Abstract:MRI technology has been widely used in brain connectivity analysis to explore the neurobiological mechanism of ASD. Analysis of brain structural connectivity found atypical growth and development in patients with ASD, excessive growth in infancy, and excessive decline in functions from adolescence to middle age. Functional connectivity analysis suggests that default mode network (DMN) may be related to theory of mind (ToM) and self-referential processing, abnormal salience network (SN) connections can lead to social communication disorders, and abnormal reward network (RN) may be related to repetitive and restricted behaviors. Effective connectivity analysis found that information transmission between brain regions was abnormal in ASD patients, which was associated with social dysfunction. This article introduces the latest development of MRI research, and discusses the differences between ASD patients and normal human brain connections, so as to provide theoretical reference for further investigations of the neural activity mechanism of ASD patients.

Abstract:Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorder that interferes with normal brain development. Brain connectivity may serve as a biomarker for ASD in this respect. This study enrolled a total of 179 children aged 3−10 years (90 typically developed (TD) and 89 with ASD). We used a weighted phase lag index and a directed transfer function to investigate the functional and effective connectivity in children with ASD and TD. Our findings indicated that patients with ASD had local hyper-connectivity of brain regions in functional connectivity and simultaneous significant decrease in effective connectivity across hemispheres. These connectivity abnormalities may help to find biomarkers of ASD.

Abstract:Background and Objective: People with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often have cognitive impairments. Effective connectivity between different areas of the brain is essential for normal cognition. Electroencephalography (EEG) has been widely used in the detection of neurological diseases. Previous studies on detecting ASD with EEG data have focused on frequency-related features. Most of these studies have augmented data by splitting the dataset into time slices or sliding windows. However, such approaches to data augmentation may cause the testing data to be contaminated by the training data. To solve this problem, this study developed a novel method for detecting ASD with EEG data. Methods: This study quantified the functional connectivity of the subject's brain from EEG signals and defined the individual to be the unit of analysis. Publicly available EEG data were gathered from 97 and 92 subjects with ASD and typical development (TD), respectively, while they were at rest or performing a task. Time-series maps of brain functional connectivity were constructed, and the data were augmented using a deep convolutional generative adversarial network. In addition, a combined network for ASD detection, based on convolutional neural network (CNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM), was designed and implemented. Results: Based on functional connectivity, the network achieved classification accuracies of 81.08% and 74.55% on resting state and task state data, respectively. In addition, we found that the functional connectivity of ASD differed from TD primarily in the short-distance functional connectivity of the parietal and occipital lobes and in the distant connections from the right temporoparietal junction region to the left posterior temporal lobe. Conclusions: This paper provides a new perspective for better utilizing EEG to understand ASD. The method proposed in our study is expected to be a reliable tool to assist in the diagnosis of ASD.

Abstract:Introduction: Understanding the neurological basis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is important for the diagnosis and treatment of this mental disorder. Emerging evidence has suggested aberrant functional connectivity of large-scale brain networks in individuals with ASD. However, whether the effective connectivity which measures the causal interactions of these networks is also impaired in these patients remains unclear. Objects: The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effective connectivity of large-scale brain networks in patients with ASD during resting state. Materials and methods: The subjects were 42 autistic children and 127 age-matched normal children from the ABIDE II dataset. We investigated effective connectivity of 7 large-scale brain networks including visual network (VN), default mode network (DMN), cerebellum, sensorimotor network (SMN), auditory network (AN), salience network (SN), frontoparietal network (FPN), with spectral dynamic causality model (spDCM). Parametric empirical Bayesian (PEB) was used to perform second-level group analysis and furnished group commonalities and differences in effective connectivity. Furthermore, we analyzed the correlation between the strength of effective connectivity and patients' clinical characteristics. Results: For both groups, SMN acted like a hub network which demonstrated dense effective connectivity with other large-scale brain network. We also observed significant causal interactions within the "triple networks" system, including DMN, SN and FPN. Compared with healthy controls, children with ASD showed decreased effective connectivity among some large-scale brain networks. These brain networks included VN, DMN, cerebellum, SMN, and FPN. In addition, we also found significant negative correlation between the strength of the effective connectivity from right angular gyrus (ANG_R) of DMN to left precentral gyrus (PreCG_L) of SMN and ADOS-G or ADOS-2 module 4 stereotyped behaviors and restricted interest total (ADOS_G_STEREO_BEHAV) scores. Conclusion: Our research provides new evidence for the pathogenesis of children with ASD from the perspective of effective connections within and between large-scale brain networks. The attenuated effective connectivity of brain networks may be a clinical neurobiological feature of ASD. Changes in effective connectivity of brain network in children with ASD may provide useful information for the diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

