Abstract:We present implementation of second- and third-order algebraic diagrammatic construction theory for efficient and accurate computations of molecular electron affinities (EA), ionization potentials (IP), and densities of states (EA-/IP-ADC(n), n = 2, 3). Our work utilizes the non-Dyson formulation of ADC for the single-particle propagator and reports working equations and benchmark results for the EA-ADC(2) and EA-ADC(3) approximations. We describe two algorithms for solving EA-/IP-ADC equations: (i) conventional algorithm that uses iterative diagonalization techniques to compute low-energy EA, IP, and density of states, and (ii) Green's function algorithm (GF-ADC) that solves a system of linear equations to compute density of states directly for a specified spectral region. To assess accuracy of EA-ADC(2) and EA-ADC(3), we benchmark their performance for a set of atoms, small molecules, and five DNA/RNA nucleobases. As our next step, we demonstrate efficiency of our GF-ADC implementation by computing core-level K-, L-, and M-shell ionization energies of a zinc atom without introducing core-valence separation approximation. Finally, we use EA- and IP-ADC methods to compute band gaps of equally-spaced hydrogen chains Hn with n up to 150, providing their estimates near thermodynamic limit. Our results demonstrate that EA-/IP-ADC(n) (n = 2, 3) methods are efficient and accurate alternatives to widely used electronic structure methods for simulations of electron attachment and ionization properties.

A relativistic third-order algebraic diagrammatic construction theory for electron detachment, attachment and excitation problems

Abstract:We present the theory and implementation of a highly efficient relativistic third-order algebraic diagrammatic construction [ADC(3)] method based on a four-component (4c) Dirac-Coulomb (DC) Hamiltonian for the calculation of ionization potentials (IP), electron affinities (EA), and excitation energies (EE). Benchmarking calculations for IP, EA, and EE were performed on both atomic and molecular systems to assess the accuracy of the newly developed four-component relativistic ADC(3) method. The results show good agreement with the available experimental data. The Hermitian nature of the 4c-ADC(3) Hamiltonian, combined with the perturbative truncation of the wave function, offers significant computational advantages over the standard equation-of-motion coupled-cluster approach, particularly for property calculations. The method's suitability for property calculations is further demonstrated by computing oscillator strengths and excited-state dipole moments for heavy elements.

Abstract:The intermediate state representation (ISR) formalism allows for the straightforward calculation of excited state properties and state-to-state transition moments using the algebraic-diagrammatic construction (ADC) scheme for the polarization propagator. Here, the derivation and implementation of the ISR in third-order perturbation theory for the one-particle operator are presented, enabling, for the first time, the calculation of consistent third-order ADC [ADC(3)] properties. The accuracy of ADC(3) properties is evaluated with respect to high-level reference data and compared to the previously used ADC(2) and ADC(3/2) schemes. Oscillator strengths and excited state dipole moments are computed, and typical response properties are considered: dipole polarizabilities, first-order hyperpolarizabilities, and two-photon absorption strengths. The consistent third-order treatment of the ISR leads to an accuracy similar to that of the mixed-order ADC(3/2) method; the individual performance, however, depends on the property and molecule under investigation. ADC(3) produces slightly improved results in the case of oscillator strengths and two-photon absorption strengths, while excited state dipole moments, dipole polarizabilities, and first-order hyperpolarizabilities exhibit similar accuracy at ADC(3) and ADC(3/2) levels. Taking the significant increase of central processing unit time and memory requirements of the consistent ADC(3) approach into account, the mixed-order ADC(3/2) scheme offers a better compromise between accuracy and efficiency for the properties considered.
Simulating Ionized States in Realistic Chemical Environments With Algebraic Diagrammatic Construction Theory and Polarizable Embedding

Abstract:Theoretical simulations of electron detachment processes are vital for understanding chemical redox reactions, semiconductor and electrochemical properties, and high-energy radiation damage. However, accurate calculations of ionized electronic states are very challenging due to their open-shell nature, importance of electron correlation effects, and strong interactions with chemical environment. In this work, we present an efficient approach based on algebraic diagrammatic construction theory with polarizable embedding that allows to accurately simulate ionized electronic states in condensed-phase or biochemical environments (PE-IP-ADC). We showcase the capabilities of PE-IP-ADC by computing the vertical ionization energy (VIE) of thymine molecule solvated in bulk water. Our results show that the second- and third-order PE-IP-ADC methods combined with the basis of set of triple-zeta quality yield a solvent-induced shift in VIE of -0.92 and -0.94 eV, respectively, in an excellent agreement with experimental estimate of -0.9 eV. This work demonstrates the power of PE-IP-ADC approach for simulating charged electronic states in realistic chemical environments and motivates its further development.

