Abstract:Multifunctional electronic skins (e-skins), which mimic the somatosensory system of human skin, have been widely employed in wearable devices for intelligent robotics, prosthetics, and human health monitoring. Relatively low sensitivity and severe mutual interferences of multiple stimuli detection have limited the applications of the existing e-skins. To address these challenges, inspired by the physical texture of the natural fingerprint, a novel fully elastomeric e-skin is developed herein for highly sensitive pressure and temperature sensing. A region-partition strategy is utilized to construct the multifunctional fingerprint-shaped sensing elements, where strain isolation structure of indurated film patterns are further embedded to enhance the sensitivity and effectively reduce mutual interferences between the differentiated units. The fully elastomeric graphene/silver/silicone rubber nanocomposites are synthesized with tunable properties including conductivity and sensitivity to satisfy the requirements of highly sensitive pressure and temperature sensing as well as stretchable electrodes. A remarkable progress in sensitivities for both pressure and temperature, up to 5.53 kPa-1 in a wide range of 0.5-120 kPa and 0.42% ℃-1 in 25-60 ℃, respectively, are achieved with the inappreciable mutual interferences. Further studies demonstrate the great potential of the proposed e-skin in the next-generation wearable electronics for human-machine interfaces.

Abstract:Touch-sensitive screens are crucial components of wearable devices. Materials such as reduced graphene oxide (rGO), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and graphene offer promising solutions for flexible touch-sensitive screens. However, when stacked with flexible substrates to form multilayered capacitive touching sensors, these materials often suffer from substrate delamination in response to deformation; this is due to the materials having different Young’s modulus values. Delamination results in failure to offer accurate touch screen recognition. In this work, we demonstrate an induced charge-based mutual capacitive touching sensor capable of high-precision touch sensing. This is enabled by electron trapping and polarization effects related to mixed-coordinated bonding between copper nanoparticles and vertically grown graphene nanosheets. Here, we used an electron cyclotron resonance system to directly fabricate graphene–metal nanofilms (GMNFs) using carbon and copper, which are firmly adhered to flexible substrates. After being subjected to 3000 bending actions, we observed almost no change in touch sensitivity. The screen interaction system, which has a signal-to-noise ratio of 41.16 dB and resolution of 650 dpi, was tested using a handwritten Chinese character recognition trial and achieved an accuracy of 94.82

Abstract:Electronic skins (e-skins) with multifunctional sensing functions have attracted a lot of attention due to their promising applications in intelligent robotics, human-machine interfaces, and wearable healthcare systems. Here, we report a multifunctional e-skin based on patterned metal films for tactile sensing of pressure and temperature with a broad linear response range by implementing the single sensing mechanism of piezoresistivity, which allows for the easy signal processing and simple device configuration. The sensing pixel features serpentine metal traces and spatially distributed microprotrusions. Experimental and numerical studies reveal the fundamental aspects of the multifunctional tactile sensing mechanism of the e-skin, which exhibits excellent flexibility and wearable conformability. The fabrication approach being compatible with the well-established microfabrication processes has enabled the scalable manufacturing of a large-scale e-skin for spatial tactile sensing in various application scenarios.
Highly Stable Kirigami-Structured Stretchable Strain Sensors For Perdurable Wearable Electronics

Abstract:In wearable electronics, to acquire stability and simultaneously preserve stretchability, sensitivity, and scalability is of high significance yet challenging for practical device applications. In this work, a kirigami-structured graphene-polymer hybrid nanocomposite is proposed for strain sensors by a laser direct writing technique on a polyimide sheet. Using such kirigami structures, the strain in the sensor material can be drastically reduced in the circumstances of high stretching conditions. To protect the device, ecoflex polymer is applied as the passivation layer. Depending on the applications, ecoflex grid-wrapped and film-encapsulated devices are realized with high stretchability (>200% strain) and sensitivity (>80% resistance change at 60% strain), respectively. Significantly, this sensor platform presents almost no performance degradation even after >60 000 stretching cycle tests due to less strain within the sensor. Furthermore, as proof-of-concept for human-interactive applications, motion detection and respiration monitoring with a breathing period of 3-4 s for a comparatively long duration (>2 hours) are successfully demonstrated. These facile, scalable, highly stable and stretchable strain sensors afford a new route towards next-generation reliable skin-inspired wearable electronics.

