Abstract:The far-infrared (400 to 50 cm−1) spectrum of gaseous cyclopropylcarbonyl fluoride, c-C3H5CFO, was recorded at 0.1 cm−1 resolution. The fundamental asymmetric torsion for the most stable conformer, which has the carbonyl group oriented cis to the ring, is observed at 83.51 cm−1 with five torsionally excited-state transitions proceeding to lower frequencies. For the high energy trans conformer the fundamental asymmetric torsional mode was assigned to a series of C-type Q branches in the region of 94 to 85 cm−1. From these data the potential function for internal rotation of the asymmetric top was determined and the potential coefficients are: V1 =459±10, V2=2131±47, V3 = −320±18, V4 = 16 ± 15 cm−1 and V5 = 57±9. The cis to trans and trans to cis barriers were determined to be 2307 ± 28 and 2111 ± 26 cm−1, respectively, with an enthalpy difference between the conformers of 196 ± 75 cm−1 (560 ± 214 cal mol−1). The conformational stability, barriers to internal rotation, and fundamental vibrational frequencies are compared with those obtained from ab initio Hartree-Fock gradient calculations at the 3-21G and 6-31G* basis set levels. The structural parameters were determined for c-C3H5CFO from the ab initio values, with adjustments, and the microwave data. The results obtained are compared with the corresponding results for some similar molecules.

Abstract:The recent astronomical observations of the simplest aromatic nitrile benzonitrile, c-C6H5CN, fol- lowed by a five-membered and a bicyclic CN-functionalized ring in TMC-1 have provided a significant impetus to the field for searches of cyclic complex organic molecules in space. One such example is 2,4,6-cycloheptatriene-1-carbonitrile, a seven-membered ring with a -CN group attached to the sp3-hybridized carbon atom. With a permanent electric dipole moment of 4.3 D, this molecule is an excellent candidate for laboratory rotational spectroscopy. In this study, experiments were performed in the 2-8 GHz, 18-26 GHz and 75-110 GHz frequency ranges in a supersonic expansion setup and a room temperature flow cell setup. The measurements across the broad frequency range of 2-110 GHz have enabled the identification and assignment of the vibronic ground state, singly substituted rare- atom isotopologues, and vibrationally excited states. Here, we report the precise determination of the rotational constants, quartic centrifugal distortion constants, nitrogen nuclear quadrupole coupling constants, as well as molecular structure in its vibronic ground state. The comprehensive rotational spectroscopy study of this molecule, covering a large frequency range, forms the basis for its future astronomical detection and thus for extending the pool of detected complex cyclic molecules.

An analysis of the rotational ground state and lowest-energy vibrationally excited dyad of 3-cyanopyridine: Low symmetry reveals rich complexity of perturbations, couplings, and interstate transitions

Abstract:The rotational spectrum of 3-cyanopyridine from 130 – 360 GHz was recorded, and an analysis of the ground state and two lowest-energy excited vibrational states was completed. Almost 6700 new transitions were measured for the ground state and fit to a partial octic, distorted-rotor Hamiltonian with low error (σfit < 0.05 MHz). The first two excited vibrational states, ν30 and ν21, are an isolated dyad that exhibit both a- and b-type Coriolis perturbations and require a two-state, least-squares fit to fully predict the rotational spectrum and determine accurate spectroscopic constants. Quartic and sextic distortion coefficients were determined for the dyad, along with seven symmetry-allowed perturbation terms: Ga,GaJ,Fbc,FbcK,Gb,GbJ,and GbK. Numerous resonances including those following a-type selection rules, ΔKa = 2 or ΔKa = 4, and b-type selection rules, ΔKa = 3 or ΔKa = 5, were observed and fit. For ν30 and ν21, the energy difference (ΔE30,21 = 15.7524693 (37) cm−1), both Coriolis coupling coefficients (ζ30,21a= 0.8327 (9) and ζ30,21b = −0.0181 (3)), and the vibration-rotation interaction constants were determined experimentally and compared to computed theoretical values. Combined with the work on the isolated vibrationally excited dyads of 4-cyanopyridine, phenyl isocyanide, benzonitrile, and phenylacetylene, the coupling in ν30 and ν21 provides an opportunity to compare the Coriolis interactions of these analogous mono-substituted aromatic molecules in unusual detail. Additionally, this work improves the ground-state rotational constants and centrifugal distortion constants of 3-cyanopyridine and provides the fundamental constants needed to support an astronomical search for 3-cyanopyridine in the interstellar medium.

