Abstract:As the threat of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria compromises the safety and efficacy of modern healthcare practices, the search for effective treatments is more urgent than ever. For centuries, silver (Ag) has been known to have antibacterial properties and, over the past two decades, Ag-based nanoparticles have gained traction as potential antimicrobials. The antibacterial efficacy of Ag varies with structure, size, and concentration. In the present study, we examined Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) for their antimicrobial activity and safety. We compared different commercially-available AgNPs against gram-negative Escherichia coli , Pseudomonas aeruginosa , Acinetobacter baumannii , and gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus methicillin-resistant and susceptible strains. The most effective formula of AgNPs tested had single-digit (μg/mL) minimum inhibitory concentrations against gram-negative multidrug-resistant clinical bacterial isolates with novel and emerging mechanisms of resistance. The mode of killing was assessed in E. coli and was found to be bactericidal, which is consistent with previous studies using other AgNP formulations. We evaluated cytotoxicity by measuring physiological readouts using the Caenorhabditis elegans model and found that motility was affected, but not the lifespan. Furthermore, we found that at their antibacterial concentrations, AgNPs were non-cytotoxic to any of the mammalian cell lines tested, including macrophages, stem cells, and epithelial cells. More interestingly, our experiments revealed synergy with clinically relevant antibiotics. We found that a non-toxic and non-effective concentration of AgNPs reduced the minimum inhibitory concentrations of aminoglycoside by approximately 22-fold. Because both aminoglycosides and Ag are known to target the bacterial ribosome, we tested whether Ag could also target eukaryotic ribosomes. We measured the rate of mistranslation at bactericidal concentration and found no effect, indicating that AgNPs are not proteotoxic to the host at the tested concentrations. Collectively, our results suggest that AgNPs could have a promising clinical application as a potential stand-alone therapy or antibiotic adjuvants.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are bacteria responsible for several difficult-to-treat infections in humans. These strains have developed, through the process of natural selection. Infections by MRSA are more difficult to treat with standard types of antibiotics and thus more dangerous to human health.OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the bactericidal and antibiotic synergistic effect of silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) against MRSA.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains were isolated from clinical samples and identified, and their susceptibility was tested using the MicroScan® WalkAway-96® SI System. minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined by a microdilution method. Time kill assay was performed by exposing the MRSA isolates to different concentrations of Ag-NPs and monitoring bacterial growth, by measuring optical density at 600 nm. Tissue culture plate was used for determination of the efficacy of Ag-NPs and their combination with antibiotics in the elimination of formed biofilm.RESULTS: The MIC value of Ag-NPs against MRSA was 100 μg/mL. Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus cells were treated with 50, 100 and 200 µg/mL of Ag-NPs and inhibited bacterial growth so that after four hours, almost all treated MRSA cells were dead. All combinations showed effectiveness against MRSA. It was observed that MRSA did not show inhibition zones with ampicillin alone.CONCLUSIONS: Silver Nanoparticles have high therapeutic activity against MRSA, thus can be suggested as an alternative or adjuvant with antibiotics for MRSA treatment. Further studies are required to understand the synergistic effect of Ag-NPs combinations and to assess the safety and efficacy of new antibiotic-Ag-NPs combinations.

Abstract:Background: The increase in nosocomial multidrug resistance and biofilm-forming bacterial infections led to the search for new alternative antimicrobial strategies other than traditional antibiotics. Silver nanoparticles [AgNP] could be a viable treatment due to their wide range of functions, rapid lethality, and minimal resistance potential. The primary aim of this study is to prepare silver nanoparticles and explore their antibacterial activity against biofilms. background: The number of deaths and diseases is expected to increase significantly due to nosocomial multidrug resistance and biofilm-forming bacterial infections. The World Health Organization supports researchers in identifying an alternative antimicrobial that works differently than traditional antibiotics. Silver nanoparticles could be a viable treatment because of their broad spectrum of activity, fast killing power, and low resistance value. Methods: AgNPs with specific physicochemical properties such as size, shape, and surface chemistry were prepared using a chemical reduction technique, and then characterized by DLS, SEM, and FTIR. The activity of AgNPs was tested alone and in combination with some antibiotics against MDR Gram-negative and Gram-positive planktonic bacterial cells and their biofilms. Finally, mammalian cell cytotoxicity and hemolytic activity were tested using VERO and human erythrocytes. Results: The findings of this study illustrate the success of the chemical reduction method in preparing AgNPs. Results showed that AgNPs have MIC values against planktonic organisms ranging from 0.0625 to 0.125 mg/mL, with the greatest potency against gram-negative bacteria. It also effectively destroyed biofilm-forming cells, with minimal biofilm eradication concentrations [MBEC] ranging from 0.125 to 0.25 mg/ml. AgNPs also had lower toxicity profiles for the MTT test when compared to hemolysis to erythrocytes. Synergistic effect was found between AgNPs and certain antibiotics, where the MIC was dramatically reduced, down to less than 0.00195 mg/ml in some cases. Conclusion: The present findings encourage the development of alternative therapies with high efficacy and low toxicity.

