Abstract:Using molecular-dynamics simulations we investigate thermal relaxation of C60 and C84 molecules suspended in octane liquid. Pristine fullerenes exhibit relatively slow relaxation due to weak thermal coupling with the liquid. A comparison of the interfacial transport characteristics obtained from relaxation simulations with those obtained from equilibrium simulations and fluctuation-dissipation theorem analysis demonstrates that the relaxation process involves two main steps: (i) energy flow from high- to low-frequency modes within the fullerene, and (ii) energy flow from low-frequency fullerene modes to the liquid. Functionalization of fullerenes with alkene chains leads to significant reduction of the thermal relaxation time. The relaxation time of functionalized fullerenes becomes independent from the functionalizing chain length beyond approximately 10 carbon segments; this can be understood in terms of thermal conductivity along the chain and heat transfer between the chain and the solvent.
Antecedents of burnout and turnover intentions during the COVID-19 pandemic in critical care nurses: A mediation study

Abstract:Background: Nurses working in critical care environments have experienced a great deal of psychological stress during the successive waves of the COVID-19 pandemic. Identifying factors which contribute to burnout and turnover intentions are important to retain intensive care unit (ICU) nurses. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify factors that are directly and indirectly associated with burnout and turnover intentions in ICU nurses. Methods: A cross-sectional design was used with survey data during the peak of the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were collected through an online survey and analyzed using mediation analysis. A total of 236 ICU nurses across Canada participated in the study. Results: The results indicate that burnout mediates the relationship between moral distress, organizational support, resilience, and turnover intentions. Moreover, 49% of the participants were considering leaving. The reasons were related to lack of administrative support, poor work environment and safety concerns. Discussion: Organizational support and individual resilience can both play a role in turnover intentions through the prevention of burnout symptoms. Managers at all levels play an important role in mitigating the harmful effects of the pandemic. Conclusion: The pandemic has had a serious psychological impact on ICU nurses. Targeted interventions are needed to support this group.

Factors contributing to nurse resignation during COVID-19: A qualitative descriptive study

Abstract:Aims: To explore and describe registered nurses' perceptions and experiences of work well-being extending from what inspired them to join the healthcare organization, what created a great day at work for them, through to what may have supported them to stay. Design: Qualitative descriptive study. Methods: Thirty-nine Australian nurses who resigned in 2021 from two metropolitan healthcare organizations in Victoria were interviewed in 2022, each for 30-60 min. The semi-structured interview transcripts were transcribed verbatim and analysed inductively and thematically. Results: Four themes were constructed for each of the key research questions. Inspiration to join the organizations transpired through organizational reputation, recruitment experiences, right position and right time, fit and feel. A great day at work was created through relationships with colleagues, experiences with managers, adequate resourcing and delivering quality care. Factors contributing to nurses resigning included COVID-19, uncertainty of role, workload and rostering, and finally, not feeling supported, respected and valued. Factors that may have supported the nurses to stay included flexible work patterns and opportunities, improved workplace relationships, workload management and support, and supportive systems and environments. Cutting across these themes were five threads: (1) relationships, (2) communication, (3) a desire to learn and develop, (4) work-life balance and (5) providing quality patient care. Conclusions: Novel ways of working and supporting individuals, teams and organizations are needed to maintain and sustain nurses. The nurses' inspiration, what created a great day at work, and support needed to stay highlighted the importance of workplace initiatives to build nursing career pathways, provide equitable opportunities for professional development, workload and roster flexibility and implement professional relationship-enhancing actions to foster authentic civility. Impact: This study contributes an in-depth exploration of the perceptions and experiences of nurses who resigned from two healthcare organizations and provides a description of (1) what inspired these nurses to initially join the organization, (2) what they perceived created a great day at work for them, (3) the factors contributing to their resignation and (4) what may have supported them to stay. The reasons nurses resign from an organization were identified as complex and multi-factorial, with opportunities for promoting nursing career pathways, addressing equity in opportunities and implementing professional relationship-enhancing actions. These contributions add both context and opportunity to strengthen organizational initiatives to attract, sustain and retain nurses.

