Abstract:Introduction: Self-medication is using drugs to treat self-diagnosed signs or symptoms of oneself or others. Being closer to pharmacology and pathology, medical students have been more prone to it. The study aimed to determine the prevalence of self-medication among basic sciences medical students in a tertiary care centre in Kathmandu. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among basic science students from 15 February 2023 to 14 March 2023 after obtaining ethical approval from the Institutional Review Committee (Reference number: 04122022/04). A convenience sampling method was used. Data were collected online and analysed. Point estimate at 95% confidence interval was calculated.Results: Among 322 basic science medical students the prevalence of self-medication was 218 (67.70%) (64.81–70.59 at 95% Confidence Interval). Fever was the most common condition treated by self-medication 106 (48.62%) and paracetamol was the most common medication 93 (42.66%). Of those who engaged in self-medication, 97 (44.50%) did so to save time. Moreover, within this group, 67 (30.73%) experienced adverse drug reactions, leading 37 (16.97%) of these students to visit a private doctor. Additionally, 138 (63.30%) refrained from prescribing medication to their family and friends. Conclusions: Self-medication among basic science medical students was found to be lower in comparison to other studies done in similar settings.

Abstract:Background: Self-medication (SM) is practiced throughout the world and although it has known benefits, it is being abused mostly by the medical students community. Hence, this study was conducted to assess the knowledge of 1st-year MBBS regarding various aspects of SM such as the most commonly used drugs and its side effects. Aim and Objective: The aim of the study was to study the pattern of SM among 1st-year medical students and to improve pharmacovigilace and drug safety. Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional study done among 1st-year MBBS students aged 19–21 years of Sri Siddartha Medical College and Hospital, Tumkur. This was carried out after the approval from the Institutional Ethics Committee. A modified questionnaire was circulated to 150 1st-year MBBS students who voluntarily participated and who’s consent was taken to carry out this study, through Google Forms. Results: Results show that 61% of self-medicate with the major reason being previous exposure. About 51% are fully aware of the medication and its side effects while 44% are partly aware. About 37% have reported that they do not self-medicate due to risk of adverse effects and 25% do not self-medicate due to reasons such as lack of knowledge, awareness, and risk of using the incorrect drugs. Conclusions: This shows that SM is prevalent among 1st-year medical students and more insight and clinical exposure regarding the drugs is needed for cautious practice. Hence, SM is an essential part of self-care as per the WHO but more knowledge and awareness is needed which is acquired through the MBBS course. This can help reduce the risk of experiencing adverse effects.

Abstract:Introduction: Self-medication (SM) is a common practice worldwide, and the irrational use of drugs is a cause of concern. Self-medication has various forms, including taking medications without a physician's prescription, using a previous prescription for a similar condition, or using drugs obtainable at home without getting a physician's advice. The youth are highly influenced by the media and the internet, which promote SM behavior. Aims and objectives: To determine the knowledge and perceptions of SM in Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) students in all professional years, including interns in Acharya Shri Chander College of Medical Sciences (ASCOMS) and Hospital, Jammu. Material and methods: The present study was conducted at ASCOMS Hospital, Jammu. A total of 200 students of MBBS were included in the study. A self-structured questionnaire was used to assess the knowledge and awareness level. The collected data were recorded in a Microsoft Excel sheet (Microsoft Corp., Redmond, WA) and analyzed with the help of IBM SPSS Statistics software for Windows, version 21.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY). Result: The present study reveals that 60% of the subjects were males and 65% of the students practiced SM, which indicates that SM is highly prevalent amongst MBBS students. It was observed that minor illness and quick relief were the major reasons for SM. Further, headache, cold/cough, and fever were the major indications for SM, whereas antipyretics and analgesics were the most commonly used drugs for SM. Conclusion: The present study concluded that there was a high prevalence of SM practice among medical students, especially among females. However, the knowledge and perceptions of SM were not insufficient.

Abstract:The study of the stochastic properties of enzyme reactions is extremely valuable for understanding life processes. In this paper, we present a new approach for the computation of probability distributions in enzyme reaction networks. By employing system theory and block diagrams, the new approach offers a visible and convenient way to decompose a complicated network into simpler sub-networks and vice versa. An enzyme catalyst reaction is analyzed and the results for both the transient and steady states of the reaction are obtained.

