Abstract:Objective: To analysis of high-frequency hearing loss status and risk factors among male noise workers in an automobile manufacturing enterprise in Guangzhou. Methods: From February 2020, a cluster sampling method was used to select 3486 male workers exposed to noise in an automobile manufacturing enterprise in Guangzhou in 2018. After screening, 2608 were selected as the research objects. Pure tone hearing threshold test, noise exposure level test and questionnaire survey were conducted, and the cumulative noise exposure was calculated. Chi square test and unconditional logistic regression were used to analyze the correlation between various factors and high frequency hearing loss. Results: The detection rate of high-frequency hearing loss in noise exposed workers was 34.20% (892/2608) , there were significant differences in the two groups among age, marital status, years of noise exposure, noise exposure equivalent A sound level, CNE, different working hours and exposure to electromagnetic radiation (P<0.05) . Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that age, CNE and exposure to electromagnetic radiation were independent risk factors for high-frequency hearing loss (P<0.05) , three shifts and two shifts were the protective factors for the occurrence of high-frequency hearing loss (OR=0.523, P<0.01) . Conclusion: Noise exposure is the main influencing factor of high-frequency hearing loss of noise-receiving workers in automobile manufacturing enterprises. Enterprises should strengthen noise control in the workplace, improve the working environment of electromagnetic radiation, and implement a scientific and healthy work shift system.

Abstract:Investigation of the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis has led us to discover new candidate molecules as targets in RA therapeutic strategies. Gene therapy offers one of the best tools to deliver of such therapeutic molecules into the affected joints. In the past, many gene therapy trials preferred viral delivery methods to non-viral methods because of the difference in gene transfer efficiency. However, viral methods have many unresolved problems mainly related to safety. One example is immunogenicity of adenovirus vector. Efforts have been made to improve viral vectors for clinical application.

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the influence of individual factors and labor organization on the prevalence of neck pain (hereinafter referred to as neck pain) in automotive assemblers, and to provide a basis for enterprises to optimize neck pain interventions. Methods: A cluster random sampling method was taken in January 2021, at an automobile manufacturing plant in Shiyan, 656 assemblers with ≥1.0 years of service were selected, the "Musculoskeletal Disorder Questionnaire" was used to investigate the incidence and influencing factors of neck pain. Pearson χ(2) test or trend χ(2) test was used to compare the data rates. The influencing factors of neck pain were analyzed by multivariate logistic regression. Results: The prevalence rate of neck pain (hereinafter referred to as the prevalence rate of neck pain) of automobile assemblers within one year was 53.94% (342/634) . The prevalence of neck pain in women was higher than that in men (69.1% vs 48.6%, P<0.01) . The prevalence of neck pain was related to length of service, self-assessment of fatigue, working hours per week, working in the same workshop, rest days per shift, and accumulated rest time per shift (P<0.05) . Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the risk of neck pain in women was 2.434 times higher than that in men; The risk of neck pain increased by 18.9% for each hour of work per week; Rest during work was a protective factor for neck pain. The number of rest per shift increased and the risk of neck pain decreased (r=0.405, 0.311, 0.302, 95%CI=0.205~0.803, 0.169~0.572, 0.142~0.642, P<0.05) . Conclusion: The annual prevalence of neck pain was higher in automobile assemblers. Enterprises should fully consider the influencing factors such as gender, working hours per week and the number of breaks when arranging production.