Diagnosis of Autism Disorder Based on Deep Network Trained by Augmented EEG Signals

Abstract:Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder typically characterized by abnormalities in social interaction and stereotyped and repetitive behaviors. Diagnosis of autism is mainly based on behavioral tests and interviews. In recent years, studies involving the diagnosis of autism based on analysis of EEG signals have increased. In this paper, recorded signals from people suffering from autism and healthy individuals are divided to without overlap windows considered as images and these images are classified using a two-dimensional Deep Convolution Neural Network (2D-DCNN). Deep learning models require a lot of data to extract the appropriate features and automate data classification. But, in most neurological studies, preparing a large number of measurements is difficult (a few 1000s as compared to million natural images), due to the cost, time, and difficulty of recording these signals. Therefore, to make the appropriate number of data, in our proposed method, some of the data augmentation methods are used. These data augmentation methods are mainly introduced for image databases and should be generalized for EEG-as-an-image database. In this paper, one of the nonlinear image mixing methods is used that mixes the rows of two images. According to the fact that any row in our image is one channel of EEG signal, this method is named channel combination. The result is that in the best case, i.e., augmentation according to channel combination, the average accuracy of 88.29% is achieved in the classification of short signals of healthy people and ASD ones and 100% for ASD and epilepsy ones, using 2D-DCNN. After the decision on joined windows related to each subject, we could achieve 100% accuracy in detecting ASD subjects, according to long EEG signals.

Abstract:A powerful new method is described called Knowledge based functional connectivity Enrichment Analysis (KEA) for interpreting resting state functional connectivity, using circuits that are functionally identified using search terms with the Neurosynth database. The method derives its power by focusing on neural circuits, sets of brain regions that share a common biological function, instead of trying to interpret single functional connectivity links. This provides a novel way of investigating how task- or function-related networks have resting state functional connectivity differences in different psychiatric states, provides a new way to bridge the gap between task and resting-state functional networks, and potentially helps to identify brain networks that might be treated. The method was applied to interpreting functional connectivity differences in autism. Functional connectivity decreases at the network circuit level in 394 patients with autism compared with 473 controls were found in networks involving the orbitofrontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, middle temporal gyrus cortex, and the precuneus, in networks that are implicated in the sense of self, face processing, and theory of mind. The decreases were correlated with symptom severity.

Abstract:Objective: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder, and identifying early autism biomarkers plays a vital role in improving detection and subsequent life outcomes. This study aims to reveal hidden biomarkers in the patterns of functional brain connectivity as recorded by the neuro-magnetic brain responses in children with ASD. Approach: We recorded resting-state MEG signals from thirty children with ASD (4-7 years) and thirty age, gender-matched typically developing (TD) children. We used a complex coherency-based functional connectivity analysis to understand the interactions between different brain regions of the neural system. The work characterizes the large-scale neural activity at different brain oscillations using functional connectivity analysis and assesses the classification performance of coherence-based (COH) measures for autism detection in young children. A comparative study has also been carried out on COH-based connectivity networks both region-wise and sensor-wise to understand frequency-band-specific connectivity patterns and their connections with autism symptomatology. We used Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifiers in the machine learning framework with a 5-fold cross-validation technique. Main results: To classify ASD from TD children, the COH connectivity feature yields the highest classification accuracy of 91.66% in the high gamma (50-100 Hz) frequency band. In region-wise connectivity analysis, the second highest performance is in the delta band (1-4 Hz) after the gamma band. Combining the delta and gamma band features, we achieved a classification accuracy of 95.03% and 93.33% in the ANN and SVM classifiers, respectively. Using classification performance metrics and further statistical analysis, we show that ASD children demonstrate significant hyperconnectivity. Significance: Our findings support the weak central coherency theory in autism detections. Further, despite its lower complexity, we show that region-wise coherence analysis outperforms the sensor-wise connectivity analysis. Altogether, these results demonstrate the functional brain connectivity patterns as an appropriate biomarker of autism in young children.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Although it is well recognized that autism is associated with altered patterns of over- and under-connectivity, specifics are still a matter of debate. Little has been done so far to synthesize available literature using whole-brain electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) recordings.OBJECTIVES: 1) To systematically review the literature on EEG/MEG functional and effective connectivity in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), 2) to synthesize and critically appraise findings related with the hypothesis that ASD is characterized by long-range underconnectivity and local overconnectivity, and 3) to provide, based on the literature, an analysis of tentative factors that are likely to mediate association between ASD and atypical connectivity (e.g., development, topography, lateralization).METHODS: Literature reviews were done using PubMed and PsychInfo databases. Abstracts were screened, and only relevant articles were analyzed based on the objectives of this paper. Special attention was paid to the methodological characteristics that could have created variability in outcomes reported between studies.RESULTS: Our synthesis provides relatively strong support for long-range underconnectivity in ASD, whereas the status of local connectivity remains unclear. This observation was also mirrored by a similar relationship with lower frequencies being often associated with underconnectivity and higher frequencies being associated with both under- and over-connectivity. Putting together these observations, we propose that ASD is characterized by a general trend toward an under-expression of lower-band wide-spread integrative processes compensated by more focal, higher-frequency, locally specialized, and segregated processes. Further investigation is, however, needed to corroborate the conclusion and its generalizability across different tasks. Of note, abnormal lateralization in ASD, specifically an elevated left-over-right EEG and MEG functional connectivity ratio, has been also reported consistently across studies.CONCLUSIONS: The large variability in study samples and methodology makes a systematic quantitative analysis (i.e. meta-analysis) of this body of research impossible. Nevertheless, a general trend supporting the hypothesis of long-range functional underconnectivity can be observed. Further research is necessary to more confidently determine the status of the hypothesis of short-range overconnectivity. Frequency-band specific patterns and their relationships with known symptoms of autism also need to be further clarified.

