Abstract:Magnetic skyrmions are versatile topological excitations that can be used as nonvolatile information carriers. The confinement of skyrmions in channels is fundamental for any application based on the accumulation and transport of skyrmions. Here, we report a method that allows effective position control of skyrmions in designed channels by engineered energy barriers and wells, which is realized in a magnetic multilayer film by harnessing the boundaries of patterns with modified magnetic properties. We experimentally and computationally demonstrate that skyrmions can be attracted or repelled by the boundaries of areas with modified perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. By fabricating square and stripe patterns with modified magnetic properties, we show the possibility of building reliable channels for confinement, accumulation, and transport of skyrmions, which effectively protect skyrmions from being destroyed at the device edges. Our results are useful for the design of spintronic applications using either static or dynamic skyrmions.
Current-induced Dynamics of Isolated Antiferromagnetic Antiskyrmion and Antiskyrmionium

Abstract:Topologically stable spin structures known as magnetic antiskyrmions spontaneously emerge in magnets with broken in-plane rotation symmetry when current is injected. While many studies have focused on their behaviors in ferromagnetic (FM) materials, limited attention has been paid to antiskyrmions in their antiferromagnetic (AFM) counterparts. In spintronic applications, the Magnus force of an AFM antiskyrmion cancels out completely due to its comparable but opposite sign spin pattern on the A and B sublattices in the AFM bipartite system, while an FM antiskyrmion exhibits transverse motion when driven by the currents, causing limitations to antiskyrmion motion velocity and information loss when the antiskyrmion is annihilated at the edges of racetracks. Here, we report the nucleation and dynamics of an isolated AFM antiskyrmion and antiskyrmionium induced by current analytically and numerically. We demonstrate how AFM antiskyrmions and antiskyrmioniums are stabilized and manipulated with the same velocity by spin transfer torques and with different velocities by spin-orbit torques. Under suitable conditions, the AFM antiskyrmion and antiskyrmionium can be driven at velocities as high as 6 km/s without the skyrmion Hall effect, far greater than their ferromagnetic counterparts. Furthermore, the critical driving current density of the AFM antiskyrmion (antiskyrmionium) is much larger than that of the FM antiskyrmion (antiskyrmionium). Our results contribute to the development of antiferromagnetic antiskyrmions and antiskyrmioniums by shedding light on their stabilization and dynamics.
Stabilization and Current-Induced Motion of Antiskyrmion in the Presence of Anisotropic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction

Abstract:Topological defects in magnetism have attracted great attention due to fundamental research interests and potential novel spintronics applications. Rich examples of topological defects can be found in nanoscale nonuniform spin textures, such as monopoles, domain walls, vortices, and skyrmions. Recently, skyrmions stabilized by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction have been studied extensively. However, the stabilization of antiskyrmions is less straightforward. Here, using numerical simulations we demonstrate that antiskyrmions can be a stable spin configuration in the presence of anisotropic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We find current-driven antiskyrmion motion that has a transverse component, namely, the antiskyrmion Hall effect. The antiskyrmion gyroconstant is opposite to that for skyrmion, which allows the current-driven propagation of coupled skyrmion-antiskyrmion pairs without an apparent skyrmion Hall effect. The antiskyrmion Hall angle strongly depends on the current direction, and a zero antiskyrmion Hall angle can be achieved at a critic current direction. These results open up possibilities to tailor the spin topology in nanoscale magnetism, which may be useful in the emerging field of skyrmionics.
Dynamic transition of current-driven single-skyrmion motion in a room-temperature chiral-lattice magnet

Abstract:Driving and controlling single-skyrmion motion promises skyrmion-based spintronic applications. Recently progress has been made in moving skyrmionic bubbles in thin-film heterostructures and low-temperature chiral skyrmions in the FeGe helimagnet by electric current. Here, we report the motion tracking and control of a single skyrmion at room temperature in the chiral-lattice magnet Co9Zn9Mn2 using nanosecond current pulses. We have directly observed that the skyrmion Hall motion reverses its direction upon the reversal of skyrmion topological number using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. Systematic measurements of the single-skyrmion trace as a function of electric current reveal a dynamic transition from the static pinned state to the linear flow motion via a creep event, in agreement with the theoretical prediction. We have clarified the role of skyrmion pinning and evaluated the intrinsic skyrmion Hall angle and the skyrmion velocity in the course of the dynamic transition. Our results pave a way to skyrmion applications in spintronic devices.
Deterministic generation of skyrmions and antiskyrmions by electric current

Abstract:Magnetic skyrmions are nanoscale spin whirlpools that promise breakthroughs in future spintronic applications. Controlled generation of magnetic skyrmions by electric current is crucial for this purpose. While previous studies have demonstrated this operation, the topological charge of the generated skyrmions is determined by the direction of the external magnetic fields, thus is fixed. Here, we report the current-induced skyrmions creation in a chiral magnet FeGe nanostructure by using the \emph{in-situ} Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. We show that magnetic skyrmions or antiskyrmions can be both transferred from the magnetic helical ground state simply by controlling the direction of the current flow at zero magnetic field. The force analysis and symmetry consideration, backed up by micromagnetic simulations, well explain the experimental results, where magnetic skyrmions or antiskyrmions are created due to the edge instability of the helical state in the presence of spin transfer torque. The on-demand generation of skyrmions and control of their topology by electric current without the need of magnetic field will enable novel purely electric-controlled skyrmion devices.