Abstract:We present an implementation and benchmark of new approximations in multireference algebraic diagrammatic construction theory for simulations of neutral electronic excitations and UV/Vis spectra of strongly correlated molecular systems (MR-ADC). Following our work on the first-order MR-ADC approximation [J. Chem. Phys. 2018, 149, 204113], we report the strict and extended second-order MR-ADC methods (MR-ADC(2) and MR-ADC(2)-X) that combine the description of static and dynamic electron correlation in the ground and excited electronic states without relying on state-averaged reference wavefunctions. We present an extensive benchmark of the new MR-ADC methods for excited states in several small molecules, including the carbon dimer, ethylene, and butadiene. Our results demonstrate that for weakly-correlated electronic states the MR-ADC(2) and MR-ADC(2)-X methods outperform the third-order single-reference ADC approximation and are competitive with the results from equation-of-motion coupled cluster theory. For states with multireference character, the performance of the MR-ADC methods is similar to that of an N-electron valence perturbation theory. In contrast to conventional multireference perturbation theories, the MR-ADC methods have a number of attractive features, such as a straightforward and efficient calculation of excited-state properties and a direct access to excitations outside of the frontier (active) orbitals.

Quantifying and reducing spin contamination in algebraic diagrammatic construction theory of charged excitations

Abstract:Algebraic diagrammatic construction (ADC) theory is a computationally efficient and accurate approach for simulating electronic excitations in chemical systems. However, for the simulations of excited states in molecules with unpaired electrons the performance of ADC methods can be affected by the spin contamination in unrestricted Hartree-Fock (UHF) reference wavefunctions. In this work, we benchmark the accuracy of ADC methods for electron attachment and ionization of open-shell molecules with the UHF reference orbitals (EA/IP-ADC/UHF) and develop an approach to quantify the spin contamination in the charged excited states. Following this assessment, we demonstrate that the spin contamination can be reduced by combining EA/IP-ADC with the reference orbitals from restricted open-shell Hartree-Fock (ROHF) or orbital-optimized Møller-Plesset perturbation (OMP) theories. Our numerical results demonstrate that for open-shell systems with strong spin contamination in the UHF reference the third-order EA/IP-ADC methods with the ROHF or OMP reference orbitals are similar in accuracy to equation-of-motion coupled cluster theory with single and double excitations.

Efficient Spin-Adapted Implementation of Multireference Algebraic Diagrammatic Construction Theory. I. Core-Ionized States and X-Ray Photoelectron Spectra

Abstract:We present an efficient implementation of multireference algebraic diagrammatic construction theory (MR-ADC) for simulating core-ionized states and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS). Taking advantage of spin adaptation, automatic code generation, and density fitting, our implementation can perform calculations for molecules with more than 1500 molecular orbitals, incorporating static and dynamic correlation in the ground and excited electronic states. We demonstrate the capabilities of MR-ADC methods by simulating the XPS spectra of substituted ferrocene complexes and azobenzene isomers. For the ground electronic states of these molecules, the XPS spectra computed using the extended second-order MR-ADC method (MR-ADC(2)-X) are in a very good agreement with available experimental results. We further show that MR-ADC can be used as a tool for interpreting or predicting the results of time-resolved XPS measurements by simulating the core ionization spectra of azobenzene along its photoisomerization, including the XPS signatures of excited states and the minimum energy conical intersection. This work is the first in a series of publications reporting the efficient implementations of MR-ADC methods.

adcc: A versatile toolkit for rapid development of algebraic-diagrammatic construction methods

