Abstract:INTRODUCTION: There is currently a lack of a well-formed consensus regarding the effects of depression on the survival of glioma patients. A more thorough understanding of such effects may better highlight the importance of recognizing depressive symptoms in this patient population and guide treatment plans in the future.OBJECTIVE: The aim of this meta-analysis was to study the effect of depression on glioma patients' survival.METHODS: A meta-analysis was conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines. PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases were searched for studies that reported depression and survival among glioma patients through 11/06/2016. Both random-effects (RE) and fixed-effect (FE) models were used to compare survival outcomes in glioma patients with and without depression.RESULTS: Out of 619 identified articles, six were selected for the meta-analysis. Using RE model, the various measures for survival outcomes displayed worsened outcomes for both high and low-grade glioma patients with depression compared to those without depression. For binary survival outcomes, the overall pooled risk ratio for survival was 0.70 (95% CI: 0.47, 1.04; 6 studies; I2 = 54.9%, P-heterogeneity = 0.05) for high grade gliomas (HGG) and 0.28 (95% CI: 0.04, 1.78; I2 = 0%, P-heterogeneity = 1.00; one study) for low grade gliomas (LGG) was. A sub-group analysis in the HGG group by depression timing (pre- versus post-operative) revealed no differences between depression and survival outcomes (P-interaction = 0.47). For continuous survival outcomes, no statistically significant difference was found among the high and low-grade glioma groups (P-interaction = 0.31). The standardized mean difference (SMD) in survival outcomes was -0.56 months (95%CI: -1.13, 0.02; 4 studies, I2 = 89.4%, P-heterogeneity < 0.01) for HGG and -1.69 months (95%CI: -3.26, -0.13; one study; I2 = 0%, P-heterogeneity = 1.00) for LGG. In patients with HGG, the pooled HR of death also showed a borderline significant increased risk of death among depressive patients (HR 1.42, 95% CI: 1.00, 2.01). Results using the FE model were not materially different.CONCLUSIONS: Depression was associated with significantly worsened survival regardless of time of diagnosis, especially among patients with high-grade glioma.

Abstract:Background: Glioblastomas are malignant brain tumors associated with high mortality and poor prognosis. Evidence from preclinical studies suggests that statins have an antitumor role, but their effects on the survival of patients with glioblastoma remain controversial. This meta-analysis attempts to assess the association between statins and glioblastoma. Methods: We searched 4 databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library) for articles that evaluate the effect of statins on the survival of patients with glioblastoma. Two reviewers were asked to assess the quality of the studies and extract the data regarding progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Result: A total of 5 studies met the inclusion criteria with 430 statin users and 2089 nonstatin users. All 5 studies were retrospectively analyzed. The pooled hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. There was no benefit of statins found pertaining to the survival of glioblastoma patients in both PFS (HR, 0.97; CI, 0.84-1.13) and OS (HR, 0.98; CI, 0.871.11). In a subgroup defined by the patterns of statin use, it was determined that usage before glioblastoma diagnosis favored the OS of patients (HR, 0.85). The result, however, failed to demonstrate a statistically significant difference. Conclusion: Use of statins was not associated with prolonged survival of patients with glioblastoma. Further well-designed randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm.
Risk factors, prognostic potency, and longitudinal variation of anxiety and depression in postoperative glioma patients

