Direct Observations of Fine Primary Particles from Residential Coal Burning: Insights into Their Morphology, Composition, and Hygroscopicity

Abstract:Emissions of residential coal burning are an important contributor to air pollution in developing countries, but few studies have yet comprehensively characterized the physicochemical properties of individual primary particles from residential coal burning. Fine primary particles emitted from eight types of coal with low, medium, and high maturity were collected in the flaming and burn-out stages in a typical residential stove. Based on morphology and composition of individual particles, they were divided into six types: organic matter (OM), OM-S, soot-OM, S-rich, metal, and mineral particles. Low-maturity coals (e.g., lignite) dominantly emitted soot-OM particles in the flaming stage, the medium-maturity coals (e.g., medium-maturity bituminous coals) emitted abundant OM particles, and high-maturity coals (e.g., anthracite) emitted abundant OM-S particles. We found that carbonaceous particles from coal burning significantly decreased with an increase of coal maturity and that soot particles were mainly formed in the flaming stage of low-maturity coals under higher burning temperatures. We concluded that coal maturity and burning temperature both determine particulate properties in coal emissions. In addition, OM and soot particles from residential coal burning displayed extremely weak hygroscopicity, while inorganic salts within individual particles determined particle hygroscopic growth. Understanding the characteristics of particulate matter emitted from residential coal burning is helpful to trace sources of ambient particles and clarify their possible aging mechanism in air influenced by coal burning emissions. Our results suggest that air quality improvements can benefit substantially from the replacement of low-and medium-maturity coals with high-maturity coals, natural gas, or electricity in rural areas. Plain Language Summary Raw coals have been widely used for heating and cooking in developing countries such as China, India, Mongolia, and Nepal. Due to inefficient burning and no air pollutant control devices, large amounts of air pollutants are emitted from residential coal burning to indoors and ambient air, which have additional deleterious effects on human health and global climate. In addition, recent studies suggest that residential coal burning is a main source of severe haze pollution in North China. We found that the primary organic particles are dominant aerosols in direct emission of most coal burning. However, many fine black carbon and sulfates that are normally considered as vehicular emission and secondary formation in wintertime hazes, respectively, are also found. Our study provides one database to understand what nature properties of primary aerosol particles emitted from various residential coal burning. We call that air quality improvements can benefit substantially from the replacements of low-and medium-maturity coals with high-maturity coals, natural gas, or electricity in rural areas.
Optically Measured Black and Particulate Brown Carbon Emission Factors from Real-World Residential Combustion Predominantly Affected by Fuel Differences

Abstract:Residential solid fuel use is an important source of black carbon (BC) but also a main source of uncertainty in BC emission inventories, as reliable real-world emission factors (EFs) and data on consumption of noncommercial household fuels are limited. In this study, particulate BC and brown carbon (BrC) for real-world indoor coal and biomass burning were evaluated using a SootScan model OT21 optical transmissometer from a field campaign including 343 biomass/coal combustion events. The highest BC EF from the burning of coal cake (a mixed fuel locally made from coal and clay) was 1.6-6.4 higher than that of other fuels, and BC EFs were higher for coal combustion than for biomass burning. The highest particulate BrC EF was from charcoal burning and was 1.5-4.3 times higher than that from other biomass and coals. Burning fuel in iron stoves had lower BC and BrC EFs, at approximately 15-66% and 40-54%, respectively, compared with burning in other stove types. The difference between heating and cooking activities was statistically insignificant (p > 0.05). A generalized linear model coupled with dominance analysis evidenced that the EFs were significantly associated with fuel and stove types, with the fuel difference being a major influencing factor explaining 68% of the variation. This suggests that a clean fuel transition would have beneficial impacts on air pollution associated with the residential sector in China. The absorption EFs differed by 2-3 orders of magnitude across different fuel-stove combinations. The Absorption Ångström Exponent values for the particulate from residential solid fuel combustions ranged from 0.92 to 3.7.
Real-time Measurements of Black Carbon and Other Pollutant Emissions from Residential Biofuel Stoves in Rural China.

