Abstract:From the standpoint of the school settings, sport participation constitutes a key strategy concerning the manifestation of positive behaviors that result from the development of personal and social responsibility. Based on the TPSR model, the goal of this study was to evaluate the effects of an intervention geared toward teaching life skills through sport to youngsters who had been committed. The participants were evaluated before and after the intervention. After the initial evaluation, they were randomly assigned to the experimental and control groups. The experimental group took part in the community football program, while the control group attended physical education classes not based on the TPSR model. The experimental model consisted of 3 weekly sessions over the course of 6 weeks, which totaled 18 sessions. This investigation supplied empirical evidence concerning the potential of community sport programs in the teaching and development of life skills deemed necessary for an adequate reintegration of such at-risk youngsters. The model was shown to be valid both in stimulating changes of attitudes and in promoting the adherence to socially positive behaviors. The effectiveness of the model, as well as its unique approach, make its application attractive to both the youngsters and the professionals. This program facilitates the training of youngsters to act, in the sense of promoting both their autonomy and the acquisition of a system of ethics and moral values within a culture of responsibility for how decisions affect the individual and the community. Finally, this intervention generated empirical support in favor of the argument that sport constitutes a unique opportunity within the educational process to establish values, beliefs, attitudes, and practical habits pertaining relationships and cooperation that generate social responsibility in individuals.
Positive youth development related athlete experiences and coach behaviors following a targeted coach education course

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to examine if a positive youth development (PYD) coach education course would (i) result in more positive developmental experiences perceived by athletes of participant coaches and (ii) increase the frequency of PYD-oriented behaviors exhibited by participant coaches. A total of 14 coaches and 270 athletes participated in the study. Eight coaches ( M age = 38.0 years) overseeing 154 athletes ( M age = 13.8 years) were in the control group, while six coaches ( M age = 36.7 years) overseeing 116 athletes ( M age = 13.9 years) were in the experimental group. The 10-week intervention combined a group-based PYD coach education course with individualized coach meetings. Seven practices per coach were observed and recorded at baseline ( n = 2), intervention ( n = 3), and follow-up ( n = 2). Athletes completed measures of coach-athlete relationships and sport experiences at the three time points. Results of the 2 × 3 (group × time) mixed ANOVAs demonstrated that coaches in the intervention group increased the frequency of their PYD-oriented behaviors during the intervention but returned to levels slightly above baseline at follow-up. Coaches in the control group did not change their behaviors over the same period. Athlete reports of their developmental experiences were high at all time points and did not change over time. Findings suggest PYD coach education has the potential to influence coach behavior, but further research is required to determine how to create sustained changes for coaches and increases in athletes’ perceived positive developmental experiences.

Abstract:This study aims to develop and evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of an intervention program designed to foster soft skills among primary-school students. Conducted in Portugal, the program employed face-to-face sessions and involved 2958 fourth-grade students from nine municipalities. The program “Players of Dreams” (PD) [“Brincadores de Sonhos”] is an active learning approach that encourages students and other educational community members to engage actively in the learning process. The PD content was derived from a literature review and interviews with primary school teachers regarding the essential skills for success in life, like the considerable skills of an entrepreneurial culture. The PD program utilized group dynamics, pedagogical narratives/storytelling, visual thinking strategies (diagrams and illustrations), family involvement in activities, and specially prepared songs to facilitate learning. Teachers who implemented the program underwent 25 h of classroom training on entrepreneurial pedagogy and received a manual for conducting PD sessions. Students completed activities in their PD manuals and corresponding evaluation forms throughout the program The results provide preliminary evidence to support the benefits of implementing the intervention. The facilitators observed changes in student behavior related to the promotion of confidence, responsibility, sociability, and autonomy. The PD program shows promise for engaging young students and fostering the growth of an entrepreneurial culture. Future research could assess the effectiveness of PD in delivering education and support interventions, while longitudinal studies could provide valuable quantitative and qualitative data to inform educational policies for primary schools.

Abstract:The Coaching Life Skills in Sport Questionnaire (CLSS-Q) is a 5-factor 36-item scale developed in the English language to assess the extent to which coaches are intentional in their approaches to teaching life skills through sport. To allow for usage of the CLSS-Q in Portuguese-speaking countries, the purpose of this study was to investigate the cross-cultural adaptation and the psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the CLSS-Q (P-CLSS-Q). In Phase 1, the scale was cross-culturally adapted through consecutive stages of translation and back-translation, expert feedback, committee revision, and pretesting. In Phase 2, 753 youth sport coaches (i.e., 376 Brazilians and 377 Portuguese) completed the questionnaire. After randomly splitting participants into two independent samples, the translated and cross-culturally adapted questionnaire was subjected to an exploratory factor analysis and a confirmatory factor analysis. Other analyses were also applied to verify the instrument’s psychometric properties. The results led to a 5-factor 30-item scale with indications that the P-CLSS-Q has some evidence of validity in measuring the extent to which coaches intentionally teach life skills through sport in Portuguese-speaking countries. Future studies are needed to further investigate the psychometric properties of both the CLSS-Q and the P-CLSS-Q in other sociocultural contexts where coaches have varying levels of exposure to the concept of life skills and its implication for coaching practice.