Abstract:Background: The study aims to investigate the effect of combining silver nanoparticles (AGNPs) with different antibiotics on multi-drug resistant (MDR) and extensively drug resistant (XDR) isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) and to investigate the mechanism of action of AGNPs. Methods: AGNPs were prepared by reduction of silver nitrate using trisodium citrate and were characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM) in addition to an assessment of cytotoxicity. Clinical isolates of P. aeruginosa were collected, and antimicrobial susceptibility was conducted. Multiple Antibiotic Resistance (MAR) index was calculated, and bacteria were categorized as MDR or XDR. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of gentamicin, ciprofloxacin, ceftazidime, and AGNPs were determined. The mechanism of action of AGNPs was researched by evaluating their effect on biofilm formation, swarming motility, protease, gelatinase, and pyocyanin production. Real-time PCR was performed to investigate the effect on the expression of genes encoding various virulence factors. Results: TEM revealed the spherical shape of AGNPs with an average particle size of 10.84 ± 4.64 nm. AGNPS were safe, as indicated by IC50 (42.5 µg /ml). The greatest incidence of resistance was shown against ciprofloxacin which accounted for 43% of the bacterial isolates. Heterogonous resistance patterns were shown in 63 isolates out of the tested 107. The MAR indices ranged from 0.077 to 0.84. Out of 63 P. aeruginosa isolates, 12 and 13 were MDR and XDR, respectively. The MIC values of AGNPs ranged from 2.65 to 21.25 µg /ml. Combination of AGNPs with antibiotics reduced their MIC by 5-9, 2-9, and 3-10Fold in the case of gentamicin, ceftazidime, and ciprofloxacin, respectively, with synergism being evident. AGNPs produced significant inhibition of biofilm formation and decreased swarming motility, protease, gelatinase and pyocyanin production. PCR confirmed the finding, as shown by decreased expression of genes encoding various virulence factors. Conclusion: AGNPs augment gentamicin, ceftazidime, and ciprofloxacin against MDR and XDR Pseudomonas isolates. The efficacy of AGNPs can be attributed to their effect on the virulence factors of P. aeruginosa. The combination of AGNPs with antibiotics is a promising strategy to attack resistant isolates of P. aeruginosa.

Abstract:The emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, particularly the most hazardous pathogens, namely Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter spp. (ESKAPE)-pathogens pose a significant threat to global health. Current antimicrobial therapies, including those targeting biofilms, have shown limited effectiveness against these superbugs. Nanoparticles, specifically silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), have emerged as a promising alternative for combating bacterial infections. In this study, two types of AgNPs with different physic-chemical properties were evaluated for their antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities against clinical ESKAPE strains. Two types of silver nanoparticles were assessed: spherical silver nanoparticles (AgNPs-1) and cubic-shaped silver nanoparticles (AgNPs-2). AgNPs-2, characterized by a cubic shape and higher surface-area-to-volume ratio, exhibited superior antimicrobial activity compared to spherical AgNPs-1. Both types of AgNPs demonstrated the ability to inhibit biofilm formation and disrupt established biofilms, leading to membrane damage and reduced viability of the bacteria. These findings highlight the potential of AgNPs as effective antibacterial agents against ESKAPE pathogens, emphasizing the importance of nanoparticle characteristics in determining their antimicrobial properties. Further research is warranted to explore the underlying mechanisms and optimize nanoparticle-based therapies for the management of infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Abstract:The rapid formation of microbial