Abstract:Biofuel stoves are an important source of black carbon (BC) emissions, which have adverse effects on the environment and human health, especially in rural areas. However, there have been only limited studies of BC emissions from residential biofuel stoves based on real-time measurements. In this study, a photo-acoustic extinctiometer (PAX)-based real-time measurement system was employed to monitor the emission characteristics of corncobs, corn stalks, cotton stalks and poplar branches in simple or improved stoves (with a total of 16 units) in Hebei Province, China. The real-time and phased emissions of BC, fine particulate matter (PM2.5), carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2) were assessed, and the effects of stove type and fuel on emissions were analyzed. Under the same conditions, polar branches were associated with the highest BC emission factors (EFs) of up to 2.64 +/- 0.42 g kg(-1), while the EFs for improved stoves were higher than those for simple stoves. During the ignition phase, BC emissions were found to be low, while the later addition of fuel dramatically increased emissions, followed by a gradual decrease until the next fuel addition. The phased results show that the flaming phase had the highest BC emission rate, the fuel addition phase was associated with the highest BC EF. The BC emission rates and EFs for the ignition, fuel addition, flaming and smoldering phases ranged from 0.0014-0.014, 0.11-6.32, 0.18-2.24 and 0.03-0.32 mg s(-1), and from 0.04-0.18, 0.38-9.53, 0.45-3.55 and 0.12-1.01 g kg-1, respectively. This study assessed the BC emissions from residential biofuel stoves using a larger sample size than in prior work. The results increase our understanding of the BC emissions process, which is helpful in terms of improving the accuracy of BC EF estimations. Abstract:Residential biomass combustion significantly contributes to light-absorbing carbonaceous aerosols in the atmosphere, impacting the earth's radiative balance at regional and global levels. This study investigates the contribution of brown carbon (BrC) to the total particulate light absorption in the wavelength range of 370–950 nm (BrC 370–950 ) and the particulate absorption Ångström exponents (AAE 470/950 ) in 15 different European residential combustion appliances using a variety of wood-based fuels. BrC 370–950 was estimated to be from 1 % to 21 % for wood log stoves and 10 % for a fully automatized residential pellet boiler. Correlations between the ratio of organic to elemental carbon (OC / EC) and BrC 370–950 indicated that a one-unit increase in OC / EC corresponded to approximately a 14 % increase in BrC 370–950 . Additionally, BrC 370–950 was clearly influenced by the fuel moisture content and the combustion efficiency, while the effect of the combustion appliance type was less prominent. AAE 470/950 of wood log combustion aerosols ranged from 1.06 to 1.61. By examining the correlation between AAE 470/950 and OC / EC, an AAE 470/950 close to unity was found for pure black carbon (BC) particles originating from residential wood combustion. This supports the common assumption used to differentiate light absorption caused by BC and BrC. Moreover, diesel aerosols exhibited an AAE 470/950 of 1.02, with BrC contributing only 0.66 % to the total absorption, aligning with the assumption employed in source apportionment. These findings provide important data to assess the BrC from residential wood combustion with different emission characteristics and confirm that BrC can be a major contributor to particulate UV and near-UV light absorption for northern European wood stove emissions with relatively high OC / EC ratios.

Abstract:Emissions from road traffic and residential heating contribute to urban air pollution. Advances in emission reduction technologies may alter the composition of emissions and affect their fate during atmospheric processing. Here, emissions of a gasoline car and a wood stove, both equipped with modern emission mitigation technology, were photochemically aged in an oxidation flow reactor to the equivalent of one to five days of photochemical aging. Fresh and aged exhausts were analyzed by ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry. The gasoline car equipped with a three-way catalyst and a gasoline particle filter emitted minor primary fine particulate matter (PM2.5), but aging led to formation of particulate low-volatile, oxygenated and highly nitrogen-containing compounds, formed from volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and gases incl. NOx, SO2, and NH3. Reduction of the particle concentration was also observed for the application of an electrostatic precipitator with residential wood combustion but with no significant effect on the chemical composition of PM2.5. Comparing the effect of short and medium photochemical exposures on PM2.5 of both emission sources indicates a similar trend for formation of new organic compounds with increased carbon oxidation state and nitrogen content. The overall bulk compositions of the studied emission exhausts became more similar by aging, with many newly formed elemental compositions being shared. However, the presence of particulate matter in wood combustion results in differences in the molecular properties of secondary particles, as some compounds were preserved during aging.
Photochemical aging process on PM2.5 bound PAHs emission from solid fuel combustion in traditional and improved stoves

