Abstract:The advantages of low cost, high theoretical capacity, and dependable safety of aqueous zinc ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZHSCs) enable their promising use in flexible and wearable energy storage devices. However, achieving extended cycling stability in ZHSCs is still challenged by the limited availability of carbon cathode materials that can effectively pair with zinc anode materials. Here, we report a method for synthesising heteroatom-doped carbon nanofibers using electrostatic spinning and metal-organic frameworks (specifically ZIF-8). Assembled Zn//ZPCNF-1.5 ZHSCs exhibited 193 mA h g−1 specific capacity at 1 A g−1 and 162.6 Wh kg−1 energy density at 841.2 kW kg−1. Additionally, the device showed an ultra-long cycle life, maintaining 98% capacity after 20,000 cycles. Experimental analysis revealed an increase in the number of pores and active sites after adding ZIF-8 to the precursor. Furthermore, N doping effectively enhanced Zn2+ ions chemical adsorption and improved Zn-ion storage performance. This work provides a feasible design strategy to enhance ZHSC energy storage capability for practical applications.
High ionic conductivity and toughness hydrogel electrolyte for high-performance flexible solid-state zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors enabled by cellulose-bentonite coordination interactions

Abstract:From the perspective of resource renewability and environmental sustainability, hydrogel electrolytes based on naturally abundant cellulose are ideal materials for constructing flexible solid-state zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZHSCs) and novel electrochemical energy storage (EES) devices. However, the cellulose hydrogel electrolyte, which cannot possess high ionic conductivity and mechanical strength simultaneously, hinders the further application of this electrolyte in the field of ZHSCs. In this study, a high-performance cellulose hydrogel electrolyte was prepared by introducing bentonite (BT) nanoplatelets. The lamellar structure of BT nanoplatelets and coordination interaction between BT and cellulose were utilised to achieve a high ionic conductivity of 46.3 mS cm −1 at 25 °C and compressive strength of 2.93 MPa for the cellulose/BT-ZnSO 4 hydrogel (CBH-Zn). The flexible solid-state ZHSC (CBH-ZHSC) possessed a maximum energy density of 97.4 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 400 W kg −1 and capacity retention as high as 94% after 45000 cycles at a current density of 10.0 A g −1 . Furthermore, the integrated system consisting of the CBH-ZHSC and solar cells successfully achieved energy conversion, storage, and utilisation. This strategy provides new insights into the application of cellulose hydrogel electrolytes in the field of flexible EES devices.

Flexible high electrochemical active hydrogel for wearable sensors and supercapacitor electrolytes

Abstract:With the rapid advancement of flexible, portable devices, hydrogel electrolytes have gained considerable attention as potential replacements for conventional liquid electrolytes. A hydrogel electrolyte was synthesised by cross-linking acrylic acid (AA), acrylamide (AM), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and zinc sulphate (ZnSO4). The formation of hydrogen bonds and chelate interactions between the P(AA-co-AM) polymer, CMC, and ZnSO4 created a robust network, enhancing the mechanical properties of the hydrogel electrolytes. Notably, the hydrogel electrolyte containing 0.6 % CMC demonstrated superior mechanical strength (compression strength of 1.22 MPa, tensile stress of 230 kPa, tensile strain of 424 %, adhesion strength of 1.98 MPa on wood). Additionally, the CMC/P(AA-co-AM) hydrogels exhibited commendable electrical performance (38 mS/cm) and a high gauge factor (2.9), enabling the precise detection of physiological activity signals through resistance measurements. The unique network structure of the hydrogel electrolyte also ensured a stable bonding interface between the electrode and the electrolyte. After 2000 charge-discharge cycles, the supercapacitor maintained good capacitance characteristics, with a capacitance retention rate of 71.21 % and a stable Coulombic efficiency of 98.85 %, demonstrating excellent cyclic stability. This study introduces a novel methodology for fabricating multifunctional all-solid-state supercapacitors and suggests that the hydrogel can significantly advance the development of wearable energy storage devices.
Natural Polysaccharide Strengthened Hydrogel Electrolyte and Biopolymer Derived Carbon for Durable Aqueous Zinc Ion Storage

