Abstract:Research on parent-child relationships demonstrates the importance of maternal sensitivity for the development of children's emotion regulation, social competence, and health; thus, it is important to understand the emotional-cognitive capacities underlying maternal sensitivity. We followed 120 mothers and their full-term infants from the newborn period to 5 months postpartum. Mothers' emotion recognition during the newborn period was measured using a validated facial emotion recognition task assessing discrimination (d') of six facial expressions of emotion: happiness, fear, anger, sadness, disgust, and neutrality. Maternal behavior at 5 months postpartum was coded from a mother-infant free-play session using Ainsworth's Sensitivity Scales. Preregistered analyses revealed that mothers' ability to detect happiness specifically (but not other emotions such as fear or sadness) in the neonatal period predicted greater observed sensitivity 4 months later, β = .30, p = .002, ΔR² = .08. Results suggest that maternal recognition of positive emotion may be uniquely predictive of sensitive behavior in low-stress parent-infant interaction contexts. Abstract:Background: The interconnected effects of maternal perinatal depression and the early mother-infant relational quality on children's executive function development are crucial yet understudied. This study addresses this gap, focusing on how perinatal depressive symptoms and emotional availability at 6 months predict child executive function performance at age four, with an emphasis on the moderating role of emotional availability. Method: This study included 282 mother-infant pairs recruited from the Mercy Pregnancy and Emotional Wellbeing Study, utilising repeated Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale measurement over the perinatal period, Emotional Availability Scales, and child executive function assessments (Shape School, NEPSY-II, Preschool Age Psychiatric Assessment, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity scale, inattentive subscale). Latent growth curve analysis incorporated controls for socioeconomic status and maternal cognitive abilities, and moderation effects were examined through multiplicative interaction terms. Results: We found that emotional availability influences children's executive function, specifically switching, motor inhibition, and inattentive symptoms, irrespective of maternal depressive symptom changes. This effect is further nuanced by emotional availability's moderating role in the association between depressive symptom change and switching. Limitations: The study's limitations include a relatively small sample size for moderation analysis and the exclusion of paternal influences. Conclusion: This study is a significant step in understanding the profound influence of maternal emotional availability in infancy on child executive function development, offering new avenues for research and, if replicated, a foundation for innovative intervention approaches.

Abstract:Background Mechanisms underlying the association between maternal mental illness in pregnancy and adverse offspring outcomes still remain uncertain. Therefore, this study investigated the relationship between maternal antenatal psychopathology and child outcomes in middle childhood, and whether infant development might explain this relationship. Method 253 women comprising healthy controls, n=103; women with history only Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) (n=32); women with MDD in current pregnancy (n=67); and women at risk of Postpartum Psychosis (PP), n=51, were recruited in pregnancy and followed up, with their children until 6-8 years. Infant development was assessed at 12 months postpartum across all four groups, and children’s psychopathology at 6-8 years across all groups except “at risk of PP”, who have yet to be assessed. Results Infants of mothers “at risk of PP” scored lower than “healthy controls” for cognitive development (p=.015), and lower than all groups for motor development (p=.004). Infants of mothers “at risk of PP” also scored lower for language development than “healthy controls” and “MDD in pregnancy” (p=<.001). At 6-8 years, more children of “history-only MDD" had clinically significant peer problems compared to “healthy controls” (34.4% difference). Finally, infant cognitive scores were negatively correlated with clinically significant peer problems at 6-8 years (p=.002). Discussion Maternal antenatal psychopathology is associated with less optimal infant development, and more peer problems in middle childhood. Furthermore, infant cognitive development is associated with later psychopathology. Future regression models will test whether these associations represent mechanistic pathways.

Abstract:To support good outcomes for mothers and babies, it is essential to understand the prenatal factors that place both at risk, such as birth trauma, the mother's attachment history, and unplanned motherhood. However, for health professionals supporting mothers, interventions must target malleable intervening factors. One of these, we propose, is social identification as a mother. Among women who had become mothers in past 12 months ( N = 317), we assessed prenatal risk factors, social identification as a mother, and three socio-emotional outcomes: mother's depression, infant temperament, and mother-infant attachment. Consistent with hypotheses, all prenatal risk factors negatively predicted social identification as a mother, which was itself positively associated with socio-emotional functioning. Model fit was excellent. Reduced social identification as a mother may be a key mechanism through which prenatal risk factors produce poorer outcomes for mothers and babies. Interventions may be enhanced by supporting the development of strong and positive social identities.

