Abstract:There is a widely recognized need for nursing faculty in the United States. To prepare a practice-ready workforce, schools of nursing are hiring faculty with Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) preparation to ensure clinical expertise is embedded into curriculum by practice experts. However, nurses transitioning from clinical nursing to faculty positions require tailored support and guidance in navigating the academic environment. Preparation for academic promotion is essential to integration into an academic setting. Support in navigating the new environment is essential for building confidence, to lay a foundation for a successful transition, and ultimately retaining these qualified educators. This article provides strategies to support nursing faculty planning to embark on an academic career track and provides guidance on how to prepare these DNP-prepared faculty for career progression and future promotion along academic ranks. These strategies include school and institutional orientation, faculty development plans, mentorship, leadership development, and performance review processes.

Abstract:In 2020, deans from top-ranked nursing schools authored a Nursing Outlook article titled, "Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Degree in the United States: Reflecting, Readjusting, and Getting Back on Track." In 2022, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing published the report, "State of the Doctor of Nursing Practice Education."- Both have been critical to advancing national discussions on the implementation of a universal DNP practiceentry standard in nursing. This paper, written by Chief Nursing Officers from top-ranked academic medical centers, reports on perspectives from practice settings/employers regarding issues raised by educators and deans in those documents. Barriers to acceptance of the DNP degree in practice include a lack of degree standardization, a need for DNP outcomes data, and a desire for a clearer return on investment for the DNP degree among graduates and employers.

Abstract:“Reality shock 1.0,” which is experienced by new nursing graduates as they enter the nursing profession, has been an issue of concern for decades. Since the proliferation of multiple nursing doctoral degree programs, beginning in approximately 2004, when the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (2013) recommended that the doctor of nursing practice (DNP) replace the master’s degree as the minimum for advanced practice nursing, an era of reverse “reality shock 2.0” may be developing for graduates of DNP programs. Specifically, early evidence indicates that the acquisition of an academic position, and its attendant transition back to the academia, may be difficult. The purpose of this article is to deconstruct the typical process of being interviewed and accepted (appointed) as a tenure-track faculty member at a teaching-intensive 4-year public institution and to recommend strategies for obtaining the best salary, benefits, and other resources during the negotiation process.
Capturing the Impact of the Doctor of Nursing Practice Degree on West Texas Health Care

Abstract:Background: This article describes findings from a Phase 1 investigation exploring the influence of Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)-prepared nurses in West Texas. Method: Following a focus group session with eight practicing DNPs, the focus group shared how their roles effected safer health care. Results: Final takeaways included their commitment to safer health care and prevention, moving care to the community, and a wish for more variety in projects generated in workplaces. Three themes emerged from the data: DNP leadership practice affects health outcomes through improved quality of care, influence, and innovation; DNP strengths include communication, leadership, and ability to change others' thinking; and the influence of DNP-prepared leaders at all external levels occurs through both increasing awareness of the role and influencing in multiple areas. DNP challenges include lack of understanding by others of the role and the lack of recognition and respect for their educational preparation. Conclusion: Leading, innovating, and communicating during constantly changing care models are key skills needed during the current health care crisis. These skills are basic to DNP practice. Reconceptualizing the core of nurse practitioner education and practice

Abstract:Purpose: The movement to the doctor of nursing practice (DNP) is progressing rapidly with new programs emerging and curricular documents being developed. We argue that the implementation of the DNP is a good move for nursing, provided that we use the opportunity to reconceptualize the core of advanced practice nursing, especially nurse practitioner (NP) practice. Data sources: Theory and research articles from nursing focused on advanced practice nursing, NPs, and doctoral education. Conclusions: The foundation of NP education is currently based essentially on borrowed or shared content in assessment, pharmacology, and pathophysiology. We argue that the heart and soul of nursing is in health promotion, both in healthy persons and in those dealing with chronic illness. Current master's programs do not prepare NPs to assume high-level practice focused on health promotion and disease management using the latest theoretical developments in health behavior change, behavioral sciences, exercise physiology, nutrition, and medical anthropology. Although these are touched upon in most NP programs, they do not represent the core science of NP education and need to be a critical part of any DNP program. Implications for practice: Ultimately, our vision is for NP care to be consistently "different," yet just as essential as physician care, leading to positive outcomes in health promotion and disease management.
The business of Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) education: Practical application strategies to apply business concepts in DNP education

Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of this article is to 1) review updated business competencies in The Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education for Advanced-Level Nursing Education (2021) and 2) suggest strategies on how to integrate business and finance concepts encompassing quality, safety, and systems-based practice into DNP educational curricula. Background: The Institute of Medicine recognizes strong nursing leadership on all system levels from "bedside to boardroom" as critical to redesigning healthcare that is affordable and accessible. The business of healthcare requires the DNP-prepared nurse to be equipped to understand and navigate business principles necessary for sustainable change to improve patient outcomes. The updated 2021 AACN Essentials include enhanced business concepts and competencies as curricular elements to prepare practice-ready DNP prepared leaders. Findings: Current healthcare translation of research to practice has historically been slow, and only recently has the average time for research to translate to practice decreased from 17 years to 15 years. DNP-prepared nurses, as evidence-based practice and quality improvement experts, are positioned perfectly to reduce this research translation time gap to improve patient outcomes by implementing evidence-based change. Employers outside the academic setting, and arguably even within the academic setting, often fail to understand this unique skill set of a DNP-prepared nurse. A lack of business expertise disadvantages s the DNP-prepared nurses 'ability to effectively communicate and demonstrate the ROI and value added to an organization or interprofessional team. Achieving competency with business concepts during DNP education such as marketing, budgeting, return on investment, healthcare finance and interprofessional collaboration are critical components for a practice-ready DNP graduate as noted within the revised AACN Essentials (2021). Discussion: The didactic content of business education that meets the 2021 AACN Essentials can be integrated in established DNP core courses or through creating new courses in the curriculum. Students through innovative assignments, immersion experiences, and the DNP final scholarly project can demonstrate application and competence of learned business principles. Strategically integrating business concepts into DNP curriculum provides multiple benefits to the DNP graduate, organizations, and ultimately, patients.
Celebrating over 20 years: Outcomes from the first doctor of nursing practice program

Abstract:The first Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program was opened at the University of Kentucky College of Nursing (UKCON) in 2001. As the CON celebrates 20 plus years of DNP education, leaders decided to do an assessment of the accomplishments and outcomes from the work of graduates. The purpose of this study was to delineate the achievements, outcomes and perception of the impact of graduates from the UKCON DNP program and assess the correlations of specific "perception of impact" variables. DNP graduates from 2005 to 2021 (n = 348) received an email about the study and a link to the survey. Ninety graduates who resided in 14 states responded. Over 84 % of participants indicated that their DNP degree helped them stand out as a leader. Participants reported that having a DNP education increased their knowledge and expertise in multiple areas, including how to lead, to influence, and to improve outcomes within their organizations. Narrative feedback related to top achievements since graduation included career advancement/promotion (n = 22), improving patient care quality/implementation of evidence-based initiatives (n = 21), and becoming a better leader (n = 19). This study illustrated the broad return on investment and the quantification of value that a DNP education brings, both to practice and academia.

Abstract:Objective: The objective of this narrative review of Doctor of Nursing Practice implementation is to present the background leading to the 2004 American Association of Colleges of Nursing recommendation that the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree be required for advanced practice, discuss the implementation of programs, identify challenges, and provide recommendations for the future. Method: Both publications and organizational documents, such as white papers and position statements, were reviewed to identify the historical antecedents to the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree recommendation. A review of the status of the degree acceptance by professional organizations was conducted to identify current trends and challenges. Summary: In 2004, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing voted to require the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree for advanced practice providers by 2015. This occurred within a broad initiative within health science disciplines to move to a practice doctorate. The need for the degree was supported by the Institute of Medicine 2002 recommendation for additional competencies in health professions education and the National Research Council 2005 recommendation that nursing create a clinical doctorate. The goal of the Doctor of Nursing Practice by 2015 has not been met, although programs are growing across the country with varying models of education. Currently nurse anesthesia requires the Doctor of Nursing Practice, clinical nurse specialists have a target date for the requirement of the Doctor of Nursing Practice, nurse practitioner recommendations are to move from the master’s level to the Doctor of Nursing Practice, but certification bodies have not required it, and nurse midwives will accept but have not endorsed a requirement for the Doctor of Nursing Practice. Nurse executives have recommended the Doctor of Nursing Practice for advanced leadership, but many health systems do not require it. There are multiple challenges to developing a pathway to the Doctor of Nursing Practice, including the multiple organizations influencing educational programs, the certification and licensure of graduates, and the employment practices by health systems. These challenges will have to be addressed to achieve the original goal of doctoral education for advanced practice in nursing.
Strategic innovation between PhD and DNP programs: Collaboration, collegiality, and shared resources