Abstract:The high-resolution infrared spectrum of the fundamental band ν12 (ring breathing) of the chiral molecule propylene oxide (CH 3 CHCH 2 O) was recorded at room temperature and under jet-cooled conditions using a quantum cascade laser at 8 μm. The observed lines with quantum numbers J ≤55 and K a ≤ 21 were assigned to strong b - and c -type bands, and some low J transitions were classified as weak a -type transitions. The lines were fitted using a Watson's A-reduced Hamiltonian in the I r representation. From the rovibrational analysis the band origin as well as the rotational constants and four quartic centrifugal distortion constants were derived.

The High-Resolution Far- to Near-Infrared Anharmonic Absorption Spectra of Cyano-Substituted Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons from 300-6200 cm$^{-1}$

Abstract:Cyano-substituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (CN-PAHs) may contribute to the emission detected in the 7 - 9 $\mu$m (1430 - 1100 cm$^{-1}$) and 11 - 15 $\mu$m (900 - 670 cm$^{-1}$) regions of astronomical IR spectra. Anharmonic quantum chemical computations of 17 CN-PAH isomers for 4 small PAHs and Benzene reveal strong, broad absorption features across the entire 300 - 6200 cm$^{-1}$ (33 - 1.6 $\mu$m) frequency range. In particular, when a FWHM of 15 cm$^{-1}$ is applied, the composite CN-PAH spectrum is almost indistinguishable from the unsubstituted-PAH spectrum. At high resolution, however, the infrared absorption spectra reveal unique, identifiable features of CN-PAHs in the 700 - 950, 1100 - 1300, 2000 - 2500, and 3400 - 3600 cm$^{-1}$ ranges. The in-plane and out-of-plane CH bending vibrational frequencies of CN-PAHs are shifted when comparing isomers and to their unsubstituted counterparts, making their differentiation in mixed laboratory experiments possible. The overall aromatic CH stretch fundamental (2950 - 3200 cm$^{-1}$) and first overtone (5950 - 6200 cm$^{-1}$) regions are relatively unaffected by the cyano-substitution, with changes only to the breadth and intensity of the bands. Detailed spectroscopic data on the normal mode components of each state reported herein provide the means to directly assign future laboratory spectra and to guide direct IR observations of astronomical regions with, e.g., JWST.

Abstract:We report the rotationally resolved spectrum of a single polyatomic molecular ion in the gas phase. Building upon the recently developed inelastic recoil spectroscopy (IRS) technique, we have achieved a spectral resolution sufficient to observe resolved rotational-vibrational transitions of a trapped cyclopropenyl cation, c-C3H3+. The high precision of IRS shown in this work presents an attractive platform for astrochemistry, single molecule chiral detection, and tests of fundamental physics.

Abstract:The room-temperature far-infrared spectrum of 13C-labelled formic acid has been recorded at a resolution of 0.00096 cm−1. We assigned 1328 lines from 49 to 142 cm−1 to rotational transitions with quantum numbers that significantly extend the range beyond which was previously reported. We included these new lines in an analysis that involved fitting an extensive set of ground state molecular constants to line positions reported here and elsewhere. These constants allow for the accurate prediction of pure rotational line positions of H13COOH at temperatures that are relevant to Earth's atmosphere and various interstellar sources.

