ANATOMICAL VARIABILITY OF THE ALVEOLAR PROCESS OF THE MAXILLA BASED ON MULTISLICE COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY DATA

Abstract:Modern research methods, widely implemented in routine medical practice, open new horizons for the study of anatomical structures. The maxilla is one of the regions of the human skull that shows significant variability with age and gender. This is due to the peculiarities of tooth eruption and age-related changes in the periodontium and adjacent structures, which undoubtedly affect the structure of the alveolar process, sometimes drastically altering it over time. The aim of our study was to determine the anatomical variability of the alveolar process of the maxilla based on multislice computed tomography data. Material and methods: The research was conducted based on the results of 400 spiral computed tomography scans of males and females aged 18 to 95 years with detection of the anatomical variability of the alveolar process. Results: The average height of the alveolar process was 14.3±0.99x10^-3 m. The thickness of the wall also showed considerable variability. It was maximal in the middle part and minimal in the lateral part of the wall, measuring 1.905±0.021x10^-3 m and 1.15±0.011x10^-3 m, respectively. Conclusions: We determined its thickness, density, and identified teeth whose roots are connected to the maxillary sinus. The thickness of the alveolar process correlates with the volume of the sinus, showing a strong negative correlation (r=-0.92). Thus, with larger sinus sizes, the alveolar process has a smaller thickness. According to calculations, there is a correlation between the upper facial index and the size of the alveolar process (r=0.64). In dolichocephalic individuals, the longitudinal size is greater than in brachycephalic individuals, where the transverse size of the alveolar process prevails.
Study of the relationship between facial anatomical marking points and occlusal vertical dimension

Abstract:Objective To explore the novel method to obtain the occlusal vertical dimension so as to find out the relationship between occlusal vertical dimension and marking points of facial hard and soft tissue.Methods The study sample consisted of 100 participants,who were older than 50 and had stable occlusal relation.We overlapped the X-ray lateral radiographs and digital lateral photos with Photoshop,measured vertical dimension,the lengths and angles among facial hard and soft tissue marking points,and analyzed the relationship between lengths and angles among facial anatomical marking points and occlusal vertical distances.Results The mean value of occlusal vertical dimension was(62.83 ± 6.11) mm,which was obviously related to age,but had no obvious relationship with gender.After the correlation test,we found that occlusal vertical dimension had strong correlations with several lengths among facial anatomical marking points,that they showed a certain linear relation,and that the mandibular plane angel was an important factor of the above mentioned correlation.Conclusions Facial anatomical marking points have certain referential value for obtaining occlusal vertical dimension clinically.

Abstract:The purpose of the study was to determine the relationship between the parameters of the facial and brain bones of the skull and the structures of the posterior cranial fossa. The most important area of medical craniology remains the complex study of the typical variability of skull structures and formations and the regularity of their interrelationships in general. These include the posterior fossa with its brain regions and vascular communications. The morphology of the posterior fossa was studied on 13 passport turtles of adults from the collection of the fundamental museum of the Department of Clinical Anatomy, Anatomy and Operative Surgery of the Dnipro State Medical University. To solve the problems, a complex of craniometric methods was used. Craniometric studies of the posterior cranial fossa, the base of the skull, were performed with a thick compass with a millimetre scale and a technical calliper with a fi ssion price of 0.01 mm, according to the standard craniology procedure. For statistical processing of data obtained as a result of craniometry the method of complex statistical analysis is applied, which includes modern methods of mathematical analysis: variation, correlation, factor and regression. Statistical analysis of the posterior fossa showed no signifi cant gender and age diff erences. The obtained data can be used both in theoretical medicine and in practical medicine, in particular in neurosurgery, to determine the volume of the posterior cranial fossa by the external size of the facial and cerebral regions of the skull. In our work, measurements were made of the skeletal structures of the posterior cranial fossa in the plane of the Frankfurt horizontal along the external dimensions of the facial and cerebral areas of the skull. The morphometric traits of «close» posterior cranial fossa (posterior cranial fossa) have been highlighted as increasing the ratio of the brain matter volume of the posterior cranial fossa to its bone volume. Craniometrically, the volume of the posterior cranial fossa has been determined to be between 110 and 218 cm3, averaging 158 cm3 with a statistical deviation of 19.14. The volume of the posterior cranial fossa in adults ranges from 140 to 230 cm3, with an average of 178 cm3. The posterior fossa volume of 178 cm3 is an indication of a «close» posterior cranial fossa. Studies of the correlation between the facial and posterior cranial lobes have shown that the posterior fossa correlates to varying degrees with individual facial size. As a result of research, V truncated cone, V ellipsoid and V cut of ball were determined. The V ellipsoid ranged from a minimum of 138,662 to a maximum of 225,688 cm3, V truncated cone from 111,562 to 169,455 cm3; the V cut of the ball from 83,694 to 192,06 cm3.

