Abstract:Amblyopia causes a contrast sensitivity deficit in the amblyopic eye. However there is also evidence of additional deficits affecting functions further along the processing stream, e.g. an impairment in global motion processing that is not specific to the amblyopic eye. Perceptual learning studies on normal observers have demonstrated significant improvements in global motion tasks. On this basis, we have applied these methods in an attempt to: i) improve global motion processing in amblyopic observers, and ii) determine whether the learning effects are specific to the trained eye. We tested 5 normals and 6 amblyopes on a motion direction discrimination task. Our stimuli were a field of isotropic log-Gabors with peak spatial frequency of 3 c/deg (spatially band-pass "dots"). In each trial we first presented a stimulus with a fixed reference motion direction, and then a test stimulus with its motion direction defined as an offset from that reference. The observer responded whether the second interval's direction was clockwise or anti-clockwise relative to the first. The difficulty of the task was varied by modifying the offset angle. We measured monocular baseline thresholds for each eye (day 1), and then conducted 10 days of monocular training for 40 minutes/day (days 2-11). Half of the amblyopes trained with their amblyopic eye, half with their fellow eye. After training we then made two retest measurements for each eye (days 12 and 13). Surprisingly, we do not find the expected training effect in either our normal or our amblyopic observers. Thresholds were generally lower following training, however this difference is not statistically significant. It is possible that the critical difference between our study and those that have found large training effects is the spatially broadband nature of the stimuli used in previous studies. Metacognition in Putative Magno- and Parvocellular Vision

Abstract:A major distinction in early visual processing is the magnocellular (MC) and parvocellular (PC) pathways. The MC pathway preferentially processes motion, transient events, and low spatial frequencies, while the PC pathway preferentially processes color, sustained events, and high spatial frequencies. Prior work has theorized that the PC pathway more strongly contributes to conscious object recognition via projections to the ventral "what" visual pathway, whereas the MC pathway underlies non-conscious, action-oriented motion and localization processing via the dorsal stream "where/how" pathway. This invites the question: Are we equally aware of activity in both pathways? And if not, do task demands interact with which pathway is more accessible to awareness? We investigated this question in a set of two studies measuring participant's metacognition for stimuli biased towards MC or PC processing. The "Steady/Pulsed Paradigm" presents brief stimuli under two conditions thought to favor either pathway. In the "pulsed" condition, the target appears atop a strong luminance pedestal which theoretically saturates the transient MC response and leaves the PC pathway to process the stimulus. In the "steady" condition, the stimulus is identical except the luminance pedestal is constant throughout the trial, rather than flashed alongside the target. This theoretically adapts the PC neurons and leaves MC for processing. Experiment 1 was a spatial localization task thought to rely on information relayed from the MC pathway. Using both a model-based and model-free approach to quantify participants' metacognitive sensitivity to their own task performance, we found greater metacognition in the steady (MC-biased) condition. Experiment 2 was a fine-grained orientation-discrimination task more reliant on PC pathway information. Our results show an abolishment of the MC pathway advantage seen in Experiment 1 and suggest that the metacognitive advantage for MC processing may hold for stimulus localization tasks only. More generally, our results highlight the need to consider the possibility of differential access to low-level stimulus properties in studies of visual metacognition.

Inhomogeneous Visual Acuity Correlated with Idiosyncratic Mislocalization

Abstract:Accurately perceiving the positions of objects is a critical visual function. Recent research demonstrated that observers consistently mislocalize brief objects throughout the visual field in an idiosyncratic manner: observes mislocalize objects in different ways in different parts of the visual field (Kosovicheva & Whitney, 2017). One possibility is that these fingerprints of distorted space perception are related to differences in the resolution of position coding throughout the visual field. If so, there may be systematic differences in acuity throughout the visual field that correlate with the mislocalizations. Here, we tested this. In a first experiment, we constructed localization bias maps throughout the visual field for individual observers. Observers were asked to localize a brief noise patch target with a mouse cursor. The possible target locations covered much of the visual field. Mislocalization (constant) errors were recorded and found to be significant and idiosyncratic, such that each observer mislocalized targets consistently in a unique way throughout the visual field. Because of the mislocalizations, there were some regions of the visual field that were effectively compressed (sinks) and other regions that were expanded (sources). In a second experiment, we tested whether these individualized perceptual distortion maps correlated with differences in visual resolution. We tested Vernier acuity thresholds at 6 locations in each observer’s visual field, specifically 4 in the compressed and expanded regions identified in the first Experiment and 2 in neutral regions. Interestingly, we found significantly higher acuity in perceptually compressed regions than in the expanded regions. The results reveal a primitive inhomogeneity in the spatial resolution of position coding, which may then bias assigned object position. This inhomogeneity indicates that our visual system evidently has a compensatory mechanism to correct the individualized biases, to establish an accurate and stable position representation that is ultimately consistent between observers.