Abstract:Solid fuels are widely used as energy sources in the developing countries across the world. In this study, emissions of primary and secondary (i.e., photochemically aged) parent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (p-PAHs) and their derivate from a variety of solid fuel burning were determined through a potential aerosol mass-oxidation flow reactor (PAM-OFR). The improved technology stoves showed reductions of 61.2–66.8% to the primary and secondary EFs of the total quantified PAHs (tPAHs) in comparison to the traditional stoves. In addition, the primary and secondary EFs of the tPAHs for the anthracite coal and maize straw charcoal were 80.9–88.7% and 19.4–51.6%, respectively, lower than those of the raw bituminous coal and maize straw briquette. Results demonstrated that the total p-PAHs and alkylated PAHs decreased for ~20% and ~ 50% after the 2- and 7- equivalent aged days, respectively, whereas the total oxygenated- and nitro-PAHs (i.e., o-PAHs and n-PAHs) had increases of ~30% and ~ 80%, respectively. Significant formations of carbonyl functional group in the aged samples were confirmed by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, well consistent to the increases of EFs of the oxygenated species (e.g., o-PAHs). Unique diagnostic ratios for the o-PAHs and n-PAHs including 3 N-FLA/(3 N-FLA + 1 N-PYR) (> 0.2 for coal, < 0.2 for biomass) and 1,3DN-PYR/(1,3DN-PYR + 1,6DN-PYR) (>0.5 for coal; <0.5 for biomass) were discovered and firstly reported to differentiate the emissions from the solid fuels. Even though the aged total emission of benzo[a]pyrene equivalent factors decreased by 26.0–34.0%, the secondary atmospheric formations of more toxic derivatives of o-PAHs and n-PAHs are given to be a high concern. The findings of this study could assist in refining the speciated emission inventories and in evaluating the chronic and acute health risks. The results could also evidence that the advanced heating technology is an effective measure in the emission control of toxic organic substances.

Abstract:Black carbon (BC) as an important part of atmospheric aerosols imposes adverse effects on atmospheric visibility, health, and climate change. Mass absorption cross-section (MACBC) is an essential parameter in BC quantitative and model research, which is of growing concern in recent decades. In this study, we conducted real-world measurements on BC emissions from two major sources of residential biofuel stoves and diesel trucks. BC emissions and MACBC values are quantified based on the photoacoustic and thermo-optical methods. The impacts of typical factors from biofuel stoves (biofuel and stove types) and diesel trucks (vehicle types, emission standards, and driving conditions) on BC/EC, MACBC values, and the relationships between BC and EC, BC/PM2.5 and MACBC are analyzed comprehensively. We find the BC and EC emissions from these two sources present good correlations, and those emissions are almost equal from diesel trucks, while the EC emissions from biofuel burning are slightly higher than BC. The typical factors for analysis may affect the optical properties of BC, and then will affect the mass ratio of BC/EC, indirectly. We have calculated the equivalent MACBC values and compared those with previous studies. Then, we further divided the equivalent MACBC values under several typical factors, which are 5.84 and 2.71 m2/g for improved and simple biofuel stoves, and 5.91 and 4.64 m2/g for light-duty and heavy-duty diesel trucks, respectively. Furthermore, the MACBC and BC/PM2.5 under the main operational metrics generally present good correlations. Our results will help to enhance the understanding of MACBC and provide effective data support for BC quantification and atmospheric model research.
Emission Characteristics of Carbonaceous Particles from Various Residential Coal-Stoves in China.

