Abstract:Electrochemical water splitting for hydrogen production is of great significance in exploring sustainable energy for the upcoming low-carbon era, the discovery of electrocatalysts with high activity and inexpensive is highly important to expedite the extremely sluggish kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, an efficient OER electrocatalyst was designed by doping trace Fe into Ni2P via a simple structural transformation. The crystal structure and surface chemical state analysis demonstrated the introduction of Fe dopant and the successful formation of the host Ni2P. As-prepared Fe-Ni2P microspheres greatly optimized the intrinsic activity of the active site and accelerated the mass transfer rate. Intriguingly, the electrochemical tests certified that trace Fe doping can increase the activity of nickel phosphide more significantly. High valence state transition from NiP bond to NiO bond was clearly observed, suggesting the new active species can be easily formed during OER. This article provides a trace Fe doping strategy for the study of efficient electrocatalysts to improve the kinetics of OER.

Abstract:Designing high-activity electrocatalysts to enhance the slow multielectron-transfer process of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of great importance for hydrogen generation. Here, we employ hydrothermal and subsequent heat-treatment strategies to acquire nanoarrays-structured NiO/NiCo 2 O 4 heterojunction anchored Ni foam (NiO/NiCo 2 O 4 /NF) as efficient materials for catalyzing the OER in an alkaline electrolyte. Density functional theory (DFT) results demonstrate that NiO/NiCo 2 O 4 /NF exhibits a smaller overpotential than those of single NiO/NF and NiCo 2 O 4 /NF owing to interface-triggered numerous interface charge transfer. Moreover, the superior metallic characteristics of NiO/NiCo 2 O 4 /NF further enhance its electrochemical activity toward OER. Specifically, NiO/NiCo 2 O 4 /NF delivered a current density of 50 mA cm −2 at an overpotential of 336 mV with a Tafel slope of 93.2 mV dec −1 for the OER, which are comparable with those of commercial RuO 2 (310 mV and 68.8 mV dec −1 ). Further, an overall water splitting system is preliminarily constructed via using a Pt net as cathode and NiO/NiCo 2 O 4 /NF as anode. The water electrolysis cell performs an operating voltage of 1.670 V at 20 mA cm −2 , which outperform the Pt net||IrO 2 couple assembled two-electrode electrolyzer (1.725 V at 20 mA cm −2 ). This study proposes an efficient route to acquire multicomponent catalysts with rich interfaces for water electrolysis.

Insight into Fe Activating One-Dimensional Α-Ni(oh)2 Nanobelts for Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Development of high-efficiency and inexpensive oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts is highly desirable for water electrolysis devices and rechargeable metal-air batteries. Herein, we report novel one-dimensional (1D) Fe-doped alpha-Ni(OH)(2) nanobelts as OER-active electrocatalysts. In-depth characterizations revealed that Fe atoms are incorporated into the lattice of Ni(OH)(2), resulting in the strong electron interaction with active Ni sites. Moreover, a contraction of Ni-O bond distance induced by Fe is revealed by operando X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy under OER working condition, which leads to a near-optimized adsorption of oxygen intermediates. Consequently, the Fe-doped alpha-Ni(OH)(2) nanobelts deliver significantly promoted OER activity in alkaline solutions with a low OER overpotential of 236 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) along with good stability. This work provides a strategy for developing efficiently non-noble metal catalysts, gives insights to the Fe doping effect and the dynamic evolution of disturbed atomic and electronic structure of Ni active sites.

