Abstract:Developing highly efficient and durable alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts composed of earth-abundant materials is crucial for large-scale electrochemical hydrogen production. Herein, interfacial chemistry engineering is employed to decouple the restriction of both water discharge and hydrogen adsorption free energy. And low valence state Niδ+ (δ < 1) is proposed as an efficient water-dissociation promoter based on our dual-descriptor method. Moreover, metallic and intrinsic HER-active Ni is introduced and a highly conductive edge-enriched Ni0.2Mo0.8N/Ni hybrid electrocatalyst is constructed. DFT calculations and microkinetics analysis demonstrate that the Ni site and Ni0.2Mo0.8N site have favorable hydroxyl and hydrogen species adsorption energetics, respectively, which can cooperate synergistically towards alkaline hydrogen evolution. The resulting electrocatalyst shows excellent HER electrocatalytic performance with an overpotential of about 70 mV at 300 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of 33 mV dec−1. It also offers outstanding operational stability at large current densities up to 200 mA cm−2. Further theoretical calculations suggest a tip-enhanced-like local electric field around the topmost Ni nanoparticles, leading to increased K-ion concentration in the inner Helmholtz plane. The HER kinetics and surface reactant density can be simultaneously improved by this hierarchical Ni0.2Mo0.8N/Ni electrocatalyst. This study might open up new avenues of reasonable design of hierarchical structures for superior electrocatalysts.

Abstract:As one of the dominant configurations, platinum (Pt) single atomic catalysts (SACs) have pushed the performance of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) to an unprecedented level due to the maximized atomic utilization efficiency of Pt atoms. However, the contribution of atomic clusters, which exist in SACs as well, to the overall catalytic performance is always overlooked, thus limiting further enhancement of the performance of Pt-catalyzed HER. Herein, we report anchoring Pt atomic clusters on N-doped graphene for ultrahigh performance of the HER Benefiting from optimized electron transfer and larger binding energy between active centers and the substrate, Pt atomic cluster catalysts (ACCs) exhibit higher catalytic activity than their single atomic counterparts after 4000 cycles and more than 16 h for HER in an acid solution. These findings reveal a vast opportunity to enhance the catalytic performance of chemical reactions with noble-metal-based ACCs in the near future.
Mechanistic Insight into the Synergy between Platinum Single Atom and Cluster Dual Active Sites Boosting Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:In the energy transition context, the design and synthesis of high‐performance Pt‐based photocatalysts with low Pt content and ultrahigh atom‐utilization efficiency for hydrogen production are essential. Herein, w e report a facile approach for decorating atomically dispersed Pt cocatalysts having single‐atom (SA) and atomic cluster dual active sites on CdS nanorods (PtSA+C/CdS) via atomic layer deposition. The size of the cocatalyst and the spatial intimacy of the cocatalyst active sites are precisely engineered at the atomic scale. The PtSA+C/CdS photocatalysts show the optimized photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity, achieving a reaction rate of 80.4 mmol h−1 g−1, which is 1.6‐ and 7.3‐fold higher than those of the PtSA/CdS and PtNP/CdS photocatalysts, respectively. Thorough characterization and theoretical calculations reveal that the enhanced photocatalytic activity is due to a remarkable synergy between SAs and atomic clusters as dual active sites, which are responsible for water adsorption–dissociation and hydrogen desorption, respectively. A similar synergetic effect is found in a representative Pt/TiO2 system, indicating the generality of o ur strategy. This study demonstrates the significance of the synergy between active sites for enhancing the reaction efficiency, opening a new avenue for the rational design of atomically dispersed photocatalysts with high efficiency. Abstract:Maximizing atomic utilization of precious metal-based catalysts is of great significance in heterogeneous catalysis, also becoming a useful strategy to develop efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Although the dispersion of platinum (Pt) as single atoms (SAs) has increasingly been used in the design of HER electrocatalysts, it is still controversial if the SAs possess higher reactivity relative to the nanoparticles with identical atom loading. Here, by virtue of computational studies, we find that atomic step-rich Pt clusters and defective graphene (DG)-loaded Pt SAs are beneficial to water dissociation and hydrogen coupling, respectively, predicting that decent activity and high atomic utilization for alkaline HER electrocatalysis will be exhibited on the structure that integrates both Pt SAs and nanoclusters onto the DG matrix (PtSA/NC-DG). We experimentally synthesize the PtSA/NC-DG catalyst for alkaline HER. The optimized PtSA/NC-DG delivers an overpotential of 41 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) and mass activity of 5.4 mA mu g(pt)(-1) at the overpotential of 100 mV. The mass activity is nearly 6 and 10 times higher than that of its Pt SA counterpart and commercial PVC catalyst. This work deepens the knowledge of the synergistic effect of single atoms and nanoclusters for alkaline HER electrocatalysis. [GRAPHICS] .