Abstract:The effects of maternal postpartum depression (PPD) on offspring emotion regulation (ER) are particularly deleterious as difficulties with ER predict an increased risk of psychopathology. This study examined the impact of maternal participation in a public health nurse (PHN)-delivered group cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) intervention on infant ER. Mothers/birthing parents were ≥ 18 years old with an Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) score ≥ 10, and infants were < 12 months. Between 2017 and 2020, 141 mother–infant dyads were randomized to experimental or control groups. Infant ER was measured at baseline (T1) and nine weeks later (T2) using two neurophysiological measures (frontal alpha asymmetry (FAA) and high-frequency heart rate variability (HF-HRV)), and informant-report of infant temperament. Mothers were a mean of 30.8 years old (SD = 4.7), 92.3% were married/ common-law, and infants were a mean of 5.4 months old (SD = 2.9) and 52.1% were male. A statistically significant group-by-time interaction was found to predict change in HF-HRV between T1 and T2 (F(1,68.3) = 4.04, p = .04), but no significant interaction predicted change in FAA or temperament. Results suggest that PHN-delivered group CBT for PPD may lead to adaptive changes in a neurophysiological marker of infant ER, highlighting the importance of early maternal intervention.

Abstract:Background: Emotion regulation develops through bidirectional affective communication. Aim: To investigate the role of maternal interactive behavior in predicting infant affect among preterm versus full-term infants. Study design: The association between maternal interactive behavior (contingent, attention seeking, watching) and infant affect during a modified Still Face (SF) paradigm in a sample of 22 preterm and 28 full term infants (3 ½ - 4 ½ months old) was investigated. Methods: Maternal behavior and infant affect were coded in one second intervals. Results: Maternal contingent interaction was positively correlated with positive infant affect (p < 0.001 for Play; p < 0.001 for Reunion#1; p < 0.01 for Reunion#2, respectively), with a stronger association during the second reunion for preterm infants (p < 0.001). In the preterm sample but not in the full-term sample, attention seeking maternal interaction at Play (baseline), Reunion#1, and Reunion#2 were all positively correlated with negative infant affect at Still Face#2. Maternal watching was negatively associated with positive infant affect for the full sample for both Reunion episodes (p < 0.05). Full term infants' negative affect increased from baseline to the first SF episode and then plateaued, whereas preterm infants demonstrated greater negative affect and less recovery throughout. Mothers of full-term infants showed increased contingent responding after the first SF stressor, while mothers of preterm infants did not (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Preterm infants may be more susceptible to both positive and negative maternal behaviors and mothers of full-term infants may be more responsive to infants' increased distress. Relationship-focused interventions addressing maternal behaviors may enhance positive emotionality and improve self-regulation in medically at-risk infants.

Abstract:The safe limit of normothermic arrest of the canine heart, after which marked deterioration in function occurs, is investigated in the intact animal, using restricted bypass support. The results show a distinct difference between two groups of dogs with 30 and 60 min warm ischaemia respectively, which is primarily reflected in the ability to sustain the circulation, and also in the electrocardiogram, left ventricular end-diastolic pressure, and the rate of oxygen consumption.

Abstract:Background: Previous studies demonstrated that when the violence-exposed child becomes a mother and interacts with her own child during early sensitive periods for social-emotional development, she may have difficulties providing sensitive responsiveness to the child's emotional communication. Such difficulties place the child's development of emotional comprehension (EC) and related self-regulation at risk. The aim of this study was to examine how mothers' interpersonal violence-related posttraumatic disorder (IPV-PTSD) would affect their children's EC and their own ability to predict their children's EC. We also investigated how mothers' predictive ability would correlate with child psychopathology.Methods: Sixty-one mother-child dyads (36 with IPV-PTSD) participated in this study. Children's (mean age = 7.0 years, SD = 1.1) EC was assessed with the Test of Emotion Comprehension (child TEC) and their psychopathology as reported by the mother was assessed with the Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL) and as evaluated by a clinician using selected modules of the Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia (K-SADS). Mothers were measured for IPV-PTSD with the Clinician Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS) and for their capacity to predict their child's emotional comprehension (mother-responding-as-child TEC; mTEC).Results: We found no significant between-group differences in children's level of EC. Maternal PTSD was associated with lower scores on the mTEC, however. Reduced maternal scores on the mTEC were significantly associated with maternal report of increased aggressive child behaviour and with depression symptoms on the K-SADS. Further, scores on the mTEC interacted with maternal report of child aggression on child oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) symptoms on the K-SADS.Conclusion: These findings support that improving maternal emotional comprehension may help reduce child risk for psychiatric morbidity in this population.