Abstract:Age and sex determination are crucial in the biological identification of the remaining skeleton, especially in forensic circumstances. This study's main important focus is to gauge the dimension such as distance, width, size, and structure of the cranial bone. It still becomes most laborious when the body has been reduced to a skeleton. Between men and women: In men, the height or width of the nasal bone is higher than in women. The cranial capacity is higher in females as compared to males. The main task of this examination was sex estimation through the geometric morphometric analysis of the frontal bone. Occurred distinction in structure and magnitude through the glabellar region. The parameters of different components are used to determine sex, i.e., nasal aperture, etc.; Multi-Detector Computed Tomography (MDCT) helps in sex determination. MDCT plays a vital role in identifying age, sex, and determination using scans of various cranial bone parts. Computed tomography provides good image acquisition, greater spatial resolution, and excellent accuracy. This study's focus on forensics is to estimate the measurements such as length, width, etc. Glabella separated the female and male skulls with reasonable accuracy. For sex determination, mastoid size, nasal height measurements, and various anthropometric methods are used. Some studies indicate a distinguished purpose that also helps to determine the sex from the remaining skeleton. The main motive of this study is to present sex using a piriform aperture from a fragmented skull. The mean value of nasal height, nasal width, and nasal index is higher in men than women. The growth nasal septum is monitored in paediatrics for one year because the paediatrics gradually develop nasal septum during one year. In forensic circumstances, there is only one anatomical structure to determine sex and ages better. The lower region of the face is more different than the upper section of the face. In the Gastrointestinal intestinal period, nose length rises from 3.3 mm to roughly 16 weeks. At different ages, nose parameter is identified using MRI and magnetic resonance imaging; nasal structure and size are constant or growing after 35-year man and women. Analysis of Craniofacial Remodeling in the Aging Midface Using Reconstructed Three-Dimensional Models in Paired Individuals

Abstract:Background: Aging leads to a panoply of changes of facial morphology. The present study was conducted to analyze modifications of the facial skeleton with aging, using high-resolution imaging and comparing the same individuals at two time points. Methods: The electronic medical record system was reviewed since its inception in 2001 for patients for whom two computed tomographic scans of the midface were obtained at least 9 years apart. The computed tomographic scans were converted into three-dimensional craniofacial models for each patient, using the initial and the follow-up computed tomographic scan data. The models were used to highlight areas of bone growth and bone resorption using a color scale and to perform a cephalometric analysis. Results: Seven patients with a mean age of 61 years and computed tomographic scans on average 10.3 years apart were included. Bone resorption was consistently present (100 percent) at the pyriform aperture and the anterior wall of the maxilla. Resorption was noted at the superocentral (71 percent), inferolateral (57 percent), and superomedial (57 percent) aspects of the orbital rim. Resorption occurred earlier at the inferolateral orbital rim followed by the superomedial orbital rim in later decades of life. Paired-analysis of change in the orbital rim height and width demonstrated a mean decrease over time but was not significant. Conclusion: Bone remodeling in the same individual, over a period of 10 years, was characterized by resorption at the pyriform aperture; anterior wall of the maxilla; and superocentral, superomedial, and inferolateral aspects of the orbital rims.

