Abstract:Conformations of a semiflexible polyelectrolyte (SPE) chain with neutralizing charged counterions confined in a cylinder have been investigated by off-lattice Monte Carlo simulations. Effects of electrostatic interactions of different Bjerrum length lB between PEs and counterions, PEs of different chain stiffness b, and cylindrical confinement of different radius R on the conformations of SPEs have been examined. At suitable combinations of the above parameters of lB, b, and R, perfect helical structures are observed, which can be well characterized by the tangent correlation function. The number of turns in perfect helix can be read accurately through counting the number of oscillation periods of correlation function. The expanded confined space with a larger cylindrical radius leads the helix phase region into a smaller range of b and lB. The physical mechanism for the formation of perfect helical structures is further explored by the distribution of chain monomers and counterions. Although helix formation has been associated with the electrostatic interactions and chain stiffness, the cylindrical confinement promotes the formation of perfect helical structures driven by entropy. This study can provide a deeper insight about mechanisms behind the conformation of biological macromolecules with oppositely charged counterions in confinement cavity.
Wiring Covalent Organic Frameworks with Conducting Polymers

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks are a class of crystalline porous polymers formed by linking organic units into periodically aligned skeletons and pores. Here we report a strategy for wiring these frameworks with conducting polymers via wall engineering and polymerization. We anchored each edge site with one pyrrole unit, which is densely packed along the z direction yet protruded from pore walls. This assembly enables the polymerization of pyrrole units to form polypyrrole and creates a new polypyrrole chain conformation. The resultant framework constitutes six single file polypyrrole chains in each pore and develop spatially segregated yet built‐in single molecular wires with exceptional stable polarons. Hall effect measurements revealed that the materials are p‐type semiconductors, increase conductivity by eight orders of magnitude compared to the pristine frameworks, and achieve a carrier mobility as large as 13.2 cm2 V–1 s–1. Our results open an avenue to π electronic frameworks by interlayer molecular wiring with conducting polymers.
Multichannel Conductance of Folded Single-Molecule Wires Aided by Through-Space Conjugation

Abstract:Deciphering charge transport through multichannel pathways in single-molecule junctions is of high importance to construct nanoscale electronic devices and deepen insight into biological redox processes. Herein, we report two tailor-made folded single-molecule wires featuring intramolecular π-π stacking interactions. The scanning tunneling microscope (STM) based break-junction technique and theoretical calculations show that through-bond and through-space conjugations are integrated into one single-molecule wire, allowing for two simultaneous conducting channels in a single-molecule junction. These folded molecules with stable π-π stacking interaction offer conceptual advances in single-molecule multichannel conductance, and are perfect models for conductance studies in biological systems, organic thin films, and π-stacked columnar aggregates.

Abstract:Conjugated molecules play a critical role in the construction of single-molecule devices. However, most conventional conjugated molecules, such as hydrocarbons, involve only a px-px conjugation of light elements. While the metal d-orbitals can introduce abundant electronic effects to achieve novel electronic properties, it is very scarce for the charge transport study of dx-px conjugated pathways with a metal involved. Here, we employed the single-molecule break junction technique to investigate the charge transport through dx-px conjugated backbones with metal-carbon multiple bonds integrated into the alternative conjugated pathways. The involved dx-px conjugation not only supports high conductivity comparable to that of conjugated hydrocarbons but also significantly enhances the tunable diversity in electronic properties through the metal-induced secondary interaction. Specifically, the introduction of the metal brings an unconventionally stereoelectronic effect triggered by metal-carbon dx-px hyperconjugation, which can be tuned by protonation taking place on the metal-carbon multiple bonds, collectively modulating the single-molecule rectification feature and transmission mechanism. This work demonstrates the promise of utilizing the diverse electronic effect of metals to design molecular devices.

Abstract:Biphenyl, as the elementary unit of organic functional materials, has been widely used in electronic and optoelectronic devices. However, over decades little has been fundamentally understood regarding how the intramolecular conformation of biphenyl dynamically affects its transport properties at the single-molecule level. Here, we establish the stereoelectronic effect of biphenyl on its electrical conductance based on the platform of graphene-molecule single-molecule junctions, where a specifically designed hexaphenyl aromatic chain molecule is covalently sandwiched between nanogapped graphene point contacts to create stable single-molecule junctions. Both theoretical and temperature-dependent experimental results consistently demonstrate that phenyl twisting in the aromatic chain molecule produces different microstates with different degrees of conjugation, thus leading to stochastic switching between high- and low-conductance states. These investigations offer new molecular design insights into building functional single-molecule electrical devices.

