Abstract:One key challenge in information privacy research is measuring personal privacy. In the information privacy literature, concern for privacy is often used as a proxy measure for privacy itself. Studies have shown that individuals’ stated privacy concerns do not necessarily match up to their actual behaviors. In this study, we develop a new experimental economics approach for valuing and measuring privacy in monetary terms. A composite function consisting of individuals’ identity, demographic and private information is developed for our valuation model. We propose a methodology, based on the generalized second,price (GSP) auction mechanis m, to elicit consumers’ valuation of their personal information. We have conducted an experiment using the GSP auction to acquire personal data, which are used to estimate the valuation model. The results of our study offer interesting insights, which help explain some theoretical observations found in prior studies and, more importantly, provide interesting ideas for privacy research design.
A multimodality intervention to improve musculoskeletal health, function, metabolism, and well-being in spinal cord injury: study protocol for the FIT-SCI randomized controlled trial

Abstract:Background: A spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating, life-changing event that has profoundly deleterious effects on an individual's health and well-being. Dysregulation of neuromuscular, cardiometabolic, and endocrine organ systems following an SCI contribute to excess morbidity, mortality and a poor quality of life. As no effective treatments currently exist for SCI, the development of novel strategies to improve the functional and health status of individuals living with SCI are much needed. To address this knowledge gap, the current study will determine whether a Home-Based Multimodality Functional Recovery and Metabolic Health Enhancement Program that consists of functional electrical stimulation of the lower extremity during leg cycling (FES-LC) plus arm ergometry (AE) administered using behavioral motivational strategies, and testosterone therapy, is more efficacious than FES-LC plus AE and placebo in improving aerobic capacity, musculoskeletal health, function, metabolism, and wellbeing in SCI. Methods: This single-site, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel group trial will enroll 88 community-dwelling men and women, 19 to 70 years of age, with cervical and thoracic level of SCI, ASIA Impairment Scale grade: A, B, C, or D, 6 months or later after an SCI. Participants randomized to the multimodality intervention will undergo 16 weeks of home-based FES-LC and AE training plus testosterone undecanoate. Testosterone undecanoate injections will be administered by study staff in clinic or by a visiting nurse in the participant's home. The control group will receive 16 weeks of home-based FES-LC and AE exercise plus placebo injections. The primary outcome of this trial is peak aerobic capacity, measured during an incremental exercise testing protocol. Secondary outcomes include whole body and regional lean and adipose tissue mass; muscle strength and power; insulin sensitivity, lipids, and inflammatory markers; SCI functional index and wellbeing (mood, anxiety, pain, life satisfaction and depressive symptoms); and safety. Discussion: We anticipate that a multimodality intervention that simultaneously addresses multiple physiological impairments in SCI will result in increased aerobic capacity and greater improvements in other musculoskeletal, metabolic, functional and patient-reported outcomes compared to the control intervention. The findings of this study will have important implications for improving the care of people living with an SCI. Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov : ( NCT03576001 ). A growing body of evidence supports the potential for brain-computer interface systems to reduce spinal cord injury neuropathic pain via electroencephalographic neurofeedback. However, further studies are needed to provide more definitive evidence regarding the effectiveness of this intervention. Objective The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a multiday course of a brain-computer interface neuromodulative intervention in a gaming environment to provide pain relief for individuals with neuropathic pain following spinal cord injury. Methods We have developed a novel brain-computer interface-based neuromodulative intervention for spinal cord injury neuropathic pain. Our brain-computer interface neuromodulative treatment includes an interactive gaming interface, and a neuromodulation protocol targeted to suppress theta (4-8 Hz) and high beta (20-30 Hz) frequency powers, and enhance alpha (9-12 Hz) power. We will use a single-case experimental design with multiple baselines to examine the effectiveness of our self-developed brain-computer interface neuromodulative intervention for the treatment of spinal cord injury neuropathic pain. We will recruit 3 participants with spinal cord injury neuropathic pain. Each participant will be randomly allocated to a different baseline phase (ie, 7, 10, or 14 days), which will then be followed by 20 sessions of a 30-minute brain-computer interface neuromodulative intervention over a 4-week period. The visual