Abstract:Brain-computer interface (BCI) was a communication system that did not depend on the brain' s normal output pathways of the peripheral nerves and muscles. BCI provided a new communication channel for the patients with severe neuromuscular disorders, and also had potential values in virtual reality, entertainment and aviation. Recently, BCI developed rapidly, and its researches mostly concentrated on feature extraction and translation algorithm. Cortical evoked potentials such as steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) and P300 were widely applied in BCI because of simple feature extraction and requiring little training. The progress in SSVEP-based and P300-based BCI was reviewed, and its experimental paradigms and limitations were analyzed in this paper.

Abstract:Brain-computer interface(BCI)is a communication system that does not depend on the brain's normal output pathways of the peripheral nerves and muscles,and has developed rapidly in recent years.BCI provides a new communication channel for the patients with severe neuromuscular disorders,and also promises potential values in virtual reality,entertainment and airspace industries.Currently,BCI inputs use different electrophysiological signals,including P300,steady-state visual evoked potential(SSVEP),slow cortical potential(SCP)and/rhythms.Spontaneous EEG signals such as SCP and/rhythm are applied in BCI widely because they do not depend on additional inputs,or produce visual fatigue,or lead to adaptation,and their neurophysiological basis has been studied extensively.However,BCI based on spontaneous EEG has some obvious limitations.For example,some users do not know how to control/rhythm,and some others need to undergo a long period of training to use SCP-based BCI.

Abstract:The derivative N alpha-fluorenylmethoxy-carbonyl-O-dimethylphosphono-L-tyrosi ne was utilized in continuous-flow solid-phase synthesis to prepare the O-phosphotyrosine analogue of human angiotensin II, [Tyr(P)4] angiotensin II. Side-chain deprotection, including the removal of the methyl phosphate groups, as well as cleavage of the peptide from the solid support was achieved with 1 M trimethylsilyl-bromide-thioanisole in trifluoroacetic acid. Overall yield of purified peptide was 46%. The pressor response in intact sheep to graded infusions of the synthetic [Tyr(P)4] angiotensin II showed it to have similar potency to the native angiotensin II. However, a prolonged, elevated mean arterial pressure was observed following cessation of the infusion.

Abstract:Brain-computer interface (BCI) is a revolutionizing human-computer interaction with potential applications in both medical and non-medical fields, emerging as a cutting-edge and trending research direction. Increasing numbers of groups are engaging in BCI research and development. However, in recent years, there has been some confusion regarding BCI, including misleading and hyped propaganda about BCI, and even non-BCI technologies being labeled as BCI. Therefore, a clear definition and a definite scope for BCI are thoroughly considered and discussed in the paper, based on the existing definitions of BCI, including the six key or essential components of BCI. In the review, different from previous definitions of BCI, BCI paradigms and neural coding are explicitly included in the clear definition of BCI provided, and the BCI user (the brain) is clearly identified as a key component of the BCI system. Different people may have different viewpoints on the definition and scope of BCI, as well as some related issues, which are discussed in the article. This review argues that a clear definition and definite scope of BCI will benefit future research and commercial applications. It is hoped that this review will reduce some of the confusion surrounding BCI and promote sustainable development in this field.

Abstract:Neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease, stroke, and spinal cord injury can result in impairments of motor function, consciousness, cognition, and sensory processing. Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) technology, which facilitates direct communication between the brain and external devices, emerges as an innovative key to unlocking neurological conditions, demonstrating significant promise in this context. This comprehensive review uniquely synthesizes the latest advancements in BCI research across multiple neurological disorders, offering an interdisciplinary perspective on both clinical applications and emerging technologies. We explore the progress in BCI research and its applications in addressing various neurological conditions, with a particular focus on recent clinical studies and prospective developments. Initially, the review provides an up-to-date overview of BCI technology, encompassing its classification, operational principles, and prevalent paradigms. It then critically examines specific BCI applications in movement disorders, disorders of consciousness, cognitive and mental disorders, as well as sensory disorders, highlighting novel approaches and their potential impact on patient care. This review reveals emerging trends in BCI applications, such as the integration of artificial intelligence and the development of closed-loop systems, which represent significant advancements over previous technologies. The review concludes by discussing the prospects and directions of BCI technology, underscoring the need for interdisciplinary collaboration and ethical considerations. It emphasizes the importance of prioritizing bidirectional and high-performance BCIs, areas that have been underexplored in previous reviews. Additionally, we identify crucial gaps in current research, particularly in long-term clinical efficacy and the need for standardized protocols. The role of neurosurgery in spearheading the clinical translation of BCI research is highlighted. Our comprehensive analysis presents BCI technology as an innovative key to unlocking neurological disorders, offering a transformative approach to diagnosing, treating, and rehabilitating neurological conditions, with substantial potential to enhance patients' quality of life and advance the field of neurotechnology.