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the occurrence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) in the cabinet factory workers, and explore the influencing factors of workers' WMSDs. Methods: A cross-sectional survey method was used to investigate the risk factors such as basic conditions, labox dnganiza, ergonomics load and occurrence of WMSDs of 821 workers in a cabinet factory of a furniture manufacturing company in Guangdong Province using the electronic version of the Musculoskeletal Injury Questionnaire from October to December 2019. χ(2) test and logistic regression were used to analyze the risk factors leading to WMSDs. Results: The incidence of WMSDs in cabinet production workers reached 51.5% (423/821) , and the top three incidences were shoulder (28.4%, 233/821) , neck (28.1%, 231/821) , and wrist (25.9%, 213/821) . The incidence of neck WMSDs was statistically significant among different types of work (P<0.05) . Multiple repetitive operations per minute (OR=1.70) , torso often maintaining the same posture (OR=1.61) , turning heads for a long time (OR=1.58) and frequent heavy lifting (OR=1.44) were risk factors for the occurrence of shoulder WMSDs (P<0.05) . Frequent maintenance of the same posture in the neck (OR=1.91) , repeated operations per minute (OR=1.87) , shortage of department staff (OR=1.65) and turning head for a long time (OR=1.48) were risk factors for the occurrence of neck WMSDs (P<0.05) . Long-term bending of the wrist (OR=2.25) , grasping objects tightly (OR=2.13) , working hard on the upper limbs or hands (OR=1.91) , shortage of department personnel (OR=1.84) , repeated operations per minute (OR=1.68) and the use of vibration tools (OR=1.51) were risk factors for the occurrence of WMSDs in the wrist (P<0.05) . Conclusion: The incidence of WMSDs in cabinet factory is relatively high, the occurrence of WMSDs in the shoulders, necks and wrists is more serious. Reasonable labor organization and reducing the load of poor ergonomics in the workplace, can reduce the occurrence of WMSDs in production workers.
Relationship between ergonomic exposures and work-related musculoskeletal disorders of assembly workers in assembly manufacturing enterprises

Abstract:BackgroundChina's manufacturing industry is still labor-intensive, and assembly employees in manufacturing industry are facing a great risk of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs). ObjectiveTo investigate and analyze the prevalence and distribution of WMSDs among assembly workers in manufacturing enterprises and explore the relationship between WMSDs and ergonomic exposure factors such as posture load and mental load. MethodsFrom July to September 2017, by convenient sampling, a cross-sectional survey was conducted to select 670 workers engaged in electronic accessories assembly and railway vehicle manufacturing in three manufacturing enterprises in two cities in northern China as the research participants. The posture load assessment was based on the Chinese Musculoskeletal Questionnaire independently developed by our research group. The mental load assessment was based on a revised Chinese version of the Subjective Workload Assessment Technique. An unconditional logistic regression model was used to explore the relationship between ergonomic exposure and WMSDs. ResultsThe overall prevalence rate of WMSDs was 39.6% (265/670) with 43.8% in males and 25.2% in females; the highest prevalence rate was 47.7% in the group aged 40 years and over. The prevalence rate of WMSDs in the electronic accessories assembly workers was 16.9%, that in the railway vehicle manufacturing workers was 57.3%, and the difference was statistically significant (\begin{document}$ {\chi ^2} $\end{document}=112.63, P<0.001). The mental load score [median (first quartile, third quartile)] was 55.6 (51.9, 83.3) points, and the posture load score was 27.1 (16.0, 41.5) points. The results of unconditional logistic regression model showed that women (OR=3.152, 95%CI: 1.458-6.813), drinkers (OR=1.934, 95%CI: 1.124-3.326), and railway vehicle manufacturing worker (OR=3.416, 95%CI: 1.756-6.644) had a higher risk of reporting WMSDs; The higher the mental load (OR=1.019, 95%CI: 1.007-1.031) and posture load (OR=1.034, 95%CI: 1.019-1.050), the higher the risk of reporting WMSDs. The hierarchical analysis results showed that the risk of reporting WMSDs was higher among the electronic accessories assembly workers who were older (compared with those aged <30 years, OR30-39=2.526 and OR≥40=12.263, respectively) and with higher posture load (OR=1.025, 95%CI: 1.002-1.049), as well as among the railway vehicle manufacturing workers who were drinking (OR=2.035, 95%CI: 1.155-3.583), obese (OR=3.094, 95%CI: 1.185-8.078), with higher mental load (OR=1.013, 95%CI: 1.001-1.025) and posture load (OR=1.033, 95%CI: 1.018-1.049). ConclusionThere is a significant correlation between reporting WMSDs and ergonomic exposures such as posture load and mental load, and drinking is also a risk factor of WMSDs. The risk of reporting WMSDs in female workers in assembly manufacturing industry is higher than that in male workers. The overall prevalence rate of WMSDs in railway vehicle manufacturing workers is higher than that in electronic accessories assembly workers.

