Abstract:Algal blooms and eutrophication in natural surface water not only pose a threat to human health, but also adversely affect the water purification process. Ultrafiltration (UF) has been proved to be effective for the retention of algal cells, but its further application is still restricted by the relatively limited removal of algal organics and membrane fouling. To enhance the UF performance, a synergistic process using calcium peroxide and ferrous sulfate (CaO2/FeSO4) was proposed for the treatment of Microcystis aeruginosa-laden water. The results suggested that the removal of algal cells and organics, fluorescent components were effectively increased with the synergism of CaO2 and FeSO4. The particle size distribution and morphology revealed that the size of algal pollutants apparently increased due to the formation of algal flocs. With CaO2/FeSO4 pretreatment, the terminal specific flux of polyethersulfone and polyvinylidene fluoride membranes were increased by 75.0% and 56.5%, individually. The fouling resistances were significantly reduced, and the fouling mechanism transition to cake filtration was delayed. The membrane interface properties including morphologies and functional groups were characterized, further verifying the effectiveness. The in-situ formed Fe3+ integrated with Ca(OH)2 showed excellent coagulation effect, thus promoting the agglomeration of algal foulants. Simultaneously, the generated hydroxyl radical could improve the oxidative degradation of algal organics. In conclusion, the CaO2/FeSO4 strategy has great advantages and application prospects in enhancing UF performance for Microcystis aeruginosa-laden water treatment.

Abstract:The application of ultrafiltration (UF) technology in algae-laden water is limited due to the serious membrane fouling caused by algal foulants. Herein, a Ferrate/FeSO 4 (Fe(VI)/Fe(II)) pretreatment was proposed aiming to improve the performance of UF. The results showed that the synergistic of Fe(VI) and Fe(II) significantly increased the zeta potential of Microcystis aeruginosa, which enhanced the agglomerative tendency of algal foulants, and the particle size of flocs remarkably increased due to the in-situ generated Fe(III). Results from dissolved organic carbon (DOC), UV 254 , K + , and fluorescent spectra indicated that the introduction of Fe(II) avoided the excessive oxidation of Fe(VI) to algal cells and reduced the production of intracellular organic matter (IOM), while the strong coagulation efficiency of in-situ Fe(III) further enhanced the removal effect of algal organics. Meanwhile, the molecular weight distribution showed that macromolecular organics were decomposed into low molecular matters under Fe(VI) oxidation, while the Fe(VI)/Fe(II) process reduced the formation of small molecular matters compared with single Fe(VI) pretreatment. The algal-source fouling was efficaciously mitigated under the optimal experimental condition, the terminal membrane flux could be increased from 0.16 to 0.62, while reversible and irreversible fouling decreased by 67.1% and 64.1%, respectively. Modeling analysis demonstrated that the Fe(VI)/Fe(II) process altered the fouling mechanism by delaying the formation of cake filtration. Membrane interface characterization further indicated that large size algal flocs form a loose cake layer and reduce the deposition of algal pollutants on the membrane surface. The Extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) theory confirmed that the hydrophobic adsorption between the algal foulant and the membrane was weakened, thus relieving the membrane fouling. Overall, this strategy can be considered for application in improving the UF performance and mitigating algal-source membrane fouling.