Abstract:Background The shape of the forehead is primarily determined by the frontal bone, which holds significance for health and aesthetics. This study evaluated the morphology of the frontal bone in different age groups and genders using computed tomography (CT). Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted on CT scan results of 220 patients divided into three age groups: 20–29.27, 29.27–47.54, and 47.54–95 years. The investigation explored the lower and upper angles compared with the Sella–Nasion (SN) line, the maximum frontal projection with Nasion in the SN plan, and the variations in frontal thickness across different angles (15, 30, 45, 60, 75, and 90 degrees) relative to the SN plane. All data were analyzed using R software, considering the significance level p < 0.05. Results Of 220 patients, 119 were men, and the mean age of the participants was 41.09 ± 18.06 years. The average upper frontal slope (UFS) angle was 56.96 ± 8.17 degrees, which was 59.35 ± 7.92 degrees in females and 54.94 ± 7.86 degrees in males. The mean lower frontal slope (LFS) angle was 86.30 ± 7.96 degrees, which was 90.71 ± 6.67 degrees in females and 82.55 ± 7.00 degrees in males. The average contour nasion (C–N) distance was 7.51 ± 3.72 mm. Also, the frontal thickness at an angle of 15 degrees had the highest value of 13.08 ± 2.68 mm and at 30 degrees had the lowest value of 5.81 ± 1.56 mm. A significant difference was observed between the UFS and LFS among males and females ( p < 0.001). Across all age groups, men exhibited a steeper angle, indicating a greater posterior inclination than women. Moreover, males with upper ages reported a significant increase in C–N distance and frontal projection ( p < 0.05). Conclusion Our findings emphasize the importance of considering gender-specific variations in frontal bone structure when planning cosmetic or reconstructive procedures involving the forehead. Global patterns of the cranial form of modern human populations described by analysis of a 3D surface homologous model

Abstract:This study assessed the regional diversity of the human cranial form by using geometric homologous models based on scanned data from 148 ethnic groups worldwide. This method adopted a template-fitting technique for a nonrigid transformation via the iterative closest point algorithm to generate the homologous meshes. Through the application of principal component analysis to 342 sampled homologous models, the largest variation was detected in overall size, and small South Asian crania were clearly verified. The next greatest diversity was found in the length/breadth proportion of the neurocranium, which showed the contrast between the elongated crania of Africans and the globular crania of Northeast Asians. Notably, this component was slightly correlated with the facial profile. Well-known facial features, such as the forward projection of the cheek among Northeast Asians and compaction of the European maxilla, were reconfirmed. These facial variations were highly correlated with the calvarial outline, particularly the degree of frontal and occipital inclines. An allometric pattern was detected in facial proportions in relation to overall cranial size; in larger crania, the facial profiles tend to be longer and narrower, as demonstrated among many American natives and Northeast Asians. Although our study did not include data on environmental variables that are likely to affect cranial morphology, such as climate or dietary conditions, the large datasets of homologous cranial models will be usefully available for seeking various attributions to phenotypic skeletal characteristics.
Midface Skeletal Sexual Dimorphism: Lessons Learned from Advanced Three-dimensional Imaging in the White Population