Abstract:Exposure to maternal depressive symptoms (MDS) may have a pertinent role in shaping children's emotional development. However, little is known about how these processes emerge in the early postpartum period. The current study examined the direct and interactive associations between MDS and cry-processing cognitions in the prediction of infant negative emotionality and affective concern. Participants were 130 mother-child dyads (50% female) assessed at three time points. During the second trimester of pregnancy, expectant mothers completed a procedure to assess responses to video clips of distressed infants and reported about MDS. Mothers also reported about MDS at 1- and 3-months postpartum. At age 3 months, infants' negative emotionality and affective concern responses were observed and rated. We found no direct associations between MDS and both measures of infant emotional reactivity. However, MDS interacted with cry-processing cognitions to predict affective concern and negative emotionality. Overall, MDS were related to increased affective concern and decreased negative emotionality when mothers held cognitions that were more focused on their own emotions in the face of the infant's cry rather than the infant's emotional state and needs. Clinical implications for early screening and intervention are discussed.

Abstract:SUMMARY: The frequency of transduced cells (gal +) was reduced by the transfer of the Salmonella typhimurium recipient cells with adsorbed P22 transducing phage from a complete into a minimal medium. This reduction was most conspicuous immediately after the adsorption of the phage (3 min.) and then gradually decreased as transfer was delayed. After cultivation for 90 min. under conditions which permitted growth and multiplication of the cells the frequency of the transduced cells was practically no more influenced. The sensitivity of the potentially transduced cells to acriflavine was assayed soon after the adsorption of the phage. An early acriflavine-reversible phase was demonstrated in more than 50 % of transductions. A close time relationship was found between shift-reversible and acriflavine-reversible phases.

Abstract:PURPOSE Previous studies have shown that experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) and anterior uveitis (AU) develop in Lewis rats immunized with myelin basic protein (MBP). The purpose of this study was to characterize the dynamics, distribution, and phenotype of infiltrating cells in the iris during EAE-associated AU. METHODS Lewis rats were immunized with MBP emulsified in complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) or with CFA alone. Cellular infiltration of the iris was analyzed at various time points by immunohistochemistry of wholemounts, flow cytometry, and immunoelectron microscopy, by using monoclonal antibodies specific for monocytes/macrophages (ED1), T lymphocytes (R73, W3.25, OX8), T-cell activation markers (OX39, OX40), granulocytes (HIS48), major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II (OX6), and neurofilament (2H3). RESULTS MBP-immunized rats showed development of characteristic monophasic EAE, followed, after resolution of paralysis, by mild self-limited AU. Initially, focal infiltrates of round MHC class II(+) and ED1(+) cells were found in the iris. During the course of AU, the midiris became massively infiltrated with ED1(+) monocytes-macrophages, R73(+) T cells, granulocytes (HIS48(+)), and MHC class II(+) cells. The influx of T cells consisted of CD4(+) and CD8(+) cells, of which only a small fraction (<14 and 11%, respectively) expressed activation markers. The infiltrating cells accumulated in proximity to myelinated and nonmyelinated nerve bundles and in the vicinity of blood vessels in the iris. No evidence was found for demyelination or nerve degradation. Neither EAE nor AU developed in CFA-treated control rats. CONCLUSIONS These data show that EAE-associated AU is characterized by a transient mixed cellular infiltrate consisting of monocytes-macrophages, granulocytes, and CD4 and CD8 T cells. The preferential accumulation of inflammatory cells in the vicinity of nerve fibers suggests that AU in this model may result from autoreactivity to nerve antigens.
Maternal posttraumatic stress symptoms and infant emotional reactivity and emotion regulation