analog scale assessing average pain intensity will serve as the primary outcome measure. We will also assess pain interference as a secondary outcome domain. Generalization measures will assess quality of life, sleep quality, and anxiety and depressive symptoms, as well as resting-state electroencephalography and thalamic γ-aminobutyric acid concentration. Results This study was approved by the Human Research Committees of the University of New South Wales in July 2019 and the University of Technology Sydney in January 2020. We plan to begin the trial in October 2020 and expect to publish the results by the end of 2021. Abstract:Background: Persons with spinal cord injury (SCI) are at heightened risks of developing unfavorable cardiometabolic consequences due to physical inactivity. Functional electrical stimulation (FES) and surface neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES)-resistance training (RT) have emerged as effective rehabilitation methods that can exercise muscles below the level of injury and attenuate cardio-metabolic risk factors. Our aims are to determine the impact of 12 weeks of NMES + 12 weeks of FES-lower extremity cycling (LEC) compared to 12 weeks of passive movement + 12 weeks of FES-LEC on: (1) oxygen uptake (VO2), insulin sensitivity, and glucose disposal in adults with SCI; (2) skeletal muscle size, intramuscular fat (IMF), and visceral adipose tissue (VAT); and (3) protein expression of energy metabolism, protein molecules involved in insulin signaling, muscle hypertrophy, and oxygen uptake and electron transport chain (ETC) activities. Methods/design: Forty-eight persons aged 18-65 years with chronic (> 1 year) SCI/D (AIS A-C) at the C5-L2 levels, equally sub-grouped by cervical or sub-cervical injury levels and time since injury, will be randomized into either the NMES + FES group or Passive + FES (control group). The NMES + FES group will undergo 12 weeks of evoked RT using twice-weekly NMES and ankle weights followed by twice-weekly progressive FES-LEC for an additional 12 weeks. The control group will undergo 12 weeks of passive movement followed by 12 weeks of progressive FES-LEC. Measurements will be performed at baseline (B; week 0), post-intervention 1 (P1; week 13), and post-intervention 2 (P2; week 25), and will include: VO2 measurements, insulin sensitivity, and glucose effectiveness using intravenous glucose tolerance test; magnetic resonance imaging to measure muscle, IMF, and VAT areas; muscle biopsy to measure protein expression and intracellular signaling; and mitochondrial ETC function. Discussion: Training through NMES + RT may evoke muscle hypertrophy and positively impact oxygen uptake, insulin sensitivity, and glucose effectiveness. This may result in beneficial outcomes on metabolic activity, body composition profile, mitochondrial ETC, and intracellular signaling related to insulin action and muscle hypertrophy. In the future, NMES-RT may be added to FES-LEC to improve the workloads achieved in the rehabilitation of persons with SCI and further decrease muscle wasting and cardio-metabolic risks. Effect of Graded Motor Imagery on Quality of Life, Pain, Kinesiophobia and Pain Catastrophization in Painful Diabetic Neuropathy: Study Protocol for 3-Arm Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract:Background: Painful Diabetic Neuropathy (PDN) occurs as a complication in 88% of all patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy. The intensity of pain has a direct impact on the function, levels of anxiety, kinesiophobia, fear of pain and fear of hypoglycemia, leading to reduction in the levels of physical activity. Objective: The objective of this study will be to study the effects of Graded Motor Imagery (GMI), Graded exposure and Conventional Therapy on Quality of Life (QoL), pain, kinesiophobia, pain catastrophization and anxiety in participants with PDN. Methods: This RCT will have three parallel groups with 30 participants in each group, calculated assuming partial eta squared value of 0.14, effect size of 0.403 at 85% power of the study and α error of 0.05 using G-power software. Setting: The study will be conducted at OPD & IPD of a Tertiary Care Hospital in Goa-India. Participants: Participants with Type 1 or Type II diabetes in the age group of 18-75 years having a score of 3 or more on DN-4 will be included in the study. Intervention: Group A will receive GMI, Group B will be given graded exposure & group C will be undergoing conventional physical therapy treatment. The intervention will last for 8 weeks and follow-up will be done after one month. Primary Outcome Measure: assessment using RAND SF-36, Visual Analogue Scale, Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia and Pain catastrophization will be done at 3 time points. Conclusion: This high quality RCT will provide important information about the efficacy of GMI on QoL, pain levels, pain catastrophization, kinesiophobia and anxiety. It will provide evidence for the use of cognitive intervention for pain and its associated factors, consistent with the biopsychosocial model of pain.
Exploring whether home-based neuromodulation can boost the analgesic effects of exercise in people with knee osteoarthritis: protocol for a double-blinded, pilot randomised controlled trial

