Abstract:Sage Open, Volume 14, Issue 2, April-June 2024. As the most active field in China's economic development, the digital economy is crucial to the high-quality development of enterprises. Taking Chinese-listed agricultural enterprises as research samples, this paper discusses the effect of the digital economy on promoting the high-quality development of agricultural enterprises and the mechanism behind it from the perspective of total factor productivity of enterprises. The study found that the digital economy significantly promoted the improvement of total factor productivity of agricultural enterprises and enabled the high-quality development of agricultural enterprises, and this conclusion remained valid after controlling for endogeneity and conducting robustness tests. In terms of action mechanisms, the digital economy is conducive to promoting green innovation and promoting the high-quality development of agricultural enterprises; However, entrepreneurial activity has a masking effect. Further analysis shows that the digital economy plays a more significant role in promoting non-resource-intensive agricultural enterprises located in northern China. At the same time, the higher the industrial structure and financial development level of the region, the more positive impact the digital economy can play. Abstract:With the deep integration of the digital economy and agricultural development, agricultural digital transformation promotes agricultural production, and industrial upgrading and broadens sales channels to achieve the strategic goal of rural revitalization in China. To explore whether agricultural digitization can help farmers increase their income and what path can be achieved, this study is based on the theoretical framework of rural revitalization theory and digitization. Through a questionnaire survey of 1500 farmers in Hubei Province, the impact mechanism of agricultural digitization transformation on farmers' income is empirically studied. The empirical results show that the digital transformation of agriculture can promote the increase in farmers' income, and promote the increase in farmers' income by improving production efficiency, broadening sales channels, and promoting the upgrading of agricultural structure. At the same time, both production efficiency and sales channels form a chain double intermediary path with the upgrading of agricultural structure. Under the background of rural revitalization, this study provides theoretical references and guidance for further promoting agricultural digital transformation to increase farmers' income. The marginal contribution of this study is to construct a theoretical model of agricultural digitization to promote farmers' income increase, which has important theoretical reference and guiding significance for guiding the development direction of agricultural digitization and promoting farmers' income increase.

Abstract:Governments globally aim to boost productivity and enhance farmers' livelihoods, addressing challenges like climate change, food security, and labor shortages through digital technologies. However, adoption rates in developing countries remain low due to uncertainties regarding expected returns and obstacles stemming from subjective and objective factors among farmers. This study takes China as a case study to examine the internal and external factors influencing growers' adoption intensity of digital technology and its impact on enhancing economic benefits, aiming to provide valuable insights for the promotion of digital technology in other countries and regions. This study employs a mixed-methods approach, integrating qualitative and quantitative methodologies, utilizing data from Shandong and Liaoning provinces. The findings underscore the significant role of growers' knowledge, technology compatibility, government support, and competitive pressure in driving the adoption of digital technology among growers, with male growers and those managing larger cultivation areas demonstrating higher adoption intensity. Digital technologies can enhance growers' economic benefits by reducing labor and input costs, increasing yields, and improving quality, with a 30.4% increase in economic benefits for each unit increase in adoption intensity of digital technologies. Technology promoters can use these findings to enhance growers' awareness, highlight the practical benefits, and offer agricultural socialized services to promote digital technology adoption.

Abstract:To study the impact mechanism and effect of agricultural digitization on the agricultural field plays a vital role in achieving the target of high-quality agricultural development. There are three perspectives that can be taken to construct the framework of analysis as to the impact mechanism of agricultural digitization on the high-quality development of agriculture: enhancing agricultural production efficiency, optimizing resource allocation and upgrading the industrial structure. Besides, the threshold effect of the education level of the labor force is also analyzed. Based on China's provincial panel data from 2011 to 2020, the two-way fixed effects model and threshold effect test model are applied to verify the research hypothesis. It has been discovered that agricultural digitization is conducive to promoting the high-quality development of agriculture. Heterogeneity analysis shows that agricultural digitization plays a more significant role in the eastern region than in the central and western regions. There is a single threshold effect that depends on the education level of the rural labor force in the promotion of agricultural digitization to high-quality agricultural development. When the threshold is exceeded, agricultural digitization plays a more significant role in promoting high-quality agricultural development. There are three policy suggestions made to conclude the study. The first one is to improve the construction of agricultural digitization infrastructure. The second one is to pay attention to the differences in the development degree and demand between regions in the process of agricultural digitization construction. The last one is to improve the quality of the rural labor force and the input of scientific and technological talents in the agricultural industry.

