Abstract:(1) Background: Mild cognitive impairment is becoming one of the most common clinical manifestations affecting older people. For this reason, developing non-pharmacological strategies to help improve or maintain the physical condition of patients with mild dementia has become a priority. Therefore, the objective of this study is to provide evidence about the effects of a cognitive stimulation program on cognitive performance, anxiety, depression, and quality of life in people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and aged > 70. (2) Methods: This study is a randomized clinical trial. A total of 72 elderly people with MCI participated: 35 in the control group who did not receive any intervention and 36 in the experimental group who received a cognitive stimulation program for 12 weeks. Cognitive performance, depression, anxiety and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) were measured using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Yesavage Geriatric Depression Scale, the Hamilton Rating Scale, and the SF-12, respectively. (3) Results: In the experimental group, significant results were obtained on cognitive performance, depression, anxiety and general health, emotional role, social functioning, vitality, mental health and mental component summary domains of the SF-12. (4) Conclusions: a cognitive stimulation program of 12 weeks improves cognitive performance, anxiety, depression, and HRQoL in people with MCI aged > 70.

Abstract:Ageing entails changes in complex cognitive functions that lead to a decrease in autonomy and quality of life. Everyday cognition is the ability to solve cognitively complex problems in the everyday world, enabling instrumental activities of life. Benefits have been found in studies using everyday cognition-based assessment and intervention, as the results predict improvements in everyday performance, not just in specific cognitive functions. A study protocol is presented based on assessment and training in everyday cognition versus traditional cognitive stimulation for the improvement of functionality, emotional state, frailty and cognitive function. A parallel randomised controlled clinical trial with two arms will be conducted. It will be carried out by the University of Salamanca (Spain) in eleven centres and associations for the elderly of the City Council of Salamanca. People aged 60 years or older without cognitive impairment will be recruited. Participants will be randomly distributed into two groups: the experimental group will undergo a training programme in everyday cognition and the control group a programme of traditional cognitive stimulation, completing 25 sessions over 7 months. All participants will be assessed at the beginning and at the end of the intervention, where socio-demographic data and the following scales will be collected: The Medical Outcomes Study (MOS), Questionnaire ARMS-e, Everyday Cognition Test (PECC), Scale Yesavage, Test Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), The Functional Independence Measure (FIM), Fragility Index and Lawton y Brody Scale. The present study aims to improve conventional clinical practice on cognitive function training by proposing a specific assessment and intervention of everyday cognition based on the importance of actual cognitive functioning during the resolution of complex tasks of daily life, giving priority to the improvement of autonomy. Abstract:BackgroundThe prevalence of a probable cognitive deficit in older adults is associated with advanced age and degree of functional impairment. This fact has encouraged the search for non-pharmacological preventive interventions. We set out to evaluate the benefits of the use of specific training programs in everyday cognition on the cognitive functioning of older adults. MethodsFor this purpose, we conducted a randomised controlled trial of two groups. In the experimental group we carried out an ‘Everyday Cognition Training Program’, and in the control group we carried out a ‘Traditional Cognitive Training Program’. The study was divided into four phases. The interventions were carried out in 10 associations of older people. In each group, 20 sessions were conducted in each phase. Participants received a total of 80 sessions. Therefore, a total of 800 intervention sessions were conducted throughout the study. The ERFC Questionnaire was used to assess the intervention. Each participant performed eight assessments, two (initial and final) for each of the four stages. ResultsThe study had a final sample of 237 participants. The intervention group had significantly better scores on the ERFC (at P < 0.001) than the control group at both post-intervention and follow-up, except in the third stage of the study, where no significant differences were found after the intervention between the study groups. ConclusionsThe main findings of this study indicate that the use of an Everyday Cognition Training Program presents greater benefits in the cognitive functioning in older adults than the use of a Traditional Cognitive Training Program. Abstract:The ageing population has increased the prevalence of disabling and high-cost diseases, such as dementia and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The latter can be considered a prodromal phase of some dementias and a critical stage for interventions to postpone the impairment of functionality. Working memory (WM) is a pivotal cognitive function, representing the fundamental element of executive functions. This project proposes an intervention protocol to enhance WM in these users, combining cognitive training with transcranial electrical stimulation of alternating current (tACS). This technique has been suggested to enhance the neuronal plasticity needed for cognitive processes involving oscillatory patterns. WM stands to benefit significantly from this approach, given its well-defined electrophysiological oscillations. Therefore, tACS could potentially boost WM in patients with neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract:Background: Multi-component CS programs incorporating practice of activities of daily living (ADL) into intervention have reported benefits for ADL outcomes in individuals living with mild-to-moderate dementia. A randomised controlled trial (RCT) within community occupational therapy services in Ireland, is planned to evaluate the effects of CS-ADL, an ADL-focused, multi-component CS program, on ADL outcomes for individuals living with mild-to-moderate dementia. Method: A single-blind RCT with a calculated sample size of 34 participants has been planned to compare the effects of CS-ADL versus treatment as usual on the outcomes of basic ADLs and instrumental ADLs. Cognition, mood, communication, and quality of life will also be evaluated as secondary outcomes. CS-ADL sessions will run once weekly for a total of seven weeks, lasting approximately two hours each. Outcome data will be collected at baseline, within sessions and post-intervention at week eight. Descriptive statistics will be used to analyse the data. This study has been registered at clinicaltrials.gov (NCT06147479). Discussion: CS programs are commonly conducted by occupational therapists working with individuals living with mild-to-moderate dementia. This study aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of a multi-component CS program delivered through an occupational therapy lens, potentially influencing the approach to CS and ADL interventions undertaken by occupational therapists.

