Prevalence of Depression and Anxiety Symptoms Among Patients With Cancer in Najran, Saudi Arabia

Abstract:Background: Depression and anxiety are associated with poor health consequences in patients with cancer, and these mental health issues may affect cancer treatment. They are frequently triggered by stress, and cancer is among the most stressful conditions experienced by a person. Depression and anxiety are related to several sociodemographic variables in patients with cancer. However, only a few studies have examined the prevalence of depression and anxiety symptoms in patients with cancer in Saudi Arabia. Objectives: To detect the prevalence of depression and anxiety symptoms among patients with cancer at the Najran Oncology Center in Najran, Saudi Arabia, and determine the risk factors associated with these symptoms. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from April 1, 2023, to September 30, 2023, on a convenience sample of patients diagnosed with cancer who were receiving chemotherapy at Najran Oncology Center, King Khalid Hospital, Najran, Saudi Arabia, and who agreed to participate in the study. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale was used. Data on the demographic characteristics of the patients were collected using a self-administered questionnaire. Moreover, medical data were collected from the medical records of the patients. Results: In total, 92 patients with various cancer diagnoses were recruited in this study. Among them, 51 and 41 were women and men, respectively. Moreover, 81 were married and 11 were either single, widow, or divorced. The mean age of the participants was 51.24 ± 15.15 years. The prevalence rates of depression and anxiety were 42.4% and 23.9%, respectively. There were significant associations between depression and marital status in patients with cancer-associated pain and those with a current history of chemotherapy. Furthermore, the association between anxiety and cancer-associated pain was significant. However, marital status was not associated with anxiety. Age, sex, family history of mental disorders, cancer duration, current cancer stage, and surgical interventions were not associated with the prevalence of depression and anxiety. Conclusions: Our findings underline the importance of identifying depression and anxiety in patients with cancer. Marital status, presence of pain, and current chemotherapy history were significantly associated with depression and pain with anxiety. Recommendations: Further studies with a higher number of patients with cancer should be conducted in Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries. Screening for depression and anxiety symptoms should be a part of the comprehensive evaluation of patients with cancer. Appropriate treatment interventions must be provided to patients with cancer who present with mental disorders.
A cross-sectional study of anxiety and marital quality among women with breast cancer at a university clinic in western Saudi Arabia

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: To examine relationship between the quality of marital relationship and anxiety among women with breast cancer (BC) in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA).METHODS: This cross-sectional study recruited a consecutive series of 49 married women with BC seen in the Al-Amoudi Breast Cancer Center of Excellence at King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, KSA in early 2013. Participants completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Spouse Perception Scale, and Quality of Marriage Index forms, and answered questions on demographic and cancer characteristics.RESULTS: Anxiety symptoms indicating "possible" anxiety disorder were present in 10.4% and "probable" anxiety disorder in 14.6% (25% total). No significant relationship was found between the quality of marital relationship and anxiety symptoms (B=-0.04, standard error=0.05, t=-0.81, p=0.42). Anxiety was primarily driven by low education, poor socioeconomic status, and young age.CONCLUSION: Anxiety symptoms are prevalent among married women with BC seen in a university-based clinic in the KSA. Further research is needed to determine whether a diagnosis of BC adversely affects marital relationship, and whether this is the cause for anxiety in these women.

Abstract:Introduction: Brain tumor is a devastating and often fatal diagnosis; quality of life and patient well-being are important goals of treatment. This study addresses the gap in culture-specific literature exploring the needs and coping strategies of brain tumor patients within an LMIC setting. Methodology: A qualitative approach was undertaken using an exploratory descriptive study design. In-depth interviews were conducted to capture the perspective of 250 brain tumor patients at a private tertiary center followed by extensive content analysis to identify major themes and sub-themes across responses. Results: The analysis identified three major themes: (i) Factors affecting the lives of brain tumor survivors (BTSs) and their impact (ii) What works to improve QoL according to the survivors' perspectives, and (iii) Coping tactics & fostering healthy relationships. The need for financial navigation strategies improved patient-physician relationships, and reinforcing positive coping strategies were emphasized. Conclusion: In our population, family support and spiritual connection played an important role in helping patients mitigate the psychosocial burden of illness. However, financial concerns were pervasive and need to be addressed for better overall well-being.