Abstract:The digital economy, as a new economic form with high information density, provides a new driving force for the realization of high-quality agricultural development. Panel data of 31 provinces in China from 2011 to 2020 were selected for analysis. The static panel data interaction effect model and panel threshold model were used to verify the nonlinear influence mechanism and heterogeneity of financial development in the process of the digital economy affecting high-quality agricultural development. The findings are as follows. (1) During the study period, the high-quality development of China’s agriculture showed a steady upward trend; however, the regional differences were significant, and the eastern part was larger than the central and western part. (2) The digital economy can promote high-quality agricultural development. (3) The digital economy has a double threshold effect in the process of affecting high-quality agricultural development, which depends on the level of financial development. When the threshold is exceeded, the digital economy has a more significant promoting effect on high-quality agricultural development. (4) The impact of the digital economy on high-quality agricultural development is heterogeneous. From the perspective of different regions, the impact effect is greatest in the eastern region, while the effect is smaller in the central and western regions. From different resource endowments, the positive impact effect is greatest in the major grain-selling areas, followed by the major grain producing areas, but the positive digital economy driving effect is not significant in the balance of production and sales areas. Finally, three policy suggestions are proposed. First, the Chinese government should increase investments in and support for digital technology to promote the integration of the digital economy and agriculture. Second, the Chinese government should promote the development of digital inclusive finance in areas with financial development below the threshold. Third, different regions should implement differentiated digital economies to promote high-quality agricultural development.

Abstract:With the progress of information technology, digital technology has rapidly penetrated into all sectors of the national economy and is accelerating the reconstruction of the economic development model, which has become a new engine to drive economic growth and lead industrial development. Based on the panel data of China's provinces from 2013 to 2020, this paper empirically tested the effect and mechanism of digital economic development on high-quality agricultural development by constructing an evaluation index system for high-quality agricultural development with economic, social, and ecological benefits. The results show that the development of the digital economy has promoted the high-quality development of agriculture, and the promotion effect in the eastern region is stronger than that in the central and western regions. In addition to direct promotion, digital economy also promotes high-quality agricultural development by promoting the development of green agriculture. We should actively promote the construction of digital economy and promote the deep integration of digital economy and agriculture. Secondly, government should improve the digital economy governance to create a good legal environment for the green development of agriculture and, at the same time, help farmers establish digital economic awareness and train farmers in digital economy vocational skills. Finally, digital agriculture development policies should be formulated according to local conditions.

Abstract:In recent years, the digital economy has shown great potential in regard to in driving social production and development. In the context of the construction of digital villages, the deep integration of the digital economy and agricultural development has injected new vitality into improving the quality and efficiency of agricultural production, becoming an important way to promote sustainable agricultural development. Based on the panel data of 31 provinces in China from 2012 to 2021, the study utilizes the entropy method to measure the level of the digital economy and the high-quality development of agriculture. Additionally, this study explores the impact and mechanism of the digital economy on the high-quality development of agriculture by the fixed effect, mediation effect, and the spatial spillover models. In summary, the digital economy can significantly drive the high-quality development of agriculture, which is still valid after considering endogeneity and robustness. Mechanistically, the rationalization of industrial structure is an important path for the digital economy in regard to driving the high-quality development of agriculture. Regionally, the dividends of the digital economy for high-quality agricultural development in the central and western regions are greater than those in the eastern region. Spatially, the digital economy has a spatial spillover effect on the high-quality development of agriculture. Moreover, it can promote the synergistic development of adjoining regions. Therefore, policy recommendations are made in terms of strengthening rural infrastructure, emphasizing the development of regional shortcomings, and strengthening internal with external regional linkages.

