Abstract:The breeding suppression hypothesis predicts that females of certain small mammal species will reduce reproduction as a response to the odour of a specialised mammalian predator. This was tested in a field experiment with grey-sided voles (Clethrionomys rufocanus) during three summer seasons (1997-1999) in the subalpine tundra of northern Norway, which is a natural habitat of this species. In a first phase free-ranging voles in six unfenced 1-ha plots were monitored by live-trapping from June to August each year. In a second phase from August to September, three of the plots were sprayed with weasel (Mustela nivalis) odour to simulate increased apparent predation risk, while the remaining three plots served as untreated controls. On all plots voles were individually marked with ear tattoos and were regularly live-trapped during the whole breeding season to follow their performance. On the treatment plots the recruitment rate of juveniles did not increase in late summer as it did on the control plots. The proportion of reproductively non-active adult females was significantly higher on the treatment plots for both old and young females. Our results thus verify the breeding suppression hypothesis for the first time under natural conditions. However, the response in overwintered females is in conflict with the original hypothesis because the assumed fitness benefits from breeding delayed until the next season are inaccessible to them. As an alternative explanation we propose a short-term response of reduced activity and interrupted breeding until the predator has exploited and left the feeding patch. Such a "duck and cover" strategy would increase the fitness of females of all age classes when prey habitats are patchy.
High Frequency of Apodemus Mice Boosts Inverse Activity Pattern of Bank Voles, Clethrionomys glareolus, through Non-Aggressive Intraguild Competition

Abstract:Sympatric animals with similar requirements can separate their ecological niches along the microhabitat, food and time axes. There may be alternative reasons for an interspecific different activity pattern, such as intraspecific social constraints, predator avoidance or physical conditions such as temperature, precipitation and illumination. We investigated the importance of intraguild competition in a 2-year study in an inner-alpine mixed forest, using small forest rodents as our model species. Apodemus mice were the physically superior, and bank voles, Clethrionomys glareolus, the inferior competitor. We predicted that bank voles would exhibit increased diurnal activity when frequencies of the almost exclusively nocturnal Apodemus mice were high during a seed mast year. To investigate this, we recorded 19,138 1 min videos. Controlling for confounding variables, bank vole diurnal activity was significantly related to the frequency of Apodemus mice. We assume that at high densities of Apodemus mice, a purely nocturnal separation in the niche dimensions of time, habitat and microhabitat is no longer sufficient, and therefore an inverse activity pattern by the bank voles is reinforced. Our videos showed, however, that this does not require persistent aggressive meetings and we explain this by the long co-evolution of the taxa under study.
Direct and indirect effects of climate and seed dynamics on the breeding performance of a seed predator at the distribution edge

Abstract:The study investigates the breeding performance of edible dormouse populations (Glis glis) at the distribution edge, focusing on Montseny (MS) and Montnegre (MN). Contrasting responses were observed, with MS showing increased breeding performance linked to seed availability and higher occupancy, while MN exhibited adaptive skip breeding in response to a harsher environment. Results suggest that MN dormice can adapt to challenging conditions, emphasizing the importance of understanding population responses in marginal habitats for comprehension of adaptive mechanisms. Marginal populations usually have low densities and are considered to be particularly vulnerable to environmental stochasticity. Using data collected in nest boxes, we analyzed the breeding performance of the edible dormouse (Glis glis), an obligate hibernating rodent and a seed predator in deciduous forests, in two populations at the distribution range's edge. Despite being only 20 km apart from each other, Montseny is a large patch of mixed deciduous forests (oaks and beech), whereas Montnegre would be the harshest habitat, that is, a small, isolated patch with only oaks. First, we studied the differences in climate and tree cover change in the two populations. Second, we analyzed the direct and indirect roles of local climate conditions and seed availability on breeding performance over 10 years in each population. Finally, we explored the influence of tree cover change on the occupancy dynamics in the two populations. Our results showed contrasting responses between populations: in Montseny, asynchronous seed production between oaks and beech precluded skip breeding, and breeding performance increased with seed availability. Furthermore, dormice in Montseny may use pollen production to anticipate the amount of beech nut resources and adjust their breeding effort. Boxes showed higher occupancy and colonization and fewer extinctions in Montseny than in Montnegre, where seed availability did not drive breeding performance. Results from Montnegre suggest that skip breeding was an adaptive response to a more pulsed, harsher environment. Here, females produced a similar number of pups than at Montseny. Long‐term studies dealing with population responses in marginal habitats can lead to a deeper understanding of the capacities of organisms to adapt to harsh environments. Although local adaptation is frequently documented across various taxa, studies at the distribution edge may shed light on our still limited comprehension of the underlying mechanisms responsible for its occurrence.