Abstract:Adaptive behaviour depends on the ability to introspect accurately about one's own performance. Whether this metacognitive ability is supported by the same mechanisms across different tasks is unclear. We investigated the relationship between metacognition of visual perception and metacognition of visual short-term memory (VSTM). Experiments 1 and 2 required subjects to estimate the perceived or remembered orientation of a grating stimulus and rate their confidence. We observed strong positive correlations between individual differences in metacognitive accuracy between the two tasks. This relationship was not accounted for by individual differences in task performance or average confidence, and was present across two different metrics of metacognition and in both experiments. A model-based analysis of data from a third experiment showed that a cross-domain correlation only emerged when both tasks shared the same task-relevant stimulus feature. That is, metacognition for perception and VSTM were correlated when both tasks required orientation judgements, but not when the perceptual task was switched to require contrast judgements. In contrast with previous results comparing perception and long-term memory, which have largely provided evidence for domain-specific metacognitive processes, the current findings suggest that metacognition of visual perception and VSTM is supported by a domain-general metacognitive architecture, but only when both domains share the same task-relevant stimulus feature.

Abstract:Recent work in motor control demonstrates that humans take their own motor uncertainty into account, adjusting the timing and goals of movement so as to maximize expected gain. Visual sensitivity varies dramatically with retinal location and target, and models of optimal visual search typically assume that the visual system takes retinal inhomogeneity into account in planning eye movements. Such models can then use the entire retina rather than just the fovea to speed search. Using a simple decision task, we evaluated human ability to compensate for retinal inhomogeneity. We firstmeasured observers' sensitivity for targets, varying contrast and eccentricity. Observers then repeatedly chose between targets differing in eccentricity and contrast, selecting the one they would prefer to attempt: e. g., a low contrast target at 2u versus a high contrast target at 10 degrees. Observers knew they would later attempt some of their chosen targets and receive rewards for correct classifications. We evaluated performance in three ways. Equivalence: Do observers' judgments agree with their actual performance? Do they correctly trade off eccentricity and contrast and select the more discriminable target in each pair? Transitivity: Are observers' choices self-consistent? Dominance: Do observers understand that increased contrast improves performance? Decreased eccentricity? All observers exhibited patterned failures of equivalence, and seven out of eight observers failed transitivity. There were significant but small failures of dominance. All these failures together reduced their winnings by 10%-18%.
Unreferenced spatial localization under monocular and dichoptic viewing conditions

Abstract:Knowledge of eye position in the brain is critical for localization of objects in space. To investigate the accuracy and precision of eye position feedback in an unreferenced environment, subjects with normal ocular alignment attempted to localize briefly presented targets during monocular and dichoptic viewing. In the task, subjects' used a computer mouse to position a response disk at the remembered location of the target. Under dichoptic viewing (with red (right eye)-green (left eye) glasses), target and response disks were presented to the same or alternate eyes, leading to four conditions [green target-green response cue (LL), green-red (LR), red-green (RL), and red-red (RR)]. Time interval between target and response disks was varied and localization errors were the difference between the estimated and real positions of the target disk. Overall, the precision of spatial localization (variance across trials) became progressively worse with time. Under dichoptic viewing, localization errors were significantly greater for alternate-eye trials as compared to same-eye trials and were correlated to the average phoria of each subject. Our data suggests that during binocular dissociation, spatial localization may be achieved by combining a reliable versional efference copy signal with a proprioceptive signal that is unreliable perhaps because it is from the wrong eye or is too noisy.

Abstract:The ability to detect the absolute location of sensory stimuli can be quantified with either error-based metrics derived from single-trial localization errors or regression-based metrics derived from a linear regression of localization responses on the true stimulus locations. Here we tested the agreement between these two approaches in estimating accuracy and precision in a large sample of 188 subjects who localized auditory stimuli from different azimuthal locations. A subsample of 57 subjects was subsequently exposed to audiovisual stimuli with a consistent spatial disparity before performing the sound localization test again, allowing us to additionally test which of the different metrics best assessed correlations between the amount of crossmodal spatial recalibration and baseline localization performance. First, our findings support a distinction between accuracy and precision. Localization accuracy was mainly reflected in the overall spatial bias and was moderately correlated with precision metrics. However, in our data, the variability of single-trial localization errors (variable error in error-based metrics) and the amount by which the eccentricity of target locations was overestimated (slope in regression-based metrics) were highly correlated, suggesting that intercorrelations between individual metrics need to be carefully considered in spatial perception studies. Secondly, exposure to spatially discrepant audiovisual stimuli resulted in a shift in bias toward the side of the visual stimuli (ventriloquism aftereffect) but did not affect localization precision. The size of the aftereffect shift in bias was at least partly explainable by unspecific test repetition effects, highlighting the need to account for inter-individual baseline differences in studies of spatial learning.