Abstract:The brain-computer interface (BCI) system serves as a critical link between external output devices and the human brain. A monitored object's mental state, sensory cognition, and even higher cognition are reflected in its electroencephalography (EEG) signal. Nevertheless, unprocessed EEG signals are frequently contaminated with a variety of artifacts, rendering the analysis and elimination of impurities from the collected EEG data exceedingly challenging, not to mention the manual adjustment thereof. Over the last few decades, the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) technology has contributed to the development of BCI technology. Algorithms derived from AI and machine learning have significantly enhanced the ability to analyze and process EEG electrical signals, thereby expanding the range of potential interactions between the human brain and computers. As a result, the present BCI technology with the help of AI can assist physicians in gaining a more comprehensive understanding of their patients' physical and psychological status, thereby contributing to improvements in their health and quality of life.

Abstract:Brain-computer interface (BCI) is a communication and control system to set up a message or command pathway to external world independent to brain normal output pathway (peripheral nerves and muscles). By this method, people with severe neuromuscular dysfunction can directly express their thought and manipulate the external devices without using human language and actions. This will greatly enhance the ability of these people to manage external event and improve their quality of life. The development of BCI depends on the interdisciplinary clasp of neuroscience, engineering, psychology, computer, and rehabilitation. It has very important scientific significance, academic value and wide application prospects, and has become a hot spot. This paper reviewed the basic principle, research methods, and working progress of BCI in current studies.

The progress of BCI hardware and signal processing techniques is investigated, with a focus on the shift from bulky and invasive systems to more portable and user-friendly options. Following that, the article delves into the important advances in BCI applications across several fields. It investigates the use of BCIs in healthcare, particularly in neurorehabilitation, assistive technology, and cognitive enhancement. BCIs' potential for boosting human capacities such as communication, motor control, and sensory perception is being thoroughly researched. Furthermore, the article investigates developing BCI applications in gaming, entertainment, and virtual reality, demonstrating how BCI technologies are growing outside medical and therapeutic settings. Abstract:Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) are innovative systems that facilitate direct communication between the human brain and external devices. Leveraging advances in neuroscience and engineering, BCIs can decode neural activity, allowing users to control computers, prosthetics, or even communicate thoughts without the need for peripheral motor activity. While primarily developed for assisting individuals with motor or communication disabilities, the potential applications span from gaming to advanced robotics. Despite rapid progress, challenges remain in achieving high-resolution decoding and ensuring long-term stability. As the field advances, ethical considerations about privacy, security, and human augmentation also emerge. This paper aims to provide an in-depth exploration of the field of BCI technology. Abstract:Brain-computer interface (BCI) is a term used to describe systems that translate biological information into commands that can control external devices such as computers, prosthetics, and other machinery. While BCI is used in military applications, home control systems, and a wide array of entertainment, much of its modern interest and funding can be attributed to its utility in the medical community, where it has rapidly propelled advancements in the restoration or replacement of critical functions robbed from victims of disease, stroke, and traumatic injury. BCI devices can allow patients to move prosthetic limbs, operate devices such as wheelchairs or computers, and communicate through writing and speech-generating devices. In this article, we aim to provide an introductory summary of the historical context and modern growing utility of BCI, with specific interest in igniting the conversation of where and how the neurodiagnostics community and its associated parties can embrace and contribute to the world of BCI.

Abstract:The development and potential application of brain-computer interface (BCI) technology is closely related to the human brain, so that the ethical regulation of BCI has become an important issue attracting the consideration of society. Existing literatures have discussed the ethical norms of BCI technology from the perspectives of non-BCI developers and scientific ethics, while few discussions have been launched from the perspective of BCI developers. Therefore, there is a great need to study and discuss the ethical norms of BCI technology from the perspective of BCI developers. In this paper, we present the user-centered and non-harmful BCI technology ethics, and then discuss and look forward on them. This paper argues that human beings can cope with the ethical issues arising from BCI technology, and as BCI technology develops, its ethical norms will be improved continuously. It is expected that this paper can provide thoughts and references for the formulation of ethical norms related to BCI technology.