Abstract:MXene materials have the metallic conductivity of transition metal carbides. Among them, Ti3C2TX with an accordion structure has great application prospects in the field of wearable devices. However, flexible wearable electronic devices face the problem of single function in practical application. Therefore, it is particularly important to study a flexible sensor with multiple functions for electronic skin. In this work, the near-field electrohydrodynamic printing (NFEP) method was proposed to prepare the composite thin film with a micro/nanofiber structure on the flexible substrate using a solution of poly(vinylidene fluoride)/MXene nanosheet/reduced graphene oxide (PMR) nanocomposites as the printing solution. A dual-mode flexible sensor for electronic skin based on the PMR nanocomposite thin film was fabricated. The flexible sensor had the detection capability of the piezoresistive mode and the piezoelectric mode. In the piezoresistive mode, the sensitivity was 29.27 kPa−1 and the response/recovery time was 36/55 ms. In the piezoelectric mode, the sensitivity was 8.84 kPa−1 and the response time was 18.2 ms. Under the synergy of the dual modes, functions that cannot be achieved by a single mode sensor can be accomplished. In the process of detecting the pressure or deformation of the object, more information is obtained, which broadens the application range of the flexible sensor. The experimental results show that the dual-mode flexible sensor has great potential in human motion monitoring and wearable electronic device applications.

Abstract:Electronic skin, a class of wearable electronic sensors that mimic the functionalities of human skin, has made remarkable success in applications including health monitoring, human-machine interaction and electronic-biological interfaces. While electronic skin continues to achieve higher sensitivity and faster response, its ultimate performance is fundamen-tally limited by the nature of low-frequency AC currents. Herein, highly sensitive skin-like wearable optical sensors are demonstrated by embedding glass micro/nanofibers (MNFs) in thin layers of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Enabled by the transition from guided modes into radiation modes of the waveguiding MNFs upon external stimuli, the skin-like opti-cal sensors show ultrahigh sensitivity (1870 kPa-1), low detection limit (7 mPa) and fast response (10 μs) for pressure sensing, significantly exceeding the performance metrics of state-of-the-art electronic skins. Electromagnetic interference (EMI)-free detection of high-frequency vibrations, wrist pulse and human voice are realized. Moreover, a five-sensor op-tical data glove and a 2×2-MNF tactile sensor are demonstrated. These initial results pave the way toward a new cate-gory of optical devices ranging from ultrasensitive wearable sensors to optical skins.

Abstract:through the total care unit. Perhaps this is done to protect the visitors from the sometimes discomforting images of total care. But perhaps it is because some nursing homes and long-term care professionals do not sufficiently value their unique ability and social obligation to provide this care. And this obligation will become even more apparent as providers develop their capacity to serve the moderately impaired in community settings. Nursing homes increasingly will become total care institutions. Contrast the often dark public image of nursing homes to the generally favorable public image experienced by the hospice movement. Hospices provide the services necessary to allow the terminally ill to live their final days in comfort, dignity, and with the involvement of their loved ones. Isn’t this also the essence of good care for the majority of long-stay nursing home residents? It is not the intent here to argue that nursing homes and hospices are the same or that nursing homes should be hospices. Rather, it is argued that nursing homes should believe in and be proud of their fundamental mission of caring for their total care residents just as the hospice movement is proud of its mission. Self-acceptance is a prerequisite for public acceptance. Professional organizations such as American Geriatrics Society and the Gerontological Society of America should encourage a heightened focus on the total care population and the persons who provide their care. It is not clear to me that the “state of the art” for total care has been defined, let alone disseminated. The 1990 conference that addressed the adequacy of long-term care of residents with dementia resulted in an excellent review of what is known about providing and evaluating care to that population.’ Persons requiring total care would benefit similarly from a focus on their specific needs. Total care is at the core of what nursing homes are all about. This fundamental mission should not be met with resigned acceptance. Rather, it is incumbent on the longterm care community to imbue it with value and to strive for its betterment.

Abstract:Noncontact electronic skin (e-skin), which possesses superior long-range and high-spatial-resolution sensory properties, is becoming indispensable in fulfilling the emulation of human sensation via prosthetics. Here, we present an advanced design and fabrication of all-graphene-based highly flexible noncontact e-skins by virtue of femtosecond laser direct writing (FsLDW). The photoreduced graphene oxide patterns function as the conductive electrodes, whereas the pristine graphene oxide thin film serves as the sensing layer. The as-fabricated e-skins exhibit high sensitivity, fast response-recovery behavior, good long-term stability, and excellent mechanical robustness. In-depth analysis reveals that the sensing mechanism is attributed to proton and ionic conductivity in the low and high humidity conditions, respectively. By taking the merits of the FsLDW, a 4 × 4 sensing matrix is facilely integrated in a single-step, eco-friendly, and green process. The light-weight and in-plane matrix shows high-spatial-resolution sensing capabilities over a long detection range in a noncontact mode. This study will open up an avenue to innovations in the noncontact e-skins and hold a promise for applications in wearable human-machine interfaces, robotics, and bioelectronics.