Abstract:Introduction Knee osteoarthritis (OA) represents a leading cause of disability globally. Exercise has been demonstrated to improve pain and function in people with knee OA. However, when in pain, commencement of exercise is difficult, and clinical effects with such interventions are often modest. Recently, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a form of non-invasive brain stimulation, has been shown to bolster the pain-relieving effect of exercise in experimental settings. While promising, the utility of employing this approach beyond the research environment is yet to be elucidated. Therefore, this pilot study aims to investigate the feasibility, safety, adherence, tolerability and preliminary efficacy of tDCS and exercise in home-based settings to improve pain and function in people with knee OA. Methods and analysis This protocol is for a pilot randomised, double-blinded, sham-controlled trial. 24 individuals with idiopathic knee OA will be randomised to receive either active tDCS+exercise (Intervention) or sham tDCS+exercise (Control) at home. Participants will receive 20 min of tDCS 5 days per week for the first 2 weeks of this 8-week trial. Participants in both groups will complete a lower limb strengthening programme 3 days per week for the entire 8 weeks. Outcome measures of feasibility (acceptability, satisfaction, retention), safety, adherence and tolerability will be assessed throughout the trial period, with clinical outcomes of pain and function assessed before and following the intervention. Feasibility, safety, adherence and tolerability outcomes will be explored descriptively using frequencies and percentages. To examine preliminary efficacy, within-group and between-group changes in pain and functional measures will be analysed. Ethics and dissemination This protocol obtained ethical approval from the Queensland University of Technology Human Research Ethics Committee (HREA 2024-8302-20200). All participants will provide written informed consent. The findings of the study will be disseminated via journal publications and international conference proceedings. Abstract:Abstract: Antiarrhythmic agents which belong to class Ia (quinidine) and Ic (flecainide) reportedly increase propensity to ventricular tachyarrhythmia, whereas class Ib agents (lidocaine and mexiletine) are recognized as safe antiarrhythmics. Clinically, tachyarrhythmia is often initiated by a premature ectopic beat, which increases spatial nonuniformities in ventricular conduction and repolarization thus facilitating reentry. This study examined if electrical derangements evoked by premature excitation may be accentuated by flecainide and quinidine, but unchanged by lidocaine and mexiletine, which would explain the difference in their safety profile. In perfused guinea pig hearts, a premature excitation evoked over late repolarization phase was associated with prolonged epicardial activation time, reduced monophasic action potential duration (APD), and increased transepicardial dispersion of the activation time and APD. Flecainide and quinidine increased conduction slowing evoked by extrasystolic stimulation, prolonged APD, and accentuated spatial heterogeneities in ventricular conduction and repolarization associated with premature excitation. Spontaneous episodes of nonsustained monomorphic ventricular tachycardia were observed in 50% of heart preparations exposed to drug infusion. In contrast, lidocaine and mexiletine had no effect on extrasystolic stimulation-evoked changes in ventricular conduction and repolarization or arrhythmic susceptibility. These findings suggest that flecainide and quinidine may promote arrhythmia by exaggerating electrophysiological abnormalities evoked by ectopic beats.
Changes in proton relaxation times of the rat spleen during adjuvant-induced immunologic reaction.

Abstract:Possible changes in magnetic resonance (MR) relaxation times resulting from an immune reaction were evaluated in the rat spleen by means of in vitro proton spectroscopy and an established model of immune disease. Heat-killed Mycobacterium butyricum in Freund's adjuvant was injected intradermally into the tail of 28 rats. Ten normal rats served as controls. At different times following the injection of adjuvant (day 7, day 10, day 12, day 14, or day 22), the spleens were removed and weighed, and proton T1 and T2 relaxation times were measured with a 0.25-T spectrometer (10.7 MHz). Water content was also determined. Specimens of each spleen were histologically examined; this included Prussian-blue staining for detection of hemosiderin. In 22 of the 28 adjuvant-injected rats, spleen T1 values increased significantly, from a mean value of 451 msec +/- 23 S.D. (control rats) to a maximum mean value of 571 +/- 15 S.D., which occurred on day 12; this T1 increase paralleled an increase in weight and water content and a histologic appearance of granulomatous inflammation. In these rats, T2 changes were not significant. In the other six adjuvant-injected rats, spleen T2 relaxation time significantly decreased from a mean value of 42 msec +/- 5 S.D. to a mean value of 32 msec +/- 1 S.D. Histologic evaluation indicated that the origin of this T2 decrease was probably the presence of hemosiderin in the spleens of only these six rats. Mean T1 of these spleens decreased slightly, but not significantly.
Safety and feasibility of paired vagus nerve stimulation with rehabilitation for improving upper extremity function in people with cervical spinal cord injury: study protocol for a pilot randomized controlled trial