Abstract:Background: At least 111 schools and colleges of nursing across the nation provide both PhD and DNP programs (AACN, 2014a). Collaboration between nurses with doctoral preparation as researchers (PhD) and practitioners (DNP) has been recommended as essential to further the profession; that collaboration can begin during the educational process. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to describe the development and implementation of successful DNP and PhD program collaboration, and to share the results of that collaboration in an educational setting. Methods: Faculty set strategic goals to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of both new DNP and existing PhD programs. The goals were to promote collaboration and complementarity between the programs through careful capstone and dissertation differentiation, complementary residency activities, joint courses and inter-professional experiences; promote collegiality in a blended on-line learning environment through shared orientation and intensive on-campus sessions; and maximize resources in program delivery through a supportive organizational structure, equal access to technology support, and shared faculty responsibilities as appropriate to terminal degrees. Discussion: Successes such as student and faculty accomplishments, and challenges such as managing class size and workload, are described. Conclusions: Collaboration, collegiality and the sharing of resources have strengthened and enriched both programs and contributed to the success of students, faculty. These innovative program strategies can provide a solid foundation for DNP and PhD collaboration.

Abstract:Background: With an increasing number of doctor of nursing practice (DNP) graduates, the volume of peer-reviewed journal publications among DNP-prepared nurses is rising. Purpose: The primary aim of this study was to quantify, analyze, and categorize DNP-authored peer-reviewed journal publications. Methods: A descriptive research design was used to analyze DNP-authored peer-reviewed journal publications in the WorldCat, EBSCO Discovery Service, and PubMed databases from 2011 through 2021. Results: The 3839 journal publications included at least one DNP-prepared nurse author. There were 2495 (65%) publications with a DNP first author, 921 (24%) with a DNP solo author, and 2918 (76%) included publication collaboration. The majority of publications were practice- (40%), nursing- (17%), and education-focused (15%). Science translation in evidence-based practice and quality improvement publications accounted for 24%. Conclusions: This study demonstrates the proliferation of DNP-authored peer-reviewed journal publications, which may indicate an increase in the number of nursing care quality initiatives occurring in the clinical setting.

Preparing Nurse Practitioner Graduates for the Transition to Practice

Abstract:Background: Educators ensure that nurse practitioner (NP) students meet core competencies prior to graduation. Post-graduation, students navigate certification, licensure, resume building, and job searches. A statewide virtual conference was developed to help students during the transition to advanced nursing practice. Method: Information was presented on professional role development, resume writing, interviewing, licensure, certification, contract negotiation, and transitioning to a provider role. Results: Nearly all participants (92%) were able to describe the status of NP practice and licensure requirements. Most attendees (90%) valued the insight shared by panelists. Many students (88%) felt more prepared to negotiate a contract. Conclusion: Current educational programs lack the time to thoroughly address NP graduates' learning needs regarding transition to practice. A partnership between faculties and a state professional organization is an innovative approach to meet students' educational desires. Building a Consortium to Address Graduate Nursing Student Academic Preparedness

Abstract:Background: The demand for nurses in advanced practice roles is expected to grow by 38% by 2032. The nationwide faculty shortage is also a concern, as it correlates to the nursing shortage. Successful retention strategies for graduate nursing students can strengthen the rising demand of specialized nursing roles. Problem: The transition from clinical practice to the graduate student environment can be daunting to some practicing nurses who may struggle with program completion. It is well documented that graduate nursing students lack academic preparation for the rigorous scholarly work. Approach: A national onboarding consortium of graduate nursing faculty was formed to meet regularly and utilize a model onboarding program to address graduate nursing students' academic preparedness. Conclusions: Structured onboarding programs show promising results. The programs were easily adopted to support students from various backgrounds and regions within the United States. Benefits of forming a consortium to address a national issue were evident.

