Abstract:Biofouling causing an increase in plastic density and sinking is one of the hypotheses to account for the unexpectedly low amount of buoyant plastic debris encountered at the ocean surface. Field surveys show that polyethylene and polypropylene, the two most abundant buoyant plastics, both occur below the surface and in sediments, and experimental studies confirm that biofouling can cause both of these plastics to sink. However, studies quantifying the actual density of fouled plastics are rare, despite the fact that density will determine the transport and eventual fate of plastic in the ocean. Here we investigated the role of microbial biofilms in sinking of polyethylene microplastic and quantified the density changes natural biofouling communities cause in the coastal waters of the North Sea. Molecular data confirmed the variety of bacteria and eukaryotes (including animals and other multicellular organisms) colonizing the plastic over time. Fouling communities increased the density of plastic and caused sinking, and the plastic remained negatively buoyant even during the winter with lower growth rates. Relative surface area alone, however, did not predict whether a plastic piece sank. Due to patchy colonization, fragmentation of sinking pieces may result in smaller pieces regaining buoyancy and returning to the surface. Our results suggest that primarily multicellular organisms cause sinking of plastic pieces with surface area to volume ratios (SA:V) below 100 (generally pieces above a couple hundred micrometers in size), and that this is a "tipping point" at which microbial biofilms become the key players causing sinking of smaller pieces with higher SA:V ratios, including most fibers that are too small for larger (multicellular) organisms to colonize.

Abstract:Thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) has been reported to improve the clinical picture of patients with the predominantly cerebellar form of spinocerebellar degeneration. The authors performed a double-blind, double cross-over, four-month trial, where TRH, at the daily dose of 2 and 4 mg, and placebo were given intramuscularly over a period of one month each. Sixteen patients with Friedreich's disease and 14 patients with different forms of spinocerebellar degeneration completed the trial. Features of cerebellar involvement, such as dysarthria, dysmetria and stance ataxia, showed a slight but significant improvement during TRH treatment. TRH was well tolerated. Transient nausea was the most frequent side-effect.
Retention and dispersion of buoyant plastic debris in a well-mixed estuary from drifter observations

Abstract:Buoyant plastics enter estuaries largely from urban streams and an unknown fraction is retained before further transport to the open ocean. Plastic drifters were launched in a well-mixed estuary to simulate the movement of surface buoyant plastics. Two experiments were conducted, one during spring tides and one during neap tides, both with similar river flows and winds. Stronger tidal currents during spring tides resulted in larger dispersion and further downstream transport of the drifters. Half of the drifters were grounded within two tidal cycles. During the neap experiment, even more of the drifters (87%) were retained in the estuary. The grounding of such a high proportion of drifters suggests that much of the plastic pollution in estuaries of this type remains close to the riverine source. These findings imply that local clean-up programs removing grounded litter can reduce over half of the plastic pollution input to these estuaries.

The influence of NADH on the ethylmorphine-N-demethylation in liver microsomes from control and phenobarbital-treated rats or different ages.

Abstract:The ethylmorphine-N-demethylation by liver microsomes from control and phenobarbital-treated rats of different ages was investigated by means of adding NADPH in combination with NADH to the incubation medium. The rate of ethylmorphine-N-demethylation in the presence of NADPH without NADH is greater in adult than in young rats and greater in induced that in control rats. The higher the activity of ethylmorphine metabolism with NADPH alone the more it is abolsutely enhanced by NADH. The relative increase in ethylmorphine metabolism caused by NADH is equal in all groups of animals. It is concluded that there are no differences in the introduction of the second electron from NADH to the oxygenated cytochrome P-450 but there are differences in the concentration of cytochrome-substrate complex and, consequently, in the oxygenated cytochrome-substrate complex. The enhancing effect of NADH is higher at lower NADPH concentrations. In the presence of NADH, the NADPH concentrations necessary to obtain a msximum metabolic rate are lower than without NADH.
Seabirds as biovectors in the transport of plastic debris across ecosystem borders: A case study from the Humboldt Current Upwelling System

