Abstract:This study investigates the impact of digital financial inclusion, energy transition, and diversification on achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Climate Change Conference (COP26) targets in the context of emerging seven economies (E-7). The SDGs include objectives related to sustainable energy consumption, the availability of sustainable energy, economic growth, sustainable development through technology, and climate change actions. This research employs novel econometric panel quantile regression and ordinary least square methods for benchmark estimations and pooled mean group for causality analysis. The empirical results indicate that energy transition and diversification, technological innovation, and foreign direct investment negatively correlate with CO 2 emissions across all quantiles. Conversely, digital finance inclusion, energy consumption, and economic growth are the primary contributors to the environmental deterioration in the E-7 region. The PMG causality findings demonstrate a feedback effect for the indicators. Furthermore, our results are robust to alternative measures by Augmented Mean Group (AMG) and Common Correlated Effect Mean Group (CCEMG), which may assist policymakers in developing long- and short-term environmental protection initiatives. Based on the outcomes, we suggest that strategies to reduce carbon emissions and achieve the SDGs and COP26 targets should prioritize sustainable energy, and policymakers should enhance incentives for inclusive green funding. The findings recommend a comprehensive policy framework through which E-7 states may proceed toward reaching the SDGs (7-8-9-11-12 and 13) and COP26 commitments.

Abstract:Digitalization has emerged as a crucial factor in reducing pollution and holds significant potential for facilitating the transition to a low-carbon economy. Nevertheless, the environmental impact of digitalization hinges on the strategies for collaboration with various economic actors and, as a result, their engagement with digitalization. In light of this, the present study seeks to examine the externality effect of digitalization on green innovation, renewable energy, and financial development in relation to environmental sustainability. The analysis employs the System Generalized Method of Moments (SYS-GMM) for 36 OECD countries over the period of 2000–2018. The empirical findings indicate that digitalization, green innovation, renewable energy, and financial development substantially promote environmental sustainability. Moreover, the interaction between digitalization, green innovation, renewable energy utilization, and financial development enhances the ecological footprint-mitigating effect of digitalization. In view of these results, merging digitalization and environmental policies may yield more robust outcomes and improved environmental quality compared to implementing a single policy in isolation.

Abstract:The paper investigates how financial technology might help countries promote renewable energy and reach the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is generally agreed that FinTech (financial technology) has the ability to help achieve the SDGs by 2030 and promote a sustainable society through technology-driven solutions. The financial sector has launched greener investment options in order to mobilize substantial financial resources towards climate neutrality in the coming decade. To achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and the goals set forth in the Paris Climate Agreement, however, this procedure must be accelerated. With the use of the innovative "quantile-on-quantile (QQ)" technique, this study uses the data of top FinTech economies for the period 1990–2020 and provides country-specific insights into the relationship between FinTech and renewable energy. Using quantile causality analysis, we may identify the direction of causality between these variables at the observed extremes. An extensive long-term relationship between FinTech and renewable energy was found in all countries. The leading FinTech economies show a positive association between the two at most quantiles, and a bidirectional causality relationship is seen across significant quantiles. This highlights the considerable yet variable impact FinTech policies have on renewable energy and vice versa in these innovative economies. These results highlight the connection between growing FinTech and promoting a green transition to further Sustainable Development Goals and provide useful insight for policy formulation.

Abstract:Understanding the complex socio-economic factors that impact climate change is crucial for developing strategies to reduce their negative environmental impacts. Therefore, the present study explores the association that exists among green finance, digital transformation, and consumption-based carbon emissions, with a specific focus on selected OECD economies from 1995 to 2020. In this study, we have divided digital transformation into two categories, namely digital technology exploration and digital technology readiness. The results of the investigation underscore the key role of green finance in limiting carbon emissions and highlight the role of digital technology readiness in boosting the quality of the environment. In contrast, digital technology exploration positively influences and enhances carbon emissions in OECD economies. Furthermore, the findings also indicate that exports reduce carbon emissions, while imports and economic growth are significantly associated with an increase in carbon emissions. The findings of this study have significant policy implications, advocating for a comprehensive strategy to promote green finance, encourage digital transformation, and support environmentally friendly organizations.