Abstract:Background: Facial shape is significantly influenced by the underlying facial bony skeleton. Sexual dimorphisms in these structures are crucial for craniofacial, aesthetic, and gender-affirming surgery. Previous studies have examined the orbits and upper face, but less is known about the midface. This study aimed to elucidate the sexual dimorphism in the midface region, focusing on the maxilla and zygomatic bones. Methods: A retrospective review was conducted using facial computed tomography scans from 101 White patients aged 20-79 years, using Materialise Mimics and 3-Matics for segmentation and 3D reconstruction. Measurements and statistical shape modeling of the midfacial skeleton were performed. Results: Our results show a distinct sexual dimorphism in the midfacial skeletal structure across all age groups. Women typically had a narrower bizygomatic width by 1.5 mm (P = 0.04), a shallower maxillary depth by 1.6 mm (P < 0.01), and a midfacial vertical height that was 4 mm shorter than that of men (P = 0.018). In contrast, men exhibited a greater distance between the frontozygomatic sutures by 5.4 mm (P < 0.01), a 3-mm greater interorbitale distance (P < 0.01), and a 2.1-mm wider infraorbital foramina distance (P = 0.007). There were no significant differences in the pyriform and maxillary angles (P = 0.15 and P = 0.52, respectively). Conclusions: Our analysis of midfacial skeletal anatomy revealed sexual dimorphism differences. Men exhibited more pronounced facial features than women, with a broader horizontal midfacial skeleton, a longer midfacial vertical height, and greater maxillary depths compared with women.

Abstract:The present paper was designed to analyze the dimensions of such important bony structures and surgical landmarks, which are used by many clinicians in many surgical interventions, in dry skull, cadaver, and healthy subjects on computed tomography (CT) images, and to determine whether there is a significant difference between these methods, and to obtain reference values from 3 different methods. Eight cadavers and 16 dry skulls and 100 three-dimensional (3D) CT images were studied. Necessary permissions for the study were obtained from Ethics Comittee. The 16 parameters were measured with an electronic digital caliper accurate 0.01 mm (LCD Digital Vernier Dial Microcaliper (INCA, DCLA-0605, 0.6–150 mm, USA). Also, the images obtained were transferred to the 3D Slicer (version 5.6.2) software program. Eight cadavers and 16 dry skulls of Turkish adults were unknown age and sex, whereas the mean age of females and males on CT images were 31.63±11.23 and 33.70±13.34 years, respectively. All values of the surgical landmarks for the anterior and middle cranial fossa obtained from cadavers, dry skulls, and 3D CT subjects (except length of lesser wing, anterior clinoid lengths for 2 sides, and width for right side) were statistically significant between 3 groups ( P <0.05). This paper was conducted for the morphometric analysis of the specific regions of the anterior cranial fossa (ACF), and middle cranial fossa (MCF), which are used in neurosurgical procedures This detailed anatomic and radiologic reference values will be an extremely important source in the planning of both clinical and surgical approaches for neurosurgeon, anatomist, and radiologists.

Abstract:Understanding the structure–property relationship of the human cranium is crucial for enhancing personalized head protection design and improving injury prevention criteria. This study presents a thorough spatial analysis of cranial morphology at both the macro- and micro-scale through micro-CT scanning. Two statistical quantifiers (i.e., Cortico-trabecular thickness (CoTb.Th) and Cortico-trabecular spacing (CoTb.Sp)) are defined here to characterize the micro-structural morphology in both the cortical and cancellous tables. A new adaptive layer segmentation method is proposed that considers the micro-structural variation to quantify the porosity threshold between the inner table, the diploë and the outer table. Then, statistical analysis was employed to investigate the interaction between donor information (e.g., age, sex, and sample extraction location) and structural characteristics (maximum and average porosity, CoTb.Th and CoTb.Sp). The morphological results revealed that the peak parallel porosity of 55 30% can be found in the diploë region, while the perpendicular porosity remained essentially stable and fluctuated between a range of 10–15%. Furthermore, the layer segmentation results demonstrated that the porosity threshold between the inner table and the diploë was 29.14 3.93%, and 46.50 4.80% between the diploë and the outer table. In addition, the statistical analyses indicated that age ( ) and sex ( ) were the most influential factors affecting maximum and average porosity. The novelty of this work stems from the comprehensive understanding of the morphological features of human crania, which is needed to advance the physical surrogate models of human skull, contributing to the mechanical testing of head protection devices and improvement of injury criteria.

