Abstract:In a global context, the hydrochemical characteristics of shallow groundwater in coalfields exhibit high degrees of diversity and complexity that are rooted in the intricate interplay of geological variations, diverse climatic conditions, and extensive human activities. The specific types and concentrations of ions, such as Ca 2+ , Cl − , and NO 3 − , show stark differences across geographical regions. Given the crucial roles of coalfields as energy suppliers, the potential environmental contamination risks posed by mining activities to groundwater cannot be overlooked as such pollution directly impacts human health and ecological safety. This study focuses on the Huainan coal mining area in northern Anhui Province (China), where shallow groundwater samples were systematically collected and analyzed to determine the hydrochemical characteristics and ascertain the water quality status. By integrating hydrogeochemical analysis techniques with inverse modeling methods, it was revealed that the groundwater in this region is predominantly HCO 3 -Ca type, exhibiting weak alkaline characteristics. The formation mechanisms are primarily governed by silicate rock weathering and mineral dissolution–precipitation processes, albeit with discernible influences from human activities. PHREEQC simulations were used to further confirm the precipitation tendencies of minerals like calcite, dolomite, and fluorite as well as the significant dissolution characteristics of halite. The inverse modeling pathway analysis reveals specific hydrochemical processes along different paths: paths I and IV are notably dominated by Ca 2+ dissolution–precipitation and cation exchange–adsorption processes, whereas paths II and III are closely associated with the precipitation of calcium montmorillonite as well as dissolution of kaolinite, calcite, quartz, and mineral incongruents. Moreover, evaluations based on the entropy-weighted water quality index (EWQI) indicated overall positive trends of the groundwater quality indicators within the Huainan mining area, reflecting the effectiveness of regional water quality management efforts and providing a scientific basis for future water quality protection and improvement strategies. In summary, this study not only deepens our understanding of the groundwater chemistry in the Huainan coal mining area but also underscores the importance of scientifically assessing and managing groundwater resources to address the environmental challenges potentially arising from coal mining activities.

Abstract:Hulun Buir Grassland is a world-famous natural pasture. The Chenbalhu Banner coalfield, the hinterland of the grassland, is located on the west slope of the Great Khingan Mountains and on the north bank of the Hailar River in China. The proven geological reserves of coal are 17 billion tons. Hulun Buir Grassland plays a role in the ecological barrier, regional coal industry, power transmission from west to east and power transmission from north to south. The proportion of local groundwater in irrigation, domestic and industrial production water sources is about 86%. The large-scale exploitation of coal resources and the continuous emergence of large unit and coal-fired power plants have consumed a large amount of local water resources, resulting in the decrease of the local groundwater level and changing the natural flow field of groundwater. This paper studies the background hydrochemical values and evaluates the irrigatibility of the whole Chenbaerhu Banner coalfield, and studies the impact of coal industry chains such as mining areas and coal chemical plants on the hydrochemistry characteristics of groundwater. The above two studies provide important guiding values for guiding local economic structure planning, groundwater resources exploitation and ecological governance. The study found that Na+ and HCO3− in the groundwater in the study area occupy a dominant position. Referring to the comparison of the lowest values of three types of water standards in the Quality Standards for Groundwater (GB/T14848-2017), the amount of NH4+, Na+ and NO2− exceeding the standard is close to more than 30%. The main chemical types of river water in the study area are HCO3− Na and HCO3− Ca·Na, the main chemical types of surface water are HCO3− Na and HCO3− Na·Ca, and the main chemical type of confined water is HCO3−Na. The formation of hydrochemical types is mainly affected by the dissolution, filtration and evaporation of rocks, specifically the dissolution and filtration of sodium and calcium salts. The chemical correlation analysis of groundwater shows that there are abnormal values at many points in the study area. Further combining with the horizontal comparison of surface human activities in the study area, it shows that the influence scope of coal mine production and coal chemical plants on groundwater is extremely limited. The local groundwater is mainly polluted by a large quantity of local cattle and sheep manure, industrial and domestic sewage pollution and farmland fertilizer.