Abstract:As the literature is far from being unanimous in regards to the psychosocial benefits of sports practice, we conducted a preliminary qualitative study with nine teenagers who participated in a group sporting challenge to better understand: (1) youths’ perceptions regarding the program’s most important dimensions and (2) its effects in the physical, psychological and social spheres of their life. Following these results, we highlighted six driving principles we consider to be significant to interventions involving sports as a tool for psychosocial development: (1) cooperation amongst youth; (2) facilitators’ discipline, direct involvement and positive attitude; (3) moving the youths beyond their physical, psychological and social comfort zones; (4) the interplay between enjoyment and effort; (5) constant innovation in training content; (6) risk as a driving force for cohesion and social ties.

Abstract:Rationale/purpose: Participation in youth sport can lead to positive psychological, social, and physical outcomes. However, youth sport is highly diverse as each specific sport consists of varying contextual factors such as the type of sport, level of sport, and team gender. The current study examines the relationship between contextual factors of youth sport and what youth sport leaders (YSLs) perceive to be prominent issues and topics in their specific sport context. By understanding these relationships, positive youth development-focused coach education can be advanced to meet the diverse needs of YSLs who are charged managing the youth sport context.Design/methodology/approach: A brief online survey was used to identify the issues and topics that YSLs perceive to be the most prominent within their specific youth sport context.Findings: YSLs most frequently identified teamwork, parental influence, and sportspersonship. Moreover, communication effectiveness was most likely to be recognized as important for male sport teams and no-contact sport teams, while positive youth development was considered important by no-contact sports and sports with younger participants. Additionally, missed opportunities related to social justice issues that permeate sport and society are discussed.Practical implications and research contribution: Findings from the current exploratory study can be used to advance PYD-focused coach education by not only identifying common issues and topics across youth sport, but also by addressing context-specific needs.

Abstract:Purpose : The aim of this study was to examine whether, drawing on the perception of their coaches, the application of the pedagogical model of sport education could be associated with satisfying the basic psychological needs of children from socially vulnerable backgrounds. Method : A 36-session sport education season was implemented within a community program for youths from disadvantaged environments. Three coaches, one researcher, and 31 children aged 9–11 years (17 boys and 14 girls) of diverse ethnicities participated. Qualitative data were obtained through four focus groups conducted during the program in addition to the research diary of the researcher, who played the role of participant observer. Results : The coaches observed a progressive evolution in the satisfaction of the basic psychological needs of competence, autonomy, relatedness, and the need referred to as novelty. Discussion/Conclusion : We may conclude that sport education can be a valuable tool to improve the satisfaction of these needs in children from socially vulnerable backgrounds.

Abstract:BackgroundMany Australian children are insufficiently active to accrue health benefits and physical activity (PA) levels are consistently lower among youth of low socio-economic position. PA levels decline dramatically during adolescence and evidence suggests that competency in a range of fundamental movement skills (FMS) may serve as a protective factor against this trend.Methods/designThe Supporting Children’s Outcomes Using Rewards Exercise and Skills (SCORES) intervention is a multi-component PA and FMS intervention for primary schools in low-income communities, which will be evaluated using a group randomized controlled trial. The socio-ecological model provided a framework for the 12-month intervention, which includes the following components: teacher professional learning, student leadership workshops (including leadership accreditation and rewards, e.g., stickers, water bottles), PA policy review, PA equipment packs, parental engagement via newsletters, FMS homework and a parent evening, and community partnerships with local sporting organizations. Outcomes will be assessed at baseline, 6- and 12-months. The primary outcomes are PA (accelerometers), FMS (Test of Gross Motor Development II) and cardiorespiratory fitness (multi-stage fitness test). Secondary outcomes include body mass index [using weight (kg)/height (m2)], perceived competence, physical self-esteem, and resilience. Individual and environmental mediators of behavior change (e.g. social support and enjoyment) will also be assessed. The System for Observing Fitness Instruction Time will be used to assess the impact of the intervention on PA within physical education lessons. Statistical analyses will follow intention-to-treat principles and hypothesized mediators of PA behavior change will be explored.DiscussionSCORES is an innovative primary school-based PA and FMS intervention designed to support students attending schools in low-income communities to be more skilled and active. A Coach Development Program: A Guided Online Reflective Practice Intervention Study

