Abstract:Statement of problem: Multiple factors can influence the accuracy of intraoral scanners (IOSs). However, the impact of scan extension and starting quadrant on the accuracy of IOSs for fabricating tooth-supported crowns remains uncertain. Purpose: The purpose of the present in vitro study was to measure the influence of scan extension (half or complete arch scan) and the starting quadrant (same quadrant or contralateral quadrant of the location of the crown preparation) on the accuracy of four IOSs. Material and methods: A typodont with a crown preparation on the left first molar was digitized (T710) to obtain a reference scan. Four scanner groups were created: TRIOS 5, PrimeScan, i700, and iTero. Then, 3 subgroups were defined based on the scan extension and starting quadrant: half arch (HA subgroup), complete arch scan starting on the left quadrant (CA-same subgroup), and complete arch scan starting on the right quadrant (CA-contralateral subgroup), (n=15). The reference scan was used as a control to measure the root mean square (RMS) error discrepancies with each experimental scan on the tooth preparation, margin of the tooth preparation, and adjacent tooth areas. Two-way ANOVA and pairwise multiple comparisons were used to analyze trueness (α=.05). The Levene and pairwise comparisons using the Wilcoxon Rank sum tests were used to analyze precision (α=.05). Results: For the tooth preparation analysis, significant trueness and precision differences were found among the groups (P<.001) and subgroups (P<.001), with a significant interaction group×subgroup (P=.002). The iTero and TRIOS5 groups obtained better trueness than the PrimeScan and i700 groups (P<.001). Moreover, half arch scans obtained the best trueness, while the CA-contralateral scans obtained the worst trueness (P<.001). The iTero group showed the worst precision among the IOSs tested. For the margin of the tooth preparation evaluation, significant trueness and precision differences were found among the groups (P<.001) and subgroups (P<.001), with a significant interaction group×subgroup (P=.005). The iTero group obtained best trueness (P<.001), but the worst precision (P<.001) among the IOSs tested. Half arch scans obtained the best trueness and precision values. For the adjacent tooth analysis, trueness and precision differences were found among the groups (P<.001) and subgroups tested (P<.001), with a significant interaction group×subgroup (P=.005). The TRIOS 5 obtained the best trueness and precision. Half arch scans obtained the best accuracy. Conclusions: Scan extension and the starting quadrant impacted the scanning trueness and precision of the IOSs tested. Additionally, the IOSs showed varying scanning discrepancies depending on the scanning area assessed. Half arch scans presented the highest trueness and precision, and the complete arch scans in which the scan started in the contralateral quadrant of where the crown preparation was obtained the worst trueness and precision.
The impact of mandibular partial edentulous distal extension on virtual occlusal record accuracy when using two different intraoral scanners: An in vitro analysis

Abstract:Objectives: This in vitro study was formulated to clarify how mandibular partial edentulous distal extension involving three missing teeth affects the virtual occlusal record (VOR) accuracy, in terms of both trueness and precision, when using two different intraoral scanners (IOSs) - the Primescan (PS) and Trios 4 (TR) scanners. Methods: A typodont model missing the left mandibular second premolar, first molar, and second molar as well as the right mandibular first molar was mounted on a semi-adjustable articulator. Four implants were placed at the sites of the missing mandibular teeth. Six pairs of stainless steel markers (diameter: 0.5 mm) were affixed to the maxillary and mandibular casts in the buccal gingiva adjacent to the implants and on the facial surfaces of teeth as reference positions for measurements. The model was digitized with an inEox X5 laboratory scanner to create a reference dataset. Intraoral scans were performed with the PS and TR scanners, with each scan duplicated 10 times to generate 20 paired IOS files. Automatic VOR generation followed the bilateral buccal scan protocol, divided into PS and TR groups (n = 10). Six subgroups of linear distances between interarch markers were assessed with Geomagic Control software, comparing deviations from the reference scan. Data normality was confirmed with the Shapiro-Wilk test. Trueness was evaluated with two-way ANOVAs and pairwise comparisons performed with Tukey's test, whereas precision was assessed with the Levene test (α=0.05). Results: The mean linear deviation (Δd) and standard deviation (SD) of VOR were both significantly affected by marker position (P < 0.001), and a significant position × scanner interaction was detected (P < 0.001). Negative mean deviations were observed for the distally extended edentulous areas in both groups. PS scans exhibited trueness that was significantly better than that for TR scans in the D16-46, D13-43, D23-33, and D27-37 subgroups (P < 0.05), whereas there were no significant differences in the D25-35 or D26-36 subgroups. PS scanning was associated with significantly better precision than TR scanning (P < 0.001), and worse precision was observed at D27-37 for both tested IOSs. Conclusions: Mandibular partial edentulous distal extension can significantly affect VOR accuracy. The type of IOS could also affect VOR accuracy depending on the area being scanned, with better overall performance observed for the Primescan device as compared to the Trios 4 scanner. Both of these IOSs tended to underestimate VOR occlusal dimensions in mandibular distally extended edentulous areas. Clinical significance: Mandibular distal edentulous areas can contribute to occlusal dimensions that are underestimated in digital workflows, which may result in infraocclusal discrepancies that arise when performing restorations. IOSs and VOR scanning protocols should thus be carefully considered in order to minimize these risks.

