Abstract:Isomer spectroscopy of heavy neutron-rich nuclei beyond the N=126 closed shell has been performed for the first time at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory of the RIKEN Nishina Center. New millisecond isomers have been identified at low excitation energies, 985.3(19) keV in 213Tl and 874(5) keV in 215Tl. The measured half-lives of 1.34(5) ms in 213Tl and 3.0(3) ms in 215Tl suggest spins and parities 11/2- with the single proton-hole configuration h11/2 as leading component. They are populated via E1 transitions by the decay of higher-lying isomeric states with proposed spin and parity 17/2+, interpreted as arising from a single s1/2 proton hole coupled to the 8+ seniority isomer in the (A+1)Pb cores. The lowering of the 11/2- states is ascribed to an increase of the h11/2 proton effective single-particle energy as the second g9/2 orbital is filled by neutrons, owing to a significant reduction of the proton-neutron monopole interaction between the h11/2 and g9/2 orbitals. The new ms-isomers provide the first experimental observation of shell evolution in the almost unexplored N>126 nuclear region below doubly-magic 208Pb.

Abstract:Excited states have been identified in only three of the N=126 closed shell nuclei ‘below’ Pb: Tl, Hg and very recently Pt. We aim to extend our knowledge of the neutron-rich N=126 nuclei by observing the internal decay of the πh 11/2 excited state in Au, which is expected to be isomeric. In addition, the decay of the analogous states in the N=122 and N=124 Au will be studied. The lifetimes of the expected isomeric states are crucial for the success of the experiment, and they are estimated to be in the range of 0.3-20 s. These are long enough to enable the extraction from the source, but shorter than the beta-decay halflives. Proton single-particle energies and transition rates will be extracted, providing information about the robustness of the N=126 shell-closure. Three days of beamtime is requested.

Abstract:The neutron-rich isotopes of palladium have attracted considerable interest in terms of the evolution of the N=82 neutron shell closure and its influence on the r-process nucleosynthesis. In this Letter, we present the first spectroscopic information on the excited states in 125Pd79 and 127Pd81 studied using the EURICA γ-ray spectrometer, following production via in-flight fission of a high-intensity 238U beam at the RIBF facility. New isomeric states with half-lives of 144(4) ns and 39(6) μs have been assigned spins and parities of (23/2+) and (19/2+) in 125Pd and 127Pd, respectively. The observed level properties are compared to a shell-model calculation, suggesting the competition between proton excitations and neutron excitations in the proton-hole and neutron-hole systems in the vicinity of the doubly magic nucleus 132Sn.

Abstract:The nuclei below lead but with more than 126 neutrons are crucial to an understanding of the astrophysical $r$-process in producing nuclei heavier than $A\sim190$. Despite their importance, the structure and properties of these nuclei remain experimentally untested as they are difficult to produce in nuclear reactions with stable beams. In a first exploration of the shell structure of this region, neutron excitations in $^{207}$Hg have been probed using the neutron-adding ($d$,$p$) reaction in inverse kinematics. The radioactive beam of $^{206}$Hg was delivered to the new ISOLDE Solenoidal Spectrometer at an energy above the Coulomb barrier. The spectroscopy of $^{207}$Hg marks a first step in improving our understanding of the relevant structural properties of nuclei involved in a key part of the path of the $r$-process.

Abstract:In-flight fission of a 345MeV per nucleon 238U primary beam on a 2mm thick 9Be target has been used to produce and study the decays of a range of neutron-rich nuclei centred around the doubly mid-shell nucleus 170Dy at the RIBF Facility, RIKEN, Japan. The produced secondary fragments of interest were identified event-by-event using the BigRIPS separator. The fragments were implanted into the WAS3ABI position sensitive silicon active stopper which allowed pixelated correlations between implants and their subsequent β-decay. Discrete γ-ray transitions emitted following decays from either metastable states or excited states populated following beta decay were identified using the 84 coaxial high-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors of the EURICA spectrometer, which was complemented by 18 additional cerium-doped lanthanum bromide (LaBr3) fast-timing scintillation detectors from the FATIMA collaboration. This paper presents the internal decay of a metastable isomeric excited state in the odd-odd nucleus 168Tb, which corresponds to a single proton-neutron hole configuration in the valence maximum nucleus 170Dy. These data represent the first information on excited states in this nucleus, which is the most neutron-rich odd-odd isotope of terbium (Z=65) studied to date. Nilsson configurations associated with an axially symmetric, prolate-deformed nucleus are proposed for the 168Tb ground state the observed isomeric state by comparison with Blocked BCS-Nilsson calculations.