Abstract:Hydrogen is identified as one of the most promising sustainable and clean energy sources. The development of a hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst with high activity is essential to meet future needs. Considering the novel advantages of two-dimensional materials and the high catalytic activity of atomic transition metals, in this study, using density functional theory calculations, the HER on a single transition metal (10 different TM atoms) adsorbed and doped ZnO monolayer (ZnO-m) has been investigated. The Volmer-Tafel reaction mechanisms and strain engineering of the three best HER catalysts are also discussed. The results show that Pt@ZnO-m, Co-doped ZnO-m and Ir-doped ZnO-m with high stability all have a smaller absolute H adsorption free energy than Pt, and the optimal value of Pt@ZnO-m is -0.017 eV. The calculation of the reaction energy barriers shows that the Volmer-Tafel step is favorable. Co@ZnO-m and Ir@ZnO-m have high HER activity, the widest pH range, and acid-alkali resistance. Pt@ZnO-m and Co-doped ZnO-m maintain excellent HER performances in the strain range of -4% to 4%.

Abstract:Efficient transition metal oxide electrocatalysts for the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) have received intensive attention to energy conversion but are limited by their sluggish water dissociation and unfavorable hydrogen migration and coupling. Herein, systematic density functional theory (DFT) predicts that on representative NiO, the hydroxylation (OH–) and heterointerface coupled with metallic Cu can respectively reduce the energy barrier of water dissociation and facilitate hydrogen spillover. Motivated by theoretical predictions, we subtly designed a delicate strategy to realize the electrochemical OH– modification in KOH with moderate concentration (HOM-NiO) and to channel rapid hydrogen spillover at the heterointerface of HOM-NiO and Cu, ensuring an enhanced HER kinetic. This HOM-NiO/Cu is systematically investigated by in situ XAS and electrochemical simulations, verifying its extraordinary merits for HER including the enhanced water dissociation, alleviated oxophilicity that is advantageous for consecutive adsorptions of water, and accelerated hydrogen spillover, thereby exhibiting superb HER activity with 33 and 310 mV overpotentials at the current densities of 10 and 1000 mA cm–2 in 1.0 M KOH, outperforming the Pt/C. Abstract:Hydrogen is a kind of sustainable clean energy. Sunlight-driven hydrogen evolution reaction(HER) from water splitting assisted by photocatalysts is very crucial for developing clean energy technologies. Single-atom catalysts, such as atomically dispersed Pt on anatase(Pt1/TiO2) have exhibited excellent photocatalytic HER performance. However, the role of a single atom is still elusive. The mechanism of photocatalytic HER of TiO2-supported noble metal single-atom catalysts has been studied. The supported single-atom Pt could narrow the bandgap of TiO2, enhance the optical absorption properties, and promote the transfer of the excited electrons. Excited electrons do not participate in the process of O-H cleavage, but can participate in the process of proton reduction and greatly reduce the hydrogen evolution energy barrier. Therefore, the hydrogen evolution energy can be used as a descriptor to evaluate the activity of TiO2-supported single-atom catalysts. The activity of hydrogen evolution is found to be related to the number of d-band electrons of the single noble atom on M1/TiO2(M=Pd, Pt, Rh, Ir). The increase of the number of d electrons in the single atom could reduce the hydrogen evolution energy and promote the hydrogen evolution process.