Abstract:In recent years, the innovation of wearable medical devices and flexible smart healthcare systems has benefited from the rapid development of flexible electronics, Internet of Things, and Internet health. In this work, a flexible capacitive proximity and pressure dual-mode sensor, which can be used for health detection, is proposed to be fabricated by dispensing printing combined with transfer printing. Sensor performance is strongly influenced by the material of its dielectric layer. A low concentration of graphitic carbon nitride (GCN) doping into polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) yields a composite material with a low dielectric constant, and the ideal doping ratio is found. The sensor's fork finger electrodes were prepared using dispense printing technology, and the GCN/PVDF dielectric layer was printed on them. The electrodes on the substrate were transferred to the dielectric layer using the composite material's characteristics. While ensuring the transfer printing effect, the sensor is guaranteed to have high sensitivity, fast response and large detection range, and has good performance in both contact and non-contact systems, and wireless data transmission is realized, indicating its great potential for application in medical monitoring.

Abstract:Flexible piezoresistive sensors hold a great potential with broad application spectrum in human-computer interaction and wearable electronic devices. Inspired by human touch sensation architecture, we report a new type of flexible piezoresistive sensor with ultrawide sensing range and highrobustness by engineering biomimetic structure and carbon black (CB)/MXene/SR/fiber nanocomposites. The facile fabrication processes, piezoresistive sensing mechanism, and performance of the device are comprehensively investigated. The sensor provides a high sensitivity of 2.18 kPa −1 , ultrawide linear sensing range of 0.1–1700 kPa, fast response time (∼100 ms), and reliable durability (>5000 cycles). Furthermore, the developed flexible devices have been effectively implemented as electronic skin, demonstrating potential functions in manipulator soft grabbing and human movement monitoring. Such architecture paves the way for great application in the fields of healthcare, human–machine interface, and extremely large pressure monitoring.

Direct fabrication of high-performance multi-response e-skin based on a graphene nanosheet film

Abstract:With the increasing popularity of wearable devices, lightweight electronic skin (e-skin) has attracted significant attention. However, current fabrication technologies make it difficult to directly fabricate sensing materials on flexible substrates at low temperatures. Hence, we propose a flexible graphene nanosheet-embedded carbon (F-GNEC) film, which is directly grown on a flexible substrate using an electron cyclotron resonance low-temperature sputtering system. The direct batch manufacturing of e-skin is obtained by the unique plasma generation mode of electron cyclotron resonance and the polariton energy transfer mode between the plasma and substrate surface. The F-GNEC film contains a large number of graphene nanosheets grown vertically and the graphene edges can serve as electron capture centers, thereby enabling the multi-response properties. We achieve a high gauge factor of 14,699 under a tensile strain of ε = 0.5% and the changing rate of the resistance reaches to 113.2% when the e-skin is bent to 120°. Furthermore, the e-skin achieves a photocurrent of 1.2 μA under 532 nm laser illumination. The F-GNEC film exhibits a sensitive temperature response and achieves a coefficient of -0.58%/°C in a wide temperature range (30-100 °C). The directly fabricated F-GNEC film-based e-skin is stable and firm and exhibits multi-response detection capabilities, which enable its potential application in virtual reality technology and flexible robots.

Abstract:Electronic skin with high sensitivity, rapid response, and long-term stability has great value in robotics, biomedicine, and in other fields. However, electronic skin still has challenges in terms of sensitivity and response time. In order to solve this problem, flexible electronic skin with high sensitivity and the fast response was proposed, based on piezoresistive graphene films. The electronic skin was a pressure sensor array, composed of a tactile sensing unit. Each sensing unit contained three layers: The underlying substrate (polyimide substrate), the middle layer (graphene/polyethylene terephthalate film), and the upper substrate bump (polydimethylsiloxane). The results of the measurement and analysis experiments, designed in this paper, indicated that the flexible electronic skin achieved a positive resistance characteristic in the range of 0 kPa-600 kPa, a sensitivity of/kPa in the range of 0 kPa-4 kPa, a loading response time of 10 ms, and a spatial resolution of 5 mm. In addition, the electronic skin realized shape detection on a regular-shaped object, based on the change in the resistance value of each unit. The high sensitivity flexible electronic skin designed in this paper has important application prospects in medical diagnosis, artificial intelligence, and other fields.