Abstract:The polypeptides soluble in 0.25 M-HCl were extracted from the nuclei of BHK cells infected with herpes simplex virus type 1 or type 2 and separated by SDS-PAGE. Seventeen polypeptides were detectable in each extract of which 10 type 1 and nine type 2 polypeptides were reproducibly effectively extracted. In cells infected with bovine mammillitis virus, pseudorabies virus or equine herpesvirus type 1, at least 12, 13 and eight polypeptides respectively were acid-soluble. In addition to histones, three other cellular polypeptides were present in sizeable quantities in the acid extracts and could obscure other acid-soluble viral polypeptides. Possible relationships between some polypeptides of the five herpesviruses are discussed.
Evaluation of the trueness of intraoral scanning for partial edentulous patients with maxillary defect

Abstract:Abstract Objectives. The trueness of intraoral scanning (IOS) for partial edentulous patients with maxillary defect has not been investigated sufficiently. This study aimed to evaluate trueness of digital dental impressions obtained by IOS for partial edentulous patients with maxillary defect by quantitatively comparing liner distance and best-fit algorithm measurement with model scanning. Materials and Methods. Three ceramic blocks were pasted on healthy palate mucosa using medical tissue glue in 10 subjects. Digital dental impressions were scanned by IOS and imported into the software. Plaster dental impressions obtained by silicone rubber were also taken and scanned. Linear distance and best-fit algorithm measurement were performed using model scanning as the reference. To examine linear distance, Paired t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were applied. The best-fit algorithm measurement of dentition was evaluated with Kolmogorov–Smirnoff test. The level of significance was set to α = .05. Results. Paired t-test showed no difference between IOS and model scanning for liner distance in group A and C, while for group B, significant differences were observed (P < 0.05). Results of ANOVA indicated differences among groups (P < 0.05). For best-fit algorithm measurement, Kolmogorov–Smirnoff test showed no significant difference between IOS and model scanning (P = 0.18). Conclusion. IOS demonstrated satisfactory results in trueness of digital dental impressions for partial edentulous patients with maxillary defect, while functional impressions were needed in defect or flap areas to better meet clinical requirements. Clinical Relevance. The feasibility of digital dental impressions for partially edentulous patients with maxillary defect using IOS was illustrated in this study, which provided references for clinical treatment.

Abstract:Objectives The objective of this study was to use in vitro models to examine the bite registration accuracy of four different intraoral scanners (IOS) for edentulous maxillary and mandibular arches. The objective was to assess the trueness and precision of the IOS and determine if there were significant differences between them. Methods An Asiga Max UV 3D printer was used to print maxillary and mandibular edentulous models based on the shape of Frasaco models (artificial dental arch models). Four dental implants were placed symmetrically in both models using Straumann BLT RC implants. Digital impressions were taken with Primescan, Trios 3, Trios 4, and Medit i500 intraoral scanners (n = 10 for each IOS). Digital bite registrations were made, and scanning data was exported in STL format. The accuracy of the interarch distance (the distance between the metrological spheres attached to the mandibular and maxillary models) was estimated for each IOS. Results The results showed significant differences in trueness and precision between different IOS (p .05). Primescan provided the most accurate results, followed by Medit i500, Trios 3, and Trios 4, respectively. Conclusions within the limitations of this study, the IOS type affects the accuracy of interocclusal bite registration in in vitro design. Only Primescan achieved clinically acceptable accuracy for the interocclusal recording of edentulous arches. Clinical Relevance The comparison of the accuracy of bite registration between different intraoral scanners will help increase the efficiency of the clinical application of digitalized interarch registration.

