Impact of a National Virtual Oncology Course on Medical Student Competency and Interest in Oncology

Abstract:Globally, surveys have identified that medical learners of all levels perceive their oncology instruction to be inadequate. To address these gaps, we systematically developed and implemented the Oncology National Course for Advocacy, Research, and Education (ONCARE), a novel, nationally organized virtual course available to all Canadian medical students and evaluated its impact on oncology competency and interest. ONCARE was designed utilizing Kern's Six-Step Model for Curriculum Development. Components of ONCARE included lectures, career panels, and a mentorship program. Pre-course and post-course survey responses were collected to determine course impact on oncology knowledge and interest. Between October 2023 and March 2024, ONCARE enrolled 235 students representing 14 Canadian medical schools. One hundred forty (60%) students enrolled reported having only 0 to 10 h of formal oncology instruction. Baseline interest in a career in oncology was high (mean Likert score 3.9/5) and remained unchanged following course completion. ONCARE increased both self-perceived knowledge in clinical oncology (mean Likert score 3.9/5 vs 2.9/5, p < 0.001) and confidence in oncology communication skills (mean Likert score 3.6/5 vs 3.1/5, p < 0.001). Ninety-seven percent of students were satisfied with the course (mean Likert score 4.6/5). The implementation of ONCARE as a proof-of-concept initiative builds upon previous educational interventions in oncology and highlights important principles for the development of related initiatives. Future work will target greater interdisciplinary and multinational collaboration as well as long-term follow-up of the ONCARE cohort.

Abstract:Background: Previous graduate students and postdoctoral associates from the University of Florida Health Cancer Center, in partnership with the University of Florida Student Science Training Program, implemented a cooperative learning curriculum, providing high school students with a broad overview of cancer topics over six weeks over the summer. However, the ongoing shift in education and training delivery initially necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic has given rise to many discussions surrounding student autonomy and satisfaction. Furthermore, adapting hybrid and distance learning styles has notably influenced student-led collaboration and critical thinking skills. Here, we report on an update of experiences gleaned from the modified curriculum of this course to accommodate hybrid and cooperative teaching. Methods: This pre-post longitudinal observational study evaluated modifications to a cancer biology and therapeutics course. Student performance was assessed using surveys administered before and after the course to determine effectiveness. Results: Student performance tracked over a 7-year period indicated improved cumulative grade averages after modifying the previous curriculum. Post-assessment analysis revealed significant improvements in student benchmark understanding, notably in their ability to define cancer in one sentence (p = 0.0407), identify cancer therapies (p = 0.0040), and recognize cancer hallmarks (p < 0.0001). An increased trend in median response to the likelihood of pursuing cancer research (p = 0.8793) and the possibility of pursuing cancer research (p = 0.4874) were also observed, although not statistically significant. Moreover, feedback from participating students indicated that "the educational activities at the end of class (e.g., escape room, case studies)" and "learning about cancer and getting to work in groups…" the curriculum fostered a positive educational learning environment. Conclusion: Students generally held a positive perception of the course. Post-assessment analysis revealed decreasing trends in students' perception of course difficulty compared to their expectations in the pre-assessment. Constructive feedback centered around fostering collaborative environments, with an observed increase in learner autonomy towards the end of the course, as evidenced by students' growing comfort in leading group case studies and conducting research on topics. We hope that future course directors engage actively and incorporate practical clinical examples for students, especially when introducing or discussing complex issues like cancer.
Impact of a Cancer Health Education Curriculum Among Milwaukee Public High School Students

Abstract:In Milwaukee and nationwide, cancer incidence, late-stage diagnosis, and mortality are notably higher among some racial/ethnic populations. Cancer education has the potential to impact cancer burden and reduce cancer disparities. In particular, the addition of a service-learning component to academic curriculums has been shown to improve student learning as well as positively impact the surrounding community. This study implemented a cancer health education curriculum (CHEC) at a Milwaukee public high school with the goal of addressing cancer knowledge, fear and fatalism beliefs, and risk behaviors. The curriculum included interactive learning sessions and a service-learning final project. Five-hundred twenty-one students also completed pre- and post-surveys assessing cancer knowledge, fear and fatalism, risk behaviors, cancer-related communication, and a qualitative question asking what they hoped to gain (pre) or did gain (post) from the course. Results indicate (1) a significant improvement in cancer knowledge ( p < 0.0001), (2) a decrease in cancer fear and fatalism ( p < 0.0001), (3) an increase in fruit consumption ( p < 0.0001), (4) a decrease in screen time ( p = 0.0004), and (5) an increase in how often students spoke with their family about cancer ( p < 0.0001). Qualitative data reflect important gains such as increased interest in sharing their knowledge about cancer with their community. Providing cancer education and leveraging a service-learning requirement led to notable changes in high school students' cancer knowledge, fear and fatalism, and risk behaviors. Students also communicated more with family/friends about cancer. Such efforts could have broader implications for student, family, and community cancer burden.

