Abstract:Lithium sulfur (Li-S) batteries are expected to become the next-generation rechargeable energy storage devices owing to their high theoretical energy density, environmental benignity and economic benefits. However, the undesirable lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) shuttling and sluggish redox kinetics of sulfur electrochemistry severely degenerate wide-ranging electrochemical performances, hindering the commercialization process of lithium sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Herein, a versatile three-dimensional ordered FeVO 4 (FVO) nanocatalyst is thoughtfully tailored and cooperated with commercialized carbon nanotubes (CNT) to co-modify polypropylene separator (PP) to address the above challenges. Elaborate experiments combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations verify that not only the LiPSs shuttling is largely restrained, but also the reductions of LiPSs and the decomposition of Li 2 S are effectively enhanced in Li-S batteries assembled with the above compound separator (denote FVO/CNT@PP). Encouragingly, even under the harsh conditions including a high sulfur loading (6.1 mg cm -2 ), a lean electrolyte (5 μL mg s -1 ) and a low negative to positive capacity (N/P) ratio (~ 2), the Li-S battery with the FVO/CNT@PP separator can deliver an initial areal capacity of 6.5 mAh cm -2 at 0.2 C, with a capacity retention of 70.8% over 100 cycles. This work enlightens the rational design of separator modification with tailored nanocatalyst for the development of high-performance Li-S batteries.
Effective Dual Polysulfide Rejection by a Tannic Acid/Fe-III Complex-Coated Separator in Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:The solubility behaviour of polysulfides in electrolyte solutions is a major bottleneck prior to the practical application of the lithium-sulfur battery. To address this issue, we fabricate a tannic acid/FeIII complex-coated polypropylene (PP) separator (TA/FeIII-PP separator) via a simple, fast, and green method. Benefiting from dual-confinement effects based on Lewis acid-base interactions between FeIII and polysulfides as well as the dipole-dipole interactions between rich phenol groups and polysulfides, the migration of polysulfides is effectively suppressed. Meanwhile, the porous structure of the PP separator is not destroyed by an additional coating layer. Thus, the TA/FeIII-PP separator can retain rapid lithium ion transport, eventually leading to a significant improvement in both the discharge capacity and rate performance of the corresponding lithium-sulfur cells. The cell with the TA/FeIII-PP separator presents a low capacity fade of 0.06% per cycle over 1000 cycles at 2.0 C, along with a high Coulombic efficiency of >97% over 300 cycles at 0.5 C. With respect to the one with the bare PP separator, the cell with the TA/FeIII-PP separator exhibits a 1.7-fold increase in the discharge capacity at 3.0 C. The proposed simple and economical approach shows great potential in constructing advanced separators to retard the shuttle effect of polysulfides for lithium-sulfur batteries.

Abstract:With the depletion of fossil energy and increasingly serious environmental pollution, the development of renewable sources of energy is imminent. Exploration of high-efficiency energy storage and transformation materials has become the focus in the field of energy research. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), as a kind of porous and crystalline polymer, have attracted extensive attention. In this work, we developed a composite material (Al2O3-G-COFSO3) using COFs and alumina, which can serve as an efficient separator in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. In the composite, alumina can improve the transport ability of Li+ and thus improve conductivity and SO3-COF can effectively restrain the shuttle of polysulfides by electrostatic repulsion. At a current density of 0.05C, the composite-based battery exhibited a high capacity of 1404 mAh g-1, which ranks as one of the highest values among all of the COF-based Li-S batteries. Even at a discharge rate of 1C, it can also achieve a high experimental capacity of 999 mAh g-1 with a low decay rate of 0.061% over 500 cycles. Moreover, the battery also showed a high electrochemical stability and long-term performance stability.

Abstract:The effective strategy of depositing modified layer on separator is widely utilized to suppress polysulfides shuttle in lithium-sulfur batteries, in which the modified layer partly sacrifices the transport of lithium-ion. Thus far, to simultaneously achieve fast lithium-ion transport and polysulfides-blocking remains a hot yet challenging issue. Herein, we developed a two-dimensional lithiated covalent organic framework nanosheets (Li-CON) layer that possess ordered lithiated-sites in the intrinsic nanopores of Li-CON. Those lithiated-sites can significantly facilitate the lithium-ion transport owing to low diffusion barrier. Besides, the Li-CON promotes Li-S bond breaking of relatively low reactivation energy due to the synergy effect of triazole units and lithiated-sites resulting in fast polysulfides conversion kinetics. Thus, Li-CON modified separator exhibits high lithium-ion conductivity and transference number, meanwhile, suppresses polysulfides shuttle and reduces the charging overpotential contributing to superior long cycle and high rate performance.