Abstract:Optimizing the electronic structure of an electrocatalyst has been supposed to a valid approach to facilitate the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity. Herein, a core–shell architecture comprising a Pt nanoparticle (NP) encapsulated into single-atomic Co species anchored on nickel iron double layered hydroxide substrate (PtCo–NiFe LDH) was established. The PtCo–NiFe LDH catalyst displays the remarkable electrocatalytic HER performance (29 mV@10 mA cm −2 ), better than the NiFe LDH (183 mV@10 mA cm −2 ) and commercial Pt/C (30 mV@10 mA cm −2 ). In addition, it also possesses excellent stability for up to 25 h, and the morphology and structure have hardly undergone any significant changes. It is supposed that the efficient electronic relation between Pt NP and atomically-distributed Co site on NiFe LDH could give rise to plentiful active sites and enhanced conductivity, and thus raise excellent catalytic properties. This work would improve the design and construction of efficient electrocatalysts for a sustainable green energy system.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted much attention due to their outstanding catalytic activity and maximum atom utilization. However, the unclear structure of the atomic active site hinders deep understanding and wide applications of SACs. Herein, we select a series of single-atom platinum (Pt)-containing polyoxometalates with well-defined structures as molecular models to clarify the effects of metal–oxide support and coordination environment on the activity of single-atom Pt electrocatalyst for HER. In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy and density function theory calculation reveal that metal–oxide supports affect the ability of atomic Pt site to obtain electrons, resulting in different effective potentials loaded on the Pt active center in HER. Meanwhile, the coordination environment of single-atom Pt determines the pathway of HER, which also leads to different HER performance. This work provides a feasible strategy to reveal the structure–activity relationship of SACs and design new high-efficiency SACs for electrocatalytic HER.

Platinum Atomic Clusters Embedded in Defects of Anatase/Graphene for Efficient Electro- and Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:Electro- and photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (e-HER and p-HER) are two promising strategies to produce green hydrogen fuel from water. High intrinsic activity, sufficient active sites, fast charge-transfer capacity, and good optoelectronic properties must be taken into consideration simultaneously in pursuit of an ideal bifunctional catalyst. Here, platinum atomic clusters embedded in defects of TiO2 nanocrystals/graphene nanosheets (Pt–T/G) are reported as a bifunctional catalyst for electro- and photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (e-HER and p-HER). High activity is delivered due to the charge transfer from the other part of the catalyst to the active center (Pt2–O4–Tix), decreasing the activation energy of the rate-limiting step, which is revealed by synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy, photoelectrochemical measurements, and simulated calculations. In regard to e-HER, it outperforms the commercial 20 wt % Pt/C catalyst by a factor of 17.5 on Pt mass basis, allowing for a 93% reduction in Pt loadings. Abstract:AbstractIt is highly desirable but challenging to optimize the structure of photocatalysts at the atomic scale to facilitate the separation of electron–hole pairs for enhanced performance. Now, a highly efficient photocatalyst is formed by assembling single Pt atoms on a defective TiO2 support (Pt1/def‐TiO2). Apart from being proton reduction sites, single Pt atoms promote the neighboring TiO2 units to generate surface oxygen vacancies and form a Pt‐O‐Ti3+ atomic interface. Experimental results and density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the Pt‐O‐Ti3+ atomic interface effectively facilitates photogenerated electrons to transfer from Ti3+ defective sites to single Pt atoms, thereby enhancing the separation of electron–hole pairs. This unique structure makes Pt1/def‐TiO2 exhibit a record‐level photocatalytic hydrogen production performance with an unexpectedly high turnover frequency of 51423 h−1, exceeding the Pt nanoparticle supported TiO2 catalyst by a factor of 591.
Au(111)@Ti6O11 Heterostructure Composites with Enhanced Synergistic Effects As Efficient Electrocatalysts for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction.