Abstract:Introduction: Pairing vagus nerve stimulation with traditional rehabilitation therapies results in improved motor recovery in people with stroke. However, this approach has not yet been studied in people with spinal cord injury (SCI). Motor recovery continues to be challenging after SCI, and there is a need for innovative research strategies to enhance motor recovery after SCI. Hence, this pilot randomized controlled trial aims to evaluate the safety, feasibility, and potential efficacy of pairing vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) with rehabilitation therapy to restore the motor function of the paretic upper limbs in people with cervical SCI. Methods and analysis: In this triple-blind, randomized, sham-controlled pilot study, 8 adults with chronic incomplete SCI will be implanted with a VNS device and randomly assigned to either active VNS (0.8 mA) control VNS (0.0 mA) paired with upper limb rehabilitation. Each participant will undergo 18 in-clinic therapy sessions over 6 weeks, each lasting 120 min and delivered three times per week. Following the in-clinic phase, participants will continue with a 90-day home exercise program. Participants in both groups will receive similar goal-directed and intense upper limb rehabilitation. The therapy is focused on active movements, task specificity, high number repetitions, variable practice, and active participant engagement. Post-treatment assessment will occur immediately after in-clinic therapy and at 30 and 90 days of follow-up. After completion of blinding at 90 days follow-up, participants in the control group will be offered 6 weeks of in-clinic active VNS (0.8 mA) paired with rehabilitation. The safety of pairing VNS with rehabilitation will be assessed by the occurrence of adverse events in each group, and feasibility by the number of treatment sessions and follow-up visits attended and the number of dropouts. Potential efficacy will be assessed by measuring the change in Graded Redefined Assessment of Strength, Sensibility and Prehension (GRASSP) performance from baseline to immediately after in-clinic therapy and to 90 days. Secondary clinical outcome measures are the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute Hand Function Test, Capabilities of Upper Extremity Questionnaire, Spinal Cord Injury Independence Measure-III self-care subscore, and Spinal Cord Injury-Quality of Life scale. Ethics and dissemination: The trial protocol was approved by the Institutional Review Board of UTHealth (HSC-MS-22-0579). We anticipate publishing the results in a peer-reviewed journal within 1 year of study completion. Clinical trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT05601661.

The Role of Exercise in the Alleviation of Neuropathic Pain Following Traumatic Spinal Cord Injuries: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Abstract:Objective: The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess the efficacy of exercise in neuropathic pain following traumatic spinal cord injuries.Methods: The search was conducted in MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science by the end of 2022. Two independent researchers included the articles based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. A standardized mean difference was calculated for each data and they were pooled to calculate an overall effect size. To assess the heterogeneity between studies, I 2 and chi-square tests were utilized. In the case of heterogeneity, meta-regression was performed to identify the potential source.Results: Fifteen preclinical studies were included. Meta-analysis demonstrated that exercise significantly improves mechanical allodynia (standardized mean difference [SMD], -1.59; 95% confidence interval [CI], -2.16 to -1.02; p < 0.001; I 2 = 90.37%), thermal hyperalgesia (SMD, 1.95; 95% CI, 0.96–2.94; p < 0.001), and cold allodynia (SMD, -2.92; 95% CI, -4.4 to -1.43; p < 0.001). The improvement in mechanical allodynia is significantly more in animals with a compression model of SCI (meta-regression coefficient, -1.33; 95% CI, -1.84 to -0.57; p < 0.001) and in mild SCI (p < 0.001). Additionally, the improvement was more prominent if the training was started 7 to 8 days postinjury (coefficient, -2.54; 95% CI, -3.85 to -1.23; p < 0.001) and was continued every day (coefficient, -1.99; 95% CI, -3.07 to -0.9; p < 0.001). Likewise, voluntary exercise demonstrated a significantly more effect size (coefficient, -1.45; 95% CI, -2.67 to -0.23; p = 0.02).Conclusion: Exercise is effective in the amelioration of neuropathic pain. This effect in mechanical allodynia is more prominent if voluntary, continuous training is initiated in the subacute phase of mild SCI.