Abstract:To effectively prevent polysulfides from transporting from the cathode to the anode is one of the critical prerequisites for the successful commercialization of lithium-sulfur batteries. Unfortunately, conventional commercially available polypropylene separators find it hard to meet this requirement due to their incapability of blocking polysulfide shuttling. Therefore, the development of a facile and scalable production of a new modified separator that can effectively regulate the shuttling of polysulfides will be very beneficial for the practical application of lithium-sulfur batteries. In this work, bismuth ferrite powder with spontaneous polarization is adopted to modify the separator owing to its special interaction with polysulfides. We develop a facile hydrothermal method to synthesize cubic-like bismuth ferrite particles of high purity, and apply them on the surface of the commercial separator with graphene oxide and a conductive agent. Our results show that the so-modified separator can effectively suppress the shuttling of polysulfides and then greatly improve the electrochemical properties of the lithium-sulfur battery in terms of cycle stability, rate performance, reaction kinetics, self-discharge behaviour and anode corrosion. Remarkably, our cell exhibits a high capacity density of 5.1 mA h cm(-2)at an ultra-high sulfur loading of 5.6 mg cm(-2), which is higher than that of known commercial lithium ion batteries.
Ion Selective Covalent Organic Framework Enabling Enhanced Electrochemical Performance of Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:Ion selective separators with the capability of conducting lithium ion and blocking polysulfides are critical and highly desired for high-performance lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. Herein, we fabricate an ion selective film of covalent organic framework (denoted as TpPa-SO3Li) onto the commercial Celgard separator. The aligned nanochannels and continuous negatively charged sites in the TpPa-SO3Li layer can effectively facilitate the lithium ion conduction and meanwhile significantly suppress the diffusion of polysulfides via the electrostatic interaction. Consequently, the TpPa-SO3Li layer exhibits excellent ion selectivity with an extremely high lithium ion transference number of 0.88. When using this novel functional layer, the Li–S batteries with a high sulfur loading of 5.4 mg cm–2 can acquire a high initial capacity of 822.9 mA h g–1 and high retention rate of 78% after 100 cycles at 0.2 C. The Electrostatic Attraction and Catalytic Effect Enabled by Ionic–Covalent Organic Nanosheets on MXene for Separator Modification of Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:It is of great significance to mediate the redox kinetics and shuttle effect of polysulfides in pursuit of high‐energy‐density and long‐life lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. Herein, a new strategy is proposed based on the electrostatic attraction and catalytic effect of polysulfides for the modification of the polypropylene (PP) separator. Guanidinium‐based ionic–covalent organic nanosheets (iCON) on the surface of Ti3C2 is presented as a coating layer for the PP separator. The synergetic effects of Ti3C2 and iCON provide new platforms to suppress the shuttle effect of polysulfides, expedite the redox kinetics of sulfur species, and promote efficient conversion of the intercepted polysulfides. The functional separator endows carbon nanotube/sulfur cathodes with excellent electrochemical performance. The average capacity decay per cycle within 2000 cycles at 2 C is as low as 0.006%. The separator is even effective in the case of sulfur content of 90 wt% and sulfur loading of 7.6 mg cm−2; the reversible capacity, areal capacity, and volumetric capacity at 0.1 C are as high as 1186 mA h g−1, 9.01 mA h cm−2, and 1201 mA h cm−3, respectively. This work provides a promising approach toward separator modification for the development of high‐performance Li–S batteries.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are among the most promising new-generation energy storage devices due to their abundant reserves, low price, and high theoretical specific capacity (1675 mA h g-1). However, Li-S batteries still face challenges such as the "shuttle effect" and slow redox kinetic reactions during charging and discharging. Here, we report a covalent organic skeleton with a bisulfite (EB-COF:HSO3) modified separator, which is capable of mitigating the shuttle effect of polysulfide anions and accelerating Li-S transport. Specifically, negatively charged sulfate groups can inhibit identically charged polysulfide anions through electrostatic repulsion, thereby improving the cycling stability of the battery. At the same time, positively charged lithium ions are promoted to pass through the separator. As a result, the EB-COF:HSO3-modified separator exhibited excellent electrochemical performance at a current density of 1C, with an initial specific capacity of 968 mA h g-1, and maintained a capacity of 785 mA h g-1 after 500 cycles with a decay rate of only 0.04%. In comparison, EB-COF under the same conditions has an initial capacity of 813 mA h g-1 and a high decay rate of 0.12%. EB-COF:HSO3 was prepared by solvothermal and ion-exchange methods to enhance Li-S battery separators, suppressing the "shuttle effect" of soluble polysulfides and improving charge/discharge efficiencies with excellent electrochemical performance.
Fabrication of a Covalent Triazine Framework Functional Interlayer for High-Performance Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:The shuttling effect of polysulfides is one of the major problems of lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries, which causes rapid capacity fading during cycling. Modification of the commercial separator with a functional interlayer is an effective strategy to address this issue. Herein, we modified the commercial Celgard separator of Li–S batteries with one-dimensional (1D) covalent triazine framework (CTF) and a carbon nanotube (CNT) composite as a functional interlayer. The intertwined CTF/CNT can provide a fast lithium ionic/electronic transport pathway and strong adsorption capability towards polysulfides. The Li–S batteries with the CTF/CNT/Celgard separator delivered a high initial capacity of 1314 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C and remained at 684 mAh g−1 after 400 cycles−1 at 1 C. Theoretical calculation and static-adsorption experiments indicated that the triazine ring in the CTF skeleton possessed strong adsorption capability towards polysulfides. The work described here demonstrates the potential for CTF-based permselective membranes as separators in Li–S batteries.