Abstract:Statement of problem Current methods for assessing the accuracy of intraoral scanners (IOSs) that reduce errors and provide comprehensive data compared with previous methods are lacking. Purpose The purpose of this in vitro study was to present a coordinate-based data analysis method to compare the accuracy of 5 IOSs for scanning completely dentate and partially edentulous casts. Material and methods Reference scans of 2 complete arch casts (completely and partially dentate) were digitized using a high-precision laboratory scanner (Ceramill Map 600). Each cast was scanned 10 times each using 5 IOSs (3Shape TRIOS 3, Planmeca Emerald, iTero Element 5D, Medit i500, and Shining Aoralscan 3). The dataset of all 10 test groups was analyzed by using a reverse engineering software program (Geomagic Wrap). Each test cast was aligned with the reference cast by 3-dimensional (3D) superimposition to determine the translation and rotation along the x-, y-, and z-axes. The dataset was analyzed using the Kruskal–Wallis and post hoc Bonferroni tests (α=.05). Results Significant differences were observed in all parameters among all scanners when scanning the same cast ( P <.05). Significant differences were observed in at least 1 parameter for all scanners, except Element 5D after scanning different casts using the same scanner. Deviations in the test data generally relocated toward the mesial, buccal, and apical sides, and the casts were almost always rotated clockwise around the y-axis and counterclockwise around the z-axis. For the completely dentate cast, among all IOSs, Element 5D demonstrated the highest accuracy in most of the measured parameters, specifically in the y-axis translation (0.06[0.07] mm), z-axis translation (0.08[0.05] mm), and y-axis rotation (0.21[0.16] degree) ( P <.05). For the partially edentulous cast, Element 5D displayed higher accuracy in most of the measured parameters, including the x-axis translation (0.11[0.14] mm) and z-axis rotation (0.12[0.18] degree) ( P <.05). Emerald also displayed higher accuracy in most of the measured parameters, including the y-axis translation (0.05[0.08] mm) and y-axis rotation (0.14[0.12] degree) ( P <.05). Element 5D exhibited no difference in the scanning accuracy between the 2 types of casts ( P >.05). Conclusions Element 5D offered a high level of accuracy and was an appropriate scanner for both situations. The method presented in this study provides a good assessment of accuracy deviations in complete arch scans using 3D coordinate-based data analysis.

Abstract:Objectives To evaluate the accuracy of conventional polyether impressions and digital scans produced by five intra-oral scanners (IOSs) in maxillary free-ended partial edentulism for long-span implant-supported prostheses. Methods This in vitro study involved the impression of a maxillary model with free-end partial edentulism, in which six implants were placed before digitization using a desktop scanner to generate a digital reference model. Conventional impressions (Impregum Penta Soft, 3M) and digital scans with five IOSs (Trios 3 and 4, 3Shape; Primescan, Dentsply-Sirona; CS 3600, Carestream Dental; and i-500, Medit) were obtained. Conventional impressions were digitized using the same desktop scanner. Each digital STL file of conventional or digital impressions was superimposed over the reference STL file to enable comparison. Trueness was assessed by calculating angles and distance deviations. For precision, dispersions of values around their means were also measured. Results The mean distance deviation was significantly higher for conventional impressions (454.24 ± 334.70 μm) than for IOSs (ranging from 160.98 ± 204.48 μm to 255.56 ± 395.89 μm) ( p < 0.001). The mean angular deviation was high with conventional impressions (1.82 ± 1.51°), intermediate with CS 3600 (1.38 ± 1.42°), Primescan (1.37 ± 2.54°) and Trios 4 (1.30 ± 0.64°) scanners, and lower with I500 (0.97 ± 0.75°) and Trios 3 (1.01 ± 0.85°) scanners ( p < 0.001). The dispersion of distance values around their means was lowest with Trios 3 and i-500, followed by CS3600, Primescan, and Trios 4, respectively, and higher for conventional impressions ( p < 0.001). The dispersion of angular values was smallest with i-500, Trios 3, and Trios 4 compared with other groups and was highest with Primescan ( p < 0.001). Conclusions Within the limits of the current study, Trios 3 scanner exhibited the highest accuracy, followed by i-500, Trios 4, CS 3600, Primescan, and conventional impressions respectively. IOSs might be reliable for the fabrication of an implant-supported prosthesis. In vivo studies are required to confirm these findings. Clinical significance Passive adaptation of the implant-supported framework is a challenge when rehabilitating patients with maxillary free-end partial edentulism. While Conventional impressions remain a reliable and validated technique, but IOSs demonstrated higher accuracy, suitable for the fabrication of long-span implant-supported prostheses in partially edentulous arch.