Abstract:Achieving sustainable development targets requires major changes in the existing economic structure and a transition from a pollution‐intensive energy system to a clean one. The role of the digital economy (DE) in this regard has received much attention in recent eras. However, there is little literature investigating the relationship between the DE and the energy transition in the presence of technological innovation. This study's aim, grounded in the sustainability agenda, is to explore the possible impact of DE and technological innovation on the energy transition for the BRICS nations from 2003 to 2021. Using the most recent Moments Quantile Regression method, the results reveal that the DE can contribute significantly to achieving SDG‐7 by promoting energy transition. While technological innovation does not significantly influence the energy transition. Moreover, economic development is hindering the energy transition in the BRICS countries. Several alternative estimation methods have been applied to confirm the robustness of the results. The empirical results conclude that governments should build digital infrastructure and encourage innovation in the energy sector by supporting energy‐related patents. The detailed policy implications are presented in the study.

Abstract:Energy &Environment, Ahead of Print. Digitalization has emerged as a key player in reducing pollution and fostering a shift towards a low-carbon economy. However, its effectiveness in enhancing environmental sustainability hinges on the collaborative efforts of various economic stakeholders and their engagement with digital technologies. This research delves into the role of digitalization in advancing green innovation and facilitating the transition to renewable energy, focusing on its impact on environmental sustainability. Analyzing data from leading Asian countries from 1990 to 2022 through Panel quantile regression, the study reveals that digitalization significantly boosts environmental sustainability with green innovation and energy transition efforts. The findings highlight that green innovation is critical in diminishing ecological degradation, with notable effects (−0.085%, −0.104%, and −0.028%) across different quantiles, decreasing resource consumption and fostering sustainability. Furthermore, the shift towards renewable energy contributes to a cleaner environment by supporting decarbonization initiatives, thereby lessening environmental degradation. The analysis demonstrates that digitalization (−0.002%, −0.015%, −0.006%) curtails environmental degradation across various quantiles. Importantly, digitalization's interaction with green innovation and renewable energy acts synergistically to curb ecological degradation in Asia's leading economies. The study suggests that policy integration involving digitalization and green innovation could yield more excellent environmental benefits than the isolated impact of digitalization. By enhancing efficiency, optimizing resource utilization, encouraging the uptake of renewable energy, and fostering sustainable practices, the combined effect of digitalization and green initiatives offers substantial prospects for reducing environmental degradation. Consequently, policy frameworks that incorporate digitalization can significantly improve environmental quality.

Abstract:Examining the relationship between green energy, the digital economy, and economic advancement in eighteen South American nations, the study used the Principal Component Factor (PCF) approach. A Green Energy Transition Index (GETI) and a Digital Economy Index (DEI) were developed as a consequence of this study. Confirmation of the large influence of switching to green energy on economic development and environmental sustainability is provided by the research's use of Fixed Effect Panel Threshold Regression (FEPTR) analysis. In today's global industrial value chain, hydrocarbons are the main source of energy. As a result, it hastened the decarburization of the world energy system to lower the noteworthy quantities of CO2 emissions from these sources. All quantile groups' economic development is strongly impacted by the digital economy and the move to green energy, according to the Methodology of instants of quantile regression (MMQR). The only element that positively impacts environmental sustainability across all quantile groups is the switch to Green energy. Reducing CO2 emissions and increasing economic development are characteristics of the low-quantile group. While the median quantile group does see a decrease in carbon dioxide emissions, economic growth remains stagnant.
The key role of renewable energy consumption, technological innovation and institutional quality in formulating the SDG policies for emerging economies: Evidence from quantile regression

Abstract:Since the commencement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Emerging Seven economies have faced many problems in achieving the objectives of SDGs, while environmental degradation is one of the foremost issues for them. In this study, researchers reconsidered the technological policies for these economies. For this purpose, we addressed the problems of clean and affordable energy, sustained economic growth, and institutional quality to address the issue of environmental degradation. In doing so, we have investigated the influence of renewable energy consumption, institutional quality, technological innovations and economic growth on carbon emissions using feasible generalized least square (FGLS), panel quantile regression (PQR), and variance decomposition analysis from 1996 to 2018. The empirical results of FGLS depict that a 1% rise in renewable energy consumption, technological innovations, and institutional quality reduces carbon emissions by 0.144%, 0.189%, and 0.257%, respectively. In contrast, a 1% rise in economic growth and population increases emissions by 0.961% and 1.510%, respectively. A similar outcome is echoed in PQR; however, their impact differs across lower, medium, and higher quantiles. Particularly, the influence of technology and renewable energy consumption is highest at higher emission quantiles, while the influence of institutional quality is higher for medium emissions quantiles. These outcomes reinforce the recommendation of an SDG-oriented policy framework, including renewable energy transition (SDG-7), climate action (SDG-13), technological innovations (SDG-9), government institutions (SDG-16), and economic growth (SDG-8).