Abstract:Abstract Predation risk can influence behaviour, reproductive investment and, ultimately, individuals’ fitness. In high-risk environments, females often reduce allocation to reproduction, which can affect offspring phenotype and breeding success. In cooperative breeders, helpers contribute to feed the offspring, and groups often live and forage together. Helpers can therefore improve reproductive success, but also influence breeders’ condition, stress levels and predation risk. Yet, whether helper presence can buffer the effects of predation risk on maternal reproductive allocation remains unstudied. Here, we used the cooperatively breeding sociable weaver Philetairus socius to test interactive effects of predation risk and breeding group size on maternal allocation to clutch size, egg mass, yolk mass, and yolk corticosterone. We increased perceived predation risk before egg laying using playbacks of the adults’ main predator, gabar goshawk (Micronisus gabar). We also tested interactive effects of group size and prenatal predator-playbacks on offspring hatching and fledging probability. Predator-exposed females laid eggs with 4% lighter yolks, but predator-calls’ exposure did not clearly affect clutch size, egg mass or egg corticosterone levels. Playback-treatment effects on yolk mass were independent of group size, suggesting that helpers’ presence did not mitigate predation risk effects on maternal allocation. Although predator-induced reductions in yolk mass may decrease nutrients’ availability to offspring, potentially affecting their survival, playback-treatment effects on hatching and fledging success were not evident. The interplay between helper presence and predator effects on maternal reproductive investment is still an overlooked area of life history and physiological evolutionary trade-offs that requires further studies.

Abstract:<h3 class="Heading">Background</h3><p class="Para">Selecting high-quality habitat and the optimal time to reproduce can increase individual fitness and is a strong evolutionary factor shaping animal populations. However, few studies have investigated the interplay between land cover heterogeneity, limitation in food resources, individual quality and spatial variation in fitness parameters. Here, we explore how individuals of different quality respond to possible mismatches between a cue for prey availability (land cover heterogeneity) and the actual fluctuating prey abundance.</p><h3 class="Heading">Results</h3><p class="Para">We analyse timing of breeding and reproductive success in a migratory population of Eurasian kestrels (<em class="EmphasisTypeItalic">Falco tinnunculus</em>) breeding in nest-boxes, over a full three-year abundance cycle of main prey (voles), and consider several components of individual quality, including body condition, blood parasite infection, and genetic diversity (<em class="EmphasisTypeItalic">n</em> = 448 adults) that act on different time scales. Older individuals, and kestrel parents in higher body condition started egg-laying earlier than younger birds and those in lower body condition. Additionally, egg-laying was initiated earlier during the increase and decrease phases (2011 and 2012) than during the low phase of the vole cycle (2013). Nestling survival (ratio of eggs that fledged successfully) was higher in early nests and in heterogeneous landscapes (i.e., mosaic of different habitat types), which was evident during the increase and decrease phases of the vole cycle, but not during the low vole year.</p><h3 class="Heading">Conclusions</h3><p class="Para">We found a strong positive effect of landscape heterogeneity on nestling survival, but only when voles were relatively abundant, whereas a difference in the timing of breeding related to territory landscape heterogeneity was not evident. Therefore, landscape heterogeneity appeared as the main driver of high reproductive performance under favourable food conditions. Our results show that landscape homogenization linked to agricultural intensification disrupts the expected positive effect of vole abundance on reproductive success of kestrels.</p>

Abstract:This study evaluates whether Belding's ground squirrels (Spermophilus beldingi) recognize predators under natural conditions. I observed these squirrels for 300 h during two consecutive summers, during which I described 1029 aerial and terrestrial interactions, including 299 interactions with animals known to prey on squirrels. Squirrels responded differentially to predators and non-predators, to predators that hunt differently, and to contextually different interactions with the same predator. Responses shown in encounters with predators included Trill and Chirp vocalizing, upright Posting, crouching, running to burrow entrances, entering burrows, Approaching or chasing predators, and doubling-back on pursuing predators. Ground squirrels appear to adjust their antipredator behaviour depending on the amount and kind of danger they face during an encounter.