Abstract:Objective Anxiety and depression are common mental disorders in glioma patients. This study aimed to evaluate the risk factors, prognostic role, and longitudinal changes in anxiety and depression in postoperative glioma patients. Methods Anxiety and depression were assessed by Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale at baseline, month (M) 6, M12, M24 and M36 in 270 glioma patients after surgical resection. Furthermore, comprehensive clinic characteristics and treatment-related information were collected. Results Gender (female vs. male) ( P = 0.014, odds ratio (OR) = 1.974), marital status (single/divorced/widowed vs. married) ( P = 0.019, OR = 2.172), Karnofsky performance status (KPS) score (≤70 vs. > 70) ( P = 0.002, OR = 2.556), World Health Organization (WHO) classification (high-grade glioma (HGG) vs. low-grade glioma (LGG)) ( P = 0.005, OR = 2.155), and postoperative complications (yes vs. not) ( P = 0.001, OR = 2.525) were independently related to anxiety occurrence. Marital status (single/divorced/widowed vs. married) ( P = 0.034, OR = 2.026), KPS score (≤70 vs. > 70) ( P < 0.001, OR = 3.880), WHO classification (HGG vs. LGG) ( P = 0.032, OR = 1.810), and postoperative complications (yes vs. not) ( P = 0.001, OR = 2.602) were independently related to depression occurrence. Besides, anxiety ( P = 0.038) and depression ( P = 0.013) were linked with shorter overall survival (OS), and depression was an independent risk factor for worse OS ( P = 0.040, hazard ratio = 1.596). More importantly, anxiety and depression remained at a high prevalence during a 3-year follow-up. Conclusion Gender, marital status, KPS score, WHO classification, and postoperative complications are risk factors for anxiety and depression; moreover, anxiety and depression are at high prevalence continuously and correlated with worse survival in postoperative glioma patients.

Abstract:Background Surgical resection is necessary to conduct a pathological biopsy and to achieve a reduction of intracranial pressure in low-grade gliomas patients. This study aimed to determine whether a greater extent of resection would increase the overall 5-year and 10-year survival of patients with low-grade gliomas. Methods The studies addressing relationship between the extent of resection and the prognosis of low-grade gliomas updated until March 2017 were systematically searched in two databases (Pubmed and EMBASE). The relationships among categorical variables were analyzed using an odds ratio (OR) and a95% confidence interval (CI). Significance was established using CIs at a level of 95% or P < 0.05. Funnel plot was used to detect the publication bias. Results Twenty articles (a total of 2128 patients) were identified. The meta-analysis showed that the 5-year (Odds ratio (OR), 3.90;95% Confidence Interval (CI), 2.79~5.45; P < 0.01; Z = 7.95) and 10-year OS (OR, 7.91; 95%CI, 5.12~12.22; P < 0.01; Z = 9.33) associated with gross total resection (GTR) were higher than those associated with subtotal resection (STR). Similarly, as compared with biopsy(BX), the 5-year and 10-year OS were higher after either GTR (5-year: OR, 5.43; 95%CI, 3.57~8.26; P < 0.01; Z = Z = 7.9; 10-year: OR, 10.17; 95%CI, 4.02~25.71; P < 0.00001; Z = 4.9) or STR (5-year: OR, 2.59; 95%CI, 1.81~ − 3.71; P < 0.00001; Z = 5.19; 10-year: OR, 2.21; 95%CI, 1.164.25; P = 0.02; Z = 2.39). Conclusions Our research found that a greater extent of resection could significantly increase the OS of patients with low-grade gliomas.
Depression and Anxiety in Relation to Cancer Incidence and Mortality: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Cohort Studies

Abstract:The link between depression and anxiety status and cancer outcomes has been well-documented but remains unclear. We comprehensively quantified the association between depression and anxiety defined by symptom scales or clinical diagnosis and the risk of cancer incidence, cancer-specific mortality, and all-cause mortality in cancer patients. Pooled estimates of the relative risks (RRs) for cancer incidence and mortality were performed in a meta-analysis by random effects or fixed effects models as appropriate. Associations were tested in subgroups stratified by different study and participant characteristics. Fifty-one eligible cohort studies involving 2,611,907 participants with a mean follow-up period of 10.3 years were identified. Overall, depression and anxiety were associated with a significantly increased risk of cancer incidence (adjusted RR: 1.13, 95% CI: 1.06-1.19), cancer-specific mortality (1.21, 1.16-1.26), and all-cause mortality in cancer patients (1.24, 1.13-1.35). The estimated absolute risk increases (ARIs) associated with depression and anxiety were 34.3 events/100,000 person years (15.8-50.2) for cancer incidence and 28.2 events/100,000 person years (21.5-34.9) for cancer-specific mortality. Subgroup analyses demonstrated that clinically diagnosed depression and anxiety were related to higher cancer incidence, poorer cancer survival, and higher cancer-specific mortality. Psychological distress (symptoms of depression and anxiety) was related to higher cancer-specific mortality and poorer cancer survival but not to increased cancer incidence. Site-specific analyses indicated that overall, depression and anxiety were associated with an increased incidence risks for cancers of the lung, oral cavity, prostate and skin, a higher cancer-specific mortality risk for cancers of the lung, bladder, breast, colorectum, hematopoietic system, kidney and prostate, and an increased all-cause mortality risk in lung cancer patients. These analyses suggest that depression and anxiety may have an etiologic role and prognostic impact on cancer, although there is potential reverse causality; Furthermore, there was substantial heterogeneity among the included studies, and the results should be interpreted with caution. Early detection and effective intervention of depression and anxiety in cancer patients and the general population have public health and clinical importance.

