Abstract:Hyperoxia has been shown to expand the aerobic capacity of some fishes, although there have been very few studies examining the underlying mechanisms and how they vary across different exposure durations. Here, we investigated the cardiorespiratory function of yellowtail kingfish ( Seriola lalandi ) acutely (~20 h) and chronically (3–5 weeks) acclimated to hyperoxia (~200% air saturation). Our results show that the aerobic performance of kingfish is limited in normoxia and increases with environmental hyperoxia. The aerobic scope was elevated in both hyperoxia treatments driven by a ~33% increase in maximum O 2 uptake (MO 2max ), although the mechanisms differed across treatments. Fish acutely transferred to hyperoxia primarily elevated tissue O 2 extraction, while increased stroke volume-mediated maximum cardiac output was the main driving factor in chronically acclimated fish. Still, an improved O 2 delivery to the heart in chronic hyperoxia was not the only explanatory factor as such. Here, maximum cardiac output only increased in chronic hyperoxia compared with normoxia when plastic ventricular growth occurred, as increased stroke volume was partly enabled by an ~8%–12% larger relative ventricular mass. Our findings suggest that hyperoxia may be used long term to boost cardiorespiratory function potentially rendering fish more resilient to metabolically challenging events and stages in their life cycle.

Abstract:Fish can experience hyperoxia in shallow environments due to photosynthetic activity and this has been suggested to provide them with a metabolic refuge during acute warming. However, this hypothesis has never been tested on a tropical marine species. Thus, we fitted 29°C-acclimated wild schoolmaster snapper ( Lutjanus apodus ; a species known to experience diel hyperoxia in mangrove creeks and coastal waters) with Transonic ® flow probes and exposed them to an acute increase in temperature (at 1°C h −1 ) in respirometers under normoxia and hyperoxia (150% air saturation), until their critical thermal maximum (CT max ). The CT max of both groups was ∼39°C, and no differences in maximum cardiac function were recorded as the fish were warmed. However, temperature-induced factorial aerobic scope was significantly greater in fish tested under hyperoxia. These data suggest that hyperoxia will not protect coastal tropical fish species during marine heat waves, despite its effects on metabolic scope/capacity.

Abstract:A progressive inability of the cardiorespiratory system to maintain systemic oxygen supply at elevated temperatures has been suggested to reduce aerobic scope and the upper thermal limit of aquatic ectotherms. However, few studies have directly investigated the dependence of thermal limits on oxygen transport capacity. By manipulating oxygen availability (via environmental hyperoxia) and blood oxygen carrying capacity (via experimentally-induced anemia) in European perch (Perca fluviatilis, Linneaus), we investigated the effects of oxygen transport capacity on aerobic scope and the critical thermal maximum (CTmax). Hyperoxia resulted in a two-fold increase in aerobic scope at the control temperature of 23°C, but this did not translate to an elevated CTmax in comparison with control fish (34.6±0.1°C vs. 34.0±0.5°C, respectively). Anemia (∼43% reduction in haemoglobin concentration) did not cause a reduction in aerobic scope nor CTmax (33.8±0.3°C) compared with control fish. Additionally, oxygen consumption rates of anemic perch during thermal ramping increased in a similar exponential manner as in control fish, highlighting that perch have an impressive capacity to compensate for a substantial reduction in blood oxygen carrying capacity. Taken together, these results indicate that oxygen limitation is not a universal mechanism determining the CTmax of fishes.