Abstract:Agricultural intensification and climate change are serious threats toward animal populations worldwide. Agricultural intensification reduces the heterogeneity of agricultural habitats by diminishing crop variation and destroying microhabitats, such as small woody features, whereas the effects of climate change range from the growing frequency of weather extremes to disrupted prey–predator dynamics. We collected long-term ringing data from a population of Eurasian kestrels ( Falco tinnunculus ) located amidst agricultural areas in western Finland during 1985–2021, which we combined with density indices of their main prey species (voles), spatial data consisting of land cover classification of kestrel territories, and weather data, to study the effects of different environmental drivers on breeding density and success. We found that the density of inhabited nests rose with vole abundance and springtime snow depth, with the overall trend of population growth being stronger in areas with more heterogeneous landscapes. Clutch size was influenced negatively by the age of male parent and landscape heterogeneity, and positively by vole abundance, with rainfall having a negative influence conditional to other variables. Likewise, the number of produced fledglings was affected by male age, but it was additionally positively associated with landscape heterogeneity and its interaction with rainfall, with greater fledgling output in heterogeneous landscapes during high precipitation. The discrepancy between factors predicting large clutches and high numbers of fledglings suggests that while kestrels do not prefer heterogeneous landscapes when prospecting for territories, heterogeneous habitats provide better circumstances for foraging during the nestling period, which ensures nestling survival, particularly during adverse environmental conditions. Therefore, breeding in areas under intense agricultural use is more suboptimal to kestrels than their territory preferences would indicate. As changing climate may reduce prey availability and heighten the probability of weather extremities, agricultural intensification may lead to weaker reproductive success in densely populated farmland habitats.

Abstract:Animals are thought to adjust their behavior optimally to any given environment. So-called behavioral syndromes, or consistent patterns of behavior across environments, contradict this assumption of unlimited plasticity. We studied nest defense aggressiveness of female Ural owls (244 females with 482 breeding attempts) breeding in a highly variable environment created by fluctuations in the abundance of their main prey (field and bank voles) across years. Ural owls were more aggressive when voles were increasing in density as well as when the Ural owls had large brood sizes and laid early in the season. Aggressive nest defense was highly repeatable between breeding attempts (r = 0.52 ± 0.05 standard error), but individuals also differed in their plasticity (the extent to which they adjusted the level of their aggression to the varying food conditions). Fierce nest defenders produced more recruits to the local breeding population, but a female's survival was not affected by her intensity of nest defense. A path analysis revealed that nest defense aggressiveness, rather than its correlates vole abundance, brood size, or laying date, best explained offspring recruitment. Our findings provide an ultimate explanation for the Ural owl's extremely aggressive nest defense.

Abstract:Brood parasitism and nest predation are among the main causes of breeding failures in passerine birds. Brood parasites threaten to the nest, while predatory birds threaten to both the nest and the parents. The objective of this study was to experimentally evaluate whether male and female Chestnut-capped Blackbirds, Chrysomus ruficapillus , recognize and respond to different nest threats during the breeding stages. For this purpose, we presented taxidermy models of a brood parasite, Molothrus bonariensis ; a nest predator, Caracara plancus ; and a non-predator species, Colaptes campestris , on the nest of C. ruficapillus . Additionally, we filmed nests without the display models to compare them with the nests exposed to taxidermy mounts. We assessed whether parents returned to the nest for each sex based on nest attention, visit frequency, and visit duration through the filming of a total of 44 nests. The parental return to the nest in the experimental trials varied between the sexes and breeding stages. During the incubation stage, males increased their nest attention and frequency of visits in the presence of the non-predator and brood parasite models. Females also increased their frequency of visits in the presence of the non-predator model in relation to the predator and brood parasite models. During the nestling stage, males extended the duration of their visits in the presence of the predator model compared to nests without the display model. Meanwhile, females showed no differences in their behavior during this stage. Overall, the Chestnut-capped Blackbirds parents demonstrated the ability to recognize the presented models and responded differently to different threats at different stages of the breeding cycle. The flexible responses they exhibited may be consistent with the `threat-sensitive predator avoidance ́ hypothesis.