Abstract:The purpose of the experiments described here was to investigate global image processing using methods that require global processing while eliminating or compensating for low level abnormalities: visibility, shape perception and positional uncertainty. In order to accomplish this we used a closed figure made up of Gabor patches either in noise or on a blank field. The stimuli were circular or elliptical contours, formed by N equally spaced Gabor patches. We performed two separate experiments: In one experiment we fixed N and varied the aspect ratio using a staircase to determine the threshold aspect ratio; in the second experiment we held the aspect ratio constant (at twice the threshold aspect ratio) and varied N in order to measure the threshold number of elements required to judge the shape. Our results confirm and extend previous studies showing that humans with naturally occurring amblyopia show deficits in contour processing. Our results show that the deficits depend strongly on spatial scale (target size and spatial frequency). The deficit in global contour processing is substantially greater in noise (where contour-linking is required) than on a blank field. The magnitude of the deficits is modest when low-level deficits (reduced visibility, increased positional uncertainty, and abnormal shape perception) are minimized, and does not seem to depend much on acuity, crowding or stereoacuity. The residual deficits reported here cannot be simply ascribed to reduced visibility or increased positional uncertainty, and we therefore conclude that these are genuine deficits in global contour segregation and integration.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Sleep deprivation (SD) impairs cognitive performance but its impact on metacognition – i.e. the ability to introspect about cognitive performance – is less clear. A few studies have assessed metacognitive accuracy after acute sleep deprivation in tasks of executive functions and found no impairments. However, whether SD has no influence on metacognition of other cognitive domains such as perception has not been investigated. In this study, we examined how metacognitive accuracy in perceptual decision tasks is affected by 32 hours of sustained wakefulness. Methods 14 participants (3 males, aged 20-32) repeated four visual psychophysical tasks (orientation discrimination, two-flicker fusion, vernier acuity and a novel face/house discrimination in noise) at regular intervals during 32 hours of sustained wakefulness and once after 8 hours recovery sleep. In each task, we concurrently measured quantitative indices of perceptual threshold, confidence rating and metacognitive accuracy (i.e. how well confidence ratings discriminate correct vs incorrect perceptual judgements). Results We observed a gradual increase of perceptual threshold in all tasks with increased time awake. Furthermore, metacognitive accuracy gradually decreased during sustained wakefulness in all tasks. Specifically, the decrease in metacognitive accuracy was driven by over-estimated confidence in trials when participants made incorrect perceptual judgements. After recovery sleep, perceptual thresholds were reset to baseline for all tasks, while metacognitive accuracy was reset to baseline for the orientation discrimination and two-flicker fusion tasks only. Conclusion We showed that sustained wakefulness up to 32 hours increasingly impairs metacognitive accuracy in perceptual decision tasks. These results are consistent across different perceptual tasks, but are in contrast to previous studies showing preserved metacognition of executive functions after SD. Overall, this suggests that the fundamental mechanisms of perceptual metacognition may be similarly affected by sleep deprivation, but that SD selectively impacts different domains of metacognition, such as perceptual metacognition and metacognition of executive functions. Abstract:We often effortlessly take the perceptual perspective of others: we represent some aspect of the environment that others currently perceive. However, taking someone's perspective can interfere with one's perceptual processing: another person's gaze can spontaneously affect our ability to detect stimuli in a scene. But it is still unclear whether our cognitive evaluation of those judgements is also affected. In this study, we investigated whether social perspective-taking can influence participants' metacognitive judgements about their perceptual responses. Participants performed a contrast detection task with a task-irrelevant avatar oriented either congruently or incongruently to the stimulus location. By "blindfolding" the avatar, we tested the influence of social perspective-taking versus domain-general directional orienting. Participants had higher accuracy and perceptual sensitivity with a congruent avatar regardless of the blindfold, suggesting a directional cueing effect. However, their metacognitive efficiency was modulated only by the congruency of a seeing avatar. These results suggest that perceptual metacognitive ability can be socially enhanced by sharing perception of the same objects with others.