[Accuracy of Intercuspal Occlusion in 3D Reconstruction with the Dental Articulator Position Method].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction accuracy of the intercuspal occlusion (ICO) of the dental casts, by the dental articulator position method, and provide a reference for clinical application.METHODS:The standard dental casts in ICO were mounted on average values articulator, and five pairs of milling resin cylinders were respectively attached to the base of both the casts. 100 μm articulating paper and occlusal record silicone rubber were used to detect the occlusal contact number between the posterior teeth of casts mounted on articulator in ICO. The occlusal contact numbers NA detected by the two methods were calculated simultaneously, as the reference. After the upper and lower casts were scanned separately, and the buccal data of casts in ICO were scanned with the aid of the dental articulator position, registration was carried out utilizing the registration software. Then the digital casts mounted in ICO as well as the buccal occlusal data were saved in standard tessellation language (STL) format. Geomagic Studio 2013 software was used to analyze the contact number NS between digital upper and lower casts by the "deviation analysis" function. The differences were compared between NS and NA, to evaluate the sensitivity and positive predict value (PPV) of the model scanner to reproduce the occlusal contact with the aid of dental articulator position. The distance DR between the centers of the circles at the top surface of the upper and lower corresponding cylinders was obtained by the three-coordinate measuring system Faro Edge, as the reference value. The Geomagic Studio 2013 software was used to construct the cylinders of digital casts and the distance DM between the centers of the circles at the top surface of the corresponding cylinders were measured, as the test value. The one-sample T test was used to analyze the variable differences between DM and DR.RESULTS:The PPV of reproducing the occlusal contact point was 0.76 and sensitivity was 0.81. The distance error of the opposite cylinder was (0.232±0.089) mm. There was no statistical difference between the feature points 5-5', while there were statistical differences between the other feature points.CONCLUSION:By the dental articulator position method, the model scanner reproduces the occlusal contact point with high sensitivity and PPV, and that meets clinical needs. Meanwhile, the distance between the feature points is greater than the reference value, which will lead to occlusal disturbance, and require clinical grinding.
Trueness and precision of an intraoral scanner on abutments with subgingival vertical margins: An in vitro study

Abstract:Objectives This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of an intraoral scanner (IOS - Medit i700) on tooth abutments with vertical preparations at 2 depths below the free gingival margin, and to determine if the IOS can reproduce the area beyond the finish surface of the tested preparation geometry. Methods Two abutments for a maxillary first molar were designed by means of CAD software, with vertical preparations set at 1 and 2 mm below the gingiva. These abutments were subsequently printed in resin and placed on a reference model. The reference files consisted of scans made using a metrological machine on these abutments. Ten scans were made with the tested IOS on each sample, resulting in two study groups. The scans from the experimental groups were labeled "V-1" for vertical preparation at 1 mm below the gingival margin and "V-2" for 2 mm below. The analysis of these scans was performed using Geomagic Control X (3D SYSTEMS) to assess their trueness and precision in μm. Descriptive statistics with a 95% confidence interval were employed, alongside independent sample tests, to ascertain any differences between the groups (α=.05). Results Statistically significant differences were not found both for trueness (p=.104) and precision (p=.409), between the tested geometries. The mean values for trueness were V-1=37.5[31.4-43.6]; V-2=32.6[30.6-34.6]. About the precision, the mean values were V-1=20.5[8.4-32.5]; V-2=18.4[8.2-28.5]. In both the study groups, it was possible to detect the surface beyond the finish area. Conclusions Within the limitations of this study, vertical preparation design allows for registration of the tooth anatomy beyond the finish area with IOS. Moreover, the mean accuracy values were clinically acceptable at both 1 and 2 mm below the gingival margin.

Accuracy of Intraoral Scanning of Edentulous Jaws with and Without Resin Markers.