Abstract:Seabirds have become biovectors of plastic pollutants between marine and terrestrial ecosystems, and transport of plastics to their nesting sites becomes relevant due to increasing levels of pollution. To determine the pathways by which plastic reaches their colonies, we analysed the abundance of plastics at the nesting sites of five seabird species (Humboldt penguin Spheniscus humboldti, Peruvian booby Sula variegata, kelp gull Larus dominicanus, grey gull Leucophaeus modestus, Markham's storm-petrel Hydrobates markhami) nesting in northern Chile. Seabirds were primarily grouped according to their nesting behaviour, but two species foraging in contrasting habitats (kelp gull and Markham's storm-petrel) were also compared directly. The abundance, type, and polymer of macro-, meso- and microplastics were analysed in the soil of colonies and control sites, and microplastic ingestion was evaluated for selected species. Densities of plastics in colonies of surface-nesting seabirds ranged from 0 to 21.4 items m-2 (mainly plastic bags and thin films), and 0.002 to 19.7 items m-2 (mainly hard fragments) in colonies of burrow-nesting seabirds. Mean microplastic loads in the stomachs of seabirds were between 3.7 ± 4.2 plastic items individual-1. Overall, the abundances of plastic items in all seabird colonies were low, suggesting a limited transfer of plastics from sea to land. For kelp gulls, the results indicate transfer of macroplastic items to colonies, reaching the colony via regurgitates, with landfills considered as the main plastic source. Our results suggest that contrasting nesting behaviour and foraging habitats among species can explain differential plastic accumulation in seabird colonies, but also other factors, such as wind, contribute to the accumulation of plastic debris in colonies. Proper management of sanitary landfills are key to reduce plastic contamination of coastal seabirds and their colonies.

Bacteriol. 84:157–162. 1962—Myxococcus virescens, M. fulvus, M. stipitatus, M. lacteus, Chondrococcus blasticus, and Chondromyces crocatus were tested for antibacterial activity, and all were found to secrete products that inhibited the growth of gram-positive eubacteria. The amount of inhibition varied with the myxobacterium employed and with the eubacterium used as a test organism. The growth of gram-negative eubacteria was in no case visibly affected by the antibiotic products. The experiments performed failed to indicate any positive relationship between the antibacterial activity and the bacteriolytic capacity of the six myxobacteria investigated.

Abstract:Sinking of microplastics (MPs) after biofouling is considered an important mechanisms responsible for the downward transport/sedimentation of MPs in the ocean and freshwaters. Previous studies demonstrated MP sinking caused by an increase in the composite density of MPs after biofouling, while MPs with smaller size or shapes with higher surface area to volume ratios (SA:V), such as films, are speculated to sink faster. In this study, we designed an in situ microcosm to simulate the ambient environmental conditions experienced by floating MPs to elucidate the biofouling and sinking of polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and expanded-polystyrene (EPS) MPs of various sizes and shapes. Our results showed smaller PE and PP MP granules sank faster than large ones. Even EPS granules of 100 μm diameter, having a much lower density (0.02 mg/mm<sup>3</sup>) than water, started to sink after 2 weeks of biofouling. Moreover, PE film and fiber MPs with higher SA:V did not sink faster than PE MP granules of the same mass, implying that mechanisms other than SA:V, such as fouling contact area and drag coefficient, play a role in the regulation of biofouling and sinking of MPs.

Abstract:Plastic debris is a significant and rapidly developing ecological issue in coastal marine ecosystems, especially in areas where it accumulates. This study introduces "plasticlusters", a new form of floating debris agglomeration found in the Yasmine Hammamet marina (Tunisia, North-Africa), loosely attached to pontoon ropes around the water surface level. The analysis of two samples revealed that they were formed primarily by average 2.11 mm polystyrene fragments, 3.43 mm fibers, 104 mm polypropylene and polyethylene sheets, and 122 mm decomposing seagrass leaves. They were inhabited by several taxa, including at least 2 cryptogenic and 5 non-indigenous species (NIS). Unlike other plastic formations, plasticlusters provide a novel and potentially temporal microhabitat to fouling assemblages due to their loose and unconsolidated structure which, combined with marinas being NIS hubs, could enhance NIS dispersion. The results of this study raise concerns about the combined ecological effects of debris accumulation and biocontamination inside marinas.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are insidious plastic particles with sizes ranging from 1 to 5000 μm. Their presence has been reported all over the world. Recently, bioremediation to remove MPs from water columns using filter feeders as biofilters has been proposed. In a previous lab experiment, the MP bioremediation potential of four fouling organisms from a mariculture facility (Mytilus galloprovincialis, Sabella spallanzanii, Phallusia mammillata, Paraleucilla magna) was separately assessed in single-species experiment. Herein, a follow-up of the work is presented using a multi-species approach. The four organisms were placed together in the same 5 L beaker and fed with a concentration of 250 p/L 6 μm red polystyrene discernible particles. After digesting the organisms and counting the MPs in both the water and the organisms, the results of the two experiments were compared. In the previous experiment, S. spallanzanii had the highest particle retention (PR) value (PR = 88.01%), while in this experiment, P. mammillata has the lowest PR value (PR = 31%). The multi-species approach resulted in a higher number of plastics being removed from the water (88%) compared to the single-species experiments. These fouling organisms naturally exist as a community, acting as an efficient filter with complex morphologies and hydrodynamic features. Here, this simple marine animal forest is re-evaluated by exploiting the ecosystem services provided by these organisms as a solution to MP pollution problem in a mariculture environment.