Abstract:Coaches can influence athlete outcomes, such as performance and personal development; yet, coaches themselves are learners in their own right, who seek to develop their coaching craft. Reflective practice is essential for coaches' development; however, coaches might engage and benefit from reflective practice in myriad ways. This study aimed to evaluate if online reflective journaling (ORJ) enhances the depth of reflection of sports coaches in a 4-week coach development programme (CDP). Participants were a convenience sample of 83 sports coaches from several sports, divided into an intervention group (N = 42) and a control group (N = 41). Data collection used a mixed-methods approach, examining a CDP focused on the coaches' reflective practice. The results revealed that reflection was the only dependent variable that showed significant differences over time. Participation in ORJ showed positive effects on reflection in both groups; however, only the experimental group was statistically significant. For this sample, ORJ was found to help enhance coaches' reflection towards critical reflection. All texts included in pre-, post-, and follow-up tests were coded for trustworthiness purposes. This finding supports the potential of ORJ in nurturing reflective practice, which is considered a core competency in becoming a successful sports coach.

Abstract:In the presence of peripheral atherosclerotic disease, inappropriate adeno sine release during exercise might promote excessive arteriolar dilation leading to steal phenomena and ischemia. In order to test this hypothesis, IV aminophylline (6 mg/kg over fifteen min utes), a dosage known to effectively block adenosine receptors, was acutely ad ministered—in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study design—in 13 patients with intermittent claudication and documented atherosclerotic disease. All pa tients performed two treadmill exercise tests at the same hour on two consecu tive days, five minutes after aminophylline or placebo administration randomly allocated. Pain-free time was 109±133 (mean±SD) seconds after placebo and 173±165 seconds after aminophylline (p < .01); maximum time to claudication was 273±191 seconds after placebo and 397±318 seconds after aminophylline (p < .05). The authors conclude that intravenous aminophylline markedly increases the walking capacity in patients with intermittent claudication, possibly by pre venting flow maldistribution phenomena through adenosine receptors block ade.

Abstract:Physical activity and sport (PAS) programmes are an important part of organized extracurricular activities for children and young people. They appear as potentially inclusive environments where students could be provided with holistic development based on active and healthy lifestyles. The aim of this study was to evaluate and describe the Gipuzkoa School Sport Programme (GSSP) from the positive youth development (PYD). The research was carried out based on CPAR (Critical Participatory Action-Research) methodology: a "CPAR group" was created -including researchers and policymakers- to carry out the evaluation of the GSSP in which we analyzed (a) the social environment or PYD climate and (b) life skills. The evaluation and description of the GSSP confirmed that it meets most requirements for providing positive development contexts and opportunities for PYD. The choice of prioritizing multisport and deliberate play and putting early specialization aside seem key conditions to ensure PYD-promoting environments. This work could serve as a referent for decision-makers in organizations dedicated to designing, developing, implementing, and evaluating PYD-focused extracurricular youth sport programmes.
An Innovative Intervention Model for Children and Young People in Residential Care: The D'ART-TE Project

Abstract:(1) Background: Residential care (RC) for children and youth should provide a holistic experience of growing up. Currently, RC homes face many challenges, highlighting the need for validated, innovative interventions. D'AR-TE is a pilot project aimed at creating an innovative intervention model for children and youth in RC, promoting protective factors through activities designed to enhance personal skills, socialization, and relationship building. The project spanned three years, focusing on two main areas: "Promoting the SELF" (including Sports, Art, and Virtual Reality) and "Promoting the US" (group activities with families and non-institutionalized peers). (2) Methods: To validate the D'AR-TE model, 46 children and youth in RC, aged between 6 and 20 years, were assessed. They were divided into an experimental group (26 participants) and a control group (20 participants). The evaluation, conducted at the beginning and end of the project, focused on cognitive and neuropsychological domains. (3) Results: By the end of D'AR-TE, the experimental group showed statistically significant improvements, including decreased aggression perception, increased social support, enhanced self-concept, and better cognitive and emotional performance. (4) Conclusions: These results suggest that D'AR-TE had a positive impact and could be a valid and replicable model for children and youth in RC.