Abstract:Algal fouling has become one of the most critical factors hindering the large-scale development of membrane processes in algae-laden water treatment. Herein, novel calcium hypochlorite (Ca(ClO)2)/ferrous iron (Fe(II)) process was proposed as an ultrafiltration (UF) membrane pretreatment technology, and its effects on membrane fouling and water properties were systematically studied. Results showed that the terminal specific fluxes were significantly elevated to 0.925 and 0.933, with the maximum removal ratios of reversible resistance reaching 99.65% and 96.99% for algae-laden water and extracellular organic matter (EOM), respectively. The formation of cake filtration was dramatically delayed, accompanied by a significant reduction of the adhesion free energy, and the contaminants attached to the membrane surface were effectively decomposed. With respect to water quality, the removal ratios of OD685 and turbidity achieved 81.25-95.31% and 90.16-97.72%, individually. The maximum removal rates of DOC, UV254 and fluorescent organics in influent water reached 46.14%, 55.17% and 75.77%, respectively. Furthermore, the generated reactive species (e.g., •OH, Cl•, Cl2•- and ClO•) could efficiently degrade EOM, which appreciably reduced the electrostatic repulsion between the algal foulants while ensuring the integrity of algal cells. At the Ca(ClO)2/Fe(II) dosage of 0.04/0.24 mM, the zeta potential changed from -32.9 mV to -10.8 mV, and a large range of aggregates was formed. The macromolecules in the algal solution were significantly removed, and the proportion of micromolecular organics was increased to some extent. Coagulation of in-situ formed Fe(III) dominated the membrane fouling mitigation, and the reactive species also contributed to the improvement of filtration performance. Overall, Ca(ClO)2/Fe(II) pretreatment has an exceptional prospect for efficient degradation of algal pollutants and enhancement of UF capability.

Abstract:Forward osmosis (FO) is a high-efficiency and low-energy consumption way for algae-laden water treatment, whereas membrane fouling is still an unavoidable problem in its practical application. In this work, a strategy of ferrous-activated calcium peroxide (Fe(II)/CaO 2 ) was proposed to control FO membrane fouling in the purification of algae-laden water. With the treatment of Fe(II)/CaO 2 , the aggregation of algal contaminants was promoted, the cell viability and integrity were well preserved, and the fluorescent organics were efficiently removed. With respect to the fouling of FO membrane, the flux decline was generally alleviated, and the flux recovery was promoted to varying degrees under different process conditions. It could be revealed through the extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory that the adhesion of contaminants and membrane surfaces was reduced by Fe(II)/CaO 2 treatment. The interface morphologies and functional groups of membrane verified that Fe(II)/CaO 2 could mitigate the fouling by reducing the amount of algal contaminants adhering to the FO membrane. The co-coagulation of in-situ Fe(III) together with Ca(OH) 2 , as well as the oxidation of • OH were the main mechanisms for fouling mitigation. In sum, the Fe(II)/CaO 2 process could effectively improve the efficiency of FO for algae-laden water treatment, and has broad application prospects.

Abstract:Oxidation treatment of algae-laden water may cause cells rupture and emission of intracellular organics, thus restricting its further popularization. As a moderate oxidant, calcium sulfite could be slowly released in the liquid phase, thus exhibiting a potential to maintain the cells integrity. To this end, calcium sulfite oxidation activated by ferrous iron was proposed integrated with ultrafiltration (UF) for removal of Microcystis aeruginosa, Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus quadricauda. The organic pollutants were significantly eliminated, and the repulsion between algal cells was obviously weakened. Through fluorescent components extraction and molecular weights distribution analyses, the degradation of fluorescent substances and the generation of micromolecular organics were verified. Moreover, the algal cells were dramatically agglomerated and formed larger flocs under the premise of maintaining high cell integrity. The terminal normalized flux was ascended from 0.048-0.072 to 0.711-0.956, and the fouling resistances were extraordinarily decreased. Due to the distinctive spiny structure and minimal electrostatic repulsion, Scenedesmus quadricauda was easier to form flocs, and its fouling was more readily mitigated. The fouling mechanism was remarkably altered through postponing the formation of cake filtration. The membrane interface characteristics including microstructures and functional groups firmly proved the fouling control efficiency. The reactive oxygen species (i.e., SO4•- and 1O2) generated through the principal reactions and Fe-Ca composite flocs played dominant roles in alleviating membrane fouling. Overall, the proposed pretreatment exhibits a brilliant application potential for enhancing UF in algal removal.