Abstract:Objective A systematic review and meta‐analysis was performed to identify the factors related to cancer death anxiety based on available evidence. Design This systematic review and meta‐analysis followed the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Methods Seven databases were searched to identify studies on the relationships of cancer death anxiety with demographic characteristics, disease factors and psychosocial factors from inception to May 2023. The Agency for Medical Research and Quality (AHRQ) scale was used to evaluate the quality of the included studies. After two researchers independently completed the literature search, data extraction and quality evaluation, meta‐analysis was conducted by using RevMan5.3 and Stata 17.0 software. Results In total, 52 studies were included in this review. The results revealed that there were positive correlations of death anxiety with female sex, the symptom burden, anxiety levels, depression levels, fear of recurrence, attachment avoidance, psychological distress, resignation and confrontation coping. Death anxiety was negatively correlated with age, education level, ability to perform daily activities, self‐esteem, spiritual well‐being, sense of meaning in life, resilience, quality of life, social support and religious beliefs. Conclusions Our results can inform the design of interventions to address death anxiety and improve the overall quality of life of cancer patients. Healthcare professionals should promptly identify and focus on death anxiety in high‐risk populations of cancer patients. Relevance to Clinical Practice Cancer patients commonly experience death anxiety, and this anxiety has a nonnegligible impact on patients' mental health and overall quality of life. This study can inform the development of interventions by clinical healthcare professionals. No Patient or Public Contribution This was a meta‐analysis based on data from previous studies.

Abstract:INTRODUCTIONDepressive symptoms are prevalent among glioma patients while the impact on survival is not fully clear and underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the impact of glioblastoma-associated depression as the disease-presenting symptom and the influence of antidepressant pharmacotherapy on glioblastoma progression. METHODSWe performed a retrospective cohort study on glioblastoma patients treated at our institution. Patients with a new depression as presenting symptom were compared to non-depressive glioblastoma patients employing propensity-matched survival analysis. Additionally, tumor tissues were subjected to DNA methylation analysis (EPIC 850k array). In vitro proliferation assays were performed to investigate the effect of antidepressants on glioma cell growth. RESULTSOf 298 glioblastoma patients, 23 patients suffered from a tumor-associated depression and received antidepressants at time of diagnosis (14 SSRI, 3 NaSSA, 4 TCA and 2 unknown). Propensity-matched survival analysis revealed a shorter OS in the depression group (median OS: 8 vs. 14; HR = 2.247; 95% CI: 1 - 5.051; p < 0.05). Methylation subclass analysis indicated a predominance of RTK2 glioblastoma within the depression group (n = 14; 63.6%). Tumors of the depression group originated more likely in the frontal lobe (43.5% vs. 29.2%) and in the midbrain (13% vs. 2.43%). No significant differences in epigenetic neural signatures were found. Treatment with either citalopram or sertraline – the most frequently used antidepressants - significantly increased the proliferation index in RTK2 glioblastoma cultures but not RTK1 glioblastoma cultures. CONCLUSIONOur study reveals a strong correlation between glioblastoma-associated depression with antidepressant treatment and worse outcome in glioblastoma of the DNA methylation subclass RTK2. These findings may reveal a potential causal link, raising awareness of the increased likelihood of depression and glioblastoma progression in a methylation-dependent manner, which could guide antidepressant treatment for improving patients' quality of life.