Metal–Organic Framework Decorated Polymer Nanofiber Composite Separator for Physiochemically Shielding Polysulfides in Stable Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries have attracted numerous attention owing to their overwhelming theoretical capacity. However, the dissolution and shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) have seriously limited the development of Li–S batteries. Herein, we rationally designed a dual-engineered nanofibrous composite separator with a Janus structure to both physically and chemically block LiPS shuttling in Li–S batteries. The separator, consisting of a cross-linked poly(vinyl alcohol)/poly(acrylic acid) (CPP) composite nanofiber matrix and the electrosprayed poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) layer on the cathode side, is fabricated through a facile electrospinning–electrospray coupling approach and signed as /ZIF-8. The intrinsic narrow size and opened Lewis acid sites of ZIF-8 both confine free transport of LiPS anions. Meanwhile, the cross-linked CPP layer with abundant electronegative groups (−COOH) can shield the LiPS shuttle while ensuring the integrity of the flexible separator. Benefiting from the unique Janus structure, the /ZIF-8 separator demonstrates a high initial capacity of 1125 mAh g–1 at a good coulombic efficiency of 98% over 300 cycles at 0.1 C. Abstract:The severe shuttle effect problem of soluble polysulfides greatly hinders the development of long-life lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, which can be improved by separator modification. This study develops a bilayer separator based on an effective surface and structure dual modification strategy. This bilayer separator (named as TCNFs/SPNFs) is constructed by the integration of a carbon-based nanofiber layer (surface modification layer) with a polymer-based nanofiber layer (structure modification layer) through a facile electrospinning process. The excellent electrolyte wettability of the nanofibers accelerates lithium-ion migration, while the good electronic conductivity of the carbon layer facilitates fast electron conduction. The TiO 2 and SiO 2 nanoparticles embedded in the separator provide abundant active sites for immobilizing the polysulfides. Owing to these synergistic effects, this multi-functional separator helps inhibit the shuttling problem and thus enhances the active sulfur utilization. The as-prepared battery with the TCNFs/SPNFs separator delivers significantly enhanced the electrochemical performances, producing a low capacity decay rate of 0.061% per cycle at 1 C over 1000 cycles and an admirable rate capacity of 886.7 mAh g −1 at 2 C. Even with a high sulfur loading of 4.8 mg cm −2 , a remarkable areal capacity of 6.0 mAh cm −2 is attained. This work is believed to provide a promising strategy to develop novel separators for high performance Li S batteries.

Efficient capture and conversion of polysulfides by zinc protoporphyrin framework-embedded triple-layer nanofiber separator for advanced Li-S batteries