Abstract:Objective. The paper investigates the presence of autism using the functional brain connectivity measures derived from electro-encephalogram (EEG) of children during face perception tasks. Approach. Phase synchronized patterns from 128-channel EEG signals are obtained for typical children and children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The phase synchronized states or synchrostates temporally switch amongst themselves as an underlying process for the completion of a particular cognitive task. We used 12 subjects in each group (ASD and typical) for analyzing their EEG while processing fearful, happy and neutral faces. The minimal and maximally occurring synchrostates for each subject are chosen for extraction of brain connectivity features, which are used for classification between these two groups of subjects. Among different supervised learning techniques, we here explored the discriminant analysis and support vector machine both with polynomial kernels for the classification task. Main results. The leave one out cross-validation of the classification algorithm gives 94.7% accuracy as the best performance with corresponding sensitivity and specificity values as 85.7% and 100% respectively. Significance. The proposed method gives high classification accuracies and outperforms other contemporary research results. The effectiveness of the proposed method for classification of autistic and typical children suggests the possibility of using it on a larger population to validate it for clinical practice.

Abstract:The aim was to go beyond functional connectivity, by measuring in the first large‐scale study differences in effective, that is directed, connectivity between brain areas in autism compared to controls. Resting‐state functional magnetic resonance imaging was analyzed from the Autism Brain Imaging Data Exchange (ABIDE) data set in 394 people with autism spectrum disorder and 473 controls, and effective connectivity (EC) was measured between 94 brain areas. First, in autism, the middle temporal gyrus and other temporal areas had lower effective connectivities to the precuneus and cuneus, and these were correlated with the Autism Diagnostic Observational Schedule total, communication, and social scores. This lower EC from areas implicated in face expression analysis and theory of mind to the precuneus and cuneus implicated in the sense of self may relate to the poor understanding of the implications of face expression inputs for oneself in autism, and to the reduced theory of mind. Second, the hippocampus and amygdala had higher EC to the middle temporal gyrus in autism, and these are thought to be back projections based on anatomical evidence and are weaker than in the other direction. This may be related to increased retrieval of recent and emotional memories in autism. Third, some prefrontal cortex areas had higher EC with each other and with the precuneus and cuneus. Fourth, there was decreased EC from the temporal pole to the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, and there was evidence for lower activity in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, a brain area implicated in emotion‐related decision‐making. Abstract:Evaluation of cognitive function of autistic children after early intervention has become important for providing promising biomarkers to assess the improvement after cognitive intervention. In this study, we have developed a game-based platform with electroencephalography (EEG) signal recording to investigate gaze following in children. Typically developing (TD) children and children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) were recruited to participate in the gaze-following game with 12-channel EEG signal recording; the corresponding brain oscillations, event-related potentials (ERP), and event-related spectral perturbations were analyzed. Brain functional connections were also evaluated with phase-lag indices (PLIs). The results showed that, relative to the TD children, autistic children had smaller N170, P3a, and late positive potential (LPP) during gaze following, suggesting that they ignored low-level features of social information. Further, autistic children showed increased alpha and beta desynchronization and decreased theta synchronization and functional connectivity. With the development of human-computer interface, physiological signals are essential in future implementation of game-based interfaces to further investigate underlying mechanisms and effective biomarkers. We have demonstrated the possibility of incorporating EEG signals measured by portable applications to evaluate cognitive and social performance in autistic children. This approach has superior flexibility compared with other neuroimaging techniques.

