Abstract:This paper aims to present the case studies that have been developed in the context of Cloud4all project (Cloud platforms Lead to Open and Universal access for people with Disabilities and for All; CN: FP7-289016). Cloud4all is an international collaborative effort to build and test key elements of the Global Public Inclusive Infrastructure (GPII) (http://gpii.net/). Cloud4all/GPII aims to develop a complete new paradigm in accessibility, by replacing adaptation of individual products and services for a person with automatic-personalisation of any mainstream product or service, using cloud technologies to activate and augment any natural (built-in) accessibility the product or service has, based on a profile of the user's needs (http://www.cloud4all.info). A first step in the implementation path that has already started to be followed in the project has been the identification of those case studies that would be of primary concern for Cloud4all and the overall GPII.

Abstract:Purpose of review: The purpose of this review is to summarize the existing literature on artificial intelligence technology utilization in laryngology, highlighting recent advances and current barriers to implementation. Recent findings: The volume of publications studying applications of artificial intelligence in laryngology has rapidly increased, demonstrating a strong interest in utilizing this technology. Vocal biomarkers for disease screening, deep learning analysis of videolaryngoscopy for lesion identification, and auto-segmentation of videofluoroscopy for detection of aspiration are a few of the new ways in which artificial intelligence is poised to transform clinical care in laryngology. Increasing collaboration is ongoing to establish guidelines and standards for the field to ensure generalizability. Summary: Artificial intelligence tools have the potential to greatly advance laryngology care by creating novel screening methods, improving how data-heavy diagnostics of laryngology are analyzed, and standardizing outcome measures. However, physician and patient trust in artificial intelligence must improve for the technology to be successfully implemented. Additionally, most existing studies lack large and diverse datasets, external validation, and consistent ground-truth references necessary to produce generalizable results. Collaborative, large-scale studies will fuel technological innovation and bring artificial intelligence to the forefront of patient care in laryngology.

Abstract:The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into medical disciplines is rapidly transforming healthcare delivery, with audiology being no exception. By synthesizing the existing literature, this review seeks to inform clinicians, researchers, and policymakers about the potential and challenges of integrating AI into audiological practice. The PubMed, Cochrane, and Google Scholar databases were searched for articles published in English from 1990 to 2024 with the following query: "(audiology) AND ("artificial intelligence" OR "machine learning" OR "deep learning")". The PRISMA extension for scoping reviews (PRISMA-ScR) was followed. The database research yielded 1359 results, and the selection process led to the inclusion of 104 manuscripts. The integration of AI in audiology has evolved significantly over the succeeding decades, with 87.5% of manuscripts published in the last 4 years. Most types of AI were consistently used for specific purposes, such as logistic regression and other statistical machine learning tools (e.g., support vector machine, multilayer perceptron, random forest, deep belief network, decision tree, k-nearest neighbor, or LASSO) for automated audiometry and clinical predictions; convolutional neural networks for radiological image analysis; and large language models for automatic generation of diagnostic reports. Despite the advances in AI technologies, different ethical and professional challenges are still present, underscoring the need for larger, more diverse data collection and bioethics studies in the field of audiology.

Abstract:A 65 year old female patient was submitted to the ICU in deep accidental hypothermia, due to lying in cold water after intoxication with Melperon. Body temperature after submission was 24 degrees C; therefore rewarming was done by an extracorporal bypass. After successful rewarming, the further posttraumatic course was free of complications and the patient could be discharged 14 days after the event.

Physician views of artificial intelligence in otolaryngology and rhinology: A mixed methods study

Abstract:Objective: The study aimed to investigate otolaryngologists' knowledge, trust, acceptance, and concerns with clinical applications of artificial intelligence (AI). Methods: This study used mixed methods with survey and semistructured interviews. Survey was e-mailed to American Rhinologic Society members, of which a volunteer sample of 86 members responded. Nineteen otolaryngologists were purposefully recruited and interviewed until thematic saturation was achieved. Results: Seventy-six respondents (10% response rate) completed the majority of the survey: 49% worked in academic settings and 43% completed residency 10 or fewer years ago. Of 19 interviewees, 58% worked in academic settings, and 47% completed residency 10 or fewer years ago. Familiarity: Only 8% of survey respondents reported having AI training in residency, although 72% had familiarity with general AI concepts; 0 interviewees had personal experience with AI in clinical settings. Expected uses: Of the surveyed otolaryngologists, 82% would use an AI-based clinical decision aid and 74% were comfortable with AI proposing treatment recommendations. However, only 44% of participants would trust AI to identify malignancy and 53% to interpret radiographic images. Interviewees trusted AI for simple tasks, such as labeling septal deviation, more than complex ones, such as identifying tumors. Factors influencing AI adoption: 89% of survey participants would use AI if it improved patient satisfaction, 78% would be willing to use AI if experts and studies validated the technologies, and 73% would only use AI if it increased efficiency. Sixty-one percent of survey respondents expected AI incorporation into clinical practice within 5 years. Interviewees emphasized that AI adoption depends on its similarity to their clinical judgment and to expert opinion. Concerns included nuanced or complex cases, poor design or accuracy, and the personal nature of physician-patient relationships. Conclusion: Few physicians have experience with AI technologies but expect rapid adoption in the clinic, highlighting the urgent need for clinical education and research. Otolaryngologists are most receptive to AI "augmenting" physician expertise and administrative capacity, with respect for physician autonomy and maintaining relationships with patients. Level of evidence: Level VI, descriptive or qualitative study.