Abstract:Objectives. To identify potential drivers of health care worker attrition. Methods. We conducted a survey of 1083 nonphysician health care workers in a large urban health system in New York City from September to October 2022. Results. The results of a multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that higher odds of intending to leave health care were significantly associated with male gender, registered nurse profession, burnout, self-perceived mental health service need, and verbal abuse from patients or visitors, whereas lower odds were seen among those reporting greater emotional well-being and a better workplace culture. A relative importance analysis indicated that burnout was the strongest correlate of intention to leave (22.5% relative variance explained [RVE]), followed by subjective emotional well-being (16.7% RVE), being a registered nurse (12.3% RVE), poorer perceived workplace culture (9.5% RVE), and male gender (5.9% RVE). Conclusions. Overall, our findings suggest the need for well-coordinated interventions that address both individual- and system-level factors in an effort to improve retention. Public Health Implications. Our results indicate a need for interventions targeting workplace culture, staff burnout, and mental health service provision. Abstract:AimTo examine, through the lens of the Job Demands-Resources model, the influence of caring for COVID-19 patients on nurse's perception of chronic fatigue, quality of care, satisfaction at work and intention to leave their organization and the profession. BackgroundStudies have examined how fear of COVID-19 contributes to the mental, physical and work adjustment among nurses. To date, few studies have been conducted examining how caring for patients with COVID-19 contributes to work outcomes among nurses. MethodsThis is a cross-sectional survey involving 1705 frontline nurses and licensed practical nurses in Quebec, Canada. From these, 782 reported caring for COVID-19 patients. ResultsHigh chronic fatigue, poor quality of care, lower work satisfaction, and higher intention to leave their organization were found for nurses caring for COVID-19 patients. Poorly prepared and overwhelmed nurses showed higher turnover intention than those well prepared and in control. ConclusionsThere is an urgent need to provide support to nurses during the pandemic, with a long-term strategy to increase their retention. Implications for nursing managementNurse administrators play an important role in supporting their nurses during a pandemic in the form of education, training and policy development to positively impact quality of care and retention.

Abstract:Healthcare worker burnout is a growing problem in the United States which affects healthcare workers themselves, as well as the healthcare system as a whole. The goal of this qualitative assessment was to understand factors that may lead to healthcare worker burnout and turnover through focus groups with Certified Nursing Assistants who worked in acute care hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic. Eight focus group discussions lasting approximately 30 minutes each were held remotely from October 2022–January 2023 with current and former Certified Nursing Assistants who worked during the COVID-19 pandemic in acute care hospitals. Participants were recruited through various sources such as social media and outreach through professional organizations. The focus groups utilized open-ended prompts including topics such as challenges experienced during the pandemic, what could have improved their experiences working during the pandemic, and motivations for continuing or leaving their career in healthcare. The focus groups were coded using an immersion-crystallization technique and summarized using NVivo and Microsoft Excel. Participant demographic information was summarized overall and by current work status. The focus groups included 58 Certified Nursing Assistants; 33 (57%) were current Certified Nursing Assistants and 25 (43%) were Certified Nursing Assistants who no longer work in healthcare. Throughout the focus groups, five convergent themes emerged, including staffing challenges, respect and recognition for Certified Nursing Assistants, the physical and mental toll of the job, facility leadership support, and pay and incentives. Focus group discussions with Certified Nursing Assistants identified factors at individual and organizational levels that might contribute to burnout and staff turnover in healthcare settings. Suggestions from participants on improving their experiences included ensuring staff know they are valued, being included in conversations with leadership, and improving access to mental health resources.

Abstract:Background The COVID‐19 pandemic stretched Swedish intensive care unit (ICU) resources to an extent never experienced before, but even before the pandemic staffing was difficult and the number of staffed ICU beds was low. Studies have revealed high levels of COVID‐19 ICU staff burn‐out and fatigue, and as similar situations with high demands are likely to occur in the future a better understanding of resources that improve staff resilience is important. Using the job‐demand resource theory as a framework, we explored ICU professionals' views on demands and resources when working in COVID‐19 ICUs with the aim to highlight factors that increased the job resources. Methods Data were collected via a web survey distributed to COVID‐19 ICU professionals, including both regular and temporary roles, working in 13 COVID‐19 ICU wards in Stockholm and Sörmland counties during the spring 2021. A total of 251 written responses to the question "What would have made work in the COVID‐19 ICU less demanding?" were analyzed using thematic analysis. One year later a member‐checking focus group interview was conducted to validate and further explore staff experiences. Results The main themes were work strategy, fairness and support, continuity, accessible leadership, introduction/information, and crisis preparedness. The analysis of the focus group conducted confirmed the main results and the extreme demands on ICU staff during the initial stages of the pandemic. Conclusion To increase staff health and performance in a long‐term crisis our results suggest; maintaining workplace leadership, scheduling work in advance and, when possible, schedule for recovery.