Major problems associated with self-medication include wastage of resources, increased resistance of pathogens, and adverse drug reactions. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess self-medication practices and associated factors among undergraduate Wollo University students in Northeast Ethiopia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 341 undergraduate university students using a pretested and self-administered questionnaire from January to February 2019. Simple random sampling was used to select study participants. Data were collected using the self-administered questionnaire and analyzed with SPSS version 20. Multiple logistic regression was employed in data analysis, with P < 0.05 considered statistically significant. Results: The prevalence of self-medication in this study was 64.98%. Mildness of disease (57, 34.13%) and dissatisfaction with health-care services, (44, 26.34%) were the main reasons for self-medication practice. The most common types of diseases for self-medication were headache (80, 47.9%), gastrointestinal infections (74, 44.31%), and respiratory tract infections (48, 28.74%). Analgesics (94, 56.28%) and antibiotics (60, 35.9%) were the leading classes of medicine used in self-medication. Multivariate regression analysis indicated that agriculture students (AOR 0.163, 95% CI 0.049– 0.545) were 84% less likely to practice self-medication than medicine and health-science students. Conclusion: This study revealed that self-medication practices are common among study participants and significantly associated with their field of study. Awareness promotion on the risk of inappropriate self-medication for university students is highly recommended. Keywords: self-medication practices, undergraduate university students, Ethiopia

Abstract:Background: The practice of self medication is not recommended by the WHO in the context of COVID-19. 2 Inappropriate self medication has also shown to lead to adverse drug reactions.3,4 The psychological distress due to the pandemic adds to the incidences of unnecessary and irrational self medication. But practice of self medication seems to be high among doctors and medical students. The study tries to look into the factors associated with self medication. A cross sectional study done on 400 Doctors Methods: (including faculty members, junior residents and interns) in a medical college hospital in West Bengal, a questionnaire based study. Results: Majority of the subjects who suffered from COVID 19 took self medication for treatment but majority of the self medication did not follow WHO or ICMR guideline, rather they used self medication based on their personal experience or the prescription done by other doctors. As a result, number of medicine consumption was high during self medication, as compared to WHO or ICMR guidelines. Majority of the subjects were not aware about possible adverse effects of all the drugs. Almost 25% subjects had suffered from some mild adverse drug reaction , mostly diarrhea and rashes. There was no serious adverse reaction due to self medication. Self medication among doctors and medical undergraduates in this institute was Conclusions: high. Mild symptoms in majority of them and condence about own knowledge on covid were the primary reason for self medication. But they used more medications than actually needed as per the WHO/ICMR guidelines. Majority have insufcient idea about all possible adverse effects of the drugs.

Abstract:Background: The drugs used for self-medication can have both unwanted and beneficial effects. Self-medication if used inappropriately can result in adverse effects, increased antibiotic resistance, resources wastage, drug interactions, and ill health. Among adolescent females, dysmenorrhea is one of the most common clinical conditions which effects their daily activities, physical, and emotional well-being. Furthermore, impacts negatively on their academic activities and quality of life. Therefore, practice of self-medication is very common in primary dysmenorrhea. Aims and Objectives: The aim of study is to access and evaluate practice of self-medication among medical students on primary dysmenorrhea. Materials and Methods: A questionnaire-based and cross-sectional study was conducted and female medical students of age group between 20 and 25 years were selected. A pre-validated 15 points questionnaire was used to assess the features and pain severity of dysmenorrhea. The results were taken by utilizing descriptive statistics. Results: In this study, total numbers of participants were 70 students. Dysmenorrhea was experienced in 80.02% of participants with mild degree (31.21%), moderate degree (29.29%), and with severe degree (19.7%) of dysmenorrhea. In this study, 57.34% of participants preferred for self-medication. The participants commonly used a combination of dicyclomine and mefenamic acid (68.78%) which is fixed dose combination. Medical consultation was sought only in 12.44% and 9.3% students used household remedies. Conclusion: The dysmenorrhea was common in students and they commonly practiced self-medication with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. There is need to emphasize the significance of creating awareness within students regarding adverse effects of drugs.