Abstract:ADC-connect (adcc) is a hybrid python/C++ module for performing excited state calculations based on the algebraic-diagrammatic construction scheme for the polarisation propagator (ADC). Key design goal is to restrict adcc to this single purpose and facilitate connection to external packages, e.g., for obtaining the Hartree-Fock references, plotting spectra, or modelling solvents. Interfaces to four self-consistent field codes have already been implemented, namely pyscf, psi4, molsturm, and veloxchem. The computational workflow, including the numerical solvers, are implemented in python, whereas the working equations and other expensive expressions are done in C++. This equips adcc with adequate speed, making it a flexible toolkit for both rapid development of ADC-based computational spectroscopy methods as well as unusual computational workflows. This is demonstrated by three examples. Presently, ADC methods up to third order in perturbation theory are available in adcc, including the respective core-valence separation and spin-flip variants. Both restricted or unrestricted Hartree-Fock references can be employed.

Abstract:Charged excitations are electronic transitions that involve a change in the total charge of a molecule or material. Understanding the properties and reactivity of charged species requires insights from theoretical calculations that can accurately describe orbital relaxation and electron correlation effects in open-shell electronic states. In this perspective, we review the current state of algebraic diagrammatic construction (ADC) theory for simulating charged excitations and its recent developments. We start with a short overview of ADC formalism for the one-particle Green's function, including its single- and multireference formulations and extension to periodic systems. Next, we focus on the capabilities of ADC methods and discuss recent findings about their accuracy for calculating a wide range of excited-state properties. We conclude our perspective by outlining possible directions for future developments of this theoretical approach.

Ab Initio Electron Propagators with an Hermitian, Intermediately Normalized Superoperator Metric Applied to Vertical Electron Affinities

Abstract:New-generation ab initio electron propagator methods for calculating electron detachment energies of closed-shell molecules and anions have surpassed their predecessors' accuracy and computational efficiency. Derived from an Hermitian, intermediately normalized superoperator metric, these methods contain no adjustable parameters. To assess their versatility, a standard set (NIST-50-EA) of 50 vertical electron affinities of small closed-shell molecules based on NIST reference data has been created. Errors with respect to reference data on 23 large, conjugated organic photovoltaic (OPV23) molecules have also been analyzed. All final states are valence anions that correspond to electron affinities between 0.2 and 4.2 eV. For a given scaling of the arithmetic bottleneck, the new-generation methods obtain the lowest mean absolute errors (MAEs). The best methods with fifth-power arithmetic scaling realize MAEs below 0.1 eV. Composite models comprising cubically and quintically scaling calculations executed with large and small basis sets, respectively, produce OPV23 MAEs near 0.05 eV. The accuracy of quintically scaling methods executed with large basis sets is thereby procured with reduced computational effort. New-generation results obtained with and without the diagonal self-energy approximation in the canonical Hartree-Fock basis have been compared. These results indicate that Dyson orbitals closely resemble canonical Hartree-Fock orbitals multiplied by the square root of a probability factor above 0.85.

Abstract:A new generation of electron-propagator methods for the calculation of electron binding energies has surpassed its antecedents with respect to accuracy, efficiency, and interpretability. No adjustable parameters are introduced in these fully <i>ab initio</i> procedures. Numerical tests versus several databases of valence, vertical electron binding energies of closed-shell molecules and atoms have been performed. Easily interpreted self-energy approximations with cubic arithmetic scaling produce mean absolute errors (MAEs) of 0.2 and 0.3 eV for electron detachments and attachments, respectively. The most accurate explicitly renormalized methods with fifth-power arithmetic scaling yield MAEs below 0.1 eV for detachments and attachments. Approximate renormalization leads to more efficient fifth-power alternatives for electron detachments that achieve similar accuracy with fewer bottleneck operations. Composite protocols generate excellent predictions versus highly accurate basis-extrapolated standards and experiments. The validity of the diagonal self-energy approximation and the accuracy of the approximate renormalizations are confirmed. The success of these perturbative methods based on canonical Hartree-Fock orbitals rests on a Hermitized, intermediately normalized superoperator metric. The results of all of the new-generation calculations may be analyzed in terms of final-state orbital relaxation and differential correlation effects.

