Abstract:Strain engineering is an effective strategy to modulate the electrocatalytic activity of single‐atom catalysts. This review summarizes the strain effects in single‐atom catalysts for HER, OER, ORR and CO2RR. The underlying mechanisms are also discussed, including adjusting the charge of metal centers, shifting the d‐band center, and reorganizing the d orbitals. Strain engineering is an effective approach for modulating the activity of single‐atom catalysts, yet the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. This review focuses on the strain effects on single‐atom catalysts, detailing the geometric structure distortion and electronic structure changes of the active sites with different strains. It also discusses the mechanisms behind the modulation of electrocatalytic activity for single‐atom catalysts.

Strain-Controlled Spin Regulation in Fe-N-C Catalysts for Enhanced Oxygen Reduction Reaction Activity

Abstract:Fe embedded N-doped graphene (Fe-N-C) stands out as a promising electrocatalyst for-the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), a critical process in fuel cell technologies. The role of spin multiplicity at the Fe center and its influence on ORR intermediates, particularly the spin crossover effect, is a pivotal yet underexplored aspect of spin-related electrocatalysis. Unraveling the nuances of spin multiplicity and its manipulation holds the key to the next generation of Fe-based spin electrocatalysts for renewable energy. Our study employs a first-principles density functional theory (DFT) approach to dissect the electronic configurations across various spin states of ORR intermediates. Our wavefunction and bond analysis unveil a critical mechanism: the spin electron transfer from the nonbonding dx2-y2orbital to the antibonding σ*Fe-N orbital, which dominantly dictates the spin state transition in ORR intermediates on the Fe-N-C catalyst. This insight is further complemented by the discovery that the electronic occupation of d-p π bonds, formed by X-Fe-Y (X/Y: *OH, *O, *OOH), is insensitive to the IS-HS transition of adsorbates. Another novel finding of this research is the strain-induced modulation of spin states within Fe N- -C. We demonstrate that increasing strain drives a transition from an intermediate spin (IS) to a high spin (HS) state in FeN4and its ORR intermediates, effectively suppressing ligand-induced spin crossover. Notably, a unique behavior is observed in five coordinate FeN- 4OH and FeN4OOH, where strain prompts a return to IS due to electron injection into the dxy orbital. Our simulation of polarization current density reveals a direct correlation between applied strain and ORR onset potential. Specifically, at a +8% strain, the onset potential is remarkably enhanced to 0.98 V vs. SHE due to the dominant active moiety of FeN4HS*OH, underscoring the role of spin state modulation in weakening the Fe O bond and reducing the desorption energy of *OH. This work-not only elucidates the origin of spin multiplicity in ORR intermediates on Fe-N-C but also establishes strain-controlled spin regulation as a viable strategy for tuning ORR activity. Compressive Strain Modulation of Single Iron Sites on Helical Carbon Support Boosts Electrocatalytic Oxygen Reduction

Abstract:Designing and modulating the local structure of metal sites is the key to gain the unique selectivity and high activity of single metal site catalysts. Herein, we report strain engineering of curved single atomic iron-nitrogen sites to boost electrocatalytic activity. First, a helical carbon structure with abundant high-curvature surface is realized by carbonization of helical polypyrrole that is templated from self-assembled chiral surfactants. The high-curvature surface introduces compressive strain on the supported Fe-N-4 sites. Consequently, the curved Fe-N-4 sites with 1.5 % compressed Fe-N bonds exhibit downshifted d-band center than the planar sites. Such a change can weaken the bonding strength between the oxygenated intermediates and metal sites, resulting a much smaller energy barrier for oxygen reduction. Catalytic tests further demonstrate that a kinetic current density of 7.922 mA cm(-2) at 0.9 V vs. RHE is obtained in alkaline media for curved Fe-N-4 sites, which is 31 times higher than that for planar ones. Our findings shed light on modulating the local three-dimensional structure of single metal sites and boosting the catalytic activity via strain engineering.