Abstract:A flexible skin bionic thermally comfortable wearable is prepared for machine learning‐facilitated ultrasensitive sensing from thermal conductive boron nitride nanosheets‐incorporated polyurethane elastomer substrate with MXene‐coated surface microdomes as epidermis/spinosum layers assembled with contact electrode, featuring ultrahigh sensitivity (up to 288.95 kPa−1), wide sensing range, excellent cycling stability, and outstanding thermal management for wearable healthcare monitoring and intelligent human–machine interaction. Tremendous popularity is observed for multifunctional flexible electronics with appealing applications in intelligent electronic skins, human–machine interfaces, and healthcare sensing. However, the reported sensing electronics, mostly can hardly provide ultrasensitive sensing sensitivity, wider sensing range, and robust cycling stability simultaneously, and are limited of efficient heat conduction out from the contacted skin interface after wearing flexible electronics on human skin to satisfy thermal comfort of human skin. Inspired from the ultrasensitive tactile perception microstructure (epidermis/spinosum/signal transmission) of human skin, a flexible comfortably wearable ultrasensitive electronics is hereby prepared from thermal conductive boron nitride nanosheets‐incorporated polyurethane elastomer matrix with MXene nanosheets‐coated surface microdomes as epidermis/spinosum layers assembled with interdigitated electrode as sensing signal transmission layer. It demonstrates appealing sensing performance with ultrasensitive sensitivity (≈288.95 kPa−1), up to 300 kPa sensing range, and up to 20 000 sensing cycles from obvious contact area variation between microdome microstructures and the contact electrode under external compression. Furthermore, the bioinspired electronics present advanced thermal management by timely efficient thermal dissipation out from the contacted skin surface to meet human skin thermal comfort with the incorporated thermal conductive boron nitride nanosheets. Thus, it is vitally promising in wearable artificial electronic skins, intelligent human‐interactive sensing, and personal health management.

Abstract:Wearable touch panels, a typical flexible electronic device, can recognize and feed back the information of finger touch and movement. Excellent wearable touch panels are required to accurately and quickly monitor the signals of finger movement as well as the capacity of bearing various types of deformation. High-performance thermistor materials are one of the key functional components, but to date, a long-standing bottleneck is that inorganic semiconductors are typically brittle while the electrical properties of organic semiconductors are quite low. Herein, a high-performance flexible temperature sensor is reported by using plastic Ag2 S with ultrahigh temperature coefficient of resistance of -4.7% K-1 and resolution of 0.05 K, and rapid response/recovery time of 0.11/0.11 s. Moreover, the temperature sensor shows excellent durability without performance damage or loss during force stimuli tests. In addition, a fully flexible intelligent touch panel composed of a 16 × 10 Ag2 S-film-based temperature sensor array, as well as a flexible printed circuit board and a deep-learning algorithm is designed for perceiving finger touch signals in real-time, and intelligent feedback of Chinese characters and letters on an app. These results strongly show that high-performance flexible inorganic semiconductors can be widely used in flexible electronics.

Abstract:To achieve the wearable comfort of electronic skin (e-skin), a capacitive sensor printed on a flexible textile substrate with a carbon black (CB)/silicone rubber (SR) composite dielectric was demonstrated in this paper. Organo-silicone conductive silver adhesive serves as a flexible electrodes/shielding layer. The structure design, sensing mechanism and the influence of the conductive filler content and temperature variations on the sensor performance were investigated. The proposed device can effectively enhance the flexibility and comfort of wearing the device asthe sensing element has achieved a sensitivity of 0.02536%/KPa, a hysteresis error of 5.6%, and a dynamic response time of ~89 ms at the range of 0–700 KPa. The drift induced by temperature variations has been calibrated by presenting the temperature compensation model. The research on the time–space distribution of plantar pressure information and the experiment of the manipulator soft-grasping were implemented with the introduced device, and the experimental results indicate that the capacitive flexible textile tactile sensor has good stability and tactile perception capacity. This study provides a good candidate for wearable artificial skin.