Abstract:Groundwater resource protection and use are major challenges for the development of the coal industry in the long term. It is therefore crucial to investigate hydrogeochemical processes for sustainable groundwater resource use. A complex multi-layered groundwater system in a coal mine area was investigated and hierarchical cluster analysis, hydrochemical correlation analysis, and stable isotope analysis were applied to identify the water-rock interactions in the six reaction zones. Mineral dissolution and precipitation, cation exchange, sulfate reduction, and evaporation were the potential reactions. Three hydrogeochemical transport paths were derived using inverse simulation. The study found a connection between river water, pit lake water, and the Quaternary loose aquifer (QLA), indicating a contamination threat. Cross contamination between the Ordovician fracture limestone aquifer (OFA) water and QLA water, the Carboniferous fracture limestone aquifer (CFA) water, and Xie River water is possible, and after pit closure, mine water could contaminate QLA water. Therefore, measures to prevent cross-contamination due to these connections should be taken. The results provide a scientific basis for groundwater quality management in the study area and in other coal mines within the Huabei coalfield.

Abstract:This study evaluated the quality of groundwater and its suitability for drinking and irrigation in the hilly area of the Taihang Mountains in Henan Province, China. Groundwater samples were collected from 43 unconfined and 20 confined wells and analyzed. The pollution index of groundwater (PIG) was estimated based on the physicochemical parameters, and seven indices, including the sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), sodium percentage (%Na), residual sodium carbonate (RSC), permeability index (PI), magnesium ratio (MR), Kelley's ratio (KR), and corrosivity ratio (CR), were calculated to qualify the groundwater within the research area for irrigation activities. Multivariate statistical techniques were performed to better understand the hydrochemical processes. Chemical analysis showed that the dominant cation and anion were Ca2+ and HCO3−, respectively, and the principal hydrochemical facies was Ca–Mg–HCO3. In terms of pH, total dissolved solids, Na+, Cl−, F−, and SO42−, most samples were well within the limits prescribed by Chinese standards for drinking water quality, but more than half of the unconfined samples exceeded the specified limits for total hardness and nitrate. The PIG values suggested the pollution level was insignificant for all confined water samples and 72.09% of unconfined water samples, but the PIG distribution map showed that the water in the south central part of the study area had low to moderate pollution. According to the computed values of SAR, %Na, RSC, PI, KR, and MR and the results of a salinity diagram, the results further indicated that most of the studied samples were appropriate for irrigation usage. Only the CR values rendered 41.86% of the unconfined samples and 20% of the confined samples unfit for irrigation. Hence, proper measures are needed to resolve the corrosivity problem. Factor analysis resulted in the extraction of 3 factors that explained 81% of the data variability, and the extracted factors pointed towards geogenic factors governing the groundwater quality.

Abstract:Investigations were undertaken at the Xutuan and Renlou coal mines in Huaibei coalfield, Anhui Province, China to determine the effects of mining on the geochemical evolution of groundwater in the area. A total of 77 samples were collected between 1999 and 2017 from Neogene, Permian, and Carboniferous aquifers in two coal mines for hydrogeochemical analysis. The variation of hydrochemical types and the difference of Cl− and TDS suggest that the groundwater in the Neogene aquifer flow from the Xutuan coal mine to the Renlou coal mine. The high concentrations of chloride in groundwater in the Permian aquifer may be associated with recharge from the Neogene aquifer under the effects of mining. Principal component analysis and the results of chemical analysis of water samples were used to explore the water–rock processes in the three aquifers. The results suggest that the main controlling process of the Xutuan coal mine is ion exchange between Na+ and Ca2+, while the principal chemical processes in the Renlou coal mine are likely to be ion exchange and reverse ion exchange between Na+ and Ca2+. Mining will lead to the decline of the Neogene aquifer potentiometric heads and the compaction of aquifer sediments. This, in turn, could lead to the development of fissures caused by mining which could increase the hydraulic connection between the Neogene and the Permian aquifer, and increase the ion-exchange intensity of the Permian aquifer. The inverse geochemical modeling results of groundwater flow-paths in the Neogene and Carboniferous aquifers suggest that reverse ion-exchange process is taking place in these aquifers, which provides additional evidence for geochemical evolution. This combined method of using various lines of evidences from hydrogeology, multivariate statistical analysis, hydrogeochemical research, and geochemical models can explain the hydrogeochemical evolution processes of groundwater at a deeper level.