Abstract:China is thought to be the most important contributor to the global burden of carbonaceous aerosols, and residential coal combustion is the greatest emission source of black carbon (BC). In the present study, two high-efficiency household coal-stoves are tested together with honeycomb-coal-briquettes and raw-coal-chunks of nine different coals. Coal-burning emissions are collected onto quartz fiber filters (QFFs) and analyzed by a thermal-optical transmittance (TOT) method. Emission factors (EFs) of particulate matter (PM), organic carbon (OC), and elemental carbon (EC) are systematically measured, and the average EFs are calculated by taking into account our previous data. For bituminous coal-briquette and -chunk, EFs of PM, OC, and EC are 7.33, 4.16, and 0.08 g/kg and 14.8, 5.93, and 3.81 g/kg, respectively; and for anthracite-briquette and -chunk, they are 1.21, 0.06, and 0.004 g/kg and 1.08, 0.10, and 0.007 g/kg, respectively. Annual estimates for PM, OC, and EC emissions in China are calculated for the years of 2000 and 2005 according to the EFs and coal consumptions, and the results are consistent with our previous estimates. Bituminous coal-chunk contributes 68% and 99% of the total OC and EC emissions from household coal burning, respectively. Additionally, a new model of Aethalometer (AE90) is introduced into the sampling system to monitor the real-time BC concentrations. On one hand, AE90 provides a set of EFs for optical BC in parallel to thermal-optical EC, and these two data are generally comparable, although BC/EC ratios vary in different coal/stove combinations. On the other hand, AE90 offers a chance to observe the variation of BC concentrations during whole burning cycles, which demonstrates that almost all BC emits into the flue during the initial period of 15 min after coal addition into household stoves.
Evaluating Co-Emissions into Indoor and Outdoor Air of EC, OC, and BC from In-Home Biomass Burning

Abstract:Biomass burning constitutes a major source of ambient PM2.5 but also a predominant source of indoor PM2.5. Carbonaceous matters, such as organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), black carbon, and brown carbon (BrC), are major components of PM2.5, and are of broad concern due to their significant impacts on health and climate patterns. In this study, we took simultaneous indoor and outdoor emission measurements to quantify pollutant emission factors (EFs) of carbonaceous matters, including the stack and fugitive EFs, from the real world biomass burning in rural households. Modified combustion efficiency, fuel moisture, burning rates, and chimney gas velocity explained 45-71% of variations in the field-based emission factors. BrC (measured at 370 nm, and estimated based on the specific attenuation coefficients-16.6 m(2)/g at 880 nm and 39.5 m(2)/g at 370 nm) comprised up to similar to 20% of all OC. Fractions of fugitive emissions of the total reached as high as 44-48%. Fugitive emissions would result in very high peak concentrations of approximately tens of mg/m(3), leading to severe indoor air pollution. The study clearly demonstrates that the simultaneous studies on indoor and outdoor emissions and air quality is crucial to understand mechanisms of the environmental impacts of internal combustion sources.
Characterization of fine particulate matter from indoor cooking with solid biomass fuels