Abstract:The comprehension of the electronic structure of an electrochemical catalyst, as a fundamental core content, has significantly accelerated advancements in competitive catalyst engineering since the adsorption and desorption abilities of an electrode are governed by its surface energy profile. However, achieving precise control over the electronic structure poses a significant challenge. Nanoporous materials, high-entropy systems, and layered double hydroxides frequently induce stoichiometric changes, leading to complexity such as electronic reconstruction, energy degeneracy disruption, and impurity energy levels. Here, we have successfully developed a stretchable freestanding single-crystal LaNiO3 thin film electrocatalyst enabling the accurate manipulation of the electronic structure on a large scale. Different from the rigid epitaxial heterostructure catalyst, we observed that with every 1 % increase in strain, the OER current of freestanding LaNiO3 is enhanced by ∼238 % compared to the pristine state. This is attributed to the dx2-y2 orbital occupation increasing by ∼7 %, and the eg-center decreasing by ∼0.05 eV, resulting in a weakened Ni-O adsorption.
Strain engineering of CoSANC catalyst toward enhancing the oxygen reduction reaction activity

Abstract:Developing efficient and cost-effective platinum-group metal-free (PGMF) catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is crucial for energy conversion and storage devices. Among these catalysts, metal-nitrogen-carbon (MNC) materials, particularly cobalt single-atom catalysts (CoSANC), show promise as ORR electrocatalysts. However, their ORR activity is often hindered by strong hydroxyl (OH) adsorption on the Co sites. While the impact of strain engineering on MNC electrocatalysts has been minimally explored, recent studies suggest its potential to enhance catalytic performance and optimize intrinsic activity in traditional bulk catalysts. In this context, we investigate the effect of surface strain on CoSANC for ORR activity and correlate substrate-strain-induced geometric distortions with catalytic activity using experimental and theoretical methods. The findings suggest that the d-band center gap of spin states (Δεd) may be a preferred descriptor for predicting strain-dependent ORR performance in MNC catalysts. Leveraging CoSANC moiety placed on a substrate with an average size of 1.0 μm, we achieve performance comparable to that of commercial Pt/C catalysts when used as a cathode catalyst in zinc-air batteries. This investigation unveils the structure-function relationship of MNC electrocatalysts regarding strain engineering and provides valuable insights for future ORR activity design and enhancement.

Abstract:Strain engineering in bimetallic alloy structures is of great interest in electrochemical CO2 reduction reactions (CO2RR), in which it simultaneously improves electrocatalytic activity and product selectivity by optimizing the binding properties of intermediates. However, a reliable synthetic strategy and systematic understanding of the strain effects in the CO2RR are still lacking. Herein, we report a strain relaxation strategy used to determine lattice strains in bimetal MNi alloys (M = Pd, Ag, and Au) and realize an outstanding CO2-to-CO Faradaic efficiency of 96.6% and show the outstanding activity and durability toward a Zn-CO2 battery. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations predict that the relaxation of strained PdNi alloys (s-PdNi) is correlated with increases in synthesis temperature, and the high temperature activation energy drives complete atomic mixing of multiple metal atoms to allow for regulation of lattice strains. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that strain relaxation effectively improves CO2RR activity and selectivity by optimizing the formation energies of *COOH and *CO intermediates on s-PdNi alloy surfaces, as also verified by in situ spectroscopic investigations. This approach provides a promising approach for catalyst design, enabling independent optimization of formation energies of reaction intermediates to improve catalytic activity and selectivity simultaneously.

Abstract:In order to realize the sulfur and water resistance and facilitate the CO oxidation reactions, the effects of strain on the adsorption of CO, O2, SO2 and H2O molecules on Ni single-atom-catalyst supported by single-carbon-vacancy graphene (Ni-SG) have been studied based on first principles calculations. It shows that the compressive strain increases the adsorption energies of all above mentioned molecules on Ni-SG, where SO2 is adsorbed more strongly on Ni-SG than CO. However, in the presence of tensile strain, the adsorption energies decreases significantly when the molecules (O2 and SO2) obtain electrons from Ni-SG, while the adsorption energies just slightly decrease when the molecules (CO and H2O) lose electrons to Ni-SG, which finally achieves the preferential adsorption of CO and O2 molecules on Ni-SG by tensile strain. In addition, with tensile strain increasing to 10%, the rate-limited energy barrier along Eley-Rideal (ER) path monotonically increases from 0.77 eV to 0.98 eV, while the rate-limited energy barrier along Langmuir-Hinshelwood (LH) path monotonically decreases from 0.54 eV to 0.44 eV, indicating that the tensile strain can facilitate the LH mechanism while imped the ER mechanism on Ni-SG. The Hirshfeld charge and orbital levels of O2 and CO molecules are modulated by the tensile strain, which plays an important role for the decreasing of energy barriers for CO oxidation. Overall, the tensile strain can enhance the sulfur and water resistance of Ni-SG, as well as boost the CO oxidation reactions.