Abstract:Journal of Health Psychology, Ahead of Print. The study aimed to explore the relationship between religiosity, psychological distress, and quality of life (QOL) in Saudi breast cancer patients. Utilizing a multi-center cross-sectional design, 277 patients were recruited. Patients completed questionnaires assessing religiosity, depression, anxiety, suicidality, and QOL. Results revealed a high prevalence of depression (35.7%) and anxiety (18.1%), with no significant variations in internal religiosity across different health stages, despite high levels of perceived social support. Suicidal ideation was reported by a small proportion of patients (2.5%). Multivariate analysis identified anxiety, therapy side effects, and breast symptoms as significant predictors of depression, while depression and previous psychiatric treatment predicted anxiety levels. QOL assessments indicated that body image received the highest satisfaction ratings, while sexual function received the lowest. These findings highlight the critical need for integrated mental health support in the treatment regimen of breast cancer patients.

Abstract:Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the correlations of religiosity and psychological resilience with mental health among cancer patients and to examine whether religiosity and psychological resilience can predict mental health. Method: The sample consisted of 329 patients. Researchers applied Islamic Religiosity Scale, Wagnild and Young Resilience Scale, and the scale of Hospital Anxiety and Depression. Results: The results showed that there are positive, statistically significant correlations between religiosity and psychological resilience, while there were negative, statistically significant correlations of religiosity and psychological resilience with mental health. And there are correlations between the alternative therapeutic interventions currently used to religiosity and psychological resilience, while there were no statistically significant correlations between alternative therapeutic interventions that the patient will use in the future to religiosity and psychological resilience. The results also revealed the possibility of predicting mental health through religiosity and psychological resilience. Conclusion: These results emphasized the importance of increased religiosity and psychological resilience among cancer patients.

Abstract:OMEGA - Journal of Death and Dying, Ahead of Print. This study was conducted to research the effects of spiritual well-being on death anxiety and psychological resilience in cancer patients. This cross-sectional, descriptive and correlational study was carried out with 260 cancer patients who were admitted to oncology and haematology outpatient clinic of a university hospital in east of Turkey between October 2021 and April 2022. The data were collected by using "Personal Information Form", "Spiritual Well-being Scale (FACIT-sp), Death Anxiety Scale (DAS) and The Brief Resilience Scale (BRS). It was found that mean DAS total score of cancer patients was 12.51 ± 3.39, while their mean FACIT-sp total score was 26.10 ± 6.93 and their mean BRS total score was 16.1 ± 7.05. It was found that FACIT-sp total score affected DAS and BRS total score positively, while DAS total score affected BRS total score negatively (p < .001). It was found that cancer patients had moderate level of spiritual well-being and psychological resilience and high level of death anxiety. It was also found that death anxiety and psychological resilience of cancer patients increased as their spiritual well-being levels increased. Psychological resilience was found to decrease as death anxiety increased.

Abstract:Among several forms of miseries experienced by cancer patients, one of the significant experiential problems is the inevitable fear of death. The present study aimed at exploring the relationship between death anxiety, perceived social support, and different demographic variables. A sample of 80 breast cancer patients was recruited from different departments of oncology in Pakistan. Research findings revealed that death anxiety was negatively associated with social support. Moreover, it was found that education and marital status were associated with death anxiety among patients with breast cancer. Results suggest that social support assist in reducing death anxiety and enhance their recovery course.

Abstract:Background: Cancer is one of the most common causes of mortality & morbidity globally, accounting for an estimated 10 million deaths in 2020. The diagnosis of cancer is a stressful event causing significant psychological distresses, most commonly depression and anxiety, directly interfering with disease outcome and quality of life. The aim of the study is to assess the level of depression and anxiety among adult patients with solid tumours as well as the association of various socio-demographic and clinical factors with them. Methods: This cross-sectional type of descriptive study was conducted at the National Institute of Cancer Research & Hospital (NICRH), Dhaka for a period of 12 months. A total of 405 histologically confirmed adult solid tumour patients were enrolled in the study using purposive sampling after fulfilling inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were collected from the patients by face-to-face interviews using a semi-structured questionnaire and Bangla version of the DASS-21 scale. Results: In this study, the mean age of the respondents was 47.4 ± 16.5 years, the respondents were predominantly male with the male-tofemale ratio being 3:2 roughly. Gastrointestinal cancers (27.4%) were most prevalent, followed by lung (19.5%), gynaecological (11.4%), breast cancers and sarcomas (both 9.4%). The majority of the patients were undergoing chemotherapy (71.9%) and harbouring stage IV disease (64.4%) with duration of illness for less than twelve months (62% of respondents). The prevalence of depressive and anxious symptomatology among all patients was 38.02% and 42.96%, respectively. More than half (53.3%) of the adult patients with solid tumours were suffering from either of depression and/or anxiety. 19.7% had mild, 13.6% had moderate, 3.7% had severe and 1% had extremely severe levels of depression, while the percentages were 17.3%, 11.6%, 9.4% and 4.7% respectively, for severity of anxiety. In inpatient setting, depressive disorders were significantly higher in females than males (p<0.01) and among the lung cancer patients; in contrast, gastrointestinal cancer and the presence of co-morbidities predisposed more to anxiety (p<0.05). Although mode of treatment and severity of disease showed no significant relationship with the prevalence of depression or anxiety, ECOG performance status was found to have a significant impact on both of the disorders. On analysis of the socio-demographic variables, illiterate and low-income people were seen to suffer more with a severe and extremely severe level of depression, on the other hand, homemakers and lower socio-economic class had higher levels of anxiety. Conclusion: The study findings demonstrated a higher prevalence of depressive and anxious symptomatology in the inpatient setting; therefore, counselling, screening, and timely evaluation of mental health should be a part of the standard protocol of oncology care. Associations among patient characteristics, health-related quality of life, and spiritual well-being among Arab Muslim cancer patients

