Abstract:Geometric meshes consist of a set of points in 3D space connected in a (typically manifold) graph structure. As such a vector of 3n real values may represent them, where n is the number of vertices in the mesh. Unfortunately, although straightforward, this is not a very useful representation of the mesh, as it is difficult to naturally manipulate the mesh data using this representation. A better representation would capture the spatial correlation between vertices, be invariant to a class of natural transformations, not be too redundant, and be efficiently invertible. Recent years have seen the development of a variety of mesh representation schemes, intended primarily for mesh editing applications. The author surveys some of these representation schemes, discuss the pros and cons, and demonstrate how the may be used to edit, animate and morph mesh datasets.
Heavy Metal Concentration in Neotropical Aquatic Snakes (Helicops pastazae) and Its Potential as a Bioindicator of Water Pollution

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to test the potential role of the aquatic snake Helicops pastazae as an indicator of water pollution caused by heavy metals. In particular, we tested whether the total heavy metal concentration is related to (1) the position (upstream vs downstream) of the sampling point and its distance from the point where wastewater is discharged; (2) the taxonomic group studied: piscivorous snakes vs characid fish that occupy the same habitats; and (3) the organ or tissue examined: snake liver versus muscle. We used atomic absorption spectrophotometry with electrothermal atomization to quantify cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr) and lead (Pb) and found significant differences between some of the sampling points, with particularly high metal concentrations detected upstream at point 1. However, we found no clear spatial pattern nor any significant differences in the concentration of any of the metals in fish and snake muscle, suggesting that both species accumulate similar amounts of the sampled elements. With regard to interactions, snake liver had the highest concentrations of Cd, while muscle had the highest concentrations of Pb and Cr, which may indicate tissue affinity differences for certain metals. Altogether, our results indicate that H. pastazae accumulates contaminants differentially, depending on the tissue and location, which highlights their potential as bioindicators of water contamination. Further research is necessary to understand their role as bioindicators based on extensive sampling and environmental contaminant data.
Water pollution evaluation in Aswan, Egypt, utilizing biochemical and molecular indicators in aquatic Chironomidae larvae in natural and laboratory settings

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution has a harmful impact on the health of all living beings. The goal of this study was to compare the impacts of zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), iron (Fe), and manganese (Mn) on two Egyptian streams in Aswan Governorate. In addition, aquatic Chironomidae larvae were exposed to a variety of heavy metal concentrations for two days. The mortality rate was determined, and the median lethal concentrations (LC50) were estimated. The most harmful metal for Chironomidae larvae was Pb, followed by Zn, Fe, and Mn. Metal bioconcentration in Chironomidae larvae increases with increasing concentrations of metals. The enzymatic response to heavy metals uptake in Chironomidae larvae; namely, lipid peroxidation, superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione-S-transferase, and glutathione peroxidase were determined. Although the Pb-treated group recorded the highest lipid peroxidation, it showed the lowest glutathione peroxidase activity. The glutathione-S-transferase enzyme was less active in the Zn-treated group, as was the superoxide dismutase enzyme, and the catalase enzyme was the least active in the Zn-treated group. Changes in randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) profiles were detected following heavy metal treatments at various doses when compared to controls. This study gives insight into how cruise ship activities and industrial pollution in rivers endanger aquatic life and hence, human life.
Arsenic and metal levels in snake tissues from Lagoa Santa Karst, Brazil

Abstract:Concentrations of one metalloid (As) and eight metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) were determined in tissues (muscle, liver, and kidney) of eight snake species (Bothrops neuwiedi, Crotalus durissus, Dipsas mikanii, Epicrates crassus, Helicops modestus, Micrurus carvalhoi, Oxyrhopus guibei, and Oxyrhopus trigeminus) from Lagoa Santa Karst. Except for Cu and Zn, all other analyzed elements were detected in concentrations within the ranges previously reported for snakes inhabiting polluted areas, emphasizing Hg (specific Hg mean concentrations varied from 0.87 to 9.76 μg g-1 d.w). The highest mean concentrations of all elements except Zn were found in muscle samples of the false corals O. guibei (means ranged from 2.01 [Pb] to 9.76 [Hg]). The highest Zn mean concentration (13.77 μg g-1 d.w) was detected in the kidney of the water snake H. modestus. No significant correlation was found between element concentrations and body size for all species. Significant interorgan differences were observed for As, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Pb, and Zn concentrations in the three tissues in H. modestus. Significant interspecific differences were found in at least one organ for all elements. Significant pairwise differences were found between diet specialist species and between these species and broader diet species, while no significant difference was found between the broader diet species. The bioaccumulation of As and metals in snakes from Lagoa Santa Karst could be associated with natural rock dissolution and erosion processes but also with the wide-scale mining in the region and the increased agriculture and urbanization.