Abstract:Objective: To determine the efficacy of a 12-week individual cognitive stimulation (iCS) intervention on global cognition, memory, and executive function of older adults with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease (AD). Method: Protocolized analysis using data from a multicenter, single-blind, randomized, parallel two-arm RCT of iCS for older adults with probable AD. A sample of 142 people with probable Alzheimer's disease attending 13 Portuguese institutions providing care and support services for older adults were selected. Intervention group ( n = 72) received 24 iCS sessions, twice a week for 12 weeks. Control group ( n = 70) maintained their activities as usual. Outcomes included global cognitive function (Mini-Mental State Examination, and Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale—Cognitive Subscale), memory (Memory Alteration Test, and Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test), and executive functioning (Frontal Assessment Battery). All participants were assessed at baseline (T0), after the intervention (T1), and 12 weeks follow-up (T2). Results: The results showed significant improvements in memory performance at follow-up for the intervention group and greater stability in global cognition in the intervention relative to the control group. Conclusion: The current iCS protocol shows effectiveness in cognitive functioning in older adults with probable AD, particularly for memory upon completion of the intervention and at follow-up, adding further support to previous iCS studies showing similar results and to the effectiveness of the current intervention.

Abstract:Objectives: The aim of this study was to ascertain the influence of a six-month multidomain stimulation program on cognitive functioning. Methods: The sample comprised 25 older adults 60 years-old and older (Mage = 66.08 years), of whom 96% were women and 54% had high education. The intervention program had a duration of six months and was implemented in a group format in one-hour sessions on a weekly basis. Lessons on neuroprotective factors, training in practical compensatory strategies to improve daily performance, cognitive training exercises and recreational cognitive stimulation activities were included. In order to analyze participants' cognitive functioning the following instruments were used: Mini-Mental State Examination, Rey Complex Figure Test, Digit Span Test, Stroop Test, Trail Making Test (Part A and Part B), Verbal Fluency Test, Boston Naming Test (Short Form) and Neuropsi Verbal Memory Subtest. Wilcoxon test was performed to test the impact of the intervention program on participants cognitive functioning. Results: Statistically significant differences were found after the six-month intervention in verbal memory encoding (W= –2.772, p< 0.05), in spontaneous verbal memory retrieval(freerecall) (W= – 3.456, p< 0.001), inverbal recognition memory (W = –3.184, p < 0.001), in spontaneous visual memory retrieval (W = –2.056, p < 0.05), and in naming by visual confrontation (W = –2.521, p < 0.05). In all cases, participants increased their scores after taking part in multicomponent a six-month multidomain stimulationprogram Conclusions: One of the biggest concerns among older people is the loss of cognitive abilities that may occur with ageing. Cognitive stimulation programs, if sufficiently comprehensive, can be a good tool to maintain and improve cognitive functions as we age.