resistance to modern antibacterial drugs requires to search for new, alternative therapies. It is known that some organisms, such as plants, algae, fungi, are able to convert inorganic metal ions into metal nanoparticles due to the recovery process carried out by proteins, sugars and metabolites contained in the tissues and cells of these organisms. At the same time, many plants (e.g., plantain, yarrow, wormwood, turmeric long, calendula, marsh bagulnik, etc.) and metals (copper, silver, gold, zinc, etc.) themselves have antibacterial properties, so that metal nanoparticles obtained by biological method, or via “Green” synthesis method, from extracts of such plants can become a current alternative to many modern antibacterial drugs. The antibacterial mechanism of action of nanoparticles depends on the type of microorganisms affected, as well as on the type of nanoparticles, their concentration, size, and how they are obtained. Based on this, the study of the antibacterial effect of nanoparticles is one of the promising directions of solving the problem of microbial antibiotic resistance. There was examined antibacterial effect of metal nanoparticles containing silver, copper and gold obtained by biological method from the salts of AgNO3, CuSO4, H[AuCl4] metals, respectively, and the extract of the plant — turmeric long (lat. Curcuma longa) — related to the following bacteria strain collection: E. coli (ATCC 25922), S. aureus (ATCC 25923), MRSA (ATCC 38591) and polyresistant clinical strains isolated from patients of the Regional clinical hospital (Krasnoyarsk) — К. рneumoniae, strain 104, P. аeruginosa, strain 40, P. аeruginosa, strain 215, А. baumannii, strain 210, А. baumannii, strain 211. Study allowed to identify the minimum suppressive concentration of nanoparticles by the method of serial dilutions (MUK 4.2.1890-04) with azurin dye. It was proved that metal nanoparticles exhibit different antibacterial efficacy depending on the type of nanometals used and bacterial cultures. Copper nanoparticles have the highest antibacterial activity, and gold nanoparticles have the lowest. The most marked antibacterial effect was observed against clinical polyresistant strains. Metal nanoparticles can become an alternative to the currently known antibacterial drugs, but despite the high efficiency of nanoparticles against polyresistant to antibacterial drugs microorganisms in vitro, it is necessary to take into account their possible toxic effect on live tissues, which requires further study in experiments in vivo.

Abstract:The high wave of antibiotic bacterial resistance has addressed an importance for administration of different antibacterial agents, as silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs). However, many investigators still suffer conflict in the mechanistic antimicrobial action of Ag NPs and Ag + ions. In this regard, our study investigated the comparative antimicrobial action of different sizes of Ag NPs as 8 (nAg1) and 29 (nAg2) nm, in comparison with silver nitrate (AgNO 3 ) against five different bacterial species; Aeromonas hydrophila ( A. hydrophila ), Pseudomonas putida ( Ps. putida ), Escherichia coli ( E. coli ), Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ), and Bacillus subtilis ( B. subtilis ) using agar diffusion assay and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). The key role of the size of nanomaterials was detected, as the smaller Ag NPs (nAg1) showed more antimicrobial action than the larger particles. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies demonstrated the different mechanistic antibacterial actions of Ag NPs and AgNO 3 . The effect of combining Ag NPs with antibiotics was also investigated. Synergistic effect of combining Ag NPs with ampicillin was detected against S. aureus , in a size-dependent manner as well. To summarize, our results point towards the major role played by the size of Ag NPs in their antimicrobial effects and the different toxic mechanisms of actions induced by Ag NPs and AgNO 3 .