Abstract:Aqueous zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZHSCs) represent one of the current research subjects because of their flame retardancy, ease of manufacturing, and exceptional roundtrip efficiency. With the evolution into real useful energy storage cells, the bottleneck factors of the corrosion and dendrite growth problems must be properly resolved for largely boosting their cycling life and energy efficiency. Herein, a natural polysaccharide strengthened hydrogel electrolyte (denoted as PAAm/agar/Zn(CF3SO3)2) was engineered by designing an asymmetric dual network of covalently cross-linked polyacrylamide (denoted as PAAm) and physically cross-linked loose polysaccharide (e.g., agar) followed by intense uptake of Zn(CF3SO3)2 aqueous electrolyte. In this polymeric matrix, the PAAm chains are responsible for constructing the soft domains to immobilize the water molecules, and the agar component boosts the mechanical performance (by using its inherent reversible sacrificial bonds) and favors the electrolyte ion transport. Due to these reasons, the as-designed hydrogel electrolyte effectively inhibits the zinc dendrite growth, realizes the uniform Zn deposition, and affords a satisfactory ionic conductivity of 1.55 S m-1, excellent tensile strength (78.9 kPa at 507.7% stretchable), and high compression strength (118.0 kPa at 60.0% strain). Additionally, a biopolymer-derived N-doped carbon microsphere cathode material with a highly interconnected porous carbonaceous network (denoted as NC) was also synthesized, which delivers a high capacity of 92.8 mAh g-1, along with superb rate capability and long duration cycling lifespan (95.4% retention for 10000 cycles) in the aqueous Zn//NC ZHSC. More notably, with integrated merits of the PAAm/agar/Zn(CF3SO3)2 hydrogel electrolyte and NC, the as-built quasi-solid-state ZHSC achieves a high specific capacity of 73.4 mAh g-1 and superior energy density of 61.3 Wh kg-1 together with excellent cycling stability for 10000 cycles. This work demonstrated favorable practicability in the structural design of the hydrogel electrolytes and electrode materials for advanced ZHSC applications.

Abstract:Flexible Zn-air batteries (FZABs) have significant potentials as efficient energy storage devices for wearable electronics because of their safeties and high energy-to-cost ratios. However, their application is limited by their short cycle lives, low discharge capacities per cycle, and high charge/discharge polarizations. Accordingly, herein, a poly(sodium acrylate)-polyvinyl alcohol (PANa-PVA)-ionic liquid (IL) hydrogel (PANa-PVA-IL) is prepared using a hygroscopic IL, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, as an additive for twin-chain PANa-PVA. PANa-PVA-IL exhibits a high conductivity of 306.9 mS cm(-1) and a water uptake of 2515 wt% at room temperature. Moreover, a low-cost bifunctional catalyst, namely, Co9S8 nanoparticles anchored on N- and S-co-doped activated carbon black pearls 2000 (Co9S8-NSABP), is synthesized, which demonstrates a low O-2 reversibility potential gap of 0.629 V. FZABs based on PANa-PVA-IL and Co9S8-NSABP demonstrate high discharge capacities of 1.67 mAh cm(-2) per cycle and long cycle lives of 330 h. Large-scale flexible rechargeable Zn-air pouch cells exhibit total capacities of 1.03 Ah and energy densities of 246 Wh kg(cell)(-1). This study provides new information about hydrogels with high ionic conductivities and water uptakes and should facilitate the application of FZABs in wearable electronics.
A Regenerable Hydrogel Electrolyte for Flexible Supercapacitors

Abstract:Easy regenerability of core components such as electrode and electrolyte is highly required in advanced electrochemical devices. This work reports a reliable, regenerable, and stretchable hydrogel electrolyte based on ionic bonds between polyacrylic acid (PAA) and polyallylamine (PAH). PAA-PAH electrolyte (1M LiCl addition) exhibits high ionic conductivity (0.050 S·cm-1) and excellent mechanical property (fracture strain of 1,688%). Notably, the electrolyte can be regenerated to any desired shape under mild conditions and remains 96% and 90% of the initial ionic conductivity after the first and second regeneration, respectively. PAA-PAH/LiCl-based supercapacitor exhibits nearly 100% capacitance retention upon rolling, stretching, and 5,000 charge-discharge cycles, whereas the regenerated device holds 97.6% capacitance of the initial device and 90.9% after 5,000 cycles. This low-cost, high-efficiency, and regenerable hydrogel electrolyte reveals very promising use in solid-state/flexible supercapacitors and possibly becomes a standard commercial hydrogel electrolyte for sustainable electrochemical energy devices.
Nitrogen-doped hollow carbon nanoboxes in zwitterionic polymer hydrogel electrolyte for superior quasi-solid-state zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors

Abstract:The energy output, lifespan, and availability of flexible quasi-solid-state zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZHSCs) are closely related to the carbon cathode and polymer hydrogel electrolyte. Herein, well-configured hollow carbon nanoboxes (APZC) with crystalline microdomains were synthesized through the ZIF-67 template-guided approach combined with chemical activation for boosting the ionic and electronic transport. Together with the structural advantages, including hollow architecture, porous texture, N doping, and disordered/ordered hybridization structure, the resultant APZC exhibits favorable Zn 2+ storage. Thus, an aqueous APZC-based ZHSC presents a high capacity of 112.9 mA h g −1 at 0.25 A g −1 with a satisfactory rate performance. Additionally, a zwitterionic polymer hydrogel electrolyte (P(SBMA- co -AA)/Zn(CF 3 SO 3 ) 2 ) was successfully fabricated. The synergism of different structural units in the zwitterionic polymer endows P(SBMA- co -AA)/Zn(CF 3 SO 3 ) 2 with high ionic conductivity (27.6 mS cm −1 ) and reinforced stretchability/compressibility (tensile strength of 22.4 kPa at 313.4% stretchability; compression strength of 35.7 kPa at 60.0% strain). In particular, the ionic migration channels constructed by zwitterionic groups are propitious to regulate ion transport, which is beneficial for suppressing the formation of dendrites on the Zn surface in the hydrogel electrolyte and extending the service life of the device. Amalgamating the merits of the hollow carbon cathode and zwitterionic polymer hydrogel electrolyte, the as-assembled flexible quasi-solid-state ZHSC manifests admirable cycle durability (106.0% capacity retention after 10 000 cycles) with a decent energy/power density of 89.8 W h kg −1 /14 482.7 W kg −1 and the ability to withstand deformation without distinctly sacrificing the performance, demonstrating its application potential in flexible electronics.

Abstract:Multifunctional hydrogels, particularly with superior mechanical properties and using green/sustainable approaches, have attracted increasing attention because of their many applications and consistency with the green chemistry principle; unfortunately, their effective fabrication process is challenging. In this work, inspired by unique functions in plant-derived components, a multifunctional polyacrylic acid (PAA) hydrogel was innovatively developed using ZnCl 2 and biomass-derived materials. Ingeniously, ZnCl 2 has multiple functions, in combination with cellulose, lignin, and citric acid (CA), delivering intriguing properties to the hydrogel system. As a solvent system, the ZnCl 2 solution has extraordinary H-bonding-donating ability, dissolving cellulose macromolecular chains; subsequently, solubilized cellulose as green reinforced-fillers are added to hydrogel, improving the strength properties, with compression strength of ∼ 4.1 MPa, tensile strength of ∼ 795.4 kPa, and elongation at break of ∼ 620 %. The lignin-ZnCl 2 catalysis system imparts a fast PAA gelation process, and the resultant hydrogel has strong/long-lasting/repeatable adhesive strength of 25.5 kPa (on Zn-carbon cloth) in 28 days. Additionally, ZnCl 2 can form reversible ionic/electrostatic interactions with both lignin and CA, further improving the adhesive and mechanical properties. As anti-freezing agents, water-retaining agents and conducting medium, ZnCl 2 also endows the hydrogel with desirable environmental compatibility and good conductivity (14.2 mS·cm −1 ). Furthermore, the presence of plant-based components endows the hydrogel with ultraviolet (UV) blocking, biocompatibility and antibacterial attribute. Significantly, the as-prepared hydrogels are suited for such diverse applications as flexible wearable strain sensors, bio-electrodes and zinc-ion hybrid capacitors (ZHCs), even can efficiently work at −65 °C. This study provides a new strategy of engineering multifunctional hydrogels using plant-based functional components, and these hydrogels show promising applications in many emerging areas including electronic skin sensors, health monitoring and energy storage devices.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZHSCs) are promising energy storage devices for the safety in portable and wearable electronics, but they still suffer from deformation-induced failure, narrow operating temperature windows, zinc dendrites and poor cycling life. Herein, a robust flexible ZHSC is fabricated by using an anti-freezing and anti-drying organohydrogel electrolyte (OHE). The OHE consists of a poly(2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane-sulfonic acid)/polyacrylamide (PAMPS/PAAm) double-network matrix and a binary solvent electrolyte system−ethylene glycol/H2O (EG/H2O with a water content of 10% v/v) containing ZnCl2/NH4Cl salts. The OHE exhibits good conductivity (1 mS/cm at −30 °C) and stable flexibility in the temperature ranging from −30 °C to 120 °C. The obtained ZHSC is resistant to mechanical damage under various bending angles and pressures. Moreover, a high energy density of 45.9 Wh/kg and a high power density of 320.0 W/kg are achieved for the flexible ZHSC. The ZHSC displays broad temperature adaptability, retains 95.7% capacitance after storage at −30 °C for 63 days, and retains 88.6% capacitance after 12000 cycles at 80 °C and 5 A/g. As compared with the control hydrogel electrolyte-based ZHSC, the OHE-based ZHSC has features of wide-temperature tolerance, dendrite-free and decreased hydrogen evolution altogether.