Abstract:BackgroundThe prevalence rate of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) among manufacturing workers is relatively high and has been widely concerned. However, research on the prevalence and risk factors of multi-site WMSDs is still insufficient. ObjectiveTo explore the prevalence and risk factors of multi-site WMSDs of assembly workers in four manufacturing enterprises. MethodsThe "Chinese Musculoskeletal Questionnaire" was used to conduct a cross-sectional survey among 1401 assembly workers selected by convenient sampling in four manufacturing enterprises, and their demographic characteristics, the prevalence of WMSDs in various body parts, and the information about biomechanical factors, work organizations, work environment, and psychosocial factor exposure were collected. The prevalence of WMSDs and multi-site WMSDs were estimated, Pearson χ2 test was used for univariate analysis of multi-site WMSDs risk factors, and logistic regression was used for multi-factor analysis. ResultsThe total prevalence rate of WMSDs was 54.9% (769/1 401). The top three affected sites were neck (41.4%), shoulders (30.7%), and wrist/hand (25.1%). The prevalence rate of multi-site WMSDs was 41.9% (587/1 401). The prevalence rates of multi-site WMSDs in railway vehicle assembly and riveting workers were higher than those in electronic parts processing and glass manufacturing workers (P<0.001). The results of logistic regression analysis showed that individual factors such as female (OR=2.09, 95%CI: 1.48−2.97) and drinking (OR=1.52, 95%CI: 1.05−2.18), biomechanics factors such as keeping head down for a long time (OR=1.37, 95%CI: 1.22–1.53), keeping bending frequently (OR=1.18, 95%CI: 1.03–1.34), and keeping arms up for a long time (OR=1.25, 95%CI: 1.10–1.41), work organizational factors such as electronic parts processing, railway vehicle assembly, and riveting (OR values were 3.23, 5.70, and 13.83, respectively), environmental factors such as temperature a little cold (OR=4.84, 95%CI: 1.90–12.37), noise seriously affecting work (OR=2.25, 95%CI: 1.23–4.11), and psychosocial factors such as high job demands (OR=1.47, 95%CI: 1.04–2.08), fatigue after work (OR=1.92−2.61) were risk factors of multi-site WMSDs. ConclusionThe prevalence rate of multi-site WMSDs in assembly workers is high, and the main influencing factors include individual factors, awkward work postures, environmental factors, and psychosocial factors.

Abstract:Objective: This study aims to investigate the one-year prevalence and the associated factors of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) among furniture manufacturing workers in Guangdong, China. Methods: A cross-sectional study of 4181 (2953 males and 1228 females) furniture manufacturing workers was conducted between September 2019 and December 2019. All information about WMSDs was collected by the electronic version of Chinese Musculoskeletal Questionnaires (CMQ). Descriptive statistics and a binary logistic regression model were used to interpret the data. Result: The overall prevalence of WMSDs was 31.57%. The WMSD symptoms most commonly occurred in the neck (16.77%), followed by the shoulders (14.90%), ankles/feet (14.64%), hands/wrists (13.30%), upper back (11.48%), and lower back (10.95%). Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that several individual, labor organization, and ergonomics-related factors conferred significant risks to WMSDs at different body sites. Conclusions: WMSDs remain the major occupational health problem for furniture manufacturing workers. Hence, some effective and feasible protective measures for furniture manufacturing workers are required in order to alleviate the health burden caused by WMSDs.
A study of the impact of working with computer on musculoskeletal disorders in the neck among office workers

Abstract:Objective Background The aim of this study was to estimate and to determine risk factors for WMSDs in the neck (WMSDs-N).Methods In a cross-sectional study,a self-administered questionnaire was delivered to office workers who used computer as a main working tool.Odds ratios (ORs)were calculated for risk factors.Results The prevalence of WMSDs of neck amongst office workers were 5 5.5%.Being female was the individual risk factor of the WMSDs-N.Computer users over 4 hours per day,holding the head in a forward position for a prolonged time,not havigng breaks at work time,feeling not have enough rest time were found to be independently related to WMSDs-N.Conclusions Computer work has many adverse effects on the neck musculoskeletal,for reducing the risk of WMSDs-N comprehensive measures should be taken. Rest breaks could be effective preventive measures to reduce the impact.
