Abstract:The knowledge of the effect of aerobic starvation on the functional bacterial activities and community structures is important for the recovery of nutrient removal in activated sludge system. Four aerobic starvation processes (3, 7, 14 and 30days) for nitrifiers and polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) were studied. The results showed that nitrifiers could utilize the released ammonium for growth during the first 7days of the aerobic starvation, and then gradually decayed. In the recovery period, the slower recovery ability of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) than ammonium-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) contributed to the nitrite accumulation. Besides, the sequential consumption of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), glycogen and the utilization of polyphosphate (poly-P) in PAOs provided the energy to maintain bacterial metabolic activity. High-throughput sequencing analysis revealed that aerobic starvation had substantial impacts on the succession of microbial community, and the majority of original dominant species within the phylum Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes declined while Firmicutes increased.
The Anammox Process at Typical Feast-Famine States: Reactor Performance, Sludge Activity and Microbial Community

Abstract:Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) is a chemolithotrophic bioprocess which has been widely applied in the treatment of different concentrations of ammonium-containing wastewaters. However, there is less attention on the problem that the instantaneous growth rate (or metabolic rate) and equilibrium growth rate were un-synchronous for anammox bacteria due to their long generation time and self-immobilization of the granular sludge which could lead to the inaccurate estimation. In this study, the anammox process was firstly divided to four typical feast-famine (starvation, satiation, tolerance and poison) states based on the combination of both off-site and in-situ anammox reaction kinetics. Then, four respective lab-scale bioreactors were operated at each state for over a year to achieve stable anammox performance. The results showed that the nitrogen removal rates of bioreactors were 0.53, 2.24, 9.30 and 12.96 kg N/(m(3).d); and the specific anammox activities of granular sludge were 188.94 (48%), 313.29 (79%), 397.50 (100%) and 198.60 (50%) mg N/(g VSS.d) which could reflect the reactivity of each feast-famine state. The stable microbial communities of bioreactors were cultured and analyzed, whose species diversity went down with the decrease of Shannon and ACE index. The relative abundance of anammox bacteria increased from 11% to 57% from starvation to poison state. Candidatus Brocadia/Nitrospira, Candidatus Kuenenia and Brocadiaceae unclassified were revealed to be the distinctive functional bacteria, which could serve as the indicator of each state. The setting up of the typical feast-famine states could be regarded as the landmark to help the design, control and optimization of anammox process.
Optimizing nitrogen removal in PD/A reactors: Effects of influent composition and temperature on system stability and microbial dynamics

Abstract:This study investigates the performance and microbial community dynamics in two partial denitrification/anammox (PD/A) reactors with different influent wastewater compositions (differ in the presence/absence of NO2-) subjected to a controlled temperature gradient reduction from mesophilic (30 °C) to room temperature (20.92 °C) over 76 days. Two lab-scale PD/A reactors (R1 and R2), both operated with a total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) concentrations of 70 mg N/L. R1 maintained a NH4+/NO2-/NO3- ratio of 3:3:1 and a COD/NO3- ratio of 2.0, while R2 had an NH4+/NO3- ratio of 3:4, and COD/NO3- ratios of 2.0 and 2.5. Our findings reveal distinct responses to the temperature transitions: the optimization of the NH4+/NO2-/NO3- ratio at 3:3:1 facilitated more stable nitrogen removal as temperatures decreased. This stability can be attributed to the enhanced synchronization between anammox bacteria and denitrifiers, promoting a balanced bioconversion process that is less susceptible to temperature-induced disruptions. Notably, the specific anammox activity (SAA) in both reactors declined linearly with the decrease in temperature, but the relative abundance of anammox bacteria (Ca. Brocadia) in R1 increased from 2.1 % to 9.7 %. Furthermore, the percentage of anammox-related key genes was higher in R1 than in R2, suggesting a microbial mechanism underlying the stable performance of R1. These results underscore the significant impact of influent nitrogen composition on PD/A performance amid temperature gradients and highlight the critical role of optimizing influent ratios for maintaining efficient nitrogen removal. This study offers valuable insights into enhancing the stability of PD/A systems under varying thermal conditions.