Abstract:We have investigated the complete electrodynamic response of the heavy-electron compounds U2Zn17 and UCu5. Particular emphasis has been devoted to the optical evidence of the antiferromagnetic phase transitions at 9.7 K and 15 K for U2Zn17 and UCu5, respectively. In UCu5, we found an absorption in the far infrared, which is ascribed to excitations across a spin-density-wave-type gap. This feature is absent in U2Zn17. We argue that UCu5 belongs to a characteristically different class of antiferromagnets than U2Zn17 which represents the class of heavy-electron compounds with localized magnetic moments.

Abstract:Catalyst activity affects the reaction rate, and an increasing number of studies have shown that strain can significantly increase the electrocatalytic activity. Catalysts such as alloys and core-shell structures can modulate their properties through strain effects. Reasonable simulation techniques can be used to predict and design the catalytic performance based on understanding the strain action mechanism. Therefore, the methodological flow of theoretical simulations is summarised in this review. The mechanism underlying the strain-adsorption-reaction relationship is discussed using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. An introduction to DFT is given first, followed by a quick rundown of the strain classification and application. Typical electrocatalytic reactions, namely, the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions and oxygen reduction reaction, are taken as examples. After briefly explaining these reactions, the relevant studies on simulating the strain to tune the catalyst performance are covered. The simulation methods are summarised and analysed to observe the effects of strain on electrocatalytic properties. Finally, a summary of the issues with simulated strain-assisted design and a discussion on the perspectives and forecasts for the future design of effective catalysts are provided.
Understanding of Strain Effects in the Electrochemical Reduction of CO 2 : Using Pd Nanostructures as an Ideal Platform.

Abstract:Tuning the surface strain of heterogeneous catalysts represents a powerful strategy to engineer their catalytic properties by altering the electronic structures. However, a clear and systematic understanding of strain effect in electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide is still lacking, which restricts the use of surface strain as a tool to optimize the performance of electrocatalysts. Herein, we demonstrate the strain effect in electrochemical reduction of CO2 by using Pd octahedra and icosahedra with similar sizes as a well-defined platform. The Pd icosahedra/C catalyst shows a maximum Faradaic efficiency for CO production of 91.1% at -0.8 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (vs. RHE), 1.7-fold higher than the maximum Faradaic efficiency of Pd octahedra/C catalyst at -0.7 V (vs. RHE). The combination of molecular dynamic simulations and density functional theory calculations reveals that the tensile strain on the surface of icosahedra boosts the catalytic activity by shifting up the d-band center and thus strengthening the adsorption of key intermediate COOH*. This strain effect was further verified directly by the surface valence-band photoemission spectra and electrochemical analysis.

Abstract:The strain effect, along with the ligand effect and synergistic effect, contributes primarily to the optimization of electrocatalytic activity and stability. The strain effect leads to a shift in the d-band center and alters binding energies toward adsorbates. Under electrocatalytic circumstances, the strain effect and ligand effect by and large function in combination; however, the decay and vanishing of the ligand effect precede the strain effect as the thickness of the shell in the core/shell structure or metallic overlayers on substrates increases. The strain effect on electrocatalytic activity can be well engineered by tuning the thickness of shells or atomic composition. Microstrain, or localized lattice strain, is another type of strain associated with structural defects such as grain boundaries and multi-twinning. In this review, we discuss the origin of the strain effect and how it affects electrocatalytic activity based on the d-band model. We present the structural characterization and quantitative determination of strain. Metal-based nanocrystals are basically grouped into two types of structures to which the strain engineering applies, i.e. lattice strain-associated structures (which include the general core/shell structure and solid solution alloy) and multiple defects-induced structures. Then analysis is performed on the correlation of strain and ligand effects and on the tuning strategies of the strain effect for electrocatalysis. After that, we use representative examples to demonstrate how strain engineering assists in typical electrocatalytic reactions on anodes and cathodes. Finally, we summarize and propose potential research areas in terms of enhancing electrocatalytic activities by strain engineering in the future.
Uterine perivascular epithelioid cell tumour and assessment of its malignant potential.

