Abstract:Background: Physical function (PF), such as muscle strength, performing daily activities, has gradually declined with the increase of age, causing the occurrence of disability and diseases burden. Air pollution exposure and physical activity (PA) were both linked to PF. We aimed to explore the individual and joint effects of particulate matter <2.5 mu m (PM2.5) and PA on PF. Methods: A total of 4537 participants and 12,011 observations aged >= 45 years old from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) cohort from 2011 to 2015 were included into the study. PF was assessed by a combined score of four tests, including grip strength, walking speed, sense of balance, and chair standing tests. Air pollution exposure data was from The ChinaHighAirPollutants (CHAP) dataset. The annual PM2.5 exposure for each individual was estimated based on county-level resident addresses. We estimated the volume of moderate-tovigorous physical activity (MVPA) by quoting metabolic equivalent (MET). Multivariate linear model was conducted for baseline analysis, and linear mixed model with random participant intercepts was constructed for cohort longitudinal analysis. Results: PM2.5 was negatively associated with PF, while PA was positively associated with PF in baseline analysis. In cohort longitudinal analysis, a 10 mu g/m(3) increase in PM2.5 was associated to a 0.025 point (95 % CI: -0.047, -0.003) decrease in PF score, and a 10-MET-h/week increase in PA was related to a 0.004 point (95 % CI: 0.001, 0.008) increase in PF score. The association between PM2.5 and PF decreased by increased PA intensity, and PA reversed the detrimental effects between PM2.5 and PF. Conclusion: PA attenuated the association of air pollution with PF at both high and low levels of air pollution, implying that PA may be an effective behavior to reduce the adverse effects of poor air quality on PF.
Association Between Joint Physical Activity and Dietary Quality and Lower Risk of Depression Symptoms in US Adults: Cross-sectional NHANES Study

Abstract:Background: Depression escalating public health concern and the modest efficacy of currently available treatments have prompted efforts to identify modifiable risk factors associated with depression symptoms. Physical inactivity, poor nutrition, or other lifestyle behaviors are among the potentially modifiable risk factors most consistently linked with depression. Past evidence regarding the single effect of physical activity (PA) or dietary quality (DQ) on reducing the risk of depression symptoms has been well-documented. However, the association of the joint effect of PA and DQ on depression symptoms has never been investigated in a representative sample of adults. Objective: This study investigates the association between PA and depression symptoms and between DQ and depression symptoms, and their combined effects on US adults. Methods: Data were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007 to 2018 cycles. The primary exposures were DQ and PA, measured using the Healthy Eating Index (HEI)-2015 and the metabolic equivalent (MET) minutes per week reported in questionnaires, respectively. Depression symptoms were defined as a 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) score of ≥10. We created 4 lifestyle categories: healthy diet and active individuals, unhealthy diet but active individuals, healthy diet but inactive individuals, and unhealthy diet and inactive individuals. Participants were considered to have a healthy diet if they fell within the 60th percentile of the HEI-2015 or to be active if they met the current guidelines for PA. A survey-multivariable logistic regression approach was used to model adjust the variables relevant to the associations, and an age-adjusted prevalence for depression symptoms was calculated following the NHANES guidelines. Results: In total, 19,295 participants represented a weighted number of 932.5 million adults aged 20 to 80 years in the noninstitutionalized US population. The total age-adjusted prevalence of depression symptoms among all respondents was 7.08% (1507/19,295). Of the respondents, 81.97% (15,816/19,295) met the PA recommendation and 26.79% (5170/19,295) scored at or above the 60th percentile on the HEI-2015. Depression symptoms were inversely associated with a higher level of PA (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 0.819, 95% CI 0.716-0.938) and healthy DQ (AOR 0.809, 95% CI 0.701-0.931), respectively. A healthy diet combined with recommended PA was associated with a significantly lower risk of depression symptoms (AOR 0.658, 95% CI 0.538-0.803) than those who consumed an unhealthy diet but were physically active (AOR 0.890, 95% CI 0.765-1.038) or consumed a healthy diet but were physically inactive (AOR 1.077, 95% CI 0.817-1.406). Conclusions: Our findings indicate that people with a healthy diet and recommended PA have a lower risk of depression symptoms than those with an unhealthy diet and a low level of PA. A healthy dietary habit and regular PA are potential precautions against depression.
Associations between device-measured and self-reported physical activity and common mental disorders: Findings from a large-scale prospective cohort study