Climate warming is driving the maximum attainable size of many fish species to decrease, yet the mechanisms underlying this 'shrinking' phenomenon are not well understood. The gill oxygen limitation (GOL) hypothesis is perhaps the most prominent mechanistic proposition, asserting that, as fish grow, the two‐dimensional gill surface area (GSA) progressively fails to supply enough oxygen to support the continued growth of the three‐dimensional body—a process exacerbated by increased metabolism associated with warming. However, these ideas have been hotly debated owing to limited empirical understanding of how GSA develops with respect to a fish's body mass and oxygen requirements. For the first time, we addressed this knowledge gap by rearing Galaxias maculatus for 5 months at normal (15°C) and elevated (20°C) summer temperatures, with (hyperoxia) or without (normoxia) supplementary oxygen. Quantifying individual metabolic rate and GSA traits across body sizes encompassing most of the species' ontogeny, we found little evidence for a change in the proportion of GSA available per unit of metabolic rate (termed the S metric) and no improvements under hyperoxia. Importantly, at the elevated temperature where gill oxygen limitation should be most pronounced, the S metric did not change across body mass in either oxygen treatment (allometric exponents were no different from 0). These results indicate that the gills can grow in ways that support an individual's oxygen requirements, contrasting with the suggestion that size reductions of fish in response to climate warming are driven by an insurmountable geometric constraint at the gills. Abstract:The minimum O 2 needed to fuel the demand of aquatic animals is commonly observed to increase with temperature, driven by accelerating metabolism. However, recent measurements of critical O 2 thresholds (" P crit ") reveal more complex patterns, including those with a minimum at an intermediate thermal "optimum". To discern the prevalence, physiological drivers, and biogeographic manifestations of such curves, we analyze new experimental and biogeographic data using a general dynamic model of aquatic water breathers. The model simulates the transfer of oxygen from ambient water through a boundary layer and into animal tissues driven by temperature-dependent rates of metabolism, diffusive gas exchange, and ventilatory and circulatory systems with O 2 -protein binding. We find that a thermal optimum in P crit can arise even when all physiological rates increase steadily with temperature. This occurs when O 2 supply at low temperatures is limited by a process that is more temperature sensitive than metabolism, but becomes limited by a less sensitive process at warmer temperatures. Analysis of published species respiratory traits suggests that this scenario is not uncommon in marine biota, with ventilation and circulation limiting supply under cold conditions and diffusion limiting supply at high temperatures. Using occurrence data, we show that species with these physiological traits inhabit lowest O 2 waters near the optimal temperature for hypoxia tolerance and are restricted to higher O 2 at temperatures above and below this optimum. Our results imply that hypoxia tolerance can decline under both cold and warm conditions and thus may influence both poleward and equatorward species range limits.

Abstract:Many fish naturally encounter a daily cycle of hypoxia, but it is unclear whether this exposure hardens hypoxia-intolerant fish to future hypoxia or leads to accumulated stress and death. The rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) is a putatively hypoxia-sensitive species found in rivers and estuaries that may routinely experience hypoxic events. Trout were exposed to one of four 135 h treatments in a swim-tunnel respirometer: (1) air-saturated control (20.7 kPa PO2 ); (2) diel cycling O2 (20.7-4.2 kPa PO2 over 24 h); (3) acute hypoxia (130 h at 20.7 kPa PO2 followed by 5 h at 4.2 kPa PO2 ); and (4) the mean oxygen tension (12.4 kPa PO2 ) experienced by the diel cycled fish. Some responses were similar in diel O2 cycled and mean PO2 -treated fish, but overall, exposure to ecologically representative diel hypoxia cycles improved hypoxia tolerance. Diel hypoxia-induced protective responses included increased inducible HSP70 concentration and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, as well as reduced plasma cortisol. Acclimation to diel hypoxia allowed metabolic rates to decline during hypoxia, reduced oxygen debt following subsequent exposures, and allowed fish to return to an anabolic phenotype. The data demonstrate that acute diel cycling hypoxia improves hypoxia tolerance in previously intolerant fish through the activation of cellular protective mechanisms and a reduction in metabolic O2 requirements.
Smaller body size under warming is not due to gill-oxygen limitation in a cold-water salmonid

Abstract:Declining body size in fishes and other aquatic ectotherms associated with anthropogenic climate warming has significant implications for future fisheries yields, stock assessments and aquatic ecosystem stability. One proposed mechanism seeking to explain such body-size reductions, known as the gill oxygen limitation (GOL) hypothesis, has recently been used to model future impacts of climate warming on fisheries but has not been robustly empirically tested. We used brook trout ( Salvelinus fontinalis ), a fast-growing, cold-water salmonid species of broad economic, conservation and ecological value, to examine the GOL hypothesis in a long-term experiment quantifying effects of temperature on growth, resting metabolic rate (RMR), maximum metabolic rate (MMR) and gill surface area (GSA). Despite significantly reduced growth and body size at an elevated temperature, allometric slopes of GSA were not significantly different than 1.0 and were above those for RMR and MMR at both temperature treatments (15°C and 20°C), contrary to GOL expectations. We also found that the effect of temperature on RMR was time-dependent, contradicting the prediction that heightened temperatures increase metabolic rates and reinforcing the importance of longer-term exposures (e.g. >6 months) to fully understand the influence of acclimation on temperature–metabolic rate relationships. Our results indicate that although oxygen limitation may be important in some aspects of temperature–body size relationships and constraints on metabolic supply may contribute to reduced growth in some cases, it is unlikely that GOL is a universal mechanism explaining temperature–body size relationships in aquatic ectotherms. We suggest future research focus on alternative mechanisms underlying temperature–body size relationships, and that projections of climate change impacts on fisheries yields using models based on GOL assumptions be interpreted with caution.