Abstract:The current study examined associations between maternal posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and infant emotional reactivity and emotion regulation during the first year of life in a primarily low-income, urban, ethnic/racial minority sample of 52 mother-infant dyads. Mothers completed questionnaires assessing their own trauma exposure history and current PTSD and depressive symptoms and their infants' temperament when the infants were 6 months old. Dyads participated in the repeated Still-Face Paradigm (SFP-R) when the infants were 6 months old, and infant affective states were coded for each SFP-R episode. Mothers completed questionnaires assessing infant trauma exposure history and infant current emotional and behavioral symptoms when the infants were 13 months old. Maternal PTSD symptoms predicted infants' emotion regulation at 6 months as assessed by (a) infant ability to recover from distress during the SFP-R and (b) maternal report of infant rate of recovery from distress/arousal in daily life. Maternal PTSD symptoms also predicted maternal report of infant externalizing, internalizing, and dysregulation symptoms at 13 months. Maternal PTSD was not associated with measures of infant emotional reactivity. Neither maternal depressive symptoms nor infant direct exposure to trauma accounted for the associations between maternal PTSD symptoms and infant outcomes. These findings suggest that maternal PTSD is associated with offspring emotion regulation difficulties as early as infancy. Such difficulties may contribute to increased risk of mental health problems among children of mothers with PTSD.
In Search of Neural Endophenotypes of Postpartum Psychopathology and Disrupted Maternal Caregiving

Abstract:This is a selective review that provides the context for the study of perinatal affective disorder mechanisms and outlines directions for future research. We integrate existing literature along neural networks of interest for affective disorders and maternal caregiving: (i) the salience/fear network; (ii) the executive network; (iii) the reward/social attachment network; and (iv) the default mode network. Extant salience/fear network research reveals disparate responses and corticolimbic coupling to various stimuli based upon a predominantly depressive versus anxious (post-traumatic stress disorder) clinical phenotype. Executive network and default mode connectivity abnormalities have been described in postpartum depression (PPD), although studies are very limited in these domains. Reward/social attachment studies confirm a robust ventral striatal response to infant stimuli, including cry and happy infant faces, which is diminished in depressed, insecurely attached and substance-using mothers. The adverse parenting experiences received and the attachment insecurity of current mothers are factors that are associated with a diminution in infant stimulus-related neural activity similar to that in PPD, and raise the need for additional studies that integrate mood and attachment concepts in larger study samples. Several studies examining functional connectivity in resting state and emotional activation functional magnetic resonance imaging paradigms have revealed attenuated corticolimbic connectivity, which remains an important outcome that requires dissection with increasing precision to better define neural treatment targets. Methodological progress is expected in the coming years in terms of refining clinical phenotypes of interest and experimental paradigms, as well as enlarging samples to facilitate the examination of multiple constructs. Functional imaging promises to determine neural mechanisms underlying maternal psychopathology and impaired caregiving, such that earlier and more precise detection of abnormalities will be possible. Ultimately, the discovery of such mechanisms will promote the refinement of treatment approaches toward maternal affective disturbance, parenting behaviours and the augmentation of parenting resiliency.

Abstract:BackgroundMaternal postpartum depression has an impact on mother-infant interaction. Mothers with depression display less positive affect and sensitivity in interaction with their infants compared to non-depressed mothers. Depressed women also show more signs of distress and difficulties adjusting to their role as mothers than non-depressed women. In addition, depressive mothers are reported to be affectively more negative with their sons than with daughters.MethodsA non-clinical sample of 106 mother-infant dyads at psychosocial risk (poverty, alcohol or drug abuse, lack of social support, teenage mothers and maternal psychic disorder) was investigated with EPDS (maternal postpartum depressive symptoms), the CARE-Index (maternal sensitivity in a dyadic context) and PSI-SF (maternal distress). The baseline data were collected when the babies had reached 19 weeks of age.ResultsA hierarchical regression analysis yielded a highly significant relation between the PSI-SF subscale "parental distress" and the EPDS total score, accounting for 55% of the variance in the EPDS. The other variables did not significantly predict the severity of depressive symptoms. A two-way ANOVA with "infant gender" and "maternal postpartum depressive symptoms" showed no interaction effect on maternal sensitivity.ConclusionsDepressive symptoms and maternal sensitivity were not linked. It is likely that we could not find any relation between both variables due to different measuring methods (self-reporting and observation). Maternal distress was strongly related to maternal depressive symptoms, probably due to the generally increased burden in the sample, and contributed to 55% of the variance of postpartum depressive symptoms.