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the accuracy of digital models obtained from intraoral scanning of edentulous maxilla and mandible models with and without resin markers. Methods: A pair of standard edentulous models were scanned using a laboratory scanner and saved as reference models. The edentulous models were fixed onto a phantom head and scanned with an intraoral scanner (IOS) five times each. Six resin markers were attached on the maxilla model and two on the mandible model, and another five intraoral scans were taken of each model. The scanning time and number of images were recorded. The digital models obtained using the IOS were superimposed on the reference models using image processing software. The trueness and precision of the models made using the IOS were evaluated, and the scanning time and number of images were also compared. Results: The average trueness and precision of the IOS in the maxilla model with resin markers were 135.50 ± 36.28 μm and 254.55 ± 40.62 μm, respectively, while those in the mandible were 161.40 ± 55.45 μm and 368.75 ± 91.03 μm, respectively. Placing resin markers on the edentulous maxilla and mandible did not improve the trueness of the IOS, but placing resin markers on the edentulous maxilla improved the precision and scanning efficiency. However, placing resin markers on the buccal shelf of the edentulous mandible decreased the precision and increased the scanning time. Conclusion: Resin markers placed on the hard palate of edentulous maxillae could improve the precision of the IOS and improve scanning efficiency. However, they did not affect the trueness of the IOS for edentulous maxillae or mandibles..
Fully digital occlusion planning in orthognathic surgery - A crossover study

Abstract:Orthognathic surgery enables patients with severe jaw malocclusions to normalise their chewing function and, as such, to improve their quality of life. Over the last few years, digitalisation has been set in motion by intraoral scanners and the improvement of planning software in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Previous studies based on plaster cast models showed that the virtual occlusion based on digitally scanned models can be comparable to conventional methods. This retrospective crossover study aimed to prove that the virtual occlusion finding with the IPS CaseDesigner® (version 2.3.5.2, KLS Martin, Tuttlingen, Germany) is accurate enough to use intraoral scans exclusively. Materials and methods: A total of 23 orthognathic surgery patients receiving an intraoral scan for their treatment were included in this study. Two experienced maxillofacial surgeons haptically performed the occlusion finding on three-dimensional (3D) stereolithographic models using the fully digital pathway. One surgeon repeated the procedure a second time to evaluate intra-observer variability. The study aimed to show the difference between these two planning methods by upholding the surgical accuracy of less than 2 mm in translation and 2° in rotation. The conventional haptic occlusion was set as a reference throughout the whole study. The data were tested with a one-sample Wilcoxon test for the fit into the surgical accuracy. Results: The difference between the virtual and conventional groups was significantly smaller than the surgical accuracy (all p < 0.001). Both translational movements (anterior/posterior (median 0.51 mm [0.28, 0.88]), left/right (median 0.46 mm [0.20, 0.87]), cranial/caudal (median 0.37 mm [0.11, 0.69])) and rotations (Roll (median 0.71° [0.29, 1.35]), Pitch (median 0.72° [0.29, 1.44]), Yaw (median 1.09° [0.33, 1.60])) were in the range of surgical accuracy (2 mm/2°). The most significant differences were found in the anterior/posterior translation (median 0.51 mm [0.28, 0.88]) and the Yaw rotation (median 1.09° [0.33, 1.60]). Conclusion: These results demonstrate that the entirely virtual workflow in orthognathic surgery, including intraoral scanning and the virtual semi-automatic occlusion finding, represents a reliable and state-of-the-art alternative to the conventional haptic method.
Do intraoral scanning technologies affect the trueness of dental arches with crowding, diastema, and edentulous spaces? A clinical perspective

Abstract:Objectives: To evaluate the trueness of dental arches digitised by two intraoral scanning (IOS) technologies from patients presenting crowding, diastema, and bilateral posterior edentulous space with tilted molar. Methods: Conventional impressions and dental stone models were generated from three patients presenting the aforementioned dental arch conditions. These models were digitised on a desktop scanner, and the resulting mesh was used as reference. Subsequently, the patients were scanned using confocal based (CF; iTero Element 2) and blue laser-multiscan (BLM; Virtuo Vivo) imaging IOS technology, totalling thirty scans. The meshes from the scans were exported in Standard Tessellation Language format and analysed using Geomagic Control X software. Root mean square (RMS) indicated deviation magnitude. Differences in IOS technologies were evaluated with paired t-tests, and dental arch conditions compared using ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey tests (α=0.05). Results: Digital dental arch from blue laser-multiscan technology showed lower trueness compared to confocal based technology for crowding (p = 0.0084) and edentulous spaces (p = 0.0025) conditions. When the types of oral condition were compared, discrepancies were significantly different for both IOS technologies, featuring the arch with diastema showing the lowest trueness, followed by edentulous spaces and crowding. Conclusion: Dental arches presenting crowding and edentulous spaces digitised by blue laser-multiscan technology exhibited greater discrepancies compared to confocal based imaging technology. Furthermore, trueness varied among the dental arch conditions. Clinical significance: The IOS technology and patient's dental arch condition can influence the trueness of dental arch digitisation. Being aware of these effects allows clinicians to take them into account during scanning procedures, digital planning and manufacturing.