Determinants of intention to leave among nurses and physicians in a hospital setting during the COVID-19 pandemic: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:The global outbreak of COVID-19 has brought to light the profound impact that large-scale disease outbreaks can have on healthcare systems and the dedicated professionals who serve within them. It becomes increasingly important to explore strategies for retaining nurses and physicians within hospital settings during such challenging times. This paper aims to investigate the determinants of retention among nurses and physicians during the COVID-19 pandemic. A systematic review of other potential determinants impacting retention rates during the pandemic was carried out. Secondly, a meta-analysis on the prevalence of intention to leave for nurses and physicians during the COVID-19 pandemic. A comprehensive search was performed within four electronic databases on March 17 2023. Fifty-five papers were included in the systematic review, whereas thirty-three papers fulfilled the eligibility criteria for the meta-analysis. The systematic review resulted in six themes of determinants impacting intention to leave: personal characteristics, job demands, employment services, working conditions, work relationships, and organisational culture. The main determinants impacting the intention to leave are the fear of COVID-19, age, experience, burnout symptoms and support. Meta-analysis showed a prevalence of intent to leave the current job of 38% for nurses (95% CI: 26%-51%) and 29% for physicians (95% CI: 21%-39%), whereas intention to leave the profession for nurses 28% (95% CI: 21%-34%) and 24% for physicians (95% CI: 23%-25%). The findings of this paper showed the critical need for hospital managers to address the concerning increase in nurses' and physicians' intentions to leave during the COVID-19 pandemic. This intention to leave is affected by a complex conjunction of multiple determinants, including the fear of COVID-19 and the confidence in and availability of personal protective equipment. Moreover, individual factors like age, experience, burnout symptoms, and support are maintained in this review. Understanding the influence of determinants on retention during the COVID-19 pandemic offers an opportunity to formulate prospective strategies for retaining nurses and physicians within hospital settings.

Abstract:Background/Objectives: Home and community care (HCC) nurses experienced increased occupational challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, including increased workloads, job stressors, and occupational risks, like virus exposure. The objective of this study was to elucidate what factors influenced nurses' decisions to stay in their role, take a temporary leave, or exit HCC during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A secondary analysis of data collected using a cross-sectional online open survey distributed among HCC Registered Practical Nurses across Ontario between June and September 2022 was conducted. The factors contributing to nurses' decision to remain in HCC, temporarily leave, or exit the sector were evaluated using multinomial logistic regression (p < 0.05). Results: Of the 664 participants, 54% (n = 357) stayed in the HCC sector, 30% (n = 199) temporarily left, and 16% (n = 108) exited the sector. Nurses with greater years of experience working in HCC and those who avoided infection were more likely to stay in their role in HCC, which may reflect strong relationships with long-term clients, opportunity and accumulated experience to increase income, and maintenance of good health. Nurses with higher levels of emotional intelligence were more likely to take leaves and exit HCC, suggesting that stepping away may have been a strategy to safeguard themselves. Conclusions: HCC leadership should prioritize the development of solutions to support nurses in the HCC workforce, including those with fewer years of experience. This may promote nurses' participation in the sector, particularly during times of heightened occupational challenges and crises, like COVID-19.