Abstract:Exploring high-active catalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is paramount for efficient and eco-friendly conversion of renewable electricity to hydrogen fuels. In this study, we report a new strategy to significantly enhance the OER activity of Ni3Se4 nanochains via growth of uniformly vertical FeOOH ultrathin nanoneedles on the surface. The as-prepared catalyst demonstrates splendid OER performance with a low overpotential of 249.0 mV for driving a current density of 10 mA cm-2, yielding a small Tafel slope of 46 mV dec-1. After continuous operation of 10 h, a tiny degeneration of 4.0% is afforded, evidencing the excellent durability of the catalyst. On the basis of electrochemical measurement together with theoretical analysis, we attribute the boosted OER kinetics to the synergistic effect of electron, geometry and interface, concretely, two main reasons should be emphasized: 1) the complementary adsorption/desorption nature of nickel and iron leads to optimized Gibbs free energy; 2) redistribution of localized π-symmetry electrons at the interface endows the favorable adsorption/desorption for the oxygenated species. We anticipate that our work would push boundaries for the fabrication of high-performance transition metal- and selenium-based electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Development of efficient and reliable transition metal-based oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts has profound implications to achieve carbon-neutral economy in the future. Herein, a novel hybrid OER catalyst of heterogeneous FeNi2S4/Ni3S4 nanoparticles embedded CNT networks (FeNi2S4/Ni3S4@CNT) was prepared by a facile one-step hydrothermal reaction. The ultrafine heterogeneous nanoparticles of FeNi2S4 and Ni3S4 embedded CNT can expose abundant active sites and enhance the electrochemically active area; the electronic structure modulated by the bi-metallization of FeNi2S4 via partial substitution of Ni with Fe; the robust contact between conductive FeNi2S4 and Ni3S4 nanoparticles with abundant active sites on the surface and the CNT network with high conductivity can effectively promote the electron transfer; the 3D network with rich nanopores is beneficial to electrolyte penetration and gas release. These above merits and synergistic effects of FeNi2S4 and Ni3S4 endow the catalyst superior OER performances with an ultralow overpotential of 247 mV for the current density of 10 mA cm−2, a low Tafel slope of 53.7 mV dec−1 and remarkable durability over 20 h, surpassing those of commercial OER catalyst RuO2. This work provides a synergistic OER boosting strategy via bi-metallization, heterogeneous nanoparticle distribution and conductive skeleton to develop non-precious-based electrocatalyst by a facile one-pot synthesis method.

Abstract:The poor conductivities and instabilities of accessible nickel oxyhydroxides hinder their use as oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts. Herein, we constructed Fe-NiOOH-OV-600, an Fe-doped nickel oxide hydroxide with abundant oxygen vacancies supported on nickel foam (NF), using a hydrothermal method and an electrochemical activation strategy involving 600 cycles of cyclic voltammetry, assisted by the precipitation/dissolution equilibrium of ferrous sulfide (FeS) in the electrolyte. This two-step method endows the catalyst with abundant Fe-containing active sites while maintaining the ordered structure of nickel oxide hydroxide (NiOOH). Characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that synergy between trace amounts of the Fe dopant and the oxygen vacancies not only promotes the generation of reconstructed active layers but also optimizes the electronic structure and adsorption capacity of the active sites. Consequently, the as-prepared Fe-NiOOH-OV-600 delivered large current densities of 100 and 1000 mA cm-2 for the OER at overpotentials of only 253 and 333 mV in 1 mol/L KOH. Moreover, the catalyst is stable for at least 100 h at 500 mA cm-2. This work provides insight into the design of efficient transition-metal-based electrocatalysts for the OER.

Abstract:The exploitation of the superior oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts is of great paramount importance to the investigation of developing hydrogen production from water splitting to alleviate the energy crisis. Herein, Fe3+ ion doped NiS2 for OER electrocatalysts obtained from a metal-organic framework (MOF) as a self-template, with the graphitic phase carbon nitride (g-C3N4) as a chain armor, was prepared by the two-step solvothermal-pyrolysis method. The MOF-derived Fe–NiS2@g-C3N4 composite achieves a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at a tiny OER overpotential (280 mV) and shows good stability in duration tests over 60 h. Compared with the undoped sample, the overpotential is significantly lower by 60 mV and the stability is substantially improved. In this study, two strategies, iron ion doping and g-C3N4 coating, were implemented to target the defects of NiS2, promoting its catalytic activity and achieving a significant improvement in stability at the cost of a bit of activity. Balancing activity and stability maximized has been achieved by our work. This study presents a potential approach to improve the catalyst activity and stability in an integrated strategy.