Abstract:<p>Those involved in preparing the next generation of nurse scientists face numerous challenges, including but not limited to: relatively older age at completion of doctoral studies, insufficient funding for full-time PhD students in nursing, inadequate funding for nursing research, and the limited number of well-funded mentors in nursing doctoral programs. These issues have limited the number of students enrolled in PhD nursing programs and graduates to supply the research faculty of the future and generate nursing science. This phenomenon persists despite numerous calls to increase the number of PhD doctoral students and graduates and expedite the PhD process without compromising educational integrity. This article describes the BSN-to-PhD Pathway and the Accelerated (3 year) Pathway to the nursing PhD at an established research doctoral program that required a shift in the approach to student recruitment, curriculum development, and timely progression. Implications for practice and research are discussed.</p>

Facilitators of and Barriers to Effective Preceptorships for Pre-licensure Nursing Students: What Nursing Faculty Need to Know

Abstract:Introduction: Preceptorships offer prelicensure nursing students the opportunity to meet their clinical objectives by working one-on-one with a registered nurse (RN). Although preceptorships can be provided for any clinical course, most prelicensure nursing programs offer them during the final semester. Preceptorships provide a bridge between academic study and the real world of nursing. By acting as a teacher, role model, evaluator, and person who can help a student to socialize with the profession, a preceptor can reduce the reality shock experienced by new nurses and provide them with realistic expectations about the nursing profession. The recent nursing shortage has inadvertently led to a preceptor shortage and forced the nursing leadership to become dependent on available RNs, including those without preceptor training or experience. Purpose: This practice update paper aimed to address the facilitators and barriers associated with preceptorships for prelicensure nursing students and discuss the proposed solutions for effective clinical preceptorship based on evidence and the author's personal reflections. Conclusion: The major facilitators were the discussion of nursing program expectations, the selection of teaching strategies with real-world examples, the creation of a structured weekly plan to promote learning, and the consideration of alternative teaching approaches. The major barriers were preceptors' dual responsibilities to students and patients, challenging students, and the lack of experienced preceptors. The proposed solutions included obtaining support from the nursing leadership team to ensure that the preceptor had a balanced workload, developing the emotional competence of the preceptor, addressing challenging students through a three-way conference with the student, the preceptor, and the clinical faculty and a written plan to ensure student progress, having the nursing leadership conduct periodic assessments of the preceptor pool, and ensuring that appropriate training was offered to candidates who were willing to become preceptors.
The Perceived Benefits of a Preparing Future Faculty Program and Its Effect on Job Satisfaction, Confidence, and Competence

Abstract:The training of effective instructors and future faculty members is a critical component of doctoral programs in sociology. Many universities and departments have instituted a single course, course sequence, or certification program dedicated to the preparation of future academic faculty. This article evaluates the efficacy of one such program, and asks two questions: (1) What are the most useful aspects of the Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) program? (2) Is participation in the PFF program associated with greater job satisfaction, confidence, or competence? Qualitative data from Indiana University alumni suggest that the program is beneficial for exposing students to pedagogical knowledge, encouraging professionalization, and providing institutionalized support in the form of peer and faculty mentorship. Quantitative data indicate that although PFF participants were not significantly more satisfied or confident than their nonparticipating peers, the PFF program did appear to help to make participants feel more competent in their first jobs.