Abstract:Background: The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic presented unprecedented challenges to healthcare systems worldwide, with intensive care unit (ICU) nurses at the forefront of patient care. To date, there is limited evidence into ICU nurses'experiences of the pandemic in Kuwait. Research question/aims/objectives: To elucidate the challenges faced by ICU nurses in Kuwait during the pandemic, by considering two research questions: "What contributed to intensified pressure for the ICU nurses?" and "How were the nurses affected?". Research design: This was a qualitative study which utilised semi-structured interviews. Interviews were conducted between January 2021 and June 2022 with ICU nurses who worked during the COVID-19 pandemic. The data were analysed using Charmaz's grounded theory methodology. Participants and research context: 25 nurses from three ICUs in Kuwait. Ethical considerations: The study was approved by the University Ethics Committee and by the Ministry of Health in Kuwait. Findings/results: The analysis identified two themes (the factors contributing to intensified pressure in the ICU, and the impact on the nurses) and seven sub-themes. The pressure in the ICU intensified due to the rise in the number of patients, staff shortages, and the requirement to adhere to unrealistic new procedures for infection control. Restricted and cancelled leave, as well as impaired autonomy at work, impeded the nurses' ability to recover from stress. The heightened stress also contributed to a worsening in interpersonal relationships between the nurses and their colleagues. The nurses' care was compromised by these challenges, leading to moral distress and a range of mental health symptoms (e.g., stress, anxiety, emotional exhaustion). Conclusions: The study accords with other research conducted during the pandemic in revealing a significant mental health toll among healthcare workers during the pandemic. The stressors were similar to those which have been reported in other studies, although there were also context-specific effects relating to the environment of the ICU and the Kuwaiti context.

Abstract:Background: Intensive care unit (ICU) nurses are highly prone to occupational stress and burnout, affecting their physical and mental health. The occurrence of the pandemic and related events increased nurses' workload and further exacerbated their stress and burnout. This work investigates occupational stress and burnout experienced by ICU nurses working with COVID and non-COVID patients. Method: A prospective longitudinal mixed-methods study was conducted with a cohort of ICU nurses working in medical ICU (COVID unit; n = 14) and cardiovascular ICU (non-COVID unit; n = 5). Each participant was followed for six 12-h shifts. Data on occupational stress and burnout prevalence were collected using validated questionnaires. Physiological indices of stress were collected using wrist-worn wearable technologies. Participants elaborated on the causes of stress experienced each shift by completing open-ended questions. Data were analyzed using statistical and qualitative methods. Results: Participants caring for COVID patients at the COVID unit were 3.71 times more likely to experience stress ( p < 0.001) in comparison to non-COVID unit participants. No differences in stress levels were found when the same participants worked with COVID and non-COVID patients at different shifts ( p = 0.58) at the COVID unit. The cohorts expressed similar contributors to stress, based in communication tasks, patient acuity, clinical procedures, admission processes, proning, labs, and assisting coworkers. Conclusion: Nurses in COVID units, irrespective of whether they care for a COVID patient, experience occupational stress and burnout.

Understanding the mental health and intention to leave of the public health workforce in Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic: A cross-sectional study

Abstract:Background: There is limited evidence about the mental health and intention to leave of the public health workforce in Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic. The objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of burnout, symptoms of anxiety and depression, and intention to leave among the Canadian public health workforce, and associations with individual and workplace factors. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using data collected by a Canada-wide survey from November 2022 to January 2023, where participants reported sociodemographic and workplace factors. Mental health outcomes were measured using validated tools including the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory, the 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale, and the 2-item Patient Health Questionnaire to measure symptoms of depression. Participants were asked to report if they intended to leave their position in public health. Logistic regression was used to estimate adjusted odds ratios (aOR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) for the associations between explanatory variables such as sociodemographic, workplace factors, and outcomes of mental health, and intention to leave public health. Results: Among the 671 participants, the prevalence of burnout, and symptoms of depression and anxiety in the two weeks prior were 64%, 26%, and 22% respectively. 33% of participants reported they were intending to leave their public health position in the coming year. Across all outcomes, sociodemographic factors were largely not associated with mental health and intention to leave. However, an exception to this was that those with 16-20 years of work experience had higher odds of burnout (aOR = 2.16; 95% CI = 1.12-4.18) compared to those with ≤ 5 years of work experience. Many workplace factors were associated with mental health outcomes and intention to leave public health. Those who felt bullied, threatened, or harassed because of work had increased odds of depressive symptoms (aOR = 1.85; 95% CI = 1.28-2.68), burnout (aOR = 1.61; 95% CI = 1.16-2.23), and intention to leave (aOR = 1.64; 95% CI = 1.13-2.37). Conclusions: During the COVID-19 pandemic, some of the public health workforce experienced negative impacts on their mental health. 33% of the sample indicated an intention to leave their role, which has the potential to exacerbate pre-existing challenges in workforce retention. Study findings create an impetus for policy and practice changes to mitigate risks to mental health and attrition to create safe and healthy working environments for public health workers during public health crises.
Health care providers' perceptions of burnout and moral distress during the COVID-19 pandemic: A qualitative study from Saskatchewan, Canada