Abstract:Background: Despite Islam being the world's second largest religion and despite the fact that there are 22 Arabic-speaking nations representing North Africa and the Middle East, little is known about the relationship between spiritual well-being and health-related quality of life (HrQoL) for Arabic-speaking Muslims in treatment for cancer. Aim: The study's aim was to determine whether spiritual well-being is correlated with HrQoL and whether participants' age, sex, marital status, site of cancer, and stage of disease are related to spiritual well-being. Design: Using a cross-sectional design, a total of 159 Arabic-speaking, study-eligible cancer patients who were in treatment at the King Hussein Cancer Center (KHCC), Amman, Jordan, completed three questionnaires: a demographic questionnaire; the Functional Assessment in Cancer Therapy-General (FACT-G), which assesses the physical, social, functional, and emotional domains of HrQoL; and the Functional Assessment in Chronic Illness Therapy-Spiritual Well-being (FACIT-Sp). Results: Physical well-being was negatively correlated with the FACIT-Sp for men, divorced, and stage IV disease. Social Well-being was positively correlated with the FACIT-Sp for ages 18-34 and 35-49 years; both sexes; married, never married, and divorced; breast, bone/sarcoma, and gastrointestinal cancers; and stages II-IV. Emotional Well-being was negatively correlated with the FACIT-Sp for ages 35-49; males; never married; and stages III and IV. Functional Well-being was positively correlated with the FACIT-Sp for ages 35-49 and 50-64; both sexes; married or never married; and stages II and III. Age and cancer site showed a positive relationship with spiritual well-being. Conclusions: The FACIT-Sp distinguishes between domains of HrQoL and patient characteristics. Further study on the unique contribution of the FACIT-Sp's Peace and Meaning subscales to HrQoL is needed.

Abstract:Abstract Background Statistics reveal that the number of women diagnosed with breast cancer is increasing in Egypt. It is seen as a terrifying disease due to its high mortality rate and its impacts on the self-image and the sexual relationship. Many of its patients experience psychological reactions and may have psychiatric morbidities. The present study aimed to identify the prevalence and associated psychosocial factors of anxiety, depressive disorders, and perceived stress among breast cancer patients in Menoufia university hospitals. This cross-sectional study was conducted in the Clinical Oncology Department, Menoufia University. Sixty patients were subjected to questionnaires for socio-demographic data, structured psychiatric clinical interview to screen for psychiatric diagnoses, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II) for measuring the emotional, cognitive and motivational symptoms of depression, Manifest Anxiety Scale to assess the degree of anxiety, and Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) to assess stress level. Results The prevalence of depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and perceived stress were 68.6%, 73.3%, and 78.1% respectively. Moderate to severe anxiety, depression, and stress were more prevalent among advanced disease patients, patients who underwent surgery, married patients, patients who were living in rural areas, illiterate, and those without satisfactory income but without statistically significant difference except for the effect of occupation on the anxiety state as unemployed patients had significantly higher prevalence of moderate to severe anxiety (100%) than employed patients p = 0.003. Conclusion Depressive disorders, anxiety, and perceived stress are common psychiatric disorders among the studied breast cancer patients. Understanding these common psychiatric disorders and associated stress can help to plan for their management.