Abstract:Ocean warming is a prevailing threat to marine ectotherms. Recently the "plastic floors, concrete ceilings" hypothesis was proposed, which suggests that a warmed fish will acclimate to higher temperatures by reducing standard metabolic rate (SMR) while keeping maximum metabolic rate (MMR) stable, therefore improving aerobic scope (AS). Here we evaluated this hypothesis on red drum ( Sciaenops ocellatus ) while incorporating measures of hypoxia vulnerability (critical oxygen threshold; P crit ) and mitochondrial performance. Fish were subjected to a 12-week acclimation to 20 °C or 28 °C. Respirometry was performed every 4 weeks to obtain metabolic rate and P crit ; mitochondrial respirometry was performed on liver and heart samples at the end of the acclimation. 28 °C fish had a significantly higher SMR, MMR, and P crit than 20 °C controls at time 0, but SMR declined by 36.2 % over the 12-week acclimation. No change in SMR was observed in the control treatment. Contrary to expectations, SMR suppression did not improve AS relative to time 0 owing to a progressive decline in MMR over acclimation time. P crit decreased by 27.2 % in the warm-acclimated fishes, which resulted in temperature treatments having statistically similar values by 12-weeks. No differences in mitochondrial traits were observed in the heart – despite a Δ8 °C assay temperature – while liver respiratory and coupling control ratios were significantly improved, suggesting that mitochondrial plasticity may contribute to the reduced SMR with warming. Overall, this work suggests that warming induced metabolic suppression offsets the deleterious consequences of high oxygen demand on hypoxia vulnerability, and in so doing greatly expands the theoretical range of metabolically available habitats for red drum.

Abstract:Vertical heterogeneity in lakes and estuaries can present cold‐adapted fishes with a temperature–oxygen squeeze, such that the epilimnion is stressfully warm and the cooler hypolimnion is hypoxic, thereby restricting fishes to the metalimnion. In temperate floodplain rivers, patches of lentic habitat (e.g., alcoves) have the potential to provide thermal refuge for cold‐water fishes during summer, but little is known about whether these smaller habitat features present fish with temperature–oxygen constraints. In this study, we measured temperature and oxygen profiles in six cold‐water alcoves on the Willamette River floodplain (Oregon, U.S.A.) to characterise potential trade‐offs in temperature and oxygen for a cold‐water fish, coastal cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii clarkii). To evaluate how fish responded to trade‐offs, we used synergistic methods (needle probe thermocouple, surgically implanted iButtons, and external temperature transmitting radio tags) to monitor fish body temperatures at different temporal scales and compare them to temperature–depth profiles. The cold‐water alcoves displayed a linear relationship between dissolved oxygen and temperature, where cooler temperatures came at the expense of reduced oxygen. Fish body temperatures were intermediate to temperatures recorded at the surface and bottom of the alcove. The span of depths selected by these fish represents less than 20% of the available vertical habitat in these alcoves. These results demonstrate that refuges formed by cool hyporheic upwelling can generate a temperature–oxygen squeeze where fish use only a subset of the refuge habitat feature. Oxygen constraints on thermal refuge use may be a blind spot for climate adaptation planning for cold‐water fishes, because dissolved oxygen data are limited compared to water temperature data, and many cool refuges are fed by subsurface flows which are potentially hypoxic.