Abstract:Objectives: To investigate the associations between device-measured and self-reported physical activity (PA) and incident common mental disorders in the general population. Design and setting: Large-scale prospective cohort study. Participants: Using the UK Biobank data, a validated PA questionnaire was used to estimate self-reported weekly PA in 365 656 participants between 2006 and 2010 while 91 800 participants wore wrist-worn accelerometers for 7 days in 2013-2015 to derive objectively measured PA. All the participants were followed up until 2021. Main outcome measures: Incidences of depression and anxiety were ascertained from hospital inpatient records. Cox proportional hazards models and restricted cubic splines were used to assess the associations between subjectively and objectively measured PA and common mental disorders. Results: During a median follow-up of 12.6 years, 16 589 cases of depression, 13 905 cases of anxiety and 5408 cases of comorbid depression and anxiety were documented in the questionnaire-based cohort. We found J-shaped associations of self-reported PA with incident risk of depression and anxiety, irrespective of PA intensities. The lowest risk for depression occurred at 550, 390, 180 and 560 min/week of light-intensity PA (LPA), moderate-intensity PA (MPA), vigorous-intensity PA (VPA) and moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA), respectively. During a median follow-up of 6.9 years, a total of 2258 cases of depression, 2166 cases of anxiety and 729 cases of comorbid depression and anxiety were documented in the accelerometer-based cohort. We found L-shaped associations of device-measured MPA and VPA with incident depression and anxiety. MPA was adversely associated with incident depression and anxiety until 660 min/week, after which the associations plateaued. The point of inflection for VPA occurred at 50 min/week, beyond which there was a diminished but continued reduction in the risks of depression and anxiety. Conclusion: Different patterns of associations between self-reported and device-measured PA and mental health were observed. Future PA guidelines should fully recognise this inconsistency and increasingly employ objectively measured PA standards.
The associations of physical activity and lifetime depression with all-cause and cause-specific mortality: evidence from a prospective cohort study

Abstract:This study aims to explore the joint associations of physical activity and lifetime depression with all-cause and cause-specific mortality. The present study using data from UK biobank, included 316568 participants aged 37 to 73 years recruited from 22 centers between 2006 and 2010. Total physical activity (TPA), moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and vigorous physical activity (VPA), assessed by metabolic equivalent task (MET) were used and Cox-proportional hazard models were performed in this study. The incidence rate of all-cause, CVD, and cancer mortality was 4.35 (4.29-4.42), 0.69 (0.67-0.72), and 2.23 (2.19-2.28) per 1000 person-years after an average follow-up time of 12.49 years. Lower levels of TPA, MVPA, and VPA were all independently associated with elevated risk of all-cause and cancer mortality. Lifetime depression was significantly associated with increased risk of all-cause (HR=1.46, 95%CI: 1.40-1.52), CVD (HR=1.48, 95%CI: 1.33-1.64), and cancer mortality (HR=1.13, 95%CI: 1.06-1.21). Significant interactive effect of low levels of TPA, MVPA, and VPA and lifetime depression were associated with all-cause mortality. The risk of all-cause mortality associated with lifetime depression was deteriorated with low levels of physical activity. Relevant interventions for regular PA should be performed among depressed population.