Abstract:The practical application of Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries is significantly inhibited by (i) the notable 'shuttle effect' of lithium polysulfides (LiPS), (ii) the corrosion of the lithium interface, and (iii) the sluggish redox reaction kinetics. The functional separator in the Li-S battery has the potential to provide the perfect solution to these problems. Herein a triple-layer multifunctional PVDF-based nanofiber separator, which contains GoTiN/PVDF layer on the top and bottom and ZnTPP/PVDF layer on the middle, is designed. The polarity and porous structure of this multifunctional separator can greatly improve the wettability of electrolytes and enhance the transportation of Li+. With the zinc-based porphyrin framework (ZnTPP) structure, this separator has a strong chemisorption and LiPS conversion ability, which greatly prevent the 'shuttle effect'. Consequently, the designed multilayer separator showed excellent electrochemical performance. As a result, the cell with GoTiN@ZnTPP@GoTiN nanofiber membrane displayed an initial discharge capacity of 1180 mAh/g with a benign capacity retention of 65.9% at 0.5C and high coulombic efficiency of more than 98.5% after 100 cycles. Even at 2C, it can still release a capacity of 798 mAh/g. Moreover, the remarkable capacity of 591 mAh/g could be achieved with a high sulfur load of 5.76 mg/cm2 under a current density of 0.1C. Based on these merits, this novel and scalable multifunctional separator is a promising candidate to replace the conventional PP separator for advanced Li-S batteries to deal with various challenges.
Electronic and Ionic Co-Conductive Coating on the Separator Towards High-Performance Lithium–sulfur Batteries

Abstract:A thin coating layer composed of the mixture of the electronic conductive carbon and lithium ionic conductive inorganic solid electrolyte was introduced on one side of the routine Celgard separator. This functional coated separator is designed to localize the polysulfides on the cathode side and act as an upper current collector for further utilization of sulfur while alleviating the ion conductivity decrease induced by the dissolved polysulfides in the discharge and charge process. Moreover, catalytic conversion of polysulfides by the solid state highly ionic conductor is observed. This brings significant improvement in battery specific capacity and cycling stability, with an initial discharge capacity of 1247 mA h g(-1) and a reversible capacity of 830 mA h g(-1) after 150 extended cycles at 0.5 C rate. Ultrafine Co-Species Interspersed g-C3N4 Nanosheets and Graphene as an Efficient Polysulfide Barrier to Enable High Performance Li-S Batteries

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are regarded as one of the promising advanced energy storage systems due to their ultrahigh capacity and energy density. However, their practical applications are still hindered by the serious shuttle effect and sluggish reaction kinetics of soluble lithium polysulfides. Herein, g-C3N4 nanosheets and graphene decorated with an ultrafine Co-species nanodot heterostructure (Co@g-C3N4/G) as separator coatings were designed following a facile approach. Such an interlayer can not only enable effective polysulfide affinity through the physical barrier and chemical binding but also simultaneously have a catalytic effect on polysulfide conversion. Because of these superior merits, the Li-S cells assembled with Co@g-C3N4/G-PP separators matched with the S/KB composites (up to ~70 wt% sulfur in the final cathode) exhibit excellent rate capability and good cyclic stability. A high specific capacity of ~860 mAh g−1 at 2.0 C as well as a capacity-fading rate of only ~0.035% per cycle over 350 cycles at 0.5 C can be achieved. This bifunctional separator can even endow a Li-S cell at a low current density to exhibit excellent cycling capability, with a capacity retention rate of ~88.4% at 0.2 C over 250 cycles. Furthermore, a Li-S cell with a Co@g-C3N4/G-PP separator possesses a stable specific capacity of 785 mAh g−1 at 0.2 C after 150 cycles and a superior capacity retention rate of ~84.6% with a high sulfur loading of ~3.0 mg cm−2. This effective polysulfide-confined separator holds good promise for promoting the further development of high-energy-density Li-S batteries.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur batteries are one of the most promising next-generation batteries due to their high theoretical specific capacity, but are impeded by the low utilization of insulating sulfur, unstable morphology of the lithium metal anode, and transport of soluble polysulfides. Here, by coating a layer of nano titanium dioxide and carbon black onto a commercial polypropylene separator, we demonstrate a new composite separator that can confine the polysulfides on the cathode side, forming a catholyte chamber, and at the same time block the dendritic lithium on the anode side. Lithium-sulfur batteries using this separator show a high initial capacity of 1206 mA h g(-1) and a low capacity decay rate of 0.1% per cycle at 0.5C. Fe-N-doped Carbon Nanofiber and Graphene Modified Separator for Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:A novel lightweight, multi-functional layer comprised of 1D porous metal-embedded nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers (M-N-C) and 2D graphene sheets is introduced to modify a commercial polyolefin separator for using in lithium-sulfur batteries. Benefiting from the high electrical conductivity and strong lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) chemical adsorption ability of M-N-C, the porous intercalation-structured modified layer exhibits excellent ability to suppress LiPSs shuttling while maintaining high lithium-ion transport, and the modified layer functions as a highly conductive upper current collector to reutilize active sulfur species. The cell assembled with the modified multifunctional separator shows a high rate capability and excellent cycling stability. These exciting results indicate that this multifunctional membrane could be a promising separator candidate for Li-S batteries.
Cationic Covalent Organic Framework as Separator Coating for High-Performance Lithium Selenium Disulfide Batteries