Abstract:Objectives: The practice of self-medication (SM) without consulting a health-care professional among the populace of both developed and developing countries like India may lead to a delay in therapeutic effectiveness. The present study was conducted to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice of SM among the general population of Gujarat. Material and Methods: An observational, cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was conducted among 488 participants between April 2021 and May 2021 to evaluate the several aspects of SM. In April 2021, this study was conducted on both the genders of 18–80 years of urban and rural areas of Gujarat. Data were analyzed for descriptive statistics. The data presented in the form of percentages using tables and figures. The responses were collected and analyzed using GraphPad v.8 and Microsoft Excel for percentage and statistical significance. Results: Prevalence of SM was 78.3%. It was found to be practiced more among the younger age group (55.32%) than the older. Graduates practiced SM more than the others ( P < 0.004). Significant association was found between its practice and residency ( P < 0.03), marital status ( P < 0.003), education ( P < 0.004), and occupation ( P < 0.0007). Fever, cough, and cold were the most common conditions noted for SM practice followed by headache. It was noticed that 63.5% participants were procured medications from pharmacy. Multivitamins, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and antibiotics were the most frequent medications used by participants. Conclusion: The prevalence of SM is alarming which causes serious health issues and needs an intervention. Planning of health awareness programs, educating people, and pharmacists are necessary for promoting rational use of medication.

Abstract:Larsen syndrome (OMIM 150250) was first described in 1950 as an entity characterized by distinct facial features and dislocations of the multiple large joint, and cleft palate, hearing loss, and spinal abnormalities were occasionally observed. The prevalence of Larsen syndrome is estimated to be one in 100,000 live births . Management of multiple large-joint dislocations often proves difficult with a tendency toward recurrence, particularly if a patient has complete dislocation of the knee .We treated a boy with the clinical phenotype of Larsen syndrome using 10 orthopedic procedures, but failed to achieve a satisfactory outcome.The aim of this report is to review the surgical course and report results of surgical treatments for this patient with 12 years of follow-up.

Abstract:This paper investigates secure communications in fixed gain untrusted relay networks. Unlike the trusted relay, an untrusted relay may be an eavesdropper and also does not have the instantaneous channel state information (CSI) of the main link. We propose a destination aided secure transmission scheme. A closed-form of achievable secrecy rate of the proposed scheme is derived and the optimal power allocation between the information signal and jamming signal is also discussed. Simulations elaborately verify our theoretical results.

Abstract:Background Self-medication (SM), a common practice globally, possesses a dual challenge of being a self-care strategy and a potential source of harm observed across all age groups. The study is being conducted to gauge the prevalence of SM of prescription drugs with their over-the-counter access, thus addressing the delicate balance between self-care and self-harm related to SM. Material and methods This ongoing convergent parallel mixed method study with quantitative and qualitative components will be conducted on a sample size of 180 subjects aged more than 18 years from an urban community. For the quantitative component, a semi-structured questionnaire will assess the prevalence of SM, types of medications used, reasons for self-medicating, and socio-demographic factors influencing these practices. Concurrently, qualitative interviews delve deeper into the beliefs shaping SM practices. Sampling will be purposive to capture diverse perspectives, with data analyzed using statistical tools. Results This study protocol will offer a comprehensive understanding of the prevalence and determinants of SM practices. The quantitative data provide numerical insights into SM trends, while the qualitative findings elucidate the nuanced factors driving individuals' SM choices. Conclusions A multifaceted view of SM practices will be provided, aiding in developing interventions to promote safe and effective self-care while mitigating the risks of self-harm through SM. Anticipated findings can include a widespread prevalence of SM amongst the general urban populace. Significant associations can also be expected to be found with various independent variables. The results will be instrumental in informing public health policies and healthcare practices toward enhancing patient safety and well-being.

Abstract:Milk has a potent reducing environment with an important quantity of sugar levels. In the current study β-casein was glycated in the presence of D-glucose and sodium cyanoborohydride as a reducing agent. Then, the reduced glucitol adduct of β-casein was used for the structural and functional analyses using different spectroscopic techniques. The results of fluorescence and far ultraviolet circular dichroism assessments suggest important structural alteration upon non-enzymatic glycation of β-casein. In addition, the chaperone activity, micellization properties and antioxidant activity of this protein were altered upon glucose modification. Also, as a result of reduced glycation, the allergenicity profile of this protein remained largely unchanged. Additional to its energetic and nutritional values, β-casein has important functional properties. The native structure of this protein is important to perform accurately its biological functions. Non-enzymatic glycation under reducing state was capable to alter both structural and functional aspects of β-casein. Due to effective reducing environment and significant quantity of reducing sugar of human milk, similar structural and functional alterations are most likely to occur upon reducing glycation of β-casein in vivo. Also, these changes might be even intensified during chronic hyperglycemia in diabetic mothers.