Abstract:Background: It ́s been proved that cognitive stimulation (CS) has direct effects over the improvement of general cognitive functions in people with cognitive impairment (PCI). The restrictions in daily life associated to COVID-19 pandemic had an impact in the quality of life of PCI and it might have affected the efficacy of the CS programs targeting this population. Research Objective: To analyse if there was a moderating effect of the pandemic on the efficacy of CS programs. Method: Participants were enrolled in a public memory clinic; 213 PCI were assigned to two groups: 173 received CS treatment before the pandemic (PRECOVID) and 40 received CS during the pandemic (COVID). Pre and post assessments were carried out with the Mini Mental State Exam (MMSE), the clock-test and the brief Geriatric Depression Scale. The treatment consisted of 32 sessions of CS held twice a week during 4 months. No significant differences (p<.05) were found between groups at baseline in age (74.46±7.80 years), cognitive function (MMSE=23.43±3.30), gender (58% women) and the remaining variables. Preliminary results of the ongoing study: After treatment, both samples improved in depression (t = 4.56, p < .05), the COVID group improved in MMSE (t = -3.40, p < .05) and clock-test (t= -3.78, p < .05), the rest of the changes were not significant. Between group effect sizes favoured the COVID group intervention for MMSE ( d c = 0.74) and the clock test ( d c = 0.48). No between group differences were found for depression ( d c = -0.48). Conclusions: Older people participating of CS during the pandemic benefited more from the treatment than those participating before the pandemic. This apparently contradictory result might be explained by the context of lack of social, emotional and cognitive stimulation associated to the restrictions inherent to social confinement. The continuity of CS care to PCI is essential in the context of generalised restrictions in daily life associated to COVID-19 pandemic and might play an important role in preventing cognitive loss and associated disabilities.

Abstract:Objective: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is considered a pre-stage of dementia. This study aims to develop a cognitive intervention treatment program (CITP) as a non-pharmacological therapy, apply this program into MCI patients, and examine patients’ changes in cognitive function. Methods: Among 16 patients with MCI, 10 patients were randomly assigned to the experimental group and 6 patients were assigned into the control group. The patients assigned to the experimental group participated in the CITP once a week for a period of 15 weeks. The control group were suggested to live a normal daily life without CITP given. After 15 weeks (3 months), pre- and post-investigations, such as cognitive function test, emotional test, brain oxygen saturation test, were conducted and compared for each group. Results: The cognitive function scores and the brain oxygen saturation levels taken during the Verbal Fluency Test showed a statistically significant difference between those of experimental and the control groups. To be specific, while the cognitive function score improved in the experimental group, there was a decline in the control group. There was no statistically significant difference in emotional changes between two groups. Looking at the changes within each group, the overall cognitive function score of the experimental group was significantly increased, but no pre- and post-significantly changes were observed in brain oxygen saturation activation. On the other hand, the control group showed a statistically significant decline in the attention criteria of the cognitive functional areas, and no statistically significant changed in brain activation. Conclusion: The result from this study has given some promising views on maintaining and improving the deteriorating cognitive function in patients with MCI. Conducting CITP on patients is expected to strengthen the neural network. Eventually, there would be a less deterioration of cognitive function and less progression of MCI into dementia.

Abstract:Objective: Investigate the impact of combined computerized cognitive training and occupational therapy on individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Methods: We randomly assigned 118 MCI patients into two groups: a combined intervention group ( n = 37) and a control group ( n = 81), the latter receiving standard nursing care. The intervention group additionally underwent 12 weeks of computerized cognitive training and occupational therapy. Blind assessors evaluated cognitive performance, anxiety, depression, and daily living activities before the intervention, post-intervention, and at a 3-month follow-up. Results: Repeated-measures analysis of variance showed that the sMoCA scores, HAMA scores, and ADL scores of the experimental group at T2 (post-intervention) and T3 (3-month follow-up) were higher than those of the control group, and the difference was statistically significant ( p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p = 0.026). Conclusion: Computerized cognitive training combined with occupational therapy can improve patients' cognitive status, enhance their compliance with continuing care, and maintain their anxiety and self-care ability at a stable level. Abstract:Introduction: Transcranial Direct current stimulation (tDCS) and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) are neuromodulatory techniques capable of modifying the altered cerebral hyperexcitability in amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI). Cortical excitability can be estimated with motor evoked potentials (MEPs) and synaptic plasticity can be induced with a 5 Hz rTMS paradigm applied to the motor cortex (M1). An increase in MEP amplitude reflects a better capacity for plasticity in M1, and these measures can, in turn, be associated with cognitive performance. Cognitive stimulation (CS) and tDCS in aMCI can modify excitability and improve cognition. Objectives: Study the effect of the combination of CS and tDCS (real vs. placebo) on cognitive performance and cortical excitability. Methods: Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial in aMCI. The diagnosis was established through a clinical evaluation by a psychogeriatrician and a neuropsychological assessment. To determine the effect of the interventions, evaluations were conducted at two time points: before (T0) and after administering 9 sessions of CS and 15 sessions of tDCS over three weeks (T1). The evaluations included: MEP amplitude, Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), and Screening for Cognitive Impairment in Psychiatry (SCIP-S). For data analysis, ARTool in RStudio was used to perform aligned rank transformation for non-parametric analysis of variance in factorial models with fixed and random effects, applying a factorial ANOVA for each response variable. Results: A total of 18 participants were enrolled (real n = 8 and placebo n = 10). Comparing T0 and T1, differences were found in both groups in MEP amplitude after applying the paradigm (F = 5.479; p = 0.032) as well as in the total MoCA score (F = 4.808; p = 0.043). When comparing the groups, differences were found in the delayed verbal learning domain assessed with SCIP-S (F = 6.038; p = 0.025) and in MEP amplitude (F = 6.165; p = 0.024). No differences were found in any of the evaluations when studying the effect of the GroupxTimeinteraction. Conclusions: Both groups benefit from cognitive stimulation, and the use of tDCS does not appear to enhance the cognitive effect or the MEPs. It seems that cognitive stimulation alone is capable of modifying cortical excitability and improving cognitive performance.