Abstract:The coupling partial denitrification and anammox (PD/A) is a promising technology for deep-level nitrogen removal, and the quickly effective startup remains a huge challenge in real application. In this study, the stability of nitrite (NO 2 - -N) accumulation was investigated in the PD sequential batch reactor (PSBR), and the nitrogen removal performance in response to nitrogen loading rate (NLR) was compared in another independent anammox SBR (ASBR), where the combined PD/A operation was subsequently carried out based on the optimal operating conditions. In the PSBR, nitrate removal efficiency (NRE) maintained around 89–90% with a mean nitrate-to-nitrite transformation ratio (NTR) of 84.43%, and the total proportion of functional bacteria (e.g., Terrimonas , norank_f_A4b , Ellin6067 , Defluviicoccus , etc) accounted for 40.98% after long-term acclimation. In the ASBR, increased NLR (0.22 → 0.70 kgN/(m 3 ·d)) depressed the anammox activity owing to the sludge disintegration and adverse nitrogen contribution, however, the dominant Candidatus_Brocadia enriched from 0.50% to 2.05% and realized the efficient retention of functional bacteria, which also laid a good foundation for the rapid startup of PD/A process. As NLR controlled around 0.18 - 0.25 kgN/(m 3 ·d), the total nitrogen removal (Re TN ) climbed from 33.88% to 98% with anammox contribution soaring up to 65%, since the higher tight-bound extracellular polymeric substances (T-EPS) production and protein/polysaccharide (PN/PS) ratio accelerated the re-formation of anammox granular sludge. In the end, the potential significances and challenges of PD/A process were further summarized for the mainstream wastewater treatment.

Improving Efficiency and Stability of Anammox through Sequentially Coupling Nitritation and Denitritation in a Single-Stage Bioreactor

Abstract:This study developed an innovative process for the treatment of low-ammonium wastewater in a single-stage bioreactor over 250 days. Partial nitritation-anammox and partial denitritation-anammox (PN/A-PDN/A) processes were combined under aerobic/anoxic operation, and a high nitrogen removal efficiency (94.6%) was obtained at a nitrogen removal rate of 0.54 kg N m–3 d–1 and a chemical oxygen demand to total inorganic nitrogen (COD/TIN) ratio of 0.28. Mass balance analysis identified anammox as the dominant nitrogen removal pathway, achieving 88.3% nitrogen loss. The abundance of anammox bacteria and their bioactivity rapidly increased and were effectively maintained, as indicated by qPCR and bioactivity tests. The PN/A-PDN/A process provided two pathways of nitrite production for anammox, which favored the enrichment of anammox bacteria and stable processing. In addition, the enrichment of anammox bacteria was promoted by selective floc discharge since anammox bacteria are mainly located in granules (relative abundance of 29.64 ± 7.89%). Competitive organisms (including heterotrophic bacteria and nitrite oxidizing bacteria), enriched in flocs, were washed out. Abstract:The Partial Denitrification-Anammox (PD/A) process established a low-consumption, efficient and sustainable pathway for complete nitrogen removal, which is of great interest to the industry. Rapid initiation and stable operation of the PD/A systems were the main issues limiting its engineering application in wastewater nitrogen removal. A PD/A system was initiated in a continuous stirred-tank reactors (CSTRs) in the presence of low concentration of organic matter, and the effects of organic matter types and COD/NO3--N ratios on the performance of the PD/A system, and microbial community characteristics were explored. The results showed that low concentrations of organic matter could promote the rapid initiation of the Anammox process and then the strategy of gradually replacing NO2--N with NO3--N could successfully initiate the PD/A system at 70 days. The type of organic matter had a significant effect on the initiation of the Anammox and the establishment of the PD/A system. Compared to glucose, sodium acetate was more favorable for rapid start-up and the synergy among microorganisms, and organic matter was lower, with an optimal COD/NO3--N ratio of 3.0. Microorganisms differed in their sensitivity to environmental factors. The relative abundance of Planctomycetota and Proteobacteria in R2 was 51 %, with the presence of three typical anammox bacteria, Candidatus_Brocadia, Candidatus_Kuenenia, and Candidatus_Jettenia in the system. This study provides a new strategy for the rapid initiation and stable operation of the PD/A process.