Abstract:Developing cost-effective electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is of great significance for the renewable energy field. The Magnéli phase TinO2n-1 (4 ≤ n ≤ 10) has attracted much attention as a promising carbon-free support for electrocatalysts due to its high electrical conductivity and favorable electrochemical stability. Herein, we report the synthesis of a specific crystal-plane coupling heterostructure between Au(111) nanoparticles (NPs) and Ti6O11 by photoreduction. Benefitting from the modification of the electronic structure and synergistic effects of the heterostructure, the electron density around Au atoms is enhanced, and the Gibbs free energy of hydrogen absorption (ΔGH*) was dramatically optimized to facilitate the HER process. The best electrocatalyst Au(111)@Ti6O11-50 exhibits a lower overpotential of 49 mV at a current density of -10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 39 mV dec-1 in 0.5 M H2SO4, and shows long-term electrochemical stability over 30 h. Au(111)@Ti6O11-50 shows a mass activity of 9.25 A mgAu-1, which is about 18 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C (0.51 A mgPt-1). Meanwhile, the density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that the ΔGH* of Au(111)@Ti6O11 is -0.098 eV, which is comparable to that of Pt (-0.09 eV). This work would be a powerful guide for the realization of efficient utilization of noble metals in catalysis.
Electrochemical Conversion of Bulk Platinum into Platinum Single-Atom Sites for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Herein, we report a convenient and controllable electroplating strategy to fabricate single-atom site catalysts directly from bulk metals with the assistance of graphene oxide membrane (GOM) under mild and ambient conditions. With the regulation of the GOM, the diffusion rate and the concentration of metal ions around the working electrode are efficiently decreased; consequently, the growth of nuclei and aggregation of atoms are successfully prevented. The synthesized Pt-SAs/C not only exhibits an outstanding electrocatalytic activity towards the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), but also an excellent photocatalytic activity for water splitting with CdS as the photosensitizer under visible-light irradiation. This work provides an efficient strategy for developing single-atom site catalysts towards hydrogen production.
Synergistic material modification-induced optimization of interfacial charge transfer and surface hydrogen adsorption

Abstract:Being chemically stable, low cost and made from abundant resources, titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) possesses the most desired advantages for photocatalytic applications. However, the intrinsic limits of high surface hydrogen adsorption energy, wide band gap, low separation rate and rapid recombination of the photogenerated charge carriers greatly hamper its utilization. To address these issues, the present work combines density functional theory (DFT) calculations with rational modifications of TiO 2 with nickel doping and an ultra-thin shield of fluorinated carbon (FNT) for application in the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Comprehensive studies imply that the synergistic modifications not only optimize the surface H adsorption, but also facilitate the interfacial charge transfer and simultaneously prevent the photochemical and chemical corrosion of the catalysts. In good agreement with the theoretical predictions, the resulting FNT photocatalysts demonstrate an optimal HER efficiency of 13.0 mmol g −1 h −1 , nearly 33-times and over three-times beyond that of the pristine TiO 2 (0.4 mmol g −1 h −1 ) and the Ni-doped TiO 2 (4.2 mmol g −1 h −1 ), respectively. Abstract:Endowing conventional materials with specific functions that are hardly available is invariably of significant importance but greatly challenging. TiO2 is proven to be highly active for the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution while intrinsically inert for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to its poor electrical conductivity and unfavorable hydrogen adsorption/desorption behavior. Herein, the first activation of inert TiO2 for electrocatalytic HER is demonstrated by synergistically modulating the positions of d-band center and triggering hydrogen spillover through the dual doping-induced partial phase transition. The N, F co-doping-induced partial phase transition from anatase to rutile phase in TiO2 (AR-TiO2|(N,F)) exhibits extraordinary HER performance with overpotentials of 74, 80, and 142 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in 1.0 M KOH, 0.5 M H2SO4, and 1.0 M phosphate-buffered saline electrolytes, respectively, which are substantially better than pure TiO2, and even superior to the benchmark Pt/C catalysts. These findings may open a new avenue for the development of low-cost alternative to noble metal catalysts for electrocatalytic hydrogen production.