Abstract:Transportation is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, the apparent solution to this environmental degradation parameter is to green the transport sector to ensure environment-friendly vehicles' operation and avoid poisonous gases in different countries. In light of this context, we develop a green transportation index and scrutinize its role in the environmental degradation proxied by the ecological footprint in the case of the top 10 energy transition countries covering data from 1990 to 2018. We implement a novel and sophisticated econometric technique for data analysis, quantiles via moments, due to potential heterogeneity in the variables and panel units. Our results confirm a monotonic combative profile of green transportation on the ecological footprint in reducing environmental degradation. In addition, the control variables, i.e., innovation, domestic investment, and institutional quality, are conducive to conserving environmental quality by decreasing the ecological footprint. However, urbanization still increases the ecological footprint and environmental degradation in these economies. Our investigated results are robust across the DH panel causality test. Therefore, we propose some important policy implications regarding green transportation exploitation to ease the ecological footprint for a sustainable environment.

Abstract:It is an undeniable fact that the digital economy and green financing are persistently gaining global attention as effective tools for achieving rapid economic growth and development. However, the environmental effects of these indicators are just evolving, leaving the research community with insufficient policies for harnessing the much-anticipated sustainability agenda. Hence, this research provides the first empirical evidence of the impacts of eco-digitalization and green financing on the sustainable environment in selected Middle East and North African countries from 1995 to 2019. The empirical model considers the roles of multinational corporations, renewable and nonrenewable energy, economic growth, and population growth as covariates models based on the STIRPAT framework. The stated hypotheses are verified based on Cross-Sectionally Augmented Mean Group, Mean Group, Common Correlated Mean Group, and Panel Quantile Regression. Findings show that from eco-digitalization, green financing, and renewable energy drive sustainable environment agenda. On the flip side, nonrenewable energy, economic growth, and population growth largely deter delivering on the blueprint. The estimated results are corroborated by findings from panel quantiles regression. Furthermore, the panel causality uncovers the existence of bidirectional and unidirectional causality in the estimated model. Policy insights that support the pathways toward sustainability in MENA economies are suggested based on the findings.

Abstract:Since the beginning of the twenty-first century, the rapid development of modern technologies has brought unprecedented social prosperity to mankind as technologies penetrate every sector of the economy. These technologies have given a new dimension to the energy sector. The key purpose of this study is to investigate the crucial impact of technological revolutions, namely, smart grids, smart devices, financial innovations, and environmental innovations, on greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs). To this end, the study utilized data from European, Asian, Middle Eastern, and African countries and employed first- and second-generation methods, such as DOLS, FMOLS, and CS-ARDL models. The research shows that smart grids are the only factor in reducing GHGs, regardless of geographic division. Hence, linking smart grid resources to climate change goals requires short-term deployment strategies with a clear long-term vision and the fundamental goal of transforming the power structure into a net zero-emission system. The study also demonstrates that the emergence of ICT in electricity consumption has not yet reached a level that can promote environmental excellence. The study documented the critical role of financial innovation and environmental innovation in addressing environmental degradation.

Abstract:The top twenty carbon-emitting nations contribute around 80% to global CO 2 emissions. The transformation of business operations, products, and services through establishing a digital economy (DGE) might help these nations to accomplish Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and carbon neutrality. However, digitalization poses certain direct and indirect effects on the environment, and also emissions and digitalization levels vary across nations. Further, the decoupling of economic growth and emissions makes it very challenging to reduce emissions without decreasing economic growth. Against this background, this research assesses the impacts of DGE and financial expansion (FE) on emissions in the top twenty emitters by considering the direct effect of DGE as well as its indirect effects through economic growth. The newly proposed method of moment quantile regressions (MM-QR) is adopted to unveil the associations between variables by accounting for distributional and heterogeneous variations in variables from 2003 to 2019. The novel findings demonstrate that DGE significantly boosts emissions. However, the indirect effects of DGE on emissions through economic growth reduce emissions and thereby, stimulate environmental quality. Interestingly, both direct and indirect effects of DGE are noticeable only from quantiles 6 to 9 and these impacts exhibit an increasing trend. FE decreases CO 2 and uplifts environmental quality in all quantiles without much variation. Economic growth (GR) augments CO 2 ; however, the magnitude of its effects reduces from lower to upper quantiles. Population density (PDN) alleviates environmental deterioration and its effects intensify from lower to upper quantiles. Afterward, the Driscoll-Kraay (DK) regression test confirmed the results of the MM-QR. Based on these novel results, a policy framework is proposed to reduce electronic waste and accelerate digital penetration in different sectors of the economy to enhance resource-saving and achieve carbon neutrality.