Abstract:Predation risk can inflict profound effects on prey by influencing prey behavior and other traits. Prey are often subjected to a diversity of predators, which can exert differential predation pressures on prey life-history strategies. In birds, breeding adults and offspring (as eggs, nestlings, and fledglings) are susceptible to different types of predators, and life-history theory predicts that breeding birds can adjust to adult versus offspring predation risk differentially via allocation of breeding investment. Here, we experimentally tested for the effects of perceived adult versus offspring predation risk on breeding birds’ reproductive strategy and performance. On study plots with nest boxes used by the cavity-nesting Eastern bluebird Sialia sialis, we manipulated vocal cues of 3 avian predators that preferentially prey on either bluebird adults, or offspring, or both. We found that 1) increased perception of predation risk by all predator treatments reduced bluebird parental investment in egg production and/or post-egg nesting performance, and 2) increased perception of adult and offspring predation risks affected bluebirds differentially, with bluebirds exhibiting shorter nestling rearing periods under offspring, but not adult, predation risk. Our results provide experimental evidence for the nonconsumptive effects of predation risk on avian breeding behavior that can influence demographic vital rates and highlight the mechanisms by which breeding birds can adjust reproductive strategies under different predation risk situations.

Abstract:Predation risk is a key driver of natural selection, influencing various aspects of prey behavior. While many studies focus on how predation risk affects average behavior at population level, less attention has been given to its potential impact on behavioral variation within prey populations. Here, we investigate the effect of perceived predation risk on among-individual behavioral variation in naturally clonal Amazon mollies. Juveniles were raised in two groups: one exposed to a predator during feeding (visual cues only) and the other one serving as a control group. We observed activity and feeding behavior (time spent feeding, visits to feeding spot) over a four-week period. (I) Individuals in the predator-exposed group were on average less active but there was no difference in average feeding behavior between the two groups, suggesting individuals strategically respond to threats based on behavior-specific cost-benefit trade-offs. (II) Among-individual behavioral variation was affected by perceived predation risk: in the absence of the predator, individuals developed pronounced differences in the time spent feeding while no such development was observed in the predator-exposed group. This result has the potential of affecting a wide range of fitness-relevant intraspecific interactions if lower among-individual feeding variation translate into reduced sizes differences. The presence of the predator initially reduced among-individual variation in activity and visits to the feeding spot, but these differences did not persist over time. Our findings highlight the importance of considering both population-level and individual-level responses to predation risk for a more comprehensive understanding of its ecological and evolutionary consequences.

Age-dependent effects of predation risk on reproductive success in a freshwater snail

Abstract:Reproductive performance is often age-dependent, showing patterns of improvement and/or senescence as well as trade-offs with other traits throughout the lifespan. High levels of extrinsic mortality (e.g., from predators) have been shown to sometimes, but not always, select for accelerated actuarial senescence in nature and in the lab. Here, we explore the inductive (i.e., plastic) effects of predation risk (i.e., nonlethal exposure to chemical cues from predators) on the reproductive success of freshwater snails (Physa acuta). Snails were reared either in the presence or absence of chemical cues from predatory crayfish and mated early in life or late in life (a 2 × 2 factorial design); we measured egg hatching and early post-hatching survival of their offspring. Both age and predation risk reduced reproductive success, illustrating that predation risk can have a cross-generational effect on the early survival of juveniles. Further, the decline in reproductive success was over three times faster under predation risk compared to the no-predator treatment, an effect that stemmed from a disproportionate, negative effect of predation risk on the post-hatching survival instead of hatching rate. We discuss our results in terms of a hypothesized consequence of elevated stress hormone levels.