Abstract:Non-indigenous species (NIS) establish and thrive on floating artificial substrata along mid-latitude shores, which might serve as propagule reservoirs and stepping stones for their dispersal. However, often, the NIS are not able to colonize the adjacent seafloor, where high predation pressure by benthic predators might inhibit them. To test this hypothesis, we quantified and compared consumption rates of standardized bait (squidpops) in four water depth zones (sea surface, sub-surface, midwaters, seafloor) in five representative regions in the Southeast Pacific, covering oceanic Rapa Nui (Easter Island; 27°S, 109°W; November 2022) as well as the Chilean continental coast (29–41°S, 71–73°W; March–June 2022). We found a strong overall effect of water zonation, with significant bait consumption being limited to the seafloor and occurring only sporadically in other depth zones. Consumption frequencies also differed between experimental regions but were not influenced by latitude or mean sea surface temperature. An analogous experiment with the NIS Ciona robusta , conducted at one sampling site, showed that the occurrence or absence of predation per site and water depth zone, but not the exact consumption rates, concurred between both bait types. Our results confirm that predation in SE Pacific temperate shallow waters mainly depends on benthic predators that cannot reach higher zones of the water column. These findings have far-reaching implications, as they indicate that predation rates in mid-latitude systems might be underestimated through commonly used water column-based experiments. For a comprehensive estimation of predation pressure in a given system, future studies should consider differences between vertical water zones.

Abstract:<p>Microplastics (MPs) have frequently been detected in freshwater environments, and there is growing concern about their ecological effects, especially the influence of the "plastisphere" on the freshwater ecosystems. The colonization of microbes on MPs would significantly alter their transport behavior, i.e., buoyancy, in fresh water. In this research, we studied the effects of biofilm colonization on the sinking and floating of three MPs, i.e., polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polypropylene (PP), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC), after 44 days of incubation in three freshwater systems (the Niushoushan River, the Qinhuai River, and East Lake) in China. The results showed that the biofilms attached to the three MPs contained different biomass and chlorophyll-a levels were related to water environmental conditions and physicochemical properties of MPs, based on redundancy analysis. Generally, PET and PVC sinking, with density higher than water, tended to increase after biofilm formation. Thereafter, the settling velocity of biofouled PET and PVC squares became faster than that of the virgin ones. In summary, our study suggested that biofouling does affect the sinking of MPs in fresh water and consequently influences the transport behavior and the distribution characteristics of MPs in freshwater environments, and this issue deserves more scientific attention.</p>