Abstract:Background: Participating in an adequate amount of physical activity to acquire health benefits is challenging for people with spinal cord injury (SCI) due to personal and logistic barriers. Barriers in the built and social environments may include lack of transportation, lack of accessible facilities or programs, and lack of training among fitness personnel. Low self-efficacy, lack of self-regulation skills, and improper outcome expectations are examples of personal barriers. Current approaches to investigating physical activity programs in people with SCI have been limited to traditional "one-size-fits-all" design, which has yielded low adherence rates, high dropout rates, and participants not maintaining physical activity levels at follow-up. Objective: The primary aim of this study is to test the feasibility of a tele-exercise program that applies an adaptive intervention design for 30 adults with SCI, targeting increases in adherence to the exercise program and physical activity participation. Methods: The Sequential Multiple Assignment Randomized Trial for Home-based Exercise and Lifestyle Tele-Health (SMART-HEALTH) is a 12-week, home-based, movement-to-music (M2M) program. The goal of a SMART-designed study is to develop an adaptive intervention that modifies support provisions based on response levels. In SMART-HEALTH, 2 groups of participants will undergo 3-week and 6-week asynchronous M2M interventions in the first phase. Participants who did not achieve the desired adherence rate (≥95% of video watch minutes) will be rerandomized into M2M Live (switch) or individualized behavioral coaching (augmented with the asynchronous M2M program). The study will primarily assess rates of recruitment or enrollment, adherence and retention, timing to identify nonresponders, and scientific outcomes (eg, physical activity and exercise self-efficacy). The study will qualitatively evaluate the acceptability of the study using semistructured interviews among participants who complete the 12-week intervention. Results: Recruitment procedures started in June 2022. All data are expected to be collected by September 2023. Full trial results are expected to be published by March 2024. Secondary analyses of data will be subsequently published. Results will include exercise adherence rates; changes in self-reported physical activity levels and blood pressure; and changes in secondary conditions including pain, sleep, and fatigue. Thematic analysis of semistructured interviews will include results on participant enjoyment and acceptability of SMART-HEALTH and inform modifications for future delivery of the program. Conclusions: This study will strengthen our understanding of the potential benefits of the tele-exercise intervention for people with SCI and build upon adaptive intervention design and its delivery strategies that aim to increase adoption and sustainable exercise behavior. This pilot trial will inform future SMART-designed studies and provide new and innovative strategies for investigating intervention effects on physical activity behavior in the SCI population. The Impact of Activity-Based Interventions on Neuropathic Pain in Experimental Spinal Cord Injury

Abstract:Physical activity-based rehabilitative interventions represent the main treatment concept for people suffering from spinal cord injury (SCI). The role such interventions play in the relief of neuropathic pain (NP) states is emerging, along with underlying mechanisms resulting in SCI-induced NP (SCI-NP). Animal models have been used to investigate the benefits of activity-based interventions (ABI), such as treadmill training, wheel running, walking, swimming, and bipedal standing. These activity-based paradigms have been shown to modulate inflammatory-related alterations as well as induce functional and structural changes in the spinal cord gray matter circuitry correlated with pain behaviors. Thus far, the research available provides an incomplete picture of the cellular and molecular pathways involved in this beneficial effect. Continued research is essential for understanding how such interventions benefit SCI patients suffering from NP and allow the development of individualized rehabilitative therapies. This article reviews preclinical studies on this specific topic, goes over mechanisms involved in SCI-NP in relation to ABI, and then discusses the effectiveness of different activity-based paradigms as they relate to different forms, intensity, initiation times, and duration of ABI. This article also summarizes the mechanisms of respective interventions to ameliorate NP after SCI and provides suggestions for future research directions.

Feasibility of using remotely delivered Spring Forest Qigong to reduce neuropathic pain in adults with spinal cord injury: a pilot study