Abstract:Multi-functional electronic skin is of paramount significance for wearable electronics in health monitoring, medical analysis, and human-machine interfacing systems. In order to achieve the function of natural skin, mechanical sensing with high sensitivity is an important feature of electronic skin. Inspired by the spinosum structure under the skin, herein, we fabricate a new capacitive pressure sensor with two-dimensional transition-metal carbides and nitrides (MXene) and ferroelectric polymer (P(VDF-TrFE-CFE)) as an active layer and micropatterned Cr-Au deposited on polydimethylsiloxane as flexible electrodes. Such a method is facile, effective, easily operated, and low-cost. The device design provides great capacitive change as a consequence of large deformation under pressure. Benefiting from the randomly distributed microstructure and high dielectric constant of the active layer, the device demonstrates high sensitivity with great linearity (16.0 kPa−1 for less than 10 kPa), that is, a low detection limit of 8.9 Pa, and quick response. A series of dynamic physiological signals, including typing, knuckle motion, and voice recognition can be facilely detected, making it a competitive candidate in the field of wearable electronics.

Abstract:As an ideal candidate to imitate the perception of human-skin, multifunctional electronic skin (e-skin) has attracted remarkable attention, which has promising applications in industrial robots, intelligent prosthetics and medical monitoring. Herein, we propose a dual-functional flexible sensor with common electrode for advanced pressure-humidity sensing, which is structured by Poly(vinylidenefluoride-cotrifluoroethylene) nanofiber composites based multilayer films. Benefiting from the common use of the interdigital electrode, the structure and external circuit of the proposed flexible sensor are simplified and the crosstalk could be effectively prevented to realize independent sensing. The flexible sensor not only demonstrates excellent pressure sensing performance including high sensitivity, long stability and fairly good ohmic contact, but also exhibits fast response/recovery time, small hysteresis and outstanding long-term stability in humidity sensing, showing excellent potential applications in real-time monitoring of human physiological information. Additionally, based on its excellent performances, an advanced wearable gesture monitoring system for real-time display and an intelligent safety monitoring system to achieve dual-risk avoidance of contact (pressure) and non-contact (humidity) is realized. This work provides a feasible strategy for designing a high performance dual-functional flexible sensor without interference, and presents a roadmap on constructing practical e-skin system in dynamic detection of gestures and better human-robot collaboration.

Abstract:The emerging field of flexible tactile sensing systems, equipped with multi-physical tactile sensing capabilities, holds vast potential across diverse domains such as medical monitoring, robotics, and human–computer interaction. In response to the prevailing challenges associated with the limited integration and sensitivity of flexible tactile sensors, this paper introduces a versatile tactile sensing system capable of concurrently monitoring temperature and pressure. The temperature sensor employs carbon nanotube/graphene conductive paste as its sensitive material, while the pressure sensor integrates an ionic gel containing boron nitride as its sensitive layer. Through the application of cost-effective screen printing technology, we have successfully manufactured a flexible dual-mode sensor with exceptional performance, featuring high sensitivity (804.27 kPa−1), a broad response range (50 kPa), rapid response time (17 ms), and relaxation time (34 ms), alongside exceptional durability over 5000 cycles. Furthermore, the resistance temperature coefficient of the sensor within the temperature range of 12.5 °C to 93.7 °C is −0.17% °C−1. The designed flexible dual-mode tactile sensing system enables the real-time detection of pressure and temperature information, presenting an innovative approach to electronic skin with multi-physical tactile sensing capabilities.

Abstract:The development of flexible electronic skins with high performance and multifunctional sensing capabilities is of great significance for applications ranging from healthcare monitoring to artificial intelligence. To mimic and surpass the high-gauge-factor sensing properties of human skin, structure design and appropriate material selection of sensors are both essentially required. Here, we present an efficient, low-cost fabrication strategy to construct an ultra-highly sensitive, flexible pressure sensor by embedding the aligned nickel-coated carbon fibers (NICFs) in a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate. Our design substantially contributes to ultrahigh sensitivity through the parallel circuit formed by aligned NICFs as well as surface spinosum microstructure molded by sandpaper. As a result, the sensor exhibits excellent sensitivity (15 525 kPa<sup>-1</sup>), a fast response time (30 ms), and good stability over 3000 loading-unloading cycles. Furthermore, these superior sensing properties trigger applications in water quality and wave monitoring in conjunction with mechanical flexibility and robustness. As a precedent for adjusting the sensitivities of the sensor, the NICFs/PDMS sensor provides a promising method for multiscenario healthcare monitoring, multiscale pressure spatial distribution, and human-machine interfacing.