Abstract:Journal of Health Services Research &Policy, Ahead of Print. ObjectivesThis study sought to describe feelings and perceptions of burnout and moral distress experienced by health care providers in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan during the COVID-19 pandemic.MethodsThis study was part of a larger mixed methods project, and we here report on the qualitative results relating to burnout and moral distress experienced by medical doctors, registered nurses and respiratory therapists. We used an exploratory, qualitative descriptive design involving one-one-one interviews with 24 health care providers. Interview data were analysed using a reflexive thematic analysis approach.ResultsWe identified three overarching themes each for health care provider burnout and moral distress. Interviews revealed that providers experienced burnout through (i) increased expectations and (ii) unfavourable work environments, which led most of them to recognise (iii) a need to step back. Regarding moral distress, key themes were: (i) a sense of compromised care, (ii) feelings of bumping heads with authorities and patient families, and (iii) seeing patients make difficult decisions.ConclusionOur study found that medical doctors, registered nurses and respiratory therapists working during the COVID-19 pandemic experienced and continue to experience significant burnout and moral distress. This was often driven by both institution- and system-level factors. There is a need for sustained investment to build and support a motivated health care workforce to prepare for future pandemics and health emergencies.

Abstract:Background and objective: The coronavirus outbreak in 2019 has created unprecedented pressure on health care staff and material resources such as PPEs, Ventilators, Oxygen supplies, hospital beds etc. Ensuring an adequate supply of nurses to maintain a high standard of care and safe infective care practices in the phase of the increased patient load is a huge challenge for all stakeholders. Utilizing non-ICU nurses for ICU care is an option. However, factors that influence the optimal selection and coping behaviour (resilience) of a non-ICU nurse are not well examined. In this paper, we “adopt a mixed method design” to determine the suitable specialty staff for ICU attachment during a pandemic. I will emphasise the significance of educational training and preparation of critical care on non-ICU nursing staff in relation to their adaption and coping level throughout this study. The objectives of this study were (1) to explore experiences, perceptions and factors influencing resilience of non-ICU nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic and (2) to review the lived experience of non-ICU nurses after the critical care competency training programme.Methods: After obtaining the comments from the Dissertation Review Board, the study adopted a mixed method study design. The authors selected 76 samples (eight males and sixty-eight females) by “non-probability convenient sampling”. The authors used a survey for data collection lasting 8 weeks. The authors used descriptive (frequency, percentage distribution, mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics to analyse the data collected.Results: The study revealed that most of the staff (75%) met the prepared objectives of the orientation program. Approximately 90% of the staff agreed that they are able to take care of critically ill patients with minimal supervision. Further, 29% of the staff stated that psychological preparation & staff readiness are the first priorities to be considered before ICU attachment. We also evaluated the ability of the staff to bear the ICU workload, and 51% of the staff reported it being bearable. This number is similar to the number of staff who reported suitable health status to physical exertion needs of the ICU. Staff age, marital status, gender, qualification, area of experience, and years of experience did not influence staff coping mechanisms. However, the attachment staff with previous ICU exposure have effective coping mechanisms during their attachment in ICU.Conclusions: In shortage of ICU staff in case of a pandemic, staff with neurology and neurosurgery background showed a higher confidence and coping level to ICU stressful environment. Furthermore, staff with other clinical backgrounds can work effectively during this circumstance with organized training, preparedness plan, effective clinical follow up and psychological support. All these factors facilitate the coping mechanism.
Managing during the COVID-19 pandemic: A cross-sectional study of health care workers' perceived organizational support and its consequences on their compassion, resilience and turnover intention