Abstract:This study assessed the geochemistry and quality of groundwater in the Hongdunzi coal mining area in northwest China and investigated the mechanisms governing its hydrogeochemistry and the hydraulic connectivity between adjacent aquifers. Thirty-four groundwater samples were collected for physicochemical analyses and bivariate analyses were used to investigate groundwater quality evolution. The groundwater in the mine was determined to be neutral to slightly alkaline, with high levels of salinity and hardness; most samples were of SO4·Cl–Na type. Fluoride and nitrate pollution in the confined aquifers were identified, primarily sourced from coals. Natural geochemical processes, such as mineral dissolution, cation exchange, and groundwater evaporation, largely control groundwater chemistry. Anthropogenic inputs from agricultural and mining activities were also identified in both shallow unconfined aquifers and the deeper confined aquifers, respectively. It was determined that the middle confined aquifer has a high hydraulic connectivity with the lower coal-bearing aquifer due to developed fractures. Careful management of the overlying aquifers is required to avoid mine water inrush geohazards and groundwater quality deterioration. The groundwater in the mining area is generally of poor quality, and is unsuitable for direct human consumption or irrigation. Na+, SO42−, Cl−, F−, TH, TDS, NO3−, and CODMn are the major factors responsible for the poor quality of the phreatic water, while Na+, SO42−, F−, and TDS are the major constituents affecting the confined groundwater quality. This study is beneficial for understanding the impacts of coal mine development on groundwater quality, and safeguarding sustainable mining in arid areas.

Abstract:A new monoclonal antibody NKH-1 was developed using human subepidermal basement membrane zone substances as immunogen. NKH-1, IgG1 kappa light chain, labeled proteins in the subbasement membrane zone in a linear fashion. It also labeled oxytalan fibers and elaunin fibers in the papillary dermis. Mature elastic fibers were labeled only in their peripheral microfibrils (elastofibrils) and the center core of elastin was nonreactive. Basal lamina itself was not decorated with NKH-1 even at the immunoelectron microscopic level. Skin appendages such as eccrine and apocrine glands, arrector pili muscle, hair follicle, and sebaceous gland were surrounded with NKH-1-positive substances. This substance was in linear fashion closely associated with the basal lamina but deposited linearly outside of it. Species specificity tests were performed only in nonprimates: mouse and guinea pig skins were nonreactive with NKH-1. NKH-1 seems to recognize a new substance in the subbasal lamina region (subbasal lamina proteins) which crossreact with elastic fiber microfibrils.

Abstract:Groundwater is an essential freshwater resource utilized in industry, agriculture, and daily life. In the Huaibei Plain (HBP), where groundwater significantly influences socio-economic development, information about its quality, hydrochemistry, and related health risks remains limited. We conducted a comprehensive groundwater sampling in the HBP and examined its rock characteristics, water quality index (WQI), and potential health risks. The results revealed that the primary factors shaping groundwater hydrochemistry were rock dissolution and weathering, cation exchange, and anthropogenic activities. WQI assessment indicated that only 73% of the groundwaters is potable, as Fe2+, Mn2+, NO3-, and F- contents in the water could pose non-carcinogenic hazards to humans. Children were more susceptible to these health risks through oral ingestion than adults. Uncertainty analysis indicated that the probabilities of non-carcinogenic risk were approximately 57% and 31% for children and adults, respectively. Sensitivity analysis further identified fluoride as the primary factor influencing non-carcinogenic risks, indicating that reducing fluoride contamination should be prioritized in future groundwater management in the HBP.