Abstract:e12515 Background: Clinical practice guidelines drive treatment decision making in HR-positive, HER2-negative early breast cancer with a high risk of recurrence. Understanding is necessary to incorporate the guidelines into practice and improve patient care. To address this gap, two global educational activities were developed that consisted of a 1-hour live streaming virtual meeting with a 45-minute online enduring activity and a 30-minute panel discussion. The objective of this study was to assess the educational impact of the online educational activities. Methods: To assess educational impact a repeated-pairs pre-/post-assessment study design using 6 knowledge/competence questions, in which everyone served as their own control. A paired samples t-test assessed mean differences in the average number of correct responses to the matched pre-/post-assessment questions, and a McNemar’s test assessed significance of improvement across core learning topics from pre- to post-assessment. P values <.05 are statistically significant. Confidence was also assessed using a pre/post confidence question. The activities launched in March 2023 and data was collected till January 2024. Results: 385 oncologists from the US and outside of the US who answered all the pre-/post-assessment questions were included in the analysis. Each assessment question was mapped to an activity learning objective. The learning objectives were grouped into three core topics. All core topics showed a significant improvement in education. Conclusions: These online activities resulted in a significant improvement of oncologists’ knowledge and competence related to the utilization of clinical practice guidelines. Confidence in understanding the implications of the latest guidelines also showed a statistically significant improvement. However, there is still a need for education in a significant percentage of oncologists on this topic. [Table: see text]

Abstract:PURPOSE: This was an evaluation of an innovation in curriculum content and delivery within undergraduate nursing education in the UK. Its purpose was to investigate the effect on knowledge, attitudes and confidence in delivering cancer care.METHODS: The study design was a pre-test post-test survey design with a comparison group. Participants were two cohorts of undergraduate nursing students (n(intervention) = 84, n(comparison) = 91). The intervention cohort were exposed to a new 3.5 day programme of cancer education, coproduced with patients, carers and health professionals, which focused on cancer as a life changing long-term condition. The comparison cohort had been exposed to a 2 day programme produced by a lecturer.RESULTS: Following exposure to the new model for the delivery of undergraduate nurse cancer education, the intervention cohort demonstrated good overall knowledge of the impact of cancer, more positive attitudes towards cancer treatment and more confidence in their ability to deliver cancer care. Attitudes were more positive and confidence in ability to support cancer patients at all stages of the cancer journey were greater than in the comparison group. Insights gained into the cancer patient and carer perspectives were highly valued.CONCLUSIONS: This study has found that a new model for the delivery of cancer education focusing on survivorship and delivered in partnership with patients, carers and clinicians, may improve knowledge, attitudes and confidence in the delivery of cancer care. Further work is now needed, using a more robust experimental design, to investigate the generalisability of the results to other education programs.

Abstract:To improve cancer care in Indiana, a telementoring program using the Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) model was introduced in September 2019 to promote best-practice cancer prevention, screening, and survivorship care by primary care providers (PCPs). The aim of this study was to evaluate the program's educational outcomes in its pilot year, using Moore's Evaluation Framework for Continuing Medical Education and focusing on the program's impact on participants' knowledge, confidence, and professional practice. We collected data in 22 semi-structured interviews (13 PCPs and 9 non-PCPs) and 30 anonymous one-time surveys (14 PCPs and 16 non-PCPs) from the program participants (hub and spoke site members), as well as from members of the target audience who did not participate. In the first year, average attendance at each session was 2.5 PCPs and 12 non-PCP professionals. In spite of a relatively low PCP participation, the program received very positive satisfaction scores, and participants reported improvements in knowledge, confidence, and practice. Both program participants and target audience respondents particularly valued three features of the program: its conversational format, the real-life experiences gained, and the support received from a professional interdisciplinary community. PCPs reported preferring case discussions over didactics. Our results suggest that the Cancer ECHO program has benefits over other PCP-targetted cancer control interventions and could be an effective educational means of improving cancer control capacity among PCPs and others. Further study is warranted to explain the discrepancies among study participants' perceptions of the program's strengths and the relatively low PCP participation before undertaking a full-scale effectiveness study.
Exploring Why Cancer Patients Engage Into Medical Education