Abstract:The level structures of 70Co and 70Ni, populated from the β decay of 70Fe, have been investigated using β-delayed γ-ray spectroscopy following in-flight fission of a 238U beam. The experimental results are compared to Monte-Carlo Shell-Model calculations including the pf+g9/2+d5/2 orbitals. The strong population of a (1+) state at 274 keV in 70Co is at variance with the expected excitation energy of ∼1 MeV from near spherical single-particle estimates. This observation indicates a dominance of prolate-deformed intruder configurations in the low-lying levels, which coexist with the normal near spherical states. It is shown that the β decay of the neutron-rich A=70 isobars from the new island of inversion to the Z=28 closed-shell regime progresses in accordance with a newly reported type of shell evolution, the so-called Type II, which involves many particle-hole excitations across energy gaps.

Abstract:A new short-lived neutron-deficient isotope ^{220}Np was synthesized in the fusion-evaporation reaction ^{185}Re(^{40}Ar,5n)^{220}Np at the gas-filled recoil separator SHANS. Based on the measurement of the correlated α-decay chains, the decay properties of ^{220}Np with E_{α}=10040(18) keV and T_{1/2}=25_{-7}^{+14} μs were determined, which are in good agreement with theoretical predictions. From the new experimental results coupled with the recently reported α-decay data of ^{219,223}Np, the α-decay systematics for Np isotopes around N=126 was established, which allows us for the first time to test the robustness of the N=126 shell closure in Z=93 Np isotopes. The results also indicate that, in the region of nuclei with Z≥83, the proton drip line has been reached for all odd-Z isotopes up to Np.

Abstract:The β-delayed γ-ray spectroscopy of neutron-rich ^{123,125}Ag isotopes is investigated at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory of RIKEN, and the long-predicted 1/2^{-} β-emitting isomers in ^{123,125}Ag are identified for the first time. With the new experimental results, the systematic trend of energy spacing between the lowest 9/2^{+} and 1/2^{-} levels is extended in Ag isotopes up to N=78, providing a clear signal for the reduction of the Z=40 subshell gap in Ag towards N=82. Shell-model calculations with the state-of-the-art V_{MU} plus M3Y spin-orbit interaction give a satisfactory description of the low-lying states in ^{123,125}Ag. The tensor force is found to play a crucial role in the evolution of the size of the Z=40 subshell gap. The observed inversion of the single-particle levels around ^{123}Ag can be well interpreted in terms of the monopole shift of the π1g_{9/2} orbitals mainly caused by the increasing occupation of ν1h_{11/2} orbitals.

Abstract:Collinear laser spectroscopy was performed on Zn (Z=30) isotopes at ISOLDE, CERN. The study of hyperfine spectra of nuclei across the Zn isotopic chain, N=33–49, allowed the measurement of nuclear spins for the ground and isomeric states in odd-A neutron-rich nuclei up to N=50. Exactly one long-lived (>10 ms) isomeric state has been established in each 69–79Zn isotope. The nuclear magnetic dipole moments and spectroscopic quadrupole moments are well reproduced by large-scale shell–model calculations in the f5pg9 and fpg9d5 model spaces, thus establishing the dominant term in their wave function. The magnetic moment of the intruder Iπ=1/2+ isomer in 79Zn is reproduced only if the νs1/2 orbital is added to the valence space, as realized in the recently developed PFSDG-U interaction. The spin and moments of the low-lying isomeric state in 73Zn suggest a strong onset of deformation at N=43, while the progression towards 79Zn points to the stability of the Z=28 and N=50 shell gaps, supporting the magicity of 78Ni.