Abstract:Mine water plays an essential role in securing mine production and domestic consumption in arid mining areas. This study was conducted to analyse the hydrogeochemical characteristics, determine the hydrochemical processes and assess the quality of mine water in the Tangjiahui mining area in Jungar Coalfield, Inner Mongolia, China, by using the Piper trilinear diagram, Gibbs map and statistical methods. The results showed that the pH and EC of the mine water in the study area ranged from 7.10 to 7.90 and from 1684.70 to 3435.60 μS/cm, respectively. The TH and TDS were in the range of 219.52–390.6 mg/L and 926.61 to 1889.56 mg/L, respectively. The cation content in the mine water was ranked from the highest to the lowest as Na+ > Ca2+ > Mg2+, while the anion content was ranked as Cl− > HCO3− > SO42−. The hydrochemical type of the mine water was Cl–Na. The main mechanisms controlling the major chemistry of the mine water were the dissolution of halite and gypsum, and reverse cation exchange. Due to its high concentration of major ions, TDS, EC, SAR, and Na%, the mine water in the study area was not suitable for human consumption and agricultural irrigation. These results are beneficial for the sustainable reuse and management of mine water resources in the mining area, and will also provide references for similar studies in other regions of the world.

Abstract:To understand the hydrochemical characteristics and circulation pattern of groundwater in coastal coal mining areas, we analyzed 81 water samples from different water bodies in the Liangjia coal mine (LCM) area using multivariate statistical analysis and hydrochemical methods. The Quaternary groundwater (QW), accumulated water (AW) in the subsidence area, and mine water (MW) in the LCM all exhibit weakly alkaline to slightly saline water chemistry. The dominant cations and anions in the water are sodium (Na+) and chloride (Cl−), reflecting the influence of seawater intrusion. Some ions in QW, AW, and MW exhibited significant annual variations, but Na+ and Cl− concentrations increased with time. The water samples were divided into four categories through cluster analysis: C1 and C2 (bedrock water samples), C3 (water samples prominently affected by seawater intrusion), and C4 (QW and AW in the surface subsidence area). According to the Piper diagram, QW and AW in the surface subsidence area mainly correspond to the Na−Cl type, whereas the MW mainly consists of Na−Cl and Na−HCO3 types. Factor analysis revealed four main factors: seawater recharge, HCO3-rich bedrock water, alkaline water, and Quaternary groundwater (QW) with eigenvalues of 4.18, 2.44, 1.22, and 1.19 respectively, which explained 81.98% of the original data information. The comprehensive results of hydrochemical analysis and mathematical statistics indicated that the recharge sources of MW in LCM include seawater, QW, AW, HCO3-rich bedrock water, and mixed water. Based on regional hydrogeological conditions, a preliminary groundwater circulation model of the coastal coal mining area was constructed. Groundwater generally flows into the Bohai Sea from southeast to northwest, and coal mining has changed the original local groundwater runoff patterns and intensified seawater intrusion.