Abstract:Membrane technology has been shown to be promising for the treatment of algae-laden water, but membrane fouling is still an obstacle influencing the purification efficiency and effluent quality. To mitigate ultrafiltration membrane fouling during Microcystis aeruginosa-laden water treatment, a strategy of sodium percarbonate pre-oxidation activated with ferrous ion (Fe2+/SPC) was put forward in this study. Due to the synergistic effect of Fe2+ and SPC, this process was significantly more efficient with the terminal specific flux increased from 0.097 to 0.397, and the reversible fouling resistance reduced by approximately 80%. It was also found that subsequent sedimentation followed by Fe2+/SPC could further improve the fouling control efficiency. The model fitting results indicated that Fe2+/SPC pre-oxidation delayed the transition from standard blocking to cake filtration. Extracellular organic matter and algal cells were extracted from algal foulants to explore the contribution of each component, and the fouling control efficiencies were systematically studied. The characteristics of the algal foulants were determined with fluorescence excitation-emission matrix spectrum, and the results suggested that macromolecular proteinaceous substances were more efficiently removed by Fe2+/SPC, in comparison with humic-like matters. The alleviation of membrane fouling was also verified by the characterization methods of scanning electron microscopy and attenuated total reflection-Fourier infrared spectroscopy. Overall, the proposed strategy of Fe2+/SPC has an application prospect for membrane fouling control in algal-laden water treatment.
Moderate KMnO4-Fe(II) Pre-Oxidation for Alleviating Ultrafiltration Membrane Fouling by Algae During Drinking Water Treatment

Abstract:Although ultrafiltration (UF) membranes are highly beneficial for removing algae, the removal process causes serious UF membrane fouling. To avoid the unfavorable effects of algal cells that have been damaged by oxidants, our previous study reported a novel, moderate pre-oxidation method (KMnO4-Fe(II) process) that aimed to achieve a balance between the release of intracellular organic matter and enhanced algae removal. This study further investigated the performance of a UF membrane with KMnO4-Fe(II) pretreatment in the presence of algae-laden reservoir water after a long running time. We found that algae could be completely removed, membrane fouling was significantly alleviated, and the overall performance was much better than that of Fe(III) coagulation alone. The transmembrane pressure (TMP) during Fe(III) coagulation increased to 42.8 kPa, however, that of the KMnO4-Fe(II) process only increased to 25.1 kPa for after running for 90 d. The slower transmembrane pressure was attributed to the larger floc size, higher surface activity, and inactivation of algae. Although there was little effect on microorganism development, lower microorganism abundance (20.7%) was observed during the KMnO4-Fe(II) process than during coagulation alone (44.9%) due to the release of extracellular polymeric substances. We also found that the floc cake layer was easily removed by washing, and many of the original membrane pores were clearly observed. Further analysis demonstrated that the effluent quality was excellent, especially its turbidity, chromaticity, and Mn and Fe concentrations. Based on the outstanding UF membrane performance, it may be concluded that the KMnO4-Fe(II) process exhibits considerable potential for application in the treatment of algae-laden water.

Abstract:Effect of ferrate [Fe(VI)] pre-oxidation on improving FeCl3/ultrafiltration (UF) of algae-laden source water was investigated. Fe(VI) disrupted algae cells and the in situ formed ferric (hydr)oxides aggregated with cell debris. Particle size and zeta potential of algae increased by 20% and 55% on average, respectively, after treatment with 0.02 mM of Fe(VI). These variations facilitated the formation of algae-ferric floc. Fe(VI) degraded algal extracellular organic matter into lower molecular weight products (fulvic-like and humic-like substances). Membrane flux, reversible membrane resistance (Rr) and irreversible membrane resistance (Rir) were improved by 51%, 61%, and 52% in Fe(VI) (0.02 mM)/FeCl3/UF treatment group compared with FeCl3/UF treatment after three filtration cycles. Fe(VI)/FeCl3/UF removed more than 10% ~ 34% of the dissolved organic compounds (DOC) and 6% ~ 17% of the total nitrogen (TN) compared with FeCl3/UF. Due to the enhanced removal of DOC and TN, formation potential of 12 kinds of carbonaceous-disinfection byproducts (C-DBPs) and 7 kinds of nitrogenous-disinfection byproducts (N-DBPs) decreased by 32.5% and 22.5%, respectively. Fe(VI) pre-oxidant was effective for alleviating membrane fouling and reducing formation potential of DBPs in algal laden water treatment.