Abstract:The dynamics of antiferromagnets is a current hot topic in condensed matter physics and spintronics. However, the dynamics of insulating antiferromagnets cannot be excited by an electric current, which is a method usually used to manipulate ferromagnetic metals. Here, we propose to use the voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy gradient as an excitation source to manipulate insulating antiferromagnetic textures. We analytically and numerically study the dynamics of an antiferromagnetic skyrmion driven by a magnetic anisotropy gradient. Our analytical calculations demonstrate that such a magnetic anisotropy gradient can effectively drive an antiferromagnetic skyrmion towards the area of lower magnetic anisotropy. The micromagnetic simulations are in good agreement with our analytical solution. Furthermore, the magnetic anisotropy gradient induced velocity of an antiferromagnetic skyrmion is compared with that of a ferromagnetic skyrmion. Our results are useful for the understanding of antiferromagnetic skyrmion dynamics and may open a new way for the design of antiferromagnetic spintronic devices.

Abstract:Nowadays, the concept of non-trivial topological protection and the nanoscale size of nanomagnetic particles constitute a major area of research. Due to topological protection stability, nanoscale size, and the requirement of low spin current density for motion, skyrmions have attracted great attention in next-generation spintronic devices as robust information carriers. We study the motion of an isolated magnetic skyrmion with induced interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (iDMI) instigated by spin waves and driven by spin current with variation in different parameters in a nanotrack of finite length using micromagnetic simulations. It is found that the magnetic skyrmion moves in the same direction as the direction of propagation of the spin waves. The skyrmion initially experiences an acceleration in its motion; thereafter, the velocity decreases exponentially. The motion of the magnetic skyrmion initiates as the momentum of the spin wave gets transferred to it. The motion of the magnetic skyrmion is found to be significantly dependent on the variation of parameters like frequency and amplitude of the incident spin waves, as well as the damping parameter and the strength of the applied spin-polarized current. The results obtained in this work could become useful to design skyrmion-based spintronic information-carrying and storage devices.

Abstract:Magnetic skyrmions are topological spin textures that appear in magnets with broken spatial inversion symmetry as a consequence of competition between the ferromagnetic exchange interactions and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in a magnetic field. In the research of spintronics, the current-driven dynamics of skyrmions has been extensively studied aiming at their applications to next-generation spintronic devices. However, current-induced skyrmion motion exhibits diverse behaviors depending on various factors and conditions such as the type of skyrmion, driving mechanism, system geometry, direction of applied current, and type of the magnet. While this variety attracts enormous research interest of fundamental science and enriches the possibilities of technical applications, it is also a source of difficulty and complexity that hinders their comprehensive understandings. In this article, we discuss fundamental and systematic theoretical descriptions of current-induced motion of skyrmions driven by the spin-transfer torque and the spin-orbit torque. Specifically, we theoretically describe the behaviors of current-driven skyrmions depending on the factors and conditions mentioned above by means of analyses using the Thiele equation. Furthermore, the results of the analytical theory are visually demonstrated and quantitatively confirmed by micromagnetic simulations using the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert-Slonczewski equation. In particular, we discuss dependence of the direction and velocity of motion on the type of skyrmion (Bloch type and Néel type), the system geometry (thin plate and nanotrack), the direction of applied current (length and width direction of the nanotrack), and the type of magnet (ferromagnet and antiferromagnet). The comprehensive theory provided by this article is expected to contribute significantly to research on the manipulation and control of magnetic skyrmions by electric currents for future spintronics applications.spintronics applications.

Real-space determination of the isolated magnetic skyrmion deformation under electric current flow

Abstract:The manipulation and control of electron spins, the fundamental building blocks of magnetic domains and spin textures, are at the core of spintronics. Of particular interest is the effect of the electric current on topological magnetic skyrmions, such as the current-induced deformation of isolated skyrmions. The deformation has consequences ranging from perturbed dynamics to modified packing configurations. In this study, we measured the current-driven real-space deformation of isolated, pinned skyrmions within Co10Zn10 at room temperature. We observed that the skyrmions are surprisingly soft, readily deforming during electric current application into an elliptical shape with a well-defined deformation axis (semimajor axis). We found that this axis rotates unidirectionally toward the current direction irrespective of electric current polarity and that the elliptical deformation reverses back upon current termination. We quantified the average distortion δ, which increased by ∼90% during the largest applied current density |j| = 8.46 ×109 A/m2 when compared with the skyrmion's intrinsic shape ([Formula: see text]). Additionally, we demonstrated an approximately 120% average skyrmion core size expansion during current application, highlighting the skyrmions' inherent topological protection. This evaluation of in situ electric current-induced skyrmion deformation paints a clearer picture of spin-polarized electron-skyrmion interactions and may prove essential in designing spintronic devices.