Abstract:The Raman spectra (3200–50 cm−1) of gaseous, liquid, and solid 2-chloropropane-d3 (isopropyl-d3 chloride), CH3(CD3)CHCl, and the infrared spectra (3200–50 cm−1) of the gas and solid have been recorded. The torsional transitions observed in the far infrared spectrum of the gaseous sample recorded at a resolution of 0.10 cm−1 between 265 and 135 cm−1 were analyzed in terms of the semirigid rotor model. An effective barrier of 1378 ± 4 cm−1 (3.94 ± 0.01 kcal/mol), cosine–cosine coupling term of 166 ± 10 cm−1 (0.47 ± 0.03 kcal/mol), and sine–sine coupling term of −173 ± 1 cm−1 (−0.49 ± 0.01 kcal/mol) were determined by fitting ten observed frequencies arising from the CH3 and CD3 torsions. The assignment of the 27 fundamentals is given and discussed. A complete equilibrium geometry, barrier to internal rotation, and vibrational frequencies have been determined by ab initio Hartree–Fock gradient calculations employing either 3-21G* or 6-31G* basis sets for both the d0 and d3 species. These calculated results are compared to the experimental values as well as to the corresponding quantities for some similar molecules. Abstract:A detailed analysis of (sub-)millimeter-wave spectra of the vibrational ground state ($\upsilon=0$) combined with the energetically lowest excited vibrational state ($\upsilon_{24}=1$; aldehyde torsion) of gauche-propanal (g-C$_2$H$_5$CHO) up to 500 GHz is presented. Both vibrational states, $\upsilon=0$ and $\upsilon_{24}=1$, are treated with tunneling rotation interactions between their two respective tunneling states, which originate from two stable degenerate gauche-conformers; left- and right-handed configurations separated by a small potential barrier. Thanks to double-modulation double-resonance (DM-DR) measurements, important but weak $c$-type transitions connecting the tunneling states could be unambiguously assigned. In addition, Coriolis interaction as well as Fermi resonance between the two vibrational states needed to be taken into account to derive fits with experimental accuracy using Pickett's SPFIT program in a reduced axis system (RAS). Based on the rotational analysis, the fundamental vibrational frequency $\nu_{24}$ of gauche-propanal is redetermined to 68.75037(30) cm$^{-1}$.

Abstract:The asymmetric torsional potential function, conformational energy difference, vibrational frequencies, and structural parameters of Cyclopropane-carboxaldehyde have been obtained from ab initio calculations at the 3–21G and/or 6-31G* baiss set levels. These results have allowed for a reinterpretation or clarification of some of the corresponding results obtained from experiment. The conformations that have the oxygen atom oriented cis and trans to the three-membered ring are observed and calculated to be the most stable and high energy forms in the gaseous phase, respectively. From the ab initio calculations using the 6–31 G* basis set, the energy difference between the two conformers is 114 cm-1. For the liquid, the trans conformer is more stable and is the only rotamer present in the annealed solid. Based on a combination of results obtained from ab initio calculations, microwave spectroscopy, and the electron diffraction technique,ro structural parameters have been obtained for both conformations.
Deciphering the Rotational Spectrum of the First Excited Torsional State of Propylene Oxide

Abstract:The first excited torsional state of the chiral molecule propylene oxide, $\mathrm{CH_{3}C_{2}H_{3}O}$, is investigated from millimeter up to sub-millimeter wavelengths (75-950 GHz). The first excited vibrational mode of propylene oxide, $\upsilon_{24}$, is analysed using the programs ERHAM and XIAM. Rotational constants and tunneling parameters are provided, and a description of the A-E splittings due to internal rotation is given. Furthermore, the potential barrier height to internal rotation $V_{3}$ is determined to be $V_{3} = 894.5079(259) \mathrm{cm^{-1}}$ . Our results are compared with quantum chemical calculations and literature values. We present a line list of the dense spectrum of the first excited torsional state of propylene oxide in the (sub-)millimeter range. Our results will be useful for further studies of chiral molecules in vibrationally excited states, and will enable astronomers to search for rotational transitions originating from $\upsilon_{24}$ of propylene oxide in interstellar space.