We included and analyzed 31221 participants (aged ≥18 years) from cross-sectional survey of 2007-2018 U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The PA domains were assessed by self-reported questionnaire and categorized based on the PA Guidelines. Depressive symptoms were measured by the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire. Participants achieving PA guidelines (≥150 min/week) were 26% (Odd ratio [OR] 0.74, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.68-0.80) and 43% (OR 0.57, 95% CI 0.51-0.62) less likely to have depression depending on total PA and LTPA, respectively; while OPA or TPA was not demonstrated lower risks of depression. LTPA at levels of 1-149, 150-299 and ≥300 min/week was associated 31% (OR 0.69, 95% CI 0.60-0.78), 43% (OR 0.57, 95% CI 0.49-0.67) and 51% (OR 0.49, 95% CI 0.43-0.55) lower odds of depression, respectively. LTPA, but not OPA or TPA, at any amount, was associated with lower risk of depression, suggesting significant mental health would benefit from increased PA, even at levels below the recommendation.

Abstract:The general benefit of physical activity (PA) to one's mental health has been widely acknowledged. Nevertheless, the specific type and amount of PA that associates with lower risk of depression in China awaits further investigation. The present study was conducted on middle- and older-aged Chinese population with two objectives: 1) to understand the patterns of PA; 2) to measure the associations between depression and PA at different levels from various aspects.Using data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS, 2015), we selected 9118 community residents aged 45 years and older. Depressive symptoms were measured by 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies (CES-D 10). Multivariate logistic regression model was performed to examine the association between risk of depression and PA from four aspects including intensity, frequency, duration, and volume.Spending 1–2 days/week (OR = 0.58, 95% CI: 0.36, 0.91), less than 30 minutes each time (OR = 0.66, 95% CI: 0.42, 1.03) or 150–299 min/week (OR = 0.49, 95% CI: 0.28, 0.87) on Moderate Physical Activity (MPA) was associated with lower odds of depression in women. Spending 3–5 days/week (OR = 1.98, 95% CI: 1.29, 3.05) or 6–7 days/week (OR = 1.50, 95% CI: 1.07, 2.11), 4 hours and longer each time (OR = 1.65, 95% CI: 1.18, 2.32), 300 min/week or longer (OR = 1.65, 95% CI: 1.22, 2.24) on Vigorous Physical Activity (VPA) in total, or 2250 Metabolic Equivalent of Task (OR = 1.73, 95% CI: 1.26, 2.38) on Moderate-to-Vigorous PA was associated with higher risk of depression in men.The association between depression and PA depended largely on intensity and gender. Lower frequency, shorter duration, and moderate amount of MPA was associated with lower risk of depression in women. Risk of depression was higher in men who spent higher frequency, longer duration, and overlong time on VPA.

Abstract:Abstract Background Obesity has been related to depression and adhering healthy lifestyle was beneficial to lower the risk of depression; however, little is known about the relationship between body composition and fat distribution with depression risk and the influence of body composition and fat distribution on the association of lifestyle and depression. Therefore, we aimed to investigate whether body composition and fat distribution were associated with the adverse events of depression and the relationship between lifestyle and depression. Methods We included 330,131 participants without depression at baseline in the UK Biobank (mean age, 56.9 years; 53.83% females). The assessment of depression was sourced from health outcomes across self-report, primary care, hospital inpatient data, and death data. Body composition was determined by bioelectrical impedance. Seven lifestyles (no current smoking, moderate alcohol consumption, regular physical activity, healthy diet, less sedentary behavior, healthy sleep pattern, and appropriate social connection) were used to generate a lifestyle score. Results During a median of 11.7 years of follow-up, 7576 incident depression occurred. All the body composition measures were positively associated with depression risk, with the Hazard ratios (HR) for the uppermost tertile (T3) versus the lowest tertile (T1) ranging from 1.26 (95% CI: 1.15–1.39) for trunk fat-free mass (TFFM) to 1.78 (1.62–1.97) for leg fat percentage (LFP). In addition, we found significant interactions between fat mass-related indices, especially leg fat mass (LFM) ( p = 1.65 × 10 −9 ), and lifestyle score on the risk of depression, for which the beneficial associations of a healthy lifestyle with the risk of depression were more evident among participants with low body fat measurement. Conclusions High levels of body composition measures were associated with an increased depression risk. Adverse body composition measures may weaken the link between a healthy lifestyle and a reduced risk of depression.