Abstract:This review highlights the different modes of synthesizing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) from their elemental state to particle format and their mechanism of action against multidrug-resistant and biofilm-forming bacterial pathogens. Various studies have demonstrated that the AgNPs cause oxidative stress, protein dysfunction, membrane disruption, and DNA damage in bacteria, ultimately leading to bacterial death. AgNPs have also been found to alter the adhesion of bacterial cells to prevent biofilm formation. The benefits of using AgNPs in medicine are, to some extent, counter-weighted by their toxic effect on humans and the environment. In this review, we have compiled recent studies demonstrating the antibacterial activity of AgNPs, and we are discussing the known mechanisms of action of AgNPs against bacterial pathogens. Ongoing clinical trials involving AgNPs are briefly presented. A particular focus is placed on the mechanism of interaction of AgNPs with bacterial biofilms, which are a significant pathogenicity determinant. A brief overview of the use of AgNPs in other medical applications (e.g., diagnostics, promotion of wound healing) and the non-medical sectors is presented. Finally, current drawbacks and limitations of AgNPs use in medicine are discussed, and perspectives for the improved future use of functionalized AgNPs in medical applications are presented.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The emergence of the global problem of multi-drug resistant bacteria (MDR) is closely related to the improper use of antibiotics, which gives birth to an urgent need for antimicrobial innovation in the medical and health field. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) show significant antibacterial potential because of their unique physical and chemical properties. By accurately regulating the morphology, size and surface properties of AgNPs, the antibacterial properties of AgNPs can be effectively enhanced and become a next generation antibacterial material with great development potential. OBJECTIVE: The detection of the inhibitory effect of AgNPs on MDR provides more possibilities for the research and development of new antimicrobial agents. METHODS: Promote the formation of AgNPs by redox reaction; determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of AgNPs to bacteria by broth microdilution method; evaluate the killing efficacy of AgNPs against multi-drug-resistant bacteria by plate counting; evaluate the inhibitory effect of AgNPs on biofilm construction by crystal violet staining; study the drug resistance of bacteria by gradually increasing the concentration of AgNPs; and detect the toxicity of AgNPs to cells by CCK-8 method. RESULTS: AgNPs has a significant bactericidal effect on a variety of drug-resistant bacteria. After exposure to AgNPs solution for 12 hours, the number of E. coli decreased sharply, and S. aureus was basically eliminated after 16 hours. In particular, AgNPs showed stronger inhibition against Gram-negative bacteria. In addition, AgNPs can effectively hinder the formation of bacterial biofilm, and its inhibitory effect increases with the increase of AgNPs solution concentration. When AgNPs is used for a long time, the development of bacterial resistance to it is slow. From the point of view of safety, AgNPs has no harmful effects on organisms and has biosafety. CONCLUSION: AgNPs can inhibit MDR, and the bacteriostatic ability of Gram-negative bacteria is higher than that of Gram-positive bacteria. It can also inhibit the formation of bacterial biofilm, avoid drug resistance and reduce cytotoxicity.

Abstract:Introduction: The emergence of multi-drug-resistant bacteria is one of the main concerns in the health sector worldwide. The conventional strategies for treatment and prophylaxis against microbial infections include the use of antibiotics. However, these drugs are failing due to the increasing antimicrobial resistance. The unavailability of effective antibiotics highlights the need to discover effective alternatives to combat bacterial infections. One option is the use of metallic nanoparticles, which are toxic to some microorganisms due to their nanometric size. Methods: In this study we (1) synthesize and characterize bismuth and silver nanoparticles, (2) evaluate the antibacterial activity of NPs against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli in several infection models ( in vivo models: infected wound and sepsis and in vitro model: mastitis), and we (3) determine the cytotoxic effect on several cell lines representative of the skin tissue. Results and discussion: We obtained bimetallic nanoparticles of bismuth and silver in a stable aqueous solution from a single reaction by chemical synthesis. These nanoparticles show antibacterial activity on S. aureus and E. coli in vitro without cytotoxic effects on fibroblast, endothelial vascular, and mammary epithelium cell lines. In an infected-wound mice model, antibacterial effect was observed, without effect on in vitro mastitis and sepsis models.