Abstract:In this paper we utilized the concept of stable phase synchronization topography - synchrostates - over the scalp derived from EEG recording for formulating brain connectivity network in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and typically-growing children. A synchronization index is adapted for forming the edges of the connectivity graph capturing the stability of each of the synchrostates. Such network is formed for 11 ASD and 12 control group children. Comparative analyses of these networks using graph theoretic measures show that children with autism have a different modularity of such networks from typical children. This result could pave the way to a new modality for possible identification of ASD from non-invasively recorded EEG data.
Artificial neural networks based prediction for thermal comfort in an academic classroom

Abstract:A predictive models were developed to determine the thermal comfort level for the academic classroom by using artificial neural networks (ANNs). The paper reports experimental and theoretical analysis on a problem of achieving a desired thermal comfort level. The proposed method focused on the classical artificial (feed forward) neural networks (ANN) and the time-series NARX feedback neural networks to achieve the thermal comfort assessed using the predicted mean vote (PMV). The field measurements were conducted in a selected classroom of the Thai-Nichi Institute of Technology (TNI), Thailand. The predicted PMV agreed well with tested PMV data. Therefore, the results would be further demonstrating the feasibility and performance of the approach to achieve the classroom thermal comfort.

Abstract:Autism is one of the most important neurological disorders which leads to problems in a person's social interactions. Improvement of brain imaging technologies and techniques help us to build brain structural and functional networks. Finding networks topology pattern in each of the groups (autism and healthy control) can aid us to achieve an autism disorder screening model. In the present study, we have utilized the genetic algorithm to extract a discriminative sub-network that represents differences between two groups better. In the fitness evaluation phase, for each sub-network, a machine learning model was trained using various entropy features of the sub-network and its performance was measured. Proper model performance implies extracting a good discriminative sub-network. Network entropies can be used as network topological descriptors. The evaluation results indicate the acceptable performance of the proposed screening method based on extracted discriminative sub-networks and the machine learning models succeeded in obtaining a maximum accuracy of 73.1% in structural networks of the UCLA dataset, 82.2% in functional networks of the UCLA dataset, and 66.1% in functional networks of ABIDE datasets.
Features of the resting-state functional brain network of children with autism spectrum disorder: EEG source-level analysis

Abstract:We study the specific features of the organization of the functional brain networks of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) by analyzing at the source level the data obtained in the EEG experiment in the resting-state paradigm. We pay special attention to age-related changes in the characteristics of functional networks during the particularly important age period from early childhood to adolescence. The analyzed experimental groups consisted of 148 ASD children and 173 neurotypical children that were considered as a control group. In the theta band, we revealed an age-independent functional connectivity pattern, consisting of the brain areas responsible for emotions and consciousness, where the strength of connections is higher in neurotypical children compared to ASD children. Moreover, we discovered lower network global clustering in the delta + theta band in ASD children. Thus, more segregated, but more highly connected subnets are formed in the delta + theta band in neurotypical individuals compared to ASD ones. We can suggest increased control over emotions and stronger interaction between the emotional and conscious domains in neurotypical children. In the extended alpha band, we revealed an age-dependent functional connectivity pattern, demonstrating hyper-activation in the ASD group for ages below 6–7 years old and hypo-activation—for older ages. Also, we discuss the development of effective approaches to autism therapy, which should be based on the normalization of aberrant functional connections.
EEG Complexity Analysis of Brain States, Tasks and ASD Risk

Abstract:Autism spectrum disorder is an increasingly prevalent and debilitating neurodevelopmental condition and an electroencephalogram (EEG) diagnostic challenge. Despite large amounts of electrophysiological research over many decades, an EEG biomarker for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has not been found. We hypothesized that reductions in complex dynamical system behaviour in the human central nervous system as part of the macroscale neuronal function during cognitive processes might be detectable in whole EEG for higher-risk ASD adults. In three studies, we compared the medians of correlation dimension, largest Lyapunov exponent, Higuchi's fractal dimension, multiscale entropy, multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis and Kolmogorov complexity during resting, cognitive and social skill tasks in 20 EEG channels of 39 adults over a range of ASD risk. We found heterogeneous complexity distribution with clusters of hierarchical sequences pointing to potential cognitive processing differences, but no clear distinction based on ASD risk. We suggest that there is indication of statistically significant differences between complexity measures of brain states and tasks. Though replication of our studies is needed with a larger sample, we believe that our electrophysiological and analytic approach has potential as a biomarker for earlier ASD diagnosis.