Abstract:Introduction: Approximately 69% of 299,000 Americans with spinal cord injury (SCI) suffer debilitating chronic neuropathic pain, which is intractable to treatment. The aim of this study is to determine feasibility, as the primary objective, and estimates of efficacy of a remotely delivered Qigong intervention in adults with SCI-related neuropathic pain, as the secondary objective. Methods: We recruited adults with SCI-related neuropathic pain, with SCI ≥3 months, with complete or incomplete SCI, and highest neuropathic pain level of >3 on the Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS), using nationwide volunteer sampling. Using a non-randomized controlled trial design, participants practiced Spring Forest Qigong's "Five Element Qigong Healing Movements" (online video) by combining movement to the best of their ability with kinesthetic imagery, at least 3x/week for 12 weeks. Adherence was automatically tracked through the Spring Forest Qigong website. Outcomes of neuropathic pain intensity (NPRS) were assessed weekly, and SCI-related symptoms were assessed at baseline, 6, and 12 weeks of Qigong practice and at 6-week and 1-year follow-ups. Results: We recruited 23 adults with chronic SCI (7/2021–2/2023). In total, 18 participants started the study and completed all study components, including the 6-week follow-up. Twelve participants completed the 1-year follow-up assessment. Feasibility was demonstrated through participants' willingness to participate, adherence, and acceptability of the study. Mean age of the 18 participants was 60 ± 12 years, and they were 15 ± 11 years post-SCI with the highest baseline neuropathic pain of 7.94 ± 2.33, which was reduced to 4.17 ± 3.07 after 12 weeks of Qigong practice (Cohen's d = 1.75). This pain relief remained at 6-week and 1-year follow-ups. Participants reported reduced spasm frequency (change score 1.17 ± 1.20, d = 0.98) and severity (0.72 ± 1.02, d = 0.71), reduced interference of neuropathic pain on mood (3.44 ± 2.53, d = 1.36), sleep (3.39 ± 2.40, d = 1.41), daily activities (3.17 ± 2.77, d = 1.14), greater ability to perform functional activities (6.68 ± 3.07, d = 2.18), and improved mood (2.33 ± 3.31, d = 0.70) after Qigong. Discussion: Remote Spring Forest Qigong's "Five Element Qigong Healing Movements" practice is feasible in adults with SCI-related neuropathic pain, with promising prolonged results of neuropathic pain relief and improvement in SCI-related symptoms after Qigong practice. Abstract:Study design: A feasibility pilot study. Objective: To assess the feasibility a full-scale Randomized Controlled Trial aimed at assessing the beneficial effect of a Virtual Walking (VW)-based (Experimental intervention (EI)) on neuropathic pain and functionality in people with incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI). Setting: A hospital service (Hospital Universitario y Politécnico La Fe) and disability associations (TetraSport, CODIFIVA and ASPAYM). Methods: Twelve people with chronic incomplete SCI were randomized to EI (VW plus therapeutic exercise program (TE)) -or Control Intervention (CI (placebo VW and TE)) groups. A six-week intervention (3 sessions/week) was carried out. To assess feasibility, the following outcomes were used: level of restriction and validity of inclusion and exclusion criteria, participants' compliance, accessibility and acceptability of the intervention for participants, adequate pre-training time of physiotherapists. To explore therapy effectiveness, pain severity, and interference, mean and maximum isometric strength, walking speed, and walking ability were assessed before (Time 1, T1) and after (Time 2, T2) the intervention. Results: 20% of the participants initially recruited did not meet inclusion criteria. In addition, all participants completed at least 80% of the intervention sessions and none of the participants dropped out before T2. No serious adverse event was found. Moreover, 91.67% of participants were willing to perform the intervention again and all therapists involved were adequately pre-trained. Finally, our preliminary results suggest that the proposed EI is effective. Conclusion: A full-scale RCT is feasible and preliminary results suggest that VW with TE could have a beneficial impact on pain and functionality in this population.

Abstract:A contactless Electro-Magnetic Isolator (EMI) is designed for gravity compensation of a heavy payload by passive Permanent Magnetic (PM) force and control by active Lorentz force. The theoretically calculated PM force and torque produced by this EMI are presented. To characterize the EMI and to evaluate the vibration isolation performance, the Single EMI System (SEMIS) is designed by adding three horizontal and three vertical Lorentz actuators for control. It is a six Degrees-of-Freedom (DOF) contactless electromagnetic suspension system possessing the properties of inherent instability, nonlinearity, no mechanical contact, passive gravity compensation. The physical SEMIS model is developed based on reasonable assumptions and approximations. It is subsequently linearized for control design. The vibration isolation performance of the two control strategies, decoupled control and decentralized control, are simulated and compared. The results show that decentralized control has more significant coupling than the decoupled control for only two DOF-pairs.

Abstract:The effects of the intra ventricularly administered cations (Mn2+, Ca2+, Mg2+ and Li+) against the seizure induced by ouabain (3 μg) were investigated. Mn2+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ caused definite sedation and decreased locomotor activity. But Li+ was without significant behavioral effect at the doses applied. Among the cations used, Mn2+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ showed significant anticonvulsive effect on the ouabain‐induced seizure. In comparison, on the dose and molarto‐molar basis, the potency of anticonvulsive action was in the following order: Mn2+ > Ca2+ > Mg2+. On the contrary, the higher dose of Li+ potentiated the ouabaininduced seizure. The importance of the increased Ca2+ level in the extracellular space or the inhibition of Ca2+ uptake as the anticonvulsive effect of Ca2+, Mn2+ and Mg2+ was discussed.