Abstract:Multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria constitute a global health issue. Over the past ten years, interest in nanoparticles, particularly metallic ones, has grown as potential antibacterial candidates. However, as there is no consensus about the procedure to characterize the metallic nanoparticles (MNPs; i.e., metallic aggregates) and evaluate their antibacterial activity, it is impossible to conclude about their real effectiveness as a new antibacterial agent. To give part of the answer to this question, 12 nm gold and silver nanoparticles have been prepared by a chemical approach. After their characterization by transmission electronic microscopy (TEM), Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), and UltraViolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, their surface accessibility was tested through the catalytic reduction of the 4-nitrophenol, and their stability in bacterial culture medium was studied. Finally, the antibacterial activities of 12 nm gold and silver nanoparticles facing Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli have been evaluated using the broth microdilution method. The results show that gold nanoparticles have a weak antibacterial activity (i.e., slight inhibition of bacterial growth) against the two bacteria tested. In contrast, silver nanoparticles have no activity on S. aureus but demonstrate a high antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 128 μmol/L. This high antibacterial activity is also maintained against two MDR-E. coli strains.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the antibacterial activity and mechanism of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) against multidrug-resistant P. aeruginosa . Methods: The antimicrobial effect of AgNPs on clinical isolates of resistant P . aeruginosa was assessed by minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC). In multidrug-resistant P . aeruginosa , the alterations of morphology and structure were observed by the transmission electron microscopy (TEM); the differentially expressed proteins were analyzed by quantitative proteomics; the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was assayed by H2DCF-DA staining; the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POD) was chemically measured and the apoptosis-like effect was determined by flow cytometry. Results: Antimicrobial tests revealed that AgNPs had highly bactericidal effect on the drug-resistant or multidrug-resistant P . aeruginosa with the MIC range of 1.406–5.625 μg/mL and the MBC range of 2.813–5.625 μg/mL. TEM showed that AgNPs could enter the multidrug-resistant bacteria and impair their morphology and structure. The proteomics quantified that, in the AgNP-treated bacteria, the levels of SOD, CAT, and POD, such as alkyl hydroperoxide reductase and organic hydroperoxide resistance protein, were obviously high, as well as the significant upregulation of low oxygen regulatory oxidases, including cbb3-type cytochrome c oxidase subunit P2, N2, and O2. Further results confirmed the excessive production of ROS. The antioxidants, reduced glutathione and ascorbic acid, partially antagonized the antibacterial action of AgNPs. The apoptosis-like rate of AgNP-treated bacteria was remarkably higher than that of the untreated bacteria ( P <0.01). Conclusion: This study proved that AgNPs could play antimicrobial roles on the multidrug-resistant P . aeruginosa in a concentration- and time-dependent manner. The main mechanism involves the disequilibrium of oxidation and antioxidation processes and the failure to eliminate the excessive ROS. Abstract:The current research was focused on the characterization and antimicrobial activity of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) produced by Bacillus licheniformis NM120-17. The synthesis was initially observed by a colour change from pale yellow to brown which was further confirmed by UV-Vis spectroscopy. The AgNPs were characterized using TEM, EDAX and FTIR. The synthesized nanoparticles were found to be spherical and uniformly distributed with a size in the range of 9-27.5 nm. The antibacterial activities and acting mechanism of AgNPs were studied with respect to Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli by measuring the growth curves, protein and reducing sugar leakage, respiratory chain dehydrogenase activity, as well as the formation of bactericidal reactive oxygen species (ROS). The experimental results indicated that 50 mg/ml AgNPs could completely inhibit the growth of bacterial cells and destroy the permeability of bacterial membranes and depress the activity of some membranous enzymes, which cause bacteria to die eventually. These nontoxic nanomaterials, which can be prepared in a simple and cost-effective manner, may be suitable for the formulation of new types of bactericidal materials.

Abstract:Nanotechnology is expected to open new avenues to fight and prevent disease using atomic scale tailoring of materials. Among the most promising nanomaterials with antibacterial properties are metallic nanoparticles, which exhibit increased chemical activity due to their large surface to volume ratios and crystallographic surface structure. The study of bactericidal nanomaterials is particularly timely considering the recent increase of new resistant strains of bacteria to the most potent antibiotics. This has promoted research in the well known activity of silver ions and silver-based compounds, including silver nanoparticles. The present work studies the effect of silver nanoparticles in the range of 1-100 nm on Gram-negative bacteria using high angle annular dark field (HAADF) scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). Our results indicate that the bactericidal properties of the nanoparticles are size dependent, since the only nanoparticles that present a direct interaction with the bacteria preferentially have a diameter of approximately 1-10 nm.