Abstract:Hydrogels are particularly promising electrolyte materials for constructing flexible and safe quasi-solid state supercapacitor due to their good flexibility, ionic conductivity and intrinsic safety. However, it remains a challenge to simultaneously obtain excellent mechanical robustness, high ionic conductivity and outstanding flexibility, particularly in sub-zero temperatures. Hence, we introduced a novel bacterial cellulose (BC) aerogel reinforced sodium polyacrylate/potassium hydroxide (PANa/KOH) hydrogel as a hydrogel electrolyte for flexible alkaline supercapacitor. The PANa/BC/KOH hydrogel electrolyte showed outstanding mechanical property (stress of 1.1 MPa), excellent anti-swelling performance and high ionic conductivity of 1.91 S m−1 at 25 °C, 1.35 S m−1 at −25 °C, exhibiting a superior anti-freezing performance. Benefiting from these intriguing integrated characteristics, the asymmetric supercapacitor (SC-PANa/BC/KOH) assembled PANa/BC/KOH hydrogel electrolyte and CoNi LDH@CC//AC@CC electrodes delivered a superior energy density of 25.63 W h kg−1 at a power density of 1200 W kg−1 and maintained a good retention of 92.05 % after 10,000 cycles. Meanwhile, the SC-PANa/BC/KOH exhibited excellent flexibility and safety, which is well adapted to various extreme conditions, such as weight-loading, bending and hammering. This work provided new sights into design of strong, anti-freezing, anti-swelling and high ionic conductive hydrogel electrolyte, paving the way for developing extremely safe wearable storage devices.

Abstract:Ionic conductive hydrogels (ICHs) have received widespread attention as an ideal candidate for flexible electronic devices. However, conventional ICHs failed in widespread applications due to their inability to simultaneously possess high toughness, high ionic conductivity, and anti-freezing properties. Here, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyacrylamide (PAAm) were first dissolved in the zinc chloride solution, in which zinc ions (Zn 2+ ) act as ionic cross-linkers and conducting ions, followed by the introduction of xanthan gum (XG) with a unique structure of trisaccharide side chains into the PVA/PAAm semi-interpenetrating network to prepare a dual-network ICHs (refers as PPXZ). Enabled by the synergistic effect of intermolecular chemical covalent cross-linking and physical cross-linking, PPXZ hydrogels exhibit significantly improved mechanical properties without sacrificing electrical conductivity. Furthermore, PPXZ hydrogels are successfully applied to flexible electronic devices, such as strain sensors and zinc ion hybrid supercapacitors, exhibiting satisfactory sensing sensitivity and cycling stability at a wide temperature range, respectively. Even at a high current density (10 A g −1 ), the capacity of the supercapacitor retains 88.24 % after 10,000 cycles. This strategy provides new insight for ICHs in wide temperature-applied flexible electronic devices.

Abstract:For the development of advanced flexible and wearable electronic devices, functional electrolytes with excellent conductivity, temperature tolerance, and desirable mechanical properties need to be engineered. Herein, an alkaline double-network hydrogel with high conductivity and superior mechanical and antifreezing properties is designed and promisingly utilized as the flexible electrolyte in all-solid-state zinc-air batteries. The conductive hydrogel is comprised of covalently cross-linked polyelectrolyte poly(2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid potassium salt) (PAMPS-K) and interpenetrating methyl cellulose (MC) in the presence of concentrated alkaline solutions. The covalently cross-linked PAMPS-K skeleton and interpenetrating MC chains endow the hydrogel with good mechanical strength, toughness, an extremely rapid self-recovery capability, and an outstanding antifatigue property. Gratifyingly, the entrapment of a concentrated alkaline solution in the hydrogel matrix yields an extremely high ionic conductivity (105 mS cm-1 at 25 °C) and an excellent antifreezing capacity. The hydrogel retains comparable conductivity and eligible strength to withstand various mechanical deformations at -20 °C. The all-solid-state zinc-air batteries using PAMPS-K/MC hydrogels as flexible alkaline electrolytes exhibit comparable values of specific capacity (764.7 mAh g-1), energy capacity (850.2 mWh g-1), cycling stability, and mechanical flexibility. The batteries still possess competitive electrochemical performances even when the operating temperature drops to -20 °C.