When Phenyl and Cyclopropyl Rings Meet: Spectroscopic Shifts and Conformational Questions

Abstract:The electronic and vibrational spectra of cyclopropylbenzene (CPB) and 1,3-bromocyclopropylbenzene (BrCPB) in the gas phase were investigated using quantum chemical calculations in combination with resonance-enhanced multi-photon ionization REMPI techniques including 1c-R2PI, UV-UV holeburning, and IR-UV ion depletion in the CH stretch region. The electronic spectra revealed the presence of a single conformer for both species, with the absence of any perpendicular conformer attributed to low computed barriers to conformer interconversion. Assignment of CPB to the bisected conformer was made through interpreting distinctive CH stretch bands in the IR-UV spectrum in conjunction with quantum chemical calculations. A local anharmonic model based on DFT calculations was adapted to reproduce the cyclopropyl CH stretch spectrum successfully. It was not feasible to definitively assign which bisected conformer of BrCPB was observed using vibrational information alone due to the close similarity of their predicted IR spectra. However, conformational sensitivity of the S1 ← S0 transition dipole moment (TDM) alignments leads to simulated rotational contours that display stark differences, which prompted assignment to the "B1" bisecting conformer with the cyclopropyl ring directed away from the bromine atom. The absence of the energetically comparable "B2" conformer is unexpected. The analysis of the convolution of aromatic and aliphatic modes serves as a basis for assignment in constrained aliphatic systems.
Millimeter-Wave and High-Resolution Infrared Spectroscopy of 3-Furonitrile

Abstract:The rotational spectrum of 3-furonitrile has been collected from 85 to 500 GHz, spanning the most intense rotational transitions observable at room temperature. The large dipole moment imparted by the nitrile substituent confers substantial intensity to the rotational spectrum, enabling the observation of over 5600 new rotational transitions. Combined with previously published transitions, the available data set was least-squares fit to partial-octic, distorted-rotor A- and S-reduced Hamiltonian models with low statistical uncertainty (σfit < 0.031 MHz) for the ground vibrational state. Similar to its isomer 2-furonitrile, the two lowest-energy vibrationally excited states of 3-furonitrile (ν17, ν24), which correspond to the in-plane and out-of-plane nitrile bending vibrations, form an a- and b-axis Coriolis-coupled dyad. Rotationally resolved infrared transitions (30-600 cm-1) and over 4200 pure rotational transitions for both ν17 and ν24 were fit to a partial-octic, Coriolis-coupled, two-state Hamiltonian with low statistical uncertainty (σfit rot < 0.045 MHz, σfit IR < 6.1 MHz). The least-squares fitting of these vibrationally excited states provides their accurate and precise vibrational frequencies (ν17 = 168.193 164 8 (67) cm-1 and ν24 = 169.635 831 5 (77) cm-1) and seven Coriolis-coupling terms (Ga, GaJ, GaK, Fbc, FbcK, Gb, and Fac). The two fundamental states exhibit a notably small energy gap (1.442 667 (10) cm-1) and an inversion of the relative energies of ν17 and ν24 compared to those of the isomer 2-furonitrile. The rotational frequencies and spectroscopic constants of 3-furonitrile that we present herein provide a sufficient basis for conducting radioastronomical searches for this molecule across the majority of the frequency range available to current radiotelescopes.