Abstract:Background and Objectives Patients are recruited to act as educators, sharing experiences of their illness to facilitate active student learning. At our institution, cancer patient educators have been recruited to participate in a weekly teaching session for students. Our study was designed to assess the benefits that partaking in medical education confers on patients who were treated for cancer, as well as explore their motivations for becoming educators and how we can improve their experiences in the future. Methodology Our study used a qualitative exploratory research design, with four current patient educators being selected to participate. The interviews were conducted virtually and were designed to allow patients the opportunity to provide a rich narrative of their experiences. Their accounts were transcribed using built-in transcription software and analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). IPA is an in-depth analytical method used to identify common themes between patients' experiences and explore why these themes exist. Results Four superordinate themes, each with its subthemes were identified following analysis of patient transcripts: the perceived success of the session (relationship between patient educator and facilitator, willingness of students to participate, organisation and planning of the session), motivations for becoming a patient educator (wanting to give something back, personal attributes making them suitable for the role and improving experiences of future patients), perceived benefits of engaging in medical education (improvement in mental health and engaging with medical students) and suggested improvements for the session (logistics and recruitment). Conclusions Being a cancer patient educator offers significant benefits for patients' well-being, particularly in mental health. Cancer patient educators are motivated by the need to give something back to the staff and institution where they were treated. The educators also referred to improving care for future patients by educating students about negative experiences they encountered and how these could have been avoided. Finally, educators suggested improvements for future sessions by addressing the length of the sessions and having a formal recruitment process.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to understand gynecological cancer (GC) survivors' and their informal caregivers' perceptions about the usability of an educational resource to support their transition from primary cancer treatment into surveillance and/or recovery. After developing an empirical- and experiential-informed educational resource, we used a semi-structured questioning process to understand GC survivors and their caregivers' perceptions about its usability. Data were collected via online focus groups or 1:1 interviews that were audio recorded and transcribed. We used thematic analysis to analyze the data. Ten participants who were survivors or informal caregivers of cervical, ovarian, or uterine/endometrial cancer participated in two rounds of data collection. We grouped qualitative data into two themes: (1) reputable, relevant, and accessible education reduces uncertainty and promotes connection, and (2) individualized delivery of education provided by trusted cancer clinicians. The transition from treatment to surveillance is a challenging time for which reputable, relevant, and accessible educational resources are useful to facilitate an understanding about and self-management of survivorship-related concerns. Survivors and caregivers look to clinicians to provide reputable education to address their needs. This education should be diverse in content and referred to repeatedly throughout the cancer trajectory.

Abstract:The unprecedented and growing number of cancer survivors requires comprehensive quality care that includes cancer surveillance, symptom management, and health promotion to reduce morbidity and mortality and improve quality of life. However, coordinated and sustainable survivorship care has been challenged by barriers at multiple levels. We outline the survivorship programs at Northwestern Medicine and the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center that have evolved over two decades. Our current survivorship clinics comprise STAR (Survivors Taking Action and Responsibility) for adult survivors of childhood cancers; Adult Specialty Survivorship for survivors of breast, colorectal and testicular cancers, lymphomas, and leukemias; and Gynecologic Oncology Survivorship. Care provision models align with general, disease/treatment-specific, and integrated survivorship models, respectively. Reimbursement for survivorship services has been bolstered by institutional budget allocations. We have standardized survivor education, counseling, and referrals through electronic health record (EHR)-integrated survivorship care plan (SCP) templates that incorporate partial auto-population. We developed EHR-integrated data collection tools (e.g., dashboards; SmartForm, and registry) to facilitate data analytics, personalized patient referrals, and reports to the Commission on Cancer (CoC). We report to the CoC on SCP delivery, dietitian encounters, and DEXA scans. For the last decade, our Cancer Survivorship Institute has aligned the efforts of clinicians, researchers, and educators. The institute promotes evidence-based care, high-impact research, and state-of-the-science educational programs for professionals, survivors, and the community. Future plans include expansion of clinical services and funding for applied research centered on the unique needs of post-treatment cancer survivors.