Abstract:Partial denitrification (PD) can stably supply nitrite (NO 2 – ) for Anammox, and their combined processes have sprung up in recent decades. However, behind this prosperity, the existing starting methods still restrict the establishment of PD systems to months. This study proposed a novel PD start-up method, "anoxic starvation treatment", and explored its feasibility and effectiveness. Results showed that denitrifying nitrite accumulation immediately occurred after 5-day starvation, and the nitrate-to-nitrite transformation ratio at 20th min was kept at ∼72 % within the 9-day normal operation. During starvation, it was essential to regularly evaluate the NO 2 – accumulation potential via assaying denitrifying activity, which helped set the duration of starving treatment. Besides, additional starvation treatment during normal operations could also improve the NO 2 – accumulation performance by relieving further NO 2 – reduction. After three operation rounds, the high-throughput sequencing analysis showed that Exiguobacterium became the dominant genus (∼40 %). However, Thauera , the widely recognized candidate for PD, merely shared 3.57 % in relative abundance, raising speculation about whether Thauera is a promoter or beneficiary.

Abstract:Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) process has been successfully applied in the nitrogen removal from high-strength wastewaters. However, little information is available for its treatment of low-strength wastewaters. In this study, a Famine Anammox NItrogen Removal (FANIR) system was developed to investigate the effect of long-term substrate starvation at the low nitrogen concentration (the influent total nitrogen was set at ∼1 mg/L). The results showed that the response of FANIR system to the starvation stress took on two phases: the functional decline phase (0-54 day) and the functional stabilization phase (62-116 day). Over the two phases, the Nitrogen Removal Rate (NRR) of anammox reactor firstly dropped sharply; and then came to a constant level. The activity and settleability of Anammox Granular Sludge (AnGS) firstly deteriorated seriously, and then stayed in a stable range. The relative abundance of Anaerobic Ammonium Oxidation Bacteria (AnAOB) firstly decreased markedly, and then approached a steady state with the change of dominant genus from Candidatus Brocadia to Candidatus Kuenenia. The abundance of 16S rRNA gene and hzs gene of AnAOB and their transcription level firstly declined largely as well, and then became stable with the 16S rRNA gene, hzs gene, 16S rRNA and hzs-mRNA of AnAOB at 23.9%, 9.1%, 1.2% and 1.0% of the initial value, respectively. To our delight, the behavior of FANIR system in the functional stabilization phase was proved indeed consistent with the feature for AnAOB to enter the dormancy state. These findings are helpful to understand the physiology of AnAOB over the starvation stress and to promote the extension of anammox process to the treatment of low-strength wastewaters.

Abstract:Anammox is an environmental-friendly and cost-effective technology for nitrogen removal. This study provides the nitrogen removal profiles, physiological traits of anammox bacteria culture under the substrate deficiency conditions at the optimal cultivation temperature 35°C. The determined period of starvation tolerance was 4 weeks in the absence of nitrite, 5 weeks in the absence of ammonium, as well as 7 weeks for the absence of these two substrates at 36°C, pH 7-8 and anaerobic conditions. The physiological traits of bacteria consortium were identified through flow cytometry (FCM) analysis, and the ordinal change of increased RNA synthesizing amounts, phosphatidylserine exposure and bacteria death occurred under starvation stress. In addition, the starvation induced the increased protein content in extracellular polymeric substances and the poorer bacteria settling capacity. This study helps to develop a better understanding of anammox process in engineering environment.
Comparison of endogenous metabolism during long-term anaerobic starvation of nitrite/nitrate cultivated denitrifying phosphorus removal sludges