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the efficiency limiting half-reaction in water electrolysis for hydrogen production, which necessitates the use of an efficient and cost-effective catalyst. Nonmetal and metal element codoping is an effective way to profoundly modulate the electronic structure of transition metal oxide catalysts and the interaction with oxygen (O) adsorbates, which are crucial forOER efficiency. Herein, a sulfur (S), phosphorus (P) and iron (Fe) element codoped nickel oxide (NiO), denoted as S,P-NiO(Fe), was prepared as an OER catalyst, wherein the incorporation of P and Fe played significant roles in regulating the electronic structure of the NiO motif and reducing the activation barrier of the rate-determining step (RDS) during the OER process, thus substantially enhancing the catalytic capability. Concretely, the S,P-NiO(Fe) electrode displayed an overpotential of 230 mV at an OER response of 50 mA cm −2 , a low Tafel slope of 64 mV dec −1 and robust catalytic stability. Theoretical calculations showed that the incorporation of P and Fe downshifted the d-band center position, which mediated the adsorptive interaction strengths of O-intermediates and reduced the activation barrier of the RDS (from *O to *OOH), whereupon the low energy pathway led to rapid OER kinetics. This work offers a viable tactic to improve the OER catalytic capability of metal oxides through metal and nonmetal element codoping.

Abstract:Highly active Fe‐NiOOH obtained from Fe‐NiC2O4 precursor via in situ electrochemical oxidation demonstrates outstanding OER activity with a low overpotential of 220 mV at a current density of 100 mA cm−2. Water electrolysis using renewable electricity is a promising strategy for high‐purity hydrogen production. To realize the practical application of water electrolysis, an electrocatalyst with high redox properties and low cost is essential for enhancing the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction. Herein, we fabricated Fe‐doped nickel oxalate (Fe‐NiC2O4) directly grown on nickel (Ni) foam as an efficient electrocatalyst for the alkaline oxygen evolution reaction using a facile one‐step hydrothermal method. Fe‐NiC2O4 served as a precursor for obtaining highly active Fe‐doped Ni oxyhydroxide (Fe‐NiOOH) via in situ electrochemical oxidation. Consequently, 0.75Fe‐NiOOH was demonstrated to be the optimal electrocatalyst, exhibiting outstanding oxygen evolution reaction activity with a low overpotential of 220 mV at a current density of 100 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of 20.5 mV dec−1. Furthermore, Fe‐NiOOH maintained its oxygen evolution reaction activity without performance decay during long‐term electrochemical measurements, owing to the phase transformation from nickel oxyhydroxide (NiOOH) to γ‐NiOOH (gamma nickel oxyhydroxide). These performances significantly surpass those of recently reported transition‐metal‐based electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The electrochemical decomposition of water plays a critical role in green and sustainable energy. However, the development of efficient and low-cost non-noble metal catalysts to overcome the high potential of the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is still challenging. In this work, high OER activity electrocatalysts were obtained by doping Co/Fe bimetals into Ni3S2 (CF-NS) via a simple single-step hydrothermal method by adjusting the ratio of bimetal doping. A series of characterization revealed that the introduction of Co/Fe co-dopant increased the active sites and improved the electroconductibility, while the electronic structure of Ni3S2 was optimized. Meanwhile, Fe-induced high valence Ni contributed to the production of the OER active phase NiOOH. The unique dendritic crystal morphology facilitated the disclosure of the active sites and expansion of mass transfer channels. The optimized sample required a low overpotential of 146 mV to excite a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in 1.0 M KOH solution. The optimized sample also operated stably for at least 86 h. In sum, the proposed method looks very promising for designing efficient, stable, and low-cost non-precious metal catalysts with high conductivity and multiple active sites, useful for future syntheses of transition metal sulfide catalysts.