Abstract:Membrane fouling remains a significant issue in algae removal during membrane filtration. We constructed an interfacial catalytic oxidation membrane to mitigate membrane fouling caused by microalgae. Specifically, zero-valent iron (ZVI) nanoparticles (NPs) were immobilized on polycarbonate (PC) membrane to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The activated PMS can oxidize extracellular organic matter (EOM) near the membrane surface and result in better filtration performance. The optimal ZVI NPs coated PC membrane with 0.1 mM PMS exhibited excellent anti-fouling property during the filtration of Chlorella v. suspension. The membrane performance can stay stable at least in five algae-laden water filtration cycles by regenerating ZVI NPs. Moreover, the interfacial oxidation only happened on the membrane surface, thereby minimizing algae cell breakage and associated disinfection by-products formation potential (DBPFP) in comparison with traditional in situ pre-oxidation. Indeed, no severe cell breakage was observed with the PMS dosages of less than 0.2 mM. The new interfacial catalytic oxidation strategy proposed here paves a sustainable way to the treatment of algae-laden water.

Abstract:In this study, a moderate oxidation strategy, in-situ pretreatment with ferrous activated sulfite (Fe(II)/S(IV)), was employed to mitigate membrane fouling during the filtration of algae-laden water and to improve the rejection of organic matter. It was worth noting that the moderate oxidant can avoid serious cells breakage and control the release of intracellular organic matter. Besides, sulfite-based pretreatment had an excellent removal effect DBPs, including chloroform (TCM), dichloroacetonirile (DCAN) and trichloronitromethane (TCNM). Fe(II)/S(IV) pretreatment also improved the removal of DOC and UV254 and the proportion of hydrophilic substances was increased to 91.4% which was conductive to membrane fouling alleviation. With the increase in Fe(II) dosage, both the Rr and Rir were declined since the macromolecular organic transforming to micromolecular organic and the coagulation effect by the in-situ generation of Fe(III). Meanwhile, permeable channels formed on the loose and porous cake layer due to the in-situ Fe(III) could enhance the specific flux. When the ratio of Fe(II)/S(IV) was 2:1, the fouling mechanism was inferred to cake filtration which showed a great discrepancy with other condition.

Abstract:Ferrate (VI) is a unique and “green” chemical that can be utilized for oxidation, disinfection and coagulation simultaneously in a single unit without producing by-product. Herein, for the first time, we reported the integrated process of ferrate (VI) pretreatment coupled with ceramic membrane reactor for mitigating membrane fouling in natural reclaimed water treatment. Membrane fouling was effectively mitigated by ferrate pretreatment with the maximum trans-membrane pressure (TMP) reduction of 81.8% achieved at ferrate dosage of 0.15 mM. Moreover, the fouling mechanism changed from intermediate-standard blocking to cake-intermediate blocking with ferrate pretreatment and the contribution of cake layer fouling was significantly diminished with increase of ferrate dosage (≤ 0.15 mM). Statistical analysis including redundancy analysis and clustering correlation analysis showed that chemical oxygen demand (COD), dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and polysaccharide were the most important positive factors to Rt with their correlation coefficients above 0.92 while SS and turbidity were the most important negative factors to Rt with their correlation coefficients below − 0.87. Long-term filtration experiments also confirmed the membrane fouling control performance by ferrate with the significant extension of the onset of membrane fouling.
Improved Ultrafiltration Performance Through Dielectric Barrier Discharge/sulfite Pretreatment: Effects of Water Matrices and Mechanistic Insights