Abstract:Study purpose: this study aims to analyze QOL and psychosocial impact on patients with blood disorders. Methods: A cross-sectional survey design is adopted in this study. The survey questionnaire included SF-36 form for measuring quality of life (QOL), along with psychosocial impact assessment scale. Adult patients with different types of blood disorders were recruited for the survey. Out of the 417 responses received, 389 were considered for data analysis and the remaining were avoided due to incomplete data. Results: In terms of psychosocial impact scales, the highest mean is observed for financial stress (4.09 ± 1.22), followed by social exclusion (3.76 ± 1.19) and relationship challenges (3.31 ± 1.18). Among the QOL scales, the highest mean was observed for pain (3.81 ± 1.17), followed by physical functioning (3.68 ± 1.12). Statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) were observed among the participants groups characterized by age and type of disorder. Strong positive correlations between social exclusion and general health (r = 0.513), as well as pain and relationship challenges (r = 0.735) were observed. Conclusion: Given the existing challenges in social exclusion, poor awareness, and support there is a need to develop comprehensive and personalized treatment plans integrating physical and mental support, awareness creation, and financial support.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: Not only tumor patients suffer enormously from their disease, also the caregivers are massively affected by the disease of their relatives. In this study, we investigate the psychological burden in caregivers of outpatient malignant brain tumor patients.PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifty caregivers of patients with primary malignant brain tumors were included in our study. Study participants filled in a form with demographic details, a self-established questionnaire concerning general well-being and three established psychological questionnaires to assess anxiety, depression, stress and social support: The "Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale" (HADS), the "Perceived Stress Scale" (PSS-10) and the "Social Support Questionnaire" (F-SozU).RESULTS: Caregivers of patients with primary malignant brain tumors showed in the HADS clinically relevant anxiety in 49% and depression in 20% of the cases. The stress level of the caregivers was increased (mean: 18 points) compared to the general population mean: 13 points), although they felt well supported by their social environment (mean: 4.25 points; general population 3.99 points). There was a significant positive correlation between anxiety and depression (p < 0.001). Female caregivers suffered significantly more from anxiety (p = 0.017) and stress (p = 0.012) than their male counterparts. No correlation was found between tumor grade, age of relatives and patients or the state of living together with the patient and anxiety or depression.CONCLUSIONS: Although the caregivers felt well supported by their social environment, stress, anxiety and depression are common phenomena in caregivers of patients with malignant brain tumors. Especially female ones have an increased risk for developing these comorbidities.

Abstract:All cancer patients experience distress from the diagnosis, the effects of the disease or the treatment. Clinically significant distress decreases overall quality of life and the recognition of distress with prompt intervention is essential. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network distress thermometer (NCCN-DT) is a validated measuring tool that has been utilized in the primary brain tumor population to detect psychologic distress thereby provoking a referral process to the appropriate support system. Brain tumor patients commonly reported emotional and physical distress encompassing: fatigue, fears, memory and concentration and worry. More research is needed to identify the stressors of all primary brain tumor patients and their caretakers and integrate appropriate interventions to improve health-related quality of life in both groups.
Assessing quality of life and depression in non-metastatic breast cancer patients following surgical treatment: A cross-sectional study in Lebanon

Abstract:Breast cancer is a global health concern that significantly impacts the quality of life (QOL) of individuals. This study aims to comprehensively examine the interplay between QOL and depression among nonmetastatic breast cancer patients in Lebanon, a region with limited research in this context. A cross-sectional study was conducted at Hammoud Hospital-University Medical Center from January 2018 to January 2023. Data was collected through a self-administered questionnaire distributed as Google Forms via WhatsApp. A total of 193 patients had non-metastatic breast cancer. Out of these, 81 valid responses were obtained. The Patient Health Questionnaire and Quality of Life Scale were used to assess depression and QOL, respectively. A total of 81 patients were included with mean age 54.4 years. Results revealed that 77.8% of patients experienced provisional depression, with 35.8% meeting criteria for major depressive disorder. Financial status and chronic diseases were associated with the likelihood of developing major depressive disorder. The mean QOL score was 81.14, lower than the average for healthy individuals. Educational level and presence of chronic diseases were significant factors influencing QOL. Postsurgical depression prevalence is substantial, underscoring the importance of integrating mental health care. Economic status and comorbidities are influential factors, necessitating targeted interventions. Breast cancer's impact on QOL is profound, falling below that of other chronic conditions. Education empowers coping, while comorbidities impact QOL. Our findings emphasize the multidimensional nature of breast cancer care, advocating for holistic support and addressing emotional well-being.