Abstract:The Taiyuan formation limestone water in the Huaibei coalfield is not only the water source for coal mining, but also the water source for industry and agriculture in mining areas. Its hydrogeochemical characteristics and water quality are generally concerning. In this paper, conventional ion tests were carried out on the Taiyuan formation limestone water of 16 coal mines in the Sunan and Linhuan mining areas of the Huaibei coalfield. Piper trigram, Gibbs diagram and an ion scale coefficient map were used to analyze the hydrogeochemical characteristics of the Taiyuan formation limestone water. The water quality was evaluated in a fuzzy comprehensive manner. The results show that the main cation and anion contents in the Taiyuan formation limestone water were Na+ > Mg2+ > Ca2+ > K+, SO42- > HCO3- > Cl-. There were differences in the hydrogeochemical types of the Taiyuan formation limestone water in the two mining areas; HCO3-Na type water was dominant in the Sunan mining area and SO4·Cl-Na type water was dominant in the Linhuan mining area. The chemical composition of the Taiyuan formation limestone water is mainly affected by the weathering of the rock and is related to the dissolution of the evaporated salt and the weathering of the silicate. The fuzzy comprehensive evaluation results show that the V-type water accounts for a large proportion of the Taiyuan formation limestone water in the study area and the water quality is poor. This study provides a basis for the development and utilization of the Taiyuan formation limestone water and water environmental protection in the future.

Abstract:To study the influence of coal mining on the hydrogeochemical process of groundwater, taking Guqiao Coal Mine, Huainan coalfield as an example, 32 groundwater and 4 surface water samples, 4 mine drainage samples and atmospheric precipitation were collected in the mine, and the hydrochemical type, TDS, and TH were analyzed using Piper diagram, principal component analysis, and chemical analysis of water samples. The relationship between Cenozoic and Permian aquifers was discussed and the potential mineral phases in groundwater were determined by Phreeqc software. The results show that hydrogeochemical processes of aquifers in the study area are mainly the dissolution of halite and cation exchange and desulfurization of in the Permian sandstone fracture. Inverse modeling was used to verify hydrogeochemical responses in diverse paths. Consequently, shallow groundwater and surface water are connected, and the two main kinds of water have relatively independent hydrogeochemistry. This suggests that the sealing properties of the hydrogeological in the coal field are good. These data analysis methods and results could be useful for the interpretation of groundwater evolution and the management of groundwater disaster in areas of long-term mining.

Abstract:The east foothill of the Taihang Mountains, Hebei Province, is an important groundwater recharge and transport area in the North China Plain. It is of practical significance to study the groundwater hydrochemical characteristics of this area for rational groundwater regulation. In this study, the Chadha rectangular diagram and Piper trilinear diagram were adopted to identify the relevant hydrochemical processes, and the main groundwater hydrochemical type was the HCO3·SO4–Ca. Descriptive statistical methods, correlation analysis, major ion ratio determination and principal component analysis (PCA) were employed to analyze the formation mechanism of groundwater hydrogeochemical characteristics and to identify the sources of the main groundwater ions in the study area. The results showed that Ca2+ and HCO3− were the dominant groundwater cation and anion, respectively, and the Gibbs diagram demonstrated that the majority of groundwater samples occurred in the rock weathering-dominated area. Bivariate diagrams revealed that mineral dissolution and ion exchange controlled the groundwater geochemistry. The study area was seriously polluted by NO3–, which might be due to the application of farmland fertilizers and leakage of rural domestic sewage and garbage. PCA yielded three principal components (PCs), which represented processes influenced by salinity, human activity and fluoride impacts on the groundwater chemistry. The distribution of high-positive PC scores verified the influences of the various processes on the groundwater study area, which is an effective tool to formulate and implement management strategies for the sustainable development of groundwater areas.

Abstract:Explore the hydrochemical characteristics of surface water (SW) and groundwater (GW) under coal mining activities and controlling factors is essential to ensure water security. This research concentrates on the Changhe River Basin (CRB). Water samples were collected from 27 sites within the CRB in May, July and December 2022. A qualitative analysis of hydrochemical characteristics and major ion sources was conducted based on Piper plots, Gibbs plots, Pearson correlation analysis and ion ratio methods. The PCA ~ RSR model was used to assess the current status of SW and GW quality in the CRB. We found that the hydrochemical type of SW and GW is HCO 3 –Ca, with HCO 3 − accounting for 62.2% ~ 87.9% of the total anions and Ca 2+ accounting for 27.4% ~ 31.3% of the total cations. Rock weathering is the main factor affecting the hydrochemical of CRB. SW is affected by the weathering and dissolution of both silicate and carbonate rocks, while GW is mainly affected by the weathering and dissolution of silicate. The cation exchange also has influence on GW. The cations in the water are mainly derived from rock weathering dissolution and exchange reactions, while SO 4 2− in anions is mainly imported from outside. The results of the water quality assessment showed that water quality in the midstream of the study area is poor and coal mining has seriously affected water safety issues. The study reveals the impact of coal mining on hydrochemical. It provides a scientific basis for the protection and management of water resources under coal mining activities in arid and semi-arid regions.