Abstract:Cytoskeletal proteins are known to sculpt the structural architecture of cells. However, their role as bridges linking the functional crosstalk of different ion channels is unknown. Here, we demonstrate that a small conductance Ca -activated K channels (SK2 channel), present in a variety of cells, where they integrate changes in intracellular Ca concentration [Ca i] with changes in K conductance and membrane potential, associate with L-type Ca channels; Cav1.3 and Cav1.2 through a physical bridge, -actinin2 in cardiac myocytes. SK2 channels do not physically interact with L-type Ca channels, instead, the 2 channels colocalize via their interaction with -actinin2 cytoskeletal protein. The association of SK2 channel with -actinin2 localizes the channel to the entry of external Ca source, which regulate the channel function. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the functions of SK2 channels in atrial myocytes are critically dependent on the normal expression of Cav1.3 Ca 2 channels. Null deletion of Cav1.3 channel results in abnormal function of SK2 channel and prolongation of repolarization and atrial arrhythmias. Our study provides insight into the molecular mechanisms of the coupling of SK2 channel with voltage-gated Ca channel, and represents the first report linking the coupling of 2 different types of ion channels via cytoskeletal proteins. Abstract:Dominant β‐thalassemias exhibit a hybrid phenotype of unstable hemoglobin and ineffective erythropoiesis. Most arise from heterozygous β‐globin gene mutations in exons 3 or 2 and present in adulthood as thalassemia intermedia. We report a novel, de novo β‐globin mutation presenting in a toddler with features of thalassemia major and chromaturia. Hemoglobin Boston–Kuwait is an elongated β‐chain variant (163 amino acids) that results from a frameshift mutation caused by a thymidine insertion in codons 139/140. Abstract:Abstract Background Due to the progressive aging of the population, programs to promote active aging have been recommended. However, older adults have difficulty accessing them. Interventions administered through online video games may increase their accessibility, and complementing these with a smartphone app will likely increase adherence and allow for ongoing professional monitoring. The objective of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of a cognitive-behavioral intervention for active aging administered through an online interactive multimedia video game that includes a smartphone app companion. The secondary objectives are to analyze the moderators and mediators of the change in the outcome variables and to evaluate the adherence to the intervention. Methods/design A randomized controlled clinical trial will be conducted. Adults 45 years and older will be randomly assigned to a cognitive-behavioral intervention administered through an online multimedia video game that includes a smartphone app companion or to a control group that will receive online information on active aging (274 participants per group). The intervention will be administered in eight weekly 45-min modules. An investigator-blinded evaluation will be conducted using online self-administered tests at baseline, post-intervention, and 6- and 12-month follow-ups. The primary outcome will be mental health status as evaluated using the 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) at post-intervention. Secondary outcomes will be emotional well-being, depressive symptoms, reinforcement, negative thoughts, self-reported memory, cognitive task performance, sleep hygiene behaviors, physical activity, eating habits, body mass index, social support, dropout, treatment adherence, and satisfaction with the intervention. Discussion If the results are favorable, this study would involve the development of the first evidence-based active aging promotion intervention based on a video game that includes a smartphone app companion, providing evidence on its efficacy, accessibility, and clinical utility. Abstract:Due to the growing number of older adults with cognitive impairment, it is essential to delay the onset and progression of cognitive decline and promote a healthy lifestyle. The rapid growth of technology has considerably advanced the field of computerized cognitive interventions. Consequently, traditional cognitive interventions are being adapted and new multimedia systems are being developed to encourage health and independent living in old age. The primary objective of this review was to identify cognitive stimulation, training and rehabilitation programs aimed at older people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia. PsycINFO, Medline, CINAHL, Web of Science, PubMed, and CORDIS databases were searched from January 2008 to August 2018. Two researchers reviewed the potential studies individually for eligibility. Studies of computerized cognitive interventions for people with dementia and cognitive impairment were included if they clearly described objectives, users and functioning. A systematic review of the studies was carried out, providing a qualitative synthesis of the features and study characteristics of each software. Nineteen studies met the inclusion criteria, and 11 different cognitive stimulation, training, and rehabilitation programs were identified. The studies found on cognitive intervention software indicate the existence of various technological programs for people with MCI and dementia. On the overall, the programs were aimed at people with different clinical conditions, able to create specific treatments and personalized training, optimized for portable devices, and user-friendly. However, the selected programs differ from each other in terms of objectives, usage mode and characteristics, even if they were used for the same purposes. Therefore, the information obtained in the review may be relevant to distinguish between programs and select the one that best suits each user. Thus, more information about the features and context of use is needed as well as more clinical studies to be able to compare among computerized cognitive programs.