Abstract:Denitrifying phosphorus removal (DPR) by denitrifying phosphorus-accumulating organisms (DPAOs) is a promising approach for reducing energy and carbon usage. However, influent fluctuations or interruptions frequently expose the DPAOs biomass to starvation conditions, reducing biomass activity and amount, and ultimately degrading the performance of DPR. Therefore, a better understanding of the endogenous metabolism and recovery ability of DPAOs is urgently required. In the present study, anaerobic starvation (12 days) and recovery were investigated in nitrite- and nitrate-cultivated DPAOs at 20 ± 1 °C. The cell decay rates in nitrite-DPAOs sludges from the end of the anaerobic and aerobic phase were 0.008 day⁻¹ and 0.007 day⁻¹, respectively, being 64% and 68% lower than those of nitrate-DPAOs sludges. Nitrite-DPAOs sludges also recovered more rapidly than nitrate-DPAOs sludge after 12 days of starvation. The maintenance energy of nitrite-DPAOs sludges from the end of the anaerobic and aerobic phase were approximately 31% and 34% lower, respectively, than those of nitrate-DPAOs sludges. Glycogen and polyphosphate (poly-P) sequentially served as the main maintenance energy sources in both nitrite-and nitrate-DPAOs sludges. However, the transformation pathway of the intracellular polymers during starvation differed between them. Nitrate-DPAOs sludge used extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) (mainly polysaccharides) as an additional maintenance energy source during the first 3 days of starvation. During this phase, EPS appeared to contribute to 19-27% of the ATP production in nitrate-DPAOs, but considerably less to the cell maintenance of nitrite-DPAOs. The high resistance of nitrite-DPAOs to starvation might be attributable to frequent short-term starvation and exposure to toxic substances such as nitrite/free nitrous acids in the parent nitrite-fed reactor. The strong resistance of nitrite-DPAOs sludge to anaerobic starvation may be exploited in P removal by shortcut denitrification processes.

Abstract:Mainstream partial nitritation-anammox (PNA) process easily suffers from performance instability and even reactor collapse in application. Thus, it is of great significance to unveil the characteristic of performance recovery, understand the intrinsic mechanism and then propose operational strategy. In this study, we combined long-term reactor operation, batch tests, and metagenomics to reveal the succession of microbial community and functional metabolism variation from system collapse to recovery. Proper aeration control (0.10-0.25 mg O2/L) was critical for performance recovery. It was also found that Candidatus Brocadia became the dominant flora and its abundance increased from 3.5% to 11.0%. Significant enhancements in carbon metabolism and phospholipid biosynthesis were observed during system recovery, and the genes abundance related to signal transduction was dramatically increased. The up-regulation of sdh and suc genes showed the processes of succinate dehydrogenation and succinyl-CoA synthesis might stimulate the production of amino acids and the synthesis of proteins, thereby possibly improving the activity and abundance of AnAOB, which was conducive to the performance recovery. Moreover, the increase in abundance of hzs and hdh genes suggested the enhancement of the anammox process. Changes in the abundance of key genes involved in nitrogen metabolism indicated that nitrogen removal pathway was more diverse after system recovery. The achievement of performance recovery was driven by anammox, nitrification and denitrification coupled with dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium. These results provide deeper insights into the recovery mechanism of PNA system and also provide a potential regulation strategy for the stable operation of the mainstream PNA process.

Abstract:Cell immobilization was used to enrich and retain functional bacteria within partial denitrification-Anammox (PD/A) process to achieve its fast start-up for the first time. To do so, residue sludge and Anammox sludge were immobilized in poly (vinyl alcohol)/sodium alginate (PVA/SA) gel for PD cultivation and Anammox bacteria inoculation, respectively. Stable PD with NO3--N to NO2--N transformation ratio (NTR) of 72.0% was achieved within 13 days at 25 °C and successfully combined with Anammox on 14th day. The hydrous porous PVA/SA gel matrix played the role of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) and thus protected the microbes against low temperature. Satisfactory nitrogen removal rate (NRR) (301.6±6.1 g N/(m3∙d)) was achieved even when temperature decreased to 13 °C. The contribution of nitrogen removal via Anammox was as high as 77.10%. Abundance of Thauera and Candidatus Kuenenia increased from 0.9% and 1.1% to 30.6% and 2.1%, respectively.

