Abstract:We present two new two-dimensional potential-energy surfaces for the SO-He system calculated at SO r distance frozen at its experimental minimum-energy distance. Both are obtained at the RCCSD(T) level using two different basis sets (AVTZ and AVQZ) for the three atoms. Bond functions are placed at mid-distance between the SO center of mass and He for a better description of the van der Waals well. Close-coupling calculations of the collisional excitation cross sections of the fine-structure levels of SO by He are calculated at low energies. The exact level splitting is taken into account. It is found that the results obtained from the two surfaces are very similar, except for some small differences observed in the region of resonances at low energies. The propensity rules between fine-structure levels are studied, it is shown that F-conserving cross sections are much larger for high-N rotational levels than cross sections between F-changing levels, as expected from theoretical considerations. The use of infinite order sudden recoupling techniques from spin-free cross sections is investigated. Excitation rate coefficients among fine-structure levels are calculated at low temperatures.

Abstract:Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) Tat-mediated trans-activation requires the structural integrity of TAR RNA and the cooperative interaction of human host cell proteins. The TAR domain, minimally required for tat response, includes the Tat binding pyrimidine bulge, the TAR RNA upper stem, and the loop sequences. However, little is known about the significance of the 5'-stem structure of TAR in the regulation of viral growth. We designed viral mutations, specifically in the TAR RNA lower stem structure, and studied their effects on the kinetics of viral growth in T-lymphocyte cell lines and in activated human peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Mutations that destabilized the lower TAR stem structure inhibited viral growth to various degrees in different CD4+ T-cells. These results suggest that the structural integrity of the lower stem structure of TAR plays an important role in viral growth, presumably by binding to specific host cell proteins that stabilize Tat-TAR interactions.
The Impact of Bank Health on the Investment of Its Corporate Borrowers

Abstract:This paper investigates the impact of changes in a bank’s health on the investment behavior of its current borrowers for a panel of U.S. firms. I find that, after controlling for aggregate credit availability and the condition of outside banks, firms reduce their investment when the health of their primary bank deteriorates. Specifically, a 2% increase in the loan nonperformance of a commercial bank leads to an 8 to 10% decrease in average investment for firms which maintain a primary borrowing relationship with the bank. This effect is only present while the firm maintains a borrowing relationship with the bank and does not appear to be driven by changes in region or industry specific investment opportunities. The health of the existing lender is more important for younger, more opaque firms with greater reliance on their primary bank. Ia lso fi nd that this ef fect became less signif icant after the early 1990s, suggesting that bank dependence appears to diminish during long periods of stability. However, results from the recent financial crisis show that healthy banking relationships remain very important to U.S. firm investment.