Abstract:Abstract Background Dementia has been presenting an imminent public health challenge worldwide. Studies have shown a combination of cognitive and physical trainings may have synergistic value for improving cognitive functions. Daily functional tasks are innately cognitive demanding and involve components found in common exercise. Individuals with mild cognitive impairment may demonstrate difficulties with complex activities of daily living. Functional tasks could possibly be used as a means of combined cognitive and exercise training for improving cognitive functions. This pilot aims to validate the effects of functional tasks exercise on cognitive functions and functional status in older adults with mild cognitive impairment. Methods A four-arm, rater-blinded randomized controlled trial. Participants ( N = 59) were randomized to either a functional task exercise group, a cognitive training group, an exercise training group, or a waitlist control group for 8 weeks. All outcome measures were undertaken at baseline and post-intervention using Neurobehavioral Cognitive Status Examination, Trail Making Test A and B, Chinese Version Verbal Learning Test, Lawton Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Scale, and Zarit Burden Interview. Results Results of the Kruskal-Wallis one-way ANOVA showed higher improvement in the functional task exercise group with significant between-group differences in memory ( p = 0.009) compared to the exercise group and cognitive training group, functional status ( p = 0.005) compared to the cognitive training group and waitlist control group, and caregiver burden ( p = 0.037) compared to the exercise group and cognitive training group. Conclusion This pilot study showed that functional tasks exercise using simulated functional tasks as a means of combined cognitive and exercise program is feasible and beneficial in improving the memory and functional status of older adults with mild cognitive impairment as well as reducing the care-related burdens of their caregivers. The present findings warrant further well-designed longitudinal studies to examine the sustainability of effects and draw more definitive conclusions. Abstract:(1) Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder marked by cognitive decline and functional impairment. The NeuronUP platform is a computer program whose main function is cognitive stimulation through three types of activities that change so that the user does not manage to learn it. This program provides opportunities to work on various domains, including activities of daily living (ADLs), social skills, and cognitive functions. The main objective of this randomized clinical trial was to assess the impact of integrating the NeuronUP platform with conventional occupational therapy to enhance or maintain cognitive, perceptual, and quality of life (QoL) abilities in people with AD compared to a control group. (2) Methods: A randomized, single-blind clinical trial was conducted. The sample was randomized using a software program, OxMar, which allowed the separation of the sample into a control group (CG) that received their conventional occupational therapy sessions and an experimental group (EG) that received therapy with NeuronUP, in addition to their conventional occupational therapy sessions. An eighteen-week intervention was conducted. (3) Results: The study included 20 participants, and significant differences were observed in most variables analyzed, indicating improvements after the intervention, particularly in measures of QoL and cognitive status. (4) Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate that an eighteen-week experimental protocol, incorporating the NeuronUP platform alongside conventional occupational therapy, led to improvements in cognitive status and QoL in older adults with AD. Thus, integrating the NeuronUP platform as a complementary tool to occupational therapy can be a valuable resource for enhancing the QoL of individuals with AD. However, due to the small sample size, further studies are needed to corroborate these findings.