Abstract:Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate health care professionals' perceived organizational support and its effect on their compassion, resilience and turnover intention in the United Arab Emirates. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic exerted unprecedented pressure on health care systems, professionals and management systems. Health care organizations begin to explore their roles and function in relation to risks and resilience, in addition to ascertain what level of organization support they are providing to their workers. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with a questionnaire administered to 538 health care workers, to examine their personal resources and organizational support during the pandemic. Results: A total of 37.7% of nurses were found to have a moderate level of resilience, logistic regression showed that being married is a protective factor against resigning from the profession (OR = 0.462, P = .012, 95% CI: 0.254-0.842), and health care workers who perceived higher organizational support were approximately 50% less likely to have a turnover intention (OR = 0.506, P = .009, 95% CI: 0.303-0.845). Multiple linear regression model indicated significantly higher resilience among physicians (β = 0.12, P < .05) and allied health care practitioners (β = 0.12, P = .022). Organizational support had a significant positive relationship with resilience scores (β = 0.20, P < .001); adequate training was significantly related to higher compassion levels (β = 0.11, P < .05) and high organizational support scores were associated with increased compassion scores (β = 0.27, P < .001). Conclusions: Front-line health care workers reported moderate organizational support during the pandemic, commensurately reflected in moderate levels of personal resilience and self-compassion. Continued and better support is vital for employee sustainability and the increased health system performance, including quality of care and patient outcomes. Implications for nursing management: Nurse managers should help health care workers improve self-care strategies by strengthening personal resources, including shortened duty hours, offering adequate break time, providing a safe work climate and purveying adequate personal protective equipment and supplies to combat infections. They should build an empathetic work environment through understanding the needs of staff, helping tackle their work stress and sustaining cultures of compassion through promoting rewarding and flexibility strategies. Moreover, policymakers and nurse mangers should create a rewarding culture for nurses and other health care workers to increase their commitment to their jobs.

Abstract:During the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare workers (HCW) were categorized as "essential" and "non-essential", creating a division where some were "locked-in" a system with little ability to prepare for or control the oncoming crisis. Others were "locked-out" regardless of whether their skills might be useful. The purpose of this study was to systematically gather data over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic from HCW through an interprofessional lens to examine experiences of locked-out HCW. This convergent parallel mixed-methods study captured perspectives representing nearly two dozen professions through a survey, administered via social media, and video blogs. Analysis included logistic regression models of differences in outcome measures by professional category and Rapid Identification of Themes from Audio recordings (RITA) of video blogs. We collected 1299 baseline responses from 15 April 2020 to 16 March 2021. Of those responses, 12.1% reported no signs of burnout, while 21.9% reported four or more signs. Qualitative analysis identified four themes: (1) professional identity, (2) intrinsic stressors, (3) extrinsic factors, and (4) coping strategies. There are some differences in the experiences of locked-in and locked-out HCW. This did not always lead to differing reports of moral distress and burnout, and both groups struggled to cope with the realities of the pandemic.
Intensive Care Unit Nurses’ Lived Experiences of Psychological Stress and Trauma Caring for COVID-19 Patients

Abstract:Background: Intensive care unit (ICU) nurses are enduring unprecedented burden caring for COVID-19 patients. Few studies have reported types of work-related events that lead to occupational stress and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Methods: ICU nurses were recruited at an academic health science center to explore their experiences of caring for COVID-19 patients. Participants were interviewed for 1 hour using open-ended questions. Symptoms of PTSD were assessed using the PTSD Checklist, job satisfaction with a Likert-type scale, and intention to leave their job with a “yes or no” question. Semi-structured interviews were transcribed and analyzed using NVivo software; quantitative data were analyzed using frequencies and means with R 4.0.5. Findings: The ICU nurse sample comprised nine females and one male, all Caucasian, with a mean age of 26.6 years. Analysis of interview transcripts revealed six recurring themes: Change in Practice, Emotion, Patient’s Family, Isolation, Job Satisfaction, and Public Reaction. Quantitative findings revealed 7 of 10 met diagnostic criteria for PTSD. Most participants (7/10) were “somewhat satisfied” with their job. Five of 10 considered leaving their job in the last 6 months. Conclusion/Implications for Practice: Understanding the impact stressful pandemic-related patient care has on ICU nurses provides evidence that new policies are needed. Furthermore, qualitative findings provide insight into the best design and deployment of interventions to reduce stress and prevent development of PTSD. More research is needed to understand long-term effects of PTSD and to evaluate strategies to prevent PTSD during stressful emergency surges in intensive care.