Abstract:In cases of osseous defects, knowledge of the anatomy, and its age and sex-related variations, is essential for reconstruction of normal morphology. Here, we aimed at creating a 3D atlas of the human mandible in an adult sample using dense landmarking and geometric morphometrics. We segmented 50 male and 50 female mandibular surfaces from CBCT images (age range: 18.9–73.7 years). Nine fixed landmarks and 510 sliding semilandmarks were digitized on the mandibular surface, and then slid by minimizing bending energy against the average shape. Principal component analysis extracted the main patterns of shape variation. Sexes were compared with permutation tests and allometry was assessed by regressing on the log of the centroid size. Almost 49 percent of shape variation was described by the first three principal components. Shape variation was related to width, height and length proportions, variation of the angle between ramus and corpus, height of the coronoid process and inclination of the symphysis. Significant sex differences were detected, both in size and shape. Males were larger than females, had a higher ramus, more pronounced gonial angle, larger inter-gonial width, and more distinct antegonial notch. Accuracy of sexing based on the first two principal components in form space was 91 percent. The degree of edentulism was weakly related to mandibular shape. Age effects were not significant. The resulting atlas provides a dense description of mandibular form that can be used clinically as a guide for planning surgical reconstruction.

Abstract:Abstract Background The increased use of virtual bone images in forensic anthropology requires a comprehensive study on the observational errors between dry bones and CT reconstructions. Here, we focus on the consistency of nonmetric sex estimation traits on the human skull. Materials and methods We scored nine nonmetric traits on dry crania and mandibles ( n = 223) of archaeological origin and their CT reconstructions. Additionally, we 3D surface scanned a subsample ( n = 50) and repeated our observations. Due to the intricate anatomy of the mental eminence, we split it into two separate traits: the bilateral mental tubercles and the midsagittal mental protuberance. We provide illustrations and descriptions for both these traits. Results We obtained supreme consistency values between the CT and 3D surface modalities. The most consistent cranial traits were the glabella and the supraorbital margin, followed by the nuchal crest, zygomatic extension, mental tubercles, mental protuberance, mental eminence, mastoid process and ramus flexure, in descending order. The mental tubercles show higher consistency scores than the mental eminence and the mental protuberance. Discussion The increased interchangeability of the virtual modalities with each other as compared to the dry bone modality could be due to the lack of tactility on both the CT and surface scans. Moreover, tactility appears less essential with experience than a precise trait description. Future studies could revolve around the most consistent cranial traits, combining them with pelvic traits from a previous study, to test for accuracy.

Abstract:The most significant sexual differences in the human skull are located in the upper third of the face (the frontal bone), which is a useful research object, mainly in combination with virtual anthropology methods. However, the influence of biological relatedness on sexual dimorphism and frontal bone variability remains unknown. This study was directed at sexual difference description and sex classification using the form and shape of the external surface of the frontal bones from a genealogically documented Central European osteological sample (nineteenth to twentieth centuries). The study sample consisted of 47 cranial CT images of the adult members of several branches of one family group over 4 generations. Three-dimensional virtual models of the frontal bones were analyzed using geometric morphometrics and multidimensional statistics. Almost the entire external frontal surface was significantly different between males and females, especially in form. Significant differences were also found between this related sample and an unrelated one. Sex estimation of the biologically related individuals was performed using the classification models developed on a sample of unrelated individuals from the recent Czech population (Čechová et al. in Int J Legal Med 133: 1285 1294, 2019), with a result of 74.46% and 63.83% in form and shape, respectively. Failure of this classifier was caused by the existence of typical traits found in the biologically related sample different from the usual manifestation of sexual dimorphism. This can be explained as due to the increased degree of similarity and the reduction of variability in biologically related individuals. The results show the importance of testing previously published methods on genealogical data.