Abstract:The CF3 group in the −CH2CF3 appendage reports on E/Z‐isomerization in carbamates. The CN rotational barrier of N‐(4‐hydroxybutyl)‐N‐(2,2,2‐trifluoroethyl) tert‐butyl carbamate was quantified with Eyring‐Polanyi theory via variable temperature 13C and 19F NMR spectroscopy in conjunction with innovative Lorentzian line shape analysis informed by data covering the entire temperature range. The rotational barrier about the CN carbamate bond of N‐(4‐hydroxybutyl)‐N‐(2,2,2‐trifluoroethyl) tert‐butyl carbamate 1 was determined by variable temperature (VT) 13C and 19F NMR spectroscopy. The −CH2CF3 appendage reports on rotational isomerism and allows for the observation of separate signals for the E‐ and Z‐ensembles at low temperature. The activation barrier for E/Z‐isomerization was quantified using Eyring‐Polanyi theory which requires the measurements of the maximum difference in Larmor frequency Δνmax and the convergence temperature Tc. Both Δνmax and Tc were interpolated by analyzing sigmoidal functions fitted to data describing signal separation and the quality of the superposition of the E‐ and Z‐signals, respectively. Methods for generating the quality‐of‐fit parameters for Lorentzian line shape analysis are discussed. Our best experimental value for the rotational barrier ΔGc≠(1)=15.65±0.13 kcal/mol is compared to results of a higher level ab initio study of the model N‐ethyl‐N‐(2,2,2‐trifluoroethyl) methyl carbamate.

Modulations of νO-H and νC═O Stretching Frequencies of Difluoroacetic Acid with Internal Rotation of CHF2 Rotor: A Combined Vapor Phase and Matrix Isolation Infrared Spectroscopy Study

Abstract:Mid-infrared spectra of difluoroacetic acid (DFAA) have been measured by isolating the molecule in argon and nitrogen matrices at 8 K and also in the vapor phase at room temperature. In argon matrix, the O-H stretching fundamental (νO-H) of -COOH group appears as a doublet with band maxima at 3554 and 3558 cm-1, and a similar doublet for C═O stretching fundamental appears at 1800 and 1810 cm-1. In the vapor phase, the νO-H transition is featured with multiple peaks, and the observed band shape has been deconvoluted as superposition of two transitions both having A-type rotational band contours. We have attributed these transitions to the two internal rotational isomers corresponding to the two distinct minima along -CHF2 torsional coordinate of the molecule. Natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis reveals that these torsional minima are the manifestations of different second order interactions involving bonding and antibonding orbitals corresponding to the rotor -CHF2 and COOH groups of the molecule. By use of the theoretically predicted rotational constants of the rotamers, the band profile for νO-H has been simulated satisfactorily by means of the PGOPHER method, and this has allowed estimating accurately the energy difference between the two rotamers as 0.54 kcal/mol. The predicted energy barrier for interconversion between the rotamers is very small, ∼0.5 kcal/mol from rotamer II to rotamer I, which implies that the molecule could hop almost freely between the two rotameric forms at room temperature. As a result, the frequencies of the key stretching vibrational modes, like νO-H, νC═O, and νC-H, undergo modulation with internal rotation of the rotor -CHF2 group. Such modulation of high frequency modes could be an efficient mechanism for acceleration of rotor-induced IVR (intramolecular vibrational redistribution) well documented in the literature. Furthermore, the spectra measured in matrix isolated environment show signatures for an energetically higher third rotamer, where -OH and -C═O groups are in anti orientation. It has also been shown that DFAA can easily form weak hydrogen bonded dimeric complexes with molecular nitrogen (N2), which causes νO-H to undergo a red shift of ∼30 cm-1 in argon matrix for all three DFAA monomers.

Abstract:Electronic structures and spectroscopic properties of cyclopropane in ground and excited states were studied by the density functional theory. Cyclopropane in ground state showed a geometric structure of D3h, while for the first excited states, the symmetry of optimum structure was C2v that exhibited an elongated C–C bond and two shortened ones. Several split vibrational spectroscopic terms for the excited states were predicated on the basis of a comparison with those for ground states of lower symmetry. The extremely small CH2 stretch frequency was closely related to the long C–C bond for the first excited states. The first optical absorption band of cyclopropane was indicated to be associated with the excitations from HOMO 3e′ orbitals to 4a1′ and 4e′ orbitals. The strong absorption bands were calculated as arising from the valence-shell transitions.