Abstract:Objective: Whether vigorous physical activities (VPA) bring additional benefits to depression prevention in comparison with moderate physical activity (MPA) remains unclear. The aim of this study was to find the correlation between the proportion of VPA to moderate-to-VPA (MVPA) (a combination of VPA and MPA) and the risk for depression, as well as to explore whether correlations differ among subgroups separated by age and sex. Methods: The data originating from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007–2018 were applied. The total amount of PA per week was obtained by multiplying frequency and duration. The proportion of VPA to MVPA was obtained among the participants who performed any MVPA. Depression was set for those who scored 10 and above in the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). The odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for depression were evaluated using logistic regression. Results: Among 26,849 participants of this study, only 12,939 adults were found with any MVPA, in which 748 participants with depression were detected. Logistic regression was conducted among 12,939 participants. The participants with higher than 66.7–100% of MVPA as VPA were inversely correlated with a 30% (OR = 0.70, 95% CI = 0.50, 0.99) lower risk for depression. The subgroup analyses revealed that significant correlations were only found in men and those aged 45 years and above. Conclusion: This study suggested that a higher proportion of VPA to MVPA might be correlated with a lower risk for depression in men and those aged 45 years and above. Besides the recommendation, adults should perform 150 min MVPA per week, more time should be spent in performing VPA in MVPA among men and older adults.

Abstract:This study aims to examine the independent and joint associations of physical activity (PA) and sedentary behaviour with depressive symptoms. A population-based cross-sectional study conducted in China included 17,861 adults. PA and sedentary behaviour were assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Depressive symptoms were determined by the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire score ≥10. Logistic regression models were used to calculate the odds ratios (ORs) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The prevalence of depressive symptoms among all participants was 20.6% (3679/17861). Higher levels of PA were inversely associated with depressive symptoms, whereas prolonged sedentary behaviour was associated with increased odds of depressive symptoms. The positive associations between sedentary behaviour and depressive symptoms remained significant, regardless of PA levels. In joint analyses, the depressive symptoms OR comparing adults who reported low level of PA with the highest tertile of sedentary behaviour to those reporting high level of PA with the lowest tertile of sedentary behaviour was 1.99 (95% CI 1.64 to 2.40). This study indicated that high level of PA may not offset the increased risk of depressive symptoms associated with high amounts of sedentary behaviour, and therefore these behaviours should be considered jointly to obtain optimal prevention effects.

Abstract:Purpose To examine the dose‒response relationships of sedentary behavior (SB) and physical activities (PAs) with depression, and to explore the effects of replacing SB with PAs on depression risk. Methods The study used data from UK Biobank aged 37 to 73 years. Light physical activity (LPA), moderate-to-vigorous activity (MVPA), sleep duration, and total sedentary behavior (TSB) were measured by accelerometers. Self-reported SB was also adopted when daily screen-sedentary behavior time (SSB) and leisure-sedentary behavior time (LSB) were the focus. Incident depression was obtained from the part of mental and behavioral disorders in the "first occurrence fields" of UK Biobank. A Cox proportional hazard model and isotemporal substitution model were performed to explore the associations of LPA, MVPA, TSB, LSB, SSB, and sleep on depression and the effects of replacing SB time with equal PA time. Results Highest levels of MVPA (HR = 0.58, 95%CI: 0.50-0.68) were associated with decreased depression risk compared with the lowest level (Q1). Longer SSB time (HR = 1.18, 95%CI: 1.06-1.32), LSB time (HR = 1.19, 95%CI: 1.07-1.32), and TSB time (HR = 1.17, 95%CI: 1.00-1.38) could increase depression risk significantly. Replacing 1h/day TSB, SSB, and LSB with MVPA brought the greatest risk reductions [31% (HR = 0.69, 95%CI: 0.62-0.77), 30% (HR = 0.70, 95%CI: 0.65-0.77), and 29% (HR = 0.71, 95%CI: 0.65-0.77)]. Under the same conditions, the effects of LPA replacement were also significant, but weaker than those of MVPA. Subgroup analyses showed that replacing 1h/d TSB with LPA could significantly decrease the depression risk for the females, but not for the males. Conclusion Large benefits for reducing the risk of incident depression could be attained by replacing a period of TSB, SSB, or LSB with equal PA time, especially for MVPA. Regular PA and less SB were recommended for improving mental health.