Abstract:Accessible and superior electrocatalysts to overcome the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are pivotal for sustainable and low-cost hydrogen production through electrocatalytic water splitting. The iron and nickel oxohydroxide complexes are regarded as the most promising OER electrocatalyst attributed to their inexpensive costs, easy preparation, and robust stability. In particular, the Fe-doped NiOOH is widely deemed to be superior constituents for OER in an alkaline environment. However, the facile construction of robust Fe-doped NiOOH electrocatalysts is still a great challenge. Herein, we report the facile construction of Fe-doped NiOOH on Ni(OH)2 hierarchical nanosheet arrays grown on nickel foam (FeNi@NiA) as efficient OER electrocatalysts through a facile in-situ electrochemical activation of FeNi-based Prussian blue analogues (PBA) derived from Ni(OH)2. The resultant FeNi@NiA heterostructure shows high intrinsic activity for OER due to the modulation of the overall electronic energy state and the electrical conductivity. Importantly, the electrochemical measurement revealed that FeNi@NiA exhibits a low overpotential of 240 mV at 10 mA/cm2 with a small Tafel slope of 62 mV dec-1 in 1.0 M KOH, outperforming the commercial RuO2 electrocatalysts for OER.

Abstract:The design of efficient, environmentally friendly, stable and low-cost oxygen evolution electrocatalyst is the technical difficulty to realize the commercial application of water electrolysis. Here, we have developed a novel 3D electrocatalyst to grow Ni3Se4/Fe(PO3)2 composite on nickel foam (NF) in a short time of 80 s by a simple electrodeposition method, which not only effectively prevents the agglomeration of Ni3Se4, but also reduces the size of Fe(PO3)2 particles from micron level to nanometer level, exposes more electroactive sites. The Fe(PO3)2 with low crystalline structure and the crystalline Ni3Se4 can form a unique heterostructure to produce strong electron coupling and synergistic effect for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media, which effectively improves the intrinsic activity of Ni/FeOOH active sites. The Ni3Se4/Fe(PO3)2/NF composites as catalysts can achieve a low overpotential of 188 mV in alkaline media at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and a small Tafel slope of 36.8 mV dec-1, exhibiting excellent OER catalytic activity and stability.

Abstract:Self-supported nanoparticle electrocatalysts with multiple active sites and porosity have a bright prospect in the direction of oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this work, a three-dimensional (3D) porous nanoparticle Fe-NiTe2/Ni2P is presented, which exhibits outstanding electrocatalytic activity and excellent stability. Specifically, the OER activity of Fe-NiTe2/Ni2P requires only 190 mV overpotential at the current density of 10 mA cm-2, which is the first time the overpotential of tellurides gets within 200 mV. It is because the rough porous 3D structure leads to a large number of exposed active sites, allowing enough channels to release oxygen and perform mass exchange. In addition, Fe doping can modulate the electronic structure of the catalyst, accelerate the electron transfer, and thus improve the activity of the catalyst. The catalyst remained stable in 1 M KOH solution for 22 h, indicating that it has strong corrosion resistance. In this work, a simple, efficient, low-cost and corrosion resistant iron-doped transition metal telluride electrocatalyst has been synthesized, which provides a valuable way for the study of water electrolysis.

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a key half-reaction in renewable energy-related technologies, such as the electrocatalytic water splitting process and carbon dioxide reduction reaction. Unfortunately, developing an efficient and stable electrocatalyst to overcome the sluggish kinetics of OER remains a challenge. Herein, uniformly dispersed NiO and FeNi 3 alloy nanoparticles anchored on N-doped porous carbon (NC) electrocatalysts were designed and synthesized by a facile two-step calcination strategy. The influence of calcination temperature and the molar ratio of Ni:Fe on electrocatalytic OER activity was particularly studied. With an optimal calcination temperature and Ni/Fe ratio, FeNi 3 @NC-800 exhibited outstanding OER performance with a low overpotential of 242 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and a small Tafel slope of 34.7 mV dec −1 in alkaline media. The enhanced OER activity of FeNi 3 @NC-800 is mainly due to the synergistic effect of FeNi 3 alloy nanoparticles with NC and the high electrical conductivity between FeNi 3 and NC. This research will offer a new perspective on the construction of efficient and stable non-noble metal OER electrocatalyst.