Abstract:Objective: Anxiety and depression commonly afflict colorectal cancer (CRC) surgery patients, but their impact on survival remains uncertain. Methods: We systematically reviewed three databases for relevant articles. Data included study and patient characteristics, cancer type, anxiety/depression measures, timing, and prevalence. Meta-analyses, using common- or random-effects models, assessed associations. Subgroup analyses based on follow-up duration and publication bias assessment were performed. Results: We analyzed seven cohort studies, examining anxiety and depression's impact on mortality in colorectal cancer patients. Samples ranged from 215 to 567 for anxiety and 215 to 46 710 for depression. Using common- or random-effects models based on heterogeneity, anxiety and depression showed increased mortality risk. Pooled odds ratio (OR) for anxiety was 1.07 (95% CI [confidence interval] 1.05-1.10), depression's OR was 2.76 (95% CI 1.25-6.11; random-effects). Pooled hazard ratio (HR) for anxiety was 1.33 (95% CI 1.28-1.37; common-effects) and 1.30 (95% CI 1.19-1.43; random-effects). HRs for depression were 1.45 (95% CI 1.30-1.61; random-effects) and 1.28 (95% CI 1.25-1.32; common-effects). Subgroup analyses revealed stronger effects on mortality in a shorter follow-up (0-5 years) compared to a longer follow-up (5-28 years). Conclusion: This meta-analysis shows that anxiety and depression are linked to increased mortality in patients with CRC. The findings suggested that screening and treating mental distress improve survival and quality of life in this population.
The efficacy and safety of anti-PD-1/PD-L1 in treatment of glioma: a single-arm meta-analysis