Mentoring Experiences of New Nontenured Faculty in Undergraduate Nursing: A Qualitative Study

Abstract:Background: Mentoring is crucial for professional development and retention of newly hired nurse faculty, yet little is known about the actual mentoring experiences of clinical nurses in their first few years following transition into academic teaching. Method: Individual semistructured interviews were conducted with 23 full-time nontenure-track faculty from 10 higher education institutions in seven states in the United States. All of the faculty were in the first 3 years of teaching in 4-year undergraduate nursing programs. Results: Five themes emerged: (1) chaotic work environments characterized by unpredictable workloads, absence of reliable support, and inconsistent access to information; (2) a de facto do-it-yourself system in which nurses pieced together their own support; (3) reliance on personal social networks; (4) yearning for real mentorship; and (5) future plans about staying in the role. Conclusion: A gap exists between widely touted recommendations about mentoring and the reality of mentoring for newly hired nontenure-track faculty. [J Nurs Educ. 2024;63(8):525-532.].
Innovative Nursing Faculty Education for Novice Educators

Abstract:Background: The nursing faculty shortage in the United States affects enrollment of qualified nursing applicants. The gap may be filled by contracting with clinical nursing experts who often lack the content knowledge as academic nurse educators. Such content includes management of the classroom, evaluation, and legal issues. This article describes a course to provide new faculty with essential information for classroom teaching. Method: Nursing faculty were recruited from multiple education programs and enrolled in one of three sections of a course for new educators. Learners completed activities related to curriculum, evaluation, and academic roles. Results: Focus group evaluations were conducted. Themes emerged related to classroom teaching, learning experiences, improved understanding of nursing education, and knowledge for the scope of nursing faculty responsibilities. Conclusion: Each course provided experience in nursing education pedagogy and practice. Learners developed a wider array of teaching expertise and awareness of the faculty role in the classroom. Navigating the pathway to advanced practice: A grounded theory of nurse practitioner role transition in a fellowship

Abstract:Background: Greater attention to the transitional period for advanced practice nurses has urged health care organizations and employers to implement fellowships. Currently, the theoretical process of nurse practitioner (NP) role transition from the essential perspectives of NP fellows does not exist. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to construct a middle-range theory grounded in reality of an NP fellowship environment that explains how NPs transition to their new role. Methodology: Following Charmaz's constructivist methodology, 11 NPs who transitioned to practice in a fellowship were interviewed. Results: “Navigating the Pathway to Advanced Practice: A Grounded Theory of Nurse Practitioner Role Transition in a Fellowship” emerged from the data and is composed of through five phases: (1) mapping a path, (2) stepping onto the trailhead, (3) navigating the trailway, (4) gaining traction, and (5) summiting. Conclusions: The resulting middle-range theory is the first in the nursing literature that conceptualizes meaning about NP role transition in a fellowship. This process occurs in the contextual factor of a realm of support that includes growth, value, lifelong learning, and readiness. Throughout this process, NPs build competence and confidence that advances them to summit, or transition, to their NP role at the completion of an NP fellowship. Implications: This discovery will fill the research gap pertaining to best practice interventions in support of NPs during role transition in fellowships. Understanding how NPs transition to their new advanced practice roles may inform organizations on how to structure fellowships that support learning, encourage confidence, and enhance competence.

Change in expectations: A policy recommendation for future and current nurse educators

Abstract:Currently, there are no standardized requirements for pedagogical preparation for nurse educators at the state and national level. Various stakeholders have identified an issue in the preparation of nurse educators in academia. Current recommendations are that faculty have a master's or doctoral degree in nursing (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2017); however, requirements do not include educational preparation prior to or concurrent with starting a faculty position. This policy paper highlights a recommendation to require one of the following: the Certified Nurse Educator credential or certificate in teaching for educators without prior formal education in pedagogy. Outcomes of such a requirement would include nurse educators have a better understanding of the science of nursing education and preparation related to teaching. Publication patterns of graduates from a DNP program with submission of a manuscript as a degree requirement

Abstract:Background: Nurses who earn a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree are expected to make essential contributions to the scholarship of practice and the improvement of health care outcomes. The DNP program at Duke University School of Nursing requires that students demonstrate scholarship competence by writing a manuscript based on their DNP project and submitting it for publication. Purpose: The purpose of this article is to share an evaluation of the effectiveness of this approach. Methods: The authors used a bibliometric study design. Results: This study demonstrates that manuscripts authored by students based on the DNP projects they conduct while earning their DNP degree can be published and are cited by other scholars. Additionally, the majority of these authors continue to publish scholarly work in the nursing and broader health-focused literature after they graduate. Conclusion: Nurses who developed and submit manuscripts for publication based on their DNP project contribute to the literature and evidence base for practice.