Abstract:Molecular ordering of conjugated polymers both in solution‐state aggregates and in solid‐state microstructures is a determining factor of the charge transport properties in optoelectronic devices. However, the effect of backbone conformation in conjugated polymers on assembly structures is still unclear. Herein, to understand such backbone conformation effect, three novel chlorinated benzodifurandionge‐based oligo(p‐phenylene vinylene) (BDOPV) polymers are systematically developed. These BDOPV‐based polymers exhibit significantly twisted backbone conformation (near 90° interunit torsion angle) between conjugated units, which can prevent polymer chains from forming ordered assembly structures by increasing conformational energy penalty in closely packed chains. A higher rotational barrier of the torsion angle would further prevent polymer chains from assembling, finally resulting in non‐aggregated chains in solution and highly disordered solid‐state packing structures. This work will deepen the understanding of the relationship between polymer backbone conformation and assembly structures, contributing to the exploration of the structure‐property relationship of polymers.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Conductive polymers are of great importance in a variety of chemistry related disciplines and applications. The recently developed bottom-up on-surface synthesis strategy provides us with opportunities in the bottom-up fabrication of various nanostructures in a flexible and facile manner, which could be investigated by high-resolution microscopic techniques in real space. Herein, we designed and synthesized molecular precursors functionalized with benzal gem-dibromomethyl groups. A combination of scanning tunneling microscopy, non-contact atomic force microscopy, high resolution synchrotron radiation photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations demonstrated that it is feasible to achieve the direct formation of C-C double bonded structural motifs via on-surface dehalogenative homocoupling reactions on the Au(111) surface. Correspondingly, we convert the sp3 hybridized state to sp2 hybridized state of carbon atoms, i.e., from an alkyl group to an alkenyl one. Moreover, by such a bottom-up strategy, we have successfully fabricated poly(phenylenevinylene) (PPV) chains on the surface, which is anticipated to inspire further studies towards understanding the nature of conductive polymers at the atomic scale.

Abstract:Supramolecular helical structures formed by the assembly of biological and bio-inspired building blocks (typically amino acids, peptides and proteins) are an intriguing class of materials with prospective applications in sustainable biomedical technologies and electronics. Specifically, short peptide or single amino acid building blocks can give rise to ideal materials candidates in terms of low cost, adjustability, and compatibility. Yet, to date, reliable helical topologies with specific handedness have been highly challenging to obtain. Herein, we present simple N-terminal protected aromatic pyridyl amino acids that display helicity at the molecular level confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The helical structure is stabilized by strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding between the pyridyl nitrogen and carboxylic acid groups. By comparing the specific l and d isomers with the dl racemic mixture, we explicitly demonstrate the influence of amino acid chirality on supramolecular crystal packing, self-assembly, and electromechanical properties. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) nanoindentation analysis confirms the strong rigidity of the dl assembly with very high Young's modulus (31.8 +/- 11.9 GPa) attributed to the stacked face-to-face dimers with macrocyclic architectures. The present study provides an effective strategy for precisely formulating supramolecular helical structures, which could pave the way for the development of new bio-electronic applications of smart chiroptical materials from functionalised amino acids.

Abstract:Hydrogen-bonded semiconductors stand among the next generation of electronic materials thanks to their promising and versatile properties. Hydrogen-bonding has been proven to effectively compete with traditional p-p stacking, yielding well-connected structures that enhance device morphology and electrical performance. Nevertheless, the precise positioning of hydrogen-bonding units within the molecular structure of p-conjugated segments, can significantly shape the supramolecular architectures that dictate the pathways for charge carriers and ultimately, device efficiency. We elucidate this scenario by exploring diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) molecules featuring amide units strategically positioned at varying distances from the DPP core. Using a comprehensive combination of spectroscopy, structural and microscopy tools, we rationalize the charge transport properties through a contactless technique. Our results reveal that the proximity of the amide units to the DPP core governs the suppression or promotion of intermolecular hydrogen-bonding, resulting in materials exhibiting distinct crystalline or amorphous structures, along with divergent values of photoconductivity and charge carrier lifetimes. More importantly, the strategic positioning of hydrogen-bonding units represents the next step towards integrating hydrogen-bonded small molecules into practical optoelectronic devices

Abstract:Through-bond conjugated molecules are the major frameworks for traditional molecular wires, while through-space conjugated units are rarely utilized and studied although they have shown unique conducting potential. Herein, we present novel single-molecule wires built on through-space conjugated hexaphenylbenzene. Their conductance, measured by the scanning tunneling microscopy based break-junction technique, increases with the improvement of through-space conjugation and finally reaches a remarkable value (12.28 nS) which greatly exceeds that of conventional through-bond conjugated counterpart (2.45 nS). The multichannel conducting model by integrating through-space and through-bond conjugations could be a promising strategy for the further design of robust single-molecule wires with advanced conductance and stability.