Abstract:Household burning of solid biomass fuels emits pollution particles that are a huge health risk factor, especially in low-income countries (LICs) such as those in Sub-Saharan Africa. In epidemiological studies, indoor exposure is often more challenging to assess than outdoor exposure. Laboratory studies of solid biomass fuels, performed under real-life conditions, are an important path toward improved exposure assessments. Using on- and offline measurement techniques, particulate matter (PM) from the most commonly used solid biomass fuels (charcoal, wood, dung, and crops residue) was characterized in laboratory settings using a way of burning the fuels and an air exchange rate that is representative of real-world settings in low-income countries. All the fuels generated emissions that resulted in concentrations which by far exceed both the annual and the 24-hour-average WHO guidelines for healthy air. Fuels with lower energy density, such as dung, emitted orders of magnitude more than, for example, charcoal. The vast majority of the emitted particles were smaller than 300 nm, indicating high deposition in the alveoli tract. The chemical composition of the indoor pollution changes over time, with organic particle emissions often peaking early in the stove operation. The chemical composition of the emitted PM is different for different biomass fuels, which is important to consider both in toxicological studies and in source apportionment efforts. For example, dung and wood yield higher organic aerosol emissions, and for dung, nitrogen content in the organic PM fraction is higher than for the other fuels. We show that aerosol mass spectrometry can be used to differentiate stove-related emissions from fuel, accelerant, and incense. We argue that further emission studies, targeting, for example, vehicles relevant for LICs and trash burning, coupled with field observations of chemical composition, would advance our understanding of air pollution in LIC. We believe this to be a necessary step for improved air quality policy.
Cloning and structural analysis of the anthocyanin pigmentation locus Rt of Petunia hybrida: characterization of insertion sequences in two mutant alleles.

Abstract:Anthocyanin biosynthesis in flowers of Petunia hybrida is controlled by the regulatory genes an1, an2 and an11. Seven classes of cDNA clones homologous to transcripts that are down-regulated in an1-, an2- and an11- mutants were isolated via differential cDNA cloning. Genetic mapping, antisense RNA experiments and analyses of mutant alleles demonstrated that one class of clones originated from the Rt locus. The rt gene has no introns and encodes a protein with homology to mammalian glucuronosyl transferases and flavonoid 3-O-glucosyltransferase (UF3GT) encoded by the bz1 gene from Zea mays. As the Rt locus controls the rhamnosylation of reddish anthocyanin-3-O-glucosides which is the first in a series of modifications that finally yield magenta or blue/purple coloured anthocyanins, this suggests that rt encodes an anthocyanin rhamnosyl transferase. Molecular analysis of two mutant rt alleles showed that their expression is blocked by different DNA insertion elements. Mutability of the rt-vu15 allele results from the presence of a 284 bp transposable element (dTph1) in the rt promoter region, causing a block in transcription. The protein coding region of the rt-r27 allele contains a 442 bp insertion (dTph3) resulting in premature polyadenylation of rt transcripts. Although dTph3 cannot transpose, it has sequence characteristics of transposable elements, suggesting that it is a defective member of a new family of transposable elements.

Abstract:Recent years have seen an increase in the use of wood for energy production of over 30 %, and this trend is expected to continue due to the current energy crisis and geopolitical instability. At present, residential wood burning (RWB) is one of the most important sources of organic aerosols (OAs) and black carbon (BC), posing a significant risk to air quality and health. Simultaneously, as a substantial aerosol source, RWB also holds relevance in the context of aerosol radiative effects and climate. While BC is recognized for its large light absorption cross-section, the role of OAs in light absorption is still under evaluation due to their heterogeneous composition and source-dependent optical properties. Existing studies that characterize wood-burning aerosol emissions in Europe primarily concentrate on urban and background sites and focus on BC properties. Despite the significant RWB emissions in rural areas, these locations have received comparatively less attention. The present scenario underscores the imperative for an improved understanding of RWB pollution, aerosol optical properties, and their subsequent connection to climate impacts, particularly in rural areas.