Abstract:The feasibility of utilizing a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD)/sulfite-ultrafiltration system was investigated in various real water bodies, aiming to clarify the mechanism behind alleviating membrane fouling while synchronously degrading perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) during the treatment process of Yangtze River water. The results demonstrated that the DBD/sulfite pretreatment exhibited remarkable rates of membrane flux mitigation (>84.10 %) and efficient degradation rates of PFOA (>85.13 %), which decreased with increasing pH from 3.0 to 11.0. The presence of anions, cations, and natural organic matter slightly hindered the membrane fouling mitigation and PFOA degradation by quenching free radicals; however, the addition of SO42- had a negligible impact. The mitigation of membrane fouling was attributed to the significant involvement of various radicals, including hydroxyl radical (•OH), sulfate radical (SO4•-), electron (e-/eaq-), su-peroxide anion radicals (•O2-), and other radicals such as SO3•-, exhibiting respective contributions of 33.25 %, 28.49 %, 20.56 %, 11.32 %, and 6.39 % in a synergistic redox effect. The pretreatment effectively reduced standard blocking and cake filtration fouling mechanisms by creating a sparse fouling layer on the membrane surface while increasing its roughness. Additionally, the main active species that played a significant role in the degradation of PFOA were identified as SO4•-, •OH, and eaq-. These species contributed approximately 43.63 %, 24.39 %, and 20.65 % respectively to the degradation process. By employing mass spectrometry and density functional theory, a proposed pathway for PFOA degradation was established, effectively reducing the toxicity associated with its degradation byproducts. This study provides innovative insights into membrane-based water treatment technologies that effectively tackle both membrane fouling mitigation and PFOA degradation.

Abstract:Ultrafiltration (UF) has been widely used in water and advanced sewage treatment. Unfortunately, membrane fouling is still the main obstacle to further improvement in the system. Fe (III) salt, a type of traditional coagulant, is often applied to mitigate UF membrane fouling. However, low molecule organic weight cannot be effectively removed, thus the water quality after single coagulation treatment does not effectively meet the standard of subsequent water reuse during secondary effluent treatment. Recently, it has been found that potassium ferrate (Fe (VI)) has multiple functions of oxidation, sterilization and coagulation, with other studies proving its good performance in organics removal and membrane fouling mitigation. However, the respective contributions of oxidation and coagulation/adsorption have not yet been fully understood. The oxidation and coagulation/adsorption effects of Fe (VI) during membrane fouling mitigation were investigated here. The oxidation effect of Fe (VI) was the main reason for organics with the MW of 8–20 kDa removal, and its coagulation/adsorption mainly accounted for the smaller amounts of molecular organics removed. The oxidation of Fe (VI) was the main method for overcoming membrane fouling in the initial filtration; it largely alleviated the standard blockage. The formation of a cake layer transformed the main membrane fouling alleviation mechanism from oxidation to coagulation/adsorption and further removed smaller amounts of molecule organics with the increase of filtration cycles and Fe (VI) dosages. The main fouling mechanism altered from standard blocking and cake filtration to only cake filtration after Fe (VI) treatment. Overall, the mechanism of the oxidation and coagulation/adsorption of Fe (VI) were differentiated, and would provide a reference for future Fe (VI) pretreatment in UF membrane fouling control during water and wastewater treatments.

However, the efficiency of flotation is highly dependent on the ability of the preceding coagulation/flocculation process to form flocculated algae flocs. This study aims to improve the Microcystis aeruginosa flotation efficiency from algae cell and organic matter aspects by applying Fe(II)-regulated pretreatment enhanced Al coagulation process. The ability of the C/F/F process to remove cyanobacterial cells can be enhanced from 8% to 99% at a Fe(II) dose of 30 μM. The Al dose needed can be reduced by more than half while achieving successful flotation. The introduced Fe(II) after KMnO4 can not only realize moderate pre-oxidation of cyanobacterial cells, but also form in-situ Fe(III). The DOC value can also be decreased significantly due to the formation of in-situ Fe(III), which is more efficient in dissolved organic matter (DOM) removal compared with pre-formed Fe(III). In addition, the gradually hydrolyzed in-situ Fe(III) can facilitate the hydrolysis of Al as a dual-coagulant and promote the clustering and cross-linking of Al hydrolyzates, which can enhance the formation of size-controlled algae flocs. Finally, the size-controlled algae flocs can be effectively floated by the bubbles released in the flotation process due to the efficient collision and attachment between flocs and bubbles. Therefore, the efficient flotation of algae cell and organic matter can be realized by the Fe(II) regulated moderate pre-oxidation of M. aeruginosa and formation of size-controlled algae flocs.