Abstract:Dear Sir, Perivascular epithelioid cell tumours (PEComas) are relatively uncommon mesenchymal tumours.(1,2) The uterus is the more frequently reported site of origin of PEComas,(2,3) and to the best of our knowledge, there have been approximately 60 cases of uterine PEComas reported in the literature.(3,4) Uterine PEComas belong to the same family as angiomyolipomas, lymphangioleiomyomatosis and clear cell sugar tumours, characterised by a myomelanocytic immunohistochemical phenotype.(1,3) Recent studies have described several histological features of the tumour that portend its aggressive behaviour, but have also shown possible therapeutic management for PEComas, namely by means of mammalian target of rapamycin inhibitors;(4) these findings make recognition of this tumour more imperative than before. We herein report a case of a 45-year-old woman who presented with menorrhagia and had a history of complex partial seizures and renal angiomyolipoma. A uterine fundal lesion was detected sonographically, and laparoscopic hysterectomy and bilateral salpingectomy were performed. Grossly, the lesion had an ill-defined whitish appearance admixed closely with blood vessels. Two other lesions were also admixed closely within the uterine isthmus and the subserosa. Histological examination of the uterine fundal lesion revealed epithelioid tumour cells with clear-to-pale cytoplasm and ovoid nuclei with open chromatin pattern. The epithelioid cells were surrounded by spindled cells with similar cytological features. The lesion displayed infiltrative borders and tumour multinucleated giant cells were discerned within more cellular areas. However, mitoses were not observed. The lesions in the other two areas (i.e. the uterine isthmus and subserosa) also revealed circumscribed aggregates of similar tumour cells. The tumour cells exhibited the typical myomelanocytic immunophenotype by expressing smooth muscle actin, desmin, HMB-45 and Melan-A. The cell proliferative index by the Ki-67 marker was less than 1%. Based on the findings, it was concluded that all three lesions were uterine PEComas. In view of the patient’s recently diagnosed renal angiomyolipoma and the history of complex partial seizures with radiologically detected calcified tubers, the possibility of tuberous sclerosis complex was raised. The presence of infiltrative margins, as well as scattered tumour multinucleated giant cells, portends the more aggressive behaviour of the tumour (Fig. 1). There have been reports of uterine PEComas exhibiting aggressive behaviour and even causing distant metastases.(2) As such, various classification systems for the stratification of PEComas based on their malignancy potential have been proposed. In our case, the tumour sizes were small and lacked tumour necrosis, lymphovascular invasion and mitoses. The largest lesion had an ill-defined border; additionally, there were scattered tumour multinucleated giant cells within the cellular areas of the lesion. As such, we felt that the tumour in our case was best classified as PEComa of uncertain malignancy potential. Abstract:The kinetics of homolytic methylation of the model purine compound caffeine at carbon-8 were determined as a function of several reaction variables. The methyl radical was generated from tert-butyl peracetate (BPA) either thermally (65 to 95/sup 0/C) or photochemically (greater than 300 nm, 25/sup 0/C). The thermal reaction k (25/sup 0/C) was found to be 3.09 x 10/sup -8/ s/sup -1/ from the linear log k (pseudo-first-order) vs. l/T plot. The light reactions using the 450- and 1200-W mercury lamps proceeded with k (25/sup 0/C) 450- and 2160-fold greater, respectively. The derived activation energies are consistent with an S/sub E/Ar reaction. Increasing the concentration of caffeine from 0.25 M to 1.67 M in the presence of 3 molar equiv of BPA did not cause any side reaction. The pH-rate profile can be predicted by rate equations, which are derived on the basis of an electrophilic substitution occurring on the free base and conjugate acid of a heteroaromatic system. A competition study using tetrahydrofuran reveals the presence of a radical sigma complex IIIa and a charge transfer complex IIIb as intermediates for methylation under neutral and acidic conditions, respectively. Their rate-determining nature was indicated by the small positive kinetic isotope effectmore » and the inverse solvent isotope effects: k/sub H/sub 3/O/sup +///k/sub D/sub 3/O/sup +// = 0.87 and k/sub H/sub 2/O//k/sub D/sub 2/O/ = 0.32. Thus, in acidic medium, a preequilibrium proton transfer to form the caffeine conjugate acid precedes the rate-controlling formation of IIIb. In neutral solution, the rate-determining step appears to be the protonation of the radical nitrogen in IIIa converting it to III. The acid-catalyzed caffeine-BPA reaction was shown to be general for other purines such as adenine, adenosine, guanine, guanosine, hypoxanthine, and inosine.« less
Adjusting the valence band center of Co-Ni-bimetallic sulfides through lattice expansion and stacking faults triggered by strain engineering to boost oxygen evolution reaction