Abstract:Residential solid fuel emissions are among the most important sources of carbonaceous substances that exert harmful effects on air quality, human health and climate change. Considering the constantly updated emission reduction policies for residential solid fuel combustion in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region, the emission data for the source should updated in a timely manner. Testing was performed on residential solid fuel emissions in the BTH region, China. The emission factors and profiles of carbonaceous substances (including organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), EPA priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (EPAHs), methyl PAHs (MPAHs), and n-alkanes) emitted from residential solid fuels were obtained. The results showed the ranges of emission factors of PM2.5, OC, EC, EPAHs, MPAHs and n-alkanes from residential solid fuel emissions were 1.92–17.6, 0.312–6.85, 0.066–2.33, 0.004–0.58, 0.003–0.87 and 0.009–0.39 g/kg fuel, respectively. The carbon fraction profiles showed that OC1, OC2, and EC1 were the major products of residential solid fuel combustion, and the non-polar organic matter profiles showed that Fluo and MFluo were dominant. The effects of combustion modes, types of stove and types of the fuel on emission characteristics of carbonaceous substances were discussed in detail. The emission factors of carbonaceous substances from the smoldering phase and traditional stove were higher than those from the flaming phase and improved stove, respectively, which was mainly controlled by the modified combustion efficiency (MCE). It was found that the emission factors of pollutants with decreasing MCE values sharply increased, especially when the MCE values were below 90%. Finally, some diagnostic ratios were discussed, and it was determined that residential coal combustion is considered to occur at MPAHs/PAHs higher than 1.5 and MFluo/Fluo higher than 5.

Abstract:Controlled combustion experiments were conducted to investigate the influence of fuel charge size, moisture, air ventilation and feeding rate on the emission factors (EFs) of carbonaceous particulate matter, parent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (pPAHs) and their derivatives from residential wood combustion in a typical brick cooking stove. Measured EFs were found to be independent of fuel charge size, but increased with increasing fuel moisture. Pollution emissions from the normal burning under an adequate air supply condition were the lowest for most pollutants, while more pollutants were emitted when an oxygen deficient atmosphere was formed in the stove chamber during fast burning. The impacts of these factors on the size distribution of emitted particles was also studied. Modified combustion efficiency and the four investigated factors explained 68%, 72%, and 64% of total variations in EFs of PM, organic carbon, and oxygenated PAHs, respectively, but only 36%, 38% and 42% of the total variations in EFs of elemental carbon, pPAHs and nitro-PAHs, respectively.
Significant Ultrafine Particle Emissions from Residential Solid Fuel Combustion

Abstract:When addressing particulate matter (PM) emissions from residential solid fuel combustion, ultrafine particles are usually merged into PM2.5, while whose mass concentration is applied as the index in evaluating PM pollution as well as assessing PM-induced health risk. This may not effectively represent the risk from ultrafine particles. In this study, we explored ultrafine particle emissions during residential combustion under both laboratorycontrolled and real-world rural household conditions. Significant ultrafine particle emissions (i.e. with emission factors between 2 x 10(15) to 2 x 10(16) particles per kg of fuel) are found for both coal and biomass. High emissions of particle mass concentration often occur at the beginning of the combustion (i.e. the first 30 min after fire start) while high emissions of particle number concentration occur in a later combustion period (60-150 min). Ultrafine particles account for over 90% of the emitted total particle number concentration from 3 nm to 10 mu m. These emissions elevate ultrafine particle number concentration by more than a decade in indoor environment under which household residents are directly exposed. In addition, we show that there is notable inconsistency between reducing PM2.5 mass based emissions and reducing ultrafine particle number based emissions among various control strategies that were proposed for reducing pollution from residential combustion. Both "cleaner" fuels and stoves that arc designed to reduce PM2.5 emissions are found to be not necessarily effective in reducing ultrafine particle emissions, even increase their emissions in some cases. These findings indicate that the overlook of ultrafine particle emissions from residential solid fuel combustion can lead to potential health risk to household residents, especially to those vulnerable ones (e.g., the elderly and children) who are more sensitive to indoor air pollution. More attentions are needed on ultrafine particle pollution and its potential health risk in comparison to using the PM mass concentration index alone. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Assessing Outdoor Air Quality and Public Health Impact Attributable to Residential Black Carbon Emissions in Rural China