The present study aimed to determine the antimicrobial activity of silver (Ag) and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles alone and in combination with antibiotics against reference strains of pathogenic microorganisms as Staphylococcus aureus ( Staph. aureus ), Salmonella enterica subsp. Bukuru, Escherichia coli ( E.coli ) and Candida albicans ( C. albicans ). Methods: The antimicrobial effect of metal-nanoparticles (AgNPs and ZnONPS) and in combination with antibiotics was studied using the normal disc-diffusion method. Results: Both AgNPs and ZnONPs had increased antibacterial activity with an increase in their concentration against Gram-positive bacterium ( Staph. aureus ), Gram-negative bacteria ( E. coli and Salmonella spp) and no effect on C. albicans . The synergistic effect of antibiotics (azithromycin, cefotaxime, cefuroxime, fosfomycin and chloramphenicol) against E. coli was significantly increased in the presence of AgNPs compared to antibiotic only. However, all antibiotics had a synergistic effect in the presence of AgNps against Salmonella spp. On the other hand, the antibacterial action of AgNPs with oxacillin and neomycin antibiotics against Staph. aureus was significantly decreased in comparison with antibiotics only. The synergistic effect of antibiotics (azithromycin, oxacillin, cefotaxime, cefuroxime, fosfomycin and oxytetracycline) against E. coli was significantly increased in presence of ZnONPs compared to antibiotic only and also the synergistic effect of antibiotics (azithromycin, cefotaxime, cefuroxime, fosfomycin, chloramphenicol and oxytetracycline) against Staph. aureus was significantly increased in the presence of ZnONPs compared to antibiotics only. On the other hand, most antibiotics had an antagonistic effect in presence of ZnONps against Salmonella spp. Conclusion: AgNPs and ZnONPs demonstrate a good synergistic effect with antibiotics and this may open the door for a future combination therapy against pathogenic bacteria. Abstract:Research for novel compounds that may block bacterial development has continued and prompted by antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The expenses of community for health care as a result of antibiotic resistance has indeed been remarkable during the last decades and demand immediate of medical attention. Consequently, this research presents the antibacterial effect of genuine metal oxide nanoparticles against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Klebsiella pneumoniae that have been isolated from urinary tract infection patients. This is because metal oxide nanomaterials have already been utilised a compromise with some of its comprehensive implementations throughout the pharmaceutical and biological disciplines of nano-biotechnology. The biological activity of zirconium oxide (ZrO 2 ) nanoparticles against bacteria is investigated using agar well diffusion approach. The antibacterial efficiency of nanoparticles on E. coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae using both qualitative and quantitative assessment approaches is appraised. Specifically, an aseptic technique is used to collect fifty urine samples into sterile tubes. To inoculate the patients' midstream urine on both blood agar and MacConkey agar plates, the direct streaking approach is employed. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X–Ray diffraction (XRD) techniques are used to signify the physical features nanoparticle including shape and size. The identified cubic components of SEM and XRD techniques indicate the existence of ZrO 2 nanoparticles and magnetic nanoparticles of particle size ranges between 5 to 50 nm. According to the data, ZrO 2 nanoparticles have a bacteriostatic effect at 0.1 mg/ml with an absorption of 0.2 and a bactericidal effect at 2 mg/ml with an absorption of 0.007 on E. col isolates. Additionally, ZrO 2 nanoparticles exhibit bacteriostatic (at 0.1 mg/ml with absorption of 0.3) and bactericidal (at 2 mg/ml with absorption of 0.001) effects on Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates. Among all the antibiotics utilised, gentamicin shows the lowest rate of resistance, suggesting that it is more effective against E. coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae when ZrO 2 is presented.

Abstract:Phytoplankton size structure plays an important role in ocean biogeochemical processes. The light absorption spectra of phytoplankton provide a great potential for retrieving phytoplankton size structure because of the strong dependence on the packaging effect caused by phytoplankton cell size and on different pigment compositions related to phytoplankton taxonomy. In this study, we investigated the variability in light absorption spectra of phytoplankton in relation to the size structure. Based on this, a new approach was proposed for estimating phytoplankton size fractions. Our approach use the spectral shape of the normalized phytoplankton absorption coefficient (a(ph)(λ)) through principal component analysis (PCA). Values of a(ph)(λ) were normalized to remove biomass effects, and PCA was conducted to separate the spectral variance of normalized a(ph)(λ) into uncorrelated principal components (PCs). Spectral variations captured by the first four PC modes were used to build relationships with phytoplankton size fractions. The results showed that PCA had powerful ability to capture spectral variations in normalized a(ph)(λ), which were significantly related to phytoplankton size fractions. For both hyperspectral a(ph)(λ) and multiband a(ph)(λ), our approach is applicable. We evaluated our approach using wide in situ data collected from coastal waters and the global ocean, and the results demonstrated a good and robust performance in estimating phytoplankton size fractions in various regions. The model performance was further evaluated by a(ph)(λ) derived from in situ remote sensing reflectance (R(rs)(λ)) with a quasi-analytical algorithm. Using R(rs)(λ) only at six bands, accurate estimations of phytoplankton size fractions were obtained, with R(2) values of 0.85, 0.61, and 0.76, and root mean-square errors of 0.130, 0.126, and 0.112 for micro-, nano-, and picophytoplankton, respectively. Our approach provides practical basis for remote estimation of phytoplankton size structure using a(ph)(λ) derived from satellite observations or rapid field instrument measurements in the future.