Abstract:Background: Evaluations of continuing professional development programs typically focus on short-term knowledge and skill acquisition. There is a need for more comprehensive program evaluation methods that assess a broader range of impacts and can elicit how and why these outcomes occurred. We conducted a qualitative study to investigate the impacts of a multidisciplinary, online health professional postgraduate degree and to gain insights into the factors that led to these impacts. Methods: Participants were graduates of the University of Melbourne's Master of Cancer Sciences who could participate in an online interview. Semi-structured, qualitative interviews were conducted exploring a broad range of impacts, including changes in professional practice and career trajectory since graduation, and how the degree influenced these impacts. Data were analysed inductively. Results: Fifteen participants (female: 80%, 31-50 years old: 67%) from a range of professions were interviewed. A number of major themes were uncovered. Impacts on career trajectory included expanded career horizons (e.g. increased role diversity and complexity), and increased confidence in their professional identity. Impacts on professional practice included individual improvements in patient care and research, as well as changes in organisational practice. Factors identified as leading to these impacts were: (i) active, interactive and interprofessional learning; (ii) networking, informal mentoring, and role-modelling; and (iii) support at multiple levels. Conclusion: This study provides preliminary evidence of the positive impact of a Master of Cancer Sciences on graduate career trajectory and professional practice. In addition, the inductive methodology enabled identification of the curricular features (both planned and emergent) that influenced these impacts, facilitating potential transferability of learnings to other teaching programs.
Standardized Patient Simulation in an Oncology Symptom Management Seminar-Style Course: Prelicensure Nursing Student Outcomes

Abstract:A critical role of the professional nurse is to manage symptoms associated with cancer and its treatments. Currently, prelicensure nursing curricula lack adequate oncology content and associated opportunities for clinical application. Thus, many graduate nurses do not possess the requisite knowledge and skills required to effectively manage cancer-related symptoms upon entry to practice. The purposes of this study were to evaluate the effect of standardized patient simulation on nursing students' knowledge, confidence, and competence (objective and self-perceived) related to oncology evidence-based symptom management principles, and to determine nursing students' perceptions, satisfaction, and self-confidence with learning using standardized patient simulation in a seminar-style course. A longitudinal, one-group, convergent mixed-methods design with questionnaire variant was used. Data were collected at three time points: (T1) pre-seminar, (T2) pre-simulation, and (T3) post-simulation. A convenience sample of sixty-three senior baccalaureate nursing students in an oncology symptom management seminar participated in two standardized patient simulation scenarios. There was a significant increase in students' knowledge, confidence, and self-perceived competence over time with a large effect size. All student groups (n = 14) demonstrated objective competence in the colorectal cancer scenario and all participants, with the exception of one student group, demonstrated objective competence in the breast cancer scenario. Participants also reported positive perceptions of, a high level of satisfaction with, and self-confidence in learning with the standardized patient simulations. Qualitative themes identified included unique focus, realism, and application of knowledge. Standardized patient simulation holds promise to enhance nursing students' knowledge, confidence, and competence related to oncology evidence-based symptom management principles.

Overcoming barriers in equitable care delivery for women with gynecologic cancers: Outcomes and analysis from an educational program on health equity.

Abstract:e17581 Background: Despite advances in gynecologic cancer treatment, patients of color disproportionally face barriers to equitable care. Healthcare professional (HCP) surveys can help uncover where practice gaps remain. Here, we report results from surveys administered to HCPs during and after participation in CME/CE education on promoting health equity via incorporation of best practices and facilitating patient resources. Methods: A multidisciplinary curriculum was developed to provide education on optimal and equitable care delivery including to underserved patients. From March 8, 2023, to January 19, 2024, data were collected from HCP surveys administered during and after CME education. HCP-endorsed patient resources were provided for download to all participants. Follow-up data was collected on the impact of the education on current HCP practice and remaining barriers to change practice. Results: A total of 1106 HCPs participated in the live/online program including physicians, nurses, pharmacists, among other HCPs. Only 31% of HCPs asked frequently or always provided like-patient testimonials to underserved populations, which has been demonstrated to improve enrollment on clinical trials (n = 362). Of those completing post CME education surveys (n = 431), 53% indicated a shift from awareness to agreement with best practices, 19% increased adoption or application of best practices, and 19% education helped in another way. Top barriers to change (n = 403) cited by survey completers were acceptance of proposed strategies by peers (29%), patient adherence/compliance (25%), lack of sufficient time (23%), institutional constrains (21%), and formulary restriction (18%). Among 49 HCPs who completed a survey on the applicability of telehealth, 43% indicated telehealth would increase access to care for their underserved patients of color, 33% indicated it could help monitor patients in less time, and 33% said that telehealth could be recommended for remote patients. Barriers to telehealth included aggressive disease or need of frequent monitoring (22%), patients’ lack of computer/internet access (25%), and no/deficient regulatory environment or reimbursement for telehealth (10%). In total, 289 HCPs downloaded resources tailored to improve patient–HCP communication and increase access to available financial resources. Conclusions: Our follow-up surveys during/after completion of a large, multidisciplinary, educational program on gynecologic health equity suggests improvements in HCP perceptions of health disparities and application of best practices. There remain key but addressable barriers to equitable care for underserved patients of color. Continued education is needed on the use of like-patient testimonials and telehealth to promote access, reduce costs, and provide support to vulnerable patients.