Abstract:Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disease that begins in early childhood and lasts into adulthood. The total prevalence of ASD was 16.8/1000 children aged 8 years in 2014, and the rate has risen rapidly in recent decades. Estimates of ASD prevalence differed by gender, with males being four times more likely than females to be diagnosed with the disorder. [ 1 ] ASD is frequently characterized by a number of mental development disorders, including impaired cognitive, intellectual, social interaction, and language abilities. [ 2 ]

Effective Connectivity Evaluation of Resting-State Brain Networks in Alzheimer’s Disease, Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment, and Normal Aging: An Exploratory Study

Abstract:(1) Background: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease with a high prevalence. Despite the cognitive tests to diagnose AD, there are pitfalls in early diagnosis. Brain deposition of pathological markers of AD can affect the direction and intensity of the signaling. The study of effective connectivity allows the evaluation of intensity flow and signaling pathways in functional regions, even in the early stage, known as amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI). (2) Methods: 16 aMCI, 13 AD, and 14 normal subjects were scanned using resting-state fMRI and T1-weighted protocols. After data pre-processing, the signal of the predefined nodes was extracted, and spectral dynamic causal modeling analysis (spDCM) was constructed. Afterward, the mean and standard deviation of the Jacobin matrix of each subject describing effective connectivity was calculated and compared. (3) Results: The maps of effective connectivity in the brain networks of the three groups were different, and the direction and strength of the causal effect with the progression of the disease showed substantial changes. (4) Conclusions: Impaired information flow in the resting-state networks of the aMCI and AD groups was found versus normal groups. Effective connectivity can serve as a potential marker of Alzheimer’s pathophysiology, even in the early stages of the disease.

Abstract:Brain network analysis is one efficient tool in exploring human brain diseases and can differentiate the alterations from comparative networks. The alterations account for time, mental states, tasks, individuals, and so forth. Furthermore, the changes determine the segregation and integration of functional networks that lead to network reorganization (or reconfiguration) to extend the neuroplasticity of the brain. Exploring related brain networks should be of interest that may provide roadmaps for brain research and clinical diagnosis. Recent electroencephalogram (EEG) studies have revealed the secrets of the brain networks and diseases (or disorders) within and between subjects and have provided instructive and promising suggestions and methods. This review summarized the corresponding algorithms that had been used to construct functional or effective networks on the scalp and cerebral cortex. We reviewed EEG network analysis that unveils more cognitive functions and neural disorders of the human and then explored the relationship between brain science and artificial intelligence which may fuel each other to accelerate their advances, and also discussed some innovations and future challenges in the end.

Altered resting-state functional connectivity of the brain in children with autism spectrum disorder

Abstract:Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a group of neurodevelopmental disorders. Brain mapping has shown that functional brain connections are altered in autism. This study investigated the pattern of brain connection changes in autistic people compared to healthy people. This study aimed to analyze functional abnormalities within the brain due to ASD, using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Resting-state functional magnetic resonance images of 26 individuals with ASD and 26 healthy controls were obtained from the Autism Brain Imaging Data Exchange (ABIDE) database. The DPARSF (data processing assistant for resting-state fMRI) toolbox was used for resting-state functional image processing, and features related to functional connections were extracted from these images. Then, the extracted features from both groups were compared using an Independent Two-Sample T Test, and the features with significant differences between the two groups were identified. Compared with healthy controls, individuals with ASD showed hyper-connectivity in the frontal lobe, anterior cingulum, parahippocampal, left precuneus, angular, caudate, superior temporal, and left pallidum, as well as hypo-connectivity in the precentral, left superior frontal, left middle orbitofrontal, right amygdala, and left posterior cingulum. Our findings show that abnormal functional connectivity exists in patients with ASD. This study makes an important advancement in our understanding of the abnormal neurocircuits causing autism.