Abstract:For designing single-molecule devices that have both conjugation systems and structural flexibility, a hyperconjugated molecule with a σ–π bond interaction is considered an ideal candidate. In the investigation of conductance at the single-molecule level, since few hyperconjugation systems have been involved, the strategy of building hyperconjugation systems and the mechanism of electron transport within this system remain unexplored. Based on the skipped-conjugated structure, we present a rational approach to construct a hyperconjugation molecule using a hydroxyl group, which serves as a bridge to interact with the conjugated fragments. The measurement of single-molecule conductance reveals a two-fold conductance enhancement of the hyperconjugation system having the 'bridging' hydroxyl group compared to hydroxyl-free derivatives. Theoretical studies demonstrate that the hydroxyl group in the hyperconjugation system connects the LUMO of the two conjugated fragments and opens a through-space channel for electron transport to enhance the conductance.

Abstract:Electron-deficient heteroarenes based on dithienopyrrolobenzothiadiazole (BTPO) have been highly attractive due to their fascinating packing structures, broad absorption profiles, and promising applications in non-fullerene organic solar cells. However, control of their crystal structures for superior charge transport still faces big challenges. Herein, a conformation engineering strategy is proposed to rationally manipulate the single crystal structure of BTPO-series heteroarenes. The parent molecule BTPO-c has a 3D network crystal structure, which originates from its banana-shaped conformation. Subtracting one thiophene moiety from the central backbone leads to a looser brickwork crystal structure of the derivative BTPO-z because of its interrupted angular-shaped conformation. Further subtracting two thiophene moieties results in the derivative BTPO-l with a compact 2D-brickwork crystal structure due to its quasi-linear conformation with the unique dimer packing structure and short π-π stacking distance (3.30 Å). Further investigation of charge-transport properties via single-crystal organic transistors demonstrate that the compact 2D-brickwork crystal structure of BTPO-l leads to excellent electron mobility of 3.5 cm2 V–1 s–1, much higher than that of BTPO-c with 3D network (1.9 cm2 V–1 s–1) and BTPO-z with looser brickwork structure (0.6 cm2 V–1 s–1). Notably, this study presents, for the first time, an elegant demonstration of tunable single crystal structures of electron-deficient heteroarenes for efficient organic electronics.

Abstract:As a representative folding system that features a conjugated backbone, a series of monodispersed (o-phenyleneethynylene)-alt-(p-phenyleneethynylene) (PE) oligomers of varied chain length and different side chains were studied. Molecules with the same backbone but different side-chain structures were shown to exhibit similar helical conformations in respectively suitable solvents. Specifically, oligomers with dodecyloxy side chains folded into the helical structure in apolar aliphatic solvents, whereas an analogous oligomer with tri(ethylene glycol) (Tg) side chains adopted the same conformation in polar solvents. The fact that the oligomers with the same backbone manifested a similar folded conformation independent of side chains and the nature of the solvent confirmed the concept that the driving force for folding was the intramolecular aromatic stacking and solvophobic interactions. Although all were capable of inducing folding, different solvents were shown to bestow slightly varied folding stability. The chain-length dependence study revealed a nonlinear correlation between the folding stability with backbone chain length. A critical size of approximately 10 PE units was identified for the system, beyond which folding occurred. This observation corroborated the helical nature of the folded structure. Remarkably, based on the absorption and emission spectra, the effective conjugation length of the system extended more effectively under the folded state than under random conformations. Moreover, as evidenced by the optical spectra and dynamic light-scattering studies, intermolecular association took place among the helical oligomers with Tg side chains in aqueous solution. The demonstrated ability of such a conjugated foldamer in self-assembling into hierarchical supramolecular structures promises application potential for the system.
Effectively Enhancing the Conductance of Asymmetric Molecular Wires by Aligning the Energy Level and Symmetrizing the Coupling.

Abstract:An asymmetric structure is an important strategy for designing highly conductive molecular wires for a gap-fixed molecular circuit. As the conductance enhancement in the current strategy is still limited to about 2 times, we inserted a methylene group as a spacer in a conjugated structure to modulate the structural symmetry. We found that the conductance drastically enhanced in the asymmetric molecular wire to 1.5 orders of magnitude as high as that in the symmetric molecular wire. First-principles quantum transport studies attributed the effective enhancement to the synchronization of improved energy alignment and nearly symmetric coupling between the frontier orbitals and the electrodes.