Abstract:Animals routinely encounter environmental (e.g., high temperatures and hypoxia) as well as physiological perturbations (e.g., exercise and digestion) that may threaten homeostasis. However, comparing the relative threat or "disruptiveness" imposed by different stressors is difficult, as stressors vary in their mechanisms, effects, and timescales. We exploited the fact that several acute stressors can induce the loss of equilibrium (LOE) in fish to (i) compare the metabolic recovery profiles of three environmentally relevant stressors and (ii) test the concept that LOE could be used as a physiological calibration for the intensity of different stressors. We focused on Etheostoma caeruleum, a species that routinely copes with environmental fluctuations in temperature and oxygen and that relies on burst swimming to relocate and avoid predators, as our model. Using stop-flow (intermittent) respirometry, we tracked the oxygen consumption rate (MO2) as E. caeruleum recovered from LOE induced by hypoxia (PO2 at LOE), warming (critical thermal maximum, CTmax), or exhaustive exercise. Regardless of the stressor used, E. caeruleum recovered rapidly, returning to routine MO2 within ~3 h. Fish recovering from hypoxia and warming had similar maximum MO2, aerobic scopes, recovery time, and total excess post-hypoxia or post-warming oxygen consumption. Though exhaustive exercise induced a greater maximum MO2 and corresponding higher aerobic scope than warming or hypoxia, its recovery profile was otherwise similar to the other stressors, suggesting that "calibration" to a physiological state such as LOE may be a viable conceptual approach for investigators interested in questions related to multiple stressors, cross tolerance, and how animals cope with challenges to homeostasis.
Oxygen- and capacity-limitation of thermal tolerance: a matrix for integrating climate-related stressor effects in marine ecosystems

Abstract:SUMMARY The concept of oxygen- and capacity-dependent thermal tolerance in aquatic ectotherms has successfully explained climate-induced effects of rising temperatures on species abundance in the field. Oxygen supply to tissues and the resulting aerobic performance characters thus form a primary link between organismal fitness and its role and functioning at the ecosystem level. The thermal window of performance in water breathers matches their window of aerobic scope. Loss of performance reflects the earliest level of thermal stress, caused by hypoxaemia and the progressive mismatch of oxygen supply and demand at the borders of the thermal envelope. Oxygen deficiency elicits the transition to passive tolerance and associated systemic and cellular stress signals like hormonal responses or oxidative stress as well as the use of protection mechanisms like heat shock proteins at thermal extremes. Thermal acclimatization between seasons or adaptation to a climate regime involves shifting thermal windows and adjusting window widths. The need to specialize on a limited temperature range results from temperature-dependent trade-offs at several hierarchical levels, from molecular structure to whole-organism functioning, and may also support maximized energy efficiency. Various environmental factors like CO2 (ocean acidification) and hypoxia interact with these principal relationships. Existing knowledge suggests that these factors elicit metabolic depression supporting passive tolerance to thermal extremes. However, they also exacerbate hypoxaemia, causing a narrowing of thermal performance windows and prematurely leading the organism to the limits of its thermal acclimation capacity. The conceptual analysis suggests that the relationships between energy turnover, the capacities of activity and other functions and the width of thermal windows may lead to an integrative understanding of specialization on climate and, as a thermal matrix, of sensitivity to climate change and the factors involved. Such functional relationships might also relate to climate-induced changes in species interactions and, thus, community responses at the ecosystem level.

Behavioural responses to acute warming precede critical shifts in the cellular and physiological thermal stress responses in fish

Abstract:From a conservation perspective, it is important to identify when sub-lethal temperatures begin to adversely impact an organism. However, it is unclear whether, during acute exposures, these cellular thresholds occur at similar temperatures to other physiological or behavioural changes. To test this, we estimated temperature preference (15.1 ± 1.1 °C) using a shuttle box, thermal optima for aerobic scope (10–15 °C) using respirometry, agitation temperature (22.0 ± 1.4 °C) as the point where a fish exhibits a behavioural avoidance response and the (28.2 ± 0.4 °C) as the upper thermal limit for 1 yr old Brook Trout ( ) acclimated to 10 °C. We then acutely exposed a different subset of fish to these temperatures and sampled tissues when they reached the target temperature or after 60 min of recovery at 10 °C. We used qPCR to estimate mRNA transcript levels of genes associated with heat shock proteins, oxidative stress, apoptosis, and inducible transcription factors. A major shift in the transcriptome response occurred near the agitation temperature, which may identify a link between the cellular stress response and the behavioural avoidance response.