Violated predictions enhance the representational fidelity of visual features in perception

Abstract:Predictive coding theories argue that recent experience establishes expectations that generate prediction errors when violated. In humans, brain imaging studies have revealed unique signatures of violated predictions in sensory cortex, but the perceptual consequences of these effects remain unknown. We had observers perform a dual-report task on the orientation of briefly presented gratings within predictable or random sequences, while we recorded their pupil size as an index of surprise. Observers first made a speeded response to categorize grating orientation (clockwise or counterclockwise from vertical), then reproduced the orientation without time pressure by rotating a bar. This allowed us to separately assess response speed and precision for the same stimuli. Critically, on half the trials, the target orientation deviated from the spatiotemporal structure established by the preceding gratings. Observers responded faster and more accurately to unexpected gratings, and pupillometry provided physiological evidence of observers' surprise in response to these events. In a second experiment, we cued the spatial location and timing of the grating and found the same pattern of results, demonstrating that unexpected orientation information is sufficient to produce faster and more precise responses, even when the location and timing of the relevant stimuli are fully expected. These findings indicate that unexpected events are prioritized by the visual system both in terms of processing speed and representational fidelity.

Idiosyncratic Perception: a Link Between Acuity, Perceived Position and Apparent Size

Abstract:Perceiving the positions of objects is a prerequisite for most other visual and visuomotor functions, but human perception of object position varies from one individual to the next. The source of these individual differences in perceived position and their perceptual consequences are unknown. Here, we tested whether idiosyncratic biases in the underlying representation of visual space propagate across different levels of visual processing. In Experiment 1, using a position matching task, we found stable, observer-specific compressions and expansions within local regions throughout the visual field. We then measured Vernier acuity (Experiment 2) and perceived size of objects (Experiment 3) across the visual field and found that individualized spatial distortions were closely associated with variations in both visual acuity and apparent object size. Our results reveal idiosyncratic biases in perceived position and size, originating from a heterogeneous spatial resolution that carries across the visual hierarchy.

Abstract:Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) were developed for amnesic, neurotoxic, and diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (ASP, NSP, and DSP) toxins and for yessotoxin. These assays, along with a commercially available paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) ELISA, were used to test the feasibility of an ELISA-based screening system. It was concluded that such a system to identify suspect shellfish samples, for subsequent analysis by methods approved by international regulatory authorities, is feasible. The assays had sufficient sensitivity and can be used on simple shellfish extracts. Alcohol extraction gave good recovery of all toxin groups. The ease of ELISAs permits the ready expansion of the system to screen for other toxins, as new ELISAs become available.

Abstract:We questioned whether adults can be trained to discriminate the eye‐of‐origin of their perceptions and if this ability depends on the strength of the monocular channels during continuous flash suppression. Our results show that, even though voluntary attention did not alter the strength of the monocular channels, eye‐of‐origin discrimination performance improved. These results suggest a high‐level decisional mechanism informed by subtle sensory cues such as the differences in luminance or contrast in the two monocular channels is responsible for the eye‐of‐origin judgements. Helmholtz asked whether one could discriminate which eye is the origin of one's perception merely based on the retinal signals. Studies to date showed that participants' ability to tell the eye‐of‐origin most likely depends on contextual cues. Nevertheless, it has been shown that exogenous attention can enhance performance for monocularly presented stimuli. We questioned whether adults can be trained to discriminate the eye‐of‐origin of their perceptions and if this ability depends on the strength of the monocular channels. We used attentional feed‐forward training to improve the subject's eye‐of‐origin discrimination performance with voluntary attention. During training, participants received a binocular cue to inform them of the eye‐of‐origin of an upcoming target. Using continuous flash suppression, we also measured the signal strength of the monocular targets to see any possible modulations related to the cues. We collected confidence ratings from the participants about their eye‐of‐origin judgements to study in further detail whether metacognition has access to this information. Our results show that, even though voluntary attention did not alter the strength of the monocular channels, eye‐of‐origin discrimination performance improved following the training. A similar pattern was observed for confidence. The results from the feedforward attentional training and the increase in subjective confidence point towards a high‐level decisional mechanism being responsible for the eye‐of‐origin judgements. We propose that this high‐level process is informed by subtle sensory cues such as the differences in luminance or contrast in the two monocular channels.