Abstract:Introduction Early identification of cognitive impairment (CI), including Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD), is a top public health priority. Yet, CI/ADRD is often undetected and underdiagnosed within primary care settings, and in health disparate populations. The MyCog paradigm is an iPad-based, self-administered, validated cognitive assessment based on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Toolbox Cognition Battery and coupled with clinician decision-support tools that is specifically tailored for CI/ADRD detection within diverse, primary care settings. Methods and analysis We will conduct a two-arm, primary care practice-randomised (N=24 practices; 45 257 active patients at the proposed practices), pragmatic trial among geographically diverse Oak Street Health sites to test the effectiveness of the MyCog paradigm to improve early detection CI/ADRD among low socioeconomic, black and Hispanic older adults compared with usual care. Participating practices randomised to the intervention arm will impart the MyCog paradigm as a new standard of care over a 3-year implementation period; as the cognitive component for Annual Wellness Visits and for any patient/informant-reported or healthcare provider-suspected cognitive concern. Rates of detected (cognitive test suggesting impairment) and/or diagnosed (relevant International Classification of Diseases-9/10 [ICD-9/10] code) cognitive deficits, impairments or dementias including ADRD will be our primary outcome of study compared between arms. Secondary outcomes will include ADRD severity (ie, mild or later stage), rates of cognitive-related referrals and rates of family member or caregiver involvement in ADRD care planning. We will use generalised linear mixed models to account for clustered study design. Secondary models will adjust for subject, clinic or visit-specific characteristics. We will use mixed-methods approaches to examine fidelity and cost-effectiveness of the MyCog paradigm. Ethics and dissemination The Institutional Review Board at Advarra has approved the study protocol (Pro00064339). Results will be published in peer-reviewed journals and summaries will be provided to the funders of the study. Trial registration number NCT05607732.

Abstract:BackgroundCognitive decline and dementia represent a key problem for public health as they heavily impair social functioning and independent living. The development of new strategies to support recommendations for patients and their caregivers may represent an outstanding step forward.AimsTo describe the study protocol and methods of “My Mind Project: the effect of cognitive training for elderly” (Grant No. 154/GR-2009-1584108), which investigates, by the use of a multidisciplinary approach, the effects of a comprehensive cognitive training programme on performances in aged subjects with mild–moderate Alzheimer’s disease, mild cognitive impairment and normal cognitive functioning.MethodsThe study is a prospective randomized intervention for the assessment of cognitive training effects in three groups of elderly subjects with different cognitive status. A total of 321 elderly people were enrolled in Marche Region, Italy. Each subject was randomly assigned to an experimental group or to a control group. Cognitive performances and biochemical blood markers have also been analysed before cognitive training (baseline), immediately after termination (follow-up 1), after 6 months (follow-up 2) and after 2 years (follow-up 3).DiscussionThe results will be useful to identify some efficient programmes for the enhancement of cognitive performance in elderly with and without cognitive decline.ConclusionThe application of a non-pharmacological approach in the treatment of elderly with cognitive disorders could have a profound impact on National Health Service.

Abstract:In the marine crop Pyropia yezoensis (Ueda) M. S. Hwang et H. G. Choi, it is known that conchospores from heterozygous conchocelis develop into sectored gametophytic blades (chimeras), but archeospores asexually released from haploid blades do not usually grow into chimeric blades. In this study, chimeras with mosaic pattern consisting of the green and wildtype colors were developed from archeospores that were released from a blade piece containing a cell cluster of green color induced by heavy‐ion beam irradiation. To make clear whether these archeospores were produced from the green‐colored cells or the wildtype‐colored cells, cell clusters of the green mutant, wildtype, and mosaic pattern were cut out from the grown chimera, and archeospores were released from each of the three blade pieces. Archeospores from the green‐mutant blade piece and from the wildtype blade piece developed into only green‐mutant blades and wildtype blades, respectively. In contrast, archeospores from the blade piece with mosaic pattern developed into green‐mutant blades, wildtype blades, and chimeric blades with mosaic pattern of the two colors, although the frequency of the chimeras was low. Because each gametophytic cell possesses a single plastid, it is difficult to explain the occurrence of the new chimeras as a mutation of the plastid DNA. Thus, the new chimeras are considered to be due to transposable elements in Pyropia.