Abstract:Web Services are a promising solution to an age-old need: fast and flexible information sharing among people and businesses. They represent the next phase of distributed computing, building on the shoulders of the previous distributed models. Web Services leverage the ubiquity of the Internet to link applications, systems, and resources within and among enterprises to enable exciting, new business processes and relationships with customers, partners, and suppliers around the world. They enable access to data that has previously been locked within corporate networks and accessible only by using specialized software. Along with the benefits of Web Services comes a serious risk: sensitive and private data can be exposed to people who are not supposed to see it. The security issues of Web Services in a distributed environment are a major concern of research. Web Services will never attain their tremendous potential unless we learn how to manage the associated risks. The paper therefore focuses on the general framework of security issues and the proposed solution to web services security risks.

Abstract:With the development of flexible wearable electronic products, the demand for energy storage devices with high energy density and light weight is increasing, and flexible zinc-air batteries (ZABs) are expected to become a new generation of matching power source for wearable devices. The synthesis of hydrogel electrolytes with high ionic conductivity, excellent mechanical properties and strong alkali resistance is the key to the assembly of flexible ZABs. However, the conventional hydrogel electrolytes are very easy to detach from the electrode after being applied to the flexible ZABs through multiple bending, high temperature and low temperature environments, resulting in a large interfacial resistance, which limits the application of the batteries. Herein, a multifunctional group polymer, carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) is cross-linked with the copolymer of acrylamide (AM) and sodium acrylate (ANa) to form a high-performance double-network hydrogel with a high ionic conductivity of 145.63 mS cm −1 . The optimal hydrogel electrolyte exhibits an admirable power density of 120.87 mW cm −2 when applying to a flexible ZABs. Meanwhile, the battery not only show remarkable electrochemical performance over a wide temperature range (−20 to 80 °C), but also possess good stability and practicality under various extreme conditions. This work opens up new ideas for the development of hydrogel electrolytes with high adhesion and performance, and provides new strategies for the research of flexible batteries with adaptability to extreme conditions.

Abstract:A bifunctional hydrogel with high Zn2+ conductivity and rich hydrogen bonds is simultaneously used for both highly sensitive strain sensor and stable electrolyte of Zn‐ion battery. The sensor and battery are further integrated into a self‐powered fibrous sensing system, which shows stability and high sensitivity for human motion monitoring and ball motion detection. Achieving highly efficient self‐powered fibrous sensing systems is desirable for smart electronic textiles but remains a great challenge. Here, a bifunctional hydrogel is proposed by introducing of polyacrylic acid grafted MXene (MXene‐g‐PAA) into polyacrylamide/chitosan, achieving high‐sensitivity sensor and a stable hydrogel electrolyte of battery. The MXene‐g‐PAA flakes act as ion transport "highway", significantly enhance ionic conductivity, thereby increasing the sensitivity of sensors and facilitating Zn2+ diffusion in Zn‐ion battery (ZIB). The rich hydrogen bonding network in the hydrogel improves its mechanical properties and limits water molecule movement, thus reducing side reactions and prolonging the stability of ZIB. As a result, the fibrous sensor exhibits high strain sensitivity (gauge factor of 2.4) with a wide detection range (0–800%), and the fibrous Zn‐ion battery exhibits high capacity (353 mAh cm−3) with long cycling stability (400 cycles). The hydrogel‐based sensor and ZIB can be easily integrated into a flexible self‐powered sensing system, which effectively detects human movement and 3D ball motion. The bifunctional hydrogel with the integrated fibrous system will shed light on the development of next‐generation smart electronic textiles.