Abstract:Background: Self-medication among university students is becoming a health concern, especially during examinations and stress. This pattern of medication use among students could lead to adverse health consequences if it is not addressed and tackled. Thus, this study investigated the most associated factors with this practice among students. Methods: An observational cross-sectional study was conducted among university students in Northern Borders Province, Saudi Arabia. A total of 220 students were selected and took part in the survey. Data was collected through a self-administered questionnaire. The survey was distributed among participants to answer five sections: demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, health status problems, satisfaction with academic performance, and self-medication questions. The content validity was tested using a pilot sample of 30 students. The descriptive, univariate, and multivariate analyses were conducted using the Statistical Package for Social Science program. Results: In the present sample of university students, the response rate was 100%. Approximately one-third reported using medications without prescriptions, and 83% of them have used medications three times at most during the past 12 months. Headache was the most common reason for use (59%), followed by fever (20%). Adjusted multivariate analysis showed that students who were 21-24 years of age (OR = 3.79, 95% CI = 1.21-11.82), female (OR = 2.43, 95% CI = 1.03-5.72), and living alone in private housing (OR = 3.62, 95% CI = 1.32-9.90) were at high risk of self-medication as compared to their counterparts. However, students in the last years of college (fourth (OR = 0.14, 95% CI = 0.03-0.62), fifth (OR = 0.21, 95% CI = 0.05-0.95), sixth (OR = 0.05, 95% CI = 0.01-0.35)) were at lower risk as compared to their counterparts. Conclusion: The study found that self-medication was common among university students, with higher rates among those who were 21-24 years old, female, and living alone in private housing, but lower rates among students in the later years of college. Educational programs and awareness campaigns should target students who are at higher risk of practicing self-medication to avoid misuse of over-the-counter medications.

Abstract:The ageing population is increasingly using self-medication due to comorbidities. Most people who self-medicate use over-the-counter (OTC) medications bought from private pharmacies as their primary source of medicine. The use of self-medication may lead to an increased risk of unfavourable health outcomes. People over the age of 65 are more vulnerable to adverse drug reactions (ADRs). Our article aims to gain insights into self-medication in the geriatric population. We searched the Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE) via Google Scholar and PubMed databases. The PubMed search technique was customised for each database and was as follows: (self-medication (Title/Abstract)) AND (geriatric (Title/Abstract) OR elderly (Title/Abstract) OR old (Title/Abstract)). Also, we used other databases like the World Health Organization (WHO), the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare(MOHFW) under the Government of India, etc. The keywords used for the search strategy were 'over-the-counter drugs', adverse drug reactions', self-prescribed drugs', and non-prescription drugs'. Articles that were not relevant to the review topic are excluded. Through our review, we found that most geriatric people use self-medication because of their previous experience with that medication, a lack of seriousness regarding the consequences of using OTC medications, and suggestions from family members, friends, or neighbours. Abdominal pain, headache, cough, joint pain, and fever are the conditions for which the geriatric age group mainly uses self-medication. The primary source of self-medication is directly from the pharmacy, and the most commonly consumed drug for self-medication is analgesics. Most people know about the risks associated with self-medication. However, people continue to participate in this risky self-medication behaviour to get quick relief from a mild illness. This issue can be resolved by providing such a group with free consultations or medical insurance. Pharmacists' role in self-medication is also important. Counselling regarding the hazards of self-medication and selling the drugs to consumers without a doctor's prescription must be avoided.