It is discussed that the natural framework for both gravity and quantum is Weyl geometry. Abstract:We report the development and benchmark of multireference algebraic diagrammatic construction theory (MR-ADC) for the simulations of core-excited states and X-ray absorption spectra (XAS). Our work features an implementation that incorporates core-valence separation into the strict and extended second-order MR-ADC approximations (MR-ADC(2) and MR-ADC(2)-X), providing an efficient access to high-energy excited states without including inner-shell orbitals in the active space. Benchmark results on a set of small molecules indicate that at equilibrium geometries the accuracy of MR-ADC is similar to that of single-reference ADC theory when static correlation effects are not important. In this case, MR-ADC(2)-X performs similarly to single- and multireference coupled cluster methods in reproducing the experimental XAS peak spacings. We demonstrate the potential of MR-ADC for chemical systems with multiconfigurational electronic structure by calculating the K-edge XAS spectrum of the ozone molecule with a multireference character in its ground electronic state and the dissociation curve of core-excited molecular nitrogen. For ozone, the MR-ADC results agree well with the data from experimental and previous multireference studies of ozone XAS, in contrast to the results of single-reference methods, which underestimate relative peak energies and intensities. The MR-ADC methods also predict the correct shape of core-excited nitrogen potential energy curve, in a good agreement with accurate calculations using driven similarity renormalization group approaches. These findings suggest that MR-ADC(2) and MR-ADC(2)-X are promising methods for the XAS simulations of multireference systems and pave the way for their efficient computer implementation and applications.

Abstract:An energy decomposition analysis (EDA) separates a calculated interaction energy into as many interpretable contributions as possible; for instance, permanent and induced electrostatics, Pauli repulsions, dispersion and charge transfer. The challenge is to construct satisfactory definitions of all terms in the chemically relevant regime where fragment densities overlap, rendering unique definitions impossible. Towards this goal, we present an improved EDA for Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT) with properties that have previously not been simultaneously attained. Building on the absolutely localized molecular orbital (ALMO)-EDA, this second generation ALMO-EDA is variational and employs valid antisymmetric electronic wavefunctions to produce all five contributions listed above. These contributions moreover all have non-trivial complete basis set limits. We apply the EDA to the water dimer, the T-shaped and parallel-displaced benzene dimer, the p-biphthalate dimer "anti-electrostatic" hydrogen bonding complex, the biologically relevant binding of adenine and thymine in stacked and hydrogen-bonded configurations, the triply hydrogen-bonded guanine-cytosine complex, the interaction of Cl(-) with s-triazine and with the 1,3-dimethyl imidazolium cation, which is relevant to the study of ionic liquids, and the water-formaldehyde-vinyl alcohol ter-molecular radical cationic complex formed in the dissociative photoionization of glycerol.
A new approach to the random phase approximation

Abstract:With the aim of obtaining a practical approach to molecular photoionization continua, a new formulation is given for the random phase approximation (RPA). This development is based on the so-called algebraic-diagrammatic construction (ADC) used previously to derive higher-order approximations to the polarization and other propagators. In the ADC reformulation the RPA pseudo-eigenvalue equations split into two equivalent, generally Hermitian, secular problems of half dimension. Here the elements of the resulting ADC secular matrices are given in the form of `regular' perturbation expansions. Similar perturbation expansions result for the `effective' transition amplitudes required to calculate spectral intensities. Approximation schemes converging to the full RPA are obtained by truncating these perturbation expansions at successively higher-order n. For the lowest orders n = 1 and 2 the ADC(n)/RPA schemes are specified explicitly. In addition to the perturbation-theoretical approach, direct closed-form expressions are given for the ADC secular matrix and effective transition amplitudes relating these quantities to the RPA eigenvalues and eigenvectors. As shown by these relations, the ADC reformulation can be viewed as a specific form of quasi-degenerate perturbation theory (QDPT) applied to the RPA pseudo-eigenvalue problem. In the single-channel (SC) approximation the ADC secular equations reduce to a one-electron eigenvalue problem for an energy-independent non-local potential. A particularly useful method is the single-channel ADC(1) scheme combining the scattering solutions of the familiar frozen-core Hartree - Fock (FCHF) model with a simple first-order expression for the transition moments. Illustrative applications of the SC-ADC(1) method to the photoionization in and are reported. These calculations show that ground state correlation can quite substantially influence both the magnitude and the shape of the cross sections as a function of energy.
The electron propagator for non-interacting particles: An alternative approach to quasi-degenerate perturbation theory (QDPT)