The relationship between physical activity and depression among community-dwelling adults in Wuhan, China

Abstract:Background: While the association between physical activity (PA) and depression has been established, there is limited research on the effect of PA on the risk of depression among Chinese individuals. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between PA and depression among Chinese individuals. Methods: We used a stratified random sampling approach to recruit participants from five urban districts in Wuhan, China. A total of 5,583 permanent residents aged 18 years or older completed questionnaires, which included the International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form (IPAQ-SF) to measure PA, and the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) to evaluate depressive symptoms. To control for potential confounders, multiple logistic regression was employed to assess the association of PA with depression. Results: The depression group had significantly lower weekly PA levels, measured in metabolic equivalent of task-minutes per week (MET-min/w), compared to the non-depression group [1,770 (693–4,200) MET-min/w vs. 2,772 (1,324–4,893) MET-min/w, p < 0.001]. In the fully adjusted model, the moderate and high PA level groups had lower odds ratios (ORs) for depressive symptoms compared to the low PA level group [OR (95% confidence interval (CI)) = 0.670 (0.523–0.858), 0.618 (0.484–0.790), respectively]. Among males, moderate and high levels of PA were associated with lower risk of depression compared to low PA levels [OR (95% CI) = 0.417 (0.268–0.649), 0.381 (0.244–0.593), respectively]. However, this association was not observed in females [OR (95% CI) = 0.827 (0.610–1.121), 0.782 (0.579–1.056), respectively]. The study found a significant interaction between PA levels and gender in relation to depression ( P for interaction = 0.019). Conclusion: The findings suggest a negative association between PA and risk of depressive symptoms, indicating that moderate to high levels of PA may serve as a protective factor against depressive symptoms.

Abstract:Subway systems are key components in mass transportation networks worldwide, providing rapid and affordable transportation to urban communities in 58 different countries. The benefits afforded by subway transit are numerous and mainly derived from the reduction in automobile use, thereby limiting environmental and health hazards associated with exhaust-air emissions. Additionally, by limiting congestion and providing vital transportation links within a city, subways also improve the overall quality of life of urban communities. However, to best maximize the positive impact on the urban environment, subway systems need to provide a safe and healthy environment for both passengers and subway transit workers. Periodically, safety concerns are raised, most recently in relation to the vulnerability of subways to terrorist attacks. To examine this issue more carefully, we conducted a structured review of the literature to identify and characterize potential health and safety hazards associated with subways. A secondary goal was to identify various risk management strategies designed to minimize the risk of these hazards. This information may be helpful to urban communities, urban planners, public health specialists, and others interested in subway safety.
Associations between depression and the incident risk of obesity in southwest China: A community population prospective cohort study

Abstract:Objective: This study aimed to describe the incidence of obesity and investigate associations between depression and the risk of incident obesity among residents in Southwest China. Methods: A 10-year prospective cohort study of 4,745 non-obese adults was conducted in Guizhou, southwest China from 2010 to 2020. Depression was assessed by the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) while the obesity was identified by waist circumference (WC) and/or body mass index (BMI). Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HR), and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of depression and incident obesity. Results: A total of 1,115 incident obesity were identified over an average follow-up of 7.19 years, with an incidence of 32.66 per 1,000 PYs for any obesity, 31.14 per 1,000 PYs and 9.40 per 1,000 PYs for abdominal obesity and general obesity, respectively. After adjustment for potential confounding factors, risks of incident abdominal obesity for subjects with minimal (aHR: 1.22, 95% CI: 1.05, 1.43), and mild or more advanced depression (aHR: 1.27, 95% CI: 1.01, 1.62) were statistically higher than those not depressed, while there was no significant association with incident general obesity. The risks of any incident obesity among subjects with minimal (aHR: 1.21, 95% CI: 1.04, 1.40), mild or more advanced depression (aHR: 1.30, 95% CI: 1.03, 1.64) were significantly higher than those not depressed and positive association was found for PHQ score per SD increase (aHR: 1.07, 95%CI: 1.01, 1.13), too. The association was stronger significantly in Han Chinese (minimal: aHR: 1.27, 95% CI: 1.05, 1.52; mild or more advanced: aHR: 1.70, 95% CI: 1.30, 2.21) and farmers (minimal: aHR: 1.64, 95% CI: 1.35, 2.01; mild or more advanced: aHR: 1.82, 95% CI: 1.32, 2.51). Conclusion: Depression increased the risk of incident obesity among adults in Southwest China, especially among Han Chinese and farmers. This finding suggests that preventing and controlling depression may benefit the control of incident obesity.