Abstract:An innovative electro-Fenton enhanced membrane photobioreactor with satisfactory membrane fouling mitigation was constructed for microalgae harvesting. The porous carbon and carbon nanotubes hollow fiber membranes (PC-CHFMs) were used as the separation unit and cathode, simultaneously. H2O2 was generated by cathode reducing O2 in-situ, which would further produce •OH as the main oxidant by coupling H2O2 with Fe2+. The •OH could deeply remove the extracellular organic matter (EOM) deposited on the membrane surface or inside the pores. Experimental results showed that the permeate flux recovery rates of PC-CHFMs by electro-Fenton at the 18th, 29th and 41st day were 100%, 100% and 98.3%, respectively. The corresponding recovery rates by chemical cleaning at the same time were 99.8%, 81.7% and 54.4%. The stable and high permeate flux of PC-CHFMs made a great contribution to the microalgae harvesting efficiency, where the concentration factor could be 4.8 times higher than that of the control group. Filtrating superiority of PC-CHFMs was becoming more prominent with the extension of operating time. In addition, the removal efficiency of NH4+-N and TP in wastewater was approximately 100% at stable culture period.

Abstract:Ultrafiltration (UF) is extensively used for algae removal because of its ability to retain algal cells with high efficiency, but it still faces the problem of membrane fouling and low retention capacity of dissolved organics. Hence, a strategy of coagulation with chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (HTCC) enhanced by sodium percarbonate (SPC) pre-oxidation was proposed to improve the UF performance. The fouling resistances were calculated by a resistance-in-series model based on Darcy's formula, and the membrane fouling mechanism was evaluated using a pore plugging-cake filtration model. The effect of SPC-HTCC treatment on the properties of algal foulants was explored, and the result showed that the water quality was improved with the maximum removal rates of 78.8 %, 52.4 % and 79.5 % for algal cells, dissolved organic carbon and turbidity, respectively. The SPC could achieve a mild oxidation effect that degraded the electronegative organics attached to algal cells without destroying the cell integrity, making the algal pollutants easier to agglomerate through subsequent HTCC coagulation by forming larger flocs. In terms of membrane filtration, the terminal normalized flux was increased from 0.25 to 0.71, with the reversible and irreversible resistances reduced by 90.8 % and 40.2 %, individually. The synergistic treatment reduced the accumulation of algal cells and algae-derived organics on the membrane surface as inferred from the interface fouling characteristics. The interfacial free energy analysis showed that the synergistic treatment reduced the adhesion of contaminants to the membrane surface, as well as the attraction among pollutants. Overall, the proposed process has high application prospects for algae-laden water purification.