Abstract:Stress engineering can improve catalytic performance by straining the catalyst lattice. An electrocatalyst, Co3S4/Ni3S2-10%Mo@NC, was prepared with abundant lattice distortion to boost oxygen evolution reaction (OER). With the assistance of the intramolecular steric hindrance effect of metal-organic frameworks, slow dissolution by MoO42- of the Ni substrate and recrystallization of Ni2+ was observed in the process of Co(OH)F crystal growth with mild temperature and short time reaction. The lattice expansion and stacking faults created defects inside the Co3S4 crystal, improved the material conductivity, optimized the valence band electron distribution of the material, and promoted the rapid conversion of the reaction intermediates. The presence of reactive intermediates of the OER under catalytic conditions was investigated using operando Raman spectroscopy. The electrocatalysts exhibited super high performance, a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at an overpotential of 164 mV and 100 mA cm-2 at 223 mV, which were comparable to those of integrated RuO2. Our work for the first time demonstrates that the dissolution-recrystallization triggered by strain engineering is a good modulation approach to adjust the structure and surface activity of catalyst, suggesting promising industrial application.

Abstract:Strain engineering is a powerful approach to tuning the electrocatalytic properties, but the systematic understanding of the strain effect in electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO 2 RR) is still lacking. Here, we have extensively investigated the impact of strain on the catalytic selectivity and activity of Mo-based MXenes towards CO 2 RR. Our calculations suggest that strain can effectively tune the CO 2 activation and reduction processes on MXenes, endowing great potential to obtain enhanced electrocatalytic performance. Notably, the activated CO 2 can be selectively reduced to methane (CH 4 ) on all electrocatalysts, which is conducive to restricting the production of HCOOH, H 2 CO, CH 3 OH and H 2 (HER). Then, we highlight that compressive strains can reduce the limiting potential (U L ) of CO 2 RR on Mo 2 C and Mo 3 C 2 from −0.68 and −0.66 V to −0.49 and −0.38 V at the strain of −4%@Mo 2 C and −6%@Mo 3 C 2 , respectively, which are superior to benchmark Cu (2 1 1) (−0.67 V). Further mechanism analysis illuminates that the strain can significantly modify the d-band center of MXene, which endows the selective modulation of the adsorption strength of OCH 2 O* and HOCH 2 O* to achieve promoted catalytic activity. Our results provide an in-depth understanding of the strain effect and rational design principles for enhanced electrocatalytic CO 2 RR.