Abstract:Background: Diagnosis with a brain tumor is a critical event in the lives of patients and their families due to poor medical prognoses and complex clinical care. Spiritual care interventions have been known to have meaningful effects in morbid diagnoses and palliative medicine, but their role in the neuro-oncologic patient's experience is poorly understood. This systematic review explores the role of spirituality and its relevance to patient care in the diverse setting of brain tumors. Methods: A comprehensive systematic review was conducted following PRISMA-SR guidelines. PUBMED was queried for studies on spirituality and neuro-oncology. Identified studies included RCTs, interviews, surveys, and case reports that examined spirituality in neuro-oncological clinical care, quality of life, and patient experience. Of 214 articles identified, 21 studies met the inclusion criteria, and the results were narratively synthesized. Results: Spirituality may play a significant role in mental well-being by reconciling existential questions faced by both patients and caregivers, and can serve as a valuable resource to improve mental well-being and reduce rates of palliative caregiver burnout. However, the paucity of studies examining the education and integration of spiritual awareness within the clinical literature warrants further study. Conclusions: While spiritual care interventions may improve the quality of life and mental wellness of patients and their caregivers, it is unclear how spiritual awareness and education should best be implemented. Further research is needed to better understand how key components of spiritual awareness can be integrated into medical education to deepen the patient–physician relationship and improve clinical experiences.

Abstract:Introduction: Depression and anxiety are common among breast cancer patients, due to the ongoing mental distress during illness. This study examines the impact of family support on depression and anxiety changes in Jordanian women undergoing mastectomy and reconstruction surgery. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study to investigate the effect between family support and depression/anxiety levels in women post-mastectomy in Jordan. Participants included breast cancer patients who had undergone mastectomy surgery, meeting specified inclusion criteria. We collected data on socio-demographic variables via a questionnaire between October 2023 and January 2024. Depression and anxiety levels were assessed using the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale - 21 Items (DASS-21), while social support was evaluated using the Social Support Survey. Results: A significantly negative correlation was observed between the DASS-21 score and social support, indicating that higher levels of social support were associated with lower levels of depression, anxiety, and stress (p-value: 0.001). Additionally, analyzing the correlation between physical therapy, social support (median scores: 76 vs. 90, p = 0.021), and DASS-21 (median scores: 25 vs. 11, p < 0.001) revealed significant findings. Specifically, individuals who had received physical therapy exhibited significantly lower DASS-21 scores and higher social support scores. Conclusion: Our study underscores the significant role of family support in alleviating depression and anxiety levels among women with breast cancer. Strong family support emerges as a key factor in improving the emotional well-being of these individuals.

Abstract:In this work, a compact system-on-package module integrating a 60-GHz amplitude shift-keying (ASK) receiver has been presented for wireless gigabit point-to-point applications. The whole ASK receiver (Rx) has fully integrated into a 6-layer low-temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) single substrate embedding four GaAs circuits, a low-pass filter (LPF), and bias components. The fabricated Rx system-on-package (SoP) module is as small as 16.4 × 6.9 × 0.68 mm3 and shows that the flatness of below −2dBm is obtained up to 1.25 GHz in the IF output signal and the conversion gain is 38 dB.

Abstract:Background: Currently, breast cancer is the most prevalent type of cancer affecting women, and the number of newly diagnosed cases continues to increase both in Jordan and globally. Upon receiving a cancer diagnosis, the suffering experienced by patients intensifies as they grapple with the debilitating side effects that hinder their ability to carry out routine activities. Purpose: This study aims to assess the impact of cancer pain on functional status and quality of life (QOL) among Jordanian women with breast cancer. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional design and structured interviews were conducted in the Oncology Unit at Al-Bashir Hospital with a sample of 150 eligible Jordanian women with breast cancer who provided data on pain and functional status, and QOL using four Arabic questionnaires (brief pain inventory, functional status SF-12 questionnaire, and quality of life index) to measure pain and functional status and QOL, descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and regression statistical test were utilized to analyze the study data. Results: A Significant positive correlation (r = 0.342) was found between cancer pain and functional status interference, a significant negative correlation (r = -0.134) between quality of life and functional status interference, and a significant negative correlation (r = -0.211) between pain and quality of life. Patients with higher intensity of cancer pain are more likely to experience low functional status and poor QOL. Conclusion: Breast cancer patients experience alterations in their quality of life as a result of cancer-related pain, which has a detrimental impact on their ability to carry out daily activities and disrupts their functional abilities. Healthcare providers must take these alterations into account and effectively handle them. Understanding the relationship between cancer pain and breast cancer can aid nurses in managing symptoms and providing holistic care, ultimately improving the quality of life.