Abstract:Abstract Twenty-nine sediment samples were collected from the Hurghada Bay, a heavily polluted bay on the Red Sea of Egypt, to inspect the environmental quality status and anthropogenic consequences on benthic foraminifera. Some foraminiferal species showed deformations in their apertures and coiling directions as a response to environmental stresses. In addition, the FoRAM index, an index used for evaluating the growth of coral reefs, indicated a hazard in the proximity of nearshore stations. To elucidate the relationships between the biological response and chemistry of sediments, eight heavy metals concentrations (Cu, Cd, Zn, Pb, As, Cr, Ni, and Mn) were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma–atomic emission spectrometers (ICP-AES). Interestingly, two groups of benthic foraminiferal associations were illustrated using multivariate statistical analyses. Group I have extremely high heavy metal concentrations, an enriched total organic matter (TOM)%, high deformation percentages, and mud content. Moreover, it is dominated by Ammonia tepida which is regarded as an opportunistic species. Group II includes low to moderately polluted stations, highly enriched living foraminiferal assemblages, and is dominated by the sensitive rotaliids Neorotalia calcar and Amphistegina lobifera . Alternatively, four geochemical indices, EF, CF, I geo , and PLI, are used to assess the contamination level that shown ominous spots for the nearshore stations of the Hurghada Bay. The pollution indices (HQ and HI) were also conducted to evaluate the risks of carcinogenic heavy metals on human health. Our findings demonstrated that ingestion and dermal exposure have greater carcinogenic hazards for adults and children than inhalation. The lifetime carcinogenic risk (LCR) is significantly higher than the permissible limit and follows this order: Pb > As > Cr > Cd > Ni. To that end, developing strategies to lessen the negative impact of pollution on human health and/or the Red Sea’s biodiversity is an inevitable issue in the present day and future.

Abstract:This is a first attempt to assess the levels of trace elements, PAHs, and TPHs in six elasmobranch species (Carcharhinus dussumieri, C. sorrah, Chiloscyllium arabicum, Gymnura poecilura, Sphyrna lewini, S. mokarran) from the Arabian Gulf. The chemical analysis showed that the concentrations of contaminants differed significantly between liver and muscle samples with both pelagic and benthic species and all families. For all species, contaminant concentrations were significantly higher in the liver than in the muscle. While muscle contaminant concentrations differed significantly with respect to species' lifestyles and families, those of liver showed no significant differences between pelagic and benthic species, neither between the four families nor between the six species. None of the analysed contaminants exceeded the internationally recognized standards in all studied species. These results enrich the knowledge on the bioaccumulation of contaminants in elasmobranchs and allow to assess the environmental status of the Arabian Gulf.

Abstract:Abstract Trace element bioaccumulation in marine organisms is a rising international issue due to possible health concerns for humans. Thirteen trace elements were analyzed in the sediment, water, and muscular tissue of Red Sea fish. Additionally, the average daily intake (EDI), the cancer risk (CR), the hazard index (HI), and the target hazard quotient (THQ) of those elements have been taken into consideration when evaluating any possible health concerns related to their consumption. All species presented quantifiable values in muscle for all the analyzed elements (arsenic (As), lead (Pb), copper (Cu), aluminum (Al), boron (B), iron (Fe), barium (Ba), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), zinc (Zn), and mercury (Hg), except for Cd and Hg, being Fe and Zn the most accumulated elements in all species. Conversely, in water samples, most elements were undeleted except for aluminum, boron, iron, and zinc. All Red Sea fish, however, had concentrations of Zn, Ni, Fe, Cu, and Mn below the upper limit allowed, although most species had higher levels of As, Cr, and Pb (0.48 ± 0.83–5.10 ± 0.79, 1.97 ± 0.46–5.25 ± 0.67 and 2.12 ± 1.01–6.83 ± 0.93 μg/g, respectively). The studied Red Sea fish showed contamination degrees (CD) of Mn, Cu, Fe, Ni, Zn, and Pb were ≤ 1, indicating minimal contamination, with As and Cr showing higher contamination degrees. However, the pollution index values (MPI-elements) can be represented according to ascending order: Lethrinus ramak < Cephalopholis hemistiktos < Pagellus affinis < Trachurus japonicus < Cheilinus lunulatus < Siganus luridus < Parupeneus forsskali < Caesio suevica . The study found that edible tissues are safe for human consumption, with HI values for children and adults less than ten, indicating negligible non-cancer hazards. However, fish consumption presents health risks due to chromium, lead, and arsenic, with THQ values several times greater than 1, and CR-Ni, CR-Cr, and CR-As values exceeding the acceptable 10 −4 value in all studied species. This study provides critical insights into trace element contamination in marine fish species, highlighting the need for ongoing monitoring and proactive measures to ensure safe marine fish consumption in the Aqaba Gulf.