Abstract:By means of γ-γ-γ and γ-γ(θ) measurements of prompt fission γrays from 252Cf using Gammasphere, new insights have been gained into the A～100 (Z～40, N>56) neutron-rich region, which has long been of interest for shape transitions, shape coexistence and onset of deformations. The systematic investigations of odd-Z isotopes have revealed a shape transition from axially symmetric shapes with very large quadrupole deformations in Z=39 (Y) to near maximum triaxial shapes with moderate quadrupole deformations in Z=43(Tc), 44 (Ru),45(Rh)isotopes. The Nb(Z=41)isotopes are found to be transitional with regard to this shape transition. The band-crossings observed in the even-N Tc and Rh isotopes are attributed to alignment of a pair of h11/2 neutrons. The long-expected sudden shape transition in Nb isotopic chain is now observed. The long-sought high-spin level scheme and deformed states in 100Nb (N=59) were identified. The ground state of 100Nb was found to be strongly deformed, in disagreement with existing theory. The'shape coexistence was confirmed in the nucleus, and the sudden shape transiti0n in the Nb isotopic chain was seen to occur between N=58 (spherical) to N=59 (strongly deformed), in contrast to the sudden shape transition from N=59 (spherical) to N=60 (strongly deformed) in Sr (Z=38), Y (Z=39) and Zr (Z=40) isotopic chains. The observation of strongly deformed ground state in 100Nb and its very large and irregular moments of inertia make 100Nb an especially interesting case for further theoretical studies. Recent detailed studies of octupole excitations in odd-Z Cs (Z=55) and La (Z=57) isotopes have discovered a sharp drop in electric dipole moments Do in the Cs isotopic chain 141,143. 144Cs,and, most likely, the previously reported moderate drop in Do in 145, 147La is extended sharply down in 148La. The sharp drops of Do in Cs and La are most likely analogous to those reported in 146Ba and 224Ra, which were accounted for by the reflection-asymmetric mean field shell correction theory. The very large Do in both 141Cs and 142Xe and the simplex-dependent Do deduced in 141Cs but not in 143Cs need further theoretical studies. Based on rotational frequency ratios,ω- (I)/ω+(I), octupole vibrations are proposed in Cs isotopes, like the cases in Xe isotopes, while octupole deformations are suggested in La isotopes.

Abstract:The level structure of the neutron-rich Cu-77 nucleus is investigated through beta-delayed gamma-ray spectroscopy at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory of the RIKEN Nishina Center. Ions of Ni-77 are produced by inflight fission, separated and identified in the BigRIPS fragment separator, and implanted in the WAS3ABi silicon detector array, surrounded by Ge cluster detectors of the EURICA array. A large number of excited states in Cu-77 are identified for the first time by correlating gamma rays with the beta decay of Ni-77, and a level scheme is constructed by utilizing their coincidence relationships. The good agreement between large-scale Monte Carlo shell model calculations and experimental results allows for the evaluation of the single-particle structure near Ni-78 and suggests a single-particle nature for both the 5/2(1)(-) and 3/2(1)(-) states in Cu-77, leading to doubly magic Ni-78.