Abstract:Background and Objectives: This research investigated the morphometric dimensions of the optic foramen (OF), superior orbital fissure (SOF) and inferior orbital fissure (IOF), using indirect measurement techniques such as laser scanning, making it likely the first study of its kind. This study aimed to identify the morphometric variability of the main orbit communications and to highlight the differences between genders. Materials and Methods: The anthropometric study was conducted on sixty dry skulls (120 orbits) of adults aged between 20 and 70 years. Measurements of orbital communications were made using the RS6 laser scanner. The orbital parameters that were investigated are as follows: length and width of the SOF and IOF, and height and width of the OF. Results: In males, the average height of the OF was 8.27 mm and 8.13 mm in females, while the average width of the OF was 6.34 mm in males and 5.83 mm in females. The SOF average length was 21.09 mm in males and 17.58 mm in females. The widths of the SOF in the three thirds (anterior, middle and posterior) in males were 5.14/4.77/7.11 mm and 2.28/3.48/5.80 mm in females. The average length of the IOF was 33.05 mm in males and 32.30 mm in females. The widths of the IOF in the three thirds (anterior, middle and posterior) were 5.61/3.92/4.70 mm in males and 7.24/4.68/4.08 mm in females. Conclusions: The OF height and width were higher in males compared to females. The SOF length and width were higher in males compared to females. The IOF length was higher in males for the right orbit and higher in females for the left orbit. The IOF width for both orbits was higher in females in the anterior and middle third, and higher for males in the posterior third. Evaluation of dry skulls using laser scanning is reliable and recommended for data accuracy. Laser scanning can become a usable method for all indented and hard-to-reach regions of the cranial skeleton.

Abstract:Background Gender determination is critical to forensic science and medico-legal applications. Given that it is the most dimorphic bone in the skull and is frequently found intact, the mandibular bone may be extremely important in determining gender. Orthopantomograms (OPGs) are quite helpful in accurately estimating age and sex in this regard. It is a laborious task for forensics to determine the gender of victims of mass casualties, natural disasters, and severely dismembered bodies. The mandible, which is susceptible to development spurts, has a high degree of accuracy for determining sex. Aim This study aims to evaluate the potential use of coronoid height and condylar height as reliable anatomical markers for determining gender. Materials and methods In this study, 100 samples were used as study samples, 50 of which were male and 50 of which were female, in the age group of 20-30 years. The OPGs were obtained using a Planmeca Promax Scara 3 Digital OPG Machine (Planmeca, Helsinki, Finland), with settings of 70 kVp, 8 mA for 0.9 seconds, ensuring a 1:1 ratio. The images were then transferred to Planmeca Romexis® Viewer Software, Version 6.0 (Planmeca Oy, Helsinki, Finland) for measurement recording. Results Descriptive statistical analysis was done for this study and discriminant analysis was also done to create a population-specific formula. Results showed that the standard mean error for males concerning condylar height was 2.3 and coronoid height was 0.7. The standard mean error for females by condylar height was 1.6 and coronoid height was 0.6. The p-value was significant for coronoid height in both males and females. The p-value was not clinically significant for condylar height in both males and females. Conclusion The study's findings indicate that a larger mandibular angle is advantageous for gender assessment and helps with gender dimorphism. Out of both the parameters evaluated, coronoid height has shown statistical significance in both males and females. Hence, the study concludes that the parameter, coronoid height can be utilized to assess the gender of an individual.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to establish whether there is a significant relationship between the total occlusal area (TOCA) of two types of permanent upper molars (first—M1 and second—M2) and facial robusticity, as well as which of the examined facial regions indicate a relationship concerning the grade of their massiveness with the TOCA of analyzed molars in different sex adult Homo sapiens cranial samples. To obtain the values of the TOCA of the molars (n = 145), a morphometric method was performed based on the calibrated digital images of their occlusal surface using ImageJ software. The grades of the massiveness of six facial regions were assessed using qualitative scales of their expression, and an index of general facial robusticity was calculated. Two types of analyses were performed concerning standardized and non-standardized traits to the facial size, including Spearman's/or Pearson's correlations and partial rank correlations. The obtained results indicated the presence of a positive relationship between the relative TOCA of M2s and the relative general facial robusticity, as well as between the TOCA of both types of molars and the massiveness of trigone region of the facial skeleton in male crania. However, most of the obtained results were not consistent with the assumptions of the "localized masticatory stress hypothesis".