A Brief Review on Heavy Metal Bioaccumulation Studies from Red Sea

Abstract:The Red Sea forms an important marine ecosystem with its rich species diversity and the different ecosystems, including the coral reefs. The region has received relatively less heavy metal pollution owing to comparatively lesser industrial pollution. This study attempts to review the records of heavy metal bioaccumulation reported in the last two decades. This review is an endeavour to audit the heavy metal bioaccumulation, revealed over the past twenty years, such as As, Cr, Cu, Fe, Cd, Hg, Mn, Zn Ni, Co, Se, and Pb, as reported from various regions of the Red Sea in organisms such as plankton, molluscs, crustaceans, and fish. Though the results of various studies reviewed here are not comparable to each other due to differences in organisms, types of tissues studied, and different methods of analysis as well as nature of their inhabiting sites, this review will be a baseline data of the heavy metal bioaccumulation, which can help in future evaluation in the context of the rapid developmental activity prevalent in the coasts of the Red Sea. The findings compiled emphasize the need for a comprehensive biomonitoring program that can conserve the unique biodiversity of the Red Sea.

Abstract:In this paper we present a framework for enhancing trust in Internet commerce. Experience shows that efficient cryptographic protocols are not enough to guarantee peoples’ confidence in Internet commerce; the transacting parties must also trust each other. Hence, the main ingredient missing in today’s e‐commerce infrastructures is modeling and implementing trust. Several attempts have been made to provide secure and trusted protocols but few have seen any practical use. This paper shows how trust can be provided through a network of Trust Service Providers (TSp). We have identified a set of services that should be offered by a TSp. We also present a distributed object‐oriented implementation of trust services using CORBA, JAVA and XML.

Abstract:This study aims to evaluate the liver, gill, and muscle tissue heavy metal accumulation of the thin lip mullet ( Chelon ramada ) from Ain Ziana Lagoon, Benghazi. The heavy metals included zinc, copper, lead, and manganese. Between September 2021 and August 2022, specimens were collected on a monthly basis. They were identified using DNA barcoding, namely the CO1 gene, which is associated with the sequence that is BankIt in the NCBI gene bank (accession number OR533708). The research tracked the lagoon's physicochemical characteristics, finding that heavy metal concentrations spiked in the summer and that water temperature, pH, and salinity varied throughout the year. Except for copper in the winter, lead, manganese, and copper levels were all above acceptable limits, according to a comparison with EPA (2005) regulations. On the other hand, zinc levels were under these limitations. The amounts of all metals in the sediment regularly exceeded the limits set by the EPA. Zinc and manganese levels in fish tissues were within the approved ranges according to WHO and FAO standards but lead and manganese levels were far higher than allowed, indicating possible pollution from sewage or industrial sources. There were noticeable seasonal patterns in bioaccumulation, especially during the warmer months, but manganese did not exhibit a distinct pattern. Also noted that the thin lip mullet's mineral absorption and release capacities varied with the different seasons and tissues. Lastly, the Metal Pollution Index (MPI) showed that there was a larger possibility for bioaccumulation in the liver, gill, and muscle during the study period.