Abstract:The widespread implementation of ultrafiltration (UF) technology, which has gained popularity for drinking water treatment, has been impeded by rising operational costs and shortened membrane lifespans resulting from membrane fouling. Here, an integrated pretreatment technique combining oxidation, adsorption, and coagulation was developed using the S(IV)–Fe(II) binary activated permanganate (PM) system, S(IV)–Fe(II)/PM. The efficacy of S(IV)–Fe(II)/PM pretreatment in mitigating UF membrane fouling was investigated for various raw water sources, including lakes, rivers, and seawater. The operational parameters of S(IV)–Fe(II)/PM pretreatment were optimized, and the underlying mechanisms for fouling alleviation were explored. Relative to conventional pretreatment methods, S(IV)–Fe(II)/PM pretreatment reduced reversible fouling-induced resistance by 13%–92% and irreversible fouling-induced resistance by 11%–86%. The S(IV)–Fe(II)/PM system exhibited optimal mitigation of membrane fouling at a PM:S(IV):Fe(II) dosage ratio of 2:3:3, with G rapid × T rapid = 45948, G slow × T slow = 12480, and a settling time of 30 min (where G is the velocity gradient and T is contact time). The effectiveness of S(IV)–Fe(II)/PM pretreatment in controlling UF membrane fouling can be attributed to the following mechanisms: 1) modification of feed water quality in terms of organic compound characteristics and concentration, colloidal particle quantity and size distribution, and microbial activity and quantity; and 2) adjustment of the membrane surface deposition environment, resulting in reduced polysaccharide and protein content, particle size distribution range, and biomass, as well as alterations in physicochemical properties such as hydrophilicity and interfacial free energy. This study highlights the efficacy of S(IV)–Fe(II)/PM pretreatment in ensuring high-quality UF effluent while effectively reducing membrane fouling, especially its potential for alleviating irreversible membrane fouling.

Abstract:The membrane fouling induced by algal extracellular organic matter (EOM) remain a bottleneck in restricting ultrafiltration (UF) application during harmful algal-water treatment. In current study, the application of heat-activated peroxydisulfate (PMS) and coagulation (Aluminum chlorohydrate, PACI) on membrane fouling behavior during Chlorella-laden water treatment was investigated. The membrane fouling mechanism was analyzed using the extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Over-beek (XDLVO) theory. The results revealed that separated heat-activated PMS could enhance the filtration flux of EOM at high PMS does >0.2 mM, whereas the membrane fouling was further alleviated by combined heat-activated PMS (0.2-1.0 mM) and PACI (20 mg/L) treatment, especially at low PMS dose. Combined heat-activated PMS and PACI pretreatment could effectively increase the adhesive repulsion between membrane and foulants and reduce the cohesion free energies between organic foulants than those by separated heat-activated PMS treatment, making the initial filtration flux reduced and the cake layer looser. Moreover, the organic foulants of proteins, polysaccharides, and humic-like organics were removed. Cake formation was the major fouling mechanism when EOM was treated with/without separated heat-activated PMS treatment, whereas the membrane fouling mechanism was changed from cake layer formation to pore blocking after combined heat-activated PMS and PACI treatment. Overall, this research provided a feasible method in membrane fouling control during Chlorella -laden water treatment.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To investigate the relationship between topoisomerase II inhibitors and t(8;21) chromosomal translocation. METHODS The rearrangements of AML1 and ETO genes were detected by Southern Blot and the AML1-ETO fusion gene by nested RT-PCR combined with sequencing in K562 cells treated with etoposide (Vp16) and doxorubicin (DOX). RESULTS The rearrangements of AML1 gene were detectable after DOX treatment at concentrations of 10, 50 and 100 micro mol/L for 16 h, AML1-ETO fusion gene appeared after 50 micro mol/L DOX treatment for 48 h. CONCLUSION Induction of AML1 gene rearrangement and fusion by topoisomerase II inhibitors, represents one of the molecular mechanisms of t(8;21) chromosomal translocation.

Abstract:For a Long time, scholars of witch-hunting presented Enlightenment political reforms as a kind of ”cure” for the “craze” of witchcraft, but despite these efforts, relatively little attention was truly paid to the end of witch-hunting. Without were formulated, historians attributed changes in state policy to an emerging skepticism and rationalism within the judicial and political elites of Europe.1 At times, scholars focus upon specific, local trials in which a loss of confidence emerged among those hearing witchcraft cases, but somewhat more frequently, they examine specific regions in which, they claim, scientific values and attitudes fostered skepticism among the elites formulating policies on the crime of witchcraft.2 Although there is an undeniable validity to both approaches, their conclusions are not without controversy. Several scholars have pointed out that judicial skepticism toward the crime of witchcraft emerged even before widespread intellectual change, and they have noted that the centralization of judicial administrations led to a decrease in the number and intensity of trials well in advance of enlightened thinking.