Abstract:Brain-computer interface (BCI) is a revolutionary human-computer interaction technology, which includes both BCI that can output instructions directly from the brain to external devices or machines without relying on the peripheral nerve and muscle system, and BCI that bypasses the peripheral nerve and muscle system and inputs electrical, magnetic, acoustic and optical stimuli or neural feedback directly to the brain from external devices or machines. With the development of BCI technology, it has potential application not only in medical field, but also in non-medical fields, such as education, military, finance, entertainment, smart home and so on. At present, there is little literature on the relevant application of BCI technology, the current situation of BCI industrialization at home and abroad and its commercial value. Abstract:Brain-computer interface (BCI) technology represents a burgeoning interdisciplinary domain that facilitates direct communication between individuals and external devices. The efficacy of BCI systems is largely contingent upon the progress in signal acquisition methodologies. This paper endeavors to provide an exhaustive synopsis of signal acquisition technologies within the realm of BCI by scrutinizing research publications from the last ten years. Our review synthesizes insights from both clinical and engineering viewpoints, delineating a comprehensive two-dimensional framework for understanding signal acquisition in BCIs. We delineate nine discrete categories of technologies, furnishing exemplars for each and delineating the salient challenges pertinent to these modalities. This review furnishes researchers and practitioners with a broad-spectrum comprehension of the signal acquisition landscape in BCI, and deliberates on the paramount issues presently confronting the field. Prospective enhancements in BCI signal acquisition should focus on harmonizing a multitude of disciplinary perspectives. Achieving equilibrium between signal fidelity, invasiveness, biocompatibility, and other pivotal considerations is imperative. By doing so, we can propel BCI technology forward, bolstering its effectiveness, safety, and dependability, thereby contributing to an auspicious future for human-technology integration.

Finally, it looks at current trends in research related to BCI use for medical, educational, and other purposes, as well as potential future applications of this technology. The paper concludes by highlighting some key challenges that still need to be addressed before widespread adoption can occur. Abstract:Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) is an advanced and multidisciplinary active research domain based on neuroscience, signal processing, biomedical sensors, hardware, etc. Since the last decades, several groundbreaking research has been conducted in this domain. Still, no comprehensive review that covers the BCI domain completely has been conducted yet. Hence, a comprehensive overview of the BCI domain is presented in this study. This study covers several applications of BCI and upholds the significance of this domain. Then, each element of BCI systems, including techniques, datasets, feature extraction methods, evaluation measurement matrices, existing BCI algorithms, and classifiers, are explained concisely. In addition, a brief overview of the technologies or hardware, mostly sensors used in BCI, is appended. Finally, the paper investigates several unsolved challenges of the BCI and explains them with possible solutions.

Abstract:BackgroundBrain-Computer Interface (BCI) is a set of technologies that are of increasing interest to researchers. BCI has been proposed as assistive technology for individuals who are non-communicative or paralyzed, such as those with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or spinal cord injury. The technology has also been suggested for enhancement and entertainment uses, and there are companies currently marketing BCI devices for those purposes (e.g., gaming) as well as health-related purposes (e.g., communication). The unprecedented direct connection created by BCI between human brains and computer hardware raises various ethical, social, and legal challenges that merit further examination and discussion.MethodsTo identify and characterize the key issues associated with BCI use, we performed a scoping review of biomedical ethics literature, analyzing the ethics concerns cited across multiple disciplines, including philosophy and medicine.ResultsBased on this investigation, we report that BCI research and its potential translation to therapeutic intervention generate significant ethical, legal, and social concerns, notably with regards to personhood, stigma, autonomy, privacy, research ethics, safety, responsibility, and justice. Our review of the literature determined, furthermore, that while these issues have been enumerated extensively, few concrete recommendations have been expressed.ConclusionsWe conclude that future research should focus on remedying a lack of practical solutions to the ethical challenges of BCI, alongside the collection of empirical data on the perspectives of the public, BCI users, and BCI researchers.

Abstract:A brain-computer interface (BCI) can realize the communication and control between the human brain and computers or other electrical equipment by electroencephalography. It is a novel kind of human2computer interface. BCIs will be applied in rehabilitation, control, and other fields. This paper introduces the working principle of BCIs. Some key techniques to design BCIs are discussed from these aspects: signal processing, device control methods, and signal feedback. Besides, the application of BCI in rehabilitation medicine is also discussed. Finally, some main problems and future trends are pointed out. The discussions have guiding values to the design and research of BCI.

Abstract:Brain–computer interface (BCI), an emerging technology that facilitates communication between brain and computer, has attracted a great deal of research in recent years. Researchers provide experimental results demonstrating that BCI can restore the capabilities of physically challenged people, hence improving the quality of their lives. BCI has revolutionized and positively impacted several industries, including entertainment and gaming, automation and control, education, neuromarketing, and neuroergonomics. Notwithstanding its broad range of applications, the global trend of BCI remains lightly discussed in the literature. Understanding the trend may inform researchers and practitioners on the direction of the field, and on where they should invest their efforts more. Noting this significance, we have analyzed 25,336 metadata of BCI publications from Scopus to determine advancement of the field. The analysis shows an exponential growth of BCI publications in China from 2019 onwards, exceeding those from the United States that started to decline during the same period. Implications and reasons for this trend are discussed. Furthermore, we have extensively discussed challenges and threats limiting exploitation of BCI capabilities. A typical BCI architecture is hypothesized to address two prominent BCI threats, privacy and security, as an attempt to make the technology commercially viable to the society.