Heavy metals in sediments, mussels and oysters from Trinidad and Venezuela

Abstract:The Gulf of Paria is bordered by both Trinidad and Venezuela, from which various metallic pollutants and other contaminants can originate. The Gulf is still a significant source of fish, crabs and shellfish for human consumption to both countries, where concerns over the quality of this marine environment have been long expressed but never properly addressed. In addition, the circulatory current patterns in the Gulf ensure that contaminants originating from either country are likely to affect both countries eventually. Heavy metals were determined in oysters (Crassostrea rhizophorae and C. virginica), green mussels (Perna viridis) and sediments from the Gulf of Paria. Samples were obtained at four sites in Trinidad and three sites in Venezuela in the Gulf of Paria, in addition to comparative samples collected from three sites on the north coast of Venezuela. Edible tissues of twelve shellfish from each location were blended and aliquots digested with concentrated nitric acid, for extraction of cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, nickel and zinc. The solutions were analysed by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. Mercury was extracted with a mixture of nitric, hydrochloric and sulphuric acids and determined by cold vapour atomic absorption. Sediments were oven-dried at 60'C, before being similarly extracted. Results showed that mercury in sediments at all sites in Trinidad and Venezuela exceeded NOAA and Canadian sediment quality guidelines, while cadmium, copper, nickel, lead and zinc also exceeded these guidelines at several sites. Heavy metal levels in oysters and green mussels varied widely with location. However, oysters from the Gulf of Paria contained significantly higher mean levels of cadmium, copper, nickel and zinc than those from the north coast of Venezuela, but this difference was not apparent in mussels. Cadmium, mercury and zinc in sediments were significantly correlated with those of mussels, but not of oysters, in which copper and zinc at several sites in the Gulf of Paria exceeded local maximum permissible levels (Cu = 20 microg g(-1) wet wt; Zn = 50 microg g(-1) wet wt) for human consumption. These findings indicate that while mussels may be better biological indicators of heavy metal pollution in sediments than oysters, the latter may provide copper and zinc contamination. Further research is needed to determine the most appropriate biological indicators of heavy metal and other pollutants in the local marine environment and to develop protocols for their use.
Factors influencing heavy metal concentrations in the bottom sediments of the Al-Kharrar Lagoon and Salman Bay, eastern Red Sea coast, Saudi Arabia

Abstract:The Al-Kharrar Lagoon (KL) and Salman Bay (SB) are located on the eastern Red Sea coast, Saudi Arabia. The concentrations of heavy metals such as Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Ni, Pb, Co, and Cd in their bottom sediments were measured and correlated with the surface water temperature, salinity, pH and dissolved oxygen (DO), organic carbon (OC), carbonates, and sediment grain size. The highest concentration of metals in the KL is mostly attributed to influx of siliciclastics from wadies to the center and south-eastern parts of the lagoon where metals were directly correlated with salinity, pH, and mud. At the inlet stations, the metals were the lowest indicating that the KL acts as a buffer zone, preventing metals from dispersion into the Red Sea waters. But also, the enrichment factor (EF), there, for Mn, Zn, Cu, Co, and Ni, was the highest due likely to the effectiveness of biosorption by mucus algae that proliferate on coral debris and sand grains. The metals had no relationships with the OC, but with mud and Fe-Mn oxides due possibly to the presence of high DO. The brine waters of SB showed inverse relationships with the metals that ascribed probably to the occurrence of many soluble salts preventing precipitation of heavy metals into the sediments. Normalizing the heavy metals with Fe and the world average shale indicated that the bottom sediments of the KL and SB were uncontaminated and mainly influenced by natural sources.

Impacts of human activities and natural inputs on heavy metal contents of many coral reef environments along the Egyptian Red Sea coast

Abstract:In order to monitor the heavy metals effect coming from both human activities and natural inputs on coral reef environments of the Egyptian Red Sea coast, metal concentrations in thirty- eight coral reef species and nearby sediment samples collected from seven studied sites were analyzed. Four sites represent impacted areas; included from south to north Hamrawein, Safaga and Hurghada Harbours and Ras El-Behar Area. Wadi El-Gemal represents natural input area while Qola'an and Kalawye Reefs are the control areas. Heavy metal contents were measured in both coral skeletons and nearby marine sediments. Both impact areas as well as natural inputs area recorded the highest values of metals compared with the control ones. However, heavy metal contents recorded high values in sediments of Hamrawein Harbour, while coral species recorded high values in Wadi El-Gemal area. Generally, metal variations in coral reef species reflect natural conditions and human activity. On the other hand, there are no clear relationships between concentrations of heavy metals in coral reef species and those in sediments.