Abstract:Black carbon (BC) is a significant component of particulate matter (PM) that relates to air pollution, climate forcing, and further implications for public health. BC is predominantly released from the combustion of solid fuels. Combustion of low-quality fuels in rural China may induce severe respiratory and cardiopulmonary health outcomes for residents, which have however been inadequately assessed. One major reason for the limited understanding is the lack of a high-resolution inventory. An improved method of estimating the BC-associated public health burden is needed. This work quantified premature mortalities due to residential BC emissions in rural China. Domestic BC emissions at 1x1 km resolution were compiled based on previous field investigation, which were further configured for air quality simulation. A chemistry transport model, WRF-CMAQ v5.2, was employed for simulating BC concentrations. The consequent premature mortalities were quantified by a BC-specific concentration-response function (CRF) derived from an epidemiological study. Results show that residential combustion of solid fuel in rural China emitted 648.0 Gg (95%CI: 361.0-965.9) BC in 2014, after dispersion, accounting for 51.8% of annual mean ground-level BC concentration in China. Such impact was most severe in North and Northeast China, and the Sichuan Basin. The further investigation estimated 171,000 (95%CI: 69,000-387,000) premature mortalities that were attributable to exposure to rural residential BC. These findings reveal the major contribution of rural residential BC emissions to air pollution formation and public health impacts. Our findings are anticipated to provide useful information for enacting the next-stage environmental strategy for the residential sector in China.

Abstract:Abstract. Residential wood combustion (RWC) emits large amounts of gaseous and particulate organic aerosol (OA). In the atmosphere, the emission is transformed via oxidative reactions, which are under daylight conditions driven mainly by hydroxyl radicals (OH). This continuing oxidative ageing produces secondary OA and may change the health- and climate-related properties of the emission. However, it is not well known how the composition of RWC-originated OA changes as the function of OH exposure. In this work, emissions from two modern residential logwood combustion appliances were photochemically aged in an oxidation flow reactor (OFR) with various OH exposure levels, reaching up to 6×1011 s cm−3 (equivalent to 1 week in the atmosphere). Gaseous organic compounds were analysed by proton transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometry (PTR-ToF-MS), while particulate OA was analysed online by a high-resolution soot particle aerosol mass spectrometer (SP-HR-ToF-AMS) and offline by in situ derivatization thermal desorption–gas chromatography–time-of-flight mass spectrometry (IDTD-GC-ToF-MS). Photochemical reactions increased the mass of particulate organic carbon by a factor of 1.3–3.9. The increase in mass took place during the first atmospheric equivalent day of ageing, after which the enhancement was independent of the extent of photochemical exposure. However, ageing increased the oxidation state of the particulate OA linearly throughout the assessed range, with ΔH:C/ΔO:C slopes between −0.17 and −0.49 in van Krevelen space. Ageing led to an increase in acidic fragmentation products in both phases, as measured by the IDTD-GC-ToF-MS for the particulate and PTR-ToF-MS for the gaseous phase. For the gaseous organic compounds, the formation of small carbonylic compounds combined with the rapid degradation of primary volatile organic compounds such as aromatic compounds led to a continuous increase in both the O : C and H : C ratios. Overall, the share of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) in particles degraded rapidly during ageing, although some oxygen-substituted PACs, most notably naphthaldehydic acid, increased, in particular during relatively short exposures. Similarly, the concentrations of particulate nitrophenols rose extensively during the first atmospheric equivalent day. During continuous photochemical ageing, the dominant transformation mechanisms shifted from the initial gas-phase functionalization/condensation to the transformation of the particulate OA by further oxidation reactions and fragmentation. The observed continuous transformation of OA composition throughout a broad range of OH exposures indicates that the entire atmospheric lifetime of the emission needs to be explored to fully assess the potential climate and health effects of RWC emissions.