Abstract:Background: School-based recreational opportunities for youth from low-income inner-city neighbourhoods are often lacking. School programs represent an ideal location for promoting youth development in low-income areas because they can provide safe, supervised, and structured activities. Such activities should include not only physical education (PE) programs, but other extra-curricular activities such as intramural sports and school sport teams. Because we were interested in how these programs were associated with youth development, we used the concept of positive youth development (PYD) to guide this study. Purpose: This case study examined school staff members’ and children's perceptions of school PE, intramural sports, and sport teams with a view to establish factors that facilitated or impeded PYD. Method: Data were collected via individual interviews with eight teachers and 59 children from an inner-city school that had a mission to promote positive behaviors consistent with PYD. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and subjected to a categorical aggregation analysis procedure. Results: Findings showed factors that facilitated or impeded PYD varied across different contexts. In PE, the importance of a specialist PE teacher and establishing clear boundaries during lessons while providing children with perceptions of choice were important. Children enjoyed intramural sports, but there were few attempts to create an appropriate developmental atmosphere during these sessions. In fact, intramural sports were associated with negative student interactions. Coaches of the sport teams used techniques to promote social interactions and respect. Most notable student outcomes associated with PYD related to fostering empathy and social connections. Conclusion: These findings showed differences in contextual factors across the PE/sport programs that helped promote or impeded PYD. These differences revealed some practical suggestions for promoting PYD, which include focusing on the developmental orientation of PE classes, the fun of intramurals, and the ‘life skills’ focus of the sport teams. Furthermore, we suggest an integrated, school-wide approach is required to help promote PYD.

Abstract:Le club de sport (CS) est un milieu de vie privilégié pour promouvoir la santé. Cependant, les interventions de promotion de la santé (PS) existantes dans les CS ciblent majoritairement un seul comportement de santé et des pratiquants sportifs masculins, et leurs évaluations renseignent peu leurs déploiements. Pour dépasser ces limites, l’intervention PROSCeSS a été co-construite à partir du modèle théorique du CS promoteur de santé et de stratégies multi-niveaux et multi-déterminants de santé. L’objectif de cette étude pilote était d’évaluer le déploiement de l’intervention PROSCeSS et d’identifier les facteurs influençant son déploiement. Une étude qualitative comprenant des enregistrements de réunions, des échanges par e-mails et par téléphone, et des entretiens avec les référents de 14 CS a été réalisée. Même si le nombre de CS qui sont allés au bout de l’intervention est faible, ceux-ci considèrent qu’ils ont un rôle à jouer dans la santé de leurs membres. Leur capacité à développer des activités de PS et à déployer les étapes de l’intervention est influencée par les ressources disponibles, le soutien qu’ils reçoivent de leur fédération sportive et la capacité d’un porteur de projet (référent) à s’impliquer. Les CS qui ont déployé l’intervention ont mis en place plusieurs stratégies qui leur permettent d’intégrer la santé dans les habitudes organisationnelles, sociales, économiques et environnementales du CS et de développer de nouvelles activités de PS, telles que des sessions d’activités sportives adaptées et des activités de sensibilisation à l’échauffement, à l’alimentation et aux gestes de premier secours. Cette étude montre qu’il est important de comprendre les spécificités des contextes dans lesquels les interventions de PS sont déployées. Parce qu’elle a conduit à retravailler les étapes de l’intervention et à développer un nouveau design d’évaluation, elle met en évidence le rôle essentiel des études pilotes pour le développement et l’évaluation des interventions.

Abstract:Youth sporting activities have been explored as a way to impact positive personal transformation and development, glaringly demonstrated by world-wide investments in public policies, programs, and projects. We studied positive effects of participation in sports on the developmental assets of 614 adolescents (13.1 ± 1.7 years) actively engaged in extracurricular sport programs targeted at socially disadvantaged youths, from five municipalities across five states of the southern, south-eastern and north-eastern regions of Brazil. Participants responded to a developmental assets questionnaire designed to capture sociodemographic and human development data. Multilevel logistic regression was used to explore associations between years of participation in sport and human development indicators, controlling for age and sex. Our results showed that the quality of the young people’s support network and duration of program participation positively influenced sport participation, which, in turn, was associated with willingness to learn. A strong association was also observed between sport participation and developmental assets. Thus, we offer new evidence of a relationship between positive development and environmental factors in which individual and contextual forces can be aligned, and we provide new reference data for developing countries.