Abstract:Recent, partial nitrification/anammox process has received increasing attention in water nitrogen removal. And denitrification process might also play an indispensable role to enhance nitrogen removal performance. In this study, the symbiosis of heterotrophic denitrification bacteria (HDB) and anaerobic ammonium oxidation bacteria (AAOB) was observed in a size-fractioned single-stage partial nitrification/anammox reactor to explore their individual contribution. The reactor was operated in three phases, with different aeration rates (0.6, 0.4, and 0.5 L·min-1) for 73 days. In the third phase, a maximum nitrogen removal efficiency (NRE) of 92.0% was achieved and the nitrogen removal rate (NRR) was 0.498 kg N·m-3·d-1. A high special anammox activity (SAA) of 227.4 mg N·g-1VSS·d-1 was observed in the granules. The specific denitrification activity (SDA) was 82.6 mg N·g-1VSS·d-1 in the flocs, but was only 10.4 mg N·g-1VSS·d-1 in the granules. High-throughput sequencing analysis showed that the AAOB were enriched in granules, whereas the HDB were dominant in the flocs. The results indicated that most of the nitrogen was removed by the granules through partial nitrification/anammox process, and the remaining nitrate was removed by the flocs through heterotrophic denitrification.

Abstract:A partial-denitrification coupling with anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) process (PD/A) in a continuous-flow anoxic/oxic (A/O) biofilm reactor was developed to treat carbon-limited domestic wastewater (ammonia (NH4+-N) of 55 mg/L and chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 148 mg/L in average) for about 200 days operation. Satisfactory NH4+-N oxidation efficiency above 95% was achieved with rapid biofilm formation in the aerobic zone. Notably, nitrite (NO2−-N) accumulation was observed in the anoxic zone, mainly due to the insufficient electron donor for complete nitrate (NO3−-N) reduction. The nitrate-to-nitrite transformation ratio (NTR) achieved was as high as 64.4%. After the inoculation of anammox-enriched sludge to anoxic zones, total nitrogen (TN) removal was significantly improved from 37.3% to 78.0%. Anammox bacteria were effectively retained in anoxic biofilm utilizing NO2−-N produced via the PD approach and NH4+-N in domestic wastewater, with the relative abundance of 5.83% for stable operation. Anammox pathway contributed to TN removal by a high level of 38%. Overall, this study provided a promising method for mainstream nitrogen removal with low energy consumption and organic carbon demand.

Abstract:To overcome the significant challenges associated with nitrite supply and nitrate residues in mainstream anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox)-based processes, this study developed a combined solid-phase denitrification (SPD) and anammox process for low-strength nitrogen removal without the addition of nitrite. The SPD step was performed in a packed-bed reactor containing poly-3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hyroxyvelate (PHBV) prior to employing the anammox granular sludge reactor in the continuous-flow mode. The removal efficiency of total inorganic nitrogen reached 95.7 ± 1.2% under a nitrogen loading rate of 0.18 ± 0.01 kg N·m3·d-1, and it required 1.02 mol of nitrate to remove 1 mol of ammonium nitrogen. The PHBV particles not only served as biofilm carriers for the symbiosis of hydrolytic bacteria (HB) and denitrifying bacteria (DB), but also carbon sources that facilitated the coupling of partial denitrification and anammox in the granules. Metagenomic sequencing analysis indicated that Burkholderiales was the most abundant HB genus in SPD. The metabolic correlations between DB (Betaproteobacteria, Rhodocyclaceae, and Anaerolineae) and anammox bacteria (Candidatus Brocadiac and Kuenenia) in the granules were confirmed through microbial co-occurrence networks analysis and functional gene annotations. Additionally, the genes encoding nitrate reductase (Nap) and nitrite reductase (Nir) in DB primarily facilitated nitrate reduction, thereby supplying nitric oxide to anammox bacteria for subsequent nitrogen removal with hydrazine synthase (Hzs) and hydrazine dehydrogenase (Hdh). The findings provide insights into microbial metabolism within combined SPD and anammox processes, thus advancing the development of mainstream anammox-based processes in engineering applications.

Abstract:Denitrifying phosphorus removal sludge are usually faced with various famine environments in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Endogenous metabolisms under aerobic, anoxic, and anaerobic starved conditions were characterized to investigate their impact on survival and activities of denitrifying polyphosphate accumulating organisms (DPAOs). DPAOs utilized intracellular polymers to survive and presented diverse consumed priorities of PHA types under various starvations. The biomass decay rate was approximately 2.7 and 1.7 times lower for aerobic condition than for anoxic and anaerobic conditions owing to the maximum maintenance energy requirement for aerobic condition (68.6mmol/C-molVSS ATP). During short-term starvations, significant activity decay for anaerobic starved sludge was attributed to its distinctive endogenous metabolisms. For long-term starvations, the higher amounts and preponderant type of PHA (PHB) reserve favored to the greater DPAO activities for anoxic starved sludge. The results show that anoxic condition may be an implementable strategy for maintaining denitrifying phosphorus removal performance in WWTPs.