Abstract:Fish in their natural environments possess elaborate mechanisms that regulate physiological function to mitigate the adverse effects of multiple environmental stressors such as temperature, metals, and hypoxia. We investigated how warm acclimation affects mitochondrial responses to Cd, hypoxia, and acute temperature shifts (heat shock and cold snap) in rainbow trout. We observed that state 3 respiration driven by complex I (CI) was resistant to the stressors while warm acclimation and Cd reduced complex I +II (CI + II) driven state 3 respiration. In contrast, state 4 (leak) respirations for both CI and CI + II were consistently stimulated by warm acclimation resulting in reduced mitochondrial coupling efficiency (respiratory control ratio, RCR). Warm acclimation and Cd exacerbated their individual effect on leak respiration to further reduce the RCR. Moreover, the effect of warm acclimation on mitochondrial bioenergetics aligned with its inhibitory effect on activities of citrate synthase and both CI and CII. Unlike the Cd and warm acclimation combined exposure, hypoxia alone and in combination with warm acclimation and/or Cd abolished the stimulation of CI and CI + II powered leak respirations resulting in partial recovery of RCR. The response to acute temperature shifts indicated that while state 3 respiration returned to pre-acclimation level, the leak respiration did not. Overall, our findings suggest a complex in vivo interaction of multiple stressors on mitochondrial function that are not adequately predicted by their individual effects.

Abstract:Understanding how aquatic species respond to extremes of DO and temperature is crucial for determining how they will be affected by climate change, which is predicted to increasingly expose them to levels beyond their optima. In this study we used novel animal-borne DO, temperature and depth sensors to determine the effect of extremes of DO and temperature on the vertical habitat use of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar in aquaculture cages. Salmon showed a preference for temperatures around 16.5 to 17.5 °C, however, selection of preferred temperatures was trumped by active avoidance of low DO (<35% saturation) at the bottom of the cage. In addition to low DO, salmon also avoided warm surface waters (>20.1 °C), which led to a considerable contraction in the available vertical habitat. Despite their avoidance behavior, fish spent a large amount of time in waters with suboptimal DO (<60% saturation). These results show that vertical habitat contraction could likely be a significant consequence of climate change if the reduction in DO outpaces the increase in hypoxia tolerance through local adaptation. They furthermore highlight that site-specific environmental conditions and stock-specific tolerance thresholds may need to be considered when determining stocking densities.

Abstract:Temperature strongly regulates the distribution and fitness of ectotherms, and many studies have measured the temperature dependence of physiological performance in controlled laboratory settings. In contrast, little is known about how temperature influences ectotherm performance in the wild, so the ecological significance of physiological performance as measured in the laboratory is unclear. Our aim was to measure the temperature dependence of performance in the wild for several species of fishes and to explore how temperatures that maximize performance in the wild (ToptE) are related to species biogeographies. We gathered body activity and growth data from the wild for nine tropical and temperate fish species, and by fitting thermal performance curves to these data, compared ToptE to species‐specific warm range boundary temperatures (the average temperature of the warmest month at equatorward range limits). To explore the degree to which trends in the wild reflect trends in physiological performance measured in the laboratory, we also compiled published data on the temperature dependence of aerobic metabolic scope in fishes and compared these to our wild fish data. We found ToptE in the wild was strongly correlated with warm range boundary temperatures, and that the difference between these two temperatures (the ‘environmental heating tolerance’) was smaller for more‐tropical species. Comparison with laboratory data revealed that ToptE approaches warm boundary temperatures in the wild at the same rate that the optimal temperature for aerobic scope (ToptAS) approaches upper critical temperatures (upper Tcrit) for aerobic scope in the laboratory, meaning that environmental heating tolerances in wild fishes closely mirror physiological heating tolerance (i.e. upper Tcrit − ToptAS) in captive fishes. Our comparison of field‐ and laboratory‐derived data highlights the ecological significance of aerobic metabolic scope in fishes and suggests wild fish species tend to perform best near the highest temperatures encountered in their range while maintaining a safety margin from the deleterious effects of upper critical temperatures. Abstract:High temperatures and low oxygen in aquatic environments, such as intensive aquaculture or in natural watersheds, inevitably cause stress in fish. Fish are exposed to high temperatures during the summer, which exacerbates hypoxia. Hypoxia (1.2 +/- 0.2 mg/L) under 20 degrees C (20 HG) and 26 degrees C (26 HG) was simulated to induce stress in largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). Related enzymes and genes involved in antioxidant, immune, and apoptotic responses were selected to explore the interactive effects of temperature and hypoxia on largemouth bass. The results showed that malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in plasma, gill, and liver increased in the 26 HG (p < 0.05). Liver superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity increased in the 26 HG. Peak SOD (SOD1, SOD2, SOD3a, and SOD3b), CAT, and GSH-Px mRNA levels in the gill and liver were observed at 12-24 h of stress. The levels of gill and liver total antioxidant capacity, catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities and other enzyme activities and genes in the 26 HG were higher than those in the 20 HG (p < 0.05). The gill and liver add phosphatase and alkaline phosphatase activities increased with time in the 26 HG (p < 0.05), while gill and liver lysozyme activities in the 26 HG were lower than those in the 20 HG (p < 0.05). Tumor necrosis factor-alpha mRNA level was upregulated in the gill and downregulated in the liver at 24 h in the 26 HG. Interleukin (IL)-1 beta and IL-8 mRNA levels were upregulated in the gill and liver in the 26 HG at 24 h, whereas IL-15 mRNA level was downregulated in the 26 HG at 12 h. Transforming growth factor-beta 1 mRNA level was upregulated in the gill in the 20 HG at 24 h, but downregulated in gill and liver in the 26 HG at 24 h. Similarly, IL-10, Hepcidin-1, and Hepcidin-2 showed lower expression levels in the 26 HG. Gill and liver caspase-3 activities were higher in the 26 HG (p < 0.05), and gill caspase-3 activity was higher than that in the liver. The mRNA levels of proapoptotic genes (caspase-3, caspase-8, and caspase-9) were higher in the 26 HG. The present study demonstrates the interactive effects of temperature and hypoxia on stress in largemouth bass gill and liver. These results will be helpful to understand the mechanisms of stress induced by temperature and hypoxia in fish and provide a theoretical basis for aquaculture management.
Multigenerational exposure to temperature influences mitochondrial oxygen fluxes in the Medaka fish (Oryzias latipes)