Abstract:The exploration of catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) using the advantages of interface engineering is an attractive strategy for achieving highly efficient electrochemical water splitting. In this study, Fe-doped multiphase nickel hydroxide (Fe-α,β-Ni(OH) 2 ) was successfully prepared with a unique interface by modulating the Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ ratios in a feasible one-step hydrothermal process. This multiphase catalyst powder significantly contributed to the OER performance, with a low overpotential of 259 mV at 10 mA cm −2 (grown on carbon cloth substrates, 260 mV at 100 mA cm −2 ) and excellent catalytic stability during the 70-h OER process under extreme conditions. Based on the experimental and theoretical results, the unique interface between the Fe-α-Ni(OH) 2 and Fe-β-Ni(OH) 2 phases optimized the adsorption free energies of oxygen-containing intermediates and accelerated the formation of Ni 3+ active species during the OER, leading to a large electrochemically active surface area (ECSA), which considerably enhanced the OER performance. This study provides novel insight into interface engineering and the design of high-performance OER catalysts based on earth-abundant transition-metal elements.

A simple postsynthetic in-situ cation exchange strategy to construct Fe-doped Ni 3 Se 4 nanoarray for enhanced oxygen evolution reaction

Abstract:For industrial high-purity green hydrogen production, it is necessary to develop efficient, economical and stable non-precious metal-based alkaline media oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts. In this study, a simple stepwise synthesis strategy was proposed to construct a hierarchical MOF-based Prussian blue analogue by Ni-BPDC and derived from it to grow Fe-doped Ni 3 Se 4 in situ on nickel foam (Fe-Ni 3 Se 4 /NF) as an efficient and stable alkaline OER electrocatalyst. Fe doping enables better modulation of the electronic structure of Ni 3 Se 4 and increases the number of active sites and electrochemical surface area to improve the OER activity. Fe-Ni 3 Se 4 /NF exhibits remarkable electrocatalytic performance in 1 M KOH with low overpotential (211 mV at 10 mA cm -2 ) and small Tafel slope (34.44 mV dec -1 ), which is superior to that of commercial RuO 2 catalysts. Its electrochemical characteristics are stable at 10 mA cm -2 for more than 24 h, making it a viable non-precious metal-based electrocatalyst for alkaline OER. This synthetic approach could open up new possibilities for the fabrication of MOF-based hierarchical Prussian blue analogs as well as derivatives to be oriented for applications in various fields.

Abstract:Developing cost-effective, highly efficient, and durable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts is critical for improving the efficiency of hydrogen production from water splitting. Herein, we reported a novel OER catalyst composed of NiFe layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) nanosheets on NiCo2O4 nanowires (NiCo2O4@NiFe-LDH) supported on carbon cloth through the hydrothermal method and subsequent electrodeposition. The three-dimension (3D) hierarchical architecture facilitates the diffusion of electrolyte ions and O2 release. Experimental results demonstrate that the electrons transfer from the highly conductive NiCo2O4 nanowires to the NiFe-LDH sheets, which could expedite the charge transfer significantly. Importantly, the tunable adsorption/desorption nature of the oxygenated intermediates was achieved through the local delocalization of spin state at the heterointerface through the bridging O2-. Benefiting from the heterostructure and synergistic effects between different components, the optimized NiCo2O4@NiFe-LDH-2 exhibits excellent OER performance with a low overpotential of 270 mV at 50 mA cm−2, a small Tafel slope of 74 mV dec−1 and a good durability for 25 h in 1 M KOH. This work provides a novel approach to fabricate advanced OER catalysts and is expected to be extended to other materials for energy conversion applications.