Abstract:Bardawil Lake is a unique aquatic ecosystem that provides a habitat for various fish and other marine organisms. This study aimed to analyze the quality of fish species to prove that this lake is free of pollution, not other Egyptian lakes, due to the accumulation of some heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn) in various tissues of fish species that were caught from this lake. Thirty-five fish samples were caught during the Spring of 2018 from seven different species: Mugil cephalus, Liza auratus, Sparus aurata, Dicentrarchus labrax, Siganus rivulatus, Anguilla angilla, and Solae solea . The Association of Official Analytical Chemists methods using a spectrophotometer determined the biochemical composition. In contrast, atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) was employed to determine the heavy metals expressed by μg/g wet weight. Results exposed that the accumulation of essential micronutrient (Cu, Zn) content was higher than toxic elements (Cd & Pb) in muscles in order to Zn > Cu > Pb > Cd. Muscles < gills < liver in order of all metals except Pb with order muscles < liver < gills. The metals studied in the muscles were lower than those set by the WHO and the EU standards. The carcinogenic risk with lower allowable limits of 1 × 10 –6 to 1 × 10 –4 in both normal and high consumption groups; target and total target hazard quotients (THQ & HI) in muscles were < 1. The biochemical composition level was highest in the liver, except for protein, which was highest in muscle for all fish species. There is no evidence of harmful contaminants in the muscular tissue of the fish sampled from Bardawil Lake, although fishing activity. However, customers should know that health concerns may be associated with overeating fish.

Abstract:Metal concentrations (Cu, Cr, Ni, Zn, Fe, Mn, Cd, and Pb) in marine indicator species were assessed for the study of metal pollution in the Eastern Ionian Sea during the cold period of the year (December 2018 to February 2019). Limpets and sea urchins were collected from natural populations at seven coastal stations while mussels were transplanted at three near-shore stations in the study area. Mixed mesozooplankton samples were selected from a twelve-station offshore network. Additionally, fish, shrimp, and shortfin squid samples were collected by trawling. For the first time, metal concentrations in marine animals were measured in an extended variety of organisms in the area. Higher metal concentrations in limpets, sea urchins, and mussels were observed in the wider area of the two ports located at the sampling area's eastern and southern geographical borders. Levels in zooplankton also followed the same spatial variation. In general, metal concentrations in the investigated organisms were within the same range as those in other non-impacted Mediterranean areas. Accordingly, metal levels in the flesh of the fish, shrimps, and the mantle of shortfin squids did not reveal any risk for human consumption. Metal levels from the present study are proposed as a reference state for the area, while future deviations should be evaluated taking into account potential changes in the natural and anthropogenic pressures on the specific coastal marine ecosystem.

Abstract:This research investigated the levels of 16 trace and heavy elements in seawater for the first time in the northern Gulf of Aqaba. The concentrations of four selected sites along the Jordanian coast. The elements were determined by using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectroscopy (ICP-MS). Observed concentrations of Co, Cu, Ni, and Zn in seawater were higher than the threshold levels that were recommended by the Australian Water Quality Guidelines. The levels of As and Se in seawater were also higher than previously reported values from Arab seas. Moreover, it could be concluded that the Gulf of Aqaba (Jordanian coast) is highly contaminated by Ni, due to seawater concentrations exceeding both Australian and US EPA guidelines. Based on the results of this study, additional investigations are necessary to determine the anthropogenic activities that may cause this pollution. The determination of elemental concentrations in biota and sediment is also highly recommended for the Jordanian coast. This study and future studies will be useful for assessment and monitoring of marine pollution in the Gulf of Aqaba.

Abstract:Contamination of mangrove ecosystems, including those of the Red Sea area, has caused serious concern globally. Spatial distribution of heavy metals and their bioaccumulation in one of the common mangrove plants of Saudi Arabia, Avicennia marina L., was evaluated at 8 stations at the Rabigh lagoon to assess the ecological risks due to heavy metal contamination. Among all the heavy metals, Fe concentration was recorded highest (8939.38±312.63 mg/kg) at station S4. Contamination factor (CF) values for all heavy metals determined in this study were recorded in ascending order as CuS4>S3>S5>S7>S1>S8>S2. Bio-concentration factor (BCF) was < 1 for all the heavy metals and there was a positive correlation between the antioxidants and lead (Pb), which can be a result of the ability of A. marina to exclude or detoxify this metal by its mechanism of exclusion or detoxification. A significant correlation existed between the heavy metals concentration in sediment and A. marina leaves at one combination or the other, except for Cu and Cd, which do not correlate with any other metal concentration. The information provided in the present study can be used in the monitoring and measurement of heavy metal pollution in estuaries or other aquatic environments, to prevent several ecological risks to the mangrove ecosystem.