Abstract:: In recent years, policymakers, international energy, and environmental organizations have posited that advancements in information and communication technology, digitalization, renewable energy, and financial development can facilitate a smoother and quicker transition toward a greener and smarter global economy. This study employs the Panel Vector Auto-Regression model to evaluate this assertion across the top ten most polluted countries from 1995 to 2018. The empirical findings indicate that while individual indicators of information and communication technology have mixed impacts, the utilization of a digitalization-based principal component analysis index provides strong evidence of digitalization's positive effect on environmental quality. Additionally, the results suggest that renewable energy and the economic complexity index also contribute to environmental improvement. Therefore, the empirical evidence underscores the significant role of digitalization, information and communication technology, and renewable energy in enhancing environmental sustainability in the most polluted countries. Moreover, the findings indicate that although a financial development shock initially worsens environmental quality in the first year, it leads to improvements from the second year onwards. These empirical insights offer various policy recommendations regarding information and communication technology, digitalization, renewable energy, and financial development, which could support the achievement of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.

Abstract:In the era of rapid technological advancements and rising environmental concerns, the efficient use of mineral resources can significantly enhance sustainable economic growth and address climate change issues. Therefore, this study examines the role of mineral resources, digital transformation, and green finance for sustainable development in OECD countries. Additionally, this study has taken important variables like renewable energy, imports, exports, and GDP to have a comprehensive overview. Using the method of moment and bootstrap quantile regression analysis, the results indicate that green finance and digital transformation reduce environmental degradation. Natural resources decrease carbon emissions at lower quantiles but increase them at higher levels. The findings indicate that renewable energy and exports decrease carbon emissions, while imports and economic growth increase emissions. This study emphasizes the importance of green finance and digital transformation in guiding OECD countries towards sustainable economic growth that also conserves the environment.

Abstract:Science Progress, Volume 107, Issue 3, July-September 2024. ObjectivesThis paper investigates the role of digital finance in promoting environmental sustainability within a group of 52 developing economies from 2010 to 2019. Specifically, it examines whether digital finance effectively contributes reducing CO2 emissions in these nations.MethodsThis paper is a quantitative study which employs the IV-GMM (instrumental variable generalized methods of moment) approach that tackles any potential endogeneity. Furthermore, to ensure robustness of results, this paper also utilizes different measures of financial development.ResultsEstimation results from this study reveal the presence of inverted U-shaped relationship between digital finance and CO2 emissions. This suggests that the beneficial effects of digital finance may take time to materialize. Additionally, this research also records the presence of the Environmental Kuznets Curve and a significant impact of renewable energy, trade openness, financial development, urbanization, and population on CO2 emissions.ConclusionsIt can be concluded that it may take time for digital finance to become beneficial to the environment. Therefore, in addition to digital finance, countries should also adopt other measures simultaneously (use of renewable energy, combination between digital finance and financial development).

Abstract:This study examines the extent to which green energy vectoring renewable energy and nuclear energy moderates the effects of natural resource dependence and digitalization on environmental sustainability (measured by carbon emissions per capita and ecological footprint) in selected emerging seven (E7) countries. The study considers the intervening roles of financial development, economic growth, and population growth from 1996 to 2019. The verification of the empirical hypotheses anchors on advanced estimating techniques comprising cross-sectional dependence autoregressive distributed lag and augmented mean group. Results reveal that natural resource dependence and financial development hinder the attainment of environmental sustainability by inducing significant rise in carbon emissions per capita and ecological footprint. Conversely, digitalization promotes the strides toward environmental sustainability by significantly mitigating the surge in both pollutants. The direct and indirect effects of green energy are observed to sufficiently promote environmental sustainability. Moreover, while economic growth in the selected economies displays a significant level of support for sustainability targets, population growth portrays otherwise. Besides, the country-level analyses anchored on Fully Modified OLS show that natural resource dependence significantly hinders sustainability targets in Russia alone. More so, the existence of EKC finds support in Brazil and Mexico. Policy insights emanate from the findings.