Abstract:Epitaxial strain can cause both lattice distortion and oxygen non-stoichiometry, effects that are strongly coupled at the heterojunctions of complex nickelate oxides. In this paper, we decouple these structural and chemical effects on the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) by using a set of coherently-strained epitaxial NdNiO3 (NNO) films. We show that within the regime where oxygen vacancies (VOs) are negligible, compressive strain is favorable for the OER while tensile strain is unfavorable, as the former induces orbital splitting, resulting in a higher occupancy in the d3z2-r2 orbital and weaker Ni-O chemisorption. However, when the tensile strain is large enough to promote the formation of VOs, an increase in the OER is also observed. The partial reduction of Ni3+ to Ni2+ due to VOs makes the eg occupancy slightly larger than unit, which is believed to account for this increased OER activity. Our work highlights that epitaxial-strain-induced lattice distortion and VO generation can be individually or collectively exploited to tune OER activities, which is of importance for the predictive synthesis of high-performance electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Support-induced strain engineering is useful for modulating the properties of two-dimensional materials. However, controlling strain of planar molecules is technically challenging due to their sub-2 nm lateral size. Additionally, the effect of strain on molecular properties remains poorly understood. Here we show that carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are ideal substrates for inducing optimum properties through molecular curvature. In a tandem-flow electrolyser with monodispersed cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) on single-walled CNTs (CoPc/SWCNTs) for CO 2 reduction, we achieve a methanol partial current density of >90 mA cm −2 with >60% selectivity, surpassing wide multiwalled CNTs at 16.6%. We report vibronic and X-ray spectroscopies to unravel the distinct local geometries and electronic structures induced by the strong molecule–support interactions. Grand canonical density functional theory confirms that curved CoPc/SWCNTs improve *CO binding to enable subsequent reduction, whereas wide multiwalled CNTs favour CO desorption. Our results show the important role of SWCNTs beyond catalyst dispersion and electron conduction.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts are becoming increasingly significant to numerous energy conversion reactions. However, their rational design and construction remain quite challenging due to the poorly understood structure–function relationship. Here we demonstrate the dynamic behavior of CuN 2 C 2 site during operando oxygen reduction reaction, revealing a substrate-strain tuned geometry distortion of active sites and its correlation with the activity. Our best CuN 2 C 2 site, on carbon nanotube with 8 nm diameter, delivers a sixfold activity promotion relative to graphene. Density functional theory and X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveal that reasonable substrate strain allows the optimized distortion, where Cu bonds strongly with the oxygen species while maintaining intimate coordination with C/N atoms. The optimized distortion facilitates the electron transfer from Cu to the adsorbed O, greatly boosting the oxygen reduction activity. This work uncovers the structure–function relationship of single-atom catalysts in terms of carbon substrate, and provides guidance to their future design and activity promotion.

Abstract:The electrocatalytic activity of transition‐metal‐based compounds is strongly related to the spin states of metal atoms. However, the ways for regulation of spin states of catalysts are still limited, and the underlying relationship between the spin states and catalytic activities remains unclear. Herein, for the first time, by taking NiII‐based compounds without high or low spin states for example, it is shown that their spin states can be delocalized after introducing structural distortion to the atomic layers. The delocalized spin states for Ni atoms can provide not only high electrical conductivity but also low adsorption energy between the active sites and reaction intermediates for the system. As expected, the ultrathin nanosheets of nickel‐chalcogenides with structural distortions show dramatically enhanced activity in electrocatalytic oxygen evolution compared to their corresponding bulk samples. This work establishes new way for the design of advanced electrocatalysts in transition‐metal‐based compounds via regulation of spin states.
Compressive strain in Cu catalysts: Enhancing generation of C2+ products in electrochemical CO2 reduction

Abstract:Elastic strain in Cu catalysts enhances their selectivity for the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (eCO2RR), particularly toward the formation of multicarbon (C2+) products. However, the reasons for this selectivity and the effect of catalyst precursors have not yet been clarified. Hence, we employed a redox strategy to induce strain on the surface of Cu nanocrystals. Oxidative transformation was employed to convert Cu nanocrystals to CuxO nanocrystals; these were subsequently electrochemically reduced to form Cu catalysts, while maintaining their compressive strain. Using a flow cell configuration, a current density of 1 A/cm2 and Faradaic efficiency exceeding 80% were realized for the C2+ products. The selectivity ratio of C2+/C1 was also remarkable at 9.9, surpassing that observed for the Cu catalyst under tensile strain by approximately 7.6 times. In-situ Raman and infrared spectroscopy revealed a decrease in the coverage of K+ ion-hydrated water (K·H2O) on the compressively strained Cu catalysts, consistent with molecular dynamics simulations and density functional theory calculations. Finite element method simulations confirmed that reducing the coverage of coordinated K·H2O water increased the probability of intermediate reactants interacting with the surface, thereby promoting efficient C-C coupling and enhancing the yield of C2+ products. These findings provide valuable insights into targeted design strategies for Cu catalysts used in the eCO2RR.