Abstract:High school sport is one of the most popular school-based extracurricular activities in North America, situated as a developmental activity during which coaches can foster quality relationships with students to promote basic psychological needs satisfaction and teach life skills. The primary purpose of the study was to examine associations between coach–athlete relationships, basic psychological needs satisfaction and thwarting, and the teaching of life skills in Canadian high school sport. The secondary purpose consisted of addressing the psychometric properties of the scales employed in the study, namely the Coach–Athlete Relationship Questionnaire, the self-report version of the Interpersonal Behaviors Questionnaire, and a modified coach version of the Life Skills Scale for Sport. The sample was comprised of 1238 (58.8% male) Canadian high school coaches and the data were analysed using structural equation modelling. The mediated model indicated that coaches' perceptions of their interpersonal behaviours satisfying athletes' basic psychological needs either fully or partially mediated the positive relationships between coach–athlete relationships and the teaching of life skills. Coach–athlete relationships, particularly those within which coaches exhibit interpersonal behaviours that satisfy athletes' basic psychological needs, appear to be associated with the teaching of life skills in the context of high school sport.

Abstract:Guided by models of positive youth development (PYD), this study examined the associations among perceived coach autonomy support, life skills acquisition, and the Five Cs of PYD. Cross-sectional data were collected from a purposive sample of 300 youth athletes ( M age =17.16, SD = 1.28, male = 53.5%) recruited from public junior and secondary schools in Botswana. Participants completed measures of coach autonomy support, life skills acquisition, and the Five Cs. Results from regression analyses indicated that perceived coach autonomy support was significantly associated with the perceived acquisition of eight life skills through sport (e.g., teamwork, goal setting), as well as character ( B = .10, p = .001), connection ( B = .15, p < .001), and caring/compassion ( B = .10, p = .006) dimensions of PYD. Of the eight sport-specific life skills examined, perceived acquisition of teamwork was significantly related to athletes' perceptions of competence ( B = 0.21, p = .023), confidence ( B = 0.14, p = .009), and connection ( B = 0.16, p = .012), while perceived acquisition of social skills was significantly related to athletes' perception of character ( B = 0.11, p = .022). These findings highlight perceived coach autonomy support as important to life skills acquisition and positive developmental outcomes among Botswana youth athletes. Importantly, in this African context, sport appears to be a compelling pathway through which youth can attain valuable competencies, such as teamwork and social skills, that promote positive personal (i.e., competence, confidence, character) and social outcomes (i.e., connection) external to sport.

Abstract:An ordered NotI fragment map containing over 60 loci and encompassing approximately 17 Mb has been constructed for human chromosome band 11p15. Forty-two probes, including 11 NotI-linking cosmids, were subregionally mapped to 11p15 using a subset of the J1-deletion hybrids. These and 23 other probes defining loci previously mapped to 11p15 were hybridized to genomic DNA digested with NotI and 5 other infrequently cleaving restriction enzymes and separated by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. Thirty-nine distinct NotI fragments were detected encompassing approximately 85% of the estimated length of 11p15. The predicted order of the gene loci used is cen-MYOD1-PTH-CALCA-ST5-RBTN1-HPX-HBB-RRM1 -TH/INS/IGF2-H19-CTSD-MUC2-DRD4-HRAS - RNH-tel. This map will allow higher resolution mapping of new 11p15 markers, facilitate positional cloning of disease genes, and provide a framework for the physical mapping of 11p15 in clone contigs.
Effects of a Portuguese social-emotional learning program on the competencies of elementary school students

Abstract:Introduction: It is widely recognized that socio-emotional learning (SEL) interventions can contribute to supporting students' positive development of socio-emotional skills (SES) and positive relationships with peers and teachers. Thus, interest in promoting students' SES through universal evidence-based programs is spreading around the world, including in Portuguese schools. Methods: This quasi-experimental study examines the efficacy of a SEL classroom-based program, infused into the curriculum, on students' communication, self-regulation, and classroom peer relationships. Participants included 208 third- to fourth-grade students from three Portuguese public elementary schools: 143 in the intervention group (54.5% boys; Mage = 8.72; SD = 0.61); 65 in the comparison group (52.3% boys; Mage = 8.66; SD = 0.59). Measures included: Study on Social and Emotional Skills, parent, child, and teacher versions; and Classroom Peer Context Questionnaire, completed by students. The study followed a pre- and post-test design, with a 16-week intervention. Results: For the overall participants, results show a positive effect of the program on students' assertiveness (family report), peer conflict and peer cooperation. Effects were analyzed separately by school grade. A statistically significant positive effect of the program on third-grade students' assertiveness and sociability was found. For fourth-grade students, a positive effect was found on - emotional control). classroom conflicts, isolation, cooperation and cohesion behaviors. Discussion: These positive effects support the expansion of universal interventions when aiming at strengthening SEL in Portuguese school settings, underlining the relevance of embedding SEL into the curricula and daily practices at schools.