Abstract:Animals that do not provide parental care have to secure the survival of their offspring by ensuring a safe reproductive environment or smart timing tactics. Nocturnal spawning behaviour of many fish species is an example of the latter behaviour in the animal kingdom and is hypothesized to provide a survival advantage to the eggs spawned during the night. In order to test the efficiency of the smart timing tactics in a freshwater fish, a study was carried out of the interaction of the rheophilic spawner (asp Leuciscus aspius) and the predator of its drifting eggs (bleak Alburnus alburnus) using passive telemetry. According to a model based on acquired data, asp laid 63% of its eggs at night, while vision-oriented bleak was present in 92% of the time during the day. This study gives support to the predator avoidance hypothesis, which expects animals to reproduce in a period when the probability of offspring predation is at its lowest.
Conspecific density drives sex-specific spatial wintertime distribution and hoarding behaviour of an avian predator

Abstract:Most studies on intraspecific competition, i.e., competition among individuals of the same species, have been conducted during the breeding season. Yet, at northern latitudes, intraspecific competition is expected to be particularly strong under the harsh weather conditions of the non-breeding season with limited number of resources available per individual. We studied the food-hoarding behaviour of wintering Eurasian Pygmy Owls (Glaucidium passerinum) along with sex- and age-specific spatial distribution in relation to fluctuating main prey abundance (voles) and conspecific density using a 15-year dataset. In low vole abundance years, increasing conspecific density reduced the total prey number stored by an owl, suggesting high costs of exploitative competition. The distance between the stores of nearest neighbours was greater when both were females, suggesting that the spatial avoidance is driven by sex-specific competition. However, food stores of females had a larger amount of prey items, especially when the nearest neighbour was of the same sex. The number of stores hoarded by an owl increased with increasing conspecific densities. Distributing the prey items to multiple store-sites instead of one (shifting from larder-hoarding towards scatter-hoarding) can help to reduce the overall loss to potential pilfering when conspecific density is high. These results combined suggest that high conspecific density inflames sex-specific interference competition, rather than solely exploitative competition, and in turn drives the observed sex-specific spatial distribution. Adopting a sex-specific spatial distribution according to hoarding and aggressive behaviour can be a way to reduce the severity of intraspecific competition locally and could have cascading effects on the prey community.

Predation‐risk effects are known to be context dependent, with impacts of perceived predation threat on individual antipredator responses, prey population demography, species interactions and community organization hinging on traits of the prey, the predator(s) and setting of the interaction. Yet, few empirical studies to date have simultaneously explored how these three drivers shape contingency in antipredator behaviour, the key first step in the process by which predation‐risk effects play out, especially in free‐living vertebrates. In a new study, Shiratsuru & Pauli (2024) address this knowledge deficit by showing that snowshoe hares (Lepus americanus) trade foraging for anti‐predator vigilance dynamically as a function of winter food availability (a proxy for individual energetic state), the timing and intensity of predator activity, and environmental properties associated with elevated vulnerability to predator‐induced mortality, notably including coat colour mismatch caused by variation in snow cover. These results offer new insight into the complexity of predation‐risk effects and should serve as a guide for research aiming to better understand the expression of these effects under varying circumstances.

We introduced adult males and females of the laboratory mouse strain C57BL/6J into a large, outdoor field enclosure containing defendable resource zones under one of two social conditions. We first created a low-density social environment, such that the number of available territories exceeded the number of males. After males established stable territories, we introduced a pulse of intruder males and observed the resulting defensive and invasive tactics employed. In response to this change in social environment, males with large territories invested more in patrolling but were less effective at excluding intruder males as compared with males with small territories. Intruding males failed to establish territories and displayed an alternative tactic featuring greater exploration as compared with genetically identical territorial males. Alternative tactics did not lead to equal reproductive success—males that acquired territories experienced greater survival and had greater access to females.