Abstract:Artificial Intelligence (AI) has found rapidly growing applications in ophthalmology, achieving robust recognition and classification in most kind of ocular diseases. Ophthalmic surgery is one of the most delicate microsurgery, requiring high fineness and stability of surgeons. The massive demand of the AI assist ophthalmic surgery will constitute an important factor in boosting accelerate precision medicine. In clinical practice, it is instrumental to update and review the considerable evidence of the current AI technologies utilized in the investigation of ophthalmic surgery involved in both the progression and innovation of precision medicine. Bibliographic databases including PubMed and Google Scholar were searched using keywords such as "ophthalmic surgery", "surgical selection", "candidate screening", and "robot-assisted surgery" to find articles about AI technology published from 2018 to 2023. In addition to the Editorials and letters to the editor, all types of approaches are considered. In this paper, we will provide an up-to-date review of artificial intelligence in eye surgery, with a specific focus on its application to candidate screening, surgery selection, postoperative prediction, and real-time intraoperative guidance.

Abstract:This systematic literature review aims to study the role and impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in transforming Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) healthcare. It aims to compare and analyse literature that applied AI algorithms for ENT disease prediction and detection based on their effectiveness, methods, dataset, and performance. We have also discussed ENT specialists' challenges and AI's role in solving them. This review also discusses the challenges faced by AI researchers. This systematic review was completed using PRISMA guidelines. Data was extracted from several reputable digital databases, including PubMed, Medline, SpringerLink, Elsevier, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and IEEExplore. The search criteria included studies recently published between 2018 and 2024 related to the application of AI for ENT healthcare. After removing duplicate studies and quality assessments, we reviewed eligible articles and responded to the research questions. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of AI applications in ENT healthcare. Among the 3257 unique studies, 27 were selected as primary studies. About 62.5% of the included studies were effective in providing disease predictions. We found that Pretrained DL models are more in application than CNN algorithms when employed for ENT disease predictions. The accuracy of models ranged between 75 and 97%. We also observed the effectiveness of conversational AI models such as ChatGPT in the ENT discipline. The research in AI for ENT is advancing rapidly. Most of the models have achieved accuracy above 90%. However, the lack of good-quality data and data variability limits the overall ability of AI models to perform better for ENT disease prediction. Further research needs to be conducted while considering factors such as external validation and the issue of class imbalance.

Abstract:Objective: The endoscopic and laryngoscopic examination is paramount for laryngeal, oropharyngeal, nasopharyngeal, nasal, and oral cavity benign lesions and cancer evaluation. Nevertheless, upper aerodigestive tract (UADT) endoscopy is intrinsically operator-dependent and lacks objective quality standards. At present, there has been an increased interest in artificial intelligence (AI) applications in this area to support physicians during the examination, thus enhancing diagnostic performances. The relative novelty of this research field poses a challenge both for the reviewers and readers as clinicians often lack a specific technical background. Data sources: Four bibliographic databases were searched: PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane, and Google Scholar. Review methods: A structured review of the current literature (up to September 2022) was performed. Search terms related to topics of AI, machine learning (ML), and deep learning (DL) in UADT endoscopy and laryngoscopy were identified and queried by 3 independent reviewers. Citations of selected studies were also evaluated to ensure comprehensiveness. Conclusions: Forty-one studies were included in the review. AI and computer vision techniques were used to achieve 3 fundamental tasks in this field: classification, detection, and segmentation. All papers were summarized and reviewed. Implications for practice: This article comprehensively reviews the latest developments in the application of ML and DL in UADT endoscopy and laryngoscopy, as well as their future clinical implications. The technical basis of AI is also explained, providing guidance for nonexpert readers to allow critical appraisal of the evaluation metrics and the most relevant quality requirements.