Abstract:This study aims to identify unique signatures from residential coal combustion in China across various combustion conditions and coal types. Using a Thermal/Spectral Carbon Analyzer with a Photoionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometer (TSCA-PI-TOF-MS), we focus on the optical properties and organic mass spectra of the emissions. Bituminous coal emerged as the primary emitter of total carbon, releasing 729 μg C/mg PM 2.5 under smoldering and 894 μg C/mg PM 2.5 under flaming. Carbon fractions mainly comprised OC1 and OC2, except for anthracite's dominance of EC1 under smoldering. Pyrolysis carbon absorption shifted from 405, 445 and 532 nm during smoldering to near-infrared bands (635–980 nm) during flaming for both bituminous and anthracite coal. Conversely, clean coal exhibited an inverse trend, attributed to additives enhancing oxygen-containing organic compounds and long-chain hydrocarbons released in charring process. Sample of bituminous coal began charring at OC3 step, while anthracite began earlier at OC2 step, particularly pronounced under flaming. Clean coal displayed unconventional charring at OC1 step under smoldering condition, producing signature compounds like butenal, methylfuran, furanylalcohol, and naphthol. The mass spectra of bituminous coal featured characteristic peaks, including m / z 192 (methylphenanthrene), 206, 220 (alkylated phenanthrenes), and 234 (retene). Anthracite coal showed a potential tracer at m / z 223, shifting from OC1 in smoldering to OC2 in flaming. Clean coal under flaming condition exhibited elevated levels of aromatic compounds, indicating potential toxicity, with peaks at m / z 178 (phenanthrene), 228 (chrysene/benz[ a ]anthracene), 234 (retene), 242 (methylchrysene), and 252 (benzo[ a ]pyrene, benzo[ k ]fluoranthene). Results also showed that the broader mass spectra range in the OC3 and OC4 steps across all coal types suggests that high-temperature pyrolysis promotes diversity. These findings contribute to refined source apportionment of carbon emissions from residential coal combustion and provide the scientific basis for the formulation of air pollution prevention strategies, crucial for coal-dependent regions.

Abstract:To investigate the effects of biomass burning and photochemical oxidation on the black carbon (BC) mixing state and light absorption, a tandem centrifugal particle mass analyzer (CPMA) and single-particle soot photometer (SP2) system was used to measure ambient fine particulate BC during EXPLORE-YRD 2018 campaign (EXPeriment on the eLucidation of the atmospheric Oxidation capacity and aerosol foRmation, and their Effects in Yangtze River Delta). The mass ratio (M-R) of the non-BC coating to BC core, a morphology-independent parameter to quantify the mixing state of BC-containing aerosols, is derived. Two types of periods were identified, namely non-significant biomass-burning period (NB), and enhanced biomass burning period (EB). The M-R was higher during EB (2.3 +/- 0.5), compared with during the NB (2.0 +/- 0.5). M-R showed bimodal diurnal variation with peaks in the early morning and early afternoon, mainly due to the biomass burning and photochemical processes, respectively. The light-absorbing enhancement ranged from 1.0 to 1.19 when MR was from 1.4 to 3.4. The relationship of rBC mixing state and its optical properties was parameterized, which can further be used in the regional model.

Abstract:Biomass burning is a significant source of particulate matter (PM) in ambient air and its accurate source apportionment is a major concern for air quality. The discrimination between residential wood heating (RWH) and garden green waste burning (GWB) particulate matter (PM) is rarely achieved. The objective of this work was to evaluate the potential of non-targeted screening (NTS) analyses using HRMS (high resolution mass spectrometry) data to reveal discriminating potential molecular markers of both sources. Two residential wood combustion appliances (wood log stove and fireplace) were tested under different output conditions and wood moisture content. GWB experiments were carried out using two burning materials (fallen leaves and hedge trimming). PM samples were characterized using NTS approaches with both LC- and GC-HRMS (liquid and gas chromatography-HRMS). The analytical procedures were optimized to detect as many species as possible. Chemical fingerprints obtained were compared combining several multivariate statistical analyses (PCA, HCA and PLS-DA). Results showed a strong impact of the fuel nature and the combustion quality on the chemical fingerprints. 31 and 4 possible markers were discovered as characteristic of GWB and RWH, respectively. Complementary work was attempted to identify potential molecular formulas of the different potential marker candidates. The combination of HRMS NTS chemical characterization with multivariate statistical analyses shows promise for uncovering organic aerosol fingerprinting and discovering potential PM source markers.