Abstract:The development of personalized and wearable devices has accelerated the investigation of flexible, biocompatible, and stretchable supercapacitors (SCs), enabling the integration into all-in-one integrated self-charging power packages. However, the most explored polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based gel electrolytes cannot well meet the requirements of stretchable and biocompatible SCs, mainly due to their inherently poor stretchable features. Herein, we report a new MXene-based polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogel with high mechanical stretchability and excellent ionic conductivity. The hydrogel is utilized as the electrolyte of SCs and the electrode of self-powered triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) simultaneously in the integrated self-charging power package. The SC exhibits good biocompatibility, high capacitance, high flexibility, and long-term stability, which is suitable for wearable energy storage devices and implanted electronic device. It can be implanted into rats with high biocompatibility. It has promising for use in portable, wearable, and implantable energy related devices.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZHSCs) have attracted considerable attention owing to the bivalent nature, high abundance, and stability in the water-based system of zinc. High energy density and superb power output can be achieved simultaneously by integrating a battery-type electrode and a capacitive-type electrode. However, there are still many issues that remain, including but not only hydrogen evolution reaction, dendrite growth, and dramatic capacity loss at low temperatures. Herein, a new type of hybrid "water-in-salt" hydrogel electrolyte based on 1 m Zn(CH3COO)2 and 20 m CH3COOK to expand the voltage window of ZHSCs to 0–2.1 V by suppressing the decomposition of water molecules is developed. The aqueous ZHSC delivers maximum energy of 100.2 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 487.5 W kg−1 based on the active materials and displays excellent cycling stability with 99.5% capacitance retention after 4000 cycles. Meanwhile, it is found that the assembled flexible quasi-solid-state ZHSC using the potassium polyacrylate/sodium carboxymethyl cellulose hydrogel electrolyte (containing 1 m Zn(CH3COO)2 and 20 m CH3COOK) also shows high-performance (energy density of 106.5 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 383.3 W kg−1) with temperature adaptability at low temperature and wearable application potential with excellent energy storage performance.

Highly Strong, Tough, and Cryogenically Adaptive Hydrogel Ionic Conductors via Coordination Interactions

Abstract:Despite the promise of high flexibility and conformability of hydrogel ionic conductors, existing polymeric conductive hydrogels have long suffered from compromises in mechanical, electrical, and cryoadaptive properties due to monotonous functional improvement strategies, leading to lingering challenges. Here, we propose an all-in-one strategy for the preparation of poly(acrylic acid)/cellulose (PAA/Cel) hydrogel ionic conductors in a facile yet effective manner combining acrylic acid and salt-dissolved cellulose, in which abundant zinc ions simultaneously form strong coordination interactions with the two polymers, while free solute salts contribute to ionic conductivity and bind water molecules to prevent freezing. Therefore, the developed PAA/Cel hydrogel simultaneously achieved excellent mechanical, conductive, and cryogenically adaptive properties, with performances of 42.5 MPa for compressive strength, 1.6 MPa for tensile strength, 896.9% for stretchability, 9.2 MJ m-3 for toughness, 59.5 kJ m-2 for fracture energy, and 13.9 and 6.2 mS cm-1 for ionic conductivity at 25 and -70 °C, respectively. Enabled by these features, the resultant hydrogel ionic conductor is further demonstrated to be assembled as a self-powered electronic skin (e-skin) with high signal-to-noise ratio for use in monitoring movement and physiological signals regardless of cold temperatures, with hinting that could go beyond high-performance hydrogel ionic conductors.

Abstract:Zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitor (ZHSC), emerging as a promising energy storage device, bring together the benefits of the high power density of supercapacitors, the high energy density of batteries and the environmental and cost benefits of zinc-ion technology. However, the development of high energy density ZHSC working in a wide temperature range is still a challenge. The key to achieve this target is to develop the electrolyte with thermal stability and anti-freezing property which is compatible with the advanced cathode material. Herein, a natural biomass coconut shell derived activated carbon as cathode and cost-effective aqueous Zn(ClO4)2 as electrolyte, are applied in aqueous ZHSC. The fabricated aqueous ZHSC exhibits an outstanding high energy density of 190.3 Wh/kg at 89.8 W/kg. Furthermore, a robust flexible quasi-solid-state ZHSC device was constructed by using a cross-linked poly(vinyl alcohol)/montmorillonite/Zn(ClO4)2 gel electrolyte (PVA/MMT/Zn(ClO4)2), which shows superior electrochemical performance over a wide working temperature range. Experimental analysis and molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the Zn(ClO4)2 process faster ionic migration compared to other Zn-based salts and form more hydrogen bonds with H2O, leading to a superior anti-freezing property. Our flexible device maintains the high energy storage capacities and excellent cycling stability over a wide temperature range from -50 °C to 80 °C, suggesting its great potential applications for energy storage applications in harsh environmental conditions.