Abstract:The digital economy’s transformative impact on agriculture presents both opportunities and challenges for China’s pursuit of high-quality agricultural and rural development. This study investigates the complex interplay between digital economy, industrial structure transformation, and agricultural advancement using panel data from 31 Chinese provinces spanning 2012–2021. We employed mediation analysis and threshold effect models to uncover several key findings: (1) The digital economy influences high-quality agricultural and rural development through the dual-mediating mechanisms of industrial structure intensification and upgrading in China. (2) These mediating effects exhibit heterogeneous patterns: while industrial intensification positively channels the digital economy’s impact, industrial upgrading shows an initial negative indirect effect, suggesting potential short-term disruptions. (3) The relationship between digital economy and agricultural development is nonlinear, characterized by significant threshold effects. The digital economy’s positive impact becomes more pronounced as industrial structure surpasses certain sophistication and advancement thresholds. Our findings reveal the nuanced dynamics of digital-driven agricultural transformation, highlighting the need for targeted policies that leverage industrial-structure changes while mitigating potential adverse effects. This research contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of how digitalization can be harnessed to promote sustainable and high-quality agricultural and rural development in China, with implications for other developing economies navigating similar transitions.

Abstract:The inclusiveness of digital finance brings new opportunities for the development of agriculture, rural areas, and farmers. The purpose of this paper is to clarify how digital finance influences relatively large-scale farmers’ agricultural income. Based on survey data from rural China, this paper systematically investigates the impact of digital finance on relatively large-scale farmers’ agricultural income using the Multiple Intermediary Effect Model. The findings of this study reveal that digital finance has a substantial positive influence on relatively large-scale farmers’ agricultural income, and this effect still exists after considering endogeneity and a series of robustness tests. Further mechanism analyses suggest that agricultural capital, agricultural land, and agricultural workforce play a partial mediating role between digital finance and agricultural income. The development of digital finance has a positive impact on improving agricultural capital investment and land transfer, while it has a negative impact on agricultural workforce. Moreover, the results of the grouping estimation show that digital finance has more significant effects on agricultural income for economic crops and farmers who received agricultural skills training and agricultural services. These results provide a micro explanation to promote relatively large-scale farmers’ agricultural income with the accelerated popularization of digital finance, urgently needed for most emerging countries seeking high-quality rural development.

Abstract:Adopting ecological agricultural technologies (EATs) is an effective way to guarantee food security and protect the environment. With the advancement of the digital village strategy, the continuous integration of the digital economy with the rural economy has gradually become an emerging driving force for sustainable agriculture. However, few studies have examined the impact of farmers' participation in the digital economy in different links of the agricultural industry chain on EATs adoption from a micro perspective. Using data from 2,825 grain farmers from the 2020 China Rural Revitalization Survey, this paper applies the treatment effect model and the mediating effect model to empirically analyze the impact and mechanism of participation in the digital economy on farmers' EATs adoption from an ecological effect perspective. This paper characterizes farmers' participation in the digital economy in terms of digital production, digital sales, and digital finance. The results show that participation in the digital economy significantly promotes farmers' EATs adoption. The sub-dimensional test found that participation in digital production, digital sales, and digital finance significantly promotes farmers' EATs adoption. The above findings remain robust after a series of robustness tests, such as changing the estimation method and replacing the dependent variable. Mechanism analysis shows that participation in the digital economy, especially digital sales and digital finance, could promote farmers' EATs adoption by increasing the demand for agricultural machinery services, improving information availability, and enhancing food safety cognition; participation in the digital production could promote farmers' EATs adoption by increasing the demand for agricultural machinery services. Results of heterogeneity analysis show that the promotion effect of participation in the digital economy on EATs adoption is more substantial among farmers with higher digital literacy and larger cultivated land scales. The findings of this paper provide insights for China and other countries to effectively use digital technology to promote sustainable agriculture under the pressure of achieving sustainable development goals.