Achieving Multiple Quantum-Interfered States via Through-Space and Through-Bond Synergistic Effect in Foldamer-Based Single-Molecule Junctions

Abstract:The construction of multivalued logic circuits by multiple quantum-interfered states at the molecular level can make full use of molecular diversity and versatility, broadening the application of molecular electronics. Understanding charge transport through different conducting pathways and how they interact with each other in molecules with a secondary structure is an indispensable foundation to achieve this goal. Herein, we elucidate the synergistic effect from through-space and through-bond conducting pathways in foldamers derived from <i>ortho</i>-pentaphenylene by the separate modulation on these pathways. The shrinkage of central heterocycles' sizes allows foldamers to stack with larger overlap degrees, resulting in level-crossing and thus transformation from constructive quantum interference (CQI) to destructive quantum interference (DQI) in a through-space pathway. The alteration of central heterocycles' connection sites enhances through-bond conjugation, leading to amplified contribution from a through-bond pathway. The enhanced through-bond pathway destructively interferes with the through-space pathway, exerting a suppression effect on transmission. Therefore, four quantum-interfered states of through-space and through-bond combination are generated, including through-space CQI-dominated states, through-space DQI-dominated states, through-space CQI states with through-bond suppression, and through-space DQI states with through-bond suppression. These findings enable us to regulate charge transport within high-order structures via multiple conducting pathways and provide a proof of concept to construct multivalued logic circuits.

Dual Modulation of Single Molecule Conductance via Tuning Side Chains and Electric Field with Conjugated Molecules Entailing Intramolecular O•••S Interactions

Abstract:Herein, single-molecule conductance studies of TBT1-TBT6 which entails 1,4-dithienylbenzene as the backbone and SMe groups as the anchoring units, with the scanning tunneling microscope break junction (STM-BJ) technique, are reported. The molecular conductance of TBT1 with intramolecular O•••S noncovalent interactions is enhanced by about one order of magnitude in comparison to their analogue TBT2 (which contains alkyl instead of alkoxy chains). By replacing the methoxy groups in TBT1 with extending alkoxy chains in TBT3, TBT4, and TBT5, the molecular backbones become twisted and as a consequence the single-molecule conductance decreases gradually, showing that the intramolecular O•••S noncovalent interaction is influenced by the structural features of alkoxy chains. More importantly, the single-molecule conductance of TBT3, TBT4, and TBT5 can be boosted by increasing the electric field applied to the molecular junctions. Remarkably, the conductance of TBT3, TBT4, and TBT5 can be reversibly modulated due to the conformational changes between twisted and planar ones by varying the electric field. These results demonstrate that molecules with intramolecular O•••S noncovalent interactions have the potential for in situ control of the electrical properties of molecular-scale devices.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks are a class of crystalline organic porous materials that can utilize π–π-stacking interactions as a driving force for the crystallization of polygonal sheets to form layered frameworks and ordered pores. However, typical examples are chemically unstable and lack intrasheet π-conjugation, thereby significantly limiting their applications. Here we report a chemically stable, electronically conjugated organic framework with topologically designed wire frameworks and open nanochannels, in which the π conjugation-spans the two-dimensional sheets. Our framework permits inborn periodic ordering of conjugated chains in all three dimensions and exhibits a striking combination of properties: chemical stability, extended π-delocalization, ability to host guest molecules and hole mobility. We show that the π-conjugated organic framework is useful for high on-off ratio photoswitches and photovoltaic cells. Therefore, this strategy may constitute a step towards realizing ordered semiconducting porous materials for innovations based on two-dimensionally extended π systems. Covalent organic frameworks can utilize π-stacking interactions for the formation of ordered, layered frameworks. Here, the authors report an ordered framework with tailored π-interactions resulting in periodic ordering in three dimensions, which leads to enhanced stability and electronic properties.
How to Stabilize the HOMO Levels and to Improve the Charge Transport Properties of Hole-Transporting Materials? Probing the Effects of Molecular Symmetry

Abstract:Considering the effects of molecular symmetries, a series of novel organic small molecule hole-transporting materials are simulated by using density functional theory (DFT) and Marcus theory of electron transfer. As a fundamental understanding, the energy level alignments and the charge transport properties are explored for their potential applications. Our results show that, compared with the dissymmetric cases, the symmetric molecules exhibit obvious advantages with more deep energy levels, more delocalized frontier molecular orbitals, and more blue-shifted absorption spectra. By adding oxygen-bridge and sulfur-bridge in the core unit of spiro-OMeTAD, the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) levels of new designed molecules are obviously downshifted from -5.08 eV to -5.20 eV, whereas the linked nitrogen-bridge makes the HOMOs up-shifted due to its strong electron-donating capacity. Meanwhile, our results also indicate that the delocalized frontier molecular orbitals in symmetric cases can effectively enhance the electronic coupling between adjacent molecules, and coupled with the lower reorganization energies, the high hole mobilities are obtained. In addition, inserting linked atoms in core unit or changing molecular symmetry only have slightly influences on the aspects of electron-hole dissociation, solubility and stability. Through systemic investigations, several promising candidates are proposed toward more efficient PSCs, and we hope that our work could provide some clues for the experimentalists to design and synthesize new small molecule materials.