[Survey on the Occupational Musculoskeletal Disorder and Its Risk Factors among Male Steelworkers].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To study the prevalence of occupational musculoskeletal disorders (OMSD) of male steelworkers and explore its occupational and individual risk factors.METHODS:1620 male workers from a steel mill were selected as subjects through random cluster sampling in 2010. A revised Nordic Musculoskeletal disorder standard questionnaire and a questionnaire from National Institute for Occupational and Health of the Netherlands were used to ask and record the OMSD and its risk factors. The questionnaires were filled in by the workers. Annual prevalence of OMSD in different parts of the body were counted according to different age, working years and educational level, logistic regression was used to analyze its influence factors.RESULTS:OMSD in these workers primarily located in waist, neck and shoulders, annual prevalence were 51.0% (825), 48.5% (785) and 37.7% (610) respectively. Annual prevalence of other body parts were 28.0% (454) for back, 23.6% (383) for knee, 21.0% (341) for wrist, 17.9% (290) for ankle/foot, 14.1% (229) for elbow and 12.7% (205) for coxa. The annual prevalence of OMSD for each part tended to increase with age, mainly in waist and neck. Of the different age groups ≤ 24, 25 - 29, 30 - 34, 35 - 39, 40 - 44, 45 - 49, ≥ 50, the annual prevalence in waist was 26.4% (43/163), 37.8% (71/188), 52.8% (162/307), 55.6% (160/288), 53.8% (99/184), 55.9% (80/143), 61.6% (204/331) respectively (χ(2) = 72.5, P < 0.05); correspondingly, the annual prevalence in neck was 22.7% (37/163), 40.4% (76/188), 50.2% (154/307), 48.6% (140/288), 56.0% (103/184), 53.1% (76/143), 57.7% (191/331) respectively (χ(2) = 65.3, P < 0.05). The annual prevalence of OMSD increased with the working years. Of the different working years groups ≤ 4, 5 - 9, 10 - 14, 15 - 19, 20 - 24, 25 - 29, ≥ 30, the annual prevalence in waist was 30.2% (85/281), 46.2% (66/143), 56.4% (162/287), 56.8% (137/241), 50.6% (78/154), 59.2% (90/152), 60.7% (173/285) respectively (χ(2) = 71.3, P < 0.05);correspondingly, the annual prevalence in neck was 28.8% (81/281), 49.0% (70/143), 52.6% (151/287), 50.2% (121/241), 51.9% (80/154), 53.9% (82/152), 59.3% (169/285) respectively (χ(2) = 61.5, P < 0.05). The annual prevalence of OMSD decreased with education level. Of the different groups of education level (junior high school level and below, senior high school level, university level or above), the OMSD prevalence in waist was 61.5% (176/286), 61.9% (359/692), 44.2% (272/615) respectively (χ(2) = 26.0, P < 0.05);correspondingly, the annual prevalence in neck was 56.3% (161/286), 50.0% (346/692), 42.3% (260/615)respectively (χ(2) = 21.2, P < 0.05). Univariate logistic regression showed that the work load factors such as the working years ≥ 30 (OR = 3.562, 95%CI: 2.514 - 5.046), maintain substantial stoop for a long time (OR = 2.003, 95%CI: 1.612 - 2.488), often stooping with vast scale (OR = 1.897, 95%CI: 1.557 - 2.312), and torso repeating same action many times per minute (OR = 1.870, 95%CI: 1.529 - 2.288) could increase the annual prevalence of OMSD in waist most likely (P < 0.05). The working years ≥ 30 (OR = 3.597, 95%CI: 2.535 - 5.105), neck leaning forward (OR = 2.455, 95%CI: 2.010-2.99), neck leaning back (OR = 1.999, 95%CI: 1.569 - 2.546), and neck rotation (OR = 2.381, 95%CI: 1.907 - 2.972) were main risk factors causing OMSD in neck (P < 0.05).CONCLUSION:The most serious musculoskeletal disorders of male steelworkers were waist and neck pain. Personal factors such as age, working years, work load factors such as harmful working postures, manual heavy lifting, and labour organizational factors such as work overtime were the main risk factors of musculoskeletal disorders to the male steelworkers.