Abstract:This study analyzes the effect of digital rural construction on farmers' income growth and the underlying mechanism using a 2SLS instrumental variable approach based on the county digital village index developed by Peking University and AliResearch, as well as micro-survey data of farmers in China. After fully correcting for endogeneity and verifying the robustness of the models, we found that digital rural construction has a significant positive impact on farmers' total household income, wage income, and property income, while also inhibiting the growth of net agricultural income. Furthermore, we found that digital rural construction increases farmers' income mainly by promoting non-agricultural employment and asset transformation. In terms of heterogeneity analysis, digital rural construction has a greater effect on increasing farmers' income with high physical and human capital, but it is not beneficial to farmers with moderate social capital. It also has a greater effect on increasing farmers' income in villages with better infrastructure. In addition, digital rural construction more significantly increases farmers' income in the eastern, central, and southern regions of China compared with the western and northern regions. These findings provide new empirical evidence of the effect of digital rural construction on farmers' income growth in China and other developing countries.

This research delves into the intricate relationship between informatization and the enhancement of farmers' income, revealing a variety of perspectives on the matter. The research explores three distinct angles that highlight the complexities of the relationship between informatization and the growth of income in rural areas. Through rigorous analysis, the study aims to provide insights into the interplay between informatization and farmers' income growth. It identifies challenges and opportunities in the process of rural digitalization, such as the incomplete industrial chain of agricultural digitalization and the need for enhanced agricultural market information platforms. The study also underscores the importance of increasing farmers' digital literacy as a means to broaden income growth avenues. In doing so, the research strives to contribute to a more balanced and equitable rural society in China. Abstract:The deep integration of the agricultural digital economy and foreign trade is an important driving force for promoting high–quality economic development. Based on a theoretical analysis of the impact mechanisms of the agricultural digital economy on agricultural exports, this study empirically examines the impact and mechanism of the agricultural digital economy on agricultural exports using Chinese agricultural export data from 2011 to 2016. The relevant findings are threefold. (1) The agricultural digital economy significantly enhances the growth of China's agricultural exports, and the result remains robust after a series of robustness tests. (2) The heterogeneity analysis reveals that the agricultural digital economy has a greater role in promoting exports from quality frontier firms, primary agricultural products and exports to developed countries. (3) The mechanism analysis demonstrates that the agricultural digital economy promotes exports of agricultural products on the supply side most strongly through quality–enhancing and the information cost effects, improving product quality and reducing information expenditure to achieve export growth. On the demand side, domestic demand traction and external–demand creation effects exert a local market effect and stimulate import market demand to promote export growth. Abstract:This paper explore the impacts and mechanisms of digital literacy of farm households on income. The baseline regression of the impact of digital literacy of farm households on household income uses a fixed effects regression model, and the 2SLS regression model is used to address the endogeneity problem present in the model. The findings reveal that improving digital literacy among rural households significantly increases their family income, a result that remains robust even after considering endogeneity issues. Further examination of the mechanisms shows that enhancing digital literacy among rural households significantly improves their information acquisition capabilities and cognitive skills. It also deepens financial services, boosting the usage and engagement of rural households in digital financial activities, thereby enhancing family income levels. Facilitating rural residents' access to digital skills and tools to ride the digital economic wave, ensuring fair access, and achieving sustainable family income are of paramount significance for rural revitalization. It is also a crucial step in bridging the digital divide and promoting shared prosperity.