Abstract:Selenium disulfide that combines the advantages of S and Se elements is a new material for Li-chalcogen battery cathodes. However, like Li-S batteries, the shuttle effect seriously restricts the performance of Li-SeS2 batteries. In this work, we have synthesized a kind of nitrogen-rich lithophilic covalent organic framework (ATG-DMTZ-COF) as a separator coating material for Li-SeS2 batteries. Here, the N atom in the ATG-DMTZ-COF channel preferentially interacts with the lithium ion in the electrolyte to form N...Li bond, which significantly improves the diffusion coefficient of lithium ions during the charge and discharge. More importantly, we prove that the pore size of ATG-DMTZ-COF will decrease sharply because there is a large amount of TFSI- in the channel, and finally the shuttling of polysulfide and polyselenide is suppressed by the sieving effect. As a consequence, Li-SeS2 batteries using the ATG-DMTZ-COF separator coating show excellent performances with an initial discharge capacity of 1028.7 mAh g−1 at 0.5 C under a SeS2 loading of 2.38 mg cm−2. Furthermore, when the current density is 1C, the specific capacity of 404.7 mAh g−1 can be maintained after 700 cycles.

Abstract:The implementation of a functional separator represents a highly encouraging approach to mitigating polysulfide shuttling in lithium–sulfur (Li–S). In this study, a two-dimensional (2D) 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol (Tp)-p-phenylenediamine (Pa) covalent organic framework/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) functional layer was introduced to enhance the performance of the commercial separator in Li–S batteries. The resulting 2D TpPa@rGO modified separators exhibit significantly improved electronic and ionic conductivity when compared to the unmodified separator, effectively mitigating lithium polysulfide shuttling and enhancing sulfur cathode utilization. It is indicated that a heterostructured composite of a nitrogen-group-containing COF and an electronic conductive addictive is an effective modification to the separator. Consequently, the modified cell demonstrated a minimal degradation rate of only 0.12% per cycle over 350 cycles at 0.5 C.

Abstract:Because of the existence of the soluble lithium polysulfides, the requirement for an ideal separator for lithium sulfur (Li-S) batteries is higher than that in LIBs. Herein, we report a double-layered MOF-PAN/rGO-PAN nanofiber membrane as an alternative to commercial polyolefin separators for Li-S battery. This PAN-based membrane possesses the intrinsic advantages of good mechanical property, thermal stability and high electrolyte uptake, showing a high lithium ion transference number of 0.81. The in situ grown MOF particles by low pressure chemical vapor deposition attach on the surface of the nanofibers tightly, and these exposed particles can maximize the utilization for trapping polysulfides through chemisorption. With this novel functional separator, the Li-S batteries can provide a high initial capacity of 1302 mAh g−1 at 0.5 C. At a high rate of 5 C, the capacity decay rate is only 0.03% per cycle over 600 cycles. More importantly, even with a high sulfur loading of 7.7 mg cm−2, the Li-S battery is able to deliver a high areal capacity of 7.8 mAh cm−2 after 50 cycles.
Novel Bifunctional Separator with a Self-Assembled FeOOH/Coated g-C 3 N 4 /KB Bilayer in Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:Separator modification with metal oxide and carbon composite recently has become a potential and competitive way to confine polysulfide diffusion and mitigate the shuttling effect. However, other modification methods also have an impact on the stability of the modified layer and the enhancement of electrochemical performance. Herein, we first design a novel bifunctional separator combined with one self-assembled FeOOH layer via a chemical way and one conductive g-C3N4/KB layer by physical coating. Different from directly coating the metal oxide and carbon composite on the separator, the self-assembled FeOOH layer is firmly formed on the PP separator, which enables the chemical capture of the soluble polysulfide and prohibit the shuttling effect. Then, the coated g-C3N4/KB layer is further introduced to greatly enhance the transportation of lithium ions and physically confine the migration of intermediates. As a result, the battery with this bifunctional separator (G-SFO) achieves outstanding rate capacities (1000, 901, and 802 mA h/g at 0.5, 1, and 2 C). After 900 cycles at 1 C, it also shows excellent long cycle performance, with relatively low fading (0.055%).