[Prevalence of Breast and Gynecological Diseases in Female Workers in the Administrative Office and Workshop of an Automobile Part Factory].

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the prevalence of breast and gynecological diseases in female workers in the administrative office and workshop of an automobile part factory, and to provide a basis for promoting the health of female workers. Methods: In March 2015, color ultrasound examination of the breast, uterus, and bilateral adnexa was performed for all female workers, and routine gynecological examination, routine leucorrhea examination, and thinprep liquid-based cytology test were performed for married female workers. The detection rates of breast and gynecological diseases in female workers in the administrative office and workshop were analyzed. Results: In the 314 female workers, the overall detection rate of breast and gynecological diseases was 86.31%; the detection rate of abnormal breast ultrasound results was 72.93%, mainly breast hyperplasia; the detection rate of abnormal gynecological ultrasound results was 12.14%, mainly hysteromyoma, pelvic effusion, and uterus-rectum fossa effusion. The overall detection rate of cervicitis or vaginitis in married female workers was 66.86%. The univariate analysis showed that compared with those in the administrative office, the female workers in the workshop had significantly higher detection rates of breast hyperplasia and grade 2 breast lesions on the Breast Imaging-Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) and significantly lower detection rates of hysteromyoma and grade 3 breast lesions on the BI-RADS (all P <0.05) . The multivariate analysis showed that age was a risk factor for hysteromyoma (OR=1.261) , age and working in the workshop were risk factors for breast hyperplasia (OR=1.065 and 1.834) , married status was a protective factor against breast hyperplasia and grade 2 breast lesions on the BI-RADS (OR=0.334 and 0.450) , and working in workshop was a risk factor for grade 2 breast lesions on the BI-RADS (OR=1.890) and a protective factor against grade 3 breast lesions on the BI-RADS (OR=0.355) . Conclusion: Female workers in an automobile part factory have high prevalence rates of breast and gynecological diseases. Night shifts for female workers in the workshop should be reduced as much as possible, and female workers, especially those in the administrative office, should be guided to release pressure and take a balanced diet.

Abstract:Background: Modeling with methods based on machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence can help understand the complex relationships between ergonomic risk factors and employee health. The aim of this study was to use ML methods to estimate the effect of individual factors, ergonomic interventions, quality of work life (QWL), and productivity on work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) in the neck area of office workers. Study Design: A quasi-randomized control trial. Methods: To measure the impact of interventions, modeling with the ML method was performed on the data of a quasi-randomized control trial. The data included the information of 311 office workers (aged 32.04±5.34). Method neighborhood component analysis (NCA) was used to measure the effect of factors affecting WMSDs, and then support vector machines (SVMs) and decision tree algorithms were utilized to classify the decrease or increase of disorders. Results: Three classified models were designed according to the follow-up times of the field study, with accuracies of 86.5%, 80.3%, and 69%, respectively. These models could estimate most influencer factors with acceptable sensitivity. The main factors included age, body mass index, interventions, QWL, some subscales, and several psychological factors. Models predicted that relative absenteeism and presenteeism were not related to the outputs. Conclusion: In this study, the focus was on disorders in the neck, and the obtained models revealed that individual and management interventions can be the main factors in reducing WMSDs in the neck. Modeling with ML methods can create a new understanding of the relationships between variables affecting WMSDs.