Abstract:Objective The purpose of this study is to analyze the nasal morphological characteristics in Chinese adult, of Han nationality, by the measurements in sagittal plan and the proportionality between nose and facial structures, in order to provide aesthetic references for rhinoplasty, and individual surgical planning. Methods During 2017 November to December,258 healthy Han Youth volunteers were included. Three-dimensional (3D) models of the facial characteristic information were collected using Artec 3D scanner, by standardized procedures. The nasal and facial distances and angulations were measured, based on predesigned facial landmarks. Thereafter, the proportions of above measurements were calculated. Results There was no significant difference between genders in absolute prominence. As for relative prominence, male nose is more prominent, resulted in a more stereoscopic facial profile. The nasal basal plane of both male and female, was more anterior than the infraorbital points, with 7％ of the absolute degree of the infraorbital points. The range of the angle between the nasal basal plane and coronal plane was 2-4 degrees. Conclusions This study sets a database for the external nasal characteristics of the young adult in Chinese Han nationality, which could provide quantitative references for preoperative evaluation and individually surgical planning.
Determination of Soft Tissue Thickness of Face for Facial Reconstruction - An Autopsy Study

Abstract:BACKGROUND Facial reconstruction aims to reconstruct the face of an unknown individual for identification. It is a process of recreating the face of a human being based on skull remains and can be used to identify otherwise unknown individuals or to reconstruct faces of historical figures. The measurement of facial soft tissue thickness is the basis of this method. The data obtained from various studies are charted and used as a guide for facial reconstruction. This study intended at determining the average soft tissue thickness of the face in 21 different points for the purpose of facial reconstruction in males and females. METHODS For the study, 144 cases belonging to the age of 21 to 60 years were brought for autopsy in the Department of Forensic medicine, Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram. They were divided into equal number of males and females. The soft tissue thickness was taken by needle puncture technique. Statistical analysis was done and the mean values in males and females and their age wise comparisons were obtained. Males and females showed strong positive correlation with age at certain points and the data obtained from this study provides a basis for facial reconstruction in the South Indian population. RESULTS Differences in mean values of general parameters and soft tissue thickness of face in different age groups and in both sexes and the coefficient of variation were also calculated at all points in both sexes. The mean values of height, weight were more in males than in females. The difference in the mean values of width of nose, width of forehead and the width of upper lip in females in different age groups was statistically significant. Among the soft tissue thicknesses at midline points of face, the difference in the mean values at the region of mid philtrum was statistically significant in males and females in different age groups. The difference in the mean values of soft tissue thickness in the lower lip in different age groups showed a statistical significance in males and females. Among the bilateral points of face, the difference in the mean values of soft tissue thickness of face in the region of right supraorbital, right and left gonion region showed a statistical significance in males in different age groups. In females, the left suborbital, right and left occlusal line and left mid zygomatic region showed a statistical difference. CONCLUSIONS The results of the study gave a set of average soft tissue thickness of face at 21 different points for an accurate reproduction of the skull in the South Indian population. In this study, the soft tissue thickness at midline and bilateral points were established. Further research in this field of facial reconstruction should incorporate various components of facial anatomy using modern imaging technology. A statistical analysis of multiple variables including other landmarks and various characteristics of the face could open up more relationships and would eventually lead to much more precise reconstruction. Abstract:The threat of rabies being reintroduced into Britain is probably greater now than at any time over the last 60 years. This threat is reviewed with particular regard to the problems that would be posed should rabies be introduced to the high-density fox populations found in many cities in southern England. Computer models can provide a valuable means of understanding the pattern of rabies spread in fox populations and the likely problems of control, so the construction of previous rabies models was reviewed. None were found to be suitable for analysing the particular problems posed by high-density, spatially heterogeneous, urban fox populations. Therefore, a new spatial stochastic simulation model was produced, based on demographic and other data collected during a long-term study on the urban fox population in Bristol, and fox density data collected from a number of cities in southern England. The simulation model was used to analyse the effects of spatial heterogeneity in the fox population on the pattern of rabies spread. Simulations were then used to evaluate the effects of: (i) varying levels of fox control; (ii) changing the size of the control zone; (iii) the onset of the rabies epizooty at different times of the year: and (iv) delay before the commencement of control on the chances of containing the disease. These simulations were run for four cities (Bournemouth and Poole, Bristol, Leicester and the West Midlands conurbation) with different mean fox population densities. It was found that the variance in the monthly velocity of the rabies front was greater for heterogeneous fox populations. In cities with high fox densities, low or moderate levels of control were unsuccessful in containing the disease, but these urban areas had the highest rates of success with the highest levels of control. A three-month delay in the commencement of a rabies control campaign on average reduced the chance of successfully controlling the disease by 10-20%, although this was higher in lower-density fox populations. Rabies outbreaks in the dispersal period were on average 10% less likely to be contained. Increasing the size of the control zone increased the chances of successfully containing the disease, although this effect was density dependent, so the effect was less in low-density fox populations. These results are discussed in relation to the current rabies contingency plans for British urban areas.