Abstract:Heterogeneous catalysts with atomic dispersion play an important role in electrocatalysis. In addition to the single-atom, modifying the intrinsic catalytic capacity of single-atom catalysts through cooperative atom-clusters is an effective way to increase active sites and improve mass activity. Herein, a composite electrocatalytic material (Pt M @CN) with partial Pt single-atoms and partial Pt atom-clusters was obtained by pyrolysis of the thermostable UiO-66-PtTCPP precursor. Remarkably, beneficial to the synergistic effect of Pt single-atom and Pt atom-clusters as well as the strong metal-support interaction, the Pt M @CN catalyst showed excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity and stability in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes. Moreover, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations shows that the existence of Pt single-atom and Pt atom-clusters could rationally adjust electronic structure of supported metals and impact adsorption energy of reaction intermediates, which play an essential role in enhancing the electrocatalytic activity of HER.

Abstract:Co-catalyst loading provides an effective way to enhance the efficiency of photocatalysts for solar hydrogen production. From a sustainability point of view, it has immense scientific and technological values to explore more efficient co-catalytic systems by using multi-cocatalysts, because of potential synergetic effects between different components. Herein, the feasibility of using Ti3C2 MXene nanoparticles and Pt nanoclusters as dual co-catalysts to enhance the photoactivity of g-C3N4 for H2 production was investigated. Due to the improved electrical conductivity and increased reactive sites for photoreduction reactions, Ti3C2 and Pt co-modified photocatalysts exhibited a high photocatalytic hydrogen production activity of 5.1 mmol h-1 g-1. Compared to g-C3N4/Ti3C2 and g-C3N4/Pt, the 3- and 5-fold increased photoactivity demonstrated great potential of Ti3C2 MXene nanoparticles to construct high-performance photocatalysts. The synergetic effects between Ti3C2 and Pt were fundamentally investigated, indicating that the specific transfer of electrons not only contributed to the inhibited recombination of charge carriers but also resulted in good stability of heterostructured photocatalysts. Our results have demonstrated an approach worthy for the design and fabrication of high-efficiency heterostructures with superior photoactivity for hydrogen energy production.

Abstract:Understanding the non-covalent interactions occurring at electrocatalytic interfaces is important to promote the development of advanced hydrogen evolution systems. However, the exact role of non-covalent interaction in the electrode–electrolyte interface on the HER kinetics remains obscure at the molecular level, especially for non-platinum-based electrodes. This is due to the lack of an effective strategy to decouple the effect of each interaction (ΔGH, noncovalent interactions) on the HER kinetics. Accordingly, herein, we constructed a model catalyst surface (Pd,RuSOy) to decouple the influence of ΔGH and double-layer structure optimization on HER kinetics, thus exploring the role of this non-covalent interactions on the HER at the molecular level. We found that hydrated cations located in the outer Helmholtz plane (OHP) also interact directly with electrode materials and the strength of these interactions would also affect the HER activity. Consequently, Pd,RuS2−xOy exhibited remarkable electrocatalytic activity toward HER, which delivered low overpotentials of 38 and 82 mV at 10 and 100 mA cm−2, respectively. This study not only illustrates the roles of interfacial interactions, but also provides a new way for the rational design of advanced electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Tuning and stabilizing the chemical microenvironment of Pt-based single-atom catalysts is a major challenge for promoting the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here, we constructed a hierarchical stabilization system of Pt single-atom by defect substitution using polyoxometalates (POMs) (NH4)4[ZnMo6O24H6] (ZnMo6) as template. The well-defined structure of ZnMo6 led to precise local Zn sublimation during the formation of Mo2C which was converted from Mo6 ring in-situ. The localized defect provides a well-defined Mo(C)-Pt-N coordination environment to trap Pt single-atoms. The obtained single-atom catalyst (PtSA@Mo2C@NC) exhibited a superior and stable electrochemical HER performance with an unprecedented mass activity of 75.21 A·mgPt-1 in 0.5 M H2SO4. In-depth theoretical calculation analyses revealed that the Mo(C)-Pt-N coordination provide a moderated charge state and low d-band center of Pt site, thus significantly promoted proton adsorption and H2 desorption. This work demonstrates a promising single-atom stabilization strategy to construct high-performance HER electrocatalysts through the precise modulation of three-dimensional chemical environment.