Abstract:The disappearance of traditional magic numbers and the generation of new magic numbers in weakly-bound nuclei have always been the frontier of physics with radioactive beam. In recent years, the research based on large scientific devices around the world has got fruitful results. In the light neutron-rich region far away from the beta-stable line, it has been found that the traditional neutron magic numbers 8, 20, 28 disappear and the new neutron magic numbers 14, 16, 34 appear. In the medium and heavy neutron-rich regions, experimental and theoretical studies have shown that the traditional neutron magic numbers 50 and 82 tend to weaken or disappear with the increase of the neutron/proton ratio. For example, recent experimental studies have shown that the N=82 shell closure in Sn-132, Cd-130, and Pd-128 isotones is still robust, but a significant reduction of the N=82 gap was suggested to occur between Sn and Zr as a consequence of the absent Z=40 subshell gap. With the Z=47, the neutron-rich odd-A Ag isotopes are naturally of great interest. Their valence protons are assumed to fill the pi g(9/2) and pi p(1/2) orbitals, between which the Z=40 subshell gap is formed. The energy difference between the lowest lying 9/2(+) and 1/2(-) states in these neutron-rich odd-A Ag isotopes provides direct information on the Z=40 subshell gap. Therefore, to explore the N=82 shell evolution in Ag isotopes, the beta-delayed gamma-ray spectroscopy of neutronrich Ag-123,Ag-125 isotopes is investigated at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory of RIKEN in the framework of the Euroball RIken Cluster Array project. The long-predicted 1/2(-) beta-emitting isomers in Ag-123,Ag-125 are identified for the first time. Shellmodel calculations have been performed using the KSHELL code with the state-of-the-art monopole-based universal interaction V-MU plus a spin-orbit force from M3Y (V-MU+LS), and give an overall satisfactory description of experimental levels in Ag-123,Ag-125, particularly for the low-lying levels. The calculations indicate that, as approaching N=82, the wave functions from the pi g(9/2) and pi p(1/2) orbitals dominate low-lying states of Ag isotopes. With the newly observed 1/2(-) isomeric states in Ag-123,Ag-125, the systematic energy difference between the lowest 9/2(+) and 1/2(-) states along Ag isotopic chain indicates an increasing trend beyond 125Ag, which reveals that the Z=40 subshell gap starts to be restored toward N=82. Extrapolating the trend toward N=82, a considerable diminishment of the Z=40 subshell gap is expected. To get more insight into the microscopic origin of shell evolution in this region, the effective single-particle energies are calculated for the proton orbitals in the region of N=68-82 with the V-MU+LS interaction. It is found that, if only the central + spin-orbit parts are considered, the pi p(1/2) orbital lies below the pi g(9/2) orbital in the whole region of N=68-82. In contrast, with the inclusion of the tensor part (especially the pi g(9/2)-nu h(11/2) monopole), the pi g(9/2) orbital is affected much more than the pp1/ 2 orbital, and the spacing between pi g(9/2) and pi p(1/2) orbitals is notably reduced, consequently, resulting in the inversion of these two orbitals at N similar to 74, which is compatible with the experimental inversion position. The tensor force manifests its crucial role in the modification of the order of the proton orbitals and the size of the Z=40 subshell gap in Ag isotopes mainly through the pi g(9/2)-nu h(11/2) monopole. Vice versa, our calculations indicate that this tensor force will also influence the behavior of the nu h(11/2) orbital, which is important for the N=82 shell gap.

Abstract:A new isomer with µs half-life was observed in 160 Nd at RIBF, RIKEN Nishina Center by using in-flight fission of a 238 U beam and a cluster-type Ge detector array, EURICA.The experimental results and a PSM calculation indicate that the isomer in 160 Nd is a 2 quasi-particle excitation of neutrons with a configuration of ν1/2[521] ⊗ ν7/2[633] as the case in other N = 100 isotones.The E(4 + )/E(2 + ) ratio of the ground-state band, 3.29, shows the 160 Nd is well deformed and the ground band has a rotational nature.The 4 -excitation of 160 Nd showed an increase in energy by ∼ 100 keV compared to that of 162 Sm as predicted by the PSM calculation.A PSM calculation was performed by changing input β 4 value and confirmed that the large hexadecupole deformation in Nd was responsible for the increase of the isomer energy.

Abstract:Background: The evolution of shell structure around doubly magic exotic nuclei is of great interest in nuclear physics and astrophysics. In the `southwest' region of $^{78}$Ni, the development of deformation might trigger a major shift in our understanding of explosive nucleosynthesis. To this end, new spectroscopic information on key close-lying nuclei is very valuable. Purpose: We intend to measure the isomeric and $\beta$ decay of $^{75}$Co, with one-proton and two-neutron holes relative to $^{78}$Ni, to access new nuclear structure information in $^{75}$Co and its $\beta$-decay daughters $^{75}$Ni and $^{74}$Ni. Methods: The nucleus $^{75}$Co is produced in relativistic in-flight fission reactions of $^{238}$U at the Radioactive Ion Beam Factory in the RIKEN Nishina Center. Its isomeric and $\beta$ decay are studied exploiting the BigRIPS and EURICA setups. Results: We obtain partial $\beta$-decay spectra for $^{75}$Ni and $^{74}$Ni, and report a new isomeric transition in $^{75}$Co. The energy [$E_{\gamma}=1914(2)$ keV] and half-life [$t_{1/2}=13(6)$ $\mu$s] of the delayed $\gamma$ ray lend support for the existence of a $J^{\pi}=(1/2^-)$ isomeric state at 1914(2) keV. A comparison with PFSDG-U shell-model calculations provides a good account for the observed states in $^{75}$Ni, but the first calculated $1/2^-$ level in $^{75}$Co, a prolate $K=1/2$ state, is predicted about 1 MeV below the observed $(1/2^-)$ level. Conclusions: The spherical-like structure of the lowest-lying excited states in $^{75}$Ni is proved. In the case of $^{75}$Co, the results suggest that the dominance of the spherical configurations over the deformed ones might be stronger than expected below $^{78}$Ni. Further experimental efforts to discern the nature of the $J^{\pi}=(1/2^-)$ isomer are necessary.