Abstract:Objective: To establish a standard method to evaluate the scanning accuracy of intraoral scanner (IOS) and to investigate six IOS's scanning accuracy and the relationship between different scan span. Methods: Five simplified six abutments full arch model were fabricated by high accuracy (5 μm) milling machine with 7075 aluminum alloy. The machining accuracy, which was verified by a coordinate measuring machine with higher accuracy (0.7 μm), was considered as the reference accuracy. The model with the highest machining accuracy was considered as the test model in IOS's scanning accuracy test, and computer-aided design (CAD) data of the model was used as the reference data. Six IOS scanned the test model 10 times with the same scanning path, obtained 60 test data. CAD data and test data were input into Geomagic Studio 2014. The preparation part above the margin of the abutments of the data was isolated and divided into 4 segments of interest: single crown, three-unit bridge, five-unit bridge, and full arch. The test data were then best-fit aligned to CAD data or each other followed by deviation analysis. Scanning trueness and precision were then calculated. Results: The mid-value of scanning trueness and precision of six IOS in single crown, three-unit bridge, five-unit bridge and full arch were 13.3-29.6 μm and 7.6-20.7 μm, 15.4-30.9 μm and 8.7-26.5 μm, 17.0-66.1 μm and 11.3-44.2 μm, 24.0-107.9 μm and 24.6-150.1 μm respectively. Conclusions: Long-span scanning can affect the accuracy of IOS to a varying extent.

Abstract:Background: Advances in digital technology and intraoral scanners (IOSs) have the potential to enable accurate digital impressions for patients with maxillary defects. This study aimed to compare the accuracy of IOSs in completely and partially edentulous models with maxillary defects. Methods: Three polyurethane models—one completely edentulous (CE) and two partially edentulous, following Aramany classifications I (ACI) and II (ACII)—were created using stereolithography. These models were scanned with a desktop scanner to create reference models. Ten scans were performed using three different intraoral scanners (TRIOS 3, Primescan, and Virtuo Vivo). The IOS datasets were analyzed to assess trueness and precision using a two-way ANOVA and multiple-comparison tests with Bonferroni corrections (α = 0.05). Results: Both the model type and the IOS significantly influenced trueness and precision. The interaction between the model type and the IOS was found to be statistically significant (trueness: p = 0.001; precision: p = 0.005). The highest trueness was observed in the ACII model scanned with TRIOS 3 and Primescan. TRIOS 3 and Primescan also exhibited the highest precision in the ACII model. For Virtuo Vivo, there were no significant differences among the models (p = 0.48). Conclusions: Although intraoral scanners (IOSs) demonstrated significant differences in trueness when used in completely and partially edentulous models with maxillary defects, these differences may be considered clinically insignificant.

Abstract:This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of digital dental impressions obtained by intraoral scanning (IOS) for partial edentulous patients with maxillary defects by comparing them with conventional impression techniques. Ten subjects underwent an experimental procedure where three ceramic blocks were affixed to the healthy palate mucosa. Digital dental impressions were captured using IOS and subsequently imported into software. Conventional impressions obtained by silicone rubber were also taken and scanned. Linear distance and best-fit algorithm measurements were performed using conventional impression techniques as the reference. Twenty impressions were analyzed, which included 30 pairs of linear distances and 10 best-fit algorithm measurements. Regarding linear distance, paired two-sample t-test demonstrated no significant differences between IOS and model scanning in groups A and C, whereas significant differences were found in group B (P < 0.05). Additionally, ANOVA revealed significant differences among the groups (P < 0.05). No significant differences were found for the best-fit algorithm measurement of the dentition. IOS can provide accurate impressions for partial edentulous patients with maxillary defects and its accuracy was found to be comparable with conventional impression techniques. A functional impression may be needed to ensure accurate reproduction of soft and hard tissues in defect or flap areas.