Abstract:Background: Self-medication is a globally prevalent practice, with varying degrees of awareness and regulation across different regions. In developing countries like Pakistan, the practice poses significant public health challenges, including the risk of medication misuse and antibiotic resistance. Jamshoro, a city with a diverse demographic and educational landscape, provides a unique setting to explore the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of self-medication among its residents. Objective: This study aimed to assess the extent of self-medication practices among the adult population in Jamshoro, focusing on their knowledge, attitudes, and the types of medications commonly used. It sought to identify potential risks associated with self-medication and propose recommendations for safer practices. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted from February to April 2023, involving 400 participants selected through non-probability convenience sampling. The survey encompassed questions related to demographic information, knowledge about self-medication, attitudes towards its practice, and the frequency and types of medications used. Data were collected using both online questionnaires distributed via Google Forms and face-to-face interviews, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of self-medication behaviors. Ethical approval was obtained from the Research Ethics Committee of Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS), with the study adhering to the Helsinki Declaration's ethical standards. Data analysis was performed using SPSS Version 25, utilizing descriptive statistics to summarize findings. Results: The majority of respondents were male (55.5%) and undergraduates (64.5%), with students representing 66% of the sample. A significant portion (87.3%) reported a lack of knowledge regarding self-medication, and 90.3% had never taken medication without a physician’s prescription. About 64% were aware of the difference between over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription drugs, and 82.5% recognized the risk of antibiotic resistance. Self-medication practices were infrequent among participants, with 32.5% engaging in it only occasionally. The study also found a predominant preference for private healthcare facilities (68.5%) over public ones. Conclusion: The findings indicate a substantial knowledge gap regarding self-medication among the population of Jamshoro, despite a general tendency to consult healthcare professionals for medical issues. There is a critical need for public health initiatives to educate the community on safe medication practices, the risks of antibiotic resistance, and the importance of adhering to prescribed treatments.

Abstract:Background. The prevalence of self-medication has increased dramatically worldwide. This study was conducted to determine the reasons for self-medication from the perspective of Iranian nursing students. Methods. This qualitative study was conducted using the content analysis method. Fifteen nursing students were selected by the purposeful sampling method. Data were collected by in-depth semistructured interviews. Qualitative content analysis method was used for data analysis. The MAXQDA software was used for data management. Results. Data saturation was achieved with fifteen interviews with nine women and six men, with a mean age of 26.5 ± 4.8 years. The reasons for self-medication were explained in five categories and fifteen subcategories. Some of the reasons for self-medication were having medication information, having previous experience, easy access to medicine, lack of enough time, access to medical staff, cost of a doctor’s visit, inadequate respect for patient privacy, pharmaceutical advertising in the media, and information explosion. Discussion. Several factors are involved in self-medication. Given the dangers of self-medication, health policymakers must adopt strict policies for pharmacies that sell drugs without a prescription. Furthermore, it is helpful to run training courses on self-medication risks for students.
Massive Misuse of Antibiotics by University Students in All Regions of China: Implications for National Policy

Abstract:Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the greatest threats to global health this century. The primary cause of AMR is antibiotic misuse, especially routine use of antibiotics for self-limiting illnesses. This study aimed to explore behaviours related to antibiotic use in university students across China. An electronic questionnaire was distributed at a major university in each of the six regions. A cluster random sampling method was adopted. The χ2 test and logistic regression were used to assess the relationship between knowledge and behaviour. A total of 11,192 students completed the questionnaire. In the past month, 3337 students (29.8%) reported a self-limiting illness, of whom 913 (27.3%) saw a doctor, 600 (65.7%) of whom were prescribed antibiotics [190 (31.7%) by infusion]; 136 students (22.7%) asked for and received antibiotics. Of the 1711 students (51.3%) who treated themselves, 507 (29.6%) self-medicated with antibiotics. In the past year, 23.0% of students had used antibiotics as prophylaxis, 63.1% kept a personal stock of antibiotics and 56.0% had bought antibiotics at a drugstore (two-thirds without a prescription). Students with lower knowledge scores about antibiotics were significantly more likely to see a doctor, be prescribed with antibiotics, self-medicate with antibiotics, and use antibiotics prophylactically. This massive misuse of antibiotics for self-limiting illnesses by well-educated young adults is a serious concern. A national campaign is urgently required to address rational prescribing of antibiotics by doctors, enforce existing restrictions on over-the-counter sale of antibiotics, and educate the general public about antibiotics and the management of self-limiting illnesses.
Knowledge attitude and convenience on self-medication practices among university students in Bangladesh exploration using structural equation modeling approach