Abstract:The goal of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has shifted the attention of all countries towards more environmentally sustainable concerns. This study estimates the role of natural resources and green technologies on energy transition and CO2 emission (the key indicators of sustainable development) under the moderating effect of fintech in resource abundant countries. The data spanning over 2000 to 2021 period is collected from the World Development Indicators (WDI) and OECD database and to conduct empirical estimation, the study uses Fully Modified OLS (FMOLS), Dynamic OLS (DOLS) and Method of Moments Quantile Regression (MMQR) estimation methods. The findings of FMOLS and DOLS estimations established that there is significant negative effect of green technologies and fintech on CO2 emission and significant and positive effect on energy transition. In contrast, natural resources exert positive effect on both CO2 emission and energy transition in selected countries. Introducing fintech as moderator does not significantly impact natural resources and CO2 emission and energy transition nexus, but it significantly and positively moderates the relationship of green technologies with CO2 emission and energy transition. MMQR estimation also establishes the similar results with significance varying at different quantile levels. The study recommends the concerned governments to facilitate more investment in research and development in green technologies and fintech industries to promote creative innovations.

Exploring the dynamic connectedness among energy transition and its drivers: Understanding the moderating role of global geopolitical risk

Abstract:The recent Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2022 progress report shows the presence of a possible policy lacuna at the global level in achieving the objectives of SDG 7. The recent COP26 discourse and the academic literature identify the Energy Transition as the possible mean to achieve this objective. Now, realizing the Energy Transition requires a conducive policy climate within the economies, and this conduciveness comes from the financial, technological, and the broad policy dimensions. The existing policy discourse and academic literature show that the Green Financing, Green Technologies, and the Environmental Policies might be the possible drivers to achieve this Energy Transition. Nevertheless, the exposure of a nation to the Geopolitical Risks arising out of the global connectedness of nations might be a detriment to the energy transition process. Increase in the risk profiles and decline in the attractiveness of the energy transition projects might create a roadblock for the policy drivers of energy transition to exert their potential impacts. The present study aims at developing a policy framework by analyzing the dynamic association between the energy transition and its drivers, while allowing Geopolitical Risk to moderate the association. The study is conducted for January 1, 2016 to October 31, 2022, and has used a battery of advanced econometric methods (Quantile Vector Autoregression, Cross-Quantilogram, Wavelet Quantile Correlation, and Non-Parametric Granger-Causality tests). The results show that Green Financing, Green Technologies, and the Environmental Policies have positive impacts on Energy Transition, while Geopolitical Risk is found to have negative impact. The policy framework is designed in a phase-wise manner, so that the impacts of the Geopolitical Risk can be isolated, and the positive impacts of Energy Transition drivers can be maximized. The policy framework is made by keeping the attainment of SDG 7 in its core.

Abstract:There has been a worldwide upsurge in environmental movements. The planet's ecosystem has degraded significantly over the years. The disturbing effects of environmental deterioration on Earth's physical geography cause concern among those concerned about the planet's future. While previous research has looked at various ecological elements, recent attention has turned to digital change and the need to make the most of it. Eco-efficiency is a critical component in reducing carbon output (CO2). Reaching carbon neutrality goals, getting carbon peaking, and achieving high-quality economic growth, digital transformation, and eco-efficiency are intense endeavors. A panel data set spanning G-15 economies from 1995 to 2022, this article examines the effects of digital transformation, eco-efficiency, and the food supply chain on carbon emissions. The unit root test established the stationarity of all indicators at the initial difference. In addition to Pedroni and Kao cointegration methods, the panel study uses ADF, DF-GLS, and PP unit root test, as well as dynamic ordinary least square (DOLS) and fully FMOLS stands for panel adjusted regular least square. Approaches for robustness: the present research additionally uses panel quantile regression to examine the effect of factors. In order to promote environmental sustainability and minimize CO2 emissions, the findings highlighted the need for eco-efficiency, digital transformation, the food supply chain, and government policy. On the other hand, natural resource exploitation and energy transition worsen environmental quality and raise CO2 emissions in Great economies. We use the DH panel causality test to assess the factors' correlation further. Furthermore, carbon emissions (CO2) are affected in one way by changes in the energy sector and the food supply chain and in another by changes in eco-efficiency, digital transformation, and government policy. Environmental deterioration has many causes, and this study's results may help shed light on those reasons while suggesting solutions.