Chemical characteristics of shallow groundwater and suitability evaluation

Abstract:In order to find out the hydrochemical characteristics and water quality of shallow groundwater in Guyuan, 52 groups of groundwater samples were selected for hydrochemical composition analysis. Using Piper trilinear diagram, the hydrochemical types of groundwater in the study area were determined. On this basis, different evaluation methods were used to evaluate the current situation of water quality in the study area.The results show that the mainly chemical types of shallow groundwater in this area is HCO 3 -Ca. The results of comprehensive evaluation of groundwater quality show that the chemical composition of 18 groups groundwater are higher in the study area, which is suitable for agricultural and some industrial water, and can be used as drinking water after proper treatment. The chemical components of 16 groups groundwater are high, and the quality of groundwater is evaluated as ⅴ water, which is not suitable for drinking water. In order to improve the utilization efficiency of water resources, the suitability of irrigation water is evaluated. The water quality of 16 groups of shallow groundwater was evaluated as irrigation water. The evaluation result is that the water quality of DX-39 is poor.It is not suitable for irrigation. The research results can provide scientific basis for the rational development and utilization of shallow groundwater resources in this area. This is great significance to ensure the safety of local crops in irrigation.

Abstract:Groundwater is an important resource of water in arid and semi-arid agricultural regions. Thus, identification of hydrogeochemical characters and the influence of geospatial variability and flow pooling are of significance on groundwater resources management and making irrigation decisions in salinized areas. The study specifically focused on the Hetao Irrigation District located in the semi-arid region of northern China. A total of 85 groundwater samples (42 from the upstream Shenwu Irrigation Area (SWIA), 43 from the downstream Wulate Irrigation Area (WLTIA)) were collected, and 15 water quality indexes were analyzed. Methods including mathematical statistics, Piper diagram, Gibbs model, forward succession model, and ionic rations were used to analyze the hydrochemical characteristics and evolution mechanisms, RSBC, PS, SAR, WQI were selected to evaluate water quality and irrigation suitability from the perspective of salt and alkali damage. Results showed that the groundwater of the study area is weakly alkaline, SWIA is mainly fresh water (47.62%), WLTIA is mainly brackish water (65.12%), and the hydrochemistry of the groundwater consists of Cl–Na type and Cl·SO–Ca·Mg. The solute content of downstream (WLTIA) is higher than that of upstream (SWIA), Na + and Cl − have obvious advantages in WLTIA, and they are the main contribution indicators of groundwater TDS in the study area. The groundwater is subjected to the ongoing influence of rock weathering, ions exchange, and evaporate crystallization Na + mainly originates from the dissolution of evaporate salt rock and silicate rock, and Ca 2+ from the dissolution of gypsum and carbonate. The order of contribution of different rocks is evaporation rock > silicate rock > carbonate rock. Based on the classifications of sodium absorption ratio (SAR), residual sodium bicarbonate (RSBC), and potential salinity (PS), most of the groundwater samples are unsuitable for irrigating, and the groundwater quality of the SWIA is better than that of the WLTIA.