Abstract:Introduction: A previous evaluation of a five-part accredited continuing medical education (CME) designed to inspire action for equitable cancer care amongst US-based multidisciplinary oncology care team members, showed significant improvements in relevant knowledge and confidence (pre to post activity). This study aimed to revisit the data collected in the scope of this project to identify remaining challenges in ensuring equitable cancer care is delivered to all patients, with underlying gaps in knowledge, confidence and attitude that may be addressed through future CME. Methods: A secondary analysis of data was performed on quantitative (case-based multiple-choice) responses collected from US-based HCPs who completed at least one of the five accredited CME activities that were part of the program titled "Addressing Racial Disparities in Cancer Care". Questions assessed learners' knowledge, confidence, and attitudes after exposure to the CME. Crosstabulations with chi-square statistical tests compared quantitative responses by sub-group. The analysis focused on post-CME data to identify remaining educational gaps, with the aim of informing the development of future CME programs. Results: The five-part CME education reached 1151 unique HCPs involved in cancer care, with activity participation varying between n=103 to n=433. The profession/specialty sub-group most represented in aggregated responses across the five-part CME were registered nurses specialized in hematology/oncology (n=575/1145, 50%). Across US regions, respondents were mostly located in South US (n=446/1150, 39%). A challenge in helping patients navigate socio- economic barriers to oncology care was found, with the following four related gaps affecting a portion of respondents post-CME exposure: 1) misconception that the most important determinant of treatment adherence is a patient's perceived treatment efficacy rather than optimal patient-provider communication (n=57/400, 14%), 2) sub-optimal knowledge of the impact of a patient's community and/or partner on influencing their treatment-seeking behavior (n=31/97, 32%), 3) sub-optimal knowledge of necessary steps to address the root cause of a patients' missed appointments (n=36/227, 16%), 4) sub-optimal confidence in addressing a patients' personal circumstances limiting their access to cancer-care (n=424/1151, 37%). Conclusions: This study identified remaining gaps in knowledge, confidence and attitude among US-based HCPs post-exposure to a CME activity aimed at promoting equitable cancer care. Considering these gaps were observed post-education, the actual proportion of US-based HCPs affected is likely underestimated. Future continuing learning initiatives aimed at addressing cancer care disparities in the US should consider targeting gaps identified in this study by challenging learners to re-consider their knowledge, beliefs and confidence in best approaches to navigating the socio-economic barriers hindering patients from seeking cancer care (e.g., via adaptive learning, peer-to-peer learning). Enhancement of the sensitivity of the peripheral visual field of aphakic eyes by a soft contact lens correction.

Abstract:Goldman perimetric field examination was done on 42 glaucomatous eyes, with aphakic spectacles and a soft lens correction. There was a 79% +/- 20% SD overall average enhancement of field size with the soft lens, but the difference varied linearly as a direct function of the initial spectacle field size. There appears to be a significant advantage to the patient in the use of soft lens correction for serial peripheral field measurements.