Abstract:Maternal bonding refers to the unique emotional connection between a mother and her baby that gradually develops during the pre- and postpartum period. However, 3-24% of women report bonding disorders (BD), often accompanied by constraints for the mother-infant relationship with consequences for child development. The underlying neural patterns are not clarified yet. Our present study investigates the neural and behavioral patterns that underlie the processing of emotional infant stimuli over the 1st year postpartum. Mothers with and without BD (N = 45) completed an adapted (newly developed) Emotional Infant GoNoGo Task while fMRI scanning at 3, 6 and 12 months postpartum. Our results show that response inhibition towards emotional infant faces elicits stronger results than towards adult faces in all mothers. While behavioral performance in BD is impaired, the neural responses to emotional infant faces as compared to neutral faces are increased at 3 months postpartum in limbic structures such as the anterior cingulate and insula, as well as nucleus caudatus. At 6 and 12 months behavioral reactions assimilate in BD to those of healthy controls, while differences in neural reactions between BD and healthy controls increase at 6 months and decrease again at 12 months. These effects are independent of depressive symptoms. Our findings point to an experience-based adaptive process of emotion processing and responses to infants' affect during the first year postpartum as a specific characteristic of clinical bonding disorder and thus might point to potential or future therapeutic interventions targeting emotion processing and regulation in mothers with BD.

Abstract:This study examined the psychopathological and psychosocial risk profile and the quality of mother-infant interaction in 98 adolescent and young mother-infant dyads. At their infant's age of 3 months, mothers filled in a socio-demographic form and completed a test battery: EPDS for depression, STAY-I for anxiety, PSI-SF for parenting stress, MPSS for social support, AAI for maternal attachment and reflective functioning, CECA for adverse childhood experiences, Care-Index and Mind-mindedness coding system for mother-infant interaction. Results showed that motherhood in adolescence was associated with several psychosocial risk factors. Adolescent and young mothers have depression (25%), anxiety (29%) and insecure attachment (65%), with low reflective functioning, of whom 18% have disorganized attachment. A total of 54% of the mothers had at least one adverse childhood experience. Furthermore, adolescent mothers had low sensitivity and mind-mindedness and high intrusiveness, and their infant had low responsiveness and high passive behaviors. Mothers under 18 have experienced more sexual abuse, are more likely to be single and have been followed by child social services more than mothers aged 18-21. Adolescent mothers have a high-risk psychopathological and psychosocial profile that affects their ability to mentalize and build an adequate relationship with the child. It appears to be important to support the adolescent mother-child relationship.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: No previous longitudinal study has examined the impact of comorbid maternal personality disorder (PD) and depression on child development. We set out to examine whether maternal PD and depression assessed at 2 months post partum would be independently associated with adverse developmental outcomes at 18 months of age.METHOD: Women were recruited into the study shortly after delivery and screened for depression and PD. Those meeting criteria for depression, PD, or both conditions, were selected for assessment at 2 months post partum, together with a comparison group with neither condition (total sample, N = 200). Assessments of cognitive, social and emotional development were conducted with their children at 18 months of age.RESULTS: Maternal postpartum depression and PD were both associated with higher levels of dysregulated infant behavior. There was a significant interaction between depression and PD in the model of dysregulated behavior and the detrimental effects of maternal depression and PD were evident only among mothers with both conditions. Maternal depression was independently associated with impaired infant cognitive scores and higher levels of internalizing behavior.CONCLUSIONS: Future studies of the effects of maternal depression should also take into account the effects of comorbid maternal PD. Health professionals need to be aware of the possible co-occurrence of PD among mothers presenting with postnatal depression and that mothers with these co-occurring disorders are likely to require greater support.