Elevating the d-Band Center of Ni 3 S 2 Nanosheets by Fe Incorporation to Boost the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Many attempts have been made to enhance the relatively poor electrochemical activity of Ni3S2 for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) by elevating the d-band center. Unfortunately, only limited success has been encountered thus far. Owning to the lower electronegativity and one less 3d electron relative to Ni, Fe shows great potentials in upshifting the overall d-band center of Ni3S2 when incorporating into its crystal structures. Herein, to enhance the intrinsic activity by elevating the d-band center, Ni3S2 nanosheets incorporated with suitable Fe content have been fabricated by a facile one-step solvothermal method. The obtained Fe-incorporated Ni3S2 catalyst exhibits an outstanding OER performance in alkaline media, only requiring 244 mV overpotential (with a reduction of 210 mV compared to Ni3S2) at 50 mA cm-2 in 1 M KOH and without obvious degradation after sustaining for a 60 h test at a voltage above 1.5 V. Ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations consistently demonstrate that the superior performance of Fe-incorporated Ni3S2 is attributed to the upshift of the d-band center on neutralizing the electron densities of Ni, which optimize greatly the adsorption energy of the intermediate (OOH*) in the rate-determining Volmer step.

Unveiling Role of Sulfate Ion in Nickel‐Iron (oxy)Hydroxide with Enhanced Oxygen‐Evolving Performance

Abstract:The rational design of effective catalysts for sluggish oxygen evolution reactions (OERs) is desired but challenging. Nickel-iron (NiFe) (oxy)hydroxides are promising pre-electrocatalysts for alkaline OER. However, OER performances are limited by the slow reconstruction process to generate active species of high-valance NiFe oxyhydroxides. In this work, a sulfate ion (SO42−) modulated strategy is developed to boost the OER activity of NiFe (oxy)hydroxide by accelerating the electrochemical reconstruction of pre-catalyst and stabilizing the reaction intermediate of OOH* during OER. The SO42− decorated NiFe (oxy)hydroxide catalyst (NF-S0.15) is fabricated via scalable anodization of NiFe foam in a thiourea-dissolved electrolyte. The experimental and theoretical investigations demonstrate the dual effect of SO42− on improving OER performances. SO42− leaching is favorable for the electrochemical reconstruction to form active NiFeOOH under OER condition. Simultaneously, the residual SO42− adsorbed on surface can stabilize the intermediate of OOH*, and thus enhance the OER performances. As expected, NF-S0.15 delivers an ultralow overpotential of 234 mV to reach the current density of 50 mA cm−2, a fast OER kinetics (27.7 mV dec−1), and a high stability for more than 100 h. This unique insights into anionic modification could inspire the development of advanced electrocatalysts for efficient OER.

Abstract:Electrochemical water splitting is one of the potential approaches for making renewable energy production and storage viable. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER), as a sluggish four-electron electrochemical reaction, has to overcome high overpotential to accomplish overall water splitting. Therefore, developing low-cost and highly active OER catalysts is the key for achieving efficient and economical water electrolysis. In this work, Fe-doped NiMoO4 was synthesized and evaluated as the OER catalyst in alkaline medium. Fe3+ doping helps to regulate the electronic structure of Ni centers in NiMoO4, which consequently promotes the catalytic activity of NiMoO4. The overpotential to reach a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) is 299 mV in 1 m KOH for the optimal Ni0.9Fe0.1MoO4, which is 65 mV lower than that for NiMoO4. Further, the catalyst also shows exceptional performance stability during a 2 h chronopotentiometry testing. Moreover, the real catalytically active center of Ni0.9Fe0.1MoO4 is also unraveled based on the ex situ characterizations. These results provide new alternatives for precious-metal-free catalysts for alkaline OER and also expand the Fe-doping-induced synergistic effect towards performance enhancement to new catalyst systems.