Abstract:Despite an increasing research conducted on ocean plastic pollution over the last decade, there are still large knowledge gaps in our current understanding of how floating plastic debris accumulating in subtropical oceanic gyres may harm the surface-associated pelagic community known as neuston. Removing floating plastic debris from the surface ocean can minimize potentially adverse effects of plastic pollution on the neuston, as well as prevent the formation of large quantities of secondary micro- and nanoplastics. However, due to the scarcity of observational data from remote and difficult to access offshore waters, neuston dynamics in subtropical oceanic gyres and thus the potential impacts of plastic pollution as well as of cleanup activities on the neuston remain uncertain. Here, we provide rare observational data of the relative distribution of floating plastic debris (0.05–5 cm in size) and members of the neuston in the eastern North Pacific Ocean. Our results reveal that the dominant neustonic species co-occurring with high concentrations of floating plastic debris in the North Pacific Garbage Patch (NPGP) such as Porpita porpita , Halobates spp., pteropods, isopods, heteropods, and crabs depict either a low atmospheric drag due to physical attributes or a potential plastic-associated fitness benefit such as increased surface area for oviposition and structure for habitat. We further observe relatively higher plastic to organism ratios inside the NPGP for most target species compared to waters outside the NPGP. The findings presented here provide a first observational baseline to develop ecological models that can help evaluate the long-term risks of plastic pollution and of offshore cleanup activities for neuston in the eastern North Pacific Ocean. We further suggest that offshore mitigation strategies aiming at removing floating plastic debris from the ocean surface need to evaluate both, the direct impact of neuston bycatch during plastic removal on neuston population dynamics, as well as the potential benefits of reducing the negative effects of plastic pollution on the neuston.

Abstract:Plastic pollution is widespread throughout aquatic environments globally, with many organisms known to interact with and ingest plastic. In marine environments, microbial biofilms that form on plastic surfaces can produce the odorous compound dimethyl sulfide (DMS), which is a known foraging cue. This has been shown to increase the ingestion of plastic by some invertebrates and therefore act as a biological factor which influences the risks of plastic to marine ecosystems. In freshwater however, the production of DMS has been largely overlooked, despite the known sensitivity of some freshwater species to this compound. To address this gap, the present study analyzed the production of DMS by biofilms which formed on low‐density polyethylene and polylactic acid films after 3 and 6 weeks of submersion in either a rural or an urban United Kingdom river. Using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, the production of DMS by these biofilms was consistently identified. The amount of DMS produced varied significantly across river locations and materials, with surfaces in the urban river generally producing a stronger signal and plastics producing up to seven times more DMS than glass control surfaces. Analysis of biofilm weight and photosynthetic pigment content indicated differences in biofilm composition across conditions and suggested that DMS production was largely driven by nonphotosynthetic taxa. For the first time this work has documented the production of DMS by plastic litter after submersion in freshwater rivers. Further work is now needed to determine if, as seen in marine systems, this production of DMS can encourage the interaction of freshwater organisms with plastic litter and therefore operate as a biological risk factor in the impacts of plastic on freshwater environments. Abstract:The seafloor is recognised as a major sink for marine litter. However, studies conducted in this compartment addressing marine litter densities and its interactions with fauna are scarce, mainly due to sampling constraints. In this paper, we assess marine litter density, composition and interactions with marine communities and evaluate its relationship with fishing activities at the "Banco de la Concepción" seamount (Canary Islands, Spain). We took advantage of underwater video records taken with a Remotely Operated Towed Vehicle in the framework of the LIFE IP INTEMARES project. A total of 56 video transects were analysed covering about 9 km with 19 h of video recording. Transects were categorised as high, low, and null fishing effort based on the Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) positional data registered between 2009 and 2017. Litter items were recorded in 70% of the transects with a mean density of 2122 (±2464) items km −2 . There were significant differences in litter densities over the three levels of fishing pressure, with a density decrease from stations of high to stations of null fishing pressure. Regarding categories, plastic was by far the most abundant category found (83.1%), mainly consisting of fishing lines, both monofilaments and entangled longlines. The study of the interactions of marine litter with fauna showed that less than 20% of the items presented an interaction with benthic organisms either by causing or not a visible impact. The sponge Asconema setubalense accounted for more than half (57.4%) of all interactions, but only 5% of all A. setubalense specimens showed physical damage.

Abstract:Human influence along the coastline is a significant threat to biodiversity and includes the alteration or replacement of natural habitat with artificial structures. Infrastructure such as docks and marinas are common throughout the world and typically have negative impacts on coastal flora and fauna. Impacts include the reduction of native biodiversity, the increase of introduced species, and the alteration of biotic interactions (e.g., predation). Many studies examine human disturbance on biotic interactions within a single habitat (i.e., docks or marinas) but what lacks are paired comparisons using standardized methods of biotic interactions between artificial and nearby natural habitats. In the current study, benthic fouling communities were allowed to develop, with and without predator access, in artificial and seagrass habitats. Cages were used to reduce predation and removed to expose communities to fish predators. Prior to exposure, communities were either left at their original site or transplanted to the opposite habitat and changes in the percent cover of species found were compared. Initially, community composition differed between habitats and when predation was reduced (caged vs. open). When developed communities within cages were exposed to predators, predation was strong but only in artificial habitats and regardless of where communities originated. In contrast, little predation occurred at seagrass sites on previously caged communities developed within seagrass beds or that were transplanted from artificial habitat. Taken together, results indicate that the strength of biotic interactions can differ depending on habitat, leading to changes in community composition. With the continuous expansion of artificial structures world-wide, it is becoming increasingly important to understand not only their effects on biotic interactions and biodiversity but also how these effects extend and compare to adjacent natural habitats.