Abstract:Self-medication is a prevalent practice among university students globally and is a significant public health concern. However, previous research has been limited in scope, focusing primarily on adolescents or the general public, leaving a gap in understanding the causal relationships associated with self-medication; thus, this study aimed to investigate the factors influencing self-medication practices among university students in Bangladesh by developing a comprehensive causal model. Data from 417 students across five public universities were collected using the simple random walk technique by a team of 10 members. The study utilized constructs of knowledge, attitude, and convenience related to self-medication as independent variables, while self-medication practice as the dependent variable. One-way ANOVA and structural equation modeling (SEM) were employed to develop a causal model of self-medication practice among university students in Bangladesh. The findings revealed that students with better medication knowledge and adverse drug reactions (ADRs) were more likely to practice self-medication. A positive attitude towards self-medication and ADRs was also significantly associated with higher self-medication practice scores. Additionally, those who perceived self-medication as convenient and prescribed medication as inconvenient had higher self-medication practice scores. The attitude towards self-medication had the most substantial negative effect on self-medication practice, followed by the inconvenience of prescribed medication and the convenience of self-medication. The model explained 87% of the variance in self-medication practice, indicating a good fit for the data. University students in Bangladesh possess intermediate knowledge of medication and primary knowledge of ADRs. They exhibit a positive attitude towards self-medication and ADRs. Physical convenience favors self-medication, while the inconvenience of prescribed medication contributes to its lower preference. Policymakers should focus on evidence-based guidelines to reduce the extent of unnecessary self-medication practice and to enhance the quantity and accessibility of prescribed medications to address the issue effectively.

Abstract:Objectives: Self-medication with antibiotics (SMA) is a serious global health problem. We sought to investigate SMA behaviors and risk factors among Chinese university students, and further explore the association between SMA practices and adverse drug events (ADEs).Study design: Cross-sectional study.Methods: An online survey was conducted at Jiangsu University (JSU) in eastern China in July 2011 using a pretested questionnaire.Results: Out of 2608 website visitors, 1086 participated in the survey (response rate: 41.6%), 426 respondents were excluded for not being a JSU student or repeat participation, 660 (2.2% of JSU students) were included in analysis, and 316 students (47.9%) had a lifetime history of SMA. Among self-treated students, 43.5% believed that antibiotic was suitable for viral infections, 65.9% had more than one SMA episode in the previous year, 73.5% self-medicated with at least two different antibiotics, 57.1% and 64.4% changed antibiotic dosage and antibiotics during the course, respectively. Female gender, older age, and prior knowledge of antibiotics (PKA) were identified as independent risk factors of SMA. There was no difference between students with and without PKA regarding SMA frequency, use of polyantibiotics, and switching antibiotic dosage or antibiotics. ADEs happened to 13.3% of self-medicated students. Frequent change of dosage and simultaneous use of the same antibiotic with different names were independent risk practices associated with an ADE.Conclusions: Our findings substantiate high SMA prevalence among Chinese university students. Older age and PKA are independent SMA risk factors common to Chinese university students and female gender is exclusive SMA risk factor for JSU students. Poor SMA practices are associated with ADEs. Strict regulations on antibiotic sales and public education reinforced by further health care reform are recommended. (C) 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:Introduction: Self-medication with antibiotics (SMA) is a widespread problem in developing nations, including Tanzania. Methods: This study compared knowledge, attitudes, practices, and factors influencing antibiotic SMA among medical and non-medical students. Results: The prevalence of SMA among medical students was 49.1% and 59.2% among non-medical students, respectively. The mean knowledge score of medical students (6.4) was significantly higher ( p -value <0.001) than that of non-medical students (5.6). The main factors influencing SMA practices were the availability of antibiotics without a prescription, easy access to pharmacies, and a lack of knowledge about the risks of SMA. This experience was pivotal in influencing medical students to take antibiotics, with a substantial proportion of 67.5% as opposed to 59.4% of non-medical students. Medical students were 1.6 times more likely to self-medicate with antibiotics than non-medical students (Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR): 1.6; 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 1.2–2.3, p -value = 0.004). Age was also associated with self-medication, with an AOR of 1.1 (95% CI: 1.04–1.2, p -value = 0.006) per year increase in age. Additionally, attitude was associated with self-medication, with an AOR of 1.05 (95% CI: 1.04–1.1, p -value = 0.001) per unit increase in attitude score. Discussion: No significant associations were found between sex, marital status, having children, year of study, knowledge score, and self-medication with antibiotics. This study emphasizes the importance of educational interventions and public awareness campaigns to promote antimicrobial stewardship, appropriate antibiotic use, and preventing pharmacies from dispensing antibiotics without a prescription.