Abstract:We examined the primary mechanisms controlling water quality evolution in the Carboniferous aquifer in the Yangzhuang coal mine (Huaibei coalfield). Q-mode factor analysis explained how the Na+ and SO42− concentrations gradually increase and the hydrochemical type transforms from Ca-HCO3 to Ca·Na-HCO3 and Ca·Na-HCO3·SO4 along the flow path. The high bicarbonate concentration appears to be due to dissolution of calcite and dolomite and an open carbonate system, while frequent water inrushes and the declining water level provide evidence for the relative closure of the Carboniferous limestone aquifer. Gypsum dissolution is the main SO42− source. Inverse geochemical modeling sufficiently explained the hydrogeochemical processes that control the water quality evolution. These findings should aid the interpretation of groundwater hydrochemical evolution and groundwater quality management in the study area and other north China coalfields.

Abstract:Both natural processes and anthropogenic activities have significant effects on groundwater evolution in coal mining regions. In this study, the primary controlling mechanism of the groundwater chemistry evolution for the Carboniferous groundwater in the Huaibei coalfield, North China was proposed based on the hydrogeochemical indicators combining with multiple isotope tracers. The diversity of hydrochemical types indicates the complexity of the hydrogeochemical environment in the groundwater, which is recharged by precipitation infiltration with minimal evaporation according to the distributions of δD and δ18O. Additionally, ion correlation analysis suggests that minerals dissolution and cation exchange between Na+ and Ca2+ are the dominant processes within that groundwater. The hydrochemical and δ13CDIC characteristics of the groundwater demonstrate that HCO3− is mainly controlled by the dissolution of carbonate minerals and soil CO2, and the proportion of the latter is believed to be dominated by the hydrogeologic conditions. Similarly, the values of SO42− and δ34SSO4 indicate that a small portion of SO42− in the groundwater in the northern part originates from the meteoric precipitation, while it is mainly derived from the dissolution of gypsum in the southern part. Furthermore, mining activities also alter the groundwater level and flow conditions through pumping and drainage, which enhances the interaction between groundwater and aquifer lithologies, thereby affects the hydrogeochemical processes. The findings of this work are of great significance for promoting the safe exploitation of deep coal resources and the sustainable utilization of groundwater in the Huaibei coalfield, as well as the most of other coalfields in North China.

Abstract:As a newcomer, the philosophical basis of systems biology seems intuitive and appealing, the underlying philosophy being that the whole of a living system cannot be completely understood by the study of its individual parts. Yet answers to the questions "What is systems biology?" and "What constitutes a systems biology approach in 2016?" are somewhat more elusive. This seems to be due largely to the diversity of disciplines involved and the varying emphasis placed on the computational modeling and experimental aspects of systems biology. As such, the education of systems biology would benefit from multidisciplinary collaboration with both instructors and students from a range of disciplines within the same course. This essay is the personal reflection of a graduate student trying to get an introductory overview of the field of systems biology and some thoughts about effective education of systems biology.

Abstract:Groundwater is a critical water source, and was investigated from a coastal plain of southern China to reveal its hydrochemical constrains on water supply from phreatic aquifers of humid regions. Groundwater is dominantly fresh but with a relatively large TDS variation of 59-5,800 mg/L. Groundwater chemical composition is complex and presents variable hydrochemical facies from HCO 3 -Ca to ClNa type. Nitrogen and trace elements in groundwater exceed the desirable drinking limits and may pose health risks to all populations through oral pathways. Nitrogen and Mn are the dominant health threats. Groundwater has a large variation of integrated water quality with the EWQI in the range of 11–1179, but is predominantly (84.78%) excellent to medium quality and suitable for domestic usages. The piedmonts are the ideal areas for groundwater exploitation as groundwater presenting good to poor quality trend from the piedmont downstream-wards. Groundwater hydrochemistry is naturally governed by rock-water interactions, and sporadically regulated by evaporation. Agricultural practices and sporadic municipal sewages input nitrogen and major chemicals into groundwater and result in salinity and quality deterioration. Groundwater exceeding F, I, Fe and Mn are derived from geogenic sources. Both anthropogenic and geogenic toxic substances should be concerned in long-terms groundwater supply