Abstract:The investigation of partial denitrification/anammox (PD/anammox) processes was conducted under autotrophic (N-S cycle) and mixotrophic (N-S-C cycle) conditions over 180 days. Key findings revealed the remarkable capability of SO42--dependent systems to produce NO2- effectively, supporting anaerobic NH4+ oxidation. Additionally, SO42- served as an additional electron acceptor in sulfate reduction ammonium oxidation (SRAO). Increasing influent SO42- concentrations notably improved ammonia utilization rates (AUR) and NH4+ and total nitrogen (TN) utilization efficiencies, peaking at 57% for SBR1 and nearly 100% for SBR2. Stoichiometric analysis showed a 7.5-fold increase in AUR (SRAO and anammox) in SBR1 following SO42- supplementation. However, the analysis for SBR2 indicated a shift towards SRAO and mixotrophic denitrification, with anammox disappearing entirely by the end of the study. Comparative assessments between SBR1 and SBR2 emphasized the impact of organic compounds (CH3COONa) on transformations within the N-S-C cycle. SBR1 performance primarily involved anammox, SRAO and other SO42- utilization pathways, with minimal S-dependent autotrophic denitrification (SDAD) involvement. In contrast, SBR2 performance encompassed SRAO, mixotrophic denitrification, and other pathways for SO42- production. The SRAO process involved two dominant genera, such as Candidatus Brocadia and PHOS-HE36.

Abstract:The anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) by autotrophic anaerobic ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AnAOB) is a biological process used to remove reactive nitrogen from wastewater. It has been repeatedly reported that elevated nitrite concentrations can severely inhibit the growth of AnAOB, which renders the anammox process challenging for industrial-scale applications. Both denitrifying (DN) and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) bacteria can potentially consume excess nitrite in an anammox system to prevent its inhibitory effect on AnAOB. However, metabolic interactions among DN, DNRA, and AnAOB bacteria under elevated nitrite conditions remain to be elucidated at metabolic resolutions. In this study, a laboratory-scale anammox bioreactor was used to conduct an investigation of the microbial shift and functional interactions of AnAOB, DN, and DNRA bacteria during a long-term nitrite inhibition to eventual self-recovery episode. The relative abundance of AnAOB first decreased due to high nitrite concentration, which lowered the system’s nitrogen removal efficiency, but then recovered automatically without any external interference. Based on the relative abundance variations of genomes in the inhibition, adaptation, and recovery periods, we found that DN and DNRA bacteria could be divided into three niche groups: type I (types Ia and Ib) that includes mainly DN bacteria and type II and type III that include primarily DNRA bacteria. Type Ia and type II bacteria outcompeted other bacteria in the inhibition and adaptation periods, respectively. They were recognized as potential nitrite scavengers at high nitrite concentrations, contributing to stabilizing the nitrite concentration and the eventual recovery of the anammox system. These findings shed light on the potential engineering solutions to maintain a robust and efficient industrial-scale anammox process.

Abstract:This article investigates the buffering capacity and recovery-enhancing ability of granular activated carbon (GAC) in a starved (influent total nitrogen: 20 mg/L) anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) reactor. The findings revealed that anammox aggregated and sustained basal metabolism with shorter performance recovery lag (6 days) and better nitrogen removal efficiency (84.9 %) due to weak electron-repulsion and abundance redox-active groups on GAC's surface. GAC-supported enhanced extracellular polymeric substance secretion aided anammox in resisting starvation. GAC also facilitated anammox bacterial proliferation and expedited the restoration of anammox microbial community from a starved state to its initial-level. Metabolic function analyses unveiled that GAC improved the expression of genes involved in amino acid metabolism and sugar-nucleotide biosynthesis while promoted microbial cross-feeding, ultimately indicating the superior potential of GAC in stimulating more diverse metabolic networks in nutrient-depleted anammox consortia. This research sheds light on the microbial and metabolic mechanisms underlying GAC-mediated anammox system in low-substrate habitats.