Floating plastics as a potential dispersal vector for rafting marine non-native species

Abstract:Marine species raft on floating litter, including various plastics, potentially spreading non-native species and threatening global marine habitats. Despite limited attention, Didemnum vexillum, an invasive colonial tunicate in Europe, colonised coasts of southwest Scotland (2009) and northeast Ireland (2012), likely transported via rafting. We studied D. vexillum survival and performance on three plastic types (Polyethylene, Polypropylene and Polystyrene) finding high survival rates over 42 days, with colonies thriving best on PS. Using these data, hydrodynamic and particle tracking models simulated dispersal from existing Irish Sea colonies, projecting potential rafting distances of up to ∼150 km for surface particles influenced by tide and wind, and half that for neutrally-buoyant mid-depth particles driven by tidal currents alone. Hence, the modelling supports the potential for dispersion of this species within the Irish Sea via rafting. This study highlights marine plastics as a vector that may facilitate widespread dispersal of non-native species.
Influence of trophic overlaps and trophic niche amplitude on microplastic intake of fish species in shallow areas of a neotropical coastal lagoon

Abstract:Plastic pollution is a global challenge that affects all marine ecosystems, and reflects all types of uses and activities of human society in these environments. In marine ecosystems, microplastics and mesoplastics interact with invertebrates and become available to higher predators, such as fish, which can ingest these contaminants. This study aimed to analyze how ecological food interactions (diet overlap and trophic niche amplitude) among fish species contribute to the ingestion of plastic particles. The gastrointestinal contents of six fish species ( Atherinella brasiliensis , Eucinostomus melanopterus , Eucinostomus argenteus , Genidens genidens , Coptodon rendalli , and Geophagus brasiliensis ) were analyzed to identify prey items and plastic ingestion. Based on the ontogenetic classification, A. brasiliensis , E. melanopterus , and G. genidens were divided into juveniles and adults, and the six fish species analyzed were divided into nine predator groups. Most of the plastics ingested by the fish species were blue microplastic (MP) fibers (< 0.05 mm) classified as polyester terephthalate, polyethylene, and polybutadiene. Considering all the analyzed predators, the average number and weight of plastics ingested per individual were 2.01 and 0.0005 g, respectively. We observed that predators with a high trophic overlap could present a relationship with the intake of MP fibers owing to predation on the same resources. In addition, we observed the general pattern that when a species expands its trophic diversity and niche, it can become more susceptible to plastic ingestion. For example, the species with the highest Levin niche amplitude, E. argenteus juveniles, had the highest mean number (2.9) of ingested MP fibers. Understanding the feeding ecology and interactions among species, considering how each predator uses habitats and food resources, can provide a better understanding of how plastic particle contamination occurs and which habitats are contaminated with these polluting substances.

Abstract:Currently, the lipid content of fish feeds includes high amounts of terrestrial vegetable oils, rich in n-6 fatty acids and poor in n-3 fatty acids. Sinking organic matter in the shape of fragmented pellets and fish faeces could be ingested by the surrounding fauna attracted to the submerged structures of aquaculture facilities or living in natural benthic habitats. Fatty acids contained in feed pellets were used as trophic markers to shed light on the assimilation and incorporation of aquaculture wastes by the invertebrate fauna associated to sea-cages. Eighteen macroinvertebrate species, and zooplankton, seaweeds and sediments were collected from two fish farms, one of which (control) had not been used as such for two years. This study demonstrates that macroinvertebrate fauna present in fouling can take up sinking organic matter from farms. Further research should be directed at assessing the potential implications of aquaculture production for the surrounding ecosystem.