Abstract:Craniofacial development is a critical aspect of pediatric growth, influencing fields such as physical anthropology, pediatrics, forensic sciences, and clinical practice. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the trends in craniofacial measurements and indices in Latvian children aged 1-15. Methods: The anthropometrical measurements (head circumference, length, width, facial length, and width) were conducted on 375 children according to the guidelines by R. Martin, K. Saller, and J. Prīmanis at the Anthropology laboratory at the Institute of Anatomy and Anthropology, Rīga Stradiņš University. The cephalic index (CI) and the facial or prosopic index (PI) were calculated, allowing for a detailed examination of cranial and facial proportions. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, including the Pearson Chi-square test and the Spearman correlation coefficient. Results: The findings revealed a consistent increase in head circumference with age, with boys generally having slightly larger heads than girls. The boys and girls exhibited growth in head length and width, particularly noticeable between 1 and 2 years of age. Facial length and width increased with age, with boys typically having longer facial lengths and broader faces than girls. The most common cephalic index category is mesocephaly, which accounts for 52.85% of the population, followed by dolichocephaly at 32.94%. Brachycephaly and hyperbrachycephaly are less prevalent, representing 11.36% and 2.86% of the population. Regarding the facial index categories, hypereuryprosopic is the most prevalent, representing 45.54% of the population, closely followed by euryprosopic at 43.74%. Mesoprosopic is significantly less common, representing only 9.95%. The least common categories are leptoprosopic and hyperleptoprosopic, with prevalences of 0.64% and 0.12%, respectively. The indices analysis showed variations across age groups, with dolichocephaly being more common at younger ages and decreasing over time. Brachycephaly and hyperbrachycephaly remained relatively stable or decreased slightly with age, while mesocephaly displayed less variation. The relationship between the FI and CI in younger age groups was typically weak to moderate and inverse, with a significance level of p < 0.001 or p < 0.01. However, no meaningful correlation was observed in older children aged 14-15. Conclusions: This study provides valuable insights into the craniofacial development of Latvian children, highlighting the measurements, cranial and facial types, and their variations across age groups.