Abstract:Magnetic skyrmions are topologically protected spin textures that exhibit fascinating physical behaviours and large potential in highly energy-efficient spintronic device applications. The main obstacles so far are that skyrmions have been observed in only a few exotic materials and at low temperatures, and fast current-driven motion of individual skyrmions has not yet been achieved. Here, we report the observation of stable magnetic skyrmions at room temperature in ultrathin transition metal ferromagnets with magnetic transmission soft X-ray microscopy. We demonstrate the ability to generate stable skyrmion lattices and drive trains of individual skyrmions by short current pulses along a magnetic racetrack at speeds exceeding 100 m s(-1) as required for applications. Our findings provide experimental evidence of recent predictions and open the door to room-temperature skyrmion spintronics in robust thin-film heterostructures.

Abstract:Magnetic skyrmions are topological magnetic textures that hold great promise as nanoscale bits of information in memory and logic devices. Although room-temperature ferromagnetic skyrmions and their current-induced manipulation have been demonstrated, their velocity has been limited to about 100 meters per second. In addition, their dynamics are perturbed by the skyrmion Hall effect, a motion transverse to the current direction caused by the skyrmion topological charge. Here, we show that skyrmions in compensated synthetic antiferromagnets can be moved by current along the current direction at velocities of up to 900 meters per second. This can be explained by the cancellation of the net topological charge leading to a vanishing skyrmion Hall effect. Our results open an important path toward the realization of logic and memory devices based on the fast manipulation of skyrmions in tracks.

Abstract:The current-driven movement of magnetic skyrmions along a nanostripe is essential for the advancement and functionality of a new category of spintronic devices resembling racetracks. Despite extensive research into skyrmion dynamics, experimental verification of current-induced motion of ultra-small skyrmions within an ultrathin nanostripe is still pending. Here, we unveil the motion of individual 80 nm-size skyrmions in an FeGe track with an ultrathin width of 100 nm. The skyrmions can move steadily along the track over a broad range of current densities by using controlled pulse durations of as low as 2 ns. The potential landscape, arising from the magnetic edge twists in such a geometrically confined system, introduces skyrmion inertia and ensures efficient motion with a vanishing skyrmion Hall angle. Our results showcase the steady motion of skyrmions in an ultrathin track, offering a practical pathway for implementing skyrmion-based spintronic devices.

Abstract:Magnetic skyrmions promise breakthroughs in future memory and computing devices due to their inherent stability and small size. Their creation and current driven motion have been recently observed at room temperature, but the key mechanisms of their formation are not yet well-understood. Here it is shown that in heavy metal/ferromagnet heterostructures, pulsed currents can drive morphological transitions between labyrinth-like, stripe-like, and skyrmionic states. Using high-resolution X-ray microscopy, the spin texture evolution with temperature and magnetic field is imaged and it is demonstrated that with transient Joule heating, topological charges can be injected into the system, driving it across the stripe-skyrmion boundary. The observations are explained through atomistic spin dynamic and micromagnetic simulations that reveal a crossover to a global skyrmionic ground state above a threshold magnetic field, which is found to decrease with increasing temperature. It is demonstrated how by tuning the phase stability, one can reliably generate skyrmions by short current pulses and stabilize them at zero field, providing new means to create and manipulate spin textures in engineered chiral ferromagnets.

Abstract:Introduction: Magnetic skyrmions hold great promise for realizing compact and stable memory devices that can be manipulated at very low energy costs via electronic current densities. Methods: In this work, we extend a recently introduced method to describe classical skyrmion textures coupled to dynamical itinerant electrons. In this scheme, the electron dynamics is described via nonequilibrium Green's function (NEGF) within the generalized Kadanoff–Baym ansatz, and the classical spins are treated via the Landau–Lifshitz–Gilbert equation. Here, the framework is extended to open systems by the introduction of a non-interacting approximation to the collision integral of NEGFs. This, in turn, allows us to perform computations of the real-time response of skyrmions to electronic currents in large quantum systems coupled to electronic reservoirs, which exhibit linear scaling in the number of time steps. We use this approach to investigate how electronic spin currents and dilute spin disorder affect skyrmion transport and the skyrmion Hall drift. Results: Our results show that the skyrmion dynamics is sensitive to a specific form of the spin disorder, such that different disorder configurations lead to qualitatively different skyrmion trajectories for the same applied bias. Discussion: This sensitivity arises from the local spin dynamics around the magnetic impurities, a feature that is expected not to be well-captured by phenomenological or spin-only descriptions. At the same time, our findings illustrate the potential of engineering microscopic impurity patterns to steer skyrmion trajectories.