Abstract:Objective: This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors in patients with glioma. Methods: PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and the Cochrane library were searched from inception to January 2023 without language restriction. Primary outcomes included overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), objective response rate (ORR), and adverse events (AEs). The risk of bias was assessed by subgroup analysis, sensitivity analysis, and publication bias, including funnel plot, Egger's test, and Begg's test. Results: A total of 20 studies involving 2,321 patients were included in this meta-analysis. In the analysis of the included phase III clinical trials, the forest plot showed that PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors did not improve the OS (HR=1.15, 95% CI: 1.03-1.29, P=0.02, I 2 = 14%) and PFS (HR=1.43, 95% CI: 1.03-1.99, P=0.03, I 2 = 87%). In the single-arm analysis, the forest plot demonstrated that the 6-month OS was 71% (95% CI: 57%-83%, I 2 = 92%), 1-year OS was 43% (95% CI: 33%-54%, I 2 = 93%), and the 2-year OS was 27% (95% CI: 13%-44%, I 2 = 97%). The pooled estimate of the median OS was 8.85 months (95% CI: 7.33-10.36, I 2 = 91%). Furthermore, the result indicated that the 6-month PFS was 28% (95% CI: 18%-40%, I 2 = 95%), 1-year PFS was 15% (95% CI: 8%-23%, I 2 = 92%), and the 18-month PFS was 10% (95% CI: 3%-20%, I 2 = 93%). The pooled estimate of the median PFS was 3.72 months (95% CI: 2.44-5.00, I 2 = 99%). For ORR, the pooled estimate of ORR was 10% (95% CI: 2%-20%, I 2 = 88%). We further analyzed the incidence of PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitor-related AEs, and the pooled incidence of AEs was 70% (95% CI: 58%-81%, I 2 = 94%). The incidence of AEs ≥ grade 3 was 19% (95% CI: 11%-30%, I 2 = 94%). The funnel plot for the median PFS and median OS was symmetric with no significant differences in Egger's test and Begg's test. The sensitivity analysis revealed that our results were stable and reliable. Conclusion: The results of this meta-analysis suggest that anti-PD-1/PD-L1 therapy is relatively safe but could not prolong survival in glioma. Abstract:Objective Various psychological interventions have been demonstrated to be effective at preventing anxiety and depression symptoms in patients with gastrointestinal (GI) cancer. However, it remains unclear which intervention is the best option. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of various psychological interventions on anxiety and depression in symptomatic patients with GI cancer. Methods The PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, CNKI, WanFang Data, and VIP databases were systematically searched from inception to June 2023 to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The primary outcomes were anxiety and depression levels. Two reviewers independently selected the studies, extracted the data based on prespecified criteria, and evaluated the risk of bias using the Cochrane Collaboration risk of bias tool. Stata 14.0 was used to conduct network meta-analysis. Results Thirty-two RCTs (2453 patients) involving 9 psychological interventions were included. The results of the network meta-analysis showed that cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT; mean difference [MD] = −4.98, 95% CI (−7.04, −2.93), relaxation therapy (MD = -4.39, 95% CI (−7.90, −0.88), reminiscence therapy (MD = −5.01, 95% CI (−8.20, −1.81)), and narrative nursing (MD = -4.89, 95% CI (−8.54, −1.23)) significantly reduced anxiety levels, and CBT (MD = -2.15, 95% CI (−4.28, −0.02), reminiscence therapy (MD = -7.20, 95% CI (−10.48, −3.91), and narrative nursing (MD = -7.20, 95% CI (−10.48, −3.91)) significantly reduced depression levels in patients with GI cancer compared with conventional nursing care. Conclusion The findings of this network meta-analysis revealed that CBT, reminiscence therapy and narrative nursing can be actively considered as part of sequential therapy to reduce anxiety and depression levels in patients with GI cancer.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To study the incidence of depression among patients undergoing surgery for high-grade glioma, document factors associated with the presence of depression, and examine the relationship between depression and patient outcome.METHODS: Physician and patient reports of depression were analyzed immediately postoperatively and again 3 and 6 months after surgery for high-grade glioma. Physician-reported depression was defined according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, ed 4. Patient self-assessment of depression was based on responses to questions contained in two validated functional status surveys. Concordance of physician- and patient-reported depression was examined, along with the extent of use of pharmacological treatment for depression. Additional outcomes examined included quality of life, survival, patient satisfaction, and posttreatment complications.RESULTS: Data from 598 patients were analyzed. In the early postoperative period, physicians reported depression in 15% of patients, whereas 93% of patients reported symptoms consistent with depression. The incidence of patient self-reported depression remained similar at 3- and 6-month follow-up, whereas physician reported depression increased from 15% in the early postoperative period to 22% at both 3- and 6-month follow-up. Concordance between physician recognition of depression and treatment of depression was low initially (33%) and increased at 3 and 6 months (51 and 60%, respectively). As compared with patients who were not depressed, survival was shorter and complications were more common among depressed patients.CONCLUSION: Symptoms of depression were common immediately after surgery for glioma, and they increased throughout the 6-month period after surgery. These findings support the hypothesis that clinically important depression is a common complication in patients with high-grade glioma. Concordance between physician recognition of depression and self-reports of depression by patients was low. Concordance between physician recognition of depression and initiation of pharmacological antidepressant therapy was fair in the early postoperative period and improved somewhat over the subsequent 6-month period; however, within the 6-month period after surgery for glioma, antidepressant therapy was provided for only 60% of patients in whom the physician recognized depressive symptoms and in only 15% of patients who self-reported symptoms of depression. Findings from this observational study suggest the need for a controlled trial that is designed to test the hypothesis that more attention to the identification of postoperative depression and aggressive treatment of depressive symptoms can improve the quality of life and survival of patients after surgery for high-grade glioma.