Abstract:Aim: Thermal sensitivity of cellular metabolism is crucial for animal physiology and survival under climate change. Despite recent efforts, effects of multigenerational exposure to temperature on the metabolic functioning remain poorly understood. We aimed at determining whether multigenerational exposure to temperature modulate the mitochondrial respiratory response of Medaka fish. Methods: We conducted a multigenerational exposure with Medaka fish reared multiple generations at 20 and 30°C (COLD and WARM fish, respectively). We then measured the oxygen consumption of tail muscle at two assay temperatures (20 and 30°C). Mitochondrial function was determined as the respiration supporting ATP synthesis (OXPHOS) and the respiration required to offset proton leak (LEAK(Omy)) in a full factorial design (COLD-20°C; COLD-30°C; WARM-20°C; WARM-30°C). Results: We found that higher OXPHOS and LEAK fluxes at 30°C compared to 20°C assay temperature. At each assay temperature, WARM fish had lower tissue oxygen fluxes than COLD fish. Interestingly, we did not find significant differences in respiratory flux when mitochondria were assessed at the rearing temperature of the fish (i.e., COLD-20°C vs. WARM -30°C). Conclusion: The lower OXPHOS and LEAK capacities in warm fish are likely the result of the multigenerational exposure to warm temperature. This is consistent with a modulatory response of mitochondrial capacity to compensate for potential detrimental effects of warming on metabolism. Finally, the absence of significant differences in respiratory fluxes between COLD-20°C and WARM-30°C fish likely reflects an optimal respiration flux when organisms adapt to their thermal conditions.

Abstract:Species' ranges are shifting in response to increasing temperature and decreasing oxygen in coastal oceans. Forecasting these shifts is limited by information on physiological oxygen thresholds and how they depend on temperature. Here, we adopt an ecophysiological metric, the metabolic index, and estimate its parameters from data collected on marine taxa using phylogenetic trait imputation. The metabolic index is the ratio of temperature-dependent rates of oxygen supply to basal oxygen demands. By applying a hierarchical phylogenetic model to a data set of 74 marine taxa that accounts for both taxonomic distance (from Linnean classification) and biases related to lab methods, we find that the critical oxygen pressure at a reference body size and temperature is remarkably consistent across taxa, ranging 2.9 to 4.9 kPa. In comparison, the estimated effect of temperature on the critical oxygen pressure was more variable among taxa. These findings suggest that species-level differences in oxygen tolerance might be primarily related to differences in body size and preferred temperature. Further, this work provides data-informed distributions of parameters for species that lack experimental data to aid species distribution forecasting.