Abstract:BackgroundWork-related musculoskeletal diseases (WMSDs) occur in a variety of occupational populations. Because of their various discomfort and serious disease burden, they have become an important issue worthy of attention in the field of occupational health. The prevention and control of WMSDs is one of the public health problems to be solved.ObjectiveTo evaluate the intervention effect on WMSDs among assembly workers in a railway vehicle manufacturing enterprise, so as to provide scientific basis for the prevention and control of WMSDs.MethodsA total of 250 assembly workers in a railway vehicle manufacturing enterprise were selected using convenience sampling from August to December 2017. The Chinese Musculoskeletal Questionnaire was used for epidemiological investigation, and the Ergonomic Checkpoints was used for ergonomic inspection and worker interview. According to the above survey results, a six-month intervention plan including stepladder improvement and ergonomics training were implemented in the assembly workshop from September 2018 to February 2019. The intervention effects including the awareness of WMSDs, the exposure level of ergonomic load, and the occurrence of WMSDs symptoms were evaluated with relevant cross-sectional survey results before and after the intervention. The scores of WMSDs symptom intensity, symptom duration, and symptom frequency from low to high were 0-10, 1-4, and 1-5, respectively.ResultsAfter the intervention, the awareness rates of assembly workers on WMSDs types, affected body sites, influencing factors, preventive measures, and symptoms all increased from 52.3%, 51.9%, 25.5%, 19.1%, and 51.5% to 68.5%, 61.3%, 48.1%, 40.9%, and 61.3%, respectively (P<0.05). After the intervention, the proportion of assembly workers who "often" bend their head backwards frequently decreased from 34.6% to 21.8%, the proportion who "often" keep their trunk backward for a long time decreased from 26.6% to 15.0%, and the proportion who "never" raise their arms frequently increased from 3.4% to 9.0% (P<0.05). After the intervention, the scores of WMSDs symptom intensity in neck, shoulders, upper back, low back, elbows, hands/wrists, hips/thighs, knees, and ankles/feet all decreased, and the medians were mostly decreased from 6 to 3 (P<0.05); the scores of WMSDs symptom duration only decreased in neck (P<0.05) and there was no significant difference in the other body sites before and after the intervention; the median scores of WMSDs symptom frequency in low back, hands/wrists, and hips/thighs decreased from 3 to 2 (P<0.05).ConclusionThe six-month intervention of stepladder improvement and ergonomics training among assembly workers in a railway vehicle manufacturing enterprise can improve workers' awareness of WMSDs, and reduce the exposure frequency of awkward postures and the intensity, duration, and frequency of WMSDs symptoms.
[Risk Factors Analysis of Low Back Pain among Workers in a Foundry Factory of the Automobile Company].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To study the main risk factors of low back pain of workers ina foundry factory of the automobile company using cross sectional epidemiological investigation, and to provide scientific base for preventing the disorder. METHODS The low back pain and work loads of 1340 workers in a foundry factory of the automobile company were investigated using questionnaire, and logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the risk factors. RESULTS The one-year morbidity of low back pain in workers was 58.9% the morbidities of low back pain in workers engaged in foundry, transportation and modeling were 64.6%, 64.6% and 62.5%, respectively. The lifting with squat postures, bending trunk heavily, bending trunk with twisting and moving the heavy objects were found to be the most dominant risk factors for low-back pain, the OR values were 2.085, 1.961, 1.967 and 1.956, respectively. The distributions of risk factors were different among the different jobs. The logistic regression analysis showed that moving the heavy objects, lifting with squat postures, bending trunk heavily, bending trunk with twisting existed simultaneously, also the work years and gender were the risk factors. CONCLUSION The manual moving heavy objects, awkward working posture or both were the most important risk factors for low-back pain. The intervene ergonomic study should be performed in future to reduce the morbidity of low-back pain.
Are Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders Claims Related to Risk Factors in Workplaces of the Manufacturing Industry?