This meta-analysis attempts to assess the association between statins and glioblastoma. Methods: We searched 4 databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library) for articles that evaluate the effect of statins on the survival of patients with glioblastoma. Two reviewers were asked to assess the quality of the studies and extract the data regarding progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Result: A total of 5 studies met the inclusion criteria with 430 statin users and 2089 nonstatin users. All 5 studies were retrospectively analyzed. The pooled hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. There was no benefit of statins found pertaining to the survival of glioblastoma patients in both PFS (HR, 0.97; CI, 0.84–1.13) and OS (HR, 0.98; CI, 0.87–1.11). In a subgroup defined by the patterns of statin use, it was determined that usage before glioblastoma diagnosis favored the OS of patients (HR, 0.85). The result, however, failed to demonstrate a statistically significant difference. Conclusion: Use of statins was not associated with prolonged survival of patients with glioblastoma. Further well-designed randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm.

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the effects of cognitive behavioral therapy on anxiety and depressive symptoms in patients with advanced cancer. Methods A systematical search was conducted on Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, PsycINFO, China Biomedical Database, CNKI, VIP Database, and Wanfang database, and the search time was from the inception to May 26, 2023. Randomized controlled trials focusing on the effects of cognitive behavioral therapy on anxiety and depressive symptoms in patients with advanced cancer were collected using relevant terms such as advanced stage, cancer, anxiety, depression, and cognitive behavioral therapy. The quality of included studies was evaluated using the Cochrane risk of bias (ROB 2.0) tool, and meta-analysis was performed using RevMan5.4 software. Results 15 articles, including 1597 patients, were included. Twelve of the studies reported the effect of CBT on anxiety symptoms in 1,485 advanced cancer patients; Fifteen studies reported the effect of CBT on depressive symptoms in 1,861 advanced cancer patients. The results of meta-analysis showed that CBT was effective in decreasing anxiety [SMD = -0.55, 95% CI (−0.82, −0.27), P < 0.001, I 2 = 84%] and depressive symptoms [SMD = -0.38, 95% CI (−0.58, −0.17), P < 0.001, I 2 = 78%] in patients with advanced cancer compared to controls, especially the interventions that were delivered lasted for 2–8 weeks. Conclusion Cognitive behavioral therapy lasting for 2–8 weeks is effective for anxiety and depressive symptoms in advanced cancer patients to a moderate degree, but more rigorous research is needed to guide the choice between online and face-to-face delivery mode and the priority of self-guided versus therapist-guided interventions still needs to be studied.

Abstract:Abstract Depression and anxiety are common comorbidities in breast cancer patients. Whether depression and anxiety are associated with breast cancer progression or mortality is unclear. Herein, based on a systematic literature search, 17 eligible studies involving 282,203 breast cancer patients were included. The results showed that depression was associated with cancer recurrence [1.24 (1.07, 1.43)], all-cause mortality [1.30 (1.23, 1.36)], and cancer-specific mortality [1.29 (1.11, 1.49)]. However, anxiety was associated with recurrence [1.17 (1.02, 1.34)] and all-cause mortality [1.13 (1.07, 1.19)] but not with cancer-specific mortality [1.05 (0.82, 1.35)]. Comorbidity of depression and anxiety is associated with all-cause mortality [1.34 (1.24, 1.45)] and cancer-specific mortality [1.45 (1.11, 1.90)]. Subgroup analyses demonstrated that clinically diagnosed depression and anxiety, being female and of younger age (<60 years), and shorter follow-up duration (≤5 years) were related to a poorer prognosis. Our study highlights the critical role of depression/anxiety as an independent factor in predicting breast cancer recurrence and survival. Further research should focus on a favorable strategy that works best to improve outcomes among breast cancer patients with mental disorders.