Abstract:The transitional nuclei $^{132}\mathrm{Xe}$ and $^{133}\mathrm{Xe}$ are investigated after multinucleon-transfer (MNT) and fusion-evaporation reactions. Both nuclei are populated (i) in $^{136}\mathrm{Xe}+^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ MNT reactions employing the high-resolution Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, (ii) in the $^{136}\mathrm{Xe}+^{198}\mathrm{Pt}$ MNT reaction employing the GAMMASPHERE spectrometer in combination with the gas-detector array CHICO, and (iii) as an evaporation residue after a $^{130}\mathrm{Te}(\ensuremath{\alpha},xn)^{134\ensuremath{-}xn}\mathrm{Xe}$ fusion-evaporation reaction employing the HORUS $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray array at the University of Cologne. The high-spin level schemes are considerably extended above the ${J}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}=({7}^{\ensuremath{-}})$ and $({10}^{+})$ isomers in $^{132}\mathrm{Xe}$ and above the $11/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ isomer in $^{133}\mathrm{Xe}$. The results are compared to the high-spin systematics of the $Z=54$ as well as the $N=78$ and $N=79$ chains. Furthermore, evidence is found for a long-lived (${T}_{1/2}\ensuremath{\gg}1\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{s}$) isomer in $^{133}\mathrm{Xe}$ which closes a gap along the $N=79$ isotones. Shell-model calculations employing the SN100PN and PQM130 effective interactions reproduce the experimental findings and provide guidance to the interpretation of the observed high-spin features.

Abstract:Neutron-rich Pm (Z = 61) isotopes were studied by delayed gamma-ray spectroscopy at RIBF, RIKEN Nishina Center using the in-flight fission of a 345 MeV/nucleon U-238 beam. A cluster-type Ge detector array, EURICA, was used to measure the delayed gamma rays from stopped ions. Isomeric gamma decays were observed in Pm-159 and Pm-161 with half-lives of 4.97(12) mu s and 0.79(4) mu s, respectively. Level schemes for 159 Pm and Pm-161 were constructed in this study. The isomeric states of Pm-159 and Pm-161 could be interpreted as two quasiparticle excitations of neutrons with the configurations of nu(7/2[633] circle times 5/2[523]) and nu(7/2[633] circle times 1/2[521]), respectively. They are analogous to the isomers that have been observed systematically in other even-mass N = 98 and N = 100 isotones in this region. A projected shell model calculation was performed and it reproduced the order of three-quasiparticle states only if new Nilsson parameters with an N-dependent spin-orbit interaction were used. This work demonstrates that the strength of spin-orbit interactions in standard Nilsson parameters needs to be modified to study the properties of neutron-rich rare-earth nuclei around A = 165, and provides new evidence supporting the existence of the deformed N = 98 subshell gap in odd-mass nuclei for the first time.

Abstract:A study of neutron-rich isotopes in the A = 185 region of the nuclear chart has uncovered long-lived (>1 s) isomers in several isotopes of hafnium, tantalum, tungsten, rhenium, and osmium. The region was accessed via the use of projectile fragmentation with the UNILAC-SIS accelerators at GSI. Fragmentation products of Au-197 were passed through the fragment separator (FRS) and injected into the experimental storage ring (ESR), where single-ion identifications could be made. Evidence is presented for isomers in Hf-183,Hf-184,Hf-186, Ta-186,Ta-187, W-186, Re-190,Re-192,Re-194, and Os-195 with excitation energies in the range of 0.1-3.0 MeV. The lightest of these nuclides have well deformed prolate shapes, while the heaviest are transitional and susceptible to shape changes. Their properties are interpreted with the help of multi-quasiparticle and potential-energy-surface calculations.