Abstract:With the increasing digital transformation of rural industries, the digital economy is considered a new driving force for consolidating the achievements of eradicating poverty and comprehensively promoting rural revitalization. This study constructs a multidimensional index to measure the digital application level of rural households based on microsurvey data and empirically investigates the economic returns and mechanism of its effects. The results show that digital application significantly improves the economic situation of households. For every 1 unit increase in the level of digital application, per capita net income of households will increase by 0.427 units, and the relative poverty incidence will decrease by 0.421 units. Mechanism analysis shows that the level of digital application in rural households can significantly improve the technical abilities of household members, promote non-agricultural employment, and increase the share of agricultural and sideline business operations, thus improving the economic situation of households. Further research shows that the economic returns obtained from digitization in rural households exhibit significant regional differences. This study provides research support on how to better examine the role of the digital economy for rural households to generate wealth and increase income.

Based on data from the 2018 China Household Tracking Survey, this study uses ordinary least squares regression with two-stage least squares as a benchmark regression to investigate the impact of the extent of smartphone use on farm household income. Our findings are as follows. ① The degree of use of new smartphone farming tools has a significant income-increasing effect on farm households. ② There is variability in the impact of the use of new smartphone farming tools on the income of farmers in different regions. The highest income-generating effects on the use of smartphone tools were found in the western region, followed by the eastern region, with the smallest effects found in the central region. ③ Low-income farmers have the highest income effects from using new smartphone farming tools. We therefore recommend further improving the digital infrastructure in rural areas to give full play to the driving force of digital technology.

Abstract:An in-depth study of the impact of digital technology on the competitiveness of agricultural export trade can provide data support and direction reference for the development of China’s agricultural digital transformation. Based on the theoretical foundation of the research on the impact path of agricultural exports, this paper integrates the entropy power method to select the agricultural digital technology indicator containing the degree of rural digital infrastructure and digital technology as the explanatory variable and the agricultural export competitiveness as the explanatory variable. Then, the measurement scheme for agricultural digital technology levels and agricultural export competitiveness is designed, and regression analysis is carried out after obtaining and testing the data. It is found that the increase in the level of agricultural digital technology (DIG) has a positive promotion effect on agricultural export competitiveness, and for every 1 unit increase in the level of digital economy development, agricultural export competitiveness increases by 1.596 units. The coefficients of digital financial inclusion level, land size, digital talent ownership, digital logistics level, and digital infrastructure construction are 1.855, 2.835, 0.239, 0.942, and 1.516, respectively, which show a positive promotion effect on agricultural export competitiveness. From the sub-sample point of view, the eastern region is leading China in both the development speed of digital technology and the scale of agricultural exports. The competitiveness of agricultural exports in foreign trade can be significantly enhanced by integrating digital technology and the agricultural export industry chain at an accelerated pace. This paper makes a useful exploration of the direction of agricultural digital transformation and the path to enhance the competitiveness of ag\[*\] agricultural exports in the international market.

Abstract:Against the background of global climate change and the rapid rise of the digital economy, the digital transformation of agriculture is profoundly changing the agricultural production and operation mode with the help of digital technology, becoming a new driving force for low-carbon and sustainable development of agriculture. However, previous studies rarely examined the impact of agricultural digital transformation on agricultural low-carbon transformation from the perspective of carbon productivity. To fill this gap, this study attempts to build a theoretical analysis framework for the impact of agricultural digital transformation on agricultural carbon productivity (ACP). By using a set of panel data from 30 provinces (cities) in China from 2011 to 2019, this study explores the impact of agricultural digital transformation on ACP, as well as its conduction mechanism and the non-linear mechanism. Empirical results show that the transformation of agricultural digitalization is conducive to the promotion of ACP. A series of robustness analyses support this conclusion. The main transmission mechanisms for digital transformation to affect ACP include agricultural industrial structure upgrading, and the agricultural scale operation. In addition, with the improvement of urbanization level and rural human capital, the impact of agricultural digital transformation on ACP presents a "U" type non-linear feature of inhibition first and promotion later. Furtherly, heterogeneity analysis shows that the impact of digital transformation on ACP will vary greatly depending on the levels of ACP, the geographical location of the studied area and whether it is a main grain-producing area. This study provides a theoretical and empirical basis for the improvement of China's agricultural carbon productivity from the perspective of the digital economy.