Abstract:Abstract Objectives Varied work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) claim rates were found between companies even when they were in the same sectors with similar sizes. This study aimed to (i) identify common risk factors for back, shoulder, hand/wrist, and knee WMSDs among manufacturing jobs, and (ii) characterize the biomechanical exposures in jobs and work organizational practices between high and low WMSD claim rate companies so that more focused, industry-specific intervention strategies may be developed. Methods Using historical workers’ compensation data, manufacturing companies were divided into two paired groups (low and high in the lower 25%ile and higher 75%ile, respectively). On-site job evaluations were conducted in 16 companies to determine job biomechanical risk levels. Management and workers’ representatives in 32 paired companies were interviewed to identify possible differences between management strategies and management/worker relationships. A total of 39 injured workers were also interviewed to gather information of self-reported injury causes and suggested preventive measures. Results Analyses of 432 job evaluations showed that more jobs had higher risk levels of prolonged standing and heavy lifting in the high back WMSD claim rate companies than the low claim rate ones. No high biomechanical risk factors were found to be associated with jobs in high shoulder claim rate companies. High repetition, pinch force, and Strain Index were associated with high hand/wrist WMSD claim rate companies. High work pace and job stress were common among high knee WMSD claim rate companies. There were no statistically significant differences for the organizational factors between high and low WMSD claim rate companies. Heavy lifting, fast work pace, high hand/wrist repetition, high hand force, and awkward shoulder postures were identified as major contributing factors by the injured workers. Conclusions High WMSD claim rate companies appeared to have more high biomechanical exposure jobs than low WMSD claim rate companies. Available job evaluation methods for the low back and hand/wrists are satisfactory in quantifying job risk levels in the manufacturing industry. Research into more sensitive job evaluation methods for the shoulder and knee are needed.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the one-year prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms and associated risk factors in a large sample of Chinese workers in various industrial settings.Methods A total of 5,338 (3,632 males and 1,706 females) workers from 13 companies participated in this study. Musculoskeletal symptoms in different body regions in the previous year and their risk factors were assessed by a self-reported questionnaire. Logistic regression analyses were performed to estimate the individual, work-related physical and psychosocial risk factors for the musculoskeletal symptoms.Results The most commonly affected body regions among the workers were lower back (59.7%), neck (48.6%), shoulders (38.8%), and wrists (33.5%). Female workers had greater prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms in the neck, shoulders, and wrists than male workers. Results of multivariate analyses indicated that individual, work-related physical and psychosocial factors were associated with the musculoskeletal symptoms.Conclusion The results suggest that interventions aimed at reducing musculoskeletal symptoms in the Chinese working population should take into account multiple risk areas including individual, physical job characteristics and work-related psychosocial factors. Cervical Musculoskeletal Disorders and Their Relationships with Personal and Work-Related Factors among Electronic Assembly Workers.

Abstract:Introduction: Electronics assembly workers are reported to have a high prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). This study investigated the prevalence of cervical MSDs and the complex relationships between cervical MSDs and individual, physical, psychosocial factors among electronics assembly workers. Methods: In this cross-sectional survey, self-administered questionnaires from 700 workers in electronics manufacturing workshops were analysed. Information concerning musculoskeletal symptoms, personal and work-related factors was collected. Finally, the prevalence of cervical MSDs was computed for different subgroups, and the relationships with different factors were analyzed using logistic regression and structural equation modeling (SEM). Results: The total 12 month prevalence of cervical MSDs among the survey population was 29.4%. Variables of gender, job tenure, twisting head frequently, neck flexion/extension for long time and work required to be done quickly showed significant associations with MSDs in a multivariate logistic regression (P < 0.05). The SEM analysis showed moderate and significant correlations between postural load (gamma = 0.279), gender (gamma = 0.233) and cervical MSDs, while there were weak but significant correlations between vibration (gamma = 0.024), work stress (gamma = 0.126), job tenure (gamma = 0.024) and cervical MSDs. Both work stress and vibration affected the MSDs indirectly through postural load. Conclusions: The logistic regression results support previous general epidemiological MSD studies, and indicates that individual, physical, and psychosocial factors are related to cervical MSDs. The SEM provides a better approximation of the complexity of the relationship between risk factors and cervical MSDs. Improving awkward postures may be effective ways to control the influence of occupational stressors or vibration on MSDs. Practical Applications: The study is to improve prevention of MSDs among electronics assembly workers and promote their occupational health. (C) 2019 National Safety Council and Elsevier Ltd.