Abstract:Background: Numerous studies have demonstrated that psychological interventions are effective in alleviating anxiety and depression in patients with cancer. However, the optimal psychological intervention to alleviate anxiety and depression in patients with cancer remains unknown. This study was carried out to compare and rank the comparative effectiveness of various psychological interventions on anxiety and depression in patients with cancer. Methods: Databases, namely PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, PsycINFO, CNKI, WanFang, VIP and CBM were systematically searched from their inception dates to December 2023 for randomized controlled trials of psychological interventions for anxiety and depression in patients with cancer. Utilizing the Cochrane Review Manager 5.4, we evaluated the risk of bias in the studies included in the current study based on the Cochrane Handbook 5.1.0 Methodological Quality Evaluation Criteria. The NMA was conducted using STATA 15.0. This study did not involve human participants and therefore did not require ethical approval. Results: Thirty-one randomized controlled trials involving 3471 participants were included. MT [SMD = 1.35, 95% CI (0.76, 1.93)] and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) [SMD = 0.97, 95% CI (0.53, 1.42)] were superior to usual care in alleviating anxiety. Besides, interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) [SMD = 1.17, 95% CI (0.06, 2.28)], CBT [SMD = 0.97, 95 % CI (0.63, 1.30)], and MT [SMD = 0.93, 95% CI (0.35, 1.50)] were superior to usual care in alleviating depression. In addition, CBT was superior to family therapy in alleviating depression [SMD = 0.73, 95% CI (0.08, 1.38)]. The MT, CBT, and IPT ranked in the top three in alleviating anxiety, while IPT, CBT, and MT ranked in the top three in alleviating depression. Conclusion: MT and IPT would be a more appropriate option in alleviating anxiety and depression in patients with cancer, respectively. This study also suggested that CBT had a significant effect in alleviating negative emotions in patients with cancer. However, the results need to be validated by high-quality and large-sample studies.

Abstract:Although the relationship between psychological factors and pancreatic cancer outcomes has been widely discussed, controversy remains. We will for the first time systematically summarize the literature to explore the correlation of anxiety and depression to the prognosis of patients with pancreatic cancer. The findings will fill existing research gaps, informing healthcare providers about better psychological care and medical treatment. The following databases will be retrieved from their inception to July 2023: Cochrane Library, MEDLINE (PubMed), Web of Science, EMBASE, and four Chinese databases (Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang Database, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, and Chongqing VIP Chinese Science and Technology Periodical Database). The World Health Organization Clinical Trials Registry, Chinese Clinical Registry, and ClinicalTrials.gov will be searched to identify other related studies. A manual search will be performed to identify missing eligible studies based on the reference list of selected articles. The search will focus on studies published in Chinese or English. To assess the risk of bias in the selected articles, Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale (NOS) will be used for the cohort study. Funnel plots and Egger's test will be used to assess whether publication bias exists. Moreover, the Grading of Recommendations Assessment Development and Evaluation (GRADE) will be utilized to analyze the credibility of the results from selected articles. Two independent evaluators will implement the study selection and data extraction, as well as evaluate the risk of bias and evidence quality. Data will be analyzed using Stata 16.0. Trial registration: PROSPERO registration number is CRD42022366232.

Abstract:Objective: This study aims to assess the effect of mindfulness intervention on negative emotions (anxiety and depression) and quality of life in malignant tumor patients. Methods: The databases, including CNKI, VIP, Wanfang, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database disc (CBMdisc), PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science (WoS), were searched from inception to January 2024. Randomized controlled trials examining the effects of mindfulness intervention on negative emotions and quality of life in malignant tumor patients were selected. Meta-analysis was conducted using RevMan 5.1. Results: A total of 11 studies involving 993 patients were included. Compared with usual care, mindfulness intervention effectively reduced anxiety [SMD = -0.81, 95% CI (-1.01, -0.60), p < 0.00001], depression [SMD = -0.86, 95% CI (-1.01, -0.70), p < 0.00001], and improved patients' quality of life [SMD = 0.64, 95% CI (0.50, 0.78), p < 0.00001]. Conclusion: Mindfulness intervention can effectively alleviate negative emotions such as anxiety and depression in malignant tumor patients and positively impact their quality of life.