Relationship Between Dietary Pattern and Depressive Symptoms: an International Multicohort Study

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Several previous studies have shown that dietary patterns are associated with the incidence of depressive symptoms. However, the results have been inconsistent. This study aimed to prospectively investigate the association between dietary patterns and the risk of depressive symptoms in two large cohort studies.METHODS:The Tianjin Chronic Low-grade Systemic Inflammation and Health (TCLSIH) cohort study included a total of 7,094 participants living in Tianjin, China from 2013 to 2019, and the UK Biobank cohort study includes 96,810 participants who were recruited from 22 assessment centers across the UK taken between 2006 and 2010. All participants were free of a history of cardiovascular disease (CVD), cancer, and depressive symptoms at baseline. Dietary patterns at baseline were identified with factor analysis based on responses to a validated food frequency questionnaire in TCLSIH or Oxford WebQ in UK Biobank. Depressive symptoms were evaluated using the Chinese version of the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) in TCLSIH or hospital inpatient records in UK Biobank. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate the association between dietary patterns and depressive symptoms.RESULTS:A total of 989, and 1,303 participants developed depressive symptoms during 17,410 and 709,931 person-years of follow-up. After adjusting for several potential confounders, the multivariable HRs (95% CIs) of the depressive symptoms were 0.71 (0.57, 0.88) for traditional Chinese dietary pattern, 1.29 (1.07, 1.55) for processed animal offal included animal food dietary pattern, and 1.22 (1.02, 1.46) for sugar rich dietary pattern in TCLSIH (all Q4 vs Q1). In the UK Biobank, the HRs (95% CIs) of depressive symptoms were 1.39 (1.16, 1.68) for processed food dietary pattern (Q4 vs Q1), 0.90 (0.77, 1.00) for healthy dietary pattern (Q3 vs Q1), and 0.89 (0.75, 1.05) for meat dietary pattern (Q4 vs Q1) in the final adjusted model.CONCLUSION:Dietary patterns rich in processed foods were associated with a higher risk of depressive symptoms, and following a traditional Chinese dietary pattern or healthy dietary pattern was associated with a lower risk of depressive symptoms, whereas meat dietary pattern was not associated.

Abstract:This study aimed to identify the interaction of depression and diets on cardiovascular diseases (CVD) incident and death in China and key subpopulations. We included 40,925 participants from the Prospective Urban Rural Epidemiology (PURE)-China cohort which recruited participants aged 35–70 years from 45 urban and 70 rural communities. Depression was measured by the adapted Short-Form (CIDI-SF). The unhealthy diet was considered when the score of Alternative Healthy Eating Index was below the lowest tertile. The primary outcome was a composite outcome of incident CVD and all-cause mortality. Cox frailty models were used to examine the associations. During a median follow-up of 11.9 years (IQR: 9.6–12.6 years), depression significantly increased the risk of the composite outcome (HR = 2.00; 95% CI, 1.16–3.27), major CVD (HR = 1.82; 95% CI, 1.48–2.23), and all-cause mortality (HR = 2.21; 95% CI, 1.51–3.24) for the unhealthy diet group, but not for the healthy diet group. The interaction between depression and diet for the composite outcome was statistically significant (RERI = 1.19; 95% CI, 0.66–1.72; AP = 0.42, 95% CI, 0.27–0.61; SI = 3.30, 95% CI, 1.42–7.66; multiplicative-scale = 1.74 95% CI, 1.27–2.39), even in the subgroup and sensitivity analyses. In addition, the intake of vegetable and polyunsaturated fatty acids contributed most to the interaction of diets and depression. Depressive participants should focus on healthy diets, especially vegetables and polyunsaturated fatty acids, to avoid premature death and CVD.