Abstract:Fish contamination with heavy metal (loid)s could be a serious threat to human health. In this study, the concentrations of twelve heavy metal (loid)s in the liver, kidney, gills, muscles, skin and bones were determined in five different fishes , collected from the Hainan Island, China. Results indicated that the average concentrations of Fe, Cu, Zn, Cr, Mn, Se, Ni, As, Hg, Cd, Pb and Co in the fish tissues were 75.56, 6.935, 4.76, 4.05, 3.298, 0.981, 0.732, 0.643, 0.585, 0.263, 0.232, and 0.08 mg/kg respectively. Therefore, the hierarchical order of the metal concentrations in fishes observed was Fe > Cu > Zn > Cr > Mn > Se > Ni > As > Hg > Cd > Pb > Co. Findings of our study revealed that the average maximum concentrations of biologically essential heavy metals were found higher than those of biologically non-essential heavy metals. An average maximum Fe content was present in the kidneys of all fish, followed by liver, then gills. However, skin, muscles and bones which are not metabolically active sites for bioaccumulation contained low concentration. Significant positive and negative correlations were observed among the metal pairs. The THQ values for Cr, Cd, and As above 1 indicated a non-carcinogenic risk to human health. Integration of 12 heavy metal concentrations followed the order: metals in benthic fish > metals in demersal fish > metals in pelagic fish. Regular monitoring of the water and fish for heavy metals (loid)s should be done regularly to protect aquatic ecosystem and human health through targeted response measures.

Abstract:Globally, the environmental contamination of stream sediments due to geogenic and anthropogenic sources is of growing concern. In this study, the heavy metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in 22 superficial sediments in Wadi Asal, Red Sea, Egypt, were explored to assess sediment sources, the mobility of chemical species, and the degree of contamination in sediments. Therefore, the total heavy metal values in the fine fraction ( Pb (85.2%) > Co (84.4%) > Cu (80.8%) > Zn (75.9%) > Ni (48.4%) > Cr (39.6%); indicating the high mobility of Cd, Zn, Pb, Cu, and Co. The mean metal contamination factor (CF) order is Cd (10.96) > Ni (3.91) > Cr (2.77) > Zn (2.18) > Pb (2.10) > Co (1.12) > Cu (0.70). The Geo-accumulation Index (I geo ) is decreased in the following order: Cd (2.19) > Ni (0.78) > Cr (0.55) > Zn (0.44) > Pb (0.42) > Co (0.22) > Cu (0.14). The risk assessment code (RAC) revealed very high to high risk for Cd, Co, and Pb. The results pointed out that the metals Cr, Co, Cu, and Ni are from geogenic sources, while Zn, Cd, and Pb are from anthropogenic sources due to Pb–Zn mining activities. Based on the threshold effect level (TEL), Cd, Cr, Ni, and Pb have adverse effects on living organisms. According to these findings, the area along Wadi Asal and the downstream regions on the beach are highly polluted and heavy metal monitoring in sediments and aquatic organisms is recommended.

Abstract:This study aimed to assess the influence of pollution on the quality of sediments and the risks associated with El-Qusier and Safaga Cities, Red Sea, Egypt, during 2021, divided into four sectors, using multiple pollution indices. To achieve that, we evaluated the metal pollution index (MPI), contamination factor (Cf), pollution load index (PLI), contamination security index (CSI), and anthropogenicity (Anp%). Moreover, carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks are used for human health hazards. Results indicated that Mn and Fe recorded the highest concentrations, whereas Cd had the lowest. El-Quseir City sediments were found the following metal ions: Fe > Mn > Ni > Zn > Cu > Co > Pb > Cd, where the order in the Safaga City was: Fe > Mn > Zn > Ni > Cu > Pb > Co > Cd. MPI > 1, this is alarming in the study area due to heavy metal pollution. In addition, C f < 1 in all metals except Cd with contamination degree CD ranged from low to considerable contamination in El-Qusier city. In contrast, contamination ranged from significant to very high in Safaga city. PLI < 1 is lower than the reference at all monitored stations. CSI values ranged from relatively low to moderate. Besides Cd, data reflect each element's low environmental danger (Eri Me 40). This study's risk index (RI) is low to moderate in Sector 1 and high to extremely high in Sector 2. HQ and HI index < 1 means it is safe for human health in order: HI ingestion > HI dermal . CSR for different pathways was recorded as dermal > ingestion, in which total CSR for all paths is considered harmful, and the cancer risk is troublesome and higher than the reference ranges of 1 × 10 –6 –1 × 10 –4 . In conclusion, the examined heavy metals provide environmental hazards across the assessed locations.