Abstract:Recent evidence indicates that predation risk plays a special role in the rodent behavior of dams and offspring, but little is known about the effect of maternal exposure to the predator cues in the absence of pups. Here, we assessed the effects of repeated predator odor exposure on various maternal responses in postpartum Brandt's voles (Lasiopodomys brandtii). We also examined offspring's behavioral response to a novel environment. Only mother voles were exposed to distilled water, rabbit urine and cat urine for 60 min daily from postpartum day (PP) 1-18. Maternal behavior was immediately tested after these exposures on PP1, 3, 6, 9 and 18. Repeated cat odor (CO) and rabbit odor (RO) exposure disrupted hovering over pups in a time-dependent fashion. Repeated CO exposure also time-dependently disrupted pup retrieval, whereas RO exposure induced long-term reduction in pup licking. Juvenile offspring of CO-exposed mothers showed increased locomotor activity and decreased rearing in the open field at postnatal day 30. These findings demonstrated that maternal exposure to predator or non-predator odors had a disruptive effect on the maternal behavior of Brandt's voles when only the mother was exposed to these odors, and that the adversity experience with predation risk significantly impacted the behavioral development of offspring. Future work should explore possible behavioral mechanisms, such as the effect of predation risk, on the dams' emotional processing or pup preference.
Early life-history predator-prey reversal in two cyprinid fishes

Abstract:Predator-prey relationships are often perceived simply as a situation in which a predator enhances its own fitness while reducing the fitness of its prey. However, this relationship may become reversed when the prey feeds on the juvenile predator stages. We investigated this phenomenon in a model asp (Leuciscus aspius; predator)-bleak (Alburnus alburnus; prey) relationship. The adhesive asp eggs are available for bleak predation after a spawning event for only tens of seconds before they adhere to the stones, where bleak do not forage. Gut content analysis demonstrated that eggs were utilized in high quantities, especially in the spawning peak of the asp reproductive season. Furthermore, using underwater video, we recorded the bleak feeding efficiency on naturally drifting asp eggs as the percentage of eggs eaten. Within the 40 cm egg trajectory captured by our cameras, total egg mortality was 21.2 ± 2.2% on average. The highest survival chances occurred among eggs drifting in aggregations, since the short drifting distance together with their aggregated distribution satiated bleak and part of the egg aggregation could attach to the spawning ground. This study emphasizes the potential efficiency of predator egg utilization by prey, which may have further consequences in predator-prey dynamics.
Adaptive anti-predatory responses of European rabbits exposed to different predation pressure

Abstract:Prey species develop anti-predatory strategies as a response to minimising the risk of being predated. However, how the European rabbit ( Oryctolagus cuniculus ) adapts to different predator pressure is not fully known. Here, we studied the adaptive anti-predatory responses of European rabbits exposed to different terrestrial predation pressure. To do this, we took advantage of a rabbit translocation programme in the Sierra Norte Natural Park of Sevilla (SW Spain), where rabbits from the same donor population were translocated in plots with and without terrestrial predator exclusion fences (aerial predation was not excluded in any of the plots). This presented an ideal opportunity to observe whether the behaviour of individuals from the same population adapts to situations with different predator pressure; thus, their behaviour was evaluated through direct observations. Although most rabbits were observed close to cover, differences in distance to cover, group size and behaviour were observed between fenced and unfenced plots. Overall, both adult and juvenile rabbits moved further from cover in the unfenced plot than in the fenced plot. Most of the observations in the unfenced plot corresponded to rabbits in pairs or alone; whereas in the fenced plot, rabbits were primarily in pairs or in larger groups. Our findings suggest that in the unfenced plot, rabbits that moved further from cover were often part of larger groups (≥ 4 rabbits); whereas in the fenced plot, it was rabbits in smaller groups (< 4 rabbits). Rabbits in the unfenced plot were alert and running more frequently than rabbits in the fenced one; in the latter, these rabbits were mostly feeding. Other relaxed behaviours such us grooming or resting were more frequent close to cover. In summary, our results highlight rabbits' capacity to promptly adjust behaviour in response to predation risk, exhibiting adaptive anti-predatory responses tailored to different predation pressures. These insights contribute to understanding the nuanced dynamics of prey species' responses to diverse predation scenarios.