Abstract:Background: The present standard treatment rarely allows the complete removal of glioblastoma (GBM). So postoperative treatments are provided to prevent or delay tumor recurrence. The overall survival (OS) rate and safety of postoperative chemotherapy alone, or combined with radiotherapy (RT), or programmed cell death-1 (PD-1) inhibitor in GBM is still unclear. The present goal was to explore postoperative treatment's effect on the survival and safety of patients with GBM.Methods: We searched the mainstream online databases for clinical studies of RT and chemotherapy and PD-1 inhibitors in the treatment of GBM published up to May 2020. The patients in the experimental group accepted an anti-PD-1 drug alone and RT + chemotherapy, whereas the controlled patients were treated with docetaxel alone. The literature qualities were assessed using Cochrane Risk of Bias 2.0, and studies were assigned. The meta-analysis was conducted by RevMan 5.4 software.Results: A total of 927 articles were identified through the online database search. The articles unable to meet the inclusion criteria were excluded leaving 6 studies for inclusion in the study. Compared with docetaxel-based chemotherapy for GBM, combined RT chemotherapy and PD-1 inhibitor therapy had better OS [mean difference (MD), -1.75; 95% confidence interval (CI): -2.99 to -0.51; P=0.006] and progression-free survival (PFS) and a lower incidence of adverse reactions (MD, -7.03; 95% CI: -7.64 to -6.42; P<0.00001) above grade III.Conclusions: Postoperative combination of RT and chemotherapy and PD-1 inhibitors had some advantages over docetaxel in terms of effectiveness. More clinical trials are needed to confirm effectiveness.

Abstract:Background Patients with breast cancer often experience severe psychological distress, especially anxiety and depression, leading to poorer quality of life, shortened survival time and increased mortality. The objective of the review will be to summarise data on the prevalence and risk factors of anxiety and depression in patients with breast cancer. Methods and analysis Two reviewers will be applied in seven databases, including Web of Science, PubMed, EMBASE, Wan Fang Data Knowledge Service Platform, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, Chinese Scientific Journal Database (VIP database), China National Knowledge Infrastructure and for studies on the prevalence and risk factors of depression in patients with breast cancer, which should be published from inception to Feb 2020 in English, Chinese, French and Spanish. The selection of studies, data extraction and risk of bias assessment will be done independently by two reviewers. Data synthesis will be carried out using RevMan V.5.3 software. The heterogeneity will be determined by the I2 test. Publication bias will be evaluated by generating a funnel plot and performing the Begg and Egger test. The quality of the systematic review will be assessed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation Tool criteria. Ethics and dissemination No ethical approval is required. This protocol will not involve individual patient information and endangering participant rights. Impact of cancer diagnoses on the outcomes of patients with COVID-19: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Background The COVID-19 has caused significant mortality and morbidity across the globe. Patients with cancer are especially vulnerable given their immunocompromised state. We aimed to determine the proportion of COVID-19 patients with cancer, their severity and mortality outcomes through a systematic review and meta-analysis (MA). Methods Systematic review was performed through online databases, PubMed, Medline and Google Scholar, with keywords listed in the Methods section (1 November 2019–31 December 2020). Studies with clinical outcomes of at least 10 COVID-19 patients and at least one with a diagnosis of cancer were included. The studies for MA were assessed with PRISMA guidelines and appraised with Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. The data were pooled using a random-effects model using STATA software. The main outcomes were planned before data collection, including proportion of patients with cancer among COVID-19 populations, relative risk (RR) of severe outcomes and death of patients with cancer compared with general COVID-19 patients. Results We identified 57 case series (63 413 patients), with 230 patients with cancer with individual patient data (IPD). We found that the pooled proportion of cancer among COVID-19 patients was 0.04 (95% CI 0.03 to 0.05, I 2 =97.69%, p<0.001). The pooled RR of death was 1.44 (95% CI 1.19 to 1.76) between patients with cancer and the general population with COVID-19 infection. The pooled RR of severe outcome was 1.49 (95% CI 1.18 to 1.87) between cancer and general COVID-19 patients. The presence of lung cancer and stage IV cancer did not result in significantly increased RR of severe outcome. Among the available IPD, only age and gender were associated with severe outcomes. Conclusion Patients with cancer were at a higher risk of severe and death outcomes from COVID-19 infection as compared with general COVID-19 populations. Limitations of this study include publication bias. A collaborative effort is required for a more complete database.