Abstract:The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) opened a new era for the identification of molecular systems in the interstellar medium (ISM) by vibrational features. One group of molecules of increasing interest is cyano-derivatives of aromatic organic molecules, which have already been identified in the ISM on the basis of the analysis of rotational signatures, and so, are plausible candidates for the detection by the JWST. Benzonitrile considered in this work represents a suitable example for the validation of a computational strategy, which can be further applied for different, larger, and not-yet observed molecules. For this purpose, anharmonic simulations of infrared (IR) spectra have been compared with recent FTIR experimental studies. The anharmonic computations using the generalized second-order vibrational perturbation theory (GVPT2) in conjunction with a hybrid force field combining the harmonic part of revDSD-PBEP86-D3/jun-cc-pVTZ with anharmonic corrections from B3LYP-D3/SNSD show very good agreement with those in the experiment, with a mean error of 11 c m - 1 for all fundamental transitions overall and only 2 c m - 1 for the C ≡ N stretching fundamental at 4.49 μ m . The inclusion of overtones up to three-quanta transitions also allowed the prediction of spectra in the near-infrared region, which shows distinct features due to C ≡ N overtones at the 2.26 μ m and 1.52 μ m . The remarkable accuracy of the GVPT2 results opens a pathway for the reliable prediction of spectra for a broader range of cyano-astroCOMs.

Abstract:FT-ICR-MS, H-1-NMR, C-13-NMR, H-1-(HCOSY)-H-1, HMQC and HMBC were applied for the study of (4R-cis) -6-[2-[2-(4-fluorophenyl) -5-(methylethyl) -3-phenyl-4-(phenylamino)-H-1-pyrrole-1-yl]-ethyl] -2, 2-dimethyl -1 3-dioxacyclohexyl-4-acetic acid terbutyl ester, and related spectra were interpreted. The conformation of hexatomic ring in the molecular structure was confirmed. The steric effects on the chemical shifts of some atoms (C or H) in the molecular were primarily studied.

Abstract:Carbon-hydrogen (C-H) vibration modes serve as key probes in the chemical identification of hydrocarbons and in vibrational sum-frequency generation spectroscopy of hydrocarbons at the liquid/gas interface. Their assignments pose a challenge from a theoretical viewpoint. In this work, we present a detailed study of the C-H stretching region of dimethyl sulfoxide using a new ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) module that we have implemented in NWChem. Through a combination of AIMD simulations and static normal mode analysis, we interpret experimental infrared and Raman spectra and explore the role of anharmonic effects in this system. Comprehensive anharmonic normal mode analysis of the C-H stretching region casts doubt upon previous experimental assignments of the shoulder on the symmetric C-H stretching peak. In addition, our AIMD simulations also show significant broadening of the in-phase symmetric C-H stretching resonance, which suggests that the experimentally observed shoulder is due to thermal broadening of the symmetric stretching resonance.

Abstract:Chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave (CP-FTMW) spectroscopy is a powerful tool for performing broadband gas-phase rotational spectroscopy, and its applications include discovery of new molecules, complex mixture analysis, and exploration of fundamental molecular physics. Here we report the development of a new K a band (26.5-40 GHz) CP-FTMW spectrometer that is equipped with a pulsed supersonic expansion source and a heated reservoir for low-volatility samples. The spectrometer is built around a 150 W traveling wave tube amplifier and has an instantaneous bandwidth that covers the entire K a band spectral range. To test the performance of the spectrometer, the rotational spectrum of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), a former gasoline additive and environmental pollutant, has been measured for the first time in this spectral range. Over 1000 spectroscopic transitions have been measured and assigned to the vibrational ground state and a newly-identified torsionally excited state; all transitions were fit using the XIAM program to a root-mean-square deviation of 22~kHz. The spectrum displays internal rotation splitting, nominally forbidden transitions, and an intriguing axis-switching effect between the ground and torsionally excited state that is a consequence of MTBE's extreme near-prolate nature. Finally, the sensitivity of the spectrometer enabled detection of all singly-substituted 13 C and 18 O isotopologues in natural abundance. This set of isotopic spectra allowed for a partial r 0 structure involving the heavy atoms to be derived, resolving a structural discrepancy in the literature between previous microwave and electron diffraction measurements.