Abstract:Importance: Artificial intelligence (AI) has made invaluable contributions to the technologic advancements across many fields. It is transforming health care and may have a role in improving patient outcomes in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery (FPRS). Observations: In recent years, new automated approaches to simulating and analyzing outcomes using AI have emerged. Advances in rhinoplasty, facelifts, orthognathic surgery, facial reanimation, and preoperative consultation are currently being developed in FPRS. Conclusions and Relevance: Applications of AI have been applied to assist facial plastic surgeons in the preoperative stage, intraoperative planning process, and objective assessment of postoperative outcomes. Abstract:In the field of anaesthesia, artificial intelligence (AI) has become a game-changing technology. Applications of AI include keeping records, monitoring patients, calculating and administering drugs, and carrying out mechanical procedures. This article explores the current uses, challenges, and prospective applications of AI in anaesthesia practices. This review discusses AI-supported systems like anaesthesia information management systems (AIMS), mechanical robots for carrying out procedures, and pharmacological models for drug delivery. AIMS has helped in automated record-keeping, predicting bad events, and monitoring the vital signs of the patient. Their application has a vital role in improving the efficacy of anaesthesia management and patient safety. The application of AI in anaesthesia comes with its own unique difficulties. Noteworthy obstacles include issues with data quantity and quality, technical limitations, and moral and legal dilemmas. The key to overcoming these barriers is to set guidelines for the ethical use of AI in healthcare, improve the reliability and comprehension of AI systems, and certify the health data precision and security. AI has very bright potential. Exciting future directions include developments in AI and machine learning thus development of new applications, and the possible enhancement in training and education. Potential research areas include the application of AI to chronic disease management, pain management, and the reinforcement of anaesthesiologists' education. AI could be used to design authentic lifelike training simulations and individualized student feedback systems, hence transforming anaesthesia education and training methodology. For this review, we conducted a PubMed, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Database search in 2022-2023 and retrieved articles on AI and its uses in anaesthesia. Recommendations for future research and development include strengthening the safety and reliability of health data, building a better understanding of AI systems, and looking into new areas of use. Abstract:In this study, a simple yet effective projected clustering method is proposed for hyperspectral images. The proposed method assimilates segmentation, clustering, and local band selection within its framework. Initially, a segmented map of the hyperspectral image is obtained by using <inline-formula><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$k$</tex-math> </inline-formula>–means algorithm. In the subsequent stage, the obtained segments are considered as clusters and are merged by utilizing the mutual nearest neighbour information. In the last stage, the method identifies the <inline-formula><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$k$</tex-math></inline-formula> significant clusters using a criterion based on entropy. The final cluster map is obtained by assigning all the remaining clusters to these <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$k$</tex-math></inline-formula> significant clusters. Additionally, the clustering stages make use of multiple subspaces, obtained by deploying a local band selection approach. To test the performance of the proposed method, experiments are conducted over five hyperspectral images and is further compared with other clustering frameworks. The efficacy of the proposed method is confirmed by the experiments conducted over these images.

Abstract:The use of computers and other technologies to replicate human-like intelligent behaviour and critical thinking is known as artificial intelligence (AI).The development of AI-assisted applications and big data research has accelerated as a result of the rapid advancements in computing power, sensor technology, and platform accessibility that have accompanied advances in artificial intelligence. AI models and algorithms for planning and diagnosing endodontic procedures. The search engine evaluated information on artificial intelligence (AI) and its function in the field of endodontics, and it also incorporated databases like Google Scholar, PubMed, and Science Direct with the search criterion of original research articles published in English. Online appointment scheduling, online check-in at medical facilities, digitization of medical records, reminder calls for follow-up appointments and immunisation dates for children and pregnant women, as well as drug dosage algorithms and adverse effect warnings when prescribing multidrug combinations, are just a few of the tasks that already use artificial intelligence. Data from the review supported the conclusion that AI can play a significant role in endodontics, including the identification of apical lesions, classification and numbering of teeth, detection of dental caries, periodontitis, and periapical disease, diagnosis of various dental problems, aiding dentists in making referrals, and helping them develop more precise treatment plans for dental disorders. Although artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to drastically alter how medicine is practised in ways that were previously unthinkable, many of its practical applications are still in their infancy and need additional research and development. Over the past ten years, artificial intelligence in ophthalmology has grown significantly and will continue to do so as imaging techniques and data processing algorithms improve.