Abstract:The central visual field is essential for activities like reading and face recognition. However, the impact of peripheral vision loss on daily activities is profound. While the importance of central vision is well established, the contribution of peripheral vision to spatial attention is less clear. In this study, we introduced a "mouse-eye" method as an alternative to traditional gaze-contingent eye tracking. We found that even in tasks requiring central vision, peripheral vision contributes to implicit attentional learning. Participants searched for a T among L s, with the T appearing more often in one visual quadrant. Earlier studies showed that participants' awareness of the T location probability was not essential for their ability to learn. When we limited the visible area around the mouse cursor, only participants aware of the target's location probability showed learning; those unaware did not. Adding placeholders in the periphery did not restore implicit attentional learning. A control experiment showed that when participants were allowed to see all items while searching and moving the mouse to reveal the target's color, both aware and unaware participants acquired location probability learning. Our results underscore the importance of peripheral vision in implicitly guided attention. Without peripheral vision, only explicit, but not implicit, attentional learning prevails.

Facilitation of Contrast Detection by Cross-Oriented Surround Stimuli and Its Psychophysical Mechanisms.

Abstract:Neurophysiological and psychophysical evidence indicates that neuronal surround modulation at cross-orientation (orthogonal to the preferred orientation of the classical receptive field) plays a key role in intermediate-level visual tasks, such as textural segregation and perceptual pop-out. What is missing is a psychophysical description of cross surround modulation at the spatial filter level in low-level vision. Moreover, neurophysiological evidence for how cross surround modulation is expressed at the neuronal level has been inconsistent. Here we report evidence for psychophysical facilitation of contrast detection by cross surround stimuli (orthogonal to the target orientation) that may provide insights into both the neurophysiology and psychophysics of cross surround modulation. We found that cross surround facilitation is a surround-contrast dependent effect mainly evident at low surround contrasts, and is narrowly tuned to spatial frequency and broadly tuned to orientation. To understand whether cross surround facilitation results from low-level processing of signal-to-noise enhancement or is due to uncertainty reduction at a higher-level decision stage, we (1) studied cross surround facilitation with an equivalent noise protocol, (2) estimated the changes in the slope of the psychometric function and the uncertainty parameter, M, and (3) measured cross surround effects at the dipper of the TvC function. The converging evidence suggests that cross surround facilitation of contrast detection is mainly a result of low-level signal-to-noise enhancement, and is little affected by uncertainty change.

Abstract:Microsaccades–tiny fixational eye movements– improve discriminability in high acuity tasks in the foveola. To investigate whether they help compensate for low discriminability at perifovea, we examined MS characteristics relative to the adult visual performance field, which is characterized by two perceptual asymmetries: Horizontal-Vertical Anisotropy (better discrimination along the horizontal than vertical meridian), and Vertical Meridian Asymmetry (better discrimination along the lower-than upper-vertical meridian). We investigated whether and to what extent microsaccade directionality varies when stimuli are at isoeccentric locations along the cardinals under conditions of heterogeneous discriminability (Experiment 1) and homogeneous discriminability, equated by adjusting stimulus contrast (Experiment 2). Participants performed a two-alternative forced-choice orientation discrimination task. In both experiments, performance was better on trials without microsaccades between ready signal onset and stimulus offset than on trials with microsaccades. Across the trial sequence the microsaccade rate and directional pattern were similar across locations. Our results indicate that microsaccades were similar regardless of stimulus discriminability and target location, except during the response period–once the stimuli were no longer present and target location no longer uncertain–when microsaccades were biased toward the target location. Thus, this study reveals that microsaccades do not flexibly adapt as a function of varying discriminability in a basic visual task around the visual field.

Abstract:Adaptation is the process by which we adjust internal models of the body, world, and mind in response to sensory feedback. While adaptation is studied extensively in the context of motor control, there is limited evidence that cognitive functions such as working memory are subject to the same error-driven adaptive control mechanism. To examine the possibility that internal spatial representations undergo adaptation, we had participants perform a task that interleaved a perceptual discrimination task and a spatial working memory task. Perceptual discrimination trials (85% of trials) presented an initial peripheral cue to exogenously capture attention, immediately followed by a displaced target stimulus. This sequence of events served to repeatedly induce a covert attentional allocation error. Interleaved spatial working memory trials (15% of trials) presented a stimulus at a pseudorandom peripheral location followed by a delay interval. On half of the working memory trials, the stimulus was surreptitiously presented at the same location as the initial attentional cue. We found that as attentional errors accumulated over the course of the experiment, participants' spatial recall shifted to counteract the attentional error. The magnitude of this shift was proportional to the number of induced errors. Recall performance rapidly recovered following the offset of error trials. Multiple control experiments ruled out alternative explanations for these results, such as oculomotor confounds and attentional biases unrelated to error. These findings indicate that the computational mechanisms governing the adaptation of motor commands appear to similarly serve to adjust and calibrate spatial cognition.