Abstract:Background: Communication and interpersonal skills are essential medical components of oncology patient care. Patients and families rely on physicians for treatment, expertise, guidance, hope, meaning, and compassion throughout a life-threatening illness. A provider's inability to empathize with patients is linked to physician-related fatigue and burnout. Because oncology training programs focus on teaching evidence-based medicine and clinical acumen, little time may be dedicated to professional development and acquisition of interactive skills. Traditional communication courses typically include two components: formal, knowledge-based learning skills, which are gained from didactic lectures, and role-playing, which usually occurs in small groups. We report the implementation of a novel longitudinal communication curriculum for trainees in Oncology. Materials and Methods: At a single-center institution, an innovative communication curriculum titled "REFLECT" ( R espect, E mpathy, F acilitate Effective Communication, Listen, E licit Information, C ompassion, and T each Others) was implemented for radiation oncology residents and medical oncology fellows to improve and refine physician/patient interactions. All oncology specialty residents and fellows were eligible to participate in this communication curriculum. The curriculum emphasized a reflective process to guide trainees through challenging scenarios. Results: Since October 2018, this comprehensive course consisted of quarterly (four hour) workshops comprising assigned reading, knowledge assessments, didactic lectures, expert guest lecturers, standardized patient simulations, role-playing, patient/expert panels, coaching, reflective writing, and debriefing/feedback sessions. The curriculum provided longitudinal communication training integrated with the learners' daily physician/patient encounters rather than occasional isolated experiences. Fifteen workshops have been completed. Each focused on navigating challenging situations with patients, loved ones, or colleagues. Conclusions: Future directions of the curriculum will entail improving the communication skills of oncology trainees and gathering communication improvement data to assess the program's success formally.

Abstract:Background: Breast, colorectal, and prostate cancer survivors are at increased risk for late and long-term effects post-treatment. The post-treatment phase of care is often poorly coordinated and survivors navigate follow-up care with minimal information or guidance from their healthcare team. This manuscript describes the Extended Cancer Education for Longer-term Survivors (EXCELS) in Primary Care protocol. EXCELS is a randomized controlled trial to test the efficacy of patient-level self-management educational strategies on adherence to preventative health service use and cancer survivorship follow-up guidelines. Methods: The EXCELS trial compares four conditions: (1) EXCELS-website (e.g., a mobile-optimized technology platform); (2) EXCELS-health coaching; (3) EXCELS-website and health coaching; and (4) a print booklet. Approximately 480 breast, colorectal, and prostate survivors will be recruited through the New Jersey Primary Care Research Network (NJPCRN) and New Jersey State Cancer Registry (NJSCR). Eligible survivors (diagnosed stages 1-3) must have completed active treatment, access to a phone and a computer, smartphone or tablet with internet access, and be able to speak and read English. Patient assessments occur at baseline, 6, 12, and 18 months. The primary outcomes are increased engagement in preventive health services and monitoring for cancer recurrence and treatment-related late effects. Discussion: The EXCELS trial is the first to test cancer survivorship educational self-management interventions for cancer survivors in a primary care context. Findings from this trial will inform successful implementation and engagement strategies for longer-term, post-treatment cancer survivors managed in primary care settings. Abstract:Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness of the Breast Cancer Education Intervention (BCEI) program in increasing knowledge and awareness of survivorship topics among survivor advocates and survivors, and to assess the impact of survivorship care plans on quality of life. Breast cancer survivorship care is crucial for improving the quality of life among survivors. Hispanic/Latino women face greater challenges and disparities in accessing survivorship care due to cultural, socioeconomic, and systemic barriers. The BCEI program, adapted from the National Cancer Institute's model, aims to address these disparities through culturally tailored survivorship education and support. Methods: The BCEI program was piloted with a group of 8 Hispanic/Latino breast cancer survivors, in collaboration with Cancer Support Community Arizona (CSCAZ). This six-month program, created and delivered in Spanish, consisted of bi- monthly in-person sessions and phone check-ins. The educational sessions featured topics such as emotional and physical changes, lifestyle behaviors, nutrition, exercise, and psychological distress along with the introduction of a personalized survivorship care plan. These sessions provided a sense of community and emotional support with essential knowledge and understanding of the cancer journey, addressing gaps caused by language barriers in clinical settings, and the lack of Spanish language support groups. Survivor advocates underwent specialized training to effectively support the survivor participants. Data for the BCEI program was collected through pre and post survey evaluations, participant check-ins, and qualitative feedback. Survivors were paired with bilingual Patient Navigators, who connected them to resources in the community. Results: Preliminary results show a significant improvement in survivors' knowledge and satisfaction with survivorship care. Participants demonstrated an increased awareness of the importance of survivorship care plans and showed positive changes in lifestyle behaviors. The results highlighted the program's cultural tailoring and sense of community as key success factors. Conclusion: The Breast Cancer Education Intervention program demonstrates potential in addressing health disparities in breast cancer survivorship among Hispanic/Latino women. Building on this success, we are expanding the BCEI program to include a second iteration focused on Black and African American breast cancer survivors, who also face similar challenges and disparities.