Abstract:Application of artificial intelligence (AI) in the medical field during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) era is being explored further due to its beneficial aspects such as self-reported data analysis, X-ray interpretation, computed tomography (CT) image recognition, and patient management. This narrative review article included published articles from MEDLINE/PubMed, Google Scholar and National Informatics Center egov mobile apps. The database was searched for "Artificial intelligence" and "COVID-19" and "respiratory care unit" written in the English language during a period of one year 2019-2020. The relevance of AI for patients is in hands of people with digital health tools, Aarogya setu app and Smartphone technology. AI shows about 95% accuracy in detecting COVID-19-specific chest findings. Robots with AI are being used for patient assessment and drug delivery to patients to avoid the spread of infection. The pandemic outbreak has replaced the classroom method of teaching with the online execution of teaching practices and simulators. AI algorithms have been used to develop major organ tissue characterization and intelligent pain management techniques for patients. The Blue-dot AI-based algorithm helps in providing early warning signs. The AI model automatically identifies a patient in respiratory distress based on face detection, face recognition, facial action unit detection, expression recognition, posture, extremity movement analysis, visitation frequency detection sound pressure, and light level detection. There is now no looking back as AI and machine learning are to stay in the field of training, teaching, patient care, and research in the future.

Abstract:Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a topic of interest that is frequently debated in all research fields. The medical field is no exception, where several unanswered questions remain. When and how this field can benefit from AI support in daily routines are the most frequently asked questions. The present review aims to present the types of neural networks (NNs) available for development, discussing their advantages, disadvantages and how they can be applied practically. In addition, the present review summarizes how NNs (combined with various other features) have already been applied in studies in the ear nose throat research field, from assisting diagnosis to treatment management. Although the answer to this question regarding AI remains elusive, understanding the basics and types of applicable NNs can lead to future studies possibly using more than one type of NN. This approach may bypass the actual limitations in accuracy and relevance of information generated by AI. The proposed studies, the majority of which used convolutional NNs, obtained accuracies varying 70-98%, with a number of studies having the AI trained on a limited number of cases (<100 patients). The lack of standardization in AI protocols for research negatively affects data homogeneity and transparency of databases.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence is a computer system which can replicate human behavior and largely supports human actions and interpretation, but not replace human responses. Over the past few decades, the field of artificial intelligence (AI) has experienced phenomenal development and expansion. We are surrounded by several instances of AI. The most typical examples include Chat GPT, Alexa, Google Maps, autocorrect and text editors, e-payments, virtual travel booking agent, social media monitoring, gaming, including chess matches involving computers versus human chess masters, self driving cars, adaptive cruise control, parking assistance, and facial recognition for biometrics such as retinal scans and fingerprint scans. AI has applications in different branches of Dentistry. This review article attempts to highlight these points and lays an emphasis on how AI is driving dentistry in the present and will improve dental care in the future. A total of 59 papers from an electronic search using Google Scholar and PubMed were used to create this narrative review. Artificial intelligence can be utilised for diagnosis, decision-making, treatment planning, early detection and prevention of oral disease, and finally result prediction by utilising cutting-edge technology in imaging. The future of AI in dentistry appears to be outstanding with advancements in full artificial intelligence technology, dental assistance, and dental instructional tools. In order to help dental professionals better grasp AI as a tool to assist their work with enhanced efficiency, investigations need to be done to uncover patterns and foresee future related to oral health concerns.
Artificial intelligence innovations in neurosurgical oncology: a narrative review

Abstract:Purpose: Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become increasingly integrated clinically within neurosurgical oncology. This report reviews the cutting-edge technologies impacting tumor treatment and outcomes. Methods: A rigorous literature search was performed with the aid of a research librarian to identify key articles referencing AI and related topics (machine learning (ML), computer vision (CV), augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), etc.) for neurosurgical care of brain or spinal tumors. Results: Treatment of central nervous system (CNS) tumors is being improved through advances across AI-such as AL, CV, and AR/VR. AI aided diagnostic and prognostication tools can influence pre-operative patient experience, while automated tumor segmentation and total resection predictions aid surgical planning. Novel intra-operative tools can rapidly provide histopathologic tumor classification to streamline treatment strategies. Post-operative video analysis, paired with rich surgical simulations, can enhance training feedback and regimens. Conclusion: While limited generalizability, bias, and patient data security are current concerns, the advent of federated learning, along with growing data consortiums, provides an avenue for increasingly safe, powerful, and effective AI platforms in the future.

Abstract:Since the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) in 1956 by John McCarthy, the field has propelled medicine, optimized efficiency, and led to technological breakthroughs in clinical care. As an important frontier in healthcare, AI has implications on every subspecialty within medicine. This review highlights the applications of AI in ophthalmology: a specialty that lends itself well to the integration of computer algorithms due to the high volume of digital imaging, data, and objective metrics such as central retinal thickness. The focus of this review is the use of AI in retina, cornea, anterior segment, and pediatrics.