Abstract:Objective Digital technology in dentistry has advanced rapidly in recent years, and as a result, the identification of static virtual articulation as a crucial stage in the digital process has attracted increasing attention. The use of intraoral scanners (IOSs) has made the acquisition of occlusal records more efficient. The purpose of this article is to review information on evaluation methods and influencing factors on the accuracy of static virtual articulation obtained by intraoral scanners. Overview An electronic search of the published literature was performed up to November 2023 using five databases: PubMed, Cochrane, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus. The inclusion criteria were defined as relevant clinical or in vitro English studies on the accuracy of the occlusal relationship obtained using intraoral scanners. Therefore, a total of 30 articles were selected, reviewed, and discussed. Based on the results of the literature review, three methods have been used to evaluate the accuracy of virtual interocclusal records, including distance measurement (10 studies), occlusal contact analysis (13 studies), and deviation analysis after superimposing casts (8 studies). However, direct comparisons between these studies are challenging due to the different methods employed. Factors that were found to potentially impact accuracies, such as the range of vestibular scans, the number and position of virtual interocclusal records (VIRs), the location and extension of edentulous areas, alignment methods, and evaluation software programs have been extensively studied, but the extent to which these factors affect accuracy remains uncertain and varies depending on the specific circumstances. Conclusions A combination of multiple evaluation methods for a more rigid assessment of virtual interocclusal records may be a better approach. Attention should be given to the factors that may influence the accuracy of virtual interocclusal records. Future research should focus on optimizing these factors to improve the clinical applicability of virtual interocclusal records. Clinical Significance In restorative dentistry, virtual interocclusal records obtained with intraoral scanners have been successfully used with acceptable accuracy, although they present some issues. Understanding the evaluation methods for virtual interocclusal records and the factors that may affect the accuracy of VIRs may lead to better use in clinical practice.

Abstract:Statement of problem Different digital methods have been described for transferring the maxillary cast into a virtual articulator; however, its accuracy remains uncertain. Purpose The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the accuracy of the maxillary cast transfer into the virtual semi-adjustable articulator by using analog and digital methods. Material and methods A maxillary typodont with 5 markers was positioned into a mannequin, which was digitized by using an industrial scanner (ATOS Q) and an extraoral scan of the typodont obtained (T710). Three groups were created based on the technique used to transfer the maxillary cast into the virtual articulator (Panadent PCH Articulator): conventional facebow record (CNV group), digital photograph (P group), and facial scanning (FS group) (n=10). In the CNV group, conventional facebow records (Kois Dentofacial analyzer system) were digitized (T710) and used to mount the maxillary scan into the articulator by aligning it with the reference platform (Kois adjustable platform) (DentalCAD). In the P group, photographs with the reference glasses (Kois Reference Glasses 3.0) were positioned in the mannequin. Each photograph was superimposed with the maxillary scan. Then, the maxillary scan was transferred into the virtual articulator by using the true horizontal plane information of the photograph. In the FS group, facial scans with an extraoral scan body (Kois Scan Body) were positioned in the mannequin by using a facial scanner (Instarisa). The extraoral scan body was digitized by using the same extraoral scanner. The digitized extraoral scan body provided the true horizontal plane information that was used to mount the maxillary scan into the articulator, along with the Kois disposable tray of the scan body. On the reference scan and each specimen, 15 linear measurements between the markers of the maxillary scans and the horizontal plane of the virtual articulator and 3 linear measurements between the maxillary dental midline and articulator midline were calculated. The measurements of the reference scan were used as a control to assess trueness and precision. Trueness was analyzed by using 1-way ANOVA followed by the pairwise comparison Tukey tests (α=.05). Precision was evaluated by using the Levene and pairwise comparisons Wilcoxon Rank sum tests. Results No significant trueness ( P =.996) or precision ( P =.430) midline discrepancies were found. Significant posterior right ( P <.001), anterior ( P =.005), posterior left ( P <.001), and overall ( P <.001) trueness discrepancies were revealed among the groups. The P group obtained the best posterior right, posterior left, and overall trueness and precision. The P and FS groups demonstrated the best anterior trueness, but no anterior precision discrepancies were found. Conclusions The techniques tested affected the accuracy of the maxillary cast transfer into the virtual semi-adjustable articulator. In the majority of the parameters assessed, the photography method tested showed the best trueness and precision values. However, the maxillary cast transfer accuracy ranged from 137 ±44 μm to 453 ±176 μm among the techniques tested.
