surface waters for human consumption, primarily due to elevated concentrations of major ions and the presence of total coliforms and Pseudomonas aeruginosa . Meanwhile, the WQI for animal consumption indicated that both surface and groundwater samples were suitable for this purpose. The Piper diagram showed that most of the surface water samples were classified as Na + –Cl − –HCO 3 − , while groundwater samples were classified as Na + –HCO 3 − . This classification highlights the hydrogeochemical differences between the two water resources. The Gibbs diagram indicates that the chemical composition of both surface and groundwater sources is primarily controlled by processes of rock-water interaction and evaporation. The findings of this study will facilitate the development of a proactive plan to safeguard and sustain water resources in the middle-lower basin of the Ctalamochita River. This can be achieved through the implementation of preventive strategies and the introduction of innovative policies.

Abstract:Past research has mapped the limitations of water quality data in developing countries. This contribution reports a detailed assessment of the status of water quality data of the Cesar River, one of the main tributaries of the Magdalena River, which is regarded as the largest river system in Colombia. Our assessment indicates that the data is limited (in terms of length of record and resolution spatial) and exhibits significant information gaps, and that it is collected through a network of very sparse ground stations with deficient density. Subnational permissible limits for the five main water quality parameters (i.e., pH, TP, TN, DO, TSS) determine that water has reached worrisome levels of pollution. The data limitations does not allow for establishing the influence of natural (e.g., soil erosion) or anthropogenic processes such as wastewater discharges and in-channel sand mining into water quality. Since Colombia is a member of the Pacific Alliance and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) the associated supranational water quality regulatory frameworks are analyzed as they may guide the permissible limits and targets in the coming years. A freely accessible database of water quality observations between the years 2004–2020 of the Cesar River accompanies this contribution. We believe that it potentially constitutes a scientific input to plan for restoring the ecosystem services of the Cesar. We also believe this study depicts a representative case of the status of several rivers from the Latin American sphere and other developing countries.

Abstract:Assessment of surface water quality is an issue of currently high importance, especially in polluted rivers which provide water for treatment and distribution as drinking water, as is the case of the Sinos River, southern Brazil. Multivariate statistical techniques allow a better understanding of the seasonal variations in water quality, as well as the source identification and source apportionment of water pollution. In this study, the multivariate statistical techniques of cluster analysis (CA), principal component analysis (PCA), and positive matrix factorization (PMF) were used, along with the Kruskal-Wallis test and Spearman’s correlation analysis in order to interpret a water quality data set resulting from a monitoring program conducted over a period of almost two years (May 2013 to April 2015). The water samples were collected from the raw water inlet of the municipal water treatment plant (WTP) operated by the Water and Sewage Services of Novo Hamburgo (COMUSA). CA allowed the data to be grouped into three periods (autumn and summer (AUT-SUM); winter (WIN); spring (SPR)). Through the PCA, it was possible to identify that the most important parameters in contribution to water quality variations are total coliforms (TCOLI) in SUM-AUT, water level (WL), water temperature (WT), and electrical conductivity (EC) in WIN and color (COLOR) and turbidity (TURB) in SPR. PMF was applied to the complete data set and enabled the source apportionment water pollution through three factors, which are related to anthropogenic sources, such as the discharge of domestic sewage (mostly represented by Escherichia coli (ECOLI)), industrial wastewaters, and agriculture runoff. The results provided by this study demonstrate the contribution provided by the use of integrated statistical techniques in the interpretation and understanding of large data sets of water quality, showing also that this approach can be used as an efficient methodology to optimize indicators for water quality assessment.

Abstract:Groundwater salinization is a major threat to the water supply in coastal and arid areas, a threat that is expected to worsen by increased groundwater withdrawals and by global warming. Groundwater quality in Central Mexico may be at risk of salinization due to its arid climate and since groundwater is the primary source for drinking and agriculture water. Only a handful of studies on groundwater salinization have been reported for this region, most constrained to a small area and without trend analyses. To determine the extent of salinization, total dissolved solids (TDS), sodium (Na+), nitrate as nitrogen (NO3-N) and sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) are commonly used. Available water quality data for about 200 wells, sampled annually between 2012 and 2021, were used to map the spatial distribution of NO3-N, TDS, Na+, and SAR. Upward trends and Spearman correlation were also determined. The study area was subdivided into three sections to estimate the impact of climate and lithologies on groundwater salinity. The results showed that human activities (agriculture) and dissolution of carbonate and evaporite rocks were major sources of salinity, and evaporation an enriching factor. Temporal trends occurred in only a few (about 7%) wells, primarily in NO3-N. The water quality for irrigation was generally good, (SAR 1750 mg L−1 and SAR > 9). The results detected one aquifer with consistently high concentrations and upward trends and eight lesser impacted aquifers. Identifying the wells with upward trends is important in narrowing down the possible causes of their concentration increase with time and to develop strategies that will infuse sustainability to groundwater management.