Abstract:This article presents an alternative formulation of quasi-degenerate perturbation theory (QDPT). The development results by simplifying established many-body (MB) techniques to systems of non-interacting particles (NIP). While the physical information of a NIP system is fully equivalent with that of the underlying one-particle system, NIP adaptions of MB schemes can acquire useful new roles in the one-particle context. In particular, the algebraic-diagrammatic construction (ADC) approach to the particle-detachment part of the electron propagator, turns into a new formalism of QDPT for the original one-particle system, establishing a diagrammatic perturbation theory for the matrix elements of the effective hamiltonian and the associated effective eigenvector coefficients (EEC). Using the NIP-ADC procedure explicit QDPT expansions are derived through third order. Alternatively, the intermediate state representation (ISR), underlying the ADC approach, allows one to construct the effective secular quantities directly from successive orders in the PT expansions of the NIP ground state and ground-state energy. Moreover, exact closed-form expressions can be derived for the effective hamiltonian and the EEC matrix in terms of 'target state' eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the one-particle system. These results are fully consistent with corresponding expressions derived within the QDPT context. The NIP approach to QDPT is not confined to actual particles but applies to arbitrary quantum systems. Any quantum system can be seen as formally constituting a "hyper-particle" giving rise to a system of non-interacting hyper-particles. The NIP adaptions of the biorthogonal coupled-cluster (BCC) and unitary coupled-cluster (UCC) methods are briefly discussed as well.

Abstract:Recently, we have developed an integration approach for the calculations of ionization potentials (IPs) and electron affinities (EAs) of molecular systems at the level of second-order Møller-Plesset (MP2) (Su, N. Q.; Xu, X. J. Chem. Theory Comput. 11, 4677, 2015), where the full MP2 energy gradient with respect to the orbital occupation numbers was derived but only at integer occupations. The theory is completed here to cover the fractional occupation systems, such that Slater's transition state concept can be used to have accurate predictions of IPs and EAs. Antisymmetrized Goldstone diagrams have been employed for interpretations and better understanding of the derived equations, where two additional rules were introduced in the present work specifically for hole or particle lines with fractional occupation numbers.

Abstract:Quantum chemistry in the form of density functional theory (DFT) calculations is a powerful numerical experiment for predicting intermolecular interaction energies. However, no chemical insight is gained in this way beyond predictions of observables. Energy decomposition analysis (EDA) can quantitatively bridge this gap by providing values for the chemical drivers of the interactions, such as permanent electrostatics, Pauli repulsion, dispersion, and charge transfer. These energetic contributions are identified by performing DFT calculations with constraints that disable components of the interaction. This review describes the second-generation version of the absolutely localized molecular orbital EDA (ALMO-EDA-II). The effects of different physical contributions on changes in observables such as structure and vibrational frequencies upon complex formation are characterized via the adiabatic EDA. Example applications include red- versus blue-shifting hydrogen bonds; the bonding and frequency shifts of CO, N2, and BF bound to a [Ru(II)(NH3)5]2 + moiety; and the nature of the strongly bound complexes between pyridine and the benzene and naphthalene radical cations. Abstract:We introduce the electron attachment equation-of-motion pair coupled cluster doubles (EA-EOM-pCCD) ansatz, which allows us to inexpensively compute electron affinities, energies of unoccupied orbitals, and electron attachment spectra. We assess the accuracy of EA-EOM-pCCD for a representative data set of organic molecules for which experimental data is available, as well as the electron attachment process in uranyl dichloride. EA-EOM-pCCD provides more reliable energies for the LUMO than its ionization potential EOM counterpart for the HOMO. The advantage of EA-EOM-pCCD is demonstrated for rylene and rylene diimide units of different chain lengths, where the differences between theoretical and experimental EAs approach chemical accuracy.