The presence of antibodies was tested by the tanned red cell technique. Association between physical activity and sedentary behavior and depression in US adults with cardiovascular disease: NHANES 2007-2016

Abstract:Background: Previous studies reported the effect of physical activity (PA) or sedentary behavior (SB) on increasing occurrence of depression in patients with cardiovascular disease, leading to a higher risk of adverse clinical outcomes. However, the association between the combination of PA and SB and depression in patients with cardiovascular disease remained unstudied. Methods: Patients with cardiovascular disease (aged ≥18 years) who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2007 to 2016. Multivariable logistic regression was used to investigate the association between PA, SB, and depression. Results: Among the 2585 patients (mean age 64.43 years; 54.65 % male) in this study, the prevalence of depression was 16.40 %. After adjustment for age, gender, race, education level, marital status, poverty income ratio, employment status, smoking, alcohol use, BMI, hypertension, and number of cardiovascular diseases, depression was negatively associated with higher PA (adjusted OR = 0.567, 95 % CI 0.403, 0.799) and positively associated with higher SB (adjusted OR = 1.472, 95 % CI 1.089, 1.990), respectively. The risk of depression associated with higher PA and lower SB was significantly lower (adjusted OR = 0.464, 95 % CI 0.307, 0.702) compared to those with lower PA but higher SB. Limitations: This was a cross-sectional study with limited ability to make causal inferences. Conclusions: Our findings indicate that patients with higher PA and lower SB have a lower risk of depression than those with low PA levels and high SB levels. Moving more and sitting less is a potential preventive measure against depression in patients with cardiovascular disease.

Abstract:Background Ultraprocessed food (UPF) consumption has been associated with depression risk, but its association with depression persistence is unclear. Objective The objective of this study was to evaluate the association of UPF consumption with depression persistence and incidence. Design The Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil) is a multicenter prospective cohort study with three waves (2008-2010; 2012-2014; 2017-2019). Baseline percentage of energy from UPF, measured using a food frequency questionnaire, was divided into quartiles. Participants/Setting Civil servants aged 35 to 74 years old at baseline were included in ELSA-Brasil. Participants with Parkinson's disease, dementia, stroke history, extreme energy intake, and missing dietary or depression data at baseline were excluded. Main outcome measures Depression was based on the Clinical Interview Schedule-Revised (CIS-R), depression persistence on depression status at each wave and depression incidence on time to first depression diagnosis. Statistical analyses performed Clustering large applications algorithm, multinomial logistic regression, Cox proportional-hazard models, and partition substitution model were performed. Results Among 13,870 participants free from depression at baseline, 731 (5.3%) had depression after eight years of follow-up. Participants in cluster 1 did not have depression in any wave, in cluster 2 had depression in one wave, and in cluster 3 had persistent depression in two or more waves. Compared to the 1st quartile of UPF consumption, participants in quartiles 2, 3, and 4 had a 1.30 (95%CI=1.29; 1.31), 1.39 (95%CI=1.38; 1.40) and 1.58 (95%CI=1.56; 1.60) higher odds of persistent depression (p=0.019), respectively. Compared to the 1st UPF quartile, participants in quartiles 3 and 4 had a 1.32 (95%CI=1.07; 1.64) and 1.30 (95%CI=1.04; 1.61) higher risk of incident depression (p=0.017), respectively. Substituting 5%, 10%, and 20% of UPF with unprocessed/minimally processed foods and culinary ingredients was associated with a 6%, 11%, and 22% decreased depression incidence, respectively. Conclusion Higher consumption of UPF at baseline was associated with higher odds of persistent depression and higher risk of incident depression over eight years of follow-up.