Dynamic transition and Galilean relativity of current-driven skyrmions

Abstract:The coupling of conduction electrons and magnetic textures leads to quantum transport phenomena described by the language of emergent electromagnetic fields [1-3]. For magnetic skyrmions, spin-swirling particle-like objects, an emergent magnetic field is produced by their topological winding [4-6], resulting in the conduction electrons exhibiting the topological Hall effect (THE) [7]. When the skyrmion lattice (SkL) acquires a drift velocity under conduction electron flow, an emergent electric field is also generated [8,9]. The resulting emergent electrodynamics dictate the magnitude of the THE via the relative motion of SkL and conduction electrons. Here, we report the emergent electrodynamics induced by SkL motion in Gd$_2$PdSi$_3$, facilitated by its giant THE [10,11]. With increasing current excitation, we observe the dynamic transition of the SkL motion from the pinned to creep regime and finally to the flow regime, where the THE is totally suppressed. We argue that the Galilean relativity required for the total cancellation of the THE can be generically recovered in the flow regime, even in complex multiband systems such as the present compound. Moreover, the observed THE voltages are large enough to enable real-time measurement of the SkL velocity-current profile, which reveals the inertial-like motion of the SkL in the creep regime, appearing as current-hysteretic behavior of the skyrmion velocity.

Formation and Control of Zero-Field Antiskyrmions in Confining Geometries

Abstract:Magnetic skyrmions and antiskyrmions have attracted much interest owing to their topological features and spintronic functionalities. In contrast to skyrmions, the generation of antiskyrmions relies on tunning both the magnitude and direction of the external magnetic field. Here, it is reported that antiskyrmions can be efficiently created via quenching and robustly persist at zero field in the Fe1.9 Ni0.9 Pd0.2 P magnet with the S4 -symmetry. It is demonstrated that well-ordered antiskyrmions form in a square lattice in a confining micrometer-scale square geometry, while the antiskyrmion lattice distorts in triangular, circular, or rotated-square geometry; the distortion depends on the relative configuration between sample edges and the two q-vectors arising from the anisotropic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, in good agreement with micromagnetic simulations. It is also characterized transformations from antiskyrmions to skyrmions and nontopological bubbles at different directions and values of external field. These results demonstrate a roadmap for generating and controlling antiskyrmions in a confining geometry.

Abstract:Magnetic skyrmions, as spintronic information carriers, are promising for next-generation spin logic and memory devices. For such skyrmion-based devices, effective control of skyrmion nucleation and controllable motion in the nanotrack are of great importance. The ion irradiation process can modify magnetic properties, such as perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) and Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction (DMI), at the nanoscale, which can be used to reduce the design complexity of devices. In this study, a nanoregion without PMA in the nanotrack is adopted as a skyrmion nucleation seed and a current-driven highly efficient, in-line, and on-demand skyrmion nucleation schematic is presented. A key factor for realizing this concept is that the disappearance of PMA and the existence of DMI induce magnetization tilts and create a chiral perpendicular stripe domain within the nucleation region. This stripe domain allows the effective control of the spin transfer torque, and it is ejected from the PMA-modified region and propelled into the nanotrack, forming a stable skyrmion. Our proposed device allows the controlled nucleation and propagation of a series of skyrmions, which allows binary information to be written in a controlled manner, consequently, yielding simple devices with two terminals. This study provides an efficient route for designing tunable skyrmionics-mechanic memory devices.

Abstract:Magnetic skyrmionium can be used as a nanometer-scale non-volatile information carrier, which shows no skyrmion Hall effect due to its special structure carrying zero topological charge. Here, we report the static and dynamic properties of an isolated nanoscale skyrmionium in a frustrated magnetic monolayer, where the skyrmionium is stabilized by competing interactions. The frustrated skyrmionium has a size of about 10 nm, which can be further reduced by tuning perpendicular magnetic anisotropy or the magnetic field. It is found that the nanoscale skyrmionium driven by the damping-like spin-orbit torque shows directional motion with a favored Bloch-type helicity. A small driving current or magnetic field can lead to the transformation of an unstable Néel-type skyrmionium to a metastable Bloch-type skyrmionium. A large driving current may result in the distortion and collapse of the Bloch-type skyrmionium. Our results are useful for the understanding of frustrated skyrmionium physics, which also provide guidelines for the design of spintronic devices based on topological spin textures.